Let’s face it…there are many a mathy post-rock band making awkward melodies at the present time. But i don’t personally see this as a bad thing, so long as one sorts the wheat from the more abundant chaff. In these terms, Hreda would be some tasty cous-cous….but i can’t see that analogy going much further.
Hreda are a self-proclaimed “Doom Pop” trio hailing from Oxford, UK, known for many a mathy export including This Town Needs Guns and The Edmund Fitzgerald. This 7″ sees the band ditch the cello that was featured on previous recordings in favour of a less cinematic, though no less grandiose sound. Duelling guitars create frenetic soundscapes held solidly together by the steadfast, driving rhythms of drummer Russ.

TTNG certainly did not disappoint with their debut LP Animals last year and now they have released two of the better tracks from that album, remodelled into ethereal acoustic numbers for our delectation. These versions of “Panda” and “Baboon” feature alongside tracks by Yonderboy, Peasman, Ora Cogan and Fortywatts on a podcast released by Leeds based ezine Tapes and were recorded recently when the band were touring with Joan Of Arc. In acoustic form you can even further appreciate the beyond intricate riffs of Mr Tim Collis.

Primo post dedicato alla musica dalle nostre zone, la Romagna. In particolare questo disco viene da Forlì, che musicalmente parlando è probabilmente una delle città più fertili in Italia.

I Venezia erano (purtroppo) un gruppo completamente strumentale e decisamente originale. Lo stile musicale è classificabile come math-rock, si rifanno sicuramente allo stile proposto dell’etichetta americana Touch & Go negli anni 90, ma anche a band più moderne (un nome su tutti: Tera Melos). Tuttavia il pregio di questi pezzi è di suonare freschi e soprattutto sinceri e non artefatti, nonostante la complessità di alcune parti.

È un peccato che si siano sciolti, ma è ancora di più un peccato che questo disco non sia ascoltato, per cui accaparratevelo.

Dear Shock Mountain, I apologize for not posting a lot this week, but my week has been kind of crazy. It’s not like many of you are probably missing your pop punk fix anyway, so whatever. That’ll return soon.

Anyway, the Rock and Metal Forum on Sputnik Music recently voted (overwhelmingly) this album to be the best album of the last decade. While I may not agree with that completely, this is definitely one of the best metal albums of the past decade. Quick, hard-hitting, mathy metal/punk/rock is fused with really non-metal song structures and produces a sound that is 50% ferocious and 50% beautiful. The raw power that Converge throws out on this album is something that gets matched very rarely by contemporary bands. Even if you’re not a big fan of metal or harder music in general, I recommend at least giving this album a shot. I first got it when I wasn’t too into harder music, and I loved it just as much then as I do now.

Rooftops’ debut album “A Forest Of Polarity” (CP014) will be released on November 17th, 2009 on Clickpop Records. With Drew Fitchette, Mark Detrick, and Jonathan McIntyre on guitars and Wendelin Wohlgemuth on drums, Rooftops craft intricate, mathy pop rock with dense counterpoint and sparse vocals. However, the band’s tapped notes, and complex, cross accentuated rhythms are balanced by emotive melodies and moments of delicate beauty. Alright, i’ll start with an apology. I’ve had an extremely busy week (as planned) and I have not posted recently. Rest assured I have not been lazy and it all works out for the greater good. First of all my self and a friend had planned on attending the To The North gig on Thursday Jura books, which we did in fact skate all the way out to (from Surry Hills) and we arrived kind of disoriented, late, and generally got a bad vibe from the store to be honest, and seeing as we were both late and poor we decided the $10 cover charge was simply too much considering we were definitely going to the Sandringham. The weekend has been fairly chaotic. A group of friends came up from Canberra and we ended up seeing somewhere around 15-20 bands play (which i’ll get to later). The gig was very successful, one of the bands played a kind of post-rock-ish set.. may have been Vera. When Chimps Attack I think I may have enjoyed the most, whom we ended up meeting after La Quiete the following night. To The North sounded strangely different to what I was expecting, without trying to sound pretentious (as I usually do) I’d say it sounded a little more Hardcore than Skramz really, but diffinately in no way a disappointment. I’m sorry I really can’t place how each band sounded precisely as we were all fairly drunk have sculled a bottle of vodka before the show (between 3). We also didn’t manage to get any photos basically because we were very poorly organized, however there will be some exclusive images photographed by Excelsior thrown up if not tonight; tomorrow, of two shows we attended (one unexpectedly). I will also soon be moving this blog onto a new website with more content (events, live recordings, photos etc.) and a generally better feel hopefully within the next week. I’m currently in between shifts at the moment so I’m afraid i’ll have to leave it at that, and yeah.. keep your eyes peeled, and if you have any gigs we should know about including your own feel free to contact me. Imagine if the Japanese dude who wrote all the original Nintendo songs, like Mario and Zelda. Had an unhealthy obsession with RUSH and ZAPPA but  modernized it with a twist of Tom Morrello guitar. Then and only then can you even comprehend the musical powers of BUFF CLOUT.

