Currently NEWS member Masuda is playing the lead actor in the theater production ‘雨の日の森の中 / Ame no Hi no Mori no Naka [lit. 'In the Forest on a Rainy Day']‘. Fellow members have been going to see him in between their activities. Recently Koyama and Tegoshi paid a visit.

Koyama “Massu’s [Masuda's] theater proceeded at a really good pace. Before I knew it, it was all over! I laughed out loud during the whole play!! The director Nishida-san said he wrote the script specifically with Massu in mind; the story perfectly matched Massu’s personality!
Afterwards we went backstage to have a chat with Massu. Tegoshi and I bombarded him with praises.
‘It was really fun★ It must have been tough to move around like that. You looked great when you were acting scared!”
Then Massu replied ‘I’m glad you felt that way…on the other hand…’
‘What? What happened?’
‘On the other hand, when Shige [Kato Shigeaki] came to see the play, the first thing he said backstage was “Massu, I bet you aren’t all that tired.” …I nearly punched him then and there!!! (laugh)’
It’s amazing how Shige could have said that to Massu who was probably drenched in sweat from the hard work. Then again that’s typical of Shige! (laugh)”

Each member seems to have had different impressions about Masuda’s performance. A certain member even had some surprisingly harsh words for him! Fans that went to the theater might have seen a different side of Masuda by watching him act onstage.

I adore Ikuta Toma, and in many Youtube clips of him he’s with this mysterious boy named Yamapi. Naturally, I got curious and looked this guy up because he seemed a lot more popular than Toma. Turns out that he’s a leader of a group called NEWS.

6. What was your first impression of NEWS?
“Gross, an all boys singing group with too many members.”

7. How did you come to like NEWS?
After listening to Tegoshi’s solo during the bridge of “Bambina.” And then reading the translation of those lines.

8. What do you think is NEWS strongest point when compared to other JE/music/talent groups?
Their lovely songs. ^o^ Or maybe their concerts. Or their member-ai. Or that they’re all beautiful.

9. What do you think is NEWS weakest point when compared to other JE/music/talent groups?
Their under-budgeted PVs. Johnny-san, give them more money, dammit! Seriously, the “Happy Birthday” PV? A little more fanservice would also be much appreciated. They haven’t reached Arashi’s level yet. (Then again, I doubt anyone could ever reach Arashi’s level. xD)

10. Are you listening to them right now?
Well, not NEWS exactly, but it’s “Kibou no Hikari wo Kokoro ni Tomosou,” a Tegomass song. Can that count?

For some reason, I’d love to hear them sing YUI’s “Love and Truth.” xP But if that’s too absurd to consider, Gackt’s “Last Song” would be nice, too. Or anything by Arashi. An Arashi song would make me giggle. I think GReeeeN songs would suit their voices best. BUT A TEGOMASS SONG WOULD BE EPIC.

Oh, err… I guess “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” by Green Day. That’s the only song I can think of at the moment where the boys vocals wouldn’t sound too out of place. Except, maybe, poor Massu.

All six members. But if Tegoshi is singing in the smaller group, I might prefer that.

I think just “Ai Nante.” T–T Yes, I know, what kind of fan am I? I had to sing it over and over and OVER again when I was recording myself, so I’d be worried if I can’t remember it.

If I haven’t made it painfully obvious, Tegoshi is my number one. ^-^

Oh, goodness, you’re making me CHOOSE?? I don’t have a least favorite. If I absolutely HAD to choose (as in, held at gunpoint), I’d pick Yamapi. HOWEVER, only because he’s faaaaaarrrr too sexy for me to handle. I can’t deal with overly-sexy men. -can’tgetoverthefactthatheposednudeinamagazineandwithagirlnoless- If you include former-NEWS members, I’d choose Uchi because I don’t know him that well.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. NEWS would not be NEWS without all six current members.

KoyaShige. Yessssss. Or TegoShige. Or Shige x NEWS. And DEFINITELY Tego x NEWS.

24. Who has the best fashion sense?
Are you asking me this? I, who fail at everything fashion-related? But I think Tegoshi’s looking nice lately. -totallyisnotbiased- Yamapi and Ryo have that gorgeous-without-trying look.

