One trick to getting a great deal is making a habit of dropping in on a regular basis and be patient. It’s simply the law of averages. If you’re really good you will get to become friends with the employees that you see frequently, and possibly get a heads up on when a new delivery is expected.

Unique to my area is a thrift store called Laurel House. The proceeds from this store provide support and assistance to individuals in the community living with mental health issues. Merchandise in this store moves fast, and it’s good source for large pieces of furniture in particular. People love to make  their tax deductible donations to Laurel House because they will come out to your house and pick up large pieces of furniture; and the employees are super-friendly.

The Salvation Army is a chain of thrift stores that I love to frequent. Purchases from the Salvation Army fund adult rehab centers; which provide housing, work, and therapy to those who have lost the ability to cope or provide for themselves. I purchased 2 Match pewter picture frames in perfect condition at my local Salvation Army for $20 each; they retail for $145 each! If you find a piece you really love, don’t pass it up. If it is a great bargain it may be gone by the time you make up your mind.

Goodwill Industries Inc. helps individuals improve their lives and reach their full potential through the power of work. This certified green business strives to be socially, financially, and environmentally responsible. There is nothing greener than re-using items that might have otherwise ended up in a landfill. Take the time to remove dust jackets from books while you are there; there are some beautiful hardcover finds!

Another local gem is the Greenwich Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop, which benefits the local hospital. There aren’t just great bargains here, but also daily specials on a variety of items. Sometimes thrift stores are flooded with the contents of entire homes and will offer items at an even greater savings.

Patronizing thrift stores is beneficial to your wallet, the environment, and your community at large. It’s more than just bargain shopping. It’s one of those actions that creates a ripple effect, man.

We had the most wonderful wedding weekend I could ever have imagined and I love reliving the day by looking at photos and watching our wedding video. I will have to share photos with you all soon … since it’s been two years and all …

I always wanted to follow the “traditional” anniversary gift list of gifting rules. Year 1 – paper. Does a card count? Year 2 – cotton. I’ll have to get creative. But, as you know I live for tradition so don’t let me fool you into thinking we don’t have a tradition each year.

I am lucky enough to have been passed down china from my grandmother and great grandmother, so needless to say this was not something we registered for. This did give us the opportunity to register for one of my most favorite things of all – Match Pewter. Oh, the patina is to die for and there is really nothing I love more than a good serving piece.

My husband-to-be gifted me a gorgeous platter as a wedding day gift and from that day forward we vowed to spend the rest of our lives together, and to continue our collection. We love to entertain with family & friends and these make a great, memorable addition to the party.

Year 1 – fork + spoon.

Year 2 – a gravy boat.

Welcome to spring! For those of us with seasonal allergies this can be the most miserable time of the year, but i’m making the effort to man-up and highlight some vases for the evil pollen bombs that are currently suffocating me. Flowers finish a room, that’s gospel. Finding the right vase can be a challenge, though.

Opaque vases make an arrangement look neater by concealing the stems. A Match Pewter pitcher does just that, and is as classic as a bouquet of roses. Pottery Barn mercury glass vases lend a bit of shine to your tabletop while saving you a lot of dough.

A vase with a small mouth is easy to work with because it creates a beautiful tight grouping of flowers without a lot of “arranging” work on your part. These colored glass vases from Belongings and Viva Terra are a great home accent with or without flowers.

Tall arrangements can bring attention to the height of a room, so don’t shy away from making a grand statement in a dining room, foyer, or even on a coffee table. This time of year you can probably just clip some Forsythia from your neighbor’s yard and be all set (Thanks Paul!).

Low arrangements can be clustered in multiples of varying heights, or kept modern and simple. Bud vases, votive holders, or teacups can be used to display clusters of delicate blossoms or larger single blooms. Use a small scale arrangement to brighten up a powder room or line up multiple arrangements to accentuate a shelf or fireplace mantle.

A tall cylindrical vase elegantly holds bouquets of tulips, roses, and more. Look for one that is about 10” high. Textured glass vases from Villeroy and Boch or Crate and Barrel glam it up. A hand-thrown ceramic vase from Kim Westad’s “pebbles” collection brings classic black to the table without feeling too formal.

Nothing beats a classic footed urn. If it’s good enough for Grandma’s ashes it’s good enough for the dinner table, right? Jamali Garden has a great selection, and Wisteria keeps it fresh with a glass version. It’s a great choice for a fuller flower like a hydrangea.

My favorite vase is one that can stand alone as a piece of art; one that looks good with or without flowers. The cut-diamond look of the modern jewel vase does exactly that. It’s perfectly versatile for a coffee table or shelf that may only get fresh flowers some of the time.

Flowers may finish a room but I feel like they’re about to finish me! In the words of Sun-tzu, “keep your friends close, and keep your enemies closer”. Bring it, Gardenias. I’m ready.

I get so irritated when I see Halloween candy out in August, but I’m going to be one of those people today because I know how fast all the best holiday decorations get sold out. BTW Mr. Dumpty, I would never sit that close to a flame!

West Elm olive wood egg cups

If you use egg cups exactly once a year you may want to DIY it with an awesome origami design. Instructions for a simpler version are here. Otherwise, my top pick is the olive wood egg cup from West Elm.

If your Easter feast is a formal affair, dress your table with mod-cool Lladro egg cups. I will forever be in love with hand-made Match pewter, which is also a great choice.

When I envision the quintessential Easter egg cup I think of hobnail milk glass. The one pictured is via Curio Cabinet Antiques, but you may be able to find them on e-bay or in an antique store if you’re lucky. Jadeite is another good vintage choice; the soft green tone is perfect for Easter.

Egg cups can also be used for displaying decorative eggs rather than serving them. Martha Stewart has some great ideas, including dyed egg shell candles and adorable dyed eggs in mini flower pots. When creating eggs for decorative purposes it can be helpful to work with blown eggs.

The last time I saw something this confusing I was in Japan looking at Santa Claus hanging on a crucifix. The rabbit menorah is not quite as disturbing.

And so, these ramblings bring me around to a MOST fantastic line of fine pewter tableware. With this, even the most disastrous of meals will be a delight to your guests. Match is such a unique line that reminds me of dining at a plantation home with large white columns and thoroughbreds in the yard. Such a strong presence to dress up any meal.
