The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines said at least 10 local reporters were part of the convoy. Their newspapers and radio stations have not been able to reach them, raising fears that they were killed. If confirmed, it would be the “largest single massacre of journalists ever,” according to Paris-based Reporters Without Borders.

The president’s office termed the attack the worst political violence in recent history.

“Covering the news has always been dangerous in the Philippines, but the wanton killing of so many people makes this an assault on the very fabric of the country’s democracy,” said Bob Dietz, Asia program coordinator for the Committee to Protect Journalists in New York.

Police said the convoy of 40 people was going to register Ismael Mangudadatu to run for provincial governor when they were stopped by some 100 gunmen and taken to a remote mountainous area.

* * *
* * *
“I don’t think the President’s friendship with the Ampatuans will be severed,” sabi ni Fajardo.
“Dahil lang ba sa nangyari ay tatalikuran na namin ang mga Ampatuan?” dagdag pa ni Fajardo.
Hindi na nahiya si Pangulo.
Sa kabilang dako, nanawagan si GMA ng day of mourning para sa mga napatay ng mga Ampatuan.
Anong klaseng tao itong si Pangulong Gloria?
* * *

Maurice Clemmons, the 37-year-old Tacoma man being sought for questioning in the killing this morning of four Lakewood police officers, has a long criminal record punctuated by violence, erratic behavior and concerns about his mental health.

Nine years ago, then-Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee granted clemency to Clemmons, commuting his lengthy prison sentence over the protests of prosecutors.

“This is the day I’ve been dreading for a long time,” Larry Jegley, prosecuting attorney for Arkansas’ Pulaski County said tonight when informed that Clemmons was being sought for questioning in connection with the killings.

Australian journalists have a lot to be thankful for. They live in a relatively safe and free enviro

Australian journalists have a lot to be thankful for. They live in a relatively safe and free environment. The violence that they will, at most, get will probably be a bashing from their news subject. And yet the government will protect them even if they run after government personalities, not for witch-hunting, but to deliver information on the politician’s performance to the public.

In the Philippines, it’s a different story. As a journo-friend puts it, the pay is appalling and working condition is not enticing and yet a few dare to take on the job that most people would likely avoid. Last 23 November, murderers, thugs and rapist sealed the Philippines’ ranking as the most dangerous place for journalists in the world. Around 30 journalists among with lawyers and common citizens were brutally murdered while some were raped. It did not help that majority of the victims were journalists. The slow action from the government became clear as the primary suspect tagged in the carnage was one of the greatest allies of Philippine President Gloria Arroyo.

In light of these events, Philippine media outfits and journalists formed the November 23 Movement and released the following statement:

A Challenge of Conscience

The brutal, indiscriminate mass murder on Monday in Ampatuan town, in Maguindanao province, raises the ultimate challenge of conscience. It carries the culture of impunity at work in this country to such levels of horror that, if it remains unpunished for long, can send the nation into an inexorable descent into absolute dehumanization.

The crime thus calls for swift justice, which can only be achieved through a credible and independent process, which in turn can only be achieved without the hand of this government – a government justly mistrusted generally and openly friendly precisely to the very members of the clan accused in the massacre.

We, ourselves colleagues of the more than a score journalists who were killed, demand the following:

One, the creation of a commission outside the government to investigate the crime;

Two, the arrest and prosecution of all the people involved in it in any way, as murderers themselves or their protectors;

Three, the formation of a special court to try the case;

Four, fully guaranteed protection for the witnesses;

Five, the disarming and dismantling of all private armies, such as those evidently employed in the massacre.

Six, the enlistment of persons of unquestioned probity in the whole process;

And finally, the resignation of the government if it fails to deliver such basic satisfaction – indeed, the very same government that has encouraged, by partisanship and conspiracy, the culture of impunity of which the massacre has been the most abominable manifestation.

Signed:

On November 25, 2009, the world is shocked at the news: 57 bodies were recovered buried in shallow graves atop a hill in Maguindanao. The victims: the wife of a governatorial candidate, her friends and relatives, mediamen from different new agencies, and passers-by who unlucky witnessed the abduction of the group by the alleged 100 armed men led by Datu Unsay Mayor Andal Ampatuan Jr., a political ally of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. The massacre was very horrid in depiction and was strongly condemned using the strongest word possible.
Ampatuan is a member of the ruling Lakas-Kampi-CMD coalition and a son of an extremely powerful politician in the region who has ensured local support for President Arroyo in previous elections.

