Eating is touch carried to the bitter end.

—Samuel Butler

Because of the hunger, we eat, we eat to fill

whatever’s missing—work the earth to give

us what we need. And here at the table

where fruit becomes flesh we find

there is always more hunger, a place

still longing to be fed not with root, not with leaf,

not with thick sweetened cream, but with

touch from the other, with lips reaching round

not with crumbs, not with words but with

bells in them, raven song, softness of stars,

warm hands with strum in them, sleeping ghosts,

a thousand mystical flowers all blossoming now,

skin with new snow, with wolf fur, with plum sunrise,

and because of the hunger, we savor, we devour.

Owen Waters of Infinite Being.com has a point. He has written a book called The Shift: The Revoluti

Owen Waters of Infinite Being.com has a point. He has written a book called The Shift: The Revolution in Human Consciousness. In one of the chapters, he writes that a psychologist, Abraham Maslow (1908-1970), predicted the shift to spiritual consciousness in his hierarchy of needs.

In Maslow’s 1943 paper, “A Theory of Human Motivation”, he states that outer human needs of food, clothing, and shelter, then social or belongingness needs must be met before our inner needs of self-actualization and fulfillment can be developed.

The self-actualized individual becomes aware and self-responsible, with the ability to think and analyze situations independently with a new “global” perspective of what individuals and nations can do to best serve humanity. These individuals won’t cheat or steal because their inner awareness allows them to “feel empathy for the loss that a would-be victim would feel” (Waters).

Transcendence is an even higher understanding and awareness of “unconditional love, altruism, inner joy, a love of nature, the development of intuition (in males as well as females), idealism, and a sense of wisdom which springs from within” (Waters). Is this any different from what the Mayan elder Don Alejandro said in last week’s post? That is, we must overcome “greed, ego, selfishness, separatism, anger, hatred and ignorance” in order to meet the new age gracefully?

In the 1950’s, Maslow predicted only 2% of the population achieved spiritual wisdom. This estimate has expanded to include 20% of the world’s population today and is continuing to increase. Perhaps that is why we are seeing the positive changes taking place today.

This is a growing awareness not a passing fad. This transformation into spiritual consciousness, says Waters, is “where humanity gets to build, literally, Heaven on Earth”. Let’s make this happen!

NOTE: This post is the last in this series on 2012.

It is my hope that this material gives you a brief overview of the issues surrounding 2012. Some of the websites on this subject have also been presented for your perusal. Enjoy.

Finally, be prepared for and help create the future; look forward to a new age. For WE, you and I, ARE CREATING OUR FUTURE NOW. Our thoughts and beliefs influence others and they, in turn, impress still others, and around the world it goes.

Blessings to you all and happy creating!

In cateva cuvinte, persoana care ar putea raspunde unei asemenea intrebari ar trebui sa fie in aceeasi masura si obiectiva, dar si subiectiva.

Asa a fost salvata lumea astazi, in fabrica unde lucrez.

When I was younger, I had a vague interest in politics and would sometimes find myself debating soci

When I was younger, I had a vague interest in politics and would sometimes find myself debating social issues like abortion, criminal justice and capital punishment, *welfare, and our “controlled substances” policies with some of my conservative-leaning peers. At the time, I had a pretty loose grasp of the actual impact of such issues on our society and rarely did any of the key political issues of the day seem to have any real effect on my life – which means they weren’t important enough to warrant more than the ocassional and mostly lighthearted oral controversion. In those days, I wasn’t nearly as interested in the actual facts or truth so much as the emotion that defending my beliefs brought about. At some point, I guess I came to a realization that emotion is a funny thing that can’t always be trusted, especially in an age of consumerism where everyone seems to be trying to sell something and persuasive marketers know precisely how to stir up the emotional response of their target demographic.

Today we’re seeing a frightening influx of corporate crusaders masquerading as concerned citizens, journalists, and “grassroots” organizers/activists. These people have been hand-fed by corporate lobbies and misinformation agents, and are now taking to the streets in an attempt to stop any number of atrocities being committed by the Obama administration and democrats in Congress. The thing is – these “atrocities” aren’t actually being committed at all. There’s a concerted effort on the part of conservative republicans to misinform the public to the point of mass confusion. There are cable “news” programs, blogs, and “news”papers joining this effort, which makes it all the more difficult for honest people to convince the clueless masses that they’re being duped.

