To recap over the past few months we have been talking about how to assemble a Peer Advisory Board.  We discussed choosing the members, commitment, the importance of a pre-set agenda, and discussion protocol.  This post will discuss the different roles that are important to your board.

Every board is started by someone.  This person took the initiative to put the group together.  Although, possible for the individual to continue to take responsibility for the group, it isn’t beneficial to the leader or the group.

The board benefits all participants, therefore all participants should take responsibility for some part of the work.

When one person is doing all the work, they can start to feel underappreciated.  The group may become less committed or interested in it’s success, not to mention the load of the responsibilites are much easier to bear when everyone helps.

Below is a breakdown of the roles we have found work.

Facilitator:

      1.  Facilitate the meeting

                   A. Meeting Opener

                   B. Keep conversation on track

                  C. Keep all members participating

                  D. Make sure all members have the opportunity to present

                  E. Talk to members who resist presenting or causing disturbances

                  F. Create comfortable environment for all

                                    a. Member attitude

                                    b. Member participation

2.  Meeting location

3. Meeting Schedule

4. Check in with Presenter

5.  Prepare meeting agenda

6.  Bring Charter and signed confidentialty agreements to the meetings

Facilitator Elect:  takes on the role of facilitator at the meeting when the current facilitator is presenting.

Presenter: (All members)Prior to the meeting: Prepare their topic to discuss with the group. Meet with their buddy/coach, by phone or in person.

Buddy/Coach: (All Members) Meet with presenter before meeting.  The role of the buddy is NOT to offer any advice to the presenter during the preparation meeting.  Help them prepare for the discussion and clarify their issue.

Time Keeper:  Give warnings as time elapses and notices when time is up.  Keep meeting running on schedule.

Discussion Protocol Observer: Give notice and assistance when the discussion protocol is violated.

Secretary:  Take notes on any changes to the schedule, charter, agenda, location, etc…  Please note, confidential conversation should not be documented, published or distributed due to risk of confidentiality breach.

Treasurer:  Collect monies from the group.  Money may be collected for expenses, dues, charter breaches, ect…

The presenter and coach are ongoing roles for all members.  The other roles should be assigned term limits and rotated evenly.

No one can master all of the issues demanding attention from a business owner today. There are just too many issues and they change too fast for one person to stay current:   marketing, employment issues, IT issues, changes in competition, and sales, just to name a few.

I just returned from an amazing marketing event in Las Vegas, Nevada.

There were experts there from every aspect of online marketing and it was a terrific opportunity to mastermind with other top producers and to share marketing strategies.

To top it off we partied together, wined and dined together and simply just hung out…

If you are doing any form of network marketing I must tell you that going to these types of events is not optional! It is an absolute MUST! There is nothing like standing in front of one of your favorite experts in a chosen area and talking with them face to face! This is where Top Producers are MADE!!

The marketing event itself was packed with value and everyone came away exhilarated and prepared to take their business to the next level.

After an exciting final round against David Edwards, Pat Gibson came home the winner of Are You An Egghead? series two. It’s yet another feather in Gibson’s cap – over the last five years he’s won just about everything going, and holds the unique treble of having been a Mastermind champ, Brain of Britain AND million-pound winner on WWTBAM. It was an exciting final too – although Gibson won all five subject rounds to give him a 5-0 lead going into the final general knowledge round, Edwards managed to pull back several points before Gibson made it across the line with 10 points to Edwards’ 7. Once again, Are You An Egghead? has proven far more entertaining than the parent show. Will it encourage me to watch Eggheads itself more? No, of course not.

I’m back home and more or less recovered. I think!

The problem with people like me is we got more ideas than time and our bodies aren’t always keeping up.

When I was kid people wondered why I pushed myself so hard. No one else was going to do the work for me. Everything I have, I earned the hard way. Blood sweat, and tossing caution to the wind or leaping before making sure something would catch me. I’m not dead yet but that could be the evil mastermind posing as a superhero by day.

Wait. What do they call those? Villains. Shh. Please keep this under wraps. I’ve got a façade to keep up.

I did more edits on NIGHT REINS. I love rewrites. I love the story so much I enjoy going in and cleaning things out. I cleaned up the synopsis of LIFE REINS got my super critique partner to look over it. Edited, she relooked at the work, I did more edits. See, I wasn’t joking about loving the rewrites. I went over some AEQUITAS II PUNISHMENT.

