World War II: a critical turning point arrives when a German U-boat floundering in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean radios for help. The message is received by both German and US navies and the US embark on a daring mission to recover the code machine aboard the U-boat: the famed Enigma. Disguising themselves as a German rescue submarine, the crew of the S-33 sail toward U-571 in a race against time to capture the machine. All goes smoothly until the real German rescue U-boat arrives and blows the S-33 out of the water. The survivors must scramble aboard the crippled U-571 and fight for their lives to save the code machine and turn the tide of the war.

Thrilling, and entirely fictitious, World War Two action-adventure that hits all its entertainment targets. It doesn’t really mean anything and, despite being a film about submarines, there is no depth to the screenplay. Instead, a whole pile of WWII clichés have been trotted out and presented for the audience’s entertainment as they revisit old friends: the Executive Officer (Matthew McConaughey) passed over for a captaincy, the salty sea dog (Harvey Keitel), the doomed best friend (Jon Bon Jovi), the scum-of-the-earth Gerry (Thomas Kretschmann), the enemy inability to hit a barn door at two paces, the heroes ability to hit targets despite adverse circumstances, a token black man making token black man comments and I could probably dig up a few more. Nevertheless, Mostow ensures the film remains uncommonly focused and, critically, extremely thrilling.

This movie contains mild swear words and graphic gun violence, war violence.

Mostow’s undoubted ability does not lie in his screenwriting talents, indeed his screenplay for both this and his equally excellent Breakdown showed periods of uncertainty in pace and forward movement.

No, Mostow’s ability comes in creating good, old-fashioned tension and excitement with well-crafted action sequences. He creates a number of breath-holding scenes here, with the undoubted highlights being the two major depth charge sequences. He builds the scene with a combination of sound effects and occasional underwater visual effects but the excitement, created almost exclusively using sound effects, at the culmination of these scenes – where loads of depth charges go off in quick succession – is astonishing.

Performances from all are fine. McConaughey is rather good and has, in the eyes of critics and presumably movie producers, got his career back on track. He had the equal misfortune and fortune to work with three of Hollywood’s top directors in film’s that were generally lukewarmly received by both critics and audiences alike. Not me, however. I thought that Steven Spielberg’s Amistad, Robert Zemeckis’ Contact and Ron Howard’s Edtv were all thoroughly brilliant films and that McConaughey was excellent in them. Harvey Keitel is rather good as the afore-mentioned salty sea dog. Bill Paxton is inconsistent: generally he is trademark bland but he really nails the scene where he tells McConaughey’s disappointed Executive Officer that he needs to be able to instantly sacrifice his best friend’s life for the sake of the boat in order to qualify as a submarine captain. McConaughey’s realisation that Paxton’s Captain is right is also well-acted.

Tonight was the third annual CNN Heroes: An All Star Tribute hosted by Anderson Cooper. While the winner was announced earlier in the week, this show is regularly a parade of amazing, ordinary people. The focus is on Real Action Heroes – those people who have seen a need and taken action.

Larry King presented an introduction to the show with a series of questions delivered to various celebrities. Matthew McConaughey presented family members as his heroes, as do many of the participants in the Hero Construction Company presentations. He said fictional heroes are fine if you can pull something in from their character or story. He thinks circumstances are key to heroism – they’re not born.

Tyra Banks suggested that we look at our hero’s path so we can copy it and make it our own. She also reminded us that heroes are human – not perfect.

Shakira listed her heroes as Harriet Tubman, Elizabeth II, and educators in Third World countries. She thinks education to every child should be our goal – it’s the perfect strategy to eradicate poverty. She said a hero is someone who never gives up the fight, believes in something and defends it. They must be brave and speak for those without a voice. She thought each one of us has a hero inside – we just need to let it out so it can manifest itself.

George Lopez said a hero is someone who takes time for someone else – his was a teacher in high school. He thinks heroes aren’t deliberately acting to be a hero.

Larry King inexplicably kept bringing up baseball players in his various interviews. I hope he was using them as contrasts, rather than examples.

My garb is here, my garb is here!!

Monky Goodness

Okay so not exactly awe inspiring with a giant dish of kitty crunchies in the background like that but you get the idea. I’m pretty excited to wear it to the next event, which will probably be 12th Night. It’s damn hot, that robe. It’s really a quality piece of garb and arrived expediently. A friend of mine back on the East Coast saw a picture of the robe, and asked what the SCA was. She seemed pretty interested so I gave her links to the Canton she resides in. I hope she gets in touch with their Chatelaine and checks out an event.

