If you want to have an idea what Semantic Web can mean for you and your business, have a look

If you want to have an idea what Semantic Web can mean for you and your business, have a look at www.zemanta.com.

It comes as a Google Chrome Extension, or a Firefox extension, or a IE Plug-in or Safari Bookmarklet.

I tested the Google Chrome extension on my PC. In this case a Mini-HP with Windows 7 installed. I also use Windows Live Writer to do my blogs. Zemanta also has a Live Writer Plug-in that i also installed.

This looks quite similar to the viewer of Open Calais that i commented on already way back in April 2009. But is is way more user-friendly, and so well integrated with Live Writer. Anybody writing blogs should install this.

To get you an idea of the powerful stuff under the hood of this semantic engine, go to the home page and click on the try demo button.

You then get presented with an free-text box that you can fill with any text you want. In my case, i just cut and pasted the intro-section of our Think Tank document.

You just hit “Run Demo”, and what you get then is really unbelievable !

Your content gets enhanced with images. See example below.

Or you get links to related articles:

The beauty really comes and the end of the page of the demo:

Yep, you got it. It shows all in-text links, and all words that have automatically semantically tagged, based on the sources you have given during set-up (or later when logging into your personal account). And yes, it also looks into Twitter and Facebook.

When you install Zemanta for Live Writer, you are presented with a list of recommended articles while you are blogging. You can then select interesting and related articles to reference in your blogs posts with just a click of the mouse. The benefits of being included within our recommended content pool are: trackback links to your blog, discovery of your blog by new readers, and connecting topical blogs together.

Zemanta expands the author’s regular blogging dashboard, populating it on the fly with content suggestions relevant to the current text. It presents images, links, articles, tags in a simple interface. It encourages re-use and linking to other content with as little effort as possible – a single click.

Zemanta supports Blogger, WordPress, TypePad, Movable Type, Ning, Drupal, LiveJournal, Tumblr and email platforms Google Mail and Yahoo!Mail.

Here is a screenshot of my screen as i was making this blog, and how it automatically added in-text links to the word “Blogger” etc above…

Main features of Zemanta are:
● on the fly contextual suggestions of related articles, images, links and tags;
● affiliate linking support;
● re-blogging – cross-platform quoting for blogs;
● spam-free database of 10000 news sources and blogs;
● copyright filtering of suggested images.

Use cases for email include:
● Individualized personal “postcards” as you can easily add images from your Flickr collection or from others.
● Persuasive professional introductions with easy addition of personal images and links to social networks.
● Informative report-style mails with links to other points on Internet for further reading.

These are the use cases suggested on the Zemanta site and during the install procedure.

However, i strongly believe that these sort of technologies will change in a very disruptive way how we think about standards. In the context of my employer SWIFT, standards are one of the pillars of our value proposition. So far, we “only” looked at standards for message formats, but we could/should apply our 30+ years experience in semantics and ontologies for financial services into this new domain of semantics of … well, anything.

XBRL and CLOUD are already moving big way into this space.

BTW: the “REBLOG” button at the end of this posting was also added automatically by Zemanta.

I’ve been struck down with illness – again! So, no video blog from me today, as I’m all snotty and icky, and I know most of you don’t like looking at me on my good days, so God knows what you’d make of me if I appeared on camera, today. However, in keeping with this Hundred Days pledge, I have a video to post that I spent all night working on, probably for twelve hours straight!

“Waste Management” is the English version of t.A.T.u.’s 3rd Russian language album “Vesyolye Ulybki”. However, the presentation is completely brand new, and has been described by the band as “pinkfloydish”.

“You should listen to this version of our LP non-stop at least once to feel what we tried to create.” Explains Lena Katina. “Pink Floyd was not the only band who did it this way, but we can say it was them who inspired us. Waste Management has got all songs bound together by short instrumental interludes composed by our author Evgeniy Matveitsev. This version of the LP is one continuous music trip”.

