2004 was a hard call to make, especially as someone who spent the majority of her life dreaming of living in Boston, living in Boston, and now, planning to go back to Boston. The Red Sox winning the World Series and breaking the curse in 2004 is high on the list of things that I am thrilled to have been able to witness.

2004 also saw some pretty good films with Super Size Me and Napoleon Dynamite. The latter resulted in every high school student I know incessantly quoting the film for months. (“But my lips hurt real bad!”, and “Whatever I feel like I wanna do, God!”, seem to be the most memorable). Garden State, if I remember correctly, also ruled my life. (And its soundtrack ruled the CD player of my borrowed car that fall). These were all thoroughly enjoyable and everything, but my final decision was the television show Friends.

Friends began in 1994 and followed the stories of 6 twenty-something best friends; Ross Geller (David Schwimmer), Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston), Monica Geller (Courteney Cox Arquette), Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry), Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow), and Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc).

I’m sure that everybody knows the basic story line of Friends, so I won’t get into it. Basically, it was a stand-out during the mid-1990’s height of sitcoms. It was funny, it was simple, it portrayed a life that I could only dream of, and the characters were wildly attractive. I never had “The Rachel” haircut, but I have taken photos of Ms. Aniston to the hairdresser with me before, and I’ve always dreamed of having a purple kitchen like Monica’s.

Friends makes the cut because not only did I love the show, I loved it for years on end. I loved the characters and I loved following their lives and relationships. I’m not sure if I was ever truly invested in it as a show that I had to watch every single Thursday night when a new episode aired, but I know I did often make a point to watch it — and part of me finding and enjoying the show probably had everything to do with the fact that it aired on Thursday nights: The only night a week  that I could count on having off from gymnastics.

Not that the day of the original airing really mattered: the show reran in syndication an unreal amount through the early ’00s.

Friends is an easy show to like, and that’s probably why I like it. Sometimes it’s nice to just be entertained by enjoyable characters. While I do like viewing and reading things that require considerable critical thought (though, as a handful of professors will tell you, getting me to enjoy viewing and reading in such a way was not an easy task), but more than that, I enjoy being entertained. I like being able to take a story at face value and laugh at it. I loved the immature antics of Joey and Chandler and their open indulgence in simple things: television, take-out, porn, and ceramic dogs. I loved the materialistic side of Rachel: I could never be that vain if I tried, but I like the idea that maybe it doesn’t make you a bad person if you are. And, if I’m being honest, I loved the romantic story lines with Ross & Rachel and Monica & Chandler. I spent 10 years rooting for Ross and Rachel, and so did you.

I cried when I watched the Friends finale, because I had invested countless hours into these characters, and it was time to move on. (I cry when I finish books, too, because it’s like my new book-friends die when the story is over).

While there might not be anything seemingly ground-breaking about the show, it is the only show that I can think of (with a possible exception of It’s Always Sunny) that has ever had a true ensemble cast. All 6 friends played an equal acting role, and in each others fictional lives. They broke ground when they lobbied to all be paid the same per episode salary (Schwimmer and Aniston took pay cuts in order for this to happen), and ultimately, the show was probably so believable because of things like that. Friends felt genuine because the cast members were, in actuality, friends.

I will admit right now that I proudly own at least two seasons on DVD and at least four “Best of Friends” DVDS… and a trivia game…

5. Jessie Katsopolis’s Dad (John Aprea) from Full House

I remember watching an award show once. Julia Roberts won for something, it must’ve been Erin Brockovich. And she climbs up on stage to receive it and then has a momentary freak-out because Beau Bridges (BEAU BRIDGES) is presenting it to her. I think she even said something like, “Oh my God, it’s Beau Bridges.” And everyone was like really? You’re JULIA ROBERTS. You hang out with George Clooney and Brad Pitt regularly, you’ve met EVERYONE and you freak out over Beau Bridges? What was the last thing Beau Bridges was in, can you even remember? (For the record, I’m so with you, Julia, who is clearly reading this. I once thought I saw Beau Bridges on a flight and almost had a heart attack. He is, after all, the dad from The Wizard).