Gotta love my best friend for making the drive over here yesterday to bring it to me. She was rewarded with pie and ice cream. And wine.

Then we watched Beauty & The Beast. Is it just us or are Disney flicks funnier with alcohol? Maybe it’s just us. We were both agreeing that if we lived in an enchanted castle it would be kind of scary. What’s enchanted, what’s not? What was a person and what is simply magical? The Beast breaks a lot of stuff that seems like both.

Deleted Scene from Beauty & The Beast (as told by Gaynip & Dutchess)

The Beast: …We’re running out of chairs.

Lumiere: Well, Master, maybe if you stopped throwing them.

Mrs. Potts: <Crying> You killed Susan! She had 3 days left until retirement!

The whole movie is kind of corny. I especially love the end where The Beast is supposedly dead and Belle confesses her love. This sets off a magical transformation that not only changes The Beast into The Prince but restores his life. I mean, you can’t really miss it. But Belle (who’s supposed to be the intelligent one) has to touch his girly hair, look into his eyes before she exclaims “It IS you.” I imagine that elsewhere in the Kingdom, the Enchantress is grimacing/facepalming at that.

Okay, I have to share a few things…the lady who does my NARL workout has no clue that I’m gay. I’m not ashamed of it or anything, but I just think it would make things less awkward if she didn’t know. One day she is going on and on about Matthew Mcconaughey and how she wouldn’t kick him out of bed for eating crackers. I forget myself for a moment and exclaim “I would!” which earns me a look. I get kinda nervous and add, “You know, I can’t stand crumbs in the bed.” Office Mom says that a normal person would have just said, “I don’t like blonde guys” but no, I had to say something weird.

So yesterday, Horrible Date Guy asks me what my MSN “ARGH” is all about. I didn’t want to tell him the real answer and not knowing what to say, offer up this little gem “The pharmacy was all out of Preparation H.” At least he laughed.

Friday we had a bunch of kids in the office, two I know and two I didn’t. One of the new kids asked me about my duck keychain (black duck with green skull/crossbones painted on it) and what the “green things were”. I didn’t know what to say, they’re not my kids and pretty small ones at that.

Winn: What are those green things on your duck?

Mom 1: It’s a skull and crossbones.

Winn: What does that mean?

Me: …Er…the duck put them there so no one would eat him. It means he’s poisonous.

Winn: Hahahaha silly duck.

At this point I’m getting arched looks from 3 mom’s.

Office Mom: Are you SURE you don’t want kids.

Terrible, terrible. I don’t know what’s come over me with the kid thing lately. I swear it’s because I’m not on the pill, it’s been the first time I’ve been off it in about…5 years maybe? Maybe my body went “Oh yeah, we can make those!”. Cortejo says it’s just ovulating and it shouldn’t last longer than 45 hours. I want to believe that’s all it is, but it’s been really bad lately. Really, really bad. :/ As if life wasn’t complicated enough without wanting to have kids. I can just imagine my parents reaction to that bit of news.

Found my missing item. Relief.

*”The reason most people never reach their goals is that they don’t define them, or ever serio

*”The reason most people never reach their goals is that they don’t define them, or ever seriously consider them as believable or achievable. Winners can tell you where they are going, what they plan to do along the way, and who will be sharing the adventure with them.”*
Denis Watley

Setting goals is so critical to achieving and maintaining a successful life. Though some goals may, at times, seem unattainable, I believe that any ambition can be achieved with a set plan and drive to attain it. Sure, we all have had unrealistic goals and may even go chasing after them for a short while. I once had the dream of becoming a Broadway star belting out those high notes in Wicked’s “Defying Gravity” and one day becoming, as Mary Catherine Gallagher would say, “a SUPERSTAR!” But, in my heart I knew I never possessed enough talent or drive to make this dream a reality. However, I have set, reached, and surpassed many realistic dreams over my twenty-three years on this planet. As a nerdy student, I wanted to get the best grades possible in school. So, for many years I worked meticulously studying at night, asking for assistance from my teachers and peers when I needed it, and doing my schoolwork to the best of my ability. As a high school freshman, I wanted so badly to become a high school cheerleader, so I practiced for weeks before the first try-out attempting to have flawless Herkes and Russians and to perfect each cheer’s rhythm and hand motions. In college, I wanted to become a teacher so I spend four years at an institution mastering teaching pedagogy and preparing myself for the world of education. For each of these short-term goals, I crafted plans and constructed steps, much like the blueprints of a house, on how I would accomplish each goal. However, no strategy could have ever prepared me for the sweaty, giddy hormone-driven gossip factories that are my middle school students! But, I still love them anyway!