The military and the relatives of the victims had previously named the bodyguards of the Ampatuans as the suspects in Monday’s massacre in which relatives and supporters of a rival politician, and a group of journalists who went with them to cover the filing of his Certificte of Candidacy, were abducted and brutally killed in a village on the outskirts of a town that bears the clan’s name.

A new witness has implicated eight other members of the Ampatuan family in last week’s massacre in Maguindanao, Justice Secretary Agnes Devanadera said yesterday.

Devanadera said the new witness surfaced Friday and disclosed that the Ampatuans, including Datu Unsay Mayor Andal Ampatuan Jr., had planned the killings during a family gathering.

Although Devanadera did not directly name the Ampatuans who were present at the meeting, she said a hold-departure order has been issued to prevent the eight family members from leaving the country.

They are Maguindanao Gov. Andal Ampatuan Sr., Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) Gov. Zaldy Ampatuan, and relatives Nords Ampatuan, Akmad Ampatuan Sr., Akmad Ampatuan Jr., Saudi Ampatuan Jr., Bahnarian Ampatuan and Sahid Islam Ampatuan.

Responding to the murder of more than 30 news media people in a massacre in Maguindanao southern Philippines, members of The Filipino Press Group of Sydney launched an appeal today for funds to help relieve some of the pain now experienced by victims’ families.

Funds raised will be delivered to the families through the National Press Club of the Philippines (NPCP), according to Bayanihan News editor-publisher Domingo ‘Nonoy’ Perdon.

Newspaper columnist Neria Soliman said the group would seek further contributions from affiliate organisations of the Philippine Community Council of NSW.

”At least one reporter who died in the massacre had a family of wife and five children,” said NewsPinoy editor Titus Filio, who had lived in the Maguindanao area in his youth. ”News media people do not earn much, so their families must be really suffering.”

His sentiments were echoed by Mr Perdon, who had proposed the appeal as a grave emergency measure, Ms Soliman, Philippine Sentinel editor Dino Crescini, TheFilipinoAustralian web publisher Romy Cayabyab, and Radio Sandigan producer Jaime Pimentel at a special meeting in Rooty Hill this morning, Saturday, November 28.

Donations will be accepted by the Group’s spokesman Jaime Pimentel over the next two weeks, starting Monday, November 30, 2009. Mr Pimentel will open a trust account in the Burwood branch of ANZ Banking for the sole purpose of collecting the donations. Mr Perdon, who has direct connections with officials of the NPCP, will arrange for delivery of funds.

For further details, ring (02) 9744 9966 after hours or (02)9588 8730 work hours.

By ALASTAIR MCINDOE
…’On Monday, on a highway cutting through a banana grove, a large force of gunmen – reports say around 100 - intercepted the convoy of family members and supporters of Buluan vice-mayor Esmael Mangudadatu, also from a prominent local Muslim clan. They were on their way to the provincial capital to file his candidacy papers for Maguindanao’s governorship in next year’s general elections. It’s a position that Ampatuan’s father had occupied unopposed since 2001 and which Ampatuan planned to contest to keep the seat in the family. The Mangudadatu group was herded to what appears to have been a prepared killing ground in a hilly area a few kilometers from the highway. Television footage showed bullet-ridden bodies sprawled around the vehicles; others had been thrown into in a mass grave and covered with earth. There are signs that the killing was done at point-blank range, using high-powered firearms. A mechanical digger at the site was used to bury some of the bodies and vehicles. It is presumed everyone in the group died…

…’The authorities are now desperately trying to prevent a revenge-driven clan war - or “rido” as it is called in Mindanao – between the two families. A day after the killings, Arroyo put two southern provinces and a city under a state of emergency and deployed more troops to the area. All permits to carry firearms there have been canceled. “Retaliatory violence can be expected although a small chink of hope remains that Mangudadatu may rise above rido and avert further bloodshed,” says Ian Bryson, a regional analyst at Singapore-based Control Risks’… -Time

by Myka Bomediano

Fifty-seven mangled bodies have been recovered in Maguindanao. The Ampatuan Massacre places the Philippines on the map for being the most dangerous country for journalists. With one setting, thirty-seven of them died, together with women and lawyers who were only to file a Certificate of Candidacy for Esmael Mangudadatu.

