Billions of dollars are spent each year by people who want to make themselves feel better. Whether this money is spent on beauty, fashion, or gym memberships this money goes towards making our ever stressed out population feel just a little bit better mental or physically. Well now studies show that getting a massage has some great health benefits that will make you want to indulge! In fact, research shows that getting messages can ease insomnia, boost immunity, prevent PMS, and more.

With regular massages you can effectively say goodbye to pain. This may seem like somewhat of a no brainer but rubdowns can be especially effective for back pain. Some researchers have even found that getting a massage actually works better than other treatments such as chiropractic therapy and acupuncture. This happens because get massaged boosts the feel good hormone serotonin and dopamine which block’s your nervous system’s pain receptors.

If you struggle for insomnia you can say hello to dreams with massages as well. Studies have found that getting massages increase delta waves which are linked with deep sleep. No wonder you find yourself drifting whenever you are on the table!

It has also been found that getting massaged actually helps prevent you from getting sick. It boosts your natural fighting cells, which is the immune system’s first line of defense against invading germs and bacteria. Researchers have known that cortisol destroys fighting cells and since they also found that getting massaged decreases cortisol levels it automatically gives your immune system a boost. In fact, massage has even been found to boost immunity in those people with compromised immune systems, such as cancer patients.

Decreased levels of cortisol and more serotonin and dopamine also mean less stress, anxiety, and depression in general. This increased sense of relaxation is one reason why some hospitals offer massage to anxious patients awaiting surgery and cancer patients going through chemo.

Finally, it is no big surprise that if you are an active person, massage can cause less cramps and pain due to the improved blood circulation that delivers oxygen and nutrients to the cells. So when you start to feel guilty about treating yourself to a massage just remind yourself about all of these awesome health benefits you get from them!

Well, it just happened that the last game was played on his birthday eve and we ordered room service so we didn’t miss an at bat. Glad we opened a bottle of fine champagne, too, because it was an apt celebration to our team’s victory and the beginning or myhusband’s birthday bash.

I booked him a “Gentlemen’s” facial and deep tissue massage at the hotel’s Aqua Serena Spa (www.aquaserenaspa.com) and while at it an Anti-aging ritual and deep tissue rub for myself, especially since anyone celebrating a birthday gets a free 50 minute treatment when accompanied by a companion who purchases one (so it’s half price essentially, and all were well worth it.

Took him to dinner at Sirocco Restaurant at the Renaissance Esmeralda, next door to Grand Champions) on his birthday and again we lucked out with a price fixed $35 tasting menu that was superb from appetizers to desserts with a glass of wine each thrown in plus yummy desserts.

I had proscuitto and melon, we both had pastas, risotto, Mahi Mahi) and an amazing creamy dessert with fresh fruit .We splurged on a big uttery bottle of Rombauer Chard which made a perfect accompaniment. Also sat on the fireplace warmed patio prior to dinner where he enjoyed a perfect martini an me a so so glass of wine. The pre-dinner drinks and dinner set me back about $200 but he’s worth it.

And what’s more we stopped at Morongo Casino Resort & Spa on the way back to LA where I’m a slot machine member and I actually won. The casino gives you credit for play and I had enough for the lunch buffet, which is quite an amazing spread for $11 per person. We rode home happy.

The Tantric massage will make you feel as if you are in a trance, where physical boundaries dissolve, time disappears, worries and problems no longer seem important, or are forgotten altogether. I will begin by having you recline on your back with pillows under your head and a towel covered pillow supporting your hips. Your legs will be slightly apart, your knees just a little bent. Your abdomen, thighs, feet, toes, chest, nipples and fingers are then gently massaged with warm aromatic oil. Nothing will escape attention. Your energy flow is stimulated and senses awakened as your body’s sensitivity increases. According to Tantric ideals, your entire body will be massaged, including those particularly sensitive areas, It can also be called a “Yoni” massage. Perceptions of sensuality and lust are located here, but this “intimate” area are an important source of joy in life. You will feel relaxed, yet wide awake. You will be coached to breathe properly, as you sink into yet deeper level of relaxation. In this very loving ceremony you will be completely nurtured and pampered in my arms, giving you a feeling of comfort and sense of well-being.

THAILAND RECAP If you ever visit Thailand, you must go to Phuket and Bangkok. Why? Well, even though

THAILAND RECAP
If you ever visit Thailand, you must go to Phuket and Bangkok. Why? Well, even though they’re in the same small country, they couldn’t be more different. Phuket is a beautiful beach paradise aimed at pleasing tourists while Bangkok is a bustling city of non-stop traffic and on-the-go people. Think of visiting America and making two stops: New York City and Newport Beach, California. Two very different experiences. They couldn’t be more different, which is why you should visit both places while vacationing in Thailand. I stayed in Phuket for three nights, four days; Bangkok for five nights, six days. And instead of making this long and tedious for the eye, I’ll be quick and have the pictures do the talking!

PHUKET: THE TOP 8

1. Always Hire a Driver Prior to Arrival
It is often cheaper to hire a driver and tour guide rather than booking through a tour company or figuring things out when you arrive. Drivers will pick you up from the airport, take you around on all-day trips, and anything else you wish to do. We found our driver through internet suggestions, and it was excellent. It was also the company with the biggest bang for your buck (aka cheapest). Our driver’s name was Mai. Typically, airport transfer is around $35 USD, and a full day tour of the island is around $100 USD. Here is the website to the company we used: http://www.cathyandgarystravelpages.com/hiring_a_driver.htm

2. J.W. Marriott Resort & Spa
www.jwmarriottphuket.com
We stayed at the J.W. Marriott Resort, tucked away in a remote part of the island 45 minutes away from most of the tourist areas. The resort’s vast expanse of property was filled with tropical greenery and architecture, three pools with a remarkable view, and what seemed like an endless beach property. Rooms are quite expensive (around $300 USD/night and up), but depending on high or low season, you may be able to find good deals on travel websites.