As discussed in my previous post, “Giving Thanks”, some people go their entire lives never finding something that they are truly passionate about. They get up each day with a chip on their shoulder, return to jobs they loath, lead lives they hate, and are never truly happy. They never set goals for themselves for fear of failure or because they are unsure as to what their purpose in life really is. They may have desires and hopes in life but never have enough drive or know how to go about making those dreams a reality. These people attend their nine-to-five jobs, do what is expected of them (never more and never less), and usually never pursue anything of great meaning to them. I could imagine leading a life without passion or purpose would be very unrewarding and unfulfilling. I never want to be a person who gets stuck in the day-to-day grind never reaching for something more. There is so much more to life than a steady paycheck and a mundane life full of fruitless routine.

I truly believe that if you want something bad enough and if you work with all of your heart and soul, never giving up, that you can make any distant dream you have an existing reality.

I am a firm believer in the notion that we create our own destiny. No one is going to make your dreams come true but Y-O-U. Too often people go about their daily lives waiting for the right time to make their dreams come true. They believe when they get that promotion at work, or when the kids are in high school, or when they have enough money that then they can start really living the lives they want to lead. These people go on to realize (as much of their life has already passed them by) that there is no perfect time when all the stars will align for them to begin following their real dreams and passions in life. The time is now. Life is too short to wait for a perfect time that will likely never come. Like Matthew McConaughey says, ‘Just Keep Livin’. If you do, I promise your life will feel so much more fulfilling.

I feel so fortunate to have found my true passions in life at such a young age. For as long as I can remember I have always had three life goals (as well as other smaller goals that I set on a more short-term level) and know that once I have these things and have accomplished my life goals that my life will be complete. One is already beginning to come true while the other three feel as far away as the Milky Way (and no, I am not talking about the chocolately-nougaty goodness wrapped inside the brown and green packaging). Though that would be a nice reward. Reach a goal, get chocolate! Dear God, please make mine peanut butter m&ms!

Life Goal 1- Become a Tenured Language Arts Teacher: Since I was seventeen years old (and maybe even earlier as I played teacher as a child during each summer vacation) I knew I wanted to become an English teacher and share my love of literature and learning with children. With the guidance of my main inspiration, my very own high school English teacher Mrs. Tutt, I embarked on the journey of becoming a teacher. I spent four years reading, researching, and studying teacher practices. I spent numerous hours in clinical placements observing and instructing in different classroom settings. I spent nine weeks in a student teaching placement taking the driver’s seat as a full-time teacher. I prepared my own lessons, taught my own classes, graded millions upon billions of assignments (or so it seems) and assimilated into the teaching world. All of this prepared me for my life as a future educator. I loved every minute of student teaching from teaching content, getting to know my students, and even to those dreaded parent phone calls. I knew within the first few weeks, that this was what I was meant to do in life. I have been blessed to be able to make my dream of becoming an educator a reality the past few years. After graduating from Minnesota State University, Mankato in the fall of 2008, I was immediately offered a teaching job at the high school in which I student taught. It was truly a dream come true. I’ve never been happier then the first day I stepped through Hopkins High School’s doors as a licensed educator. I love being a teacher and inspiring, helping, and being a part of my student’s lives. I look forward to going to work everyday, hearing “Hi, Ms. Topp” in the hallways, and teaching my students. I think all of this is so very important. Since we spend a significant amount of our adult lives working to support our needs and wants in life, I think having a job you love and look forward to going to is so essential. I couldn’t imagine going to a job I detest day-in and day-out. I feel so lucky to have found a career that gives me so much joy and fulfillment.