Never in anyone’s darkest nightmare would a scene like that of the Ampatuan Massacre ever come to mind. The astonishing number of dead, all for the greed of power can send goosebumps up and down the spine.
It was more than three days later when the first arrest have been made.

How did this happen?

In the beginning, the reports said that Andal Ampatuan Jr. wasn’t considered a suspect in the brazen display of brutality because there were no concrete evidences against him. The mutilated bodies and mangled vehicles dumped in a mass grave site were but circumstantial. So was the government backhoe that was on the location.

(Ampatuan however now faces multiple murder charges, and will be filed more this Tuesday, according to Justice Secretary Agnes Devanadera. Eight other suspects, all from the Ampatuan Clan, are also in surveillance.)

Ampatuan has nothing to be afraid of— or so he thinks. After all, his family is protected by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo herself. They are a powerful clan. He already instilled fear in the people of Maguindanao—and if anyone squeals, his cronies can hunt that person down.

It made no difference to the mastermind of the massacres if one or fifty-seven were killed. For a beast like that, mass murder is so simple that it won’t matter if he kills a few dozen, even a few hundred more.
The politics in this country has always been questionable at best. This recent show of brazen brutality gave new meaning to “playing dirty” for elections. And nobody — not women, children, seniors, nor journalists– is safe.

It is shocking to find the lengths that people will go to for power.

A mass murder of fifty-seven, some raped before being killed is nothing less than horrifying.

These scenes are brutal enough to belong only in nightmares, but here we are, living in a country which turned those nightmares into reality.

by Rachell Janine Leyva

November 23, 2009, Monday, proved to be a day darker than the year 2012 in the movie.

It is inexplicably darker because of the 64 persons massacred in Maguindanao. The despicable act of human carnage happened as the convoy of Vice Mayor Toto Mangudadatu’s wife and two sisters were heading to the Provincial Capitol to file his certificate of candidacy for governor. Along with the convoy were supporters and journalists. Datu Unsay mayor Andal Ampatuan Jr. is the alleged mastermind. His father Andal Ampatuan Sr. is currently the governor of Maguindanao province and is planning to run again despite term limits. He has won all three terms unopposed. The Ampatuans are close allies of the Arroyo administration, with their region contributing to her win in the 2006 elections. Before her death, Mangudadatu’s wife was still able to call him and attested that it was Ampatuan’s men who blocked their way.

Much is to be said about this atrocity. We can question the culture of impunity in our country, the tradition of the “utang na loob” the people’s lack of values and faith in the Almighty; but five days later, we still have no answers. Life in areas apart from the site of the massacre has continued with people seemingly nonchalant about the monsters of people that are living among us and playing God over people’s lives. We have become overly desensitized to terror and crimes that we cannot identify anymore when enough is enough. It’s the hopelessness at the back of everyone’s minds that’s eating our souls and spoiling our feelings. The perpetrators of the crime are despicable, but how about us? Do we care enough to effect change? Do we care enough to seek individually a way to make this country better? Is it not despicable that we care when the news comes out and then forget about it the next day?

After we identify with the problem, we look not for solutions but for the easy way out. We see ways to get out of the problem but not ways to address its very root to ensure that it doesn’t happen again. This massacre should open our eyes to the vicious cycle of passivity and irresponsibility, especially with regard to the votes we cast during elections. We have all become part of the cycle and this has lead to the mass murder of those who were courageous enough to go against the tide. We are all in danger, directly or indirectly. We are in danger of handing over this country to the blood-stained hands of criminals; thereby becoming accessories to the crime we detest.

The only way to rise above the danger is to be strong enough to take responsibility for our actions. The elections is not the end all and be all of good citizenship. The fate of our country lies in our diligence to safeguard the welfare of its people from corrupt practices and a dysfunctional system. It starts from us refusing to tolerate the malpractices we see are happening in our daily interactions with institutions like the government. It starts with us building our awareness about societal issues and actually wanting to do something about it. We are to work on believing that we still can make a difference, that we will not be swallowed by a corrupt system and that ultimately by changing for the better, we can turn things around.