It’s amazing to me that, in this “information age” where everything is online and anything you could ever possibly want to know is less than a second away (thanks, Google!), there are people who are still so dependent on cable television and the mainstream media to keep up with current events. Television is a static medium (sometimes, quite literally). With a few exceptions, everything you see on television is heavily scripted and rehearsed. The internet, on the other hand, is constantly changing. You might read a story on a news website one morning and find that, several hours later, the story has been updated with new information. Of course, this happens in television news, too, but updates are dependent on scheduling, time slots, etc. Yes, they do interrupt with “breaking news” sometimes, but they can’t do it every single time there’s a new tidbit of information on a story. On the internet, you can update your web site any time you want – there’s no need to wait until 5pm, 6pm, 11pm, or a commercial break, as there is with television news.

“Watching the news” and “reading the paper” now also mean watching the news online, and reading the “paper” online. Where and how a person gets their “news” can be a great indication of that person’s state of mind and often even their political alignment. The philosophy of conservative “news” publications seems to be, “lie to them and hope they don’t try to verify the information through another source”. This is easier to do on television, particularly when your target demographic appears to be made up primarily from the 50+ , “technologically challenged” (aka: computer illiterate) crowd. Someone who is comfortable with computers and knows their way around the internet will be more likely to cross-reference the information that’s presented to them and discover when they’re being intentionally misled by the media.

The internet is undoubtedly the largest compilation of information the world has ever known, and understanding how to use the internet as a research tool is something that’s drilled into the subconscious of anyone who has ever used it for that purpose, particularly those in the academic community, students, teachers, and the media. When using the internet as a research tool, you have to be diligent in verifying sources. It isn’t enough that an article or study appears in eleventy-billion web pages on a Google search. You also have to consider where they appear most frequently, what those web sites’ motivation for publishing such information is, and if they have an underlying political agenda that may disqualify them as an unbiased and reliable source.

If you really want to be well-informed in today’s politcal/media climate, that means taking the initiative to do a little investigative reporting of your own. If you see something on the news or read something on a news web site that doesn’t sit well, do a little digging. Plug a phrase or some key words into your search engine and see who else is running the “story”, how the facts of the story match up across several different sources, and whether the majority of media outlets where the story is found are unbiased and reliable. It may seem like a daunting task at first, but once you’ve identified a few mostly trustworthy sources, it becomes increasingly easier to spot the bias and determine which outlets are reliable and mostly unbiased and which aren’t.

4 steps toward enlightenment:

1)Go straight to the source: Remember playing “telephone” as a kid? Someone starts a “rumor” that’s whispered amongst a circle of people and by the time it gets back to the person who started it, it’s something completely different? Remember when Al Gore invented the internet, newspapers became obsolete, and the “mainstream media” outlets were trying to find their way back into people’s homes through a complicated series of tubes? Somewhere along the way the MSM must have taken a shortcut through the blogosphere, depriving them of the oxygen required for normal brain function. As a result, some things you hear/read on/in the “news” contain more opinion than fact. Just about every prominent public figure or organization has an established web presence, so it’s often as easy as finding the appropriate URL – especially for any questions relating to the U.S. government. Relating specifically to legislative issues (what’s in a bill, who supports it), everything is posted at the Library of Congress web site.

2) Independent fact-checking web sites: Web sites like Politifact.org and FactCheck.org make a great first-stop for verifying any questionable statements made by prominent political figures or politically-aligned organizations and individuals in the media. Factcheck.org filters out the larger particles of gunk floating on the surface with near-perfect accuracy but doesn’t usually dive into the deeper layers of muck, which is why I consider it a good starting point. Politifact.org’s Truth-O-Meter and Obameter are equally helpful but by no means all-inclusive – but, wait! There’s more…

3)Media watchdogs: Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting is a national media watch group that has been offering well-documented criticism of media bias and censorship since 1986. Media Matters for America is a Web-based, not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) progressive research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media. At the other end of the political spectrum is Newsbusters.org, a project of the Media Research Center (MRC), the leader in documenting, exposing and neutralizing liberal media bias. Keep in mind that these types of “watchdog” organizations are often biased themselves, so anything you read on their websites should also be verified by additional sources, if possible.

