Feel free to post Matt any questions you may have. This guy is my good friend—he is extremely accessible and eager to chat about this sort of stuff!

Enjoy…

As a Christian in the film industry, how would you determine what you will or will not do on screen (explicit language, acted violence, scenes with explicit sexuality, etc)?

This is probably the question I get asked most often and it’s one of the most difficult ones to answer, only because it’s on a case by case basis. There’s obviously a separation in the characters that I play and in my personal life. I would play a killer but I’m not a killer. So you can’t rule out playing a role that in your personal life you morally object to. I’m all about telling stories, whether they’re for pure entertainment or whether they explore issues that society needs to address. If I just played good, morally upright characters I’d be severely limited in my storytelling. What I choose to do or not do is directly related to the story the script is telling – is this a story I want to tell also, is it well done, it is something I’m passionate about? If it turns out that yes, this script is something I’m behind, the story is compelling, then I’ll start to look at the actual content. Violence is a pretty easy one for me. Let’s say my character stabs someone with a knife in the film. I never actually stab someone. That was fake. It may look real on screen, but as long as the stabbing serves the story that I want to tell, as long as it makes the story more honest, then great, that’s something I’ll do. Sexuality is much harder. There is no set on earth where the director would give you a real gun and tell you to shoot the other actor. But let’s say you’re playing a sex scene and my character gropes the other actress. Well, that’s real groping. I’m really grabbing skin, I’m really kissing skin. That gets much more difficult. It may serve the story, it may be non-gratuitous, but there are certain things I’m just not comfortable with. I’m completely fine with telling a story that involves sex – it is a real and important part of life – but because I want to protect myself, my wife, and our relationship, we’ve set up a rule that helps. My wife and I always say that if we didn’t do it before we were married, I’m not going to do it with another girl on screen. That leaves room for me to tell the stories that I want to tell, but it also sets a boundary to keep our relationship safe. But like I said before, this is all on a script-by-script basis. I could be faced with the same sex scene in two different scripts and I might choose to do one and not the other. It depends on the story and if it’s something I want to be associated with.

How do you and Ellen handle marriage when you are portraying someone totally different in your acting career (which might include being in love with someone else!)?

The main thing is for me to make sure that Ellen is totally involved in what I’m doing. She may not be on set with me, but I want her to read the script, to know what scenes I’m shooting that day, for her to be involved. I have a friend who’s also a married actor, and I’ve learned a lot from him about how he keeps his relationship with his wife strong. It’s easy to become a quick family on set because you spend so much time with one another working towards a common goal. If my wife wasn’t completely up to date with what we shot that day, what I was fearful of going in to work that day, etc. it would be too easy to come home and be too exhausted to explain anything to her. My dream of having a career as an actor is equally as much her dream, so she’s involved. There also has to be a level of reassurance there. If I’m playing a serial killer, that’s not something that hard to separate from who I really am. If I’m playing some normal guy who falls in love with a girl, that’s harder. If my wife was an actress and she was on set all day with other guy pretending she loved him, I’d want some assurance when she got home. So I do the same.

I am curious about the medium and message of various art forms. What does a film do to a story that first appeared in a book—how does this newer media form of the movie affect the meaning or content of the original piece?

I don’t think changing media forms necessarily has to do anything to the meaning or content of the original, but it certainly can and sometimes does. I’m just trying to think of adaptations I’ve seen recently where I’ve both read the book and seen the film. For instance, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is obviously an expose on sexual violence towards women in Sweden. The book and film are both disturbing, and each in different ways. Fincher’s version of the film couldn’t show everything the book described, but it was maybe even more horrifying seeing what little Fincher did show. In that way I think the film aided the book’s message. I thought it was the same with The Hunger Games. The books are a pretty clear political critique and commentary on the effects of war on children. There’s this amazing shot in the film of citizens in District 11 getting blasted with water hoses, and it immediately brought up images of civil rights riots in Birmingham, AL in the 1960s. That’s something a book couldn’t do. As a society we have certain images burned into our brains, and I think it was a smart move as a filmmaker for Gary Ross to use that water hose image to drive home Suzanne Collins’ themes of political unrest and government oppression. It took no words and a shot that only lasted 1 or 2 seconds, but it had the effect of pages and pages of writing. I guess what I’m saying is that a well thought out adaptation of a story from one media form to another should only heighten or aid the original in a way the first media form couldn’t. I wish I could think of an example right now of an adaptation completely turning the original on its head, but it turns out I’m not that smart.

I took a blogging-break during a trip to the States. I am resuming with a different sort of post.

I took a blogging-break during a trip to the States. I am resuming with a different sort of post. My wife and I are good friends with Ellen and Matt Godfrey, and Matt plays a role in the film adaptation of Blue Like Jazz. I have yet to see the movie, but Matt has been gracious to let me interview him. Readers of Hopeful Realism will know that vocation and media are themes that pique my interest. Matt offers helpful reflections on both from inside a unique industry. Here is part 1 of my two-part interview with him….

How did you get your role in BLJ?

My wife Ellen and I are long-time Don Miller fans, and back in 2008 she read on a blog that he was working on turning Blue Like Jazz into a movie. The book had a real impact on both of us, so I knew I had to do whatever I could to be involved. There were basically no details about the film available back then except that Steve Taylor was directing it. I finally came across the email address of Ben Pearson, the cinematographer for Steve’s previous film. I had no idea if he was involved in BLJ, but I emailed him my picture and resume and basically just laid all my cards on the table. I told him I was a huge fan of the book and I really wanted to be involved in the film. He responded and told me he’d forward my information on to Steve, and honestly I thought that was where it would stop. But a day or so later Steve called me and invited me to Nashville to audition. That simply never happens in the entertainment industry. Ben and Steve are a rare breed, and I’m hugely grateful to them for their openness and their talent. I got to Ben’s house in Nashville and read for several different parts in the film but nothing seemed to be a great fit. A lot of directors would have just ended it there, but Steve kept thinking of other roles for me. He called me up one day and asked if I could do a Russian accent, to which I quickly said yes. Then I promptly found an accent coach and learned how to do one. I went back to Nashville and auditioned again for the role of Yuri, which turned out to fit like a glove.

Matt Godfrey ("Yuri" in the film)

You have appeared in a few of other works, none of which could be labeled “Christian.” Is BLJ a “Christian” movie? Are “Christian” and “non-Christian” suitable labels for movies and other art forms?

I think BLJ is as much a “Christian” movie as Vera Farmiga’s Higher Ground or Tree of Life. It’s a movie that deals openly with issues of faith and American Christianity, but it doesn’t have an agenda to push on you. I think applying a label to a piece of art – like calling something a “Christian” movie – does the art a great disservice. Contemporary Christianity has created such a closed-off subculture that we feel we need to make films that cater to the church, rather than just telling honest, compelling stories. I find films or poems or novels that sacrifice honest storytelling to push an agenda offensive – whether I agree with the agenda or not. Every artist has a point of view that will of course be communicated in the piece of art, but reducing a movie to a talking point or a take-away nugget just isn’t great art.

How do you understand your vocation as a Christian plying his craft within an industry often criticized by the church?

I’m passionate about telling stories. So was Jesus. You can point to countless times in the Gospels where Jesus gathers a bunch of people around and essentially says, “Listen to this story. It’s true.” When God created the world He spoke it into being. We’re made in God’s image, and God is creative by nature. I think God is pleased with great storytelling, and some of the most spiritually impacting moments in my life have happened through art – listening to a certain song or watching a certain film. I think I’m also called to carry Christ out into the world – and the entertainment industry just seems like a natural fit to me. I understand it, I’m fueled by it’s energy, and I love it. We’re also called to love the city where we live and to pray for it. Los Angeles offers such an amazing opportunity to do that. I love being on set and just making relationships with people. Loving people. Showing them that I’m a professional, that I work hard and that I care about my work. I don’t throw my beliefs in people’s faces, but I bet that on 80% of the sets I’ve worked on people have walked up to me and started spiritual conversations without being prompted. Once you’ve worked with someone so closely for several weeks you’ve gained their respect and their friendship. That’s a great place for those conversations to start.

You got to work with Miller. From your perspective, how did he wrestle with the shift from book author to screenwriter?

