Irgendwann sagt sie den grandiosen Satz: „It seems to be that in those speedy times, the most bravest thing you can do is to be still.“

2007〜09年の受賞者であるHannah Rickardの作品、「No, there was no red.」

We sent to a preview of ”Max Mara Art Prize for Women” at Whitechapel Gallery. The “Max Mara Art Prize for Women” is a biannual award recognising the achievements of a UK-based artist who has not yet had a major solo exhibition.2007–09 award winner Hannah Rickards‘ two-screen film ”No, there was no red.” is based on spoken accounts of a displaced image of a city seen over Lake Michigan as the result of rare temperature inversion mirages. I am a pretty impatient person, and I left the room after 1 minute of looking at this film work with mainly narration and not much movements. Therefore, I am afraid that I cannot talk if the work deserves to the award.

I was more excited to look around another exhibition at Whitechapel Gallery, “Live Forever” by the American artist Elizabeth Peyton. She portrays artists and musicians of her own generation including Matthew Barney, Jake Chapman, Jarvis Cocker, and Liam Gallagher, as well as iconic figures who have inspired her, including the young Elizabeth II, Georgia O’Keefe and Frida Kahlo. Her paintings on small canvases, portraying the subjects in her own unique style of colorful and rough touch, were pretty captivating.

I put a bag on my head and shot a self-portrait. Last night, while I was tossing and turning in bed,

I put a bag on my head and shot a self-portrait.

Last night, while I was tossing and turning in bed, I had a very important thought: No one wants to buy a photograph of twenty-three clones of me, let alone just one of me. I’m not a celebrity nor am I a hot sexy model, so unless our notion of hot-or-not changes in the near future, I’m outta luck trying to sell an image of myself. I jumped up and exclaimed, “Fuck it, I’ll just put a bag on my head”.

I’m totally enjoying the process and the outcome!

I’ve been thinking a lot about humiliation lately. A bag-on-my-head is definitely one solution to that problem. I like to think about a great joke Chris Rock once said. He said that when ladies look at him, they don’t see a hot sexy man and just get that urge to kick off their shoes and jump on him. They don’t look at him like they look at an icon like Denzel Washington. They look at him and weigh out the pros and cons: “Well…he is kinda funny.” I love that idea and I feel the same way. I mean, the jig is up, I get it, I’m not a sexy kinda guy: there’s no five-foot-four, one-hundred-twenty pound Asian dude gracing the covers of GQ or Men’s Health in America. Sex sells, and when I’m taking self-portraits and I don’t look like Matthew Barney or Anthony Goicolea, then I should stop with the self-portraiture or simply change up my overall appearance.

I’m excited to incorporate the bag-on-my-head concept into the Society of 23 as well. In terms of humiliation, I’m excited to create a series of Hazing artwork. Secret societies have a stigma associated with hazing newly recruited members. Having the brothers with bags on their heads would be a nice, humiliating element to add.

I also changed up my artist’s statement last night to a very short idea, and here it is:

I have an inability to negotiate between objective and subjective reality. My artwork is born from my personal space between these two worlds. By using recognizable signs and symbols from our objective reality, I can begin to describe my own experiences. Through my extremely personal self-portraiture, I question my own identity and existence, while trying to have a laugh or two along the way.

This bag-on-my-head idea is one of the rare moments in my practice where I feel like I’m actually throwing in the towel and thinking, “alright objective world, you win, I’ll play by your rules”. We shall just have to see how this develops.

The other day I uploaded documentation of pencil drawings for the Society of 23. Here’s an explanation of the pencil drawings that is on the Society of 23 website:

During the initiation process into the Society of 23, each brother takes a spiritual journey where he encounters the seven symbols of the society: 23, 2 Crowns, Fire, Grapes, Rice, The Scales, and Wings. When he returns from his trip, he is placed in a pitch-black room where he sketches the symbols he has seen.