Over the coming posts, I’ll be adding in some interviews in the mix not to bore you with my mad ramblings.

Work out, in your head, the day of the week corresponding to any date — eg. today is 2009-11-22, a Sunday — using this method. (Wikipedia page, but I recommend the first link). If you stick to just years from 1900 onwards it’s very simple. Could be a geeky ice-breaker at parties to tell people what day they were born on.

I’m fairly certain I remember a TV one-off in the 1980s where some unfortunate autistic man was subjected to a “Mastermind“-style interrogation. The only thing this poor man could do was tell the day of the week for any date. Probably he’d stumbled upon this method …

“Laris Bu..?”, kataku ketika melihat es cendol yang terlihat habis tuntas tas di depanku

“Iya pak, sudah tiga kali balik ke rumah untuk ngambil lagi, tetapi habis terus”, kata sang penjual es cendol yang kukenal sebagai salah satu aktifis kegiatan TDA Bekasi. Ada tulisan Kupat Tahu Bandung di kaos sang penjual dan akupun yakin pasti ada sentuhan pak Ato di kedai es cendol ini.

Kekecewaanku gagal minum es cendol ini akhirnya terobati oleh minuman teh rosela yang dijual di Warung Mas Gun, yang kukenal sebagai aktifis kelompok Mastermind Cikarang 1 [MMC1]. Teh ini terasa lain di lidah, tetapi setelah diminum rasa enaknya mulai terasa di tenggorokan.

Kucoba rasa soto ayam di warung mas Gun ini. Wah rasanya bener-bener makknyoss, lebih maknyus dari soto yang sering kumakan di wilayah Cikarang ini. Aku nggak sanggup lagi nyobain soto yang lain, karena satu soto ini saja sudah membuatku kelimpungan.

Mas Gun senyum-senyum saja melihat tingkahku yang seperti tiga tahun tidak ketemu makanan soto. Rupanya tingkahku ini membuat pembeli lain tertarik untuk membeli soto yang sama dengan yang kubeli.

“Ini enak mbak, yakin deh…”, kataku meyakinkan sang calon pembeli itu.

Aku langsung berdiri setelah selesai makan soto dan sang calon pembelipun akhirnya jadi beli dan duduk di kursi yang kududuki tadi.

Begitu gambaran beberapa stand TDA yang mengikuti acara Heritage of Percusion [HoP]. Akrab dan kualitas dijamin, sehingga para pembeli tidak ragu untuk menyantap apa saja yang dihidangkan oleh teman-teman TDA.

Bakmi Semar yang siang ini ditungguin oleh pak Wawan juga memperoleh pemasukan yang lumayan [berdasar info status Fisbuk dari mbak Win pemilik Warung Bakmi Semar yang juga nggota MMC1].

Sayang aku tidak sempat berjumpa dengan pak DD, ketua Kelompok Mastermind Poksa XI yang ikut membidani munculnya Bakmi Pelangi. Perutku yang sudah full penuh juga membuatku tidak berani mampir di Mie Pelangi. Takut ditawarin dan terpaksa mau [karena susah mencari orang yang sanggup menghindari tawaran makan Mie Perto kalau sudah pernah mengetahui rasanya].

Semua wisata kuliner ini baru bisa kunikmati setelah aku dipuaskan oleh penampilan beberapa pekerja seni yang mengisi acara HoP ini. Dari pagi menjelang siang, kita memang dipuaskan oleh suguhan berbagai macam atraksi, baik dari negara kita maupun dari negara tetangga [India, Korea, Jepang maupun China].

Acara resmi dimulai dengan penampilan dari Marching band [MB] SMA Cikarang Selatan. Sebuah penampilan yang sempurna. Ini wajar mengingat mereka memang sudah beberapa kali menggondol piala kejuaraan MB tingkat nasional.

Salut patut disampaikan kepada pelatih MB ini. Aransemen yang begitu rinci dan padu membuat semua orang merasa penting dalam memunculkan harmonisasi yang luar biasa.

Tidak hanya pemain musiknya, rombongan penaripun punya andil dalam membuat decak kagum penonton. Pasti koreografernya jempolan juga, sehingga mampu memadukan gerak dan lagu dalam paduan MB yang dinamis dan penuh semangat.