Taking this concept of continuity, dubbed “Waste Management Transcendent Version”, I composed a short megamix of all three singles from the album. In actual fact, the music was composed over a year ago, albeit in Russian. Using the 30-second previews made available online, I transposed the mix into Russian, and edited together a unique presentational video, intended to virally promote the album. The album’s history is very colourful, if you’re interested in reading. Originally planned for release in 2008, the album would serve as accompaniment for the movie “You and I”, which is based on the novel “Finding t.A.T.u.”, and stars Mischa Barton and Anton Yelchin. However, post-production of the movie delayed the release, and as such, the album was postponed for a time when there could be a full promotional drive… which apparently, is now! The album secured distribution rights in Latin America, as well as t.A.T.u.’s home country of Russia; and is available Worldwide online at iTunes store and AmazonMP3. If you like the sound of all this, then please find your relevant place of purchase from the links below.

I really like the 2 Many DJs mixes, but I saw them at Benicassim a few years ago and couldn’t quite connect with the set. Still, it was late and I’ve consumed a lot more of their stuff now (including the excellent album ‘Nite Versions’) and managed to get a couple of tickets for the C2 gig last night.

For those who don’t know them, David and Stephen Dewaele were part of an alternative rock band called Soulwax from Ghent in Belgium but became famous under their 2 Many DJs moniker for playing bastard pop, techno and mash-ups. The boundary between Soulwax and 2 Many DJs is a blurry one, the album ‘Nite Versions’ for example being effectively a 2 Many DJs remix of a previous Soulwax album (‘Any Minute Now’).

Anyway, so we arrive at their C2 gig last night and unfortunately I again found it hard to connect. The place was definitely packed out and atmospheric, but whether they were holding out their good stuff until the very end or whether it’s just me I don’t know. They seem different live to me than they are on record – much more standard and formulaic without any of the 7 minute building tunes I love. Their remix of Kids by MGMT, for example, on record builds up and the last minute or so ends with a twisted siren sound emulating the main melody, but when they played it live they missed half the song off. So you’re then left with just Kids by MGMT with a techno beat underneath, none of the character of their actual remix.

They did, however, play ‘Raspberry Beret’ by Prince which went down a storm!

2 on 5

Here’s your 5-minute recap of GLEE.

Rachel suspects there is a baby daddy scandal afoot and discusses revealing her suspicions to Finn with fellow Gleeks. They all tell her she’s crazy and then have a call-a-thon on how to keep her from spilling the beans. They can’t let the truth affect their chances at sectionals.

But Rachel won’t be dissuaded and she tells Finn her suspicions. Finn commences in beating the mohawk out of Puck while telling a teary eyed Quinn that she means nothing to him and never will again. And also, he quits Glee.

Now with Mr. Schue banned from glee club and minus a male lead, New Directions are at a major disadvantage. Emma agrees to chaperone the trip, which causes the break-up of her engagement to Coach Tanaka.

Also, Mr. Schue leaves his psycho wife, Terry.

But when the Gleeks arrive at sectionals, they realize that their competition has stolen their songs. They suspect Santana of being a spy and the truth comes out that all the Cheerios have been moles for Sue Sylvester, but they’ve since quit their deception and that glee club is, amazingly, the best part of their day.

Mr. Schue begs Finn to be a leader and after some grumbling he does. Rachel opens the show with some Lawrence Welk number, then they go on to Finn’s rendition of the Rolling Stones CAN’T ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU WANT. Emma chastizes the other directors for cheating and New Directions win sectionals.

And Mr. Schue and Emma finally kiss!

And that’s what you missed last time on GLEE!

Heyy!!

It’s December! Wow has time passed quickly! Haven’t blogged for sooooo long and I feel soooo deprived, and there’s still a week of busy school left. But…don’t worry, I’m not completely dead, I’ll be catching up on those drama’s and hopefully some new reviews will be up soon (and maybe some more mash-ups and stories as well ).