I don’t know how well I can answer this question without putting words in Don’s mouth. I can say though that it was such an honor for me to get to know him and to work with him. At one point while Ellen and I were in Portland for the premiere of the film, we went with Don to his office. It was pretty surreal to be sitting there where Don works. And from the perspective of a reader of his work, he transitioned from book author to screenwriter like he was born to do it. I remember reading a draft of the script back in 2008 and immediately thinking, “I have to be involved with this movie!”

What have been the greatest temptations and joys for you personally in seeing this film come to the screen?

Since this is my first widely released film it brought up a whole new set of temptations and joys I’d never experienced before. The whole process has been a joy. From working on set with actors I respect, to doing Q&As with excited audiences screening the film, to traveling up to Portland for the premiere. Honestly, it’s just been really fun. What a blessing. It’s exacerbated some temptations I’ve always had, namely putting your identity and self-worth in your work. It’s hard sometimes to read a negative review and not feel downtrodden. Ellen always has to remind me that my identity is an adopted son of God, and my self-worth comes from the fact that Jesus loved me so much He died for me – and a critic taking a crap on your work could never change that. Still I’m learning how to do that. And I think step one is to stop reading reviews. If you get a good one you feel your ego start to expand, and if you read a bad one you’re suddenly having a bad day. That’s not a good place to live in.

In Tampa on Friday, gatekeeper Nick Iannuzzi kept the gate with a decision over totally unproven 8-1

In Tampa on Friday, gatekeeper Nick Iannuzzi kept the gate with a decision over totally unproven 8-1 fringe prospect Dan Biddle.

Saturday in Kiel, Germany, Polish undefeated prospect Mateusz Masternak dominated fringe contender Felipe Romero to a 10th round TKO. Romero, the Mexican champion and a solid gatekeeper-type on an international level, won the first round, but Masternak took over the fight completely from the opening bell of the second round onward. Sprinkled in were a couple knockdowns. In round 4, Masternak used clever footwork to get himself in perfect position after a stumble by Romero and then dropped the Mexican with a quick right hand. In round 6, the Polish prospect caught Romero with a clever counter uppercut that landed with perfect timing and precision, dropping Romero hard for roughly a 9-count. By the 10th and final round, Masternak was mostly chasing Romero around the ring, although the Mexican managed to fit in a moment or two. Midway through the 10th, Masternak began pounding Romero on the ropes, prompting the mouthpeice to go flying. The ref stepped in and stopped it- a little prematurely, I think, although there was no doubt that Masternak was on his way to at least a dominant decision.

Masternak returns to the rankings in much stronger position this time around, checking in at #16, just behind a guy in Silvio Branco who recently drew with a 10th-ranked contender. This forces everyone rated #16 or below last week down a spot each, including Matt Godfrey, who at long last exits the rankings after 28 consecutive weeks in.

Dan’s Top 20

Champ: None

1) Yoan Pablo Hernandez (9-93-93)

Last Fight: 2/4/2012- UD12 #4 Steve Cunningham

Next Fight: Unknown

Erased any doubt as to the better fighter between him and Cunningham. A fight with Lebedev now would be huge.

2) Denis Lebedev (9-113-113)

Last Fight: 11/4/2011- UD12 James Toney (UNR)

Next Fight: 4/4/2012- vs. Shawn Cox (UNR)

After reportedly being close to signing a fight with French gatekeeper Rachid El Hadak, Lebedev has instead opted for a bout with Shawn Cox. This seems like a very low-reward fight for Lebedev, and if Cox happens to be for real after demolishing former contender Wayne Braithwaite, it might carry some risk, too. I don’t understand the matchmaking from Lebedev’s team.

3) Antonio Tarver (9-37-37)

Last Fight: 7/20/2011- RTD9 #7 Danny Green

Next Fight: 5/26/2012- vs. #13 Lateef Kayode

Tarver criticized Kayode on ShoBox, and Kayode took exception. So now we have a grudge match. I don’t think the Nigerian is ready for this, but perhaps Tarver will finally show his age.

4) Marco Huck (9-278-278)

Last Fight: 2/25/2012- L*(MD12) vs. HW #2 Alexander Povetkin (at HW)

Next Fight: 5/5/2012- vs. #7 Ola Afolabi

Huck will fight Afolabi May 5 in Erfurt, Germany, fresh off his near victory over Povetkin at heavyweight.

5) Steve Cunningham (9-407-407)

Last Fight: 2/4/2012- L(UD12) vs. #3 Yoan Pablo Hernandez

6) Krzysztof Wlodarczyk (18-354-354)

Last Fight: 11/30/2011- TKO11 #9 Danny Green

Next Fight: Unknown

7) Ola Afolabi (18-160-160)

Last Fight: 3/3/2012- RTD5 Valery Brudov (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

See Huck’s notes, above.

8) Guillermo Jones (18-79-79)

Last Fight: 11/5/2011- TKO6 Michael Marrone (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

With all of his possible mandatories tied up with other fights, Jones has made renewed noises about moving up to face a Klitschko. In the meantime, he continues to train in Miami for a fight that has yet to materialize.

9) Danny Green (37-122-122)

Last Fight: 11/30/2011- L(TKO11) vs. #8 Krzysztof Wlodarczyk

Next Fight: Unknown

Shane Cameron is hoping to fight Green if he beats Monte Barrett in May. No major news from Green’s end.

10) B.J. Flores (3-3-93)

Last Fight: 1/28/2012- TKO6 Hugo Pineda (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

Flores has said he might fight the Fragomeni-Branco winner. Not sure how that will be affected by the fact that there is no winner.

11) Francisco Palacios (3-53)

Last Fight: 11/5/2011- UD8 Joell Godfrey (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

The WBC has mandated a rematch with Wlodarczyk, but that seems almost forgotten as Wlodarczyk has since chased fights with Roy Jones and Antonio Tarver, neither of which seem to be currently on the table.

12) Alexander Alexeev (3-64)

Last Fight: 2/4/2012- UD12 #15 Enad Licina

Next Fight: 5/11/2012- vs. #19 Firat Arslan

Alexeev will fight Firat Arslan in an interesting crossroads-type fight on May 11 in Germany.

13) Lateef Kayode (3-72)

Last Fight: 9/9/2011- UD10 Felix Cora, Jr. (UNR)

Next Fight: 5/26/2012- vs. #3 Antonio Tarver

Kayode has snubbed a mandatory shot at Guillermo Jones’ alphabet belt for a shot at an even better fighter, the aging but still very capable Antonio Tarver.

14) Giacobbe Fragomeni (3-177)

Last Fight: 3/17/2012- Draw (MD12) vs. Silvio Branco (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

Fragomeni appears to be showing his age after nearly losing to an even older man in Brnaco.

15) Silvio Branco (3-3)

Last Fight: 3/17/2012- Draw (MD12) vs. #10 Giacobbe Fragomeni

I wanted to take the opportunity to share my brother’s latest blog entry about his severely disabled daughter, Anika. I’ve copied and pasted the blog entry here but if you are interested, I encourage you to click-through and read some of his other writing. It’s so refreshing to see a young kiwi male writing so honestly and openly about his life and experiences… I’m so delighted to be able to share Matt’s writing with you all for many reasons but mostly because I am uber proud of him for being such a great Dad as well as a blessing to all the people in his life (including me)!

Anika

Well, this blog is going to be real hard for me, as I am going to re-enter into what was the most difficult part of my life, but also the biggest lesson I have ever learned and what reminds me to smile every day. This may make you emotional, so all I would say is prepare yourself.

My daughter Anika Roimata Godfrey, is now 7 years old, she is what we call highly disabled. She is severely brain-damaged, has low tone cerebral palsy which basically means her brain can’t control her body and is relatively floppy. She needs support to sit up, can’t roll over and is in a wheelchair throughout the day. She is blind but she can hear. She can no longer eat food as her throat ‘valves’ don’t work and needs to be fed through her stomach. She has diabetes insipidus, meaning we have to monitor her water intake. She can only communicate through facial expressions, i.e cry when sad, smile when happy, concerned look when scared.

She is the GREATEST thing that ever happened to me.

It all started when her mum and I were 19, we thought we were having heaps of fun and bulletproof, standard at this age. We fell pregnant and had this beautiful baby that we called Anika on 12 Feb 2005, when we were then 20 years old. Most babies come out pretty gross but Anika was stunning, and fortunately I had 2 weeks paternity leave to spend with mum and baby. Scary, testing but really fun happy time was had, Anika managed to shit all over me one morning, hilarious!