Namun jangan salah, karena ternyata lagu “Hening” dari Chrisyepun mereka lahap dengan aransemen yang lembut dan apik. Kegarangan MB sirna dalam lagu itu, yang muncul adalah suasana yang sendu merayu dan mengharu biru.

Penampilan yang tidak kalah seru adalah penampilan permainan angklung bersama. Dalam permainan ini semua penonton diberi sebuah angklung untuk dimainkan bersama-sama dengan mengikuti aba-aba dari instruktur yang ada di atas panggung.

Meski acara angklung ini sukses, namun kalau dirubah sedikit saja mungkin akan lebih sukses lagi, bahkan bisa lebih sukses dibanding acara MB yang begitu rancak dan mengundang decak kagum semua penonton. Lilo yang tidur saat acara belum dimulai terbangun ketika mendengar suara MB dan akhirnya bahkan ikut menari mengikuti irama MB spektakuler itu.

Masukan agar permainan angklung lebih memikat ada beberapa hal, yaitu :
1. Instruktur perlu lebih dekat dengan penonton yang notabene adalah pemain angklung “dadakan” yang harus mengikuti komando simbol-simbol gerakan tangan instruktur. Jauhnya instruktur ini membuat beberapa hadirin tidak bisa mengikuti kode tangan yang disampaikan oleh instruktur.
2. Rombongan anak muda yang dipersiapkan untuk menjadi pelopor permainan angklung ini terlihat kurang bergairah dan bingung dengan aturan yang diterapkan. Mereka tidak tahu dengan pasti harus menghadap kemana dan terlihat serba salah. Sampai-sampai sang instruktur sempat bertanya pada mereka, “Are U there?”. Sebaiknya anak muda ini berbaur saja dengan penonton, sehingga saling bersinergi dan bisa saling memberi semangat.
3. Biasanya setiap nada angklung mewakili sebuah kata yang bermakna, tapi dalam hal ini diwakili dengan not angka, jadi nilai-nilai kebersamaan yang ditunjukkan dalam permainan ini kurang menonjol. Hal ini mungkin karena ditakutkan penonton tidak segera “tune in” dengan permainan angklung, sehingga dibuat jalan mudahnya saja.

Pertunjukan lain masih banyak dan masih beragam, sehingga penonton tidak juga beranjak dari tempat duduknya menyaksikan parade acara yang selalu punya keunikan sendiri-sendiri.

Pak Bupati maupun para petinggi lainnya yang mungkin punya acara lain memang terlihat meninggalkan acara sebelum semua rangkaian acara berakhir, tapi bukan berarti kalau ditinggal pak Bupati acara terus langsung menurun kualitasnya.

Di penghujung acara masih tampil MB dari UI yang sudah punya pengalaman internasional. Hanya beberapa orang saja yang tampil di panggung, tapi permainan MB UI ini sudah cukup memukau penonton. Ketrampilan prima dan pengalaman yang sudah begitu banyak membuat MB UI ini terlihat santai dalam penampilan dan tetap berkarakter. Penonton tanpa undanganpun makin terlihat menyemut di sekitar lokasi acara.

Perut yang keronconganlah yang membuat aku akhirnya meninggalkan kursiku dan menuju ke lokasi teman-teman TDA menjajakan kepiawaiannya dalam berbisnis kuliner.

Yang kutuju pertama kali adalah es cendol dan ternyata tak ada setetespun es cendol yang bisa kuminum. Laris manis deh es cendol di stand KTB pak Ato.

Sukses buat acara HoP, semoga tahun depan diadakan lagi dengan mempergunakan EO yang lebih berpengalaman, sehingga gaungnya lebih jauh dan wisata kuliner yang diadakan bisa lebih ramai dikunjungi pengunjung, minimal mirip dengan kegiatan Komunitas Bangomania, dimana aku menjadi salah satu koordinatornya di wilayah Bekasi bagian Cikarang ini [walah malah narsis, sori ya Wak Radit].

The chap who equalled the all-time lowest score on Mastermind last week says it was all a prank, and that he wants to be “the black Jeremy Beadle”. You know, I’m fairly sure that a bad idea doesn’t magically become a good one just because you insert the word “black”. Anyway, from the Daily Maul’s headline you would get the impression that he planned it all as a joke, but applying a bit of critical interpretation to the story, it would appear that his claim is more along the lines of “I genuinely messed up the general knowledge, then threw a hissyfit, then decided to go for seven as I plainly wasn’t going to win anyway”. Which isn’t actually that exciting a story, and demonstrates why Paul Revoir, with his creative obfuscation, is getting paid for this and I’m not.

Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, the one who happily admitted to being the brains behind the September 11th attacks against America will be held on trial this week in New York City. Personally, I think he is guilty as charged with crimes against humanity (both internationally and domestically).

KSM had requested to be put on trial in New York City when he was caught by the Pakistani ISI, in 2003. The folks in the big white house have found it fit to honor this mans request – the trial will be held in New York City.

Since when is the United States in the business of honoring the requests of terrorists, especially ones who deliver highly lethal blows? The only logically conclusion I can draw to this ridiculous appeasement to KSM is we are showing the terrorist organizations who  preach Islam violently that the United States does in fact hold themselves true to the Constitution — what they despise.

By saying, “you are guilty, here is the death penalty,” we are in fact giving them more fodder to indoctrinate their soldiers with, and it would establish KSM as a martyr, this is the last thing we need right now. However, when we not only defend the Constitution, but also use it against them in an internationally accepted way, we are kicking ass. And, kick ass we do.

It is no mystery that the 9/11 attacks were supposed to break the American spirit and demonstrate how our Democratic system of government is flawed. Regardless if it did or not, the system will shine.

Putting KSM on trial is completely acceptable. It is a effective tool in seeking revenge by breaking the extremist spirit psychologically; however, honoring KSM’s request to have the trial in New York City is just bizarre, at best. With KSM’s stay in New York City, New Yorkers are put at major risk. Al-Qaeda is just itching to make an example on the United States. If the terrorists were to strike during this important time of judgment, they would ultimately win, just as they did on 9/11.

The constitution will be proving a point, and the risk of the terrorists proving one will obviously rise. The Obama Administrations choice to have him go to New York puts many people at risk. Some will say the towers began and fell in NYC, and so too should this man who tore them down — but, quite frankly, honoring the ‘masterminds’  request in what will ultimately prove to be his downfall may make him more of a martyr then we may think. This is not the first time that the Administration is succumbing to the terrible habit of giving in to dangerous peoples, organizations, or countries requests. This man will be seen to justice, and the mile he will walk.

Brian Gaberman is my biggest inspiration when it comes to a photographic approach to skateboarding.  I have a good friend Andy who recently went on an Element trip with him to Texas, and some of the things I heard him saying really stoked me out.  I heard Andy on the phone with a friend saying “He hates shooting fisheye, and really hates using flash and other artificial lighting set-ups, because it isn’t natural- it’s fake to him.“  I immediately turned around and asked him if he was talking about Gaberman, and he nodded.  Evidently Andy offered to smoke a blunt with Brian and his reply was “Dude, look at me- I’m old.  That’s high school shit.”  That one got me laughing pretty hard.
So put away your fisheye, your flashs, and all your other high-tech crap that costs as much as an automobile- and do it like one of the biggest legends in skateboard photography history, Brian Gaberman.

It took a while, but after reformatting my external hard drive from FAT to NTFS, I was able to download the 10 GB Virtual Machine from Dr. Baumstark and get started on this project. After a few false starts, I finally got the mobile emulator connected to the web service and have tested calls to all the methods by first getting the client id, then passing it, plus any necessary parameters to the methods in the Mastermind Service.

I decided to design my Mobile UI in a separate project using Visual Studio on my main Windows system. By using drag and drop from the toolbox, I designed the game board using a main panel, then sub panels for rows and buttons. Based on what is generated from the form designer, I will code the dynamically generated controls to be used in the actual Mobile client.

Next step will be making the mastermind game actually work with the UI!

I hardly like to mention something so trivial, but last night’s Mastermind celebrity special was jolly good fun. Congratulations to Lucy Porter on her record score of 35 points, and Mark Watson on his only marginally less impressive 33. Viewers who sat through the credits got to see a selection of out-takes at the end too, notably John Humphrys beginning to ask Mark Watson about the wrong subject before suddenly breaking off with “Oh! You’re not Lucy Porter!”, and Dave Spikey being asked how he knew so much about the Leeds and Liverpool canal.  Spikey’s response: “Because I bought a book this week!”