So here’s my theory. Sometimes, it’s not the fame of the actor you spot in real life, in “the wild” you might say, but what you remember them from. As in, I was walking to work down Robertson Blvd. one day and passed Uncle Jesse’s dad in Full House and I. lost. my. mind. The Julia Roberts- Beau Bridges theory is the only excuse I can muster for my COMPLETELY illogical reaction. I almost attacked him on the sidewalk, such was my joy.

4. Lex Luthor (John Shea) from Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman

This one was funny. My brother was visiting me. We were in my car, driving through an alley in Santa Monica when LEX LUTHOR steps out from the shadows and walks in front of us. And it was so embarrassing too because I think our jaws dropped at the same time and he turned to look at us, two gaping buffoons, and then smirked and kept walking. On his way to the Farmer’s Market. Lex Luthor wants some fresh produce and there’s not a damn thing you can do about it.

3. Michael Guerin/Jared Booth (Brendan Fehr) from Roswell/Bones

When I moved to LA, my roommate/soon-to-be-best-friend (hi Bic!) and I spent the majority of our time dealing with living on a new planet (and yes, LA is its own planet. Make no mistake) by hiding in our new apartment and watching hours and hours and hours of Roswell. I think over the course of our tenure as roommates, we’ve watched those DVDs 7,000 times. So when I (finally) got a job in the Star Corridor (the corner of Beverly Blvd. and Robertson Blvd., home of a Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf AND a Starbucks across the street from each other, “we met at Starbucks but different Starbucks”) and saw brooding alien Michael Guerin walking across the street, right next to my human body, I almost fell into traffic. I pulled my ass to the corner, called Bic and proceeded to hyperventilate. Over the course of my years in LA, I would see a number of other Roswell cast members- Maria in that Coffee Bean, Tess (you may know her as Claire from Lost) and Alex (Colin Hanks) at Coachella and, yes, my reaction was the same every time. Complete and utter meltdown.

2. Chanandelor Bong (Matthew Perry) from Friends (twice!)

Speaking of the Star Corridor, Matthew Perry clearly has some kind of caffeine addiction. I saw him for the first time at the Starbucks, notable because I was on the phone with my mother at the time who got VERY excited and then said, “Tell him I’m watching Friends right NOW! It’s the one where he proposes to Monica.” Like I was capable of movement, much less approaching him and handing him a cell phone with my mother chattering on the other end about his tearful proposal. More likely, I would’ve gone up to him and told him that his episode of Growing Pains basically traumatized me for life, thanks a lot.

The SECOND time was at The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf (yup, right across the street. Chandler, like me, is not partial to just one massive coffee chain) and, to my everlasting joy, Bic had met me for a coffee break on her way back from either another dreadful temp job or a depressing interview. We both stood by the counter, waiting for our coffees, and Matthew Perry stood next to us ordering. We conversed THE ENTIRE TIME, mindlessly talking as we both tried not to stare at him. Finally, he left, we sat down and we looked at each other. What the hell were we talking about? She was saying things, I was saying things- she could’ve been talking about elephants and my response could’ve been about arugula. And now we’ll never know.

1. David Addison (Bruce Willis) from Moonlighting

Ah yes, the car sighting. One of my favorites because of the sheer skill involved. Cars, after all, move pretty fast and you’ve got to be able to get a good look and confirm quickly. It’s also good if you’re either alone (so no one can dispute it) or the glimpse is substantial enough that you get immediate confirmation from the other party as well, lest you have a “George Michael on the 405″ incident (Bic saw him, I didn’t but it didn’t stop us from stalking him in traffic for forty minutes) or a humiliating “Simon Rex in a LeBaron” moment which my friends will STILL not let me live down (it was him, I swear. I want those words on my tombstone. Also, their primary argument is that Simon Rex would not drive a LeBaron and I think that’s PRECISELY why it was Simon Rex. Come on.)