Please note from here the details for this are the best to my memory which is very sketchy due to the stress I was under at this time.

In the third week I was back at work, it was a typical Wednesday morning tea at Russell School in Porirua when I got a call from her mum, saying she is taking Anika to the doctors because she hasn’t stopped crying and something doesn’t feel right. As a typical 20-year-old, ‘she’ll be sweet’, until lunchtime I get another call saying she is on her way to Hutt hospital. So typically I dropped everything and went straight to the hospital, thinking it should be fine and I will see my workmates the next day. Anika was just constantly crying, when a baby is crying the only thing you can do is trial and error, they don’t say what hurts you just have to find out. From Wednesday through to Friday morning was a blur, they did a test on Anika and found out she had late onset Strep B meningitis which is effectively an infection of the brain.

Quick Facts bout Strep B Meningitis – 1 in 8 babies will come into the contact with the disease and 1 of 1000 will develop it, and of that only 10% will be late onset, which basically means the disease has had a chance to spread around the system before attacking it. (Which means Anika is pretty unlucky) Note you cant catch this disease, it comes from the birth canal during birth.

So on Friday morning they tell us that Hutt hospital is ill-equipped to deal with a child as sick as Anika, and we will be transferred in an incubator to the Child Intensive Care unit in Wellington Hospital. By this stage our families and best friends are all gathered round at the hospital and the word is getting out to other people who know us that she is very very sick. Anika is no longer crying. Her head and eyeballs are so swollen they look like they are about to explode and she is not tolerating any fluid. The doctors tell us there are 4 sets of drugs that they can give her, and they are all at the max of the dose they can give her. They reassure us that Anika is too intoxicated with drugs to feel any pain but they are worried that this can’t go on any longer. I have never seen so many people crying at once and I think I am still naïve to the seriousness of the situation, in this optimism that any 20-year-old has, of ‘its going to be alright’.

At some stage from Friday through to Saturday, we were told by specialist doctors that death is likely and we might not have much time with our daughter left. And on Saturday morning I remember sitting with my mother next to Anika, and my dad came into the room and said ‘Matt the doctors want to talk to the family in a meeting room’. I think I knew what was coming, and all I could do is cry so much that I was wallowing, my body had no energy to walk to the meeting room and I had to be propped up by my parents either side. I then remember sitting there, and after about 10 minutes taking my hands away from my eyes and every member of Anika’s family were in tears, and there were 3 doctors and a nurse standing up ready to address us. They proceeded to tell us that Anika was in such a bad way, is unlikely to live and that we should take the life support out and leave her to die. WOW, life’s going just great isn’t it? Naturally we had questions, and as we were talking a nurse came into the room and advised us that Anika had made the decision for us, she had spat the life support herself and is breathing (can’t tell a Hutt girl what to do ay?). They moved us into what I called the death room, where the whole family can sit around and band together when the kid is dying.

The emotions you go through when you think your own daughter is going to die and some of the decisions you make are unreal. After I head this news I went back and sat with Anika and I was laughing and smiling, like I wanted to appreciate her life (cos it was real funny ay?). Your body chemicals are just out of control, and you have to roll with it. I said some stupid things about who couldn’t be with us, who can visit etc, looking back is just so stupid!

Anika wasn’t meant to last the day, and did, and the following day the doctors said she has improved slightly as she was sucking a dummy, but still think she will die soon. She kept living, and the doctors started to change their mind a lot, they went from hours, to days to weeks, to months to a year, (then they gave up betting cos they lost too much money). The doctors do this on purpose, if they give you a small expectation, and Anika exceeds this, then even though they are wrong, you are happy, but after a while you stop listening too. The mood kind of went from when will she die, to what problems will she have if she lives, and then from there what support we need as parents to raise her. As a young 20-year-old experiencing this, you a kinda carefree, and don’t really know any better so are much more relenting to the punches, but our bodies and mental health were under a hell a lot of pressure.

However we started to be exposed to what I think is humanity in its greatest form. There was copious amounts of support for us and we were meeting people who devote their lives to helping those with special needs. We also were exposed to some great messages of love and we were learning a lot about what life is about. One of those messages that I have always remembered, we read on a hospital wall somewhere, was this, written by Emily Kingsley:

When you’re going to have a baby, it’s like planning a fabulous vacation trip – to Italy. You buy a bunch of guidebooks and make your wonderful plans. The Coliseum, the Michelangelo David, the gondolas in Venice. You may learn some handy phrases in Italian. It’s all very exciting. After months of eager anticipation, the day finally arrives. You pack your bags and off you go. Several hours later, the plane lands. The stewardess comes in and says, “Welcome to Holland.”

“Holland?!” you say. “What do you mean, Holland?” I signed up for Italy! I’m supposed to be in Italy. All my life I’ve dreamed of going to Italy. But there’s been a change in the flight plan. They’ve landed in Holland and there you must stay. The important thing is that they haven’t taken you to some horrible, disgusting, filthy place, full of pestilence, famine and disease. It’s just a different place. The pain of that will never, ever, go away, because the loss of that dream is a very significant loss. But if you spend your life mourning the fact that you didn’t get to Italy, you may never be free to enjoy the very special, the very lovely things about Holland.

My beautiful daughter Anika is the resulting product of an illness, which is not her fault nor is it anyone else’s fault. Her mum and I were simply dealt a card in life, and we have to play it. The card involves, getting up in the middle of the night to roll her on to the other side, changing nappies, carrying her where wheelchairs don’t go, taking precautions when she is sick, learning communication, feeding her through a tube, dressing her, hospital and specialist appointments. If you don’t play the card you lose the game anyway right? May as well play!

But she has given me the best gift I have ever been given. I am not religious, but she is living proof that soul and a spirit is very much alive. Her life is not about dramas, about failure, about insecurities, about judgement. When you have a disabled child you learn to expect nothing, and everything that child works hard for and every small milestone, you celebrate and are so proud. You cannot dislike Anika, and she will never be a burden. Every person that gives her a chance automatically loves her, and you become one with her. The people who deal with a classroom of these kids are the most credible humans, they don’t get paid much, but they do it for love, and you can tell they are very touched happy people.

She has made me the person I am today, and I think that the reason I am deep with the meaning life does scare people, but if you do read this then you see why I am like I am. However anyone that does know me, knows I very rarely get deep in person, and I invite you to meet my Anika, to have that experience of seeing a human that’s soul fights through bodily or earthly problems to stay alive every day. You don’t need to do anything but be in her presence to experience this, and if you want to go further all you need to do is talk to her, you don’t get an answer, but she gets so much joy out of this and you will go away changed. And me, well I would love to see you too, get in touch with me on FB, or text me.

Long one this week, but I had to do Anika justice. Song for the weekend is Queen – The show must go on!

Aging but undefeated Spanish prospect David Quinonero predictably knocked out Georgian journeyman Levan Jomardashvili in the 4th round, extending his consecutive knockout streak to 25. His only decision victory came in his second career fight. Yet he still has yet to step up in competition at the age of 36. No time like the present, David!

It seems like an eternity since Enzo Maccarinelli was brutally knocked out by Alexander Frenkel a year ago, especially with the initial speculation that he would retire, followed by the endless rumors of his as-yet unrealized return at light heavyweight. The latest buzz is still pointing toward an eventual return, but it is- and has been for a long time- safe to say that his days as a competitor at cruiser are over for the foreseeable future, and now that he’s been out for a year, I make it official. His exit makes room for Matt Godfrey to limp his way back into the rankings for the first time since Antonio Tarver forced him out 2 months ago.

For Comparison, here are the Current Ring Magazine Cruiserweight Rankings:

Next Fight: 10/22/2011- vs. Rogelio Rossi (UNR)

It’s official. Instead of trying to prove himself against the man who rightfully beat him, Huck has opted for a so-so defense against fringe contender Rogelio Rossi.

Next Fight: 10/22/2011- vs. #17 Enad Licina

The Licina fight is now set for late October.

12) B.J. Flores (9-65)

Last Fight: 7/23/2011- RTD5 Nick Iannuzzi (UNR)

Flores just signed with Don King, and wants fellow King fighter Guillermo Jones.

