Here are some of the paintings in my studio right now. 

This painting is in its beginning stages, but I am really into owls right now.  I would LOVE to paint an entire owl series.  I just think of the “wise old owl”.  What insight does he have for me today?  When you paint, you access your right brain voice–your Artist Within.  It is directly connected to your subconscious & your intuition.  With each brushstroke, it is like you are dialing its number.  What does your right brain voice have to say to you?  Paint to find out!

This is a detail of a commission I am creating for a family right now.  I call these my “Family Portraits”.  I just keep layering and layering the colors.  There are no such things as mistakes.  Anything can be fixed.  Hmmmm, just like life!  I am reading in Esther & Jerry Hicks book, The Amazing Power of Deliberate Intent” right now about CONTRAST in our lives. 

“You know that variety and contrast (when things are going GREAT or badly) will cause you to determine the specifics of your personal preferences, and you know that each of those preferences, big or small, will be answered the moment they are born.”  -Esther & Abraham

Does it actually take 8 different point of views to see who assassinated the president?

Moments after he arrives in Spain for a landmark anti terrorism summit, U.S. President Ashton is shot. The 15 minutes leading up to the shooting are rehashed — Rashomon-style — from the perspective of various onlookers: two Secret Service agents (Dennis Quaid and Matthew Fox), a TV reporter (Sigourney Weaver) and a tourist (Forest Whitaker).

I’m not going to lie but the premise is actually quite intriguing. I was looking forward to actually seeing this movie, but it collapsed into car crashes, shoot-outs, and utterly implausible plot developments.

The one thing I liked about the film was its style. It revealed something new at just about every vantage point, and sometimes things we didn’t understand the first time, we understand somehow later on.

Then, after awhile the flashbacks really start to be annoying. I felt like I was watching Groundhog Day by the 5th flashback, cause to be truly honest, this film has way too much plot and not enough action to let us have fun with. Instead we always have to think about whats going on at that exact moment.

The one big twist to the whole film is that the president that gets shot isn’t really the real president. Yes, it’s one of those dumb look alike twists. I found this completely stupid and just put in to give William Hurt some lines to work with. Also, the cliches come out almost every step of the way. You have lines like “but you gave me your word”, and I’m thinking how could they give you their word, their terrorists!!!

The cast is well-picked but not the best acted. William Hurt does an OK job as the president, Forrest Whittaker probably gives the best performance as a lovable camera man. Dennis Quaid and Matthew Fox probably play some of the dumbest security guards ever who ditch out lines so bad that I won’t even try to restate them.

Consensus: Though with an intriguing premise, Vantage Point turns into a loud, dumb, and stiffly acted gimmick of a film.

I want to go to there.

Last night I played for a corporate meeting in someone’s mansion high in the hills.  The meeting was for an organization of expats all from a particular foreign country (which I won’t name) now living in the US.  There was a panel of 3 very high-powered businesspeople (the likes of whom had held personal business meetings with people like ex-President Clinton and the President of Liberia.)  Towards the end of the talk I had developed a rancid taste in my mouth.  Let’s call this group of people who were from a particular country ‘The Greens’.  The Greens went on to talk about the traits of “their people” in regard to business and life.  The more they talked the more they seemed to be truly separating themselves – and believe me, there were 4 or 5″Blues” in the room who were clearly shifty, offended or uncomfortable.  “The Greens see through bullshit”, ”The Greens are harder working and have little patience for incompetence or people who need to be coddled.”  It was clear to me that they really deemed themselves superior.

For the love of God, when is nationalism going to go away? It is an archaic idea and has long since outlived its function.  It is one thing to be proud of where you’re from and to have confidence, but as they continued to speak this confidence quickly bled across the line into arrogance, a superiority complex and an inherent “us vs. them” mentality.  So many countries have this issue – we all carry this tumor in our own ways.  I once lived with a first generation American (her parents were Chinese) and she readily admitted that the Chinese think they’re smarter than everyone else.  But she seemed to say it matter-of-factly, almost as if she believed it to be partly true, having been so deeply ingrained by her parents.  Please tell me how can one country (which is nothing more than a longitude and latitude on the map) own personal traits?  This is so ignorant.  Matthew Fox a modern day mystic and author once wrote in his book “Wrestling with the Prophets”:

“For there is no such thing as a Lutheran sun and a Taoist moon, a Jewish ocean and a Roman Catholic forest.”

