Tonight is the night of great shows! Law & Order - NBC – http://www.nbc.com/Law_and_Order

Tonight is the night of great shows!

Law & Order - NBC – http://www.nbc.com/Law_and_Order/

Dollhouse - FOX – http://www.fox.com/dollhouse/

Medium - CBS – http://www.cbs.com/primetime/medium/

Stargate Universe - SyFy - http://www.syfy.com/universe/index.php

Psych – USA Network – http://www.usanetwork.com/series/psych/index.html

Dollhouse will not be on this week! Sorry about the mixup! It returns next week! But in the meantime… Be sure to watch it on Fancast or Hulu, or at FOX.com for that matter! Let’s save the show Whedon-fighters! Viva la Dollhouse!

On Law & Order tonight:

When Larry Johnson arrives home from picking up his adopted, physically disabled children from school, he discovers his wife’s dead body on the floor of their home. Detectives Cyrus Lupo Kevin Bernard question Vaughn, who explains that he and his wife had adopted a child with special needs and felt it was their calling, so they adopted nine more children. While the detectives question the children for suspects and a motive, they uncover an affair and an offer for the Vaughn family to appear in a reality show causing tension in the household and with another family.

So, this week’s episode is ripped from the headlines… Expect that the king of losers, Jon Gosselin, hasn’t killed his wife, Kate, yet. Here’s to hoping this week’s episode is better than last week’s!

Then on Dollhouse (which will get at least 13 episodes this season!):

Sierra’s introduction to the Dollhouse is revealed when she faces her connection to the Rossum Corporation, a link that leads to obsession and murder. Matthew Harding: Keith Carradine.

While some episodes of this weird show are better than others, I am really hoping that it gets better. Keith Carradine will be a nice addition in this week’s episodes, you really can’t go wrong with a Carradine!

And on our favorite psychic show, Medium:

Allison starts having visions of strange symbols that may hold the key to learning the identity of a notorious serial killer.

Nothing is better in a murder mystery than a serial killer! Although for some reason, Allison never trusts her dreams when they always seem to be pretty spot on, every week. Come on Allison, I know that Joe is the best TV husband and all, but seriously… You are interpreting those dreams right! Jeez!

As for our weekly Stargate fix, on Stargate Universe:

When the Destiny s power reserves drop to a critical level, the crew is ordered to use power for essential services only, but the rationing isn’t enough to keep Rush from announcing that the all the crew on board will die within a few days.

I am just not a fan of desert planets, so as long as we don’t land on another one of those for the rest of the season I am all for the show to continue. And I am totally loving Eli!

And on the Fall season finale of Psych:

While working on a case involving an ice cream truck, Shawn stumbles into something much bigger and deadly

Somehow this is is sounding reminiscent of The Goonies… Chunk locked in the ice cream freezer with the stiff… I am so mad that the season is nearing a close, but I am hearing that it is returning in the early ’10’s and that Alli Sheedy will be reprising her role!

What are YOU watching tonight??

I’ve just read some very interesting news; one of the cast of Dexter is due to appear for two

I’ve just read some very interesting news; one of the cast of Dexter is due to appear for two episodes of Dollhouse’s second season. Find out who it is and what their character will be….

Keith Carradine has been signed up to appear as Matthew Harding, a powerful businessman, according to Ausiello. As he says, there are no further details at the moment, but can we speculate already? Could he be a Rossum Corporation/Dollhouse bigwig? The double appearance suggests he’s probably more than an engagement-of-the-week character.

I’ve enjoyed Carradine’s work on Dexter, and can see him fitting very well into the Dollhouse ensemble.

A presto!

Remember the French New Wave? Remember Dogma95? Do you remember that feeling you had when all the s

Remember the French New Wave? Remember Dogma95? Do you remember that feeling you had when all the stale commercial rules about filmmaking you have been swallowing all you life were shredded in front of your eyes by a pure cinematic moment? For me, it was watching a crappy 3/4 inch video tape of Bergman’s PERSONA in a windowless classroom as I was hiding out from a hot Texas afternoon in the 1970’s. That film wacked me out forever… there it was, the idea that cinema can be so much more than what we were being fed by the status quo.

Years later I had the pleasure of to having dinner with Liv Ullmann in Chicago when my film STILL BREATHING was honored with a special screening at The Chicago Film Festival. As you probably know, Ms. Ullmann starred in PERSONA. It told her about my experience with PERSONA and she said “I had no idea what I was doing… I was just doing what I was told. It was all Ingmar.” Well, I don’t discount Ms. Ullmann’s considerable talent, but the film is a close to Pure Cinema as there was in the 1960’s (It was released in 1966). I could go on… but maybe I’ll save that for a future post.

Fast forward to 2008. Millions of aspiring filmmakers and film fans own digital “video” cameras that in many ways are superior to the cameras that shot GONE WITH THE WIND. So filmmaking is finally in the hands of the common “unconnected” artist. We can create films in the same way as we can all write a novel. All it takes is talent, craft, determination, vision and grit. The future Coppola talked about 20 years ago is here… there is no reason the next CITIZEN KANE can’t be made by a “civilian” with a DV camera and a laptop.

So, uh… where is this film? Or where is a hint of it at least? Instead, the next generation of filmmakers seem tragically obsessed with genre and parody.

Before I go too far off on a rant… my point is that occasionally I see something that truly inspires me… and fits the new dynamics (global, social, viral and otherwise) of the New Digital Cinema. This brings me to the unique simplicity and power of Matthew Harding’s “Where the hell is Matt?” videos. You have seen them – a guy dancing the same dance all over the world, simply shot, authentic and poetic and down-to-earth all at the same time. His newest version, the 2008 clip, is the rare kind of pure cinema that produces a palette of emotions inside of me (all good) that are pretty hard to describe.