13) Francisco Palacios (9-25)

Last Fight: 4/2/2011- L (SD12*) vs. #6 Krzysztof Wlodarczyk

Next Fight: Unknown

In my opinion he did just enough to win one of the worst fights I’ve ever seen against Wlodarczyk, so I’m in no hurry to see him again. That being said, he performed well against a top 10 guy and deserved the win on that night, so I can’t exactly ignore that.

14) Lateef Kayode (9-44)

Last Fight: 9/9/2011- UD10 Felix Cora, Jr. (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

Kayode has engaged in close fights with less-than-stellar opposition in 2 of his last 3 fights.

15) Troy Ross (9-134)

Last Fight: 10/30/2010- UD10 Carl Handy (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

I can’t find an explanation anywhere, but Ross’ scheduled eliminator on November 19 against Garrett Wilson has now been replaced by a regional title fight between Wilson and journeyman Chuck Mussachio.

16) Steve Herelius (9-64)

Last Fight: 2/12/2011- L(KO7) vs. #6 Yoan Pablo Hernandez

Next Fight: Unknown

It’s always hard to come back from a knockout loss. Herelius could become a go-to quality opponent for the guys locked out of the Super Six.

17) Enad Licina (9-65)

Last Fight: 5/7/2011- KO1 Michele De Meo (UNR)

Next Fight: 10/22/2011- vs. #11 Alexander Frenkel

Will take on Alexander Frenkel in late October.

18) Firat Arslan (1-10)

Last Fight: 7/15/2011- TKO5 Lubos Suda (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

Arslan has finally got his comeback on the right track after the Herelius setback by destroying the decent Suda.

19) Alexander Alexeev (1-36)

Last Fight: 6/11/2011- TKO2 Damian Norris (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

The Abdoul fight was canceled.

20) Matt Godfrey (1-1)

Last Fight: 6/10/2011- L(UD10) vs. #17 Lateef Kayode

Next Fight: Unknown

It’s a testament to the stagnation in the bottom half of the rankings that Godfrey- who last had a significant win over 3 years ago- continues to hang around the top 20.

Wednesday October 21st, 2009 Philadelphia, Pa. Former Cruiserweight King Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham’s dr

Wednesday October 21st, 2009
Philadelphia, Pa.

Former Cruiserweight King Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham’s dreams of regaining the IBF Cruiserweight belt from the man that took his coveted title, by close split decision, following their epic ‘Fight Of The Year’ nominated battle back last December, were shattered on Monday when Main Event’s boss Kathy Duva announced that Tomasz ‘Goral’ Adamek had relinquished the crown.

The IBF reacted quickly to Adamek’s resignation by announcing that Matt ‘Too Smooth’ Godfrey would be the next available for the vacant title and ordered negotiations to start for the fight with ‘USS’ Cunningham.
‘USS’ Cunningham, once described as the by Bad Left Hook’s Steve Christ as the “World’s nicest man” due to his never having a bad word to say about his fellow boxers or the would be opponents that have avoided him, took a typically philosophical stance on hearing the news by saying, “Once again, I’ve got my marching orders, my mission is to be two time world champion, and with Adamek vacating the title, my sights are set on beating Matt Godfrey, I honestly thought it was going to go this way since July so he’s been on my radar.
It’s kinda bittersweet, I’ve wanted the rematch since December, I thought I did enough to win the fight then and I wanted to take my belt back from Adamek, but if the rematch can’t be made, this is the next best thing. I’ve been saying since December I’ll be 2 time in ’09, and I still want that. I’m ready, willing and able to fight anyone for the IBF World Title, I’ve been in the gym steady, like I always am and I am ready to fight.”

It is expected that an announcement of the date and location of Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham vs. Matt ‘Too Smooth’ Godfrey for the IBF Cruiserweight World Championship will be made shortly.

Honestly, I have no idea why it took me so long to recognize that Liev Schreiber, the narrator of HB

Honestly, I have no idea why it took me so long to recognize that Liev Schreiber, the narrator of HBO’s “24/7″ series, is the same Liev Schreiber who plays Sabretooth (above left). I even watched that tepid “Wolverine” movie on the plane back from Spain. It took until yesterday for me to be illuminated.

“Mayweather/Marquez 24/7″ might be the actual highlight of the upcoming weekend in boxing, especially since Juan Manuel Marquez revealed he drinks his own urine to recover his “vitamins.” Suddenly, the series is interesting, although kinda gross. If Marquez upsets Floyd Mayweather, betcha urine-quaffing becomes the new fitness craze.

There’s also a Showtime card, a Telemundo card, a gofightlive.tv card and two pay-per-views this weekend, plus assorted other cards of note. None of it warrants its own separate preview, except maybe Ivan Calderon-Rodel Mayol II, but… nah. Let’s just hit it all at once.

We’ll go in order of approximate importance/meaningfulness.

Integrated Sports pay-per-view, Saturday, Puerto Rico. The junior flyweight rematch between Calderon and Mayol headlines its own ppv. The 34-year old, top-10 pound-for-pound Calderon just looks more and more vulnerable all the time, and Mayol is good enough — as he proved in their action-filled, injury-shortened draw — to cause him trouble. You can say Calderon looked improved in his last rematch, against Hugo Cazares, but you wonder how much longer he can avoid his first loss. Still, fighting on his home soil could be a boost. On the undercard, exciting junior lightweight Roman Martinez takes on a suspect opponent, as he’s had 26 of his 27 fights in his native Argentina and lost the one outside it. P.S., I’m not sure why Calderon, a Top Rank-promoted fighter, is headlining a card that competes with a Top Rank-promoted pay-per-view. Anyone?

Showtime, Saturday, split doubleheader in Denmark/California. This double-header serves essentially as a preview show for the network’s Super Six super middleweight tournament, with two contestants, Mikkel Kessler and Andre Ward, taking separate tune-up fights. Kessler, whose fight will be on tape delay from Denmark, has the better opponent: one Gusmyr Perdoma, who narrowly lost in 2007 to Dmitri Sartison, whom Kessler beat with some ease the next year. Ward is fighting one Shelby Pudwill, whose name I’m pretty sure is made up, and who has been knocked out by middleweight hype job John Duddy (in one round!) and Carl Cockerham (current record: 12-18), whose name I’m pretty sure is a punch line to some British joke. I’d normally badmouth such mismatches, but I’m so desperate to see the Super Six tournament go forward that I’m hoping both Kessler and Ward score one-second knockouts so nobody gets cut or injured, as the Kessler-Ward bout may be the most interesting first round tournament fight. Better yet? Showtime wouldn’t have put this card on at all. But I guess Kessler needed to work on some rust, and Ward needs all the experience in the ring he can get before fighting Kessler. Also, the “James Toney should be retired” tour continues on the Ward undercard.

Off-television bout, Saturday, Mexico. I never thought Cristian Mijares was as good as some folk who had him top-5 pound-for-pound did, but then, I didn’t think he was bad enough to lose to some unproven bantamweight. He did just that against Nehomar Cermeno earlier this year, and now they’re having a rematch; the first result was a tad controversial. Having seen some highlights and a few grainy rounds, I can determine that the fight would have been hard to score, and that Cermeno wasn’t an easy out. Still, this is a must-win fight for Mijares if he’s to be taken seriously again anytime soon.

Top Rank pay-per-view, Saturday, Mexico. I don’t think I’d mind Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. as much if the ads for the guy’s headlining fight didn’t call him “Mexico’s next great champion.” If they were just like, “Mexico’s reportedly undermotivated boxer who nonetheless is often in fun slugfests,” I’d not have such a negative attitude. His opponent is Jason LeHoullier, who lost his last fight, to Harry Joe Yorgey, but he’s as qualified if not more than some of Chavez’ recent opponents. LeHoullier has had a spot of bad luck, scheduled as he once was to fight Chavez before and Forrest, too, although both came down with training injuries (rumor has it Chavez was just fat, though). On the undercard, bantamweight Fernando Montiel continues his spate of fighting guys who have never beaten anyone very good, and his opponent is one of Hozumi Hasegawa’s recent early-fight KO victims. It really would be nice to see Montiel step up against somebody, maybe Eric Morel, his oft-mentioned next opponent.