4) Google: Pretty self-explanatory. If(when) you hear or read something that just doesn’t sound right, plug some search terms into Google (or whatever search engine you use, I like bing because you can search through news articles or videos and sort them by most recent) – and see what you can find. Anything you read on a blog should be considered opinion rather than fact unless there are reputable news organizations reporting the same information. On the other hand, just because a news organization runs a story and someone blogs about it doesn’t mean that you should consider everything in that blog entry to be factual and visa-versa. The “news” contains so much opinion these days that it actually warrants its own fact-checking (see number 3, above).

* the term “welfare” is used to describe social “safety net” programs in their totality. This term used to be applied to one particular program that distributed cash payments to low-income individuals and families who were struggling financially. That program was retired in the 1990’s and replaced by another program, no longer called “welfare”.

CODO (in DAVEL, 1995, p.165).

• opção pessoal – a escolha da profissão (por vezes compulsória);
• montante de esforço físico e intelectual;
• monotonia ou variação;
• relação entre o que faz e o todo;
• possibilidade de criação e auto-realização;
• status na organização e na sociedade;

In late March of this year, we expanded our First Friday Book Synopsis blog from our original two bloggers, Karl Krayer and me, Randy Mayeux (we are the two who present book synopses at our monthly event, the First Friday Book Synopsis, now in its 12th year). We asked Robert (Bob) Morris and Cheryl Jensen and Sara Smith to join us. (Click here to read about our blogging team). In the process, I have started posting far more frequently, but I’m still no match for Bob Morris, who is prolific and seems to have an ocean of wisdom and insight. But the entire team regularly contributes valuable content. We think you will find useful information in perusing posts from our entire team.

This is primarily a blog about ideas found in business books, with occasional business topics in general making their way into our posts. And, occasionally, we throw in a “fun post.” (Thanks, Bob).

Since we expanded our blogging team, our growth in the number of readers has been significant and dramatic —and it continues to go up each month. No, we are not one of the “big blogs” – but we are finding our tribe, our tribe is finding us, and we think we offer quite a bit of value.

In case you are interested, here are our top three posts of all time, with the title and a brief excerpt (and of course the title is “linked” so you can read the post).

Top Viewed Post Of All Time:
This was prompted by an article in Harper’s: Harper’s: Dehumanized: When math and science rule the school.
I think it is a mistake for the business community to help lower the importance of the humanities. And not just because the humanities would make us better at business communication. I think the humanities will help make us better people.
Well, I think it is obvious we have slipped down a notch or two. While just a brief time ago we were a nation looking for self-esteem and self-actualization in our work, we may be back down to physiological needs and safety needs. We need to pay the bills and survive this jobless recovery, and self-actualization will have to wait a while.
Personally, I wish we had a job-filled recovery. What about you?

I invite you to bookmark/favorite our blog, check in regularly, and help spread the word. And a big thank you to all of our readers.

——————————————–

A Comment About “Comments”:

We invite you to leave comments on our blog. We want comments.

Comments on blogs may be far more numerous on “controversial” or “partisan” blogs. We have fewer comments, but we certainly invite you to join in the conversation.

But we will “reject” a few comments:
We reject comments that are clearly spam.

And occasionally we reject comments that are partisan, or overtly political. We don’t mind disagreement about the ideas in our posts. We certainly welcome correctives and elaborations. But we will reject comments that seek to turn this blog into something this it is not. We are a blog primarily prompted by ideas in business books, and a blog about business issues.

I will take the blame for occasionally rejecting a few comments that do not quite fit our purpose. Of course, I know the argument — that politics and business overlap. A lot. But we will let other blogs fill that role.