In an article inspired by “What does Ray Nagin, Diane Downs and Richard Reid have in common?”, I dec

In an article inspired by “What does Ray Nagin, Diane Downs and Richard Reid have in common?”, I decided to write what Lori Drew, Osama bin Laden, and Adolf Hitler have in common. If you are thinking that I am lumping all of them together, which they all have been subjected too, especially with Lori Drew. You are wrong. Well, no one is going to argue that Drew, Bin Laden, and Hitler are the most reviled figures in history and are rightfully regarded as public enemies. Let’s review who they are and their evil misdeeds.

Lori Drew, husband Curt, daughter Sarah, and Ashley Grills harassed a girl to suicide by using MySpace in Fall of 2006. Bin Laden masterminded the 9/11 Terrorist Attacks on the East Coast of America in 2001. Hitler was the leader of Nazis Germany from 1933 to 1945, which started World War II and Holocaust.

On the surface, what they did are dramatically different. One girl died from suicide after being mentally tortured; 3,000 people died on live television and many more could die from the toxic dust and smoke; 30 million died in genocide and left Eurasia in shambles. Beyond that, Drew, Bin Laden, and Hitler have a lot in common. What is it? They feel that they are being victimized and persecuted by imagined enemies. They are addicted to victimhood and maintain that feeling to assert dominance and control other people, by bullying, mass murder, terrorism, or genocide. They always see themselves as victims and blame the victim for their problems.

Recall the Secret Service study they conducted on school shooters after the Columbine Massacre. There was no one clear profile of a so called typical profile of a school shooter. However, they found that 71 percent of school shooters felt a sense of persecution. Few of them were actually bullied, contrary to popular beliefs. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold saw themselves as victims, when in fact they were bullies themselves with a laundry list of discipline problems and brushes with the law. Quite frankly, after the Columbine Massacre, I took great offense at the way the media portrayed Harris and Klebold as victims of bullying. This is the same mantra used after Columbine, 9/11, Seung-Hui Cho, Steven Kazmierczak, and Nidal Hasan. The media plays “blame the victim” game because the attackers were tormented. All the victims killed had no connection to the perpetrators.

One can say that Harris and Klebold were bullies because bullies bully because they feel they are being bullied themselves and have to lash out. They bully to feel “good” about themselves. Yes, it is generally true that bullies do not have any lack of self-esteem. They have high self-esteem, but having high self-esteem does not translate into success. In fact, high self-esteem is dangerous because people do not have to will to change. They are happy and content with their life as it is. People with higher self-esteem are more likely to be addicted to alcohol and drugs and commit crime. Ask any person who remembers the bully, chances are they will say they ended up as either drug addicts, in prison, or dead.

Lori Drew posed as “Josh Evans” to see if Megan Meier was talking bad about Sarah after Megan allegedly called Sarah a “ugly Lesbian”. Drew was motivated by protecting her daughter from bullies. The Drews were described as over involved and pushy parents, especially in regards with Sarah, which made people feel resentful. The Drews are a classic “helicopter parent”. Also, Lori Drew was described as sociable and clingy to a point of annoying. She was considered an outcast in her neighborhood. Drew wanted to snoop and teach Megan a lesson for not being friends and bullying Sarah. Drew scapegoated her for all problems in life because Sarah was not happy and was no longer a friend. Compounding it, Drew was upset that Megan was losing weight faster than Sarah and she bad mouthed her for that. Drew viewed herself and family as being repeatedly victimized by Megan. The Drews and Ashley Grills would later send ugly messages that called her “fat” and “whore” to Meier and she committed suicide on October 16, 2006. The case would be revealed a year later by Steve Pokin, which would make her one of the most hated persons in years.

The Megan Meier case is reminiscent of Gertrude Baniszewski, who was enraged after Sylvia Likens accused her daughter Paula and Stephanie of being prostitutes. Baniszewski felt the sense that Likens was persecuting her and her family and she needed to stop it at all cost. Baniszewski got her children and neighborhood children to torture Likens to death to teach her a lesson. Also, she wanted to protect her and her daughter’s reputation and tried to portray themselves as “virtuous” and “clean” and attended a fundamentalist church. In reality, Stephanie and Gertrude were sexually promiscuous and had a child out of wedlock. Baniszewski was often subjected to abuse at her live-in boyfriend and constantly felt victimized over and over and Likens pushed her over the edge. Baniszewski thought torturing Likens would be an act of redemption.