The rest. There are nondescript Telmundo and gofightlive.tv cards on Friday night… Straweight alphabet titlist Donnie Nietes defends his title Saturday… Tyson Fury, the British heavyweight prospect that has some people excited, is fighting a live body Friday, a decent opponent for a guy with seven fights. It’s way too early for me to get excited about Fury, who hasn’t particularly impressed or disimpressed me from what I’ve seen. But he is in Ring mag’s “New Faces” section this month, saying that he’s as fast as David Haye, which is absurd but hey, ya gotta have confidence, I guess. If I were you, I’d watch for next month’s Ring mag “New Faces” feature. (Hint, hint)… Cruiserweight Matt Godfrey is in a stay-busy Cali fight that looks like a total mismatch, which only gets mentioned here because of the chance he might be the next opponent for one of my quasi-favorites, Steve Cunningham… new episode of Mayweather/Marquez 24/7, Saturday.

It’s funny what happens when you push yourself away from boxing for more than a week. Fights a

It’s funny what happens when you push yourself away from boxing for more than a week. Fights are a go then disappear. Fights are in jeopardy then are fine. You realize, really, how much of the news of boxing is gossip-driven, how much people react instantaneously to developments with such single-minded passion, only for counterpoints to develop shortly thereafter that suggest things aren’t really as crystal clear as they first appeared to so many.

Now that I’m back from Spain, there’s a lot of catching up to do, despite the excellent work of some guest bloggers on this site. Besides the subjects in the headline, there’s something to be said about boxers from Ricky Hatton to Paul Williams to John Duddy to Nicolay Valuev.

(This whole thing’s really more a “Round and Round” column, but we’ll go in chronological order on the fights in the headlines, then move to a bit of a “here’s what’s going on with some other fights” dealy-bob. For the entirety of the first three sections, my source of information is BoxingScene, with but one or two exceptions. For more info than I provided, read up there.)

Diaz-Malignaggi

–I know everybody’s sorta sick of talking about this fight by now, but I just wanted to clarify my stance on it. That stance is this: The Gale Van Hoy scorecard of 118-110 for Juan Diaz was ludicrous, one of the worst I’ve ever witnessed. That it came on Diaz’ home turf of Houston, as opposed to Paulie Malignaggi’s turf, makes it additionally suspect. It offends me, and it should offend you. But one of the reasons I didn’t react as strongly to it as some did, in the immediate aftermath of the fight, is because I thought Diaz won. The result was not unjust, no matter how ridiculous Van Hoy’s card was. That doesn’t change the fact that Texas is the worst commission in the country that regularly has big fights, and that it needs to clean up its act. By the same token, I was responding to Malignaggi’s rant in a way that was less than sympathetic in part because A. I thought he lost a close fight anyway and B. He knew Texas’ reputation well and very much wanted the fight nonetheless, because that was his biggest paycheck. These are mitigators to my outrage — outrage that David rightly pointed out last week in this space we ought to maintain. (Typically, I react very strongly to poorly rendered decisions, either by judges or referees.)

–Despite Van Hoy’s attempts to justify his scorecard, it still doesn’t smell right. Yes, Diaz did pick off a good number of Malignaggi’s jabs, but not THAT many. 118-110 is terrible, either for Diaz or Malignaggi. I do find something interesting in Malignaggi’s assertion that the rematch should be on his home turf in New York. Why would he want that, I wonder? It must be pointed out, as RingTV’s Doug Fisher did last week, that when Malignaggi got what some thought was a favorable home-country decision win over Herman Ngoudjo, we didn’t hear Malignaggi complain then about how boxing is “full of sh*t.” One of the things that’s quite likable about Malignaggi is that he’s high-strung, and he’s more candid than most boxers. But let’s not make him the patron saint of truth-telling that some have made him out to be. I wish I knew what to make, by the way, of Oscar De La Hoya bashing the
Van Hoy scorecard. As Diaz’ promoter, it could just be a CYA move, or
it could be that De La Hoya means it; it must be noted that he
criticized the judging when a Golden Boy prospect got a controversial
decision over DeMarcus Corley.

–What’s next? Obviously, a rematch is the natural — even desirable — outcome. It should be, if it happens, on neutral soil. Diaz is talking about Ricky Hatton, a big money fight if it happens, so while I understand why he’d target that, I always wish dudes who were in close, controversial fights would do their best to right that ship before moving on to the next one. There’s also been some discussion about the remarks after the fight by Bob Papa that Malignaggi “did himself no favors” with his rant. It would be absolutely wrong if Malignaggi got frozen out of another HBO gig because he yelled some. I don’t have any conditions or mitigators to attach to that statement. Malignaggi fought well, and entertainingly, and frankly he’s an interesting character whose personality I find compelling, and all of those ingredients are the stuff that HBO gigs ought to be made of. His promoter, Lou DiBella, has talked of matching Malignaggi against Amir Khan, an interesting fight in my view and a better one than the mandatory alphabet title fight Khan is in talks for against Dimitriy Salita.

Mayweather-Marquez

–I agree with trainer Freddie Roach that the idea of showing Floyd Mayweather-Juan Manuel Marquez in select movie theaters smacks of desperation for a fight that doesn’t have everyone in boxing excited and continues to be plagued by reports of subpar ticket sales. But I’ll also say that sometimes, good ideas are born of desperation. Consider the big regional fights all over the country this year, the routine quality match-ups throughout 2009 — it all comes from a sport that needs to do smart things to motivate fans in a bad economy. Now, more people will have the opportunity to see a pretty good fight card (even if the main event has issues, the undercard is good) for a pretty decent price.

–Part of the reason the fight has “issues” is because not only is it a questionable match-up — Mayweather is a true welterweight, Marquez is an overblown lightweight, the bout will take place at a reported 144 pounds — but because there’s a near-constant stream of reports out of both training camps that neither man looks all that damn good right now. I’d caution everyone not to overreact to such reports. There’s always gamesmanship about this kind of thing, although sometimes it proves true, as with De La Hoya going into the Manny Pacquiao fight. But it certainly doesn’t help the fight’s case if Marquez isn’t looking good. HBO and De La Hoya keep saying it’s going to be a good competitive fight, Mayweather and Marquez are saying all the right things, but I’ve never been sold on the match-up and it’s going to take a monumental effort by HBO’s 24/7 reality series to convince me the fight will be much of one.

–It is nice that Marquez will have a pretty good backup plan should he lose the fight. Some alphabet sanctioning organization or the other has mandated that the winner of the lightweight Michael Katsidis-Vicente Escobedo fight on the Mayweather-Marquez undercard will get a shot at Marquez’ title, and while I’m not sure what trainer Nacho Beristain would do if he had to put two of his charges, Marquez and Escobedo, against one another, it’s still not a bad fallback fight for Marquez. Another undercard note: Zab Judah’s career ought to be over, really, after he skipped out on a welterweight clash against Antonio Diaz, but he still got interest from Shane Mosley and turned that down too. Judah scoffed at Diaz’ credentials and scoffed at the half-million on the table for a Mosley fight, but he’s really delusional so far as I can tell if he thinks he can do better. He won’t be missed here.

–Despite an accumulation of allegations of unlawful behavior against both Mayweather and his trainer, uncle Roger, I doubt any of it will get in the way of Mayweather-Marquez, but it does have a way of undercutting Mayweather’s recent case that he’s a great guy who deserves our love, as opposed the gangsta image he presents. I’ve spent a lot of time studying Mayweather, and I don’t think he really knows who he is. I think he’s an insecure guy who wants to be loved, but he alternates between naturally dickish and naturally soft (for lack of a better word) tendencies. It’s possible for someone to be both at once, or to go back and forth between. I wouldn’t read too much into any of it — that he’s somehow a phony when he’s being nice, or that he’s a phony when he’s being an asshole. He might be being a phony at times, but the wild to-and-fro is probably more a product of his sincere actions than not.

Cotto-Pacquiao

–There are, per usual, an endless number of distractions in the Pacquiao camp for his 145-pound bout against Miguel Cotto. It’s always hard to tell when or if said distractions will catch up to Pacquiao. Where will his training camp be — the Philippines, Mexico? The Philippines strike me as a bad place, given Manny’s short attention span and desire to please the people of his country at every turn. Why is he finishing up a movie when his trainer, Roach, wants him in camp? It seems like the movie can wait, if you ask me. Why is Roach at odds with so many of Pacquiao’s advisers? I’m guessing it’s because, from what I can tell, most of Pacquiao’s advisers are kind of dopes, but I’m not sure what can be done about it. I’m not saying it will or won’t have an effect, as I’ve been fooled before into thinking all these distractions will be a factor, but it strikes me again, as every time, as unnecessarily playing with fire.

