I wanted to post some more of the “work” that Lucy has been doing lately. Last week I made a series of cards that had mittens on them. Each mitten is a different color. I showed her how to pick up two cards that were the same color. She flew through this and wasn’t super interested. I need to modify it to make it harder. She’s still not saying the colors as much as she is able to recognize them, so this activity was good to get her to talk about the colors of each mitten.

We quickly moved on to a spooning activity. She loved it! She sat at the table and did this task for about 30 minutes (which is unheard of for Lucy!)

Here’s how I set up her work space. This is a large bowl of rice with small wooden ladybugs in it. I showed her how to use the spoon to scoop up a lady bug and put it on the green plate.

She caught right on! Eventually she started to just scoop out all the rice onto the plate. Then we’d put it all back into the bowl and she would start again.

She’s really concentrating here!

Eventually we added some other objects to the rice bowl and she scooped those out as well.

This was a great task for Lucy as she worked on holding the spoon, scooping, pouring, and sorting through the objects. We’ve done more “spooning” since this first time and she enjoys it every time!

It is becoming more and more common for couples to get matching tattoos (known as couple’s tattoos). This practice has even become common among celebrities.

Is getting a tattoo the best way to express your love for another person? Perhaps it depends on how comfortable you are with such dramatic personal expression. Whether you want to send a loud message, or simply a subtle tribute, there are all kinds of love tattoos that might appeal to you.

Heart Love Tattoos

Heart tattoos are a great way to express your love for another person, and they have been a popular way to do so since the beginning of the 1900s. Early on, it was common to see men, particularly sailors, with a heart featuring the word “Mom” on a banner across the center. As soldiers left for World War II, many soldiers would stop by a tattoo parlous to get the name of their girlfriend tattooed in a heart on their arm or shoulder.

Today, there are a wide variety of heart love tattoos, and they are still a common form of expression when it comes to love for another. Some of the different kinds of heart tattoos include: the sacred heart, the locked heart, the broken heart, the pierced heart, the Celtic heart, and hearts with a name inside of them. For the best results when you are choosing your heart tattoo, make sure that you work with a tattoo artist whom you trust.

Couple’s Love Tattoos

Oftentimes, a couple will get matching tattoos in order to show their love for one another. These love tattoos frequently consist of song lyrics or children’s names. The danger with these love tattoos is that the couple might not last, while the tattoo is permanent.

Recently, it has been a common trend among celebrities to get couples tattoos. Britney Spears and Kevin Federline, for example, had a pair of matching dice tattooed onto their wrists after their wedding. Victoria and David Beckham have matching couples tattoos that read “I am my beloved’s, my beloved is mine” in Hebrew.

The Key To My Heart

Love tattoos are a great way to express your feelings for someone else. However, make sure that you are in a secure relationship before being too hasty. Otherwise, you might end up with a permanent reminder of your former love!

Jessica Freedman, MD: Interviewers often casually ask applicants during interviews, “So, where

Jessica Freedman, MD:

Interviewers often casually ask applicants during interviews, “So, where else did you apply?” or suggest, “If you are really interested in matching here, please be sure to let us know.” Other programs routinely call applicants who are within “matching range” to recruit them after they interview. Does this constitute persuasion or pressure?

[Applicants] often feel obligated to tell a program what it wants to hear by saying, “I loved your program and I will be ranking you really highly.” Or, applicants may feel pressured to tell a program that they will be ranking it #1, even if that’s a white lie. Sometimes applicants are so nervous about matching that institutions’ recruitment efforts may influence the way they rank programs.

how should applicants deal with these situations? If you receive a residency match “love letter,” take its sincerity and truthfulness with a grain of salt. You certainly will want to respond graciously, but do not say you are ranking the program first if that is not your intention. As for fielding questions or comments that may violate the MPA, I suggest being diplomatic and somewhat vague without confronting or offending your interviewer. For example, if the interviewer asks where else you are applying or interviewing, it is acceptable to answer, “I am applying to and interviewing at a variety of programs, mostly on the West Coast” or whatever situation applies to you. If pressured to express specific interest in a program, it is fair to say, “I am very interested in this program and have not yet decided on my final rank order, but I will be ranking your program highly.” As with the “love letter,” do not tell a program that you will be ranking it first if this is not true.