Though I have now found “My Place In This World”, my journey is just beginning. Being a relatively new and young teacher in this economy has already been very difficult. At the end of the last school year, I was let go from my teaching position due to budget cuts. I was devastated. I searched and searched for a new job that never came. I applied to hundreds of school and interviewed for very few positions. I began this school year as a substitute teacher. Thankfully, about two weeks into my substitute positions I was offered a job (or a series of jobs strung together to equal a full time job) back at Hopkins. It felt so good to be back at the school that I loved so much and never wanted to leave. I felt valued and appreciated as I spoke with other educators who recommended me for the positions being offered. I felt worthy. Through this experience I have expanded my first life goal. I began the 2009-2010 school year working with English Language Learners. Initially, the idea freaked me out! All of these children not only speak different languages but some of them know very little to no English… How would I ever reach or teach them? I wasn’t sure I was cut out to work with ELL students but I gave it a try. Any job is better than no job, right? Especially in my dream district! It was a lot easier than I anticipated and I now have found another passion in life. I want to return to school not only for my Master’s Degree but also to get a second licensure in ESL/ELL. I guess my goals associated with my career have and will continue to grow and change as I am exposed to more of the joys of teaching. Now, after two years of teaching, my first life goal has become three-fold: a-become a tenured Language Arts teacher, b- obtain my ESL/ELL licensure, and c- go back to school to acquire my Master’s Degree in Education. Eventually, I want to get my Doctorate Degree, too, but that goal hasn’t come to the forefront of my mind just yet.

Life Goals 2/3- Become a Wife and Mother: My second and third life goals go hand-in-hand, quite literally through marriage. When I picture my future I have always seen myself as a mother waiting in the kitchen of my cute little house with the pink picket fence waiting for little Susie and Sammy to get home from school. We’d talk about their day as I make dinner waiting for the love of my life to return home from his day at the office. We’d eat dinner together as a family, end the night watching a movie, and live the fairy tale life. Okay, so maybe my dreams are really not that Stepford Wife-ish but you get the picture. I want to be the supportive, caring wife and loving mother. I want a family. Growing up, I always enjoyed babysitting and caring for the younger children in my neighborhood. I remember summer days scraping together money from my piggy bank or the bin of change in my parent’s closet so I could ride my bike up to the convenience store a few blocks from my home to buy kool-aid, mac and cheese, and candy for my sisters and other kids who happened to be at our house that day. Being the oldest child of three girls, I always felt like a second mother to my sisters growing up. I felt responsible for their happiness and well-being. In many ways, even though they are now grown women, I still do. Maybe that is one of the reasons I became a teacher. I like the thought of someone needing or depending on me- even if it is just for a grade, help with homework, or someone to talk to about the latest GLEE or Gossip Girl episode. I can’t wait to be married and have someone to come home to at the end of the day and start a family with. I look forward to the day when I say, “I do” in a beautiful white gown and commit myself to my husband. I know the feminists of the world may gasp at the thought of needing another person to feel fulfilled but I truly believe that through marriage a person becomes absolute. I know that one person is not able to make you fulfilled 100% of the time but through marriage you make a partnership to love and cherish one person for the rest of your life despite your or their shortcomings. What can be more fulfilling than that? Even if your hubby does leave the toilet seat up, watches sports all Sunday afternoon, and works until late evening most nights? I’d trade in singledom for a sports-watching workaholic any day of the week!

I also can’t wait to start a family. I have loved being an older sister (not only to my sisters but also to their friends). There is nothing better than holding a baby in your arms as they sleep, or when a kid looks up and smiles at you, or being told that a child that admires you loves you. I can imagine that these feelings would be even better if they were your own children. I can’t wait to play Barbies with my daughter or go to my son’s sporting events and cuddle up reading a fairy tale or some superhero book at the end of the night. I have the mom gene (no, I won’t be wearing “Mom Jeans” ick!) and I look forward to holding my own miracle in my arms someday. I’m not sure I have met the man I am going to marry yet (and if I have, I certainly don’t know it’s him), but I know God will lead us to each other when the time is right. In all honesty, I think I’ve always been ready for these two life goals and long for them more than the others. I may not be ready for children this year or the next but I know once I find my future husband that these life goals will all fall right into place like Cinderella’s glass slipper.