If you head on over to the Society of 23 website, you can navigate from the homepage, to the Brothers page, and then click on any brother’s picture to learn more about him. On each page you will see a thumbnail above the brother’s name, as seen here:

When you click on that thumbnail, a slideshow will appear that presents the seven drawings he made during the initiation process. Here’s a peek at Andrew Ethan’s Grapes drawing:

And here’s a peek at Joseph Dylan’s Fire drawing:

I had a wild time creating these drawings. I’ve mentioned before that I have a lot of anxiety about drawing because I feel like it’s a technical skill I can’t quite get the hang of. My freshman year drawing professor, Lance Winn, changed my entire mode of drawing and I can say with confidence that I have some great skill at realism with graphite and pastel. But when it comes to line drawings with pencil, there’s something loss in translation from my eyes to brain to hand to paper. Sketching is like the absolute worst way for me get an idea out of my head—my ideas are almost always spewed out through writing.

So what was the problem and how did I solve it? Well the problem was: Each brother must draw 7 drawings. 7 drawings x 23 brothers. Solution: Blindfold myself! Yes, that’s right, I blindfolded myself:

While the mythology of the society’s initiation is still being worked out, I know that the brothers go on a spiritual journey that may or may not be drug induced. On this trip they encounter advisers, demons, past memories, and the symbols of the Society of 23. When they return from the trip, they automatically scribble the symbols onto paper in a pitch-black room. To mimic that situation, I blindfolded myself (no drugs!). When I first thought of this project, I really saw a similarity to Matthew Barney’s Drawing Restraint, where he constructed large apparatuses that then restrained his movement in some way while he attempted to draw a self-portrait:

The results looked like manic, childlike scribbles:

So go on and check out all the drawings at the Society of 23 website. I’m going to incorporate the drawings in a lot of installation and photographic work. It’s an element of this crazy world that is finally finished. Hurray!

A fantastic July 4th weekend has left me sunburnt, voiceless (as in, I literally lost my voice

A fantastic July 4th weekend has left me sunburnt, voiceless (as in, I literally lost my voice– probably from singing along to the “Thriller” album…twice) and helplessly behind in my art reading…but this gem caught my eye:

Slate posted a fascinating article by Sam Kean that describes the plight of museum curators in fighting the odorous disintegration of artworks executed decades ago in the medium of plastic, thought then to have a generations-long lifespan. The essay outlines the creation of new plastic products, too, that are meant to be bio-degradable and are finding their way in contemporary artists’ toolkits.

A Naum Gabo sculpture housed at the Philadelphia Museum of Art is described as looking like “Tupperware that had gone through the dishwasher too often” and other decomposing pieces are said to range in smells from “burnt hair” to “rasberry jam.”

Clearly, this is a serious issue for institutions seeking to record our cultural history; just a few of the noteworthy artists who have worked or currently work in instrinsically-unstable plastics include Eva Hesse, Duane Hanson (see pictured above), Matthew Barney and Jeff Koons. I guess it makes sense, then, that much of the money going into research for new curatorial techniques and solutions to this problem comes from insurance companies responsible for museums’ holdings.

I wanted to say “those plastic sculptures are sweating like a whore in church” in this posting, but just couldn’t find the right moment.

Thanks to Meg (who is diligently studying for the Bar exam in Cleveland– emerge soon!) for the tip.

Barney" width="251" height="300" />
Amore e psiche M. Barney

Internationales, of course. Diner time, grillade de requin.

It’s Mother’s Day weekend and, in honor of it, I thought today I’d write up a tribute to some awesome women who balance and blend the dual identities of musician and mother in their own ways.

First up, Erykah Badu and Jill Scott.

Erykah Badu and Jill Scott, sharing the spotlight

So much to love about these two. They’re smart, talented, politically conscious, unconventionally beautiful, and have earned plenty of mainstream recognition but choose to stay on the fringe of popular culture.

Also, they’re autonomous women who have opted out of a conventional family unit. Both are unmarried. Badu had son Seven and daughters Puma and Mars from her relationships with André 3000 of OutKast, The D.O.C., and Jay Electronica, respectively. Scott is divorced and welcomed the birth of her first child, Jett, with her boyfriend, Lil John Roberts, last year at the age of 36.

And finally, I love that they’re friends, came up from the Philly “neo-soul” circuit together, and often perform together (as evidenced from the photo above; see also their stirring performance of “You Got Me” on Dave Chappelle’s Block Party). I like to imagine that they hang out together a lot, helping each other write, sing, or think through the struggles and joys of daily life.