25. Who normally has the best hairstyles?
This is definitely my bias speaking again, but for me it’s Tegoshi. I love all of his hairstyles, even his loose perm that even hardcore Tego fans seem to loathe. Well… maybe not so much that one time around Tegomass’s “Ai Ai Gasa” release where his hair was that icky shade of blond. I take that back, it looks nice in certain lights. My favorite so far is when his hair was dark brown and styled the way it was in winter 2008, in this video. He looks so boyish and cuteee~ (This is one of my favorite live performances by them. The video quality is stunning, and so are the boys. I keep replaying Tegoshi’s dancing from 0:45-0:53.)

26. Who’s singing voice is your favorite?
I shall question the intelligence of anyone who can’t guess my answer to this. Of course I choose Tegoshi’s.

Either Tegoshi’s high, clear voice or Ryo’s rough, husky voice.

Probably this one, because in the other pictures from this shoot, the boys get to experiment with poles and bondage. And they’re WET. DD

I think Koyama is the only one with that inner cosplayer urge. I would also say Massu, but he dresses up every day. Tegoshi would make a nice schoolgirl.

Yamapi. True, he’s gorgeous, but there’s something about his face that doesn’t particularly scream, “LOOK AT ME.” I mean, of course I would notice him, “notice” as in, Ohh, who’s that fine-looking man? But it wouldn’t register in my mind that it’s the legendary Yamapi of NEWS.

44. Who do you think has pulled the most all-nighters?
Definitely Shige, for studying. He trips over his own feet all the time because he’ s too tired to care.

Koyama. I can only imagine him trying to convert that member-ai into office-ai.

Yamapi: He’d had tons before; doesn’t affect me.

I fell asleep after I got home from school yesterday. It was Friday, so I thought it would be nice to sleep a little longer than usual. That took such a long time to do! Well, at least it was fun. Maybe I’ll do it again someday when I don’t feel like doing homework. Probably with the “weeeek” PV. There’s tons of happenings  in that.

NEWS is definitely dominating my thoughts lately. This is exactly why I wanted to avoid the world of Japanese entertainment. It’s terribly addicting.

Whenever I get really tired, I have no control over what I write. So when I was taking History notes during the day I pulled that all-nighter, I found myself writing the line, “I love NEWS” in my notebook instead of what the teacher was saying. And two days ago, on Thursday, I was watching a film during French class. A pig popped up on screen, and immediately I thought, “MASSU!”

No school Monday so I’m goofing off as much as I want!

“Si señoras y señores, en este largo fin de semana del cumpleaños de la patria, un chileno ilustre, un chileno que representa enteramente la raza de este pueblo, lo ha dejado todo en la cancha, nos emociona como siempre (…) porque el Nico lo hizo de nuevo, porque una vez más nos da una alegría enorme y nos hace gritar ¡viva chile mierda!”      (Relato de Fernando Solabarrieta)

Así es, el encendido de esta semana es Nicolás Massú, quien sacó una vez más la cara por nuestro país y sencillamente nos tapó a boca a todos. El irregular juego que había mostrado durante este año (seis eliminaciones en primera ronda de torneos ATP), lo tenía  en el ojo de la crítica y era constantemente cuestionado por la prensa deportiva. Frente a esto, Nicolás se había mostrado muy molesto y, de forma indirecta, terminó siendo su motivación para vestirse de héroe.

A pesar de los miedos de la organización y de la poca esperanza puesta en el equipo nacional, el público respondió de grata forma y llegó en gran número al coliseo rancagüino; variable muchas veces decisiva cuando los jugadores necesitan de ese apoyo para ganar confianza. Cuando la tarea parecía casi cumplida y llegábamos al sábado con un dos a cero en el marcador general, surgió lo que a mi juicio considero una mala jugada por parte Gildemeister.

