The anechoic chamber is a room where sound cannot bounce off any surfaces (as the wall fins are all facing in oblique directions). The room is set on springs so it can pick up no vibration from outside. Sound cannot travel. If you speak, you have sense that the sound just dies out of your mouth. These are the quietest places on earth and the chamber at Orfield labs, pictured and linked to above, is certified as such.

This is probably old news to some, but I’ve just found this beautifully drawn paperback. With simple story, lots of variety, a small size and pretty  colours, it’s worth reading, owning and coming back to. Illustration comes courtesy of Philip Bond (whose work I particularly like, see Asteroid post, below on this blog), Jason Shawn Alexander, Steve Rolston and Eduardo Barreto. There is also an introduction by Michael Chabon, who produced the first comics for Dark horse, under the same title.
