Another week, another mash-up and I think I got a real solid one for ya this week.  A full mash-up album (well, 31 mins worth) comes out from a new DJ called Weekend Of Hedonism.  The album, ‘The Adventures Of…’ is a very good album using such unique sample as The Beach Boys, Backstreet Boys, Du Hast, Jessies Mom and Mighty Mighty Bosstones and there is never a time that it sounds forced or awkward.  Granted there are some times where it resembles Super Mash Bros. or Girl Talk, but whatever.. in the long run they all sound the same, which is my mind is real good.

NTKOG #68: The kind of girl who goes out on a Friday night and — god, it makes me cringe even to type this — attempts to dance.

I am: like the perfect storm of non-dance: I have no rhythm, am a total spaz, hate touching people, don’t really like music, and am usually too embarrassed from your attempts to dance to focus on anything else.

I am not: sure why we as a species dance anyway. Is it one of those things that’s supposed to emulate sex so potential mates can assess you? If so, why do so many girls wave one arm above their head and shout “WOO!” while doing it? Is that — is that something I should be doing in bed?

The Scene: Great Scott, in Allston. A corner bar (home of the burlesque drawing sessions I sketched on a while ago) that I had mistaken for some sort of heavy metal situation. When I went there one Friday night with Sister and two of her friends, though, I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was nothing more than a PBR-scented hipster haven. Stupid-awesome hats of every description abounded! Skinny jeans and muttonchops for miles!

The live band for the night played mellow indie rock; afterwards, a DJ cranked out dance-your-face-off ’80s hits and fun mash-ups. The Adrien Brody lookalike who encouraged us to come said he and his friend came to dance their hearts out every week, and my sister needed no encouragement. So I navigated through the crowd with my fedora and overly heavy computer bag (bad planning, dude) and steeled myself up to dance. To really dance.

True, I have on occasion — in the right company, and when I’ve been mixing my clears and fermenteds — occasionally been goaded to give the natives a treat and dance for one or two songs out in a club. But actual instances of TKOG danceage are rare enough that I remember literally every one. And not fondly. Should give you an idea of my relationship with dancing.

The four of us pushed our way on the stage, and immediately I was caught in a thronging wave of communal gyration. Other people were not only touching me, but sweating on me. Fortunately, they were sweating straight vodka, for the most part. The contact buzz could only help.

We danced quite literally for hours. After a few minutes of looking around, it occurred to me: nobody can dance. Everybody looks friggin’ stupid. It’s sort of heartening, really, how we have this social covenant that allows us to FLAIL LIKE IDIOTS  while riding the crest of a shared beat. Mass transcendence, almost.

Of course, those were just the good moments. The majority of the time, I was alternately wishing for another drink, or out-of-body teleporting in order to stare with scorn and dismay at my totally spastic limbs and chide myself.

The Verdict: I had hoped — I had really hoped — that this would be an NTKOG that I would dread, but would ultimately end up loving. Like hockey or beer-drinking. But alas, kittens, I am most eminently not the kind of girl who dances.

Even now, weeks after the alleged dancing incident, every time I go out to a bar and see people dancing, or watch a club scene in a movie or TV show and watch the writhing masses have the time of their lives, I flash back to my attempt at dancing and literally burn with shame. Oh god. Oh god. Never again. That’s all there is to it.

Just over a week ago, Rhainnon Frater interviewed me for her blog, wanting to get a glimpse into not just Coscom Entertainment as a publisher, but also me as a writer.

Among the things talked about was the company, monsters, classic book mash-ups, Christianity and more.

I wanted to let the interview get the spotlight on her blog first before linking to it here.

That said, here’s what went down between the two of us not long ago.

Yesterday I attended a guest lecture at the University of Salford delivered by Dr Greg Elmer. Greg is Bell Globemedia Research Chair and Director of the Infoscape Research Lab at Ryerson University in Toronto. The thought provoking lecture was entitled “Open Source Video: Testing The Limits of Participatory Media Making”.

Greg talked about a project he is currently working on with colleagues to investigate the use of emerging collaborative video production tools (in this case Open Source Cinema – which also brought us the award winning RIP! A Remix Manifesto) and the potential to use these to produce a ‘crowd sourced’, organic documentary.

The subject matter for the documentary has been inspired by a recent book written by Greg and Professor Andy Opel ‘Preempting Dissent – The Politics of An Inevitable Future‘ which looks at the nature of surveillance and governance in the wake of the ‘War on Terror.’

The project asks people to contribute to a documentary*, ‘Preempting Dissent – Open Sourcing Secrecy’, by uploading content, remixing it, mashing it up as well as help shape the nature of the ’story’ arc. Although Greg and co. plan to provide the names of six chapters for the film this will also evolve as the project continues.

The outcome of the project will be a feature length documentary and an archive of content that can be utilised/remixed by others to produce new work.

I will be interested to see the final film although I think it is the process of production that is most interesting here. How elements of social media are being used for the construction of art (this more traditional media form in the nature of a documentary), for looking at questions of who participates or the type of content people are prepared to supply, as well as the implications for the future of documentary film making.