–I haven’t seen much in the way of solid reports that Pacquiao’s camp actually requested a 24-foot ring for the Cotto fight, which isn’t happening; it’ll be 20-foot, per Las Vegas regulations. However, if the idea is that Pacquiao requesting a 24-foot ring somehow suggests something about Pacquiao’s strategy we didn’t know already, I’m not buying it. The plan always was to box the bigger man, I’m betting. A 24-foot ring might have helped with that, but Pacquiao’s proven adept at maneuvering in and out. It’s not like the guy’s ever going to do a Malignaggi-esque jab and circle routine.

–After falling on and off Top Rank Promotions’ radar, it’s encouraging to hear that Edwin Valero-Humberto Soto at lightweight is something Top Rank boss Bob Arum is focusing on doing on this undercard. We’d be talking not one but TWO Fight of the Year-caliber bouts on the card, as Pacquiao-Cotto has that kind of potential, too. If that fight was on the undercard, it might trump the two quality bouts on the Mayweather-Marquez undercard by itself, and then Arum would be able to say, truthfully, that he did bring the people an “amazing” undercard as promised. Go Bob go. Another option, which wouldn’t be a bad addition but doesn’t add much if it’s instead of Valero-Soto, is that endlessly delayed bantamweight bout between Fernando Montiel and Eric Morel.

Round And Round

The thinking at HBO, reportedly, is that middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik might reschedule his fight with Paul Williams on Dec. 5, but that is premature in one major way — Pavlik still isn’t cleared by doctors to fight, what with the staph infection on his hand. And Wiliams’ promoter won’t agree to the fight until he sees the medical records himself. Still, that’s progress from the Williams camp threatening to take another fight instead.

That would put a potential welterweight doubleheader f
eaturing Mosley against Joshua Clottey and Andre Berto against Isaac Hlatshwayo to Dec. 26. To which I say, “Does anyone think a fight the day after Christmas would draw much of a crowd?” But it may fall down for another reason: Berto, among other things, is reportedly sniffing at the idea of fighting for $750,000. I like Berto as much as the next guy, but he needs to dial it down. I recognize HBO created this situation for overpaying for lesser Berto fights. That doesn’t mean dude doesn’t have some responsibility for recognizing the marketplace has shifted. Is he gonna get more than 750 Gs off HBO?

I’m not sure where anyone is getting the idea that Juan Manuel Lopez-Celestino Caballero is a go for January 2010, but that’s what Caballero is counting on. The only thing I’ve heard Lopez say is that he generally wants to fight Lopez in early 2010, but I also recall some absurd purse conditions. If you based the match-up on recent performances, Caballero isn’t the threat to Lopez his people may think, so I’d take the fight — a potentially difficult junior featherweight fight, to be sure — and get the kudos I’d deserve for beating a good, avoided foe.

Junior flyweight Brian Viloria wants a rematch with Edgar Sosa, who beat him the first time they met. I do, too. But Sosa’s situation is such that I’m not sure he’ll be fighting a real top-notch opponent any time soon, as he makes good money in Mexico fighting anyone, and the fact that Sosa’s beaten Viloria means he may feel he doesn’t have to fight him again. If I’m wrong about any of this thinking, I’ll be grateful.

Heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko being injured means his fight with Eddie Chambers is not going to happen until next year. Not much more to say on that. Also, Nicolay Valuev-David Haye will be for Valuev’s alphabet title belt after mandatory challenger John Ruiz agreed to take step-aside money. That means the Nov. 7 fight, once in trouble, is now safe. I second The Ring’s Eric Raskin, who said, approximately, “Paying John Ruiz not to fight — why didn’t we think of this sooner?”

That Showtime is considering a pretty good tripleheader Dec. 5 does nothing to indicate that it could come up with anything that could conceivably not get buried in the ratings by Pavlik-Williams, should that fight happen. I’d push it back one week; nothing happening then. The tripleheader would feature Timothy Bradley-Lamont Peterson at junior welterweight; Vic Darchinyan-Tomas Rojas at junior bantamweight; and Joan Guzman-Ali Funeka at lightweight.

Israel Vazquez is coming back Oct. 10, apparently, against Al Seeger at featherweight. I realize Seeger, who’s been knocked out by lesser men than Vazquez and who additionally may have some emotional issues to deal with after killing one of his opponents in the ring, is probably a sitting duck against Vazquez. But let’s not forget that we have no idea, zero, what kind of fighter Vazquez is going to be after a long layoff, injuries and at a new weight. If he didn’t pick Seeger, who’s at least proven himself a decent boxer, he’d be picking some no-name who’d be just as bad a sitting duck, right? The guy needs a tune-up fight to check where he is. I don’t have a major problem with this.

I could do without Tomasz Adamek-Andrew Golota at heavyweight, but the fight’s happening Oct. 24 in Poland nonetheless. Adamek, the cruiserweight champion, could be fighting someone more deserving or not so old or not so lame or not so heavyweight, but not for as much money as he’ll make against Golota. There’s still a chance Adamek could fight Bernard Hopkins Jan. 30, and the plan is for Adamek to fight Steve Cunningham in a rematch later that year; Cunningham, who reportedly has left Don King, has begun working with Adamek promoter Main Events, and could end up fighting Matt Godfrey on the Adamek-Hopkins undercard, if it happens. Another cruiserweight fight is in the works, one I’d like to see, between Marco Huck and Ola Afolabi, for Dec. 5. Busy day, Dec. 5, but it’s in Germany and there’s a time difference so I could find a stream perhaps.

There are reports that junior lightweight Robert Guerrero’s mandatory alphabet title defense against Mzonke Fana could happen before the end of the year. If Soto isn’t available, this is about as good as it gets, rankings-wise, for Guerrero right now, and he kind of has no choice if he wants to keep his belt. Still want to see Guerrero-Jorge Linares or Guerrero-Roman Martinez more.

Happy Halloween: Showtime wants to use that night to broadcast bantamweight Joseph Agbeko against Yonnhy Perez and lightweight Antonio DeMarco against someone named Jose Alfaro. The headliner is an awesome fight, and I gotta say, I’m impressed Showtime is sticking with Agbeko after he beat Darchinyan — it’s not atypical these days for the fighter who beat a network’s favorite to not find his way back onto said network much thereafter, like happened to Nonito Donaire after he beat Darchinyan, and Agbeko deserves better than that. Nice one, Showtime.

Forget about Rafael Marquez against Daniel Ponce De Leon at junior featherweight for Lopez’ not-yet-vacant WBO belt. Marquez and De Leon are both featherweights these days, and Lopez hasn’t vacated his belt, so this is so strange a move by the WBO to be talking this up, I can only imagine that their main motive is that they enjoy being made fun of.

Also forget about that Bernard Hopkins-Roy Jones, Jr. rematch. I’m still surprised this idea is getting any play anywhere in the press, and I’m guessing it wouldn’t if it hadn’t been for a war of words between Hopkins and Jones on some radio program recently.

A leprechaun’s pot of gold is on the table for Irish middleweights Andy Lee and John Duddy to square off in what would almost certainly be a hell of a slugfest Nov. 28, and… I apologize. That was not cool. I’ll stop here.

As it turns out, I was right when I said the light heavyweight Friday Night Fights undercard bout between Chris Henry and Shaun George would steal the show from the main event. But I didn’t realize it would be because Henry-George would be so goddam weird, and because the main event, between cruiserweights Matt Godfrey and Shawn Hawk, would be so gawdawful boring.