As a mother and a wife, life for me is all about routine. I run a home and work and with a family to

As a mother and a wife, life for me is all about routine. I run a home and work and with a family to raise as well, I have to be super ordered, disciplined and on top of who needs to be where, at all hours, to keep things ticking over. If I don’t send the right clothes with my kids for gym, or I forget to get the food ready for my husband’s dinner party, the world won’t end but it certainly becomes unpleasant for my family and I whilst I catch up. Disapproving looks from teachers contend with my husband’s irritation at his wife’s lack of foresight not creating the best impression right before promotion time. Neither of which adds to a contended and happy household. Sometimes though, this life can become more than a little restrictive.

Every now and then, even the hardiest of Alpha mummies gets sick to death of the never-ending demands created by homework and household management and longs for a little less routine. Many of us dream of a life of hedonistic freedom, punctuated only by leisurely lunches and glamorous parties. Very few of us have either the resources or the inclination to follow such an unordered existence and most of us know that even if we did, the glamour of it would eventually pale into boredom and we would again long for our mucky kids and imperfect partners to give our lives meaning beyond our own reflections.

This doesn’t stop us dreaming though. I think it is this desire for the best of both worlds that leads many to become adulterers. Having recently stepped into this arena myself, I feel like I have some empathy for those men who claim that they love their wives, but just needed a little bit more. This month on a night out “with the girls” (read as out with A) I really started to understand. I looked at my lovely husband content on the sofa with the elder of our children, tie unbuttoned and trousers creased after a day on the go and felt a wave of love and warmth – followed rapidly by a wave of irritation, when the only comment made about my hours effort to get ready was “you off out now love? Did you feed the cat?” Wife and mother I may be but when you devote your entire life to another human beings wellbeing and comfort, the occasional “you look nice” wouldn’t go amiss.

I am aware that it is probably shallow but women need to feel sexy to be sexy and if your partners main interest is the cat and a five-minute fumble at the end of the night is the height of your attention, eventually even the most devoted of us can feel frustrated and neglected. I think that is why it is so easy to separate myself off to my “other life”. I don’t want to live in it permanently and certainly don’t believe I love A or want to run off with him. I just see it as a form of role play. Interestingly enough, this month that has been reflected in our, ahem, activities. For the first time in years, having someone see me as a sexual, desirable woman has awakened a bit of a sexual revolution in me. What started last month with more time on myself and a renewed interest in my appearance, has progressed to fantasies that could make a working girl blush – all with me as the lead character. Nothing appears to be turning me on more than the thought of me turned on and I haven’t felt like that in years. Because A and I aren’t serious but I do feel comfortable with him, I have been allowed to start to explore that side of myself in far greater depth than previously known. This resulted in a happy afternoon at a well-known sex store, wandering and meandering through the toys and tricks, indulging every possible dirty thought as I went.

I came out with these amazing handcuffs that you strap over a door. I am not a fan of the metal “cut into your wrist” type cuffs you can normally get so these are perfect for me. Made from leather and suitably restrictive without being harsh I couldn’t wait to have a go with them. A’s eyes nearly fell out of his head when he realised what I had in mind for him that night. I see my affair as my chance to be adored and the centre of attention, so I had no qualms at all ordering him to strap me in, blindfold me and torture me, with his hands, tongue and cock until I begged to be released. He didn’t actually and we did it against the door. Not being able to see heightened every sensation and I came against him in a pool of sweating heat. Guttingly, I have had to leave A with my little toys. I did try suggesting it to hubbie in the hope I could bring them home, but his Madonna/whore complex couldn’t quite allow him to see his wife strapped to a wall while he fucked her and he suggested some nice see through undies if I fancied spicing things up a bit. Oh well, it’s a start I suppose. And when he falls asleep I have the memory of a very amusing evening in my make shift dungeon to make sure I enjoy it as much as him!!

Seems to me the hardest part of this is finding the right opportunity. So in an age of LavaLife and Workopolis and the like, there should be some matching websites out there.

Sure enough there are, although many more for just the US than global or Canadian. But I did find a good one and am sure to find more. Take a look at www.idealist.org.

What’s wonderful about this site is that is works. And the organization behind seems genuine. The problem is that I’m not sure enough folks know about it. Surely there are more than 29 organizations with 65 volunteer positions to fill.

So I guess it’s not just us volunteers that need to know where to go to find the opportunities. I guess the nonprofits (and others) need to know where to put the message so it casts the biggest net. Just like the dating sites or job posting sites, we need a couple of these volunteer matching sites to rise to the top.