Life Goal 4- Change The World: I just recently realized my fourth, and final, life goal. I want to change the world. I know this seems like a grandiose idea and an utterly impossible notion but I think I can do it. I don’t mean that I am going to be the next Mother Teresa or Mahatma Gandhi, but who knows? All I do know is that I want to leave this world a better place simply by being in it. I don’t think this world, other people, or God owe me (or anyone else for that matter) anything. It is quite the opposite actually. I know some people feel a sense of entitlement or that the world owes them something if they have gone through some sort of hardship or their lives don’t work out the way they had initially planned. But, I don’t feel that way. I’ll be perfectly honest in saying that my life hasn’t always gone according to plan, but then again, whose has? If it were up to me I’d be married with children (no, NOT Al and Peg Bundy Style), a stay at home mom or famous, and would give back to the world as much as I can. I have none of these things- no husband, no child, no celebrity… but, I still have a desire to make this world a better place. After recently facing some major life issues, some that have haunted me since childhood, I began to wonder what I could do with all that life had thrown my way. How can I turn my suffering into something beautiful and possibly healing for someone else? What do I have to offer to the world? And how can I make a difference? I know by being a teacher I am crafting minds and changing hearts but I want to do more… I think the way I want to change the world is through some sort of public speech. I don’t know why, but lately I’ve been having dreams about this very thing. I would love to travel the country or world speaking to children and adults, Christians and non-believers, at schools and at churches about this very thing: YOU CAN CHANGE THE WORLD. I want to speak to others about shifting from a victim mentality to that of a survivor. I want to talk about overcoming adversity and hardships. I want to show people that it is perfectly okay to grieve, feel sorry for yourself, to be hurt and be angry when something horrible happens in your life but that there is so much healing in getting help and forgiving people who have wronged you. I guess, I just feel I have a lot to say. I don’t pretend to think my life or hardships are any more severe or drastic than others, I just think I have a story to tell and my hope is that I can help others by sharing it. So, even though I have no idea how to go about making this fourth goal or dream happen a huge part of my heart is pulling me in the direction of speaking out about such things and changing the world one student, person, youth group, school, or arena at a time.

I’m not the only one who can change the world. You can too… The world is your oyster; don’t be a clam! You can do and achieve anything you set out to do in life, if you just believe in yourself. You have the opportunity to make any dream a reality. So, set goals, plan, and shoot for the moon. Even if you miss you’ll land among the stars. We all falter but we all have the ability to get back up and succeed. So, as Ryan Shupe sings, “when you dream, dream big… as big as the ocean blue. ‘Cause when you dream it might come true. When you dream, dream big!”

bom filme!

A shirt closely resembling the one above was seen last Friday at the Horseshoe. It was not received well. In particular there was a problem with the “smile pockets.” Comments ranged from “I’m creeped out by your shirt, because it is smiling at me,” to the more simple “I don’t like that shirt, and you should stop wearing it.” Let me suggest two other western shirt possibilities for the next show:

I call the first one the “these colors don’t run” shirt, and the second one “I don’t sell bolo ties, I sell dreams” shirt. Thanks to Matthew McConaughey’s brother for modeling.

You know, I’ve been thinking about it for an entire day now, and I think I’m ready to say it out loud:

Dazed and Confused is one of my all-time favorite movies.

I’m quite certain I didn’t see this film in the theater when it was released in 1993, but it is very possible I first saw it in the large science classroom on my campus where movies were screened on the weekends. My best memories of the film are from later VHS or DVD screenings, though — either enjoying it with friends who had also seen it dozens of times or watching others discover its pleasures.

I mean, honestly: That movie is bursting with goodness. It has a cast of thousands, including many actors who would go on to become big stars, who flit in and out of each other’s storylines in a way that is both impressively intricate and tooooootally fitting with the movie’s it’s-all-good-man vibe. It has a fabulous soundtrack and a cool sunny, washed-out look. It has romance! violence! inter-generational strife! heartbreak! Aerosmith! Wooderson! The only way it could be any better is if it had a dance number.

It also has a hundred million quotable lines — of which, I feel obliged to report, “Wipe that face off your head, bitch!” is a favorite of one Ms. M. Kitt. I think of her whenever I hear any of the songs from the D&C soundtrack.

I think we should all take today off for a ceremonial viewing of Dazed and Confused. Don’t you? No?

It’d be a lot cooler if you did.