Hacer jugar a Nico y Paul un dobles que estaba prácticamente perdido -tomando en cuenta la experiencia de la pareja austriaca- y que se extendió por más de dos horas, sólo favorecía al equipo rival y nos pudo haber costado muy caro. Así llegó el domingo y Paul perdía con Jurgen Mezler, frente al cual mostró un juego bastante irregular y sin duda alguna, el físico le pasó la cuenta. Sin embargo, Massú, cual Maximus a la espera de su enfrentamiento con los tigres en el coliseo, se preparaba para su encuentro con Koubek.

En un partido épico, de más de  cinco horas y tras haber jugado otras cuatro en los días anteriores, el juego de Nicolás se basaba en una mezcla de dos elementos fundamentales. Primero, la garra que siempre lo ha caracterizado, esa con la que ha dado vuelta partidos imposibles y que le permitió llegar a estar dentro de los diez mejores jugadores del orbe. Mientras que en segundo lugar están las ansias de vencer el fantasma de la inseguridad que reaparece en ciertas ocasiones y, a la vez, sepultar las críticas que tanto lo afectaron.

Si bien el triunfo ante Austria no significó ganar  un título, sino, por el contrario, nos salvó del descenso y nos permite mantenernos en del Grupo Mundial, la actuación del equipo chileno debemos considerarla igualmente como una hazaña. Digo esto, considerando que tanto Capdeville como Massú no estaban pasando precisamente por su mejor momento tenístico. Además, lograron que la sensible pérdida de Fernando González, nuestro mejor jugador, no fuese tan complicada como se pensó.

Creo que está de más preguntarse por qué la película favorita de Massú es “Gladiador”, y no sería descabellado pensar que dicha historia pudo fácilmente haberse inspirado en un guerrero con las hazañas, garra, la fuerza y los cojones de Nicolás. Si ya había puesto en lo alto el nombre de Chile todas las veces que nos representó en la Copa Davis y cuando ganó el bicampeonato de la Copa Mundial por Equipos de Düsseldorf, la obtención de las dos medallas de oro en los Juegos Olímpicos de Atenas no hicieron más que grabar su nombre con letras doradas en la historia deportiva del país.

A muchos se les olvida todo lo que este jugador ha hecho por el tenis nacional y durante el último tiempo, se le ha faltado mucho el respeto. Ojalá tuviéramos también en otros deportes hombres como Nicolás Massú, que soportó más de nueve horas en cancha este fin de semana y en ningún momento se rindió. No es complejo pensar en lo difícil  que debe ser para un jugador, verse en el casillero 96, después de haber estado top ten; no obstante,  todos sabemos cómo se transforma y de lo que es capaz cuando usa la camiseta de Chile.

Ese es el Nicolás que todos queremos ver, el que a pesar de estar consciente de que no le tenían fe, jugó a morir y jamás bajó los brazos. Así te queremos ver vampiro, luchando como un gladiador y gritando muchas veces más “nada es imposible hueón”.

Gyoza.

One word was all it took to get his attention.  He would stop whatever he was doing, no matter what it was, if you muttered the magic word.  The sound of the word on his ears made him swear he could taste the gyoza already in his mouth the moment he heard the first syllable.

The rest of the members never really understand his obsession.  Sure, Keii-chan had an unhealthy relationship with ramen and would sometimes be caught by the other members downing it on tour at 4 am in a fit of nerves, and don’t even mention Shige and curry rice.  They all had their own culinary vices, but none even came close to the way that Massu regarded gyoza. 

If there was a Church of Gyoza, he would have been worshipping there every day, no, he would be the head of that church.  One time, he had even mentioned forming it when he was drunk out of his mind on extra-strong liquor one of Jin’s friends had brought back from Korea.  Pi had convinced to Jin to let Massu come to the party (after all who could resist his cute pleading and smiling)?  After downing seven shots of the mysterious neon green liquid and puking on Jin’s favorite pair of skinny jeans and then nearly falling off the balcony, he wasn’t invited to Jin’s parties again.

One random time in Kabukicho, he found himself literally risking his life for gyoza.  The man brandishing a sharp stiletto knife had poked his hard belly threateningly, demanding his money.  Massu’s child-like face had crumpled and he acquiesced, but insisted on keeping 550 yen for the gyoza that he was on his way to get at an izakaya (they were famous despite being in a shady back-alley).  The assailant was stunned but let him keep the small amount, running off with the rest of the money in his wallet and his expensive cell phone.  Despite the fact that he had just been mugged, the pungent smell of the gyoza and the lovely warm sensation of the meat dumplings sliding down his throat made everything all better.