The Bruce Willis Sighting is my all-time favorite sighting of all time. I was driving through Westwood one day, in a residential area and pulled up to a stop sign to make a left turn. The car opposite me, a black Mercedes, had also stopped. I waited for it to leave so I could make my left but the car just STOPS in the middle of the intersection. I then realize that the car stopped because the driver was watching a leggy blonde in a sports bra jog across the street, like actually just watching her bounce along. I’m seriously irritated now and just about to lay on the horn when the driver turns to me, smirks, and it’s Bruce Fucking Willis. I just about shat in my pants, SHAT WITH A VENGEANCE.

Happy Halloween (tomorrow)! But for our workplace purposes, you get the drift. It’s Friday and the weekend’s here and gee, what’ll you do for fun? Will you trick or treat? Will you see one of the (few) movies opening this weekend? If you’re curious, here’s the deal…not tons of  brand new films opening because we’ve still got a few weeks before the  big blockbuster holiday stuff that falls in the TCMZ  (Thanksgiving/Christmas Movie Zone) …as in New Moon, 2012, A Christmas Carol, Avatar, etc… But for now, your main choices are as follows. There is 1) This Is It, the Michael Jackson documentary. 2) Gentlemen Broncos, the latest from Jared Hess who made Napoleon Dynamite. I saw it and while I realize I am easily 20-30 years older than the target audience, I did find Jemaine Clement (Flight of  the Conchords) really funny in it. Perhaps you’ll see Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day which is the sequel to the cult hit B.S.(1) — still starring Sean Patrick Flannery and Norman Reedus. Then we have another scary movie: House of the Devil which is getting lots of critical acclaim. Or perhaps you’ll just go see Paranormal Activity and continue to make that flick one of the most profitable pictures ever! If you do see something, let us know what you think.

In the meantime, all this TV stuff got me wondering — which naturally, does lead to a poll. Because I was watching a Friends rerun. Still funny. A show I was quite keen on. And I know now that the girls have all done really well of late. Courteney Cox has a hit show,  Cougar Town. Jennifer Aniston’s got a slew of movies, she’s one of America’s faves and her lovelife is daily tabloid fodder. Their costar, the lovely Lisa Kudrow is also about to guest star on Cougar Town.

So the Friends gals are really busy these days. Which leads me to wonder…what about the guys? Oh sure, everybody has a few misfires. But my question for you today is which of these guys has the stamina (and the chops) to survive the curse of the hit sitcom?

These are the kinds of things I think about in order to be good and scared by the time Halloween rolls around. 

Benjamin Schwarz wrote an interesting piece on Mad Men in this month’s issue of The Atlantic.

Matthew Perry (Vänner) spelar Hudson som lider av depersonalisations syndrom vilket gör honom avtrubbad och har svårigheter att fungera i olika sociala sammanhang. Han är djupt olycklig och inte förrän den spontana Sara (Lynn Collins; The Number 23, X-Men Origins: Wolverine mfl) dyker upp i hans liv fylls han med hopp om framtiden, men hans funktionshinder sätter hela tiden krokben för relationen och frågan är om de ska kunna hitta en balans som gör det möjligt för dem att vara tillsammans?

Detta skulle visst vara en komedi och visst finns där några dråpliga scener och viss underfundighet. Mestadels är det dock en tragisk skildring av en djupt olycklig man som inte är förmögen att leva som han önskar. Perry gör riktigt bra ifrån sig i denna återhållsamma rolltolkning och troligen är det också det bästa han presterat som skådespelare. En intressant lågbudget independentfilm som dock inte riktigt håller hela vägen till slutet.

Football Behind Bars: Sky One (Recorded 12th Oct Watched 15th Oct)

This was the final episode of a six-part, Sky One documentary series, presented by Ian Wright, about young offenders playing football.  It was bound to be awful, wasn’t it?  Well, you’d be forgiven for thinking so, but it was actually rather well done.

It followed Ian Wright’s attempts to set up a football academy in a young offenders institute, in an attempt to help them learn some life skills, and hopefully make it possible for them not to re-offend.  It would have been easy for the programme makers to either overly sensationalise the criminal pasts of the inmates, and\or give a rose-tinted view of the outcomes of the scheme; to their credit, they did neither.  Nonetheless, the academy clearly had a positive impact on those involved, and it was good to see a ‘celebrity’ trying to make a genuine difference.