For years now, I’ve wanted to write a supernatural detective story that is a sort of combination between Simon R Green’s ‘Nightside’ series and early seasons of Buffy. I’m aiming to have two post-uni girls as my main characters, with the cheesy kind of relationship that Dirk Pitt (Matthew McConaughey) and Al Giordino (Steve Zahn) have in the 2005 film ‘Sahara’. In essence, I want lots of angst, lots of romance issues and lots of Zombie mayhem…

… only, it’s not really turning out the way I want it to. I don’t know whether it’s the fact that I’m not involved in any particularly relatable angst at presence, or whether it’s because I haven’t played House of the Dead in far too long, but somehow what I’m writing seems to be more akin to that dreadful chick lit pulp that’s presented in glittery pink covers than it is to unrealistic zombie massacre.

Mostly, I love it when characters turn out to have a life of their own – it’s one of the more interesting aspects of writing. I’ll never forget my excitement when I realised that two of my characters had fallen desperately in love without my prior knowledge . It was almost as good as the surprise I got when one member of this happy union died unexpectedly. I know how pretentious all that sounds, but it’s true nevertheless – while I do plan key plot points of my work, the vast majority just sort of spills out through the keyboard.

Right now though, I’m really hacked off with my subconscious at coming up with nonsense I’d actively avoid in a bookshop. I know I said I wanted romance, but I don’t really want my prologue to incorporate a break up, declarations of undying love and something so lame it could only ever have been conceived by a ‘Neighbours’ script writer. As a result, I have scrapped my opening chapters and will attempt to start again. After some distinctly non-lovey music. Spineshank here I come.

Bolsa Osklen

Sapatênis by Osklen

DVD Top 10. Bestsellerliste der Woche von Illuminati bis State of Play Illuminati: Robert Langdon (T

DVD Top 10.
Bestsellerliste der Woche
von Illuminati bis State of Play

Illuminati:

Gleichzeitig.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine:

State of Play – Stand der Dinge:
Ein junger aufstrebender Politiker und ein Washingtoner Enthüllungsreporter finden sich mitten im Epizentrum einer Reihe von Morden wieder, die nur scheinbar nichts miteinander zu tun haben. Der Kongressabgeordnete Stephen Collins (Ben Affleck) ist Hoffnung und Zukunft seiner Partei – ein aussichtsreicher und ehrenhafter Newcomer, unter anderem im Vorsitz des Komitees für Verteidigungsausgaben…

Matthew McConaughey is one of those actors I can’t help but like. He’s a man who — in the real world — seems like a perfectly affable party fiend who would be fun to hang around with. Someone who doesn’t really give a damn, who makes movies to fund his lifestyle, and only gets to make movies because he’s just popular enough to justify a continued career. He’s famous for pot-smoking, naked bongo playing, and anecdotes about goat sex. His website is so completely “him” it’s as if he has been reduced to a computer echo of himself, a la Jeff Bridges in Tron, and then blasted onto our screens as a series of chill statements and photos of him on mountains, complete with lazy faux-dub rhythms in the background. The most lovable things on the site are the randomised “McConaughey Facts” that pop up at the bottom of the screen. Sample McConaughey Fact: “In my most recent trip to Papua New Guinea I was inducted into the Kuppa Tribe of the Malagan Clan.” That’s just so McConaughey.

As I’ve said many a time, anyone who can laugh at himself is all right in my book. When presented with footage of Matt Damon doing an impression of him on Letterman…

…he seemed to take it with good humour. (It’s about two minutes from the end of the clip.)

My favourite thing about that clip is that at the end of the interview, as the presenter is trying to wrap things up, he goes off on a tangent about spending his Christmas with a family he once visited as an exchange student. It’s right out of nowhere, but that burning need to communicate some random fact about himself for no reason other than that he seems to be looking forward to the excursion is something I — a notorious blabbermouth — can really relate to.

Even though I find McConaughey the Man endlessly entertaining, McConaughey the Actor is another matter. Watching one of his movies is a bit of a crapshoot. Will we get one of his committed performances, such as his delicate turn in Robert Zemeckis’ Contact, or as the demented Van Zan in Reign of Fire (which he was easily the best thing about)? Or will it be a frustratingly light but not particularly funny effort, as in Ron Howard’s instantly forgettable EdTV? For every Frailty or Lone Star there is a Wedding Planner, a Fool’s Gold, and probably a Failure To Launch to boot. Appearing in disposable romcoms might work to keep him in sex wax and bandannas, but it makes following his career difficult. Any hope that he might become Brad Pitt to Richard Linklater’s David Fincher fell apart when The Newton Boys came and went without making a ripple in the popular consciousness. He’s doing better than former girlfriend and fellow romcom stalwart Sandra Bullock right now, but it’s becoming touch and go.