This 3 song demo is intense and precise math  rock from deep space 69. What’s that you say? Only 3 songs? Well don’t worry these 3 songs clock in over 10 minutes and that’s with no vocals.  The guitar and drums are so cohesive that they sound like Henry Ford  must have felt when he stole the assembly line idea from Native Americans and secured himself as Hitler’s 2nd in command.  If you like your Rock n Roll complicated, intense and trippy. Then check this duo out. Hopefully this Demo will only be the first of more to come. 3 songs. RECOMMENDED.

Что это: EP, 3 трека, 17 минут

Жанр: Math Rock, Post-Rock

Как звучит: Электронный джаз-рок. Почти отсутствуют их фирменные гитарные диалоги. Очень много электронного звука. Отличные барабаны.

Хорошее: Слушать интересно, не однообразно, техничная игра

Плохое: Нет хитовых композиций, поменялся стиль музыки

Итого: Противоречивая пластинка. С одной стороны группа экспериментирует, а с другой хочется услышать знакомый узнаваемый звук. Я бы не рекомендовал данный EP для знакомства с группой. Только если вы любите пост-рок или фанат LITE.

Dopo Dysrhythmia, la matematica si fa opinione e strumento di altri terroristi metallici, denominati Keelhaul, Cleveland, Ohio. Gli Slayer e i Don Caballero giocano a carte, chiudendo con una patta e senza barare. La fuori imperversa la bufera, mentre in uno scantinato quattro signori masticano gli strumenti con la perizia di un coroner e si preparano a riemergere dal silenzio, nell’oscurità. Musica per nulla originale, si capisce, ma collusa con i terroristi Knut per un certo modo di intendere la pesantezza sbilenca e progressiva. Cinque anni bastano per mandare il nome Keelhaul dall’avanguardia – ricordate ‘Keelhaul II’? – alla tradizione e ad una certa staticità di intenzioni, che paradossalmente non compromette minimamente il valore di un disco scritto e suonato senza sbavature; i matti hanno riconosciuto la patologia e lucidamente la iniettano con la foga di allora. Progressioni sludge-thrash surclassano voci e feedback, macinando un flusso di sapienza metallica che virtualmente potrebbe procrastinarsi indefinitivamente e…stavolta ci sono melodie parietali (‘Kirby Wurm’, ‘Waiting For The Worm To Sleep’), che placano la schizofrenia crimsoniana. No, la macchina ben oleata non è in vena di esibizionismo e finirà per lo più con lo stuzzicare gli appetiti dei metallari che si stufano presto di ascoltare contando. E smettetala di ragionare in termini di immobilismo. Keelhaul ha ragione ad innalzare il proprio disco dallo status di mestiere e lo fa giocando la carta dell’esperienza e del controllo, staccando l’esecuzione di quelle partiture dalla costrizione pianificata o dalla jam-session furibonda o lisergica. Tra qualche anno farà sorridere pensare ad un disco simile: passerà in secondo piano e verrà ributtato nello stereo da qualche nostalgico post-metaller attempato. Solo per amore filologico.