Disagree all you want with points made, with quotes and ideas from business book authors… — but please follow the intent of our blog.

Thank you.

Have you ever experienced a situation in which one person consistently out performed another of equal skill? Have you ever had an employee who was regularly out performed by someone having lesser talents? Do you sometimes wonder why you seem to be the only one initiating new ideas?

The simple answer to these and many more similar questions is “motivation”. But it is here that simplicity stops. While the answer maybe simple, the implementation is as complex as human nature itself.

The success or failure of a business can often depend on the involvement of a motivated workforce. A good manager must have a thorough understanding of the process of motivation in order to be successful in working with other people. A review of several of the leading theories of motivation and behavior can help further that understanding.

Abraham Maslow set forth a theory called the hierarchy of needs. What this theory basically states is that human needs have a certain priority to them and motivation will be strongest when the result of an action will satisfy the next highest need.

Maslow identified five categories of human needs. The first set is composed of physical needs, such as food and shelter. In the working environment these needs are addressed primarily through wages, benefits and the creation of a safe working place. Next comes security needs. Security needs in the workplace can manifest themselves as a desire for labor unions, job tenure, retirement and insurance programs. The next level in the hierarchy is the social needs. Once an individual’s physical and security needs have been at least minimally satisfied, social interaction and acceptance by fellow workers becomes increasingly important.

Stop for a minute and give some thought to the management implications of the hierarchy of needs theory. Take for example the boss who organizes a social function for his employees. He is disappointed that some of them didn’t show and the ones that did were not wild in their appreciation for his generosity. The cause of his disappointment might lie in the fact that he was addressing the social needs of his employees but his business may not have adequately satisfied their physical and security needs. Only those actions which address the next level of unsatisfied needs will generate positive results.

The final two steps in Maslow’s hierarchy are self-esteem needs and the need for self-actualization. Self-esteem needs are satisfied with self respect and the respect of others. Self-actualization is the pinnacle of Maslow’s hierarchy and is represented by the desire to maximize one’s talents regardless of the consequences.

Maslow’s work is a theory, not a formula. It can be helpful in explaining why certain management actions are appropriate and others are doomed to failure. For example, it should come as no surprise that a promotion and new title (self-esteem) will not have a maximum effect on motivation if not accompanied by an appropriate salary (physical) increase.

Psychologist Fredrick Herzberg developed a two factor theory for employee motivation. Herzberg called his work the hygiene-motivation theory. He called those factors that produce job dissatisfaction hygiene factors and those that produce satisfaction motivation factors.

Herzberg’s research indicated that if an employer failed to supply the hygiene factors, items such as salary, job security, proper working conditions and fair management, job dissatisfaction was the result. However, when these factors were supplied at an acceptable level, the result is not a motivated workforce but rather just the absence of dissatisfaction. It is the presence of the motivating factors such as the opportunity for achievement, recognition, responsibility and advancement that will ignite the superior performance that we associate with a “motivated” individual.

In light of Herzberg’s theory it is little wonder that the motivational effect of a salary increase by itself is often short lived. In general, he would conclude that a workforce will become more productive when minimal standards have been maintained for the hygiene factors and increasing numbers of motivational factors are introduced.

Porter and Lawler developed a model of motivation that is built on the premise that behavior and effort are based on the perceived value of the rewards that will result from the work and the probability that those rewards will actually materialize. They stress that rewards have an intrinsic element and an external element. They further state that the perceived fairness of a reward will greatly influence motivation.

The work of Porter and Lawler can provide some basis for understanding the “de-motivating” effects of sales goals and bonus programs that are viewed as unattainable by employees. It would perhaps be more advisable as an initial strategy to establish more attainable goals with correspondingly modest but achievable rewards.

The temptation is great to motivate with the KITA method. Because it’s your business, take the time to ponder the implications of the well established research and look for an opportunity to frontally apply a KITA. Sometimes a pull can be more effective than a push.

Concordo.

Será o mundo algo semelhante a MATRIX? PAREM O MUNDO, EU QUERO DESCER!!!

08 de Novembro 2009 – Addendum LOST on The Matrix

So help me God!