He doesn’t even have an action career to fall back on. U-571 is only memorable for the shameful lies about the Enigma decoding effort, and Sahara — a film I quite like — is notorious for being one of the rare projects whose financial workings have been put on display for all the world to laugh at. Though not me. Seriously, I liked it. It was refreshingly irony-free, just a big crazy adventure about guys who get into scrapes for fun and do the right thing with no soul-searching. It was not of its time, sadly. It’s another film used as a short-hand for excessive Hollywood trash by people who haven’t seen it. Yes, it was obscenely expensive, and there’s no argument for that, but it’s got some charm. With about 20-25 minutes lopped out, it would’ve been treated with a lot more affection.

Unfortunately Ghosts of Girlfriends Past sees too much of the coasting McConaughey, with only hints of his real film-star energy. In a very loose adaptation of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, writers Jon Lucas and Scott Moore aim for easy emotional targets and don’t bother to complicate the story too much. McConaughey plays Connor Mead, a photographer with Austin Powers’ hunger for consequence-free sexual encounter but none of the dental problems. Forced by a flicker of conscience to attend his brother’s wedding, Mead quickly upsets and alienates the wedding guests with his cynical anti-marriage attitude, until he is visited by the ghost of his lothario uncle Wayne, played as a Robert Evans/Hugh Hefner hybrid by Michael Douglas. Wayne warns his Scrooge-like nephew that he will be visited by three “ghosts” (though at least one of them is still alive; the movie ties itself in knots trying to be light while addressing themes of death and loneliness). These apparitions — who enjoyably treat the “visions” like interactive videos — show Mead the miserable consequences of his actions, and reveal the reason he’s so emotionally disconnected: as a teenager, he was snubbed by his true love, Jenny Perotti (Jennifer Garner). It broke his heart and sent him to find solace in the dubious wisdom of Uncle Wayne.

Mead’s dark night of the soul forces him to accept the idea of true love just in time to help his brother (Breckin Meyer) marry his long-term sweetheart (an unbearably whiny Lacey Chabert), and to rescue Jenny from a relationship with potential suitor Brad (Daniel Sunjata). This last task is the most problematic one in a movie that otherwise has too many easy answers. Though we’re meant to side with Mead as he throws off his selfish persona, he’s also trying to ruin a potential relationship between Jenny and a scarily handsome volunteer with Doctors Without Borders who seems to be a really sweet guy. Mead, on the other hand, is intolerably arrogant and thoughtless, though he maintains the same level of oily charm throughout. McConaughey isn’t given enough room to adequately show his conversion to the cause of love, so that while Dickens did a thorough job of showing how Scrooge could change from curmudgeon to saint, Mead’s post-revelation persona seems much like his previous personality, except more manic.

This isn’t the only problem. Lucas and Moore’s script holds few surprises and fewer laughs than even their inexplicably popular breakout hit The Hangover. Director Mark Waters, whose work on The Spiderwick Chronicles was so impressive, manages to bring some life to this formulaic project, with the added bonus that he lights the movie with something other than a very very bright light — a concept that seemed to elude the directors of other 2009 romcoms, especially the biggest romantic comedy hits of the year, Robert Luketic’s The Ugly Truth and Anne Fletcher’s The Proposal. Waters also gets entertaining performances from Michael Douglas and Emma Stone as the “ghost” who deflowered Mead in college. Garner is given less to do, but she sells her big emotional moments, including a moving bedroom scene midway through. It’s also McConaughey’s best scene, with Mead forced to watch his past self mistreat the woman he loves simply because he’s scared of his feelings. In moments like that, the conceit of making the romcom Christmas Carol seems more inspired than it actually is.

My affection for Garner is even greater than my support for McConaughey. Ever since her career-making turn in Alias, I’ve been a huge fan, obnoxiously maintaining that she would get an Oscar nomination (at least!) by the end of the decade. Unless the Academy is going to surprise me and give her a nod for her extremely entertaining turn in The Invention of Lying, I think I’m going to come up short on that one. Her decision to cut down on film roles while raising her children is an understandable one, but I wish she made more movies. There hasn’t been a single film featuring Garner that wasn’t massively improved by her presence — even something as weak as Daredevil occasionally flies thanks to her. In fact, the only thing that didn’t suck about Electra was her performance as the titular assassin; she brought far more pathos and commitment to the project than it deserved.