Hey, the New Digital Cinema doesn’t have to be a genre film or a parody. It doesn’t have to wear superficiality like a badge of honor. It can be about TRUTH… something every artist is trying to get at.

Where the Hell is Matt?

All attempts to embed the video from the above link have failed. This means that I have to simply implore you to click it and watch.

“But why should I, Mike? I’m a busy person. I’ve got a lot to do. I came to your site, and I’ll be damned if I get whisked away in a storm of hyperlinks!”

Settle down, imaginary person holding a contrasting viewpoint! I’ll explain.

The video there is from Matthew Harding. I must say that I know little to nothing about the guy, except what I’ve learned from watching the video.

Apparently, Matt has traveled all around the world, and done a little jig-type dance at each of the 42 countries he visited. And even better, he invited those around him to join!

The result is one of the most heartwarming things I’ve seen in a while. Men, women, children from all different cultures in all different parts of the world join Matt in dancing for a few moments without any music or form, without any rhyme or reason to it. They just dance!

The fact that I love the idea of this dance-adventure may surprise a younger Mike.

You see, until about last year, I used to say I hated dancing. I couldn’t stand it. I also couldn’t dance (which I readily admitted). I just didn’t see the point in doing all of these dances, or moving your body really.

I would say that I would only dance if I were “joking around” or when “I didn’t have to be serious.”

About a year ago I started going to see Gogol Bordello shows, and then everything started changing. Gogol Bordello is a self-proclaimed Gypsy Punk band. Everyone at their shows jump up and down, just letting loose and dancing.

They don’t have a format to their dancing. You just move your body and smile. It’s a community of laughter, where a kid with a mohawk can wrap his arm around the shoulder of a 280 pound muscular athlete and dance together.

It’s all about releasing yourself from all the expectations that come with being human in our modern day and age. But it didn’t always use to be this way.

There was a time when you couldn’t be good or bad at dancing. There was a time when anyone and everyone can, should, and would dance together. There was a time that dancing didn’t just mean getting up to dance to Cotton Eyed Joe at a wedding.

People would just grab instruments, start playing, dancing, and drinking for days.

Gogol Bordello made an anachronism out of me by placing my modern self back into this world. And I loved every second of it.

I started saying I would only dance at Gogol Bordello shows. Still claiming when I didn’t have to “be serious.” A month or so ago, I said this to Katie, who, with her way of finding the sunlight hiding behind my dunes of self-doubt, replied with something that really made me think:

“When do you need to be serious when you’re dancing?”

I didn’t have an answer. I’ve never danced in a situation where I had to “be serious” before. Even if I was slow dancing I didn’t have “be serious.” I just had to follow my instincts.

It made me look back on the past year and realized that I enjoyed dancing whenever I got the chance to do so. As long as I was in good company, I had a great time. A change had been made, and younger Mike would be very confused by my current attitudes on movin’ to the music.

But younger Mike definitely wouldn’t ever be confused as to why I loved that video of Matthew Harding’s.

It’s about bringing people together. No matter what age you are, sex, no matter your skin color, your religion, your ethnicity, what country you live in, what pants you’re wearing, the hat you have on, whether you have glasses or not, if you went to college or you didn’t, junkie or beauty-queen, president or pauper, there’s no damn reason in this whole wide world why we can’t all dance together.

Thank you for helping us remember that, Matthew.

Keep the love alive, everyone.

- Mike

A weekend ago my girlfriend showed me a clip of a guy dancing at various locations around the world either by himself or joined by others. She loved it. I thought to myself that it is a cool idea but have grown tired watching people’s good ideas. Skepticism aside, I sat down by myself to watch it and was captivated to say the least. I looked up the dancer’s background (a college dropout who actually danced exclusively by himself at the foreign locales in a first video, both videos were paid for by Stride Gum, which I had never heard of until then) and contemplated the power of a good idea. Since then, I’ve been meaning to put up a post and wax poetic about it: dancing, traveling, shared experiences etc. some sort of epiphany-based, culturely-speaking musing but the video has become quite the phenomenon (so I’m sure there are now plenty of those, if you are looking for that at least get it from the guy who actually did it) and just yesterday NYT did a great piece on it. Video is below. Here is a link to a hi-def version . Take a few minutes to check it out. Make sure you have the volume up. The music adds a great deal.

I had to do a double take when reading a post on BoingBoing this morning about the guy who does silly dances around the world. Hadn’t I seen that already, like, a couple years ago? Why in the hell is BoingBoing posting that?

Where the Hell is Matt? (2008) from Matthew Harding on Vimeo.

Which goes to show you why it’s important to actually read the words that accompany the pretty video embeds (and the words in the embed). Turns out, this is the third dancing-around-the-world video by Matthew Harding, and the second one that he didn’t have to pay for.

Nice work if you can get it.

The quick story: In 2003 Harding quit his job and and wandered around Asia. During this trip, a travel buddy suggested Matt do his signature bad dance. This video made its way onto the Internet, where many people watched it.

In fact, so many people watched it that Stride gum offered to send him on another trip around the world to do his jig. So in 2006 Harding took his moves to 39 different countries on seven continents.

Not satisfied with getting Stride to pay for one trip around the globe, Harding went back to the gum company to ask them to fund another trip, and this time, he invited people at the places he visits to dance on camera with him. The result is at the top of this post.

Now Harding has had not one, but two adventures of a lifetime thanks to a video camera and some very silly dance steps. So what’s the takeaway of this story? Without getting all The Secret-y on you, anything is possible. And with this latest installment watched more than 4 million times since June 20th, Harding might want to pack his bags.