Gyoza had even wrecked havoc on his (albeit few) romantic relationships.  Massu didn’t understand that not everyone found the little pieces of heaven so enthralling.  Tegoshi had been nice and hooked him up with an adorable classmate, a sweet girl who was an education major and wanted to be a kindergarten teacher.  Tesshi was sure Massu wouldn’t screw this one up.

But he did, via letting the conversation drift towards their favorite foods.  She smiled and waxed poetic about Korean food, and politely asked what his favorite food was.  Massu took a breath and then began talking about gyoza with stars in his eyes.  After five minutes of hearing about where the best gyoza were in Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe and a small village in Nagano-ken, his date’s eyes were the size of dinner plates.  She was aghast and a bit frightened by his passion for the food.

Oblivious, Massu rambled on and on.  After ten more minutes (fifteen minutes total so far) of describing the subtle nuances of the grinding of the meat in gyoza fillings and the differences of salt levels in brands of dipping sauce, she excused herself to the restroom.

He was utterly flabbergasted when she never came back.

“I don’t get it Tegoshi! We talked about movies and food….” he whined to his bandmate.  Sighing, Tegoshi shrugged but then a light bulb appeared above his head figuratively (although Ryo would swear that sometimes it would really appear like symbols appear above Sims characters since it was a rare event Tegoshi thought about anything but hair products and perfumes). 

“Did gyoza enter the conversation?” he asked apprehensively.

Massu nodded, his eyebrow raising in a questioning manner. 

“UGH!” Tegoshi squealed, turning as his hands flew up in exasperation.

“HEHEHEHE” Ryo laughed nearly falling off the couch as he put two and two together and figured out that not once (the last time involved a friend of Yamapi’s that ran away due to his insistence on visiting four gyoza places in one night), but TWICE, Massu’s gyoza love had caused him problems in the love department.

“HEY MASSU, IF YOU LOVE GYOZA SO MUCH WHY DON’T YOU MARRY IT?” he chortled, face scrunching up as he laughed so hard his sides began to ache. 

“Shut the hell up!” Massu retorted, pouting. 

“Although I would if I could….” he murmured wistfully.

Nonostante non sia possibile dare conto analiticamente di tutti I contributi degli autorevoli relatori,e’ tuttavia possibile -seppure sinteticamente-formulare alcune considerazioni di indubbia rilevanza in relazione alla guerra di Algeria.
In primo luogo,l’iniziale assenza da parte francese di una spirito interarma fu superata a partire dal 1959 grazie alla leadership di Bigeard -che fu in grado di amalgamare le unita’ francesi- e grazie al Col.Ruyssen con la realizzazione del CROGG la prima struttura integrata di intelligence che permise al potere militare francese di superare la rivalita’ tra la DST diretta da Pontal e del SDCE coordinata da Germain,struttura interarma I cui benefci furono tuttavia ben presto vanificati con la proliferazione di strumenti di intelligence quali la SAS del Gen.Parlange,il BEL e il COBR.In secondo luogo,benche’ inizialmente la reazione francese alle nuove modalita’ di guerra sovversiva si fosse rivelata lenta e tardiva-come sottolineato nel 1955 dal console brittanico Irving-ben presto il potere militare fu in grado di reagire-come indicato dall’ambasciatore brittanico Jebb- attraverso il Centro di istruzione di controguerriglia e di sovversione di Arzew nel 1957,il “quadrillage”di Trinquier e la collaborazione tra la gendarmeria e l’esercito e tra il SDCE e la Marina.Indubbiamente uno degli strumenti per eccellenza di contrasto attuati dalla Francia fu la guerra psicologica il cui artefice fu certo Larechoy ma che ebbe modo di prendere forma nel contesto delle forze armate francesi grazie a Bigeard,Godard attraverso il CHTP del Gen.Ely,attraverso il CIGP e naturalmente grazie al 5°Bureau.Se indubbiamente -da parte dell’ALN- fu compiuto un tentativo analogo di guerra psicologica e di disinformazione presso i soldati francesi-i sottoufficiali in particolare-ai quali la Francia fu presentata come la principale responsabile del terrorismo, e’ tuttavia altrettanto indubbio che in Francia l’opposizine alla guerra si manifesto’ attraverso la disubbidienza alla leva che fu certo di notevole rilevanza ed ebbe modo di prendere forma attraverso Alban Liecthi-la cui azione fu ampiamente pubblicizzata dalla CGT-,Noel Favreliere,Jean Le Meur e soprattutto Jeanson ma soprattutto attraverso periodici -quali L’Humanite’ ,Le temps des rappeles e Esprit-che esercitarono un impatto ampio e duraturo presso gli intellettuali francesi laici e cattolici.Infine,fra le molte conclusioni alle quali il saggio perviene due ci sembrano quelle di particolare rilievo:in primo luogo la battaglia di Algeri rappresentera’ un punto di riferimento fondamentale per la guerra rivoluzionaria e la guerra psicologica e in secondo luogo la delega politica al potere militare-ed in particolare a Massu e Salan-portera’ ad un ribaltamento dei ruoli tra magistratura e potere militare attribuendo a quest’ultimo un ruolo determinante in tutte le scelte politiche di rilievo.