Ce taie religiile, in special cele crestine?

Nevoile de baza:

mancare (posturi),

sex (clar!),

Wow!

intimitate sexuala (hahaha!)

3 din 3! Check!

Nevoia de stima:

2 din 5! Still counting!

Drepturile omului, anybody?

Over the past month or so, I’ve been having a conversation with Iain Gray, Red Hat Vice Presid

Over the past month or so, I’ve been having a conversation with Iain Gray, Red Hat Vice President of Customer Engagement, about the ways companies engage with communities. I’ve also written a lot lately about common mistakes folks make in developing corporate community strategies (see my two posts about Tom Sawyer community-building here and here and Chris Brogan’s writeup here).

One idea we bounced around for a while was a mashup of community thinking and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. For those of you who slept in with a bad hangover the day you were supposed to learn about Maslow in your intro psych class (damn you, Jagermeister!), here is the Wikipedia summary:

“[Maslow's hierarchy of needs] is often depicted as a pyramid consisting of five levels: the lowest level is associated with physiological needs, while the uppermost level is associated with self-actualization needs, particularly those related to identity and purpose. The higher needs in this hierarchy only come into focus when the lower needs in the pyramid are met. Once an individual has moved upwards to the next level, needs in the lower level will no longer be prioritized. If a lower set of needs is no longer being met, the individual will temporarily re-prioritize those needs by focusing attention on the unfulfilled needs, but will not permanently regress to the lower level.”

Maslow's hierarchy of needs

Now granted, the needs of a company are very different than the needs of a human being. At its very basic level, a company has a “physiological” need to make money. If that need is not being met, little else will matter. But in an ironic twist, this basic need to make money can actually hinder the company’s ability to make money if it is not wrapped in a more self-actualized strategy.

To explain what I mean, think about the last annoying salesperson who called or emailed you. Why were you annoyed? Probably because it was very clear to you that the salesperson was badly hiding his basic motivation to make money. He wasn’t talking to you because he valued you– he was talking to your wallet.

Now think about the best recent sales experience you’ve had. Mostly likely, this salesperson was being motivated by a higher purpose, perhaps something as simple as a desire to make you happy. Sometimes the most effective salespeople aren’t even in sales at all– like a friend who tells you about a new album you should buy, for example. Or sites like Trip Advisor, where you can learn about where to go on vacation from other folks like you.

When it comes to community strategy, most companies have trouble finding motivation beyond the simple need to make money– and the communities they interact with can tell.

Yet if you look at the greatest companies out there, you’ll find that they usually have a strong sense of identity and purpose– just like Maslow’s self-actualized people. Read anything by Jim Collins and you’ll see what I mean.

For a recent presentation, Iain developed a chart that looks a lot like the one below. And to embarrass Iain, let’s call it the Gray hierarchy of community needs.

The Gray hierarchy of community needs

Need level 1: Listen to the customer

Many companies don’t engage with community beyond their customers. So the most basic community model at the bottom of the pyramid is asking your customers what they want and then giving it to them. This model has been around for hundreds if not thousands of years. It’s pretty much common sense that a company would listen to its customers– they are your core community, since they are the ones that fulfill the basic corporate need to make money.

So at the bottom of the pyramid, any company that wants to have financial success must listen to its customers well, and then provide stuff that they want.

Need level 2: Listen to the community

More and more companies are now opening the aperture a bit wider than just their customers to include both customers and potential customers. And the new technology of the social media revolution makes this easier and cheaper to do at scale. Two good examples of sites where companies are listening to a community (without regard for how much the community members are actually paying the company, if anything) are My Starbucks Idea and Dell IdeaStorm.

These sites allow Starbucks and Dell to “crowd-source” their research and development efforts. The sites are useful for a simple reason– because there are a critical mass of people out there who care enough about these brands to want to help them do their R&D work for free. If we were all so lucky! Many small companies without critical mass of brand awareness and acceptance would fail miserably with this approach. But it works for the biggest companies because they have the brand strength to bring the community to them.