Curb Your Enthusiam: More 4 (R 15th Oct W 16th Oct)

I was actually genuinely exciting for the return of Curb, and couldn’t wait to see this first episode.  We’re now in to season 7 and it shouldn’t still be funny as it’s essentially the same every episode. Somehow, though, it’s still hilarious.  If you’ve never seen an episode, then I seriously recommend that you do.  Larry David is my hero (the fictional one and the real one).

Eastbound and Down: FX (R 12th Oct W 17th Oct)

I didn’t like the first episode, but I went in to this one trying to like it.  The first few minutes saw a weird Will Ferrell cameo, which could have made things a but more watchable.  It didn’t, I lasted five minutes before deleting it.  I have this nagging feeling that everyone’s going to be raving about this in a few months time and it’s going to make me sad inside.

Caravans: A British Love Affair: BBC4 (R 17th Oct W 17th Oct)

I really don’t know what it was that made me watch this, but don’t judge me.  It wasn’t the most amazing documentary I’ve ever seen, but I mention it because I thought it was only fair to give a fair reflection of all the programmes that I watch.  And sometimes I just want to watch a documentary about caravans.  It’s all too easy to scoff at caravanners these days, but this documentary at least explained what a feeling of freedom that owning a caravan gave people in dull post-war Britain.

Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip: Channel 4 (R 12th Oct W 18th Oct)

It’s two or three years since this originally aired and I was ambivalent about it the first time around; it was well written and acted but I felt it was deeply flawed.  Since it was first shown, I’ve seen the whole of The West Wing, Aaron Sorkin’s previous show, so, when I saw this as a late night repeat, I thought I’d give it another go.  Would my opinion by any different a second time around?

No.  The script was still good and the Matthew Perry\Bradley Whitford double act was as likeable as ever, but, there were also a lot of buts.  I picked out lots of flaw, just in this pilot alone, but I’ll try and keep them as brief as possible.  I think you can lump many of the problems in to the category of ‘unconvincing’: I’m not convinced by Jordan McDeere, I’m not convinced that the ‘big 3′ stars of the show-within-a-show have any talent, and I’m not convinced that ‘Studio 60′ was ever a hit show.  Most embarrassing of all is when they try and show some of the comedy sketches – let’s just not talk about it.  It’s a very strange show that is both really good and excruciatingly bad in equal measure.  For that reason alone, I’ll probably watch them all.

Modern Family: Sky One (R 15th Oct W 19th Oct)

The latest highly acclaimed US comedy show arrives on Sky One, so of course I was watching.  It’s a mockumentary following the fortunes of three (yes, you guessed it) modern families.  I didn’t think it entirely worked; some of the jokes seemed a bit too obvious, and the ‘feel’ wasn’t quite right.  That said, it did make me laugh a few times, and it was only the pilot, so it can’t be all bad.  The main thing I took from the experience though was how much it made me want to watch Arrested Development again.

I eventually got to watch “17 Again” after pretty much wanting to see it since it was out at the cinema. As you may know if you read my blog regularly I really like Zac Efron a lot, and in this film he really does not disappoint. Also he is starting to get away from HSM.

The basic plot is pretty much “Big” but the opposite way round, instead of growing up and being older. He gets younger and a chance to go back to High School and do his senior year over again. Mike O’Donnell (Matthew Perry/Zac Efron) found out his girlfriend Scarlett was pregnant and found out at the same time he was due to play the most important basketball game of his life as would help him get a place into college. However, he ran out of the game to comfort his girlfriend and tell her his life is with her and the baby.

Then you go to current day, their two children are both in high school now and they are getting a divorce. Mike is staying with his best friend Ned (Thomas Lennon), who provides some fantastic comedy moments involving Lord of the Rings and speaking Elvish. Mike ends up back in the high school, and talks to a janitor while looking at his old basketball photo. Thus he wakes up the next day to find himself 17 again.