3. Visit the Phi Phi Islands
You MUST visit the Phi Phi Islands (pronounced: Pi Pi Islands) — it is too beautiful to ignore while you are visiting Phuket. It’s actually a clump of small islands (all equal in beauty) and it’s located 45 minutes by speedboat from Phuket. Many tour companies have full day, two day, and three day tours of the islands.I would recommend a two day tour because there is too much to see in one day.

Anda Varee (they do not have a website). I would not recommend booking through them because they pack their speed boats like sardines – we were in a medium size speed boat with around 40 people. There are many companies that have smaller boats with far less people.

Boat worker with Anda Varee

Koh Phi Phi Island

4. Cheraim Spa Village
http://www.cheraimspavillage.com/
For around $80 USD, we got a two hour aroma massage and foot massage. This spa is extremely beautiful with Thai styled massage rooms and pavilions. What a deal! You cannot find this anywhere in the US – especially for nice spas.

5. Elephant Trekking
Yes, it’s very touristy, but an elephant ride is something that you’ll have to do once while in Thailand. For around $35 USD, you can ride an elephant for one hour at one of the many elephant trekking companies. Just ask your driver or concierge, and you’ll be able to find it in no time. However, it’s something that you’ll only need to do once in a lifetime. It’s fun, but you basically sit on an elephant and that’s about it.

6. Don’t buy souvenirs in Phuket (wait until Bangkok)
Bangkok is much cheaper than Phuket in terms of handmade Thai goods and souvenirs. And above all – everything you see in Phuket can be found in Bangkok for a fraction of the price. So if you want to save money, buy things in Bangkok.

7. Patong Beach, Karon Beach, and Kata Beach
These three beaches are equal in beauty – and many tourists lounge around these beaches. If you’re staying at a hotel without beachfront property, head over to these three beaches. You can always ask your tour guide/driver to take you there!

8. Massages along the beach
Many beaches will have wooden huts/villas with women giving Thai massages (full-body massage). The prices vary from $5 USD to $15 USD per hour. I highly recommend getting one – what’s more relaxing than getting a massage while listening to the waves crashing? You can easily find these places – they’re everywhere! However, don’t expect to get a massage of “spa quality.” It’s good, but not great.

By Heather My husband and I were recently talking about our 10 year wedding anniversary which is com

By Heather

My husband and I were recently talking about our 10 year wedding anniversary which is coming up this Friday, September 11th. I asked him to name his favorite moment of the wedding. He quickly answered “The shot table and the reception…”

(insert eyebrow lift from me)

“And of course saying I do,” he added.

(insert smile from me)

We’ve been together for 13 years. Most of the time it feels like we just met… other times it feels like a hundred years. Occasionally, we want to whack each other on the head with a frying pan. Thankfully, we’ve never actually done this.

We had a “frying pan” moment over the weekend thanks to a massage. It was just 50 minutes, but it felt like an excruciating 24 hours and a HUGE waste of our money. Money that I want to demand back, but I’m afraid it might get someone fired. So I probably won’t.

We were out-of-town and decided to treat ourselves with massages. The plan was simple. We would take turns at the spa while the other one watched the kids. I would go to the first appointment which was at 8 am. He would go at 9. They were 50 minutes each. I asked to leave a few minutes early, so he could make it to his treatment on time.

Best laid plans. Right?

I rolled out of bed and got to my appointment 15 to 20 minutes before my session. I told the therapist I needed to leave early. He said “fine.” Then he kept talking.

I’d like to point out that I LOVE massages. I’ll let almost anyone give me a massage as long as they knead me like a loaf of honey wheat bread. Nothing can deter me from getting a massage. (not even a life threatening MRSA staph infection which I got from a spa in Vegas)

I’ve paid a lot of money over the years for spa treatments and I’ve had my fair share of “AWESOME” and “FRIGHTENING.” But this is the first a massage has caused me to point my finger and yell at my husband in a hotel hallway. (Not my finest moment)

Consider some of my more disturbing massage moments. There was the massage student who rubbed my abs and asked me to call him sometime. Ewww. The nice Italian woman who rubbed my boobs with olive oil. Ickkk. A man in Greece who grabbed my ankles, pulled them over my head to my ears while straddling me. Wowza! Thank goodness I was wearing underwear. Or how about the therapist who ran out of the room only to return and announce that she had diarrhea. Ughh. None of this has EVER made me scream at one of the people I love most on earth.

I can handle too much oil, horrible music, chanting and a little weirdness. But I CANNOT handle a chatty Kathy who talks and talks and talks when I’m trying to relax.

This was unfortunately the case. The therapist told me about his daughter’s surgery, his life as a single parent, the three months he spent trying to pass a kidney stone and Amber, the therapist, who had a crush on the hotel’s personal trainer. Then he delved into my parent’s divorce, my arthritis, how often I pick up my kids, etc. He talked so much he forgot to massage half of my body. He got my back and left arm. The rest was left high and dry. Then the wind-bag ran past our time. That made my husband late for his massage.

He was mad, I yelled it wasn’t my fault in a crazy person way. Then we spent the three hour drive home in silence. (or as much as you can with two kids) Relaxation ruined.

Later when we got home he walked by, gave me a little pat and said I love you. The frying pan moment was over. 10 years of wedded bliss restored!

This takes me back to our conversation about our wedding day. I told him that although I did enjoy the “shot bar” at the reception my favorite moment was feeling so calm and certain about marrying him.

“I never had a doubt.”

Then without blinking he actually asked if I would book massages when we celebrate our anniversary later this week.

“Really?”

Now that’s love.