While this strategy is great for some, it is essentially a Tom Sawyer “paint our fence for us” scenario. And if, like Tom, you can get away with it, good for you. But if you want to build a deeper relationship with a community, you must go further.

Need level 3: Innovate through a community

At this level, a company takes things a step further. Rather than simply grabbing the best ideas from a community and then using them to innovate in their own products and services, the company creates a community that actively participates in the work of innovating.

One classic example highlighted in Eric von Hippel and Stefan Thomke’s HBR article Customers as Innovators: A New Way to Create Value is from what was formerly called GE Plastics. According to the article, GE Plastics allowed it’s customers access to its in-house knowledgebase, then allowed them to conduct their own trial and error experiments on the different types of plastics. This helped both the customers– who saved time and money– and the folks at GE Plastics, who saved themselves the expense of doing research on how the products could be used. Everybody worked together, and everyone won.

Some enterprising firms have taken this a step further, creating “communities for hire” that companies can put to work doing their innovation for them. Iain has done some research into this, and he has identified a few companies, most notably Idea Crossing and Innocentive, that will help organize a community of folks willing to innovate with you.

Idea Crossing helps companies harness the knowledge of academic communities to help them innovate. Innocentive does something similar, but takes it a step further by offering cash rewards from the companies seeking the help. The work attracts a broad range of participants from academics, retired subject matter experts, freelance consultants, scientists, and engineers. How successful has this approach been? Innocentive claims a community of over 180,000 participants working on 1,000 challenges with a total cash reward pool of $22M. Not bad.

Need level 4: Innovate within a community

In my mind, each of these approaches is still missing something that makes the open source community model so powerful: humility.

When it is truly doing things the open source way, a company doesn’t have to be at the center of the community, but instead can be a humble member of a community creating something greater than any one member.

As I’ve said before, I get excited when I see big companies focused not only on what they take from the table, but what they bring to the table. I love to see companies that aren’t afraid to be humble members of communities, rather than building the community around themselves.

The whole perspective changes when a company begins innovating within communities rather than trying to create communities around itself. The focus shifts from being about what the company wants to achieve to what everyone in the community wants to achieve together. There is a greater shared purpose that seems pretty self-actualized to me. I think Maslow would probably give us open source folks a high-five if he saw what was going on.

Plenty of people have written about the power of open source as a development model, and what it can create. But I think the open source way is also a powerful brand and cultural model that can create deep, meaningful connections between the company and the communities in which it participates.

Does this guarantee that a company participating in open source communities will make money? Absolutely not. Gotta take care of the basic physiological needs first before you self-actualize. But it is good to know that by participating in communities the open source way, a company might be on its way to achieving a greater purpose than just making money alone.

Could it be possible that even though you’re financially secure, well educated and live comfortably

Could it be possible that even though you’re financially secure, well educated and live comfortably that your life still feels dull, that you’re not living up to your full potential? Sadly the answer could be yes… but it’s not because you are not smart enough, or because you haven’t set personal goals, or even because you can’t afford a more glamorous life. Discover what changes you can make to no longer feel unsatisfied, emotionally indifferent, and how you can turn your life around so that it doesn’t seem trivial.

What motivational changes occur when one’s instinctive biological need for survival is no longer threatened and one’s attention shifts to fulfilling the need to perform at one’s highest potential and one becomes self-actualized? Survival needs include our physiological needs (our need for air, food and water), safety needs (physical and emotional safety), our need for a sense of belonging (family and friendships), and esteem needs (a need for self esteem, confidence and respect). Lacking one of these needs causes discomfort, signaling a threat to our existence – much like a red emergency light indicates danger. When our survival needs are taken care of and we are confident in our prospect of survival we reach an initial level of comfort and become “comfortably bored.” This is when our existence is no longer threatened as we have mastered the skills to survive. However, soon our natural human curiosity becomes bored with the lack of challenge – now we want more, paradise has lost its appeal. We ask ourselves, “What else am I able to conquer?” This inner questioning soon leads us to accomplish great outcomes as we discover financial security, academic excellence, instant gratification, material wealth, and a way of achieving set goals.