If you didn’t catch it, I don’t recommend watching Henry-George for the excitement of it — more out of the curiosity of the whole thing. In the 1st round, George blasted Henry with every right hand he threw. He wobbled Henry and had him in bad, bad trouble. Couldn’t miss him if he tried. And then, for no reason I can discern, he spent the next five rounds doing nothing, then got knocked down twice in the 6th and finally out. He landed more punches in the 1st round than he landed in the next three and a half. Granted, Henry wobbled him in the 3rd, but that doesn’t explain why he did zippy in the 2nd. Was he tired in the 2nd? If he was, that’s lame. Was his confidence busted by not being able to KO Henry in the 1st? If so, he must’ve started with absolutely no confidence whatsoever. Did he get hurt and we missed it? Maybe, but he didn’t show it. Bewildering. One of the more mystifying performances I’ve seen in a while, worthy of filing under the “what the hell?” category for year-end 2009 awards, which is a fairly thick file. I’d give Henry credit for rallying, but it’s easy to rally against a guy who doesn’t do jack, innit? My kingdom for the guy who scores the first George interview and asks him “Seriously, what was that?”

Hawk, despite his glossy record, was way, way, way out of his league against Godfrey. I think he won the last round in my book on sheer aggression to take his first round on my card, but I stopped scoring any way other than mentally after the ultra-boring opening round, and largely stopped paying attention. I spend a lot of time arguing with FNF’s Teddy Atlas, so let me do that once then agree with him once. First, Atlas jumped on Hawk for not throwing enough punches, but he didn’t throw many punches because his mind was boggled by how much better Godfrey was than him. He just didn’t know what to do with someone who had as many tricks as Godfrey did. Hawk, it seemed to me, was giving an honest effort. Second, Atlas jumped on Godfrey for not backing Hawk up. I’m with Atlas on this one. Godfrey could have, at any point, turned up the offense and Hawk would have gone cross-eyed trying to figure out what to do. When Gofrey unloaded, Hawk turned into a statue. But Godfrey isn’t, apparently, comfortable leading. And since Hawk was so confused, Godfrey didn’t get many chances to respond. Maybe Godfrey would be more entertaining against a high-volume foe, because he’s got some skills, but the trash-talking between Godfrey and studio analyst B.J. Flores hopefully goes no further, because the idea of those two fighting makes me want to drill a hole in my skull and let my brains ooze out slowly. It would be more fun. Godfrey, while he won, failed to capitalize on his big ESPN2 headlining opportunity.

Tuesday July 7th, 2009 Providence NABF and SNBC cruiserweight champion, Matt “Too Smooth” Godfrey ho

Tuesday July 7th, 2009
Providence

NABF and SNBC cruiserweight champion, Matt “Too Smooth” Godfrey hopes the fourth time is the charm for him when he takes on unbeaten Shawn “The Sioux Warrior” Hawk in the main event on this week’s ESPN2 Friday Night Fights show from The Arena in Philadelphia.

In a battle of full-blooded Native Americans, Godfrey (18-1, 10 KOs), rated No. 6 by the WBC and No. 7 by the IBF, is a Wampanoag fighting in the 10-round headliner against a Sioux, Hawk (18-0-1, 16 KOs).
Godfrey was supposed to face Herbie Hide earlier this year in a WBC Eliminator, but Matt was unable to fight due to a hand injury, and an IBF title fight against Tomasz Adamek, planned for this weekend, fell through when Showtime passed on the opportunity to broadcast.

“I’m preparing for Hawk as if I were fighting Adamek,” Godfrey said during a break from a recent workout. “This is a very important fight because I have another opportunity to showcase my skills on live national television. Fights fall through, that’s boxing. I can’t do anything about it and all I can do is keep focused on this fight. I don’t know too much about Hawk other than I know I’m going to beat him. He doesn’t bring anything that strikes fear in me – nobody does! He’s heavy-handed and he doesn’t know how to lose. Those are his two best assets. I’m not worried but I’m still taking him serious.”

The 28-year-old Godfrey, rated No. 10-ranked by The Ring magazine, has had his three most impressive performances fighting on ESPN FNF, knocking out Emmanuel Nwodo, Felix Cora, Jr. and Shaun George.
“This is my fourth main event on ESPN and it’s an opportunity for the sanctioning bodies, media and fans to see me again in action,” Godfrey added. “Every year I believe I’m going to be fighting in a bigger spotlight. I’m hoping that the fourth time around will lead to a world title fight for me. I’m ready to prove that I’m one of the best cruiserweights in the world; I believe I’m the best. When you’re rated in the top 10 by Ring, you’re definitely one of the best because there’s no politics involved, and it lists all of the different champions, not just the top contenders. I’m hoping a convincing win will push me up a little more in the ratings.”

Providence

NABF and SNBC cruiserweight champion, Matt “Too Smooth” Godfrey, plans to showcase his arsenal of skills July 10, headlining ESPN2 Friday Night Fights, against unbeaten Shawn “The Sioux Warrior” Hawk.

In a battle of full blooded Native Americans, Godfrey (18-1, 10 KOs), rated No. 6 by the WBC and No. 7 by the IBF, is a Wampanoag who will be fighting in the 10-round main event against a Sioux, Hawk (18-0-1, 16 KOs).

“I’ve got to prove to everybody watching on national television and others overseas that I am what I say – the best cruiserweight in the world without a world title,” Providence native Godfrey said. “I’m fighting a tough opponent like Hawk on ESPN gives me a step up in terms of being recognized as one of the top five names in the cruiserweight division.

“It’s a dangerous fight because Hawk is unbeaten, 16 knockouts in 18 fights. He doesn’t know how to lose. He’s training with all the confidence that he’s going to show everybody on national television that he’s a top cruiserweight. But he’s never fought anybody with my skills in the amateurs, pros or even sparring. On July 10th everybody will see.”

Thursday June 18th, 2009
Providence, RI

Two of the best young cruiserweights in the world, Matt “Too Smooth” Godfrey and Shawn “The Sioux Warrior” Hawk, have been on a collision course and lead promoter Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. (CES) officially announced today that Godfrey-Hawk will headline the July 10th ESPN2 Friday Night Fights show.

Godfrey (18-1, 10 KOs), rated No. 6 by the WBC and No. 7 by the IBF, will defend his NABF and SNBC belts against unbeaten challenger Hawk (18-0-1, 16 KOs) in the 10-round main event.

“Both of these cruiserweights were highly successful amateurs and now they are two of the top young contenders in the division,” CES president Jimmy Burchfield said. “Both are Native Americans, too. When Matt won the first Sovereign Nation Boxing Council (SNBC) belt, Shawn fought on the same card last November at 4 Bears Casino in North Dakota. This is the match-up American boxing fans want to see – two top fighters in against each other. Matt and Shawn have wanted to fight each other for a long time and now it’s finally going to happen.”

The Ring magazine’s No. 10-ranked Godfrey, who has Narragansett blood in his family, had a 194-23 amateur record, capturing six national championships, four open tournaments including the 2004 Everlast U.S. Championships, plus two in the Junior Olympics. He was a Bronze medal winner at the 2001 Pan-American Games, Silver Medalist in all four of that year’s national major tournaments – National Golden Gloves, PAL (Police Athletic League), U.S. Championships and U.S. Challenge — and six-time New England Golden Gloves champion.

As a pro, three of the 28-year-old Godfrey’s most impressive performances have been knockouts of Emmanuel Nwodo, Felix Cora, Jr. and Shaun George on ESPN. His lone loss was by 12-round decision 15 months ago in a WBC title eliminator to Rudolf Kraj in Germany, in which, Godfrey came on strong down the stretch only to run out of rounds.

Hawk, 25, is a full-blooded Sioux who comes from Crow Creek Reservation, North Dakota, which is the poorest Native American reservation in the country. Shawn had a 108-12 amateur record, including victories in four national championships, highlighted by a gold-medal performance at the National PAL Tournament when he was 14.

Looking at all the news this week, it’s all pretty much either about the junior welterweight m

Looking at all the news this week, it’s all pretty much either about the junior welterweight mega-fight between Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton, or it’s gossip about fights in the works. So we’ll keep this once-promised Quick Jabs column as an all-Round And Round column, with a tiny bit on the rest of the most important weekend fights. The dudes in the picture there are in one of them.

I hit some of the few Quick Jabbish items on Twitter — the controversy over the TIME “Most Influential” poll that jobbed Pacquiao, the bad advice super middleweight Jermain Taylor got from his corner last weekend, the TMZ piece on disgraced welterweight Antonio Margarito suing California over the hand wrap business — so if you want to catch up on those tidbits, go to www.twitter.com/tqbr.