Thank you, Mystic Matthew! By the same token how can Chinese own the copyright on smart, New Zealanders on entertaining and entrepreneurial, Japanese on innovative or Germans on being organized??  This is ridiculous.  Those traits are in and belong to all human beings and no one gets to claim a patent on any of them to the exclusion of others.  This type of thinking just like fervent association with any religion is the illusion that separates.  And people seem to really enjoy propagating such illusions for their own egos – whether out of insecurity or a need to oppress in order to control and to prevail, it doesn’t matter.  

Even though my exposure to this thinking towards the end of the night just seemed like a mild irritant to me, I can clearly see the grave danger of this seed-level thinking.  I daresay that some of the pronouncements made in that room about how ‘Greens’ are, would not have been so openly shared in mixed company (say of Blues, Reds, Browns and Yellows.)  What was slightly disturbing was that it was a fairly homogenous group of people so they could speak freely without censoring their true feelings, they were wearing no burkas of political correctness.  For example, on the ride home ‘The Green’ who was taking me home was having a conversation with ‘The Other Green’ in the front seat about her husband always talking about ‘The Bloody Blue’s.’  According to her eyes, I am ‘A Blue’ and naturally have those traits.  Realizing what she had said, she quickly backtracked and made the qualifier that I was welcome in her home because it would be nice to have a “positive Blue influence” in the house.  Ummmm…..WTF!?

It is this nationalism and us vs. them mentality and this very kind of thinking that sent millions of people to the ovens.  It was the seed of the German thought that they truly believed with every fiber of their being (at least some of them) that they were indeed superior – they were poisoned and brainwashed.  This type of illusory thinking is learned. To have this type of belief and put people in boxes is not only ignorant but incredibly dangerous.  We need to start ripping down these barriers and walls; the timing is overdue.  At the risk of sounding cliche We Are All One.  As long as someone is trumpeting a particular religious sect or positive quality with their country, race, or group of people then We Are Not One, but we are an amalgamation of several little boxes pushed up against each other, the walls of which are not only illusory but completely susceptible to abuse of oppression and ego-centric thinking and behavior which always separates.

We all still do the box thing; let’s keep tearing down those walls and open our mouths to break down illusions when it would seem unpopular, politically incorrect or provocative.  Superiority complexes in groups of people are frightful ways to behave and wholly unnecessary.  Such beliefs are  deeply rooted in fear and an ’other than’ and us vs. them.

The solution then is to realize that when we dig a hole in our side of the boat it’s going to affect the person on the other end – oh yeah, and us too.  We’re not doing anyone anyone favors by siphoning ourselves off into categories and proclaiming particular labels or qualities onto ourselves because we happen to live at 41 S, 174 E on the globe and our neighbor happens to live at 64 N, 26 E.  It is easy to keep the illusion of separation with our languages, cultures, man-made borders, fears, wars and media.  Throw joyous or tragic circumstances at any human being and you will find that he will react and respond the same.  We all have deep reserves of courage, genius, creativity, perserverance, honesty, and tenacity, just as we all have smaller ways of reacting.  What we need to remember is that 30 or 40,000 feet up in a plane instantly takes that illusion away, and we remember how small we can be on the ground (both literally and figuratively) and that we really are  One.

LIFE IS DANQ

Last night I went to my first show since I moved to Vegas. KÀ is a show by Cirque du Soleil at the MGM Grand. Created and directed by Robert Lepage, the show and the theater cost $220 million to develop.

Even though I was pretty lost as far as the plot was concerned, The production and theatrics was AMZING. KÀ lacks a conventional stage with a permanent floor; instead, two giant moving platforms and five smaller lifts and platforms appear to float through a bottomless space. A narrow boardwalk separates the audience from a deep abyss where the stage floor would normally be. From the stage level of the boardwalk up to the high grid is 98 feet, and the pit drops 51 feet below, amounting to a total of some 15 stories from the highest ceiling grid to the lowest floor level. The opening width and depth of the performance area are each 120 feet. This enormous performance space is reconfigured with each scene change by the complex movements of the show’s lifts and platforms.