Nella prima parte del volume autobiografico Bigeard ripercorre le principali tappe della battaglia di Algeri che lo vide protagonista al pari di Massu,Godard e Salan.Se il taglio interpretativo e’ certamente realistico e nazionalistico insieme ,l’autore non puo’ fare a meno di ricordare come la lotta contro l’FNL fosse letta come una lotta per l’integrita’ nazionale francese e nel contempo come una lotta per il conseguimento della liberta’ di fronte alla avanzata minacciosa del comunismo.Proprio partendo da questi assunti politici,fu svolta una accurata formazione ideologica dei militari del 3°RPC trasformadoli in breve tempo in una formazione di elite. Sotto il profilo strategico certamente preziose risultano le riflessioni dell’A.sia in relazione all’uso innovativo dell’elicottero-trasformato da Bigeard da semplice strumento logistico a strumento formidabile di ricognizione e repressione-sia in relazione alle profonde trasformazioni strategiche che la guerra sovversiva implica a cominciare dalla necessita’ di attuare un approccio anche politico e psicologico oltre che strettamente militare. L’analisi della struttura bicefala dell’FNL-politica e militare-consentira’ a Bigeard di comprendere lucidamente come la struttura verticale e orizzontale dell’FNL avesse permesso una capillare infiltrazione dei sovversivi all’interno della societa’ algerina garantendo ad essa ampio sostegno finanziario. Un altro aspetto di rilievo indicato dall’autore e’ certamente il ruolo decisivo di Saadi -sul piano militare-con l’introduzione delle bombe artigianali che contribuirono ad aumentare la pressione psicologica presso i pied noir e quello altrettanto decisivo di Ben M’Hidi sul piano politico nei cui confronti Bigeard non nascose mai il suo rispetto che fu d’altronde esplicitamente contraccambiato.Nella seconda parte -non senza una punta di autocompiacimento-l’ A. dopo aver fatto cenno ai suoi successi militari(che lo porteranno a diventare nel 1971 Generale di Divisione delle Forze francesi nell’Oceano indiano e presidente della Commissione difesa sotto Giscard d’Estaing di cui divenne amico) lamenta la progressiva caduta del prestigio internazionale della Francia determinato da una politica incerta e incoerente,da stanziamenti risibili rispetto al passato,da forze professionali che non comprendono che la scelta di indossare la divisa costituisce una vocazione e non dunque una ordinaria professione.Certo la progressiva politicizzazione delle forze di polizia rischia di intaccare l’integrita’ delle forze armate francesi che -nonostante siano prive di missili da crociera e non ricevono la dovuta attenzione da parte della classe politica- contribuiscono-grazie alla intelligence della DST e del DRM-a dare un contributo di rilievo nella lotta al terrorismo sia in Medioeriente che in Africa.