The Rest Of The Weekend

On Showtime tonight, Carlos Abregu, the welterweight prospect last seen struggling mightily with David Estrada, is taking a step backwards to fight Irving Garcia. (In the photo, Abregu is on the left.) It’s probably a wise step backwards. There’s no shame in getting static from Estrada — he’s a tough fighter — but most of the best have been able to overcome him. Abregu can be a fun boxer, but he faded in that fight and he needs more seasoning before moving back up another level. Another fun-but-only-OK prospect, Marvin Quintero, is taking on what looks to me like a stiffer challenge than the last, against fast but light-hitting Wes Ferguson. Ferguson was last seen getting pasted by Edner Cherry on the Floyd Mayweather, Jr.- Hatton undercard, and between him and fellow “Mayweather Promotions” product Said Ouali, I’m gathering that Mayweather Promotions is very interested in getting a foothold in the lucrative “ShoBox B-side” market. Gary Russell, Jr. fights in a four-round off-television featherweight bout of which Showtime will broadcast highlights.

In other broadcast action this weekend, exciting and talented lightweight Urbana Antillon and welterweight “Contender” grad Alfonso Gomez, rebounding from that beating at the hands of Miguel Cotto last year, fight on Azteca America tonight. And you can catch some untelevised Pacquiao-Hatton undercard fights Saturday via ESPN 360 featuring a prospect I’m very high on, junior featherweight Abner Mares, and a prospect others are very high on, junior welterweight Mike Alvarado.

Round And Round

Mayweather-Juan Manuel Marquez started the week as off, but as the week moved on, it slowly moved more and more toward a deal for a July 18 pay-per-view. Details are sketchy, and the last official word at midweek was that it was not “done,” according to Golden Boy boss Richard Schaefer. They’ll fight at somewhere below 145 lbs., according to one report, but that’s all I can find out. We already talked about this fight plenty in our Open Thread. I kind of hate it, kind of understand it.

Welterweight Shane Mosley still is holding out hope that he will get the winner of Pacquiao-Hatton. I don’t see how. Marquez, Mayweather and Cotto all offer more money to the winner of that fight.

After walking away from cruiserweight king Tomasz Adamek, Bernard Hopkins is now targeting Carl Froch at super middleweight. ESPN’s Dan Rafael is skeptical, given Hopkins’ somewhat absurd money demands in recent discussions. I share that skepticism. B-Hop also said that he is interested in a Felix Trinidad rematch, but that contrary to reports, he wasn’t seeking it out. Trinidad, for his part, is now wavering, despite having a whopping $15 million on the table. Obviously, Hopkins-Froch is the more interesting fight, if it can be made. But Froch, having been rebuffed by the retired Joe Calzaghe, is turning his attention to Mikkel Kessler. If Kessler can manage to extract himself from his ever-growing series of eye-rolling fights, Kessler-Froch is fine by me, even if I have serious trouble imagining how Froch wins. We’re talking about two of the best fighters in a very deep division and I wouldn’t mind seeing it.

Two junior featherweight stars, Juan Manuel Lopez and Israel Vazquez, are making their next plans. Lopez wants to fight Antonio Escalante in July. So far so good. It’s a viable stay-busy fight while he awaits the availability of his next prospective opponent, and Escalante, an exciting fighter on a hot streak, deserves a payday. The aforementioned next prospective opponent would be, well, Vazquez. In September. I have my reservations about that one. First, Vazquez’ own plans call for him to return at featherweight around then, against Lopez or Steve Luevano. That means he’d have no tune-up fights, apparently. He needs one. We need to see if he has anything left after his surgeries and long layoffs. Jumping right into any tough fight, let alone one with Lopez — who looked so good early last year that I thought he was the class of junior featherweight even WITH Vazquez and his rival Rafael Marquez roaming the division — sounds very dangerous to me. I’m not utterly convinced, as some are, that Vazquez and Marquez are shot. But I’m skeptical that they aren’t damaged goods in some way. Let’s see them prove they can fight ANYONE before we see them fight the biggest and the best.

Contrary to what his promoter Bob Arum wants, lightweight knockout artist Edwin Valero isn’t all that interested in fighting Breidis Prescott on a July 25 pay-per-view. The thinking is that Valero’s beyond that. He’s right. I was interested in the fight because of both dudes’ gaudy knockout ratios, but Valero would have to be the favorite in that fight by a long distance. Who does Valero want instead? A. Joel Casamayor, which was one of my suggestions for him, just to see if he could handle a slick boxer, or B. Humberto Soto, which sounds like as much fun as a boxing match gets. If Valero doesn’t get his way, I won’t be too disappointed, but if he does, I’ll be thrilled.

Since HBO and Showtime have both stupidly turned down Adamek against light heavyweight Glen Johnson — just a terrible business decision, I think, even if there were budget considerations — and since Versus apparently has stopped picking up fights like this (and any fights at all), Adamek has turned his attention elsewhere. The possibilities for a July 10 bout include cheaper options for Showtime, Matt Godfrey and Shaun George. Those aren’t atrocious fights or anything, but Adamek deserves better, and the fans deserve better. We’ve got a true action star here in Adamek, and a very high-quality fighter, and a huge fan draw, by the way, so we need to see him testing himself against a higher level of competition. And Johnson deserves a big payday — he’s an excellent and exciting fighter himself. This is sad, disheartening stuff here.

Reportedly, Gerry Penalosa has been offered a fight with the winner of the bantamweight fight between Fernando Montiel and Eric Morel. There have been a lot of people dismissing this fight, including Pacquiao. But let’s assume Penalosa recovers from the beating he took from Lopez. I have no indicators that he’s seriously harmed from that, unlike the effect of the beatings Vazquez and Marquez dished out on one another. There are voices saying, “Montiel would rip Penalosa apart.” Really? Has anyone noticed how wildly inconsistent he is? I know he’s talented, and I think he’s closing in on pound-for-pound top 20 status, but he hasn’t shown me much at bantamweight yet. So as much as I’d be perfectly fine with Penalosa retiring now, HBO wouldn’t stop reminding us that he loved boxing more than his “wife and life.” Until I see signs of Penalosa deteriorating, I won’t campaign for him to conclude his career. The beating he took from Lopez, he would have taken 10 years ago. The size difference and talent difference was just that wide. I didn’t see slippage.

As much as we’re all interested in Ivan Calderon-Brian Viloria, I’m assuming, we’ll have to wait a while. Calderon will fight on the undercard against a top-ranked junior flyweight, Rodel Mayol, on the June 13 undercard of Cotto-Joshua Clottey. Apparently, the concern was that Viloria wouldn’t be ready yet, coming off his win over Ulises Solis not long ago. I think Calderon has often not taken the stiffest challenges, but I can’t blame him here for wanting to get back in the ring and especially in front of a rabid Puerto Rican crowd at Madison Square Garden. Under the circumstances, Mayol may be a heavy underdog, but it’s not a bad fight.

Word is that super middleweights Lucian Bute and Allan Green are negotiating successfully for a fight in the next few months. I think that’s a competi
tive fight if the talented but mercurial Green is properly motivated. I don’t know why Bute isn’t doing the rematch with Librado Andrade yet, though. And Green also says he wants a piece of Froch and, for some reason, Paul Williams. Froch-Green is a good fight, but Williams-Green, while mildly interesting, just doesn’t really make that much sense to me. What does Green bring to the table for Williams? Nothin’.

After a close loss, junior middleweight Deandre Latimore is pursuing a rematch against Cory Spinks. I can’t imagine either could find a fight that would make them more money, and it wasn’t a bad scrap the first time around. Why not do it again?

Happy birthday to me! Super middleweight Jean Pascal would move up light heavyweight to challenge Adrian Diaconu on June 19, my birthday, for an all-Canada scrap. Good fight, and a good present to Canada, as much as anything else.

Since the WBC decided to screw Timothy Bradley out of his junior welterweight belt for no good reason, Devon Alexander will fight Junior Witter at some future juncture for the vacant strap. Have I mentioned before how much I think the sanctioning organizations suck? At least Alexander-Witter is a decent fight. Actually, it’s almost identical to Bradley-Witter — young unproven speedster with moderate power against proven veteran.

Danny Green won a fight recently then called out Anthony Mundine. Green is a light heavyweight. Mundine is a middleweight these days. If they can work around that, it would be one of many endless Australian rematches I don’t understand or care about. I’m pretty sure this would be Mundine-Green XXXVI.