Osama bin Laden, the leader of Al-Qaeda, was behind the horrid September 11, 2001 Terrorist Attacks in New York, Arlington, and Shanksville. Four airplanes were hijacked by terrorists and they attacked the World Trade Center, Pentagon, and a failed one near Shanksville. The attack leveled the World Trade Center and left the Pentagon burning. 3,000 people died in the terrorist attack on live television, mostly from the collapse of the towers. Bin Laden was partly motivated by how Saudi Arabia allowed America to use the land to attack Iraq in the Persian Gulf War of 1990. He blames America for that, despite the fact that the Saudi Royal Family allowed and they could of denied that access to America. Bin Laden sees America and the West as being oppressive to Muslims and supporting Israel. He views Muslims as victims of “Western Imperialism” and “Islamophobia”. Bin Laden sees Palestinians being oppressed and victimized by the Jews, who are helped by America. This is despite the fact that the Israeli/Palestinian conflict is more political than religious.

Bin Laden believes that suicide bombers are courageous and should be employed to teach America and the West a lesson. Also, Bin Laden encourages that Muslims protect fellow Muslims from America and the West by engaging in Jihad or “Holy War”. Also, where Bin Laden is from, they have a revenge culture because the climate is desert, which is dry. Dry climate makes bodies decay less and people are more likely to remember.

Adolf Hitler took advantage of Germans’ desperation from the Great Depression. It was after World War I and the Treaty of Versailles imposed harsh punishment on Germany. They had to pay huge reparations. They had to print a lot of money, which led to hyperinflation during the Great Depression. Hitler blamed Jews for all of Germany’s problems from hyperinflation to Treaty of Versailles. Hitler saw Jews as backstabbers and traitors out to destroy the Germans. He viewed Germans and Germany as victims of “Jewish” control and it had to be stopped. Hitler believed that Jews “raped” Germany during and after World War I. Hitler is voted in the 1933 election and rose to power on the guise of “hope” and “change”.

Hitler wanted to protect the Germans from the Jews by passing laws that discriminated against Jews. Hitler wanted to teach Jews a lesson in every way possible. By the time World War II starts, Jews were rounded up and sent off to death camps to be killed. Hitler also went after Slavs, Gypsies, Jehovah’s Witness, and disabled people because he saw them as undesirable. In the end, 30 million people died and Eurasia was left a total mess with 80 million killed in World War II. Nearly 70 percent of the European Jews were wiped out.

Many genocidal maniacs are paranoid and obsessed with protecting people. They use their persecution complex to impose their tyranny on the people. Joseph Stalin was another paranoid psychopath like Hitler. He went after anyone who were enemies of the state. Stalin viewed the state and himself as being victimized by dissidents. He had those infamous show trials, caused famines that killed 7 million Ukrainians, and many untold number of people would be sent off to Gulags in Siberia to a life time of hard labor and death.

Another example of a dictator with a sense of constant victimization is Saddam Hussein. He believed in protecting the Arab people from the Persians. Hussein viewed Arabs as victims of “Persian” cultural imperialism. He invaded Iran after the 1979 Islamic Revolution because he was afraid of Shiites would spread their influence, which he saw it as Persian cultural imperialism. The 1980 Iran-Iraq War had Arabs of all religious background, Muslim and Christian, because they saw Persians as the common enemy worthy of destruction. When Hussein was executed in late 2006, his last words were “Down with Persians”, a testament to his hatred towards Persians.

Cult leaders are often paranoid and use that paranoia to maintain control on their followers. Cult leaders feel victimized. Jim Jones, Charles Manson, and Fred Phelps come to mind. Jones was an avowed communist and Stalinist and felt that the CIA was spying on him and People’s Temple. They would later flee to Guyana to establish Jonestown. Than Congressman Leo Ryan came to investigate that followers were held against their will. Jone’s men attack Ryan’s convoy and from their 909 people die from mass suicide and murder. Manson was paranoid about a race war called “Helter Skelter”. Manson’s cult went on a brutal killing spree that killed actress Sharon Tate and LaBianca couple in 1969. Phelps is the leader of the Westboro Baptist Church. They are notorious for picketing funerals and hating homosexuals. He always talks about how his so-called church is being persecuted and that picketing funerals is a way to stop the persecution. Phelps is clearly a closeted homosexual with serious issues of self hate. It is probable that Phelps might have illegitimate children because Shirley Phelps-Roper has an illegitimate son named Samuel.