So…title, maybe some of you have heard it before whilst surfing youtube. Indeed, I was on youtube (as usual) and I was searching for a new mash-up to do (this was after Chinese school where I totally died and wasn’t prepared to use my brain any more than needed). F(x) seems to be a fave of mine and after searching some f(x) mash-ups I came across…a mash up of Rachel Steven’s Sweet Dream My LA Ex and SNSD’s Chocolate Love. Hmm…then I thought of my joint party with a few of my bday buddies…now wouldn’t it be fun to play one of my mash-ups…at my party…!!! Hehe, so I got to work, using F(x)’s version of chocolate love instead (as it had more of a dance kinda feel)…and here’s the finished product:

Hope you like! Please rate/comment…something An english version of CL and Minzy’s Please Don’t Go may be coming soon, so stay tuned

Inspired by Lauren Laverne’s new show on BBC 6 Music in which she gave her listeners a link to a free download everyday I thought I would make it more simple (for me as much as you) to point you in the right direction.

Despite being given away for free (some for a limited time only) all these tracks are really good, especially the Steve Mason (fomally of the excellent Beta Band) song. If he’s giving that away for free the rest of the album must be amazing!

Enjoy!

There’s also loads of ace remixes & mash ups here. I personally can’t get enough of the Be My Baby intro remix, it’s titled Pre-Show Music April 209 – Master on the following link:

What could a Library do with freely available government data as supplied via http://data.australia.

What could a Library do with freely available government data as supplied via http://data.australia.gov.au/ not much so far it seems. There was a competition at this website Mashupaustralia, that closed last month in which people/organisations were asked to find ways to use/reuse data in useful apps. No Library seem to have come to this party, which is a shame. There was however one app created by someone working at the CSIRO that sought to provide location finders for access to the Internet in public libraries, it can be found here http://mashupaustralia.org/mashups/public-web-locator/ Unfortunately it only seems to cover Victoria.

It made me think that an Australian Library map using maybe Google maps and the Australian Libraries Gateway data as can be seen here http://www.nla.gov.au/apps/libraries would be awesome.

Although libraries have not entered the competition there are still a whole range of apps created that help bring together information, which I am sure will be of great use for any reference Librarian.

A bit unrelated but something librarians should know about is Emergency 2.0 http://gov2em.net.au/ , no not kidding this is the site for when web 2.0 just wont do.

NASA recently announced the discovery of water on the moon. The moon appears in dozens of Bruce’s poems and, coincidentally, I recently rediscovered a cache of paintings that he had done featuring space travel.

It is an unusual group. Ordinarily, Bruce draws or paints whatever comes to mind at the time he picks up a pen or brush. Although his subject matter recurs over the course of many years (still lifes, figures, etc.), very rarely has he rendered a single motif in a single style in consecutive works. In the 1980s, he did a series of highly varnished, candy-colored paintings of astronauts and rocketships likely inspired by the space shuttle missions that were so active during that decade, including Columbia, Challenger, Discovery and Atlantis. These paintings are sheer fun. At the same time, if you look at them long enough, you might detect enough pathos to make you wonder, what is really happening there? What is s/he thinking? If they were comics, they would have thought bubbles that would reveal their mysteries.

These space travel paintings will be photographed professionally later this month. They’re so glossy (as you can see below) that it’s hard for me to get good pictures of them myself. Also below is Bruce’s poem “SPACE,” describing, as his poems about the moon often do, our intimate connection to it, rather than distance from it.

Last week I blogged about my progress in ECI 831 and how I thought I was slowly getting a handle on

Last week I blogged about my progress in ECI 831 and how I thought I was slowly getting a handle on some of the things that we were trying to do. That was last week… before I sat in on a class with Scott Leslie and Brian Lamb and their discussion on remixing education. I had to re-listen to the class recording yesterday, because for part of the time, I was not even sure what they were talking about. It isn’t that I did not realize that such things existed and, of course, I had seen countless examples of mash-ups in various places. I just didn’t make the connection.