Compare Ghosts of Girlfriends Past to The Invention of Lying, which was even more fascinated with the interplay of honesty and self-deception. After a brilliant riff on belief and religion, it spends a long, entertaining time banging its head against the disparity between the concepts of love and biological necessity, playing games with the conventions of the genre while at the same time pointing an accusing finger at the audience for expecting such cliches. (500) Days of Summer plays a similar trick; a love-struck Joseph Gordon-Levitt is beguiled by a romantic vision of life soundtracked by The Smiths and Belle & Sebastian and then left crushed by the realisation that he’s been deluding himself as much as he has been lied to by Zooey Deschanel’s idealised Summer. Compared to those two movies, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past has no big ideas to share, other than that love is all you need.

Maybe it’s unfair to give Ghosts of Girlfriends Past a black mark for not matching up to the ambition of Gervais and Robinson’s high-concept fantasy or Mark Webb’s deconstruction, but now that filmmakers seem eager to break the genre down in order to build it back up, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past might end up being the last even vaguely entertaining traditional romcom made. Surely we can at least give it gold stars for being a more involving, charming, and imaginative movie than those flat and cynical laugh-free disasters The Proposal and The Ugly Truth. Where they trade in cheeky, strained jokes about sex and modern gender politics, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past has more luck focusing on the people in the relationship than the gimmicks that get in their way, and then trounces those films completely by casting two charming actors who seem to have some sparks together. Though McConaughey’s performance is disappointing and lacks modulation, the relentless charm that stops him from hitting a deeper note still has its uses. More so than many male leads in recent romcoms, at least he can flash a winning smile and drawl some flirty come-on with naughty aplomb, and when he’s matched with Garner’s wholesome persona, it’s hard to dismiss the rote shenanigans completely. Sometimes, making a reasonably successful movie really is that simple.

Starring: Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew McConaughey, Kathy Bates, Terry Bradshaw

Lame factor: 2/5

Tearjerker: 1/5

Will guys want to watch it? Considering it has SJP AND Mr. Sexypants McConaughey, I’d say..NO.

Allllllrighty, I like Sarah Jessica Parker, ok? I mean, yes, she cannot for the life of her, be anyone other than Carrie Bradshaw, in ANY movie, but that’s ok. She sticks to what she knows, right? She’s cute in that goofy way, except for the annoying screaming for no apparent reason. What the hell is up with that?

Plot: McConaughey plays a 30-something dude-type that still lives at home with his folks (and has no plans on that ever changing). He has a new girlfriend every week and all his little guy pals also live at home with their parents. It’s their “thing”, apparently. Kathy Bates and Terry Bradshaw play McSexypants’ parents, who hire SJP, who is an interventionist for men who suffer from the “failure to launch” syndrome, which basically means they can’t grow up and they still live with mom and dad. SJP’s job is too pretend to be interested in McSexypants, and slowly ween him off the parents, build his confidence in really lame and stereotypical ways and eventually have him move out into his own place.

Of course, as with any chick flick, issues arise. SJP falls in love, McSexypants’ friends find out about the scam and, naturally, McSexypants finds out as well. All hell breaks loose and he winds up tied to a chair. What? Watch it, you’ll see.

Throughout the movie we get mildly entertained by that one black-haired girl named Zooey, who plays Kit, which is SJP’s roommate. She is completely uninterested and uninteresting and yet is still quirky enough to be cute in that bitchy way and uh, kind of reminds me of me.

By the end of the movie, you will not be surprised because, hello, it involves Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew McConaughey. What did you think this was, a Reese Witherspoon movie? However, if you are ailing from a lonely heart, a sore throat or just general blahness, the sheer sexiness of the southern drawl from one McConaughey paired with his sexy chest and abdominal muscles will cure you of everything. (Sidenote for the squeemish: there is a scene where McConaughey and his little guy pals are doing yoga. There is little that grosses me out more than a man doing yoga. Even if he is a sexy, sexy beast.)

Worth watching? Aw yeah, why not. It has funny moments, a sexy southern accent and Kathy Bates.