One of the biggest regrets about not going to a show that I harbor within me is not going to a show billed as 15 At 15th House held in Columbus a few months back. Tons of incredible bands played it, including Wingnut Dishwashers Union, Spooktober, and the Joint Chiefs of Math. While there seems to be an oversaturation of two-man drum and guitar bands permeating the underground music scene these days, it’s a style that I have a deep love for. Even though there’s a limited range of stuff you can do with just two instruments, the bands usually find some way to take it to the next level and really start doing some crazy awesome stuff. The Joint Chiefs of Math are no exception. This duo with a guitar/drum setup reminds me of a more hardcore Giraffes? Giraffes! or maybe even Lightning Bolt without the bass. They play a slightly more intense form of math-rock than most of their contemporaries, sounding like what would result if your favorite speed metal band fell on some effects pedals in a rock tumbler. Technical, fast, and loud, these guys have also been featured on a compilation with many of my favorite bands, including Snowing, Algernon Cadwallader, 1994!, Boys & Sex, Hightide Hotel, Best Friends, and Boyfriends. If that assortment of bands there doesn’t give you some kind of expectations about the caliber of music the Joint Chiefs play, I don’t know what to tell you.

Так как новый EP группы LITE под названием Turns Red задерживается, то предлагаю ознакомиться с группой Mirror (до 2006 года известная как Journal Spy Effort).

Группа Journal Spy Effort образовалась в 2003 году в составе 3х человек: Кимото Такахиро (Гитара), Канеда Масаси (Бас) и Симомура Сатоси (барабаны).

В июне 2004го группа издает свой первый EP с одноименным названием на лейбле Catune, а в декабре группу покидает барабанщик. Проведя тур, в том же месяце ребята находят нового драммера,  Окура Тайсуке. В 2005м ребята проводят тур по Японии вместе с американцами MEDICATIONS, а в 2006м меняют название на MIRROR.

В январе 2007го группа серьезно меняет состав. В группе появляется новый барабанщик Фукуяма Дайсуке и 2й гитарист Мори Кенсиро.  Стиль музыки также меняется с пост-рока на мат-рок. Уже в июле выходит первый альбом группы “on,then,in”, а в декабре они проводят тур по стране в поддержку альбома (12 городов и 13 выступлений). И наконец в 2008 году ребята проводят сольный концерт в Токио.

Музыка группы действительно похожа на LITE, пульсирующая, техничная, наполненная гитарными переливами или быстрыми проигрышами на фоне неровных дистортнутых аккордов в непонятном рваном ритме. В каждой песне группа пытается нарисовать какое-то настроение, явление. Досточно взглянуть на названия песен: дождь, саванна, прогулка и прочее. Если сравнивать MIRROR непосредственнос с LITE, то первые мелодичнее и грустнее, не такие агрессивные. Плюс в песнях MIRROR иногда присутствует вокал.

Таким образом для меня альбом MIROR – on,then,in стал альбомом недели.

Maybeshewill é um grupo meio que math rock, meio que post rock formado em Leicester, Reino Unido em 2oo5 por dois estudantes da faculdade local e que chegaram a lançar independentemente seu primeiro trabalho, o EP Japanese Spy Transcript. Com o tempo, a proposta de um post rock fora do comum e com referências cinematográficas e de cultura popular chamaram mais músicos que aos poucos foram ingressando e se estabilizando na banda. Com três albuns de estúdio lançados – sendo o mais novo esse ano – o grupo supera muitas expectativas, principalmente da mídia e da própria comunidade de fãs.

I’ve noticed that we have a serious lack of certain genres on this blog, so I’ll be uploading some in the next few days we haven’t touched upon yet. Giraffes? Giraffes! play Math-Rock, meaning there are crazy time signatures, and “wacky” use of instrumentation. When I say “wacky” I mean it in the most serious of ways. These guys are great musicians. I love how one second everything is slow and low-key, then the next it’s upbeat, dance music. Check out this album, fo’ reals.

Everybody should give the instrumental post-rock genre a listen once, there’s something for everybody and with so many great bands around at the moment such as Mono, Mogwai, This Will Destroy You, 65daysofstatic etc we’re spoilt for choice.

One band that has been making a steady name for themselves over the last few years is Northern Irish group And So I Watch You From Afar. Their debut self-titled album came out early this year on Smalltown America Records; eleven ear-shattering and beautifully epic songs showcasing the band’s technical prowess. To prove my point here’s a cool official video for the opening track Set Guitars To Kill on their album.

Give them a try; you’ll be blown away and no doubt have bleeding eardrums by the end of it. Now set those guitars to kill!