Now that we have achieved financial security, academic excellence and found a way of instant gratification and accumulated material wealth we reach a second comfort zone, the zone of “comfortably dull.” We now have so many of the things we once thought were important but it all seems to be in vain. Our accomplishments cured the sense of boredom but now what we have seems trivial. We now face a new dilemma – if what we thought would have given our lives meaning only cured the boredom, what would make our lives feel significant?

To solve this riddle we analyze, scrutinize and intellectualize what we have done. We look for where things may have gone wrong. We tell ourselves, “I’m smart, I’m educated, I can figure this out.” We spin around and around in circles of thought, unable to find a solution that makes sense; but it is not a lack of intellect that got us into this predicament, it was a bad habit, our habit of seeking instant gratification instead of striving for something which could challenge us to stretch towards our potential.

With our refined skills of achieving instant gratification to overcome the boredom of comfort, we became lazy and even worse, possibly petrified to chase after a meaningful cause. With our bad habit in control, a haze of dullness slides down and covers our better judgment. To overcome this bad habit and discover our true potential and find emotional fulfillment a new attitude needs to be developed; one that is able to take into consideration the dichotomies we face daily, that of intellect and feeling, instant gratification and lasting reward, personal significance and the trivial, freedom and responsibility, and comfort and challenge. We need to set goals in new ways that will engage our personal self. Our survival no longer relies on our ability to meet our basic needs, but our need for self-actualization, to be all we can be, rests solely on our ability to ask ourselves for more.

The greatest challenge to overcome is fear of the prospect that if we were to reach our full potential, would all the hard labor have been worthy of the cause, would the dullness have subsided? Consider if it would be more meaningful to strive for your potential or to settle for mediocrity.

Parerea mea.

The concept behind Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is that you cannot move up the pyramid until a lower layer of the pyramid is satisfied. For example, if you are being chased by a bear, your self esteem needs are not important. Thus to move to self actualization, one would have to satisfy the physiological, safety, love/belonging and esteem layers.

Over at another thread, I recalled the experience of proactively handing over some cash after being

Over at another thread, I recalled the experience of proactively handing over some cash after being undercharged for some goods.

In addition, as part of our journey to Laos, we were privileged to visit a remote hill tribe and have the opportunity to distribute much needed books and pencils to the local children, who have very little in the way of educational materials.

Over the years, I have come to realise that “doing good” or “doing the right thing” is something that we can all do.

At various times, we will be presented with opportunities where we can make a difference in other people’s lives, without making a significant sacrifice of our own.

In biblical terms, I guess this would amount to the edict that says “it is better to give than to receive,” or in Buddhist terms perhaps the “opportunity to alleviate the suffering of others.”

However, naturally it is quite possible to “do good” without any thought towards adhering to a particular religion, philosophy or doctrine.

Many people, are obsessed with the pursuit of financial gain and measure the worth of others according to the extent of their accumulated wealth.

I see examples of this in my everyday working life.

Personally I find the pursuit of wealth for wealth’s sake a particularly shallow ambition. Even though I’ve been categorised as a WCP!

Maslow’s theory on the hierarchy of needs suggests that only once we have satisified our own needs for comfort, safety and recoginition, are we then in a position to help others through a process of self-esteem and self-actualisation.

While elements of this theory are logical, there are some people who strive towards self-actualisation without concern for their own personal wealth or aspirations.

What irks me though, is the belief held by Western religions – Christianity in particular – that one has to be a Christian in order to: 1) Lead a pious life, and 2) That Christianity is the only ‘true’ religion and others are false and/or Satanic.

What is it with Christians, that makes them think that they have a monopoly on doing good deeds or in living a pious life?

Often, simply helping others arises from our ability, circumstances, resources and opportunity to do so, at any given point in time.

At a micro level, this might involve handing out some books to kids who need them, at a macro level it might involve opening the country’s doors to people fleeing a life of hardship and suffering.

As a nation we are fortunate to live a privileged lifestyle.

Those that would seek to deny the less fortunate the opportunity to be a part of this society through fearmongering and cries of border protection must surely fall within the ranks of the most selfish and self-serving in our society.