According to Scott Leslie, a mash-up is “taking 2 or more different things (be they content or services) and turning them into something else. I started doing some searches around the web for some ideas about mash-ups, so that I could get a better understanding. Most of my search time was spent at the web site, Rip! A Remix Manifesto. I watched 8 chapters of a documentary film about copyright and remix culture made by Brett Gaylor. The film is done in chapters, each dealing with different aspects of copyright vs. remix. Gregg Gillis, better known as Girl Talk, an artist that specializes in remix music, is the main focus of the documentary. At the end of each chapter is a invitation to add to the film at Open Source Cinema and create your own version of remix, so to speak.

Now, no wonder people like me feel a bit overwhelmed trying to keep up. I don’t know whether to give my brain a rest or keep hanging on in case I lose whatever progress I have made so far. I am not sure how I feel about remix… Is it breaking copyright law? Or is it necessary, so that we can be creative? As the film points out, copyright law was originally created to promote creativity and now it seems to be trying to control it. Is that true or does it depend on your perspective? Should I be in favor of copyright or copyleft?

It is funny how I immediately made a connection in my own world to this whole discussion. The best part about the job that I have right now, as learning support teacher and vice-principal, is that I have the opportunity to be in a lot of different classrooms all the time, and observing kids doing some very cool stuff. On Friday, I wandered in to the grade 7 classroom, mainly because I had not been able to get in there for a long time, and got to be involved in a very interesting discussion on art and how the “idea” of art is changing. At one point, the teacher asked the students whether they thought that the changes in technology influence art and culture. Inside my head I was screaming “Yes! Yes!”. The students did think that technology does influence art, but seemed unsure as to exactly how that might happen.

Wow, is this a good time to introduce the whole remix and mash-up idea? I will forward some the the information that was discussed in our last class to the grade 7 teacher and she can do with it as she wishes. There is a study guide available on the Rip! A Remix Manifesto site that was put together by Adam Hodgins, a music and technology teacher at Selwyn House School in Montreal. It looked like it had some very interesting discussion questions.

I remember some aspects of this topic coming up once before earlier in the course when Jon Mott introduced the idea of creative commons and how that related to copyright.

In my search today I also came across a very interesting little mash-up video that was used as part of the last election campaign in the United States. One of the familiar political figures was mashed into scenes from the movie, “1984″ based on a novel by George Orwell written in 1949.

So, at this point I think that I will have to continue to do a “mash-up” in my own brain and hang on for all that I am worth. It will only benefit me and my students. Catch you on the back channel.

Web 2.0 vs. Web 1.0 The tale of these two Webs is best told once we understand the meaning, importan

Web 2.0 vs. Web 1.0 The tale of these two Webs is best told once we understand the meaning, importance and the differences between the following key words for each of the two versions of the web:

* Communities * Content * Communication *Conversations

Communities: Humans are social creature and associating with a ‘tribe’ is a very basic instinct for most of us. We identify ourselves by the places where we were born or live, schools we attended, religious beliefs we practice, professions organization we belong to, companies we work for and a whole slew of such groupings. The groups can be professional or personal and everything in between. Web 1.0 was very informational centric and did not include the community aspect. It did not foster any sense of community, the sense of belonging. So in a sense Web 1.0 did very little to address one of the very basic human nature

Content: Content is king. However not all kings are created equals, there are emperors, kings and chiefs. Similarly all content is not created equal. In content world, one of the biggest differentiator is content creator. In the world of Web 1.0, because of the inherent cost related to content publishing and distribution, content was locked-up to the few. For example corporate marketing defined all out bound messaging. However, within any industry, groups or company there are leaders and experts, example company CTO or somebody who is an influencer in your group. Their voice and opinions are important to a more targeted group. The third type of content is the idle chat between friends, or a water cooler talk between co-workers, think Facebook. People have various personas, and there is place for all these types of conversation in each person’s life.