Everyone’s heard of mash-ups now, thanks in part to Glee (BIG UP GLEEKS!!!)  Anyway,  if all of those performances brought you a certain musical euphoria, well I have got some musical gold for you!  Mix a little Gaga Poker Face with a dash of South Park’s Cartman and just a pinch of Christopher Walken from his BBC One appearance… and you’ve got a chart topping hit!  Well maybe more like a YouTube topping hit!  Either way it’s FANTASTICAL!

So. It’s probably obvious to you that I am obsessed with a few aspects of popular culture. I try to justify these obsessions by researching the origin of the obsession, its place in society, the amount of power that symbol carries…the list for scientific sociological guilt-trip eradication goes on. Lady Gaga falls into this category. She’s a train wreck of colors, sounds, images, bravado, stereotypes, and trends in the mass market music industry, and she’s a train wreck of a classically trained musician. Once she exploded onto the scene over a year ago, I couldn’t get away from her, nor did I want to. She was mentioned in an article that claimed her as a gay icon…even though she hadn’t really done anything yet, but they called it way before anyone else did. (I’ll post a link to the original article if I can find it.) Following a link train I stumbled across an article where Gaga called herself the Andy Warhol of pop. HER ALBUM HADN’T EVEN BEEN RELEASED YET. SHE HAD ONE SINGLE OUT. (Don’t quote me on that…I’m being lazy and going by memory until I can find that Article Of Temporal And Thematic Reference. Until then, enjoy this, it’s bordering on epic.) I remember talking about her audacity for weeks. “Who the hell does she think she is?!” and no one knew who I was talking about because she wasn’t Gaga yet. Now she’s famous for that very awesome audio-dacity (harhar) that incensed me enough to listen to her album on repeat, dancing around my room in a towel…or a translucent-metallic-bubble-suit-with-LED-display…whichever.

I’m not the only one who’s obsessed with her. It’s beyond the office at Interscope handling new signers, who saw fit to produce a gagaillion music videos before her songs were released as singles, and a few simply promotional videos as well. They were pushing her visual appeal and her role as a Performance Artist months before anyone heard her as simply a catchy tune on the radio. Her videos still contain intense imagery, vivid colors, elements of gritty hip hop as well as glamour, and the kind of wardrobes to make grandma reach for the oxygen. She’s a drag queen. (Everyone notices; no one cares.) She was established before you even heard about her. She sat down with those dudes in suits and said something along the lines of: Hi. Call me Lady Gaga. Yes, this is a crown. I’ve earned it in the future, a time you mere mortals have not experienced yet, but I have returned to your present to prove to you that I’m the best investment you’ll ever make. Eventually I’ll own you and I’ll force the world to call me Lady Google, but you needn’t worry about such things yet, (cough)minions(cough).

This is when those suited gurus bowed, penitent on one knee, and a glittering extravagance of pyrotechnics aimed at your groin and hormones was born unto the world called, “Top 40.”

It’s not just those suited gurus, mind you. The obsession is gripping the entire nation. Indie kids in their parents’ basements, their parents, substitute librarians, hipster @$$holes, ravers, your sister’s kids, and the elite of parody creators and those people who get off making spoof videos of any phenomenon.

This brings me to the core of this post. A brilliantly choreographed maelstrom of video data. This video is aiming at your loins, heartstrings, and wrinkled cranial cortex all at once. Behold the editing genius.

I came across the DiRT page this morning, run by Lisa Spiro. What an awesome resource! If you know of tools that are useful in your own research, suggest them to Lisa and get them listed on this page. From the front:

I love how it is organized by asking what it is you want to do.  While focussed on the humanities and social sciences, there is a distinct lack of Agent Modeling or other simulation tools, which I suppose indicates that simulation hasn’t made great inroads amongst the digital humanities set yet.

I remember getting my TRS-80 when I was about 10.  I flipped through the manual that came with it and was entranced at the kaleidoscope program at the end of the book.  I was amazed to see that a computer could reproduce these patterns and colors in beautiful synchronization.  This is my first real memory of programing and computer generated art.

I decided to revisit that memory and create my own kaleidoscope. It allows you to search Flickr titles and tags to return a set of images. You can then flip through the images and adjust the number of mirrored slices.  If you are interested in how I built it please read on.

I have been developing with Processing for a couple of years and wanted to see what could be done to make a Kaleidoscope. The technology stack that I came up with was to using Processing to access a dynamic php page that looked up images on Flickr via a REST call to YQL. So let me explain what that looks like…

Let’s start with the PHP:

As you can see it is pretty straight forward.  I use YQL (there may be a # of call per day limit on this) to conduct a search based on a term passed to the php page.  I then parse the results into variable that are then used to build urls.  The generated urls are then output as text.

While the program is running I call this page from processing by:

And that is pretty much it.  Sounds easy, but it did take some time to get it to work right.  I want to work to add some features around saving images and possibly a gallery, but since I have a working v1 I had better get it out (perfection is the enemy of good enough).