Shower cubicles can be different sizes, to have shapes matching every bathroom. Stylishly they are also answering both insides and requirements of customers. Amongst matte, transparent and translucent, as well as having glass or made of artificial materials available panes also cabins are locks with all sorts of people. There are shower cubicles equipped into the sliding or harmonica door, into the door opening outwards, whether inwards. It is often possible to buy them in the set together with the paddling pool. At the purchase keeping an eye on a few very important things is important, that is so as the way of opening, the airtightness, the comfort. As similarly as in the case of bathtubs, it is of persons which will be using it necessary to direct attention to fitting dimensions of the cabin to the height leaving the “margin” still so that it is possible freely to extend a hand up, to do the turnover etc. some they want still to put something in the cabin, so it is necessary to check, whether given object – the shelf, the stand) will fit and whether won’t make comfortable moves it difficult. The comfort of using is counting more than beautiful appearance. Shower cubicles have all sorts of people of sizes of the door – it is worthwhile keeping an eye on it since in bathrooms the place is usually limited. Here washing machines, bathtubs, different shelves are already standing – so that it is possible freely to move, the door of the cabin should not block the access to different devices. About the slimness cabins are donated to bathrooms with the put door (by smaller cabins) or harmonica (by bigger). An issue is still important who above all will be using bathroom fittings. Healthy, adult persons will get by but for children, older or ill persons different conveniences will be useful – handles, anti-skidding mats, additional railing.

Creating rapport with another person increases understanding and that sense of connection. In this w

Creating rapport with another person increases understanding and that sense of connection. In this writing I will be talking about ways to gain rapport with another person. Before we discuss how to gain rapport with another person you should understand about representational systems.

In the post “Going through the world” I had touched on the subject of the map and model of the world. We use our five senses to make the map and model of the world around us.

We use predicates of those senses to describe our world as we experience things. As an example here is a short list of predicates one might be using:

VISUAL

See

Picture

Look

Notice

Imagine

Appear

AUDITORY

Tell

Ring

Loud

Mention

Interview

Discuss

KINESTHETIC (feel/do)

Grasp

Feel

Hold

Hunch

Flow

Softly

OLFACTORY (smell)

Aroma

Essence

Musty

Sweet

Dank

GUSTATORY (taste)

Bitter

Flat

Spicy

Tangy

UNSPECIFIED

Advise

Decide

Know

Think

Understand

For a more complete list click here.

Phrases you might become aware of as you listen to people talk are as follows:

VISUAL

Bird’s eye view.

Beyond a shadow of …

In light of …

Showing off

AUDITORY

Afterthought

Outspoken

Tongue-tied

To tell the truth

Tuned in/tuned out

KINESTHETIC (feel)

All washed up

Come to grips with

Not following you

Slipped my mind

Boils down to

Understand these two list are not a complete list of predicates and phrases. But as you listen to yourself and others around you speak, you can become in tune with the predicates and really get a grasp on how what is said relates to how you can see clearly what is being said.

Now, with this understanding one other piece of human behavior is helpful in knowing about. Did you know how we breathe is an indication of the representational system we are using at that moment in time?

Generally, when a person is using or is in a kinesthetic mode they will be breathing from below the mid-line of the body and their speech will be slow and thought out. When people are in auditory mode breathing occurs more mid-line and speech patterns are more like a song or has a rhythm to it. While in a visual mode people tend to talk really fast and are breathing from higher in the chest. This is an important distinction you should make in noticing both from where you or another is breathing and what choice of words are being used.

On to the good stuff now that you understand about representational systems and phrases.

The first way to gain rapport with another person (this includes you) is to use the words they use. You have a partial list of predicates just begin to use the same predicates people use and it is like you are talking their language. So in other words match the words they use to gain rapport.

If a person is using visual predicates and you use auditory predicates as you communicate there is a disconnect and less of a feeling of understanding.

There are other kinds of things one can match to gain rapport with another person. Matching is the process of adjusting some aspect of your external behavior to approximate those of another persons behavior. For example, when the other person tilts his/her head to their left, you adjust the tilt of your head in a similar fashion to match his/her particular movement.

Ways to match others are as follows:

WHOLE BODY MATCHING

Adjust your body to approximate the other person’s postural shifts.

BODY PART MATCHING

Pace any consistent or stylistic use of body movements; i.e. eye blinks, breathing.

HALF BODY MATCHING

Match the upper or lower portion of another persons body.

HEAD/SHOULDERS ANGLE PATTERNS … PREDICATES

Match characteristic poses that another person offers with his/her head, shoulders and predicates.

