Ok, some of you really enjoyed the Singapore Math workbook recommendation, but for some kids, the portability of a workbook just isn’t as compelling as the interactivity of an online program.

((Am I going to say it? Yes, I probably will.))

Well, there’s an App for that. It’s called DragonBox

Here’s a YouTube of 2 kids playing the game DragonBox Yup, they are 5 and 8 years old, playing a cool iphone/android app that uses the rules of Algebra to have fun. The PC version is coming soon.

Will these kids be able to pick up an algebra workbook after they are done playing the game and fill it all out? Probably not, but it will make learning Algebra ‘for real’ a lot more intuitive and fun. And some kids will become interested in picking up an Algebra box and working their way through it.

So much of Elementary Math is about getting ‘Math Facts’ to Automaticity and learning to associate the proper procedure with the proper situation, that some kids will really yearn for the balance of higher-order thinking in Math, as found in DragonBox.

Q- But didn’t you just convince me that Automaticity is so important.

A- Yes it is, and here are some wonderful programs that can be used Online over the summer to check for knowledge gaps and hammer home the Automaticity. Depending on the child though, you can get a lot farther with the Automaticity if you provide a little balance with more Abstract Thinking. Other kids just want more ‘virtual pie.’

Pie?

One reasonably low cost site is Aleks.com There is a link to a free trial on the very first page. We find their ‘pie’ to be strangely enticing. Every time a child demonstrates their mastery over a new skill, they see a page with a pie chart which shows which grade-level skill they have, and which areas they need to complete to unlock availability to fill in the whole thing. Being certified as having Mastery over anything is very motivating for some kids.

Summer time is a great time to build your child’s math confidence. What are you waiting for? If you need individual help deciding which one to pick, contact Robin for a little spot of support.

There are several options for studying for the GMAT, depending on your budget and how comfortable you are studying on your own vs. in a classroom. I’ve taken two bar exams, studied at home both times, and feel very comfortable studying on my own. So I’ve decided that instead of spending hundreds of dollars on classes, I will purchase some review books as a starter. Here are the books I’ve decided to start with:

The Official Guide to the GMAT – 12th Edition -

The Princeton Review, Cracking the GMAT 2012

Kaplan GMAT Premier 2012

Kaplan GMAT Math Workbook

Kaplan GMAT 800

I purchased all of these books on Amazon at a substantial savings from the retail price. Kaplan also offers an Online Quiz Bank for $199 which I may use if/when I decide that I need the practice. I am targeting two top 20 business schools located in my geographical area and will need a 700+ score on my GMAT to get into either one (NOTE: I obtained a 690 on my first practice exam, so I think that a 700+ score is well within reach if I continue to practice).

As the name of this blog suggests, I am a Dad – and time management is going to be my biggest hurdle to success on this test.

Wow! This combined volume is super-handy for teaching children aged 5 to 7 the essential math skills they need to succeed in math! I love the lively illustrations and the tons of fun stickers this book contains. There is a handy index to show parents the specific pages that cover each basic math skill. I think this book is ideal for parents who homeschool or for parents who want to give their children extra practice on math at home without making it a drudgery. The book has 152 pages, not counting the beaucoup of stickers in the middle of the book. The stickers are labeled with the specific pages with which they are designed to be used.