For decades, immigrants have proven to be some of the most hard working and productive members of Australian society.

What motivates conservatives on one hand to deny the less fortunate the ability to be a part of this society, and yet on the other claim to have “God on their side?”

Conservatives do not have a monopoly on morality, despite the rantings of people like Tony Abbott, and this probably explains their steady decline.

In fact, it could be argued that people who claim to have “God on their side” are some of the most hate-filled mean-spirited people you can find.

I’ve previously talked about emotionally engaging your reader, or giving your audience an emot

I’ve previously talked about emotionally engaging your reader, or giving your audience an emotional response to improve your screenplays, but how do you define emotion? That’s a bit like trying to define love and create it in a test tube. But here goes anyway.

Emotions can be broadly defined as a mental and physiological changes in response to an external stimuli evoking feelings, behaviours and thoughts. Hopefully the stimulus is your screenplay. Punch up every scene with emotion. Take your audience through a rollercoaster ride. Make them feel many emotions in a scene, one after the other. Make them laugh. Make ‘em cry, and not by peeling onions. The only thing that should be flat is your stomach.

The five basic human emotions are happiness, sadness, love, anger and fear. Two are positive and two are negative. Anger is an interesting response, because it relates to “fight or flight” situations, where we must act to protect ourselves and sits somewhere in the middle It is associated with the release of adrenalin. Our hearts beat faster, we sweat, our concentration improves, we become alert and lose some our ability to feel pain. Some psychologists believe all are emotions lie along a spectrum polarised by fear on one end and happiness on the other. Everything else is a subcategory of these two key emotions.

Psychologists have characterised emotional response in terms of basic human needs. If these needs are unbalanced or unmet, then a negative response occurs. If they are met.. well we’ve all been in love and floated on clouds. If we experience them in abundance (manic behaviour), then we have psychological problems. Consider Maslow’s theory of human needs.

ABRAHAM MASLOW’S THEORY OF HUMAN MOTIVATION – HIERARCHY OF HUMAN NEEDS

These are listed from the basic to more evolved. Typically they are structured as a pyramid.

Physiological – breathing, food, water, sex, sleep, homeostatis, excretion. These are unconscious actions designed to keep us alive.

Safety – security, body, employment, resources, morality, family, health, property, shelter. These are conscicous actions designed to protect us.

Love/ Belonging – friendship, family, sexual intimacy. These are sociological actions designed to boost relationships. We are social animals.

Esteem – self-esteem, confidence, achievement, respect of others, respect by others. These are outgrowths of ego designed to allow us to function in a community.

Self- Actualization – morality, creativity, spontaneity, problem solving, lack of prejudice, acceptance of facts. These are egocentric behaviours allowing us to function as individuals.

Karl Iglesias has defined emotions in stories as being voyeuristic (allowing audience to experience a character) and sympathise with them), vicarious (allowing audience to empathise with a character and identify with them, and visceral (primal emotions such as anticipation, relief, dread, suspense).

A good story is built on a character wanting something and something or someone opposes their efforts. In it’s rudimentary form, this is called conflict which creates drama in a script.

In terms of stories, Karl Iglesias has reduced scripts to requiring four emotional elements. Audience love stories to satisfy the following needs:

to obtain new information

to bond/ socialise

to understand and resolve conflicts

to get completion/ closure

to be entertained

So there you have it. Add some resonance to your scripts and give them some impact.

Back in 1943 a psychologist called Maslow published what he termed a ‘hierarchy of needs‘ that can be applied to every human being. At the bottom level are physiological needs that every human needs to exist, like shelter, food and water. At the very top are factors that contribute to a feeling of self-actualization, like morality and creativity. You can read more here. The triangle shape is deliberate, in that there are a much greater number of people at the physiological level and only a small number who reach self-actualization.

We can apply Maslow’s concept to the user and their experience of any product or service. Starting from a base of does the product or service perform at a basic functional level to the ideal of the user being so engaged that they lose all track of time and enter a state of flow.

Take a look at the Users’ Hierarchy of Needs below and think about where your product or service fits. What actions are you taking to step up to the next level and improve your users’ experience?