Overall the show was DANQ and would highly recommend seeing it while you are in Vegas.

Neste quinto diário, o Lost Countdown relembra o primeiro flashback centrado no personagem central da série Lost: Dr. Jack Shepard. É aqui que temos uma pequena amostra de quem era o líder dos Losties, antes da queda na ilha.

É um episódio que poderíamos resumir com os seguintes ingredientes: emoção, emoção e emoção. Sim, porque a história de Jack, antes da chegada na ilha, não é bela.

O triste relacionamento com seu pai, também médico, nos é detalhado em seus últimos momentos, até quando Christian Shepard nos deixa dessa para uma melhor.

O que aconteceu neste episódio?

Temos a primeira morte dentro da ilha devido aos perigos que a vida selvagem oferece. Joana X, um dos sobreviventes/figurantes, tem seu momento de “glória” ao morrer depois de um afogamento.

Jack não aceita muito bem a morte, culpando-se. Ele havia salvado Boone, que se afogou depois de ter tentado salvar Joana.

E é nesse clima de culpa e novas responsabilidades, que temos os flashbacks do garoto e adulto Jack mostrados. Principal lição desses momentos: “Não banque o héroi, assim você não correrá riscos” diz Christian (vivido pelo brilhante John Terry) para seu filho.

E em “White Rabbit”, parece que Jack entendeu bem a lição, ignorando os problemas dos sobreviventes na ilha e correndo atrás de um vulto de seu falecido pai.

Sim, Jack estava naquele avião, pois trazia o caixão de seu pai, que morrera em Sidney, sozinho e alcoólotra.

E é o fantasma (?) de seu pai que resolve um dos muitos problemas do herói Jack: a falta de água no acampamento. Isso porque depois de perseguir o vulto, o médico é levado a uma fonte de água, com alguns destroços do avião (entre eles o caixão de seu pai… VAZIO!)

Notas do diário #5

Sawyer: Esse perde o amigo, mas não a piada (Crédito: ABC/MARIO PEREZ)

- Sawyer começa a roubar a cena com suas clássicas ironias. Depois de ter guardado o restante da água de todo o grupo sem avisar ninguém, Boone é acusado de ser ladrão. Só depois que Jack o defende, os Losties seguram os ânimos. Sawyer perde o amigo, mas não perde a piada e solta para Boone: “Como você se sente conseguindo ser mais odiado até do que eu?”

- A presença do vulto que é a imagem do pai de Jack sugere diversas possibilidades: um fantasma? alucinação de Jack? Ou o mais absurdo: O cara ressurgiu dos mortos? É, vocês perceberão que em Lost, até esta 5ª temporada, nenhuma das opções anteriores pode ser desconsiderada!

Ponto forte

Sem dúvidas, a conversa de Jack e John Locke na floresta é mítica para a série. Ao dizer que seria louco por contar algo considerado impossível (as aparições do pai), Jack é retrucado pelo carequinha. Locke lembra que naquela ilha, nada é impossível. Sim amigos, é o desafio da Fé e a Ciência anunciado logo no quinto episódio, neste incrível diálogo!

P.S.: Vale um para a clássica frase de Jack, depois de defender Boone da revolta do restante do grupo, após o caso das garrafas d’água: “Se não conseguirmos viver juntos, então todos nós morreremos sozinhos”

Ponto fraco

Boone, o personagem. Sim, ele começou camarada o episódio ao tentar salvar Joana, a figurante. Porém, depois de quase se afogar, deu chilique com Jack, o cara que salvou sua pele, e teve a estúpida idéia de guardar a água sem o consentimento de outras pessoas do grupo. Muito “loser”. Esse foi o Boone!

Does anyone else remember the 1990s TV drama Party of Five? I used to LOVE it! It featured a pre-’Ghost Whisperer’ Jennifer Love Hewitt and the effortlessly gorgeous Matthew Fox from Lost, as Charlie. Oh now you remember, eh?

I was browsing Freshome and came across the real-life Party of Five house! I must say, i don’t remember it being quite so glam? (Maybe it was all teen angst-filled plotlines.)

However, it’s certainly a dream home. Large windows and pale walls keep it light, airy and endlessly spacious, while mahogony furnishings and smart furniture provide oodles of charisma (much like Matthew Fox!).