Whereas Web 1.0 was mostly for the first persona of content creators, Web 2.0 covers all types of content. In the Web 2.0 world, Wikipedia replaced Encyclopedias, Corporate Wiki replaced the intranet and your LinkedIn post of “Tell your network what you are doing” and IM status replaced the Post-it notes of “Do not disturb” sign outside the cubicle.

Communication: Communication is a two way dialog. In the real world it happens top down, bottom up, and sideways. The first version of the web was top down, talk only as it had no listen capability. In a sense it allowed for a very uninteresting monolog. Web 2.0 is about two way communication, it is about a dialog.

It put people and their communities in the center of all the dialogs. In the first incarnation of the web, this interaction was left to the physical world. Communication is about collaboration and conversations. It is about linking, sharing and interacting. Web 2.0 provided a platform to do all of this.

With so much content and so many conversations and no moderator, the problem of information overload became even more acute. Web 2.0 addressed this problem with a unique ‘wisdom of the crowds’ who provide the moderation by ‘following on twitter’, rating and ranking associated with both the content providers and their content. Comments, bookmarks, ‘..also bought’ (at Amazon), thumbs-up/ down, defined the features that link between relevant content to their communities and allowed them to have a meaningful conversation.

What role has Web 2.0 played in giving rise to the era of blogging and to social networking?

Some of the key Web 2.0 technologies include

*Social Networking site

*Wikis, Blogs & Micro blog

*Mash-ups, Video and Podcast

There are five specific business objectives of most communication — to listen, to talk, to energize, to support, and to embrace. Individuals and companies are using Web 2.0 technologies to communicate with their customers, business partners, employees and their industry groups. Blogging and Social networking are two of the more widely adopted Web 2.0 technologies.

Often time, the users for these tools are viewed as outside of the company, but the audience can very likely be your employees too. Initial adoption of these technologies was done by companies trying to sell directly to the consumer, but companies that have traditionally sold to the Fortune 2000 or to SMB are also starting to adopt ways to bring these tools into their portfolio. The initial adopters of these tools were people who were in the front end of the sales and marketing, but now applications are being developed that are using these tools to support internal and backend processes. Imagine the CEO of a company who wants to engage in ‘chat dialog’ with thousands of employees. Think of the CTO who wants to communicate his product/ architecture vision to the engineers while including constructive feedback from his entire team. These tools are the enablers of these conversations.

So how has the rise of Web 2.0 affected business and changed the way people work.

Web 2.0 is still in its infancy within most organizations. However it has the prospect of changing how marketing departments engages with prospects and customers, how product managers interact with internal and external stake holders, how hiring and recruitment is done, how training is delivered, or how customer support performs their activities today. For example, it is not uncommon that marketing updates their websites once a quarter or every six months with messages that are very carefully crafted but that is totally gibberish to most. It does not have to happen that way. There is no reason why training departments should only conduct instructor led courses that are conducted at prescheduled times that are inconvenient to all and topics that are relevant to few.

Where is the web 2.0 heading

The future is hard to predict. However, some places where Web 2.0 is most like to go next could be..

•Adoption of these tools within the enterprise. Companies shall start using these constructs to reduce the friction and increase the speed in how work is done. Some have labeled this as ‘Enterprise 2.0’. Today integration of the corporate tools such as email, documents etc. is missing. Addressing issues such as security, compliance, would be important before these tools get wider acceptance within enterprise.

•Web 2.0 is very text oriented today. Video, animation, audio, mobile smart phones are some fairly unexplored areas in the web 2.0 world.

•So far Web 2.0 is mostly about free to consumers. Rise of the private club, where members pay to participate or pay for premium services, B2B services is another area that is relatively unexplored.

Honestly, this is just an excuse to listen to “Party in the U.S.A.” without losing all credibility, even if Miley admitted she hasn’t even heard a Jay-Z song.