INDIRECT MATCHING (Cross-Over Mirroring)

Using one aspect of your behavior to match a different aspect of another person’s behavior; i.e. adjusting the tempo of voice to match the other person’s rate of breathing/ pacing the other person’s eye blinks with your finger or head nods.

With this not being a complete list of all the ways you can match a person I’d like to mention one last method of gaining rapport with others. The last method is to literally assume rapport. If you want to gain rapport with someone you don’t know if you begin to talk to them as if you knew them all your life there is an unconscious communication that takes place between you and the other person. One of the most effective ways I do it is before you begin to talk with another person just remember someone you already have a relationship with and go into the tone of voice you would use with them and the facial expressions and all the other unconscious behavior will fill in. It is helpful to really go into the state of actually knowing this new person as if you knew them your whole life. See what you would see, hear what you would hear, and feel as you would feel.

Now as you “Go through the world” isn’t it interesting how easily you can make the kinds of connections you want with others and yourself, wasn’t it?

Lots of people get matching tattoos for hundreds of reasons, from best friends to people mourning a loss. One category of matching tattoo that I am starting to feel is almost a curse is the “we are so in love” matching tattoo. Almost every single couple that I have known that have gotten such tattoos have ended up splitting. And in most cases on very bad terms. I don’t know what it is, but such tattoos seemed to be jinxed. I am sure that this isn’t the case for everyone but I just feel from my experiences it seems to be the majority. This thing that was gotten because a couple wanted to show their commitment to everyone becomes a scar that reminds each of the pain of going through a break-up. Well I guess this is one way to look at it, it can also be seen as a reminder of the good times shared with this person, that things were not always so bad. I’m not saying that I regret my tattoo, because I don’t. I’m just saying I don’t know if I would ever get another, it just seems to mean doom for the relationship.

Don't let this happen to you! (Shopped for effect, hopefully someone would notice this before installing!)

I recently got a good question from a reader asking for advice regarding some replacement flooring. Here was their scenario: “We just bought a house where most of the rooms and halls have a beautiful floor. Some rooms had a bad stained carpet so we got rid of it. We searched on the internet and we bought what was the perfect match. Today they came, and OMG they are way too dark reddish looking compared to what we have. It’s supposed to be the same floor by the picture but they don’t have the same color and black ends as ours.”

Unfortunately, this is not an uncommon occurrence. Hardwood flooring, even of the same species and style, can vary dramatically from manufacturer to manufacturer.

A good metaphor for this phenomenon can be found in the printing world. Printers mix inks in order to achieve colors, much like painting. The industry standard is Pantone, using the Pantone color chart. This helps printers get as close to true color as possible. The Pantone system specifices exactly how much of each color ink should be mixed to achieve a certain color, which helps keep colors consistent from printer to printer.

So enough about printing, how does this apply to engineered hardwood flooring? Like so: Unfortunately, there is no Pantone-like system for staining or style in the hardwood flooring world. Each manufacturer will modify their wood flooring as per their specification. You may think you’re safe because your species is a natural, with no stain. Unfortunately, this is not so. Many manufacturers will stain photosensitive woods that change color due to sun exposure so that those woods’ color already looks like what they will darken to down the road.

So enough with the scares (it is almost Halloween after all, right?), what can you do to avoid this terrifying scenario?

Remember this: In the hardwood flooring world, color is king. Two engineered wood flooring products may be labeled the exact same thing, but until you have real live samples to compare to your existing flooring, you really have no idea. Also, please save yourself a lot of agony and do not base your color matching off of pictures on the Internet. (Sorry for all the bold passages, but this is important stuff, people!) This is in no way to disparage Internet hardwood retailers or to say that their photos are intentionally misrepresentative; the fact is that computer monitors are not all consistent in terms of color, so all web photos should be considered an approximation until you have a sample in hand.

In addition, if you are trying to match an existing floor, try as hard as you can to get the identical product from the same manufacturer. If this means contacting whoever built the house, or previous owners, whatever you can, because this is the only way to guarantee that you will get the most accurate match. If you can’t do this, then be sure to bring samples from the retail store or e-tailer shipped samples and compare them to your existing floor. (Also, make sure you specify to the retailer that you want samples that are representative of the color spectrum, so that you aren’t stuck with a patchwork of grain types and colors on one end and a mostly consistent grain type and color for the rest.)

It’s a lot to remember, fair homeowners, but your reward is a beautiful floor that’s consistent as well as the satisfaction of knowing you avoided the mortifying consequences of an unmatched floor. Now that’s scary.

Have a safe and happy Halloween!