Many so-called civil rights leaders, like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are very paranoid of racism and bigotry against Blacks and are addicted to victimhood. Victimhood becomes part of them. Any slighting that Blacks are subjected too will put them in the spotlight. In many ways, Jackson and Sharpton are addicted to victimhood. They feel that Blacks are denied equal access whether it is education or a job. In reality, Jackson and Sharpton are racists themselves and have expressed bigotry. Jackson called New York “Hymie Town” because of its largest Jewish population. Jackson is part of another underlying problem, anti-Semitism. A sad irony because Jews helped Blacks in the Civil Rights Movement.

What does this all mean? Feeling the sense of persecution and victim blaming are recurring theme among evil people. Does paranoia and feeling the sense of persecution lead to evil and violence. Not always. It is healthy to have some paranoia. It makes us human. It is common that we are all paranoid to some extent. We don’t like it when people talk bad about us. Who does? Of course we do not get so consumed with it to a point that it drives us to feel victimized. We all have felt victimized at some point. There are other factors as well to consider. Paranoid is a sign of a personality disorder, which is the hallmark of a psychopath.

The constant state of paranoia and feeling victimized day in day out and it becomes part of them. That is unhealthy and dangerous. Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, Jim Jones, and Lori Drew come to mind. Also, their paranoia was mixed with anti-social, narcissism, and deviance, which is a dangerous mix. Hitler, Stalin, Jones, and Drew are considered psychopaths. However, feeling victimized and psychopathy need not to be the case. Bin Laden who lacks any psychopathic behavior is very focused on one thing. A psychopath usually lacks focus, which would be a bad thing for terrorist, especially in an organized one like Al-Qaeda.

Being paranoid and feeling victimized are not a bad thing in healthy doses. For some, being paranoid and feeling victimized is an addiction that can turn deadly. The very thing they fear and hate becomes them. Just look at Adolf Hitler, Osama bin Laden, Jim Jones, Eric Harris/Dylan Klebold, Jesse Jackson, and Lori Drew. They constantly felt victimized and needed to protect the very thing they feared and hated. It became them. In some cases, it turned deadly.

What a f*cked-up family; talk about bad genes! Anyway, her nephew needs to be sentenced to death, not put in jail, not tried as mentally insane; just eliminated, the same way he and his aunt eliminated other people (and they were innocent victims)! TGO

Refer to story below. Source: CBS Broadcasting

Salwa Merrige Abrams was an opera singer on the rise to stardom. But in 1973, she became a killer.

“It was one of the saddest events of my law enforcement career, totaling over 40 years,” said Lloyd Hough, a retired homicide detective.

Hough was the lead investigator on the case. He says it was in a South Miami home where Merrige-Abrams killed her husband, two young children, and herself. Merriga-Abrams was upset her husband had filed for a divorce.

Back then, Hough was just a cub detective, only on the job for three years.

“I don’t care whether you’ve been in it three years or 30 years. When there’s children involved, you never forget it. You just don’t forget it,” Hough told CBS4’s Gio Benitez.

For 36 years, he hasn’t forgotten. Just days ago, he saw the face and name of Paul Michael Merhige.

“And I said, oh my gosh, I wonder if that’s Mike’s family,” said Hough.

It is the family he has come to know.

“They weren’t drug dealers, they weren’t hoodlums, they were true, nice, American people,” said Hough.

Salwa Merrige Abrams was Paul Merhige’s aunt. Hough says she left the car running in the driveway with her 10-year-old and 14-year-old inside. She brought her husband into the master bedroom and shot him dead. Then brought each one of those kids into the house, one by one, and killed them, leaving one of them dead right in their own bedroom.

Some 36 years after murdering her family, police say her nephew took a gun in the same way, allegedly killing his two sisters, his older aunt, and his six-year-old cousin.