Next up, Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon.

The Gordon-Moores, rocking out on "The Gilmore Girls"

After being married to bandmate Thurston Moore for about ten years, Gordon (who kept her name, thank you) gave birth to Coco Hayley Gordon Moore in 1994, thus bringing presumably one of the coolest girls into the world as a result. I like to imagine that Coco was schooling her classmates about Merzbow by the sixth grade. Also, a friend of mine’s sister used to babysit Coco, and says that she is a really nice, well-adjusted kid. Yay!

I like that Kim had Coco — an only child — on her own time and later in life. It probably reminds me of my mom, who had me (and only me) at 36. Plus, Gordon and Moore performed a song with Coco on The Gilmore Girls. How cool is that?

Speaking of cool moms, what about M.I.A., who welcomed her first son Ikhyd into the world with fiancé Benjamin Brewer earlier this year?

AP image of M.I.A. performing "Swagga Like Us" with Kanye West, Lil Wayne, and Jay-Z days before giving birth

Unfortunately, I can’t find a hi-res version of the Grammy performance of T.I.’s “Swagga Like Us”, but I really love it. I love that M.I.A., whose song “Paper Planes” is sampled and provides the song title, opens the performance. I love that she interacts with the other rappers, who seem to be treating her as an equal. I love that the men she shares the stage with, all of whom are African American and thus stigmatized by the racist, sexist stereotype of the wayward, absentee black father, seem to be excited and happy for her. I love that she’s ready-to-burst pregnant in public and is wearing a tight, short, see-through black and white dress, thus confronting and subverting the conception of the sexless matriarch (in fact, she got a lot of flak for the dress; some people dubbed it “slutty” and “trashy”). I also love that she paired the ensemble with sneakers, because pregnant ladies gotta be comfortable. And most of all, I love that we haven’t seen much of baby Ikhyd since he came into the world, suggesting that the family wants their son to grow up a person and not a tabloid ficture.

Another low-key mom is Yoshimi Yokota, legendary drummer of Boredoms and singer/guitarist of OOIOO.

Yoshimi and OOIOO, debating whether or not to spare the rod

Like Gordon, she’s got one daughter, and seems to be pleased with that. But like M.I.A., she’s not forthcoming about her personal life, particularly the family she’s creating for herself. And finally, I love that unlike what we may expect from mom musicians, Yoshimi doesn’t think her entrance into motherhood has changed her music.

And finally, the mother of all cool musician moms, Björk.

Quality time with Björk and son Sindri; image captured from art-gallery.com

So, Björk is interesting for many reasons. Like Badu, she had two children with two different partners (son Sindri with former Sugarcubes bandmate Þór Eldon; daughter Ísadóra with artist Matthew Barney). There’s also an unsual age difference between her children. Sindri was born in 1986, when Björk was 21. Ísadóra was born sixteen years later in 2002. And, despite her diminuitive figure and elfin looks, Björk is fiercely protective of her children and their privacy (anyone remember when Björk went off and beat up a journalist who waved a microphone in Sindri’s face at the airport?). Don’t fuck with mom.

But these moms are just a few examples. Who are your favorite musician moms?

I’m glad you asked.

Sometimes people ask me some of my favorite artists and I end up forgetting some of their names. So, I sat down and tried to remember as many as I could. I am definitely picky when it comes to art and what I like. While I always respect any person making an effort to produce work and be creative and do something that makes them happy, it’s kinda rare for me to really be “moved” by art. There are different reasons why I like each of these artists, whether it be for their actual art or for their concepts or their attitude towards life or maybe they like the same cereal I do. If you want to know why I like a certain artist, I suppose you should just ask…I can talk forever about art. Whatever the case here is the not-all-inclusive list:

doug jeck, ron mueck, miroslav paral, judy fox, peter paul rubens, hans bellmer, beth cavener stichter, justin novak, francis bacon, erwin wurm, bronzini, ray johnson, john de andrea, matthew barney, duane hanson, imre shrammel, jean ipousteguy, sergei isopov, rodin, heironymous bosch, leonardo da vinci, james rosenquist, jean arp, marcel duchamp, hr geiger, bryan crockett, juan munoz, tip toland, lee bontecue, botero