“This has wiped out their family, wiped out their family,” said Hough.

While he’s not working this case, this is another massacre Lloyd Hough will never forget.

“I have great admiration for that family. They’ve had more tragedy than anybody deserves,” he said.

*By CARLOS H. CONDE*
*The New York Times
Published: November 27, 2009*

DAVAO CITY, the Philippines — Most or all of the 22 women among the 57
people massacred Monday in the southern Philippines were sexually mutilated,
the authorities said Friday, adding grim details to the catalog of horrors
that has already emerged.

“Even the private parts of the women were shot at,” the justice secretary,
Agnes Devanadera, said on national television. “It was horrible. It was not
done to just one. It was done practically to all the women.”

While work continued to identify all the dead, the National Union of
Journalists of the Philippines said that it appeared that 30 journalists and
their assistants had been killed. About a dozen of the victims were the
relatives, lawyers or supporters of Esmael Mangudadatu, a local politician
whose determination to challenge the entrenched Ampatuan clan in a
gubernatorial election apparently touched off the violence.

Investigators said that the rest of the victims, perhaps as many as 15,
happened to be stopped at a checkpoint along the highway in Ampatuan, a town
in Maguindanao Province, when the convoy of Mangudadatu supporters and
journalists was stopped by police officers and militiamen loyal to the
Ampatuans. They were killed to eliminate witnesses, investigators said.

Ms. Devanadera said that several of the men accused of taking part in the
slaughter had surrendered and offered to testify. Though the killings
violated a traditional custom against harming women, the men seemed to be
troubled more by the deaths of the journalists and the bystanders.

“They are bothered by their conscience because they thought that only the
Mangudadatus would be shot,” Ms. Devanadera said.

Andal Ampatuan Jr., a local mayor who is suspected of having ordered the
killings, turned himself in Thursday, protesting his innocence. He is
expected to be charged with murder next week. Ms. Devanadera told The
Philippine Daily Inquirer that Mr. Ampatuan’s brother Zaldy and his father,
Gov. Andal Ampatuan Sr., the clan patriarch, were also under investigation.

Mr. Mangudadatu’s wife, Genalyn, his two sisters and two lawyers working for
him were among the women who were mutilated and murdered. He said on
Thursday that his wife had been shot “in her private parts.”

Ms. Devanadera said that the zippers of the women’s pants had been undone
and that some of the women had had their pants pulled down. She said the
authorities were still trying to determine whether the women had been raped,
but “it is certain that something bad was done to them.”

Felicisimo Khu, a police superintendent, said Wednesday that the women’s
bodies had been found separate from the men’s.

At least one witness, according to Ms. Devanadera, told investigators that
Andal Ampatuan Jr. was on the scene giving commands but that it was not
clear whether he fired a gun.

On Friday, Mr. Mangudadatu, leading a 50-vehicle convoy guarded by soldiers
and heavily armed police officers, finally filed his certificate of
candidacy to run for governor of Maguindanao — precisely what the others
were on their way to do when they were murdered. “I had to do it,” he said
in a telephone interview on Friday. “I owe it to my dear wife, to my family,
to my supporters and to all those journalists who died while doing their
job.”

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has been under intense pressure to pursue
and prosecute the killers. The Ampatuan family is her closest political ally
in the southern Philippines and played a critical role in her 2004 election
victory. Her government has assisted the Ampatuans and other area clans in
building potent militias to combat the secessionist and Islamist
insurgencies that have plagued the region.

On Friday, she ordered Interior Secretary Reynaldo Puno to take direct
control of the autonomous region in Muslim Mindanao, a collection of
provinces on and near the island of Mindanao, and to suspend local, police
and military officials if necessary to proceed with the investigation.

A military spokesman said Friday that two ground commanders of the armed
forces in Maguindanao had been relieved of their commands. The military on
Thursday took control of the provincial capital, Shariff Aguak, and other
towns, a day after disarming dozens of militiamen employed by the Ampatuans.

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, the largest media
group in the country, urged the government on Friday to form a special court
to try the suspects. “This is to help ensure that no whitewash will happen
and to identify the roots and those responsible for this unimaginable
crime,” said Nestor Burgos Jr., the group’s chairman.