At first he figures that he is getting another chance to do his senior year in order to do it right. But as the story goes on he realises that is not the reason he was put back. It was to help out his children and actually get to know them. Again this causes some very amusing moments knowing that he is in fact their dad. He also realises how much he still loves Scarlett and does not want to go through with the divorce. He helps his son get onto the basketball team and stops him from being bullied. He attempts to stop his daughter’s relationship with the captain of the basketball team who is the school bully, which eventually happens.

Obviously problems occur when Mike gets quite close to Scarlett, when he is supposed to be Mark. Although Scarlett cannot get over how much he looks like Mike did back in high school. The court scene when the divorce was supposed to happen was so moving. With Mark turning up and saying he was reading a letter from Mike, but as he reads it he is crying and Scarlett stops the divorce for now. Looks at what Mark was reading and it has to be at the moment she knows that it is Mike. That part was so difficult to watch as it was so sad and touching at the same time.

Zac Efron really does step it up a gear in this movie. However, with the basketball I could not help but think he must actually be a pretty good basketball player now. I mean yes he is still in a High School in this movie, but I really think the whole divorce court scene really was a different side to Zac and hopefully he will be in movies in the future which really help to show that acting talent we got glimpses of in this movie.

The key points to this movie have to be that you live for the moments and have no regrets as you get older. You must do everything that you feel is right, but remember the reasons in which you do things. Keep reminding yourself that it is what you really wanted at the time. This movie really does show how you must remember why you made certain choices as it was the right thing to do. I have to admit I was thinking if I would like to change anything I have done, but I really don’t I do believe everything happens for a reason and we must be happy with how everything works out. Would anyone else want to change things from when they were a teenager if they could?

I keep having these moments, kind of like an epiphany but not so grand. They happen quite frequently and without warning. I look around myself and am suddenly freakishly aware of my life and surroundings and I just think ‘This is my life right now.’ Sometimes its continued, like, ‘this is my life right now. im living in new york’ and it blows my mind. A dear dear friend looked at me one day and said ‘You know, everything that I want for my life is happening. I wanted to move to New York and I thought that would never happen and it did. I want to be in film. I want people to know my name. I think that this is going to happen. I want it bad enough.’ And, I really think that this is going to happen for her.

And I want some of the same things, I want to sing for the rest of my life. There is no feeling like being on stage and people cheering for you. My life needs to be filled with that feeling! So, I have decided to take some steps in that direction. I am taking a “music bath.” I’m trying to surround myself with good music and music trivia. I am going to find my old Music Theory notes and commit the Circle of Fifths to memory. I am fixing my grandma’s old acoustic and I am having a friend teach me how to play. I am confident.

About a month and a half ago, I was at Watermark Church in Dallas, Texas and Coffey Anderson was there to sing. He was, I guess, a finalist on Nashville Star. He ended up doing more speaking than singing while I was there, but I needed to hear what he had to say. His story was pretty cool. He ended up winning a small talent competition where the prize was eight hours in a recording studio. He wrote nine songs in those eight hours and burned them all to 50 discs he bought at WalMart. He started playing on the corner, selling his CDs and sold all of them in a half hour. He made enough money to get a laptop and he started making youTube videos. Through his youTube videos, someone with Nashville Star found him and asked him to be on the show. Coffey was going to be a basketball star. He didn’t start playing the guitar until his junior year of college.

He was so unbelievably determined to make it. At one point, he told us that he would drive around L.A. and when he would see a nice car pull up next to him, he’d signal the driver and ask if they would pull over. Agora uma boa notícia para os milhares de fãs da série de TV, Friends, que há um bom tempo torcem por uma versão cinematográfica do seriado, pois é…finalmente parece que os seis amigos vão parar mesmo nas telonas.

De acordo com o jornal britânico Daily Mail, a adaptação será feita e foi confirmada por um dos atores, James Michael Tyler, que viveu o funcionário do Central Perk, Gunther.

Os seis atores principais da série, Jennifer Aniston, Matthew Perry, Lisa Kudrow, Matt Le Blanc, David Schwimmer e Courteney Cox, estão confirmados e o roteiro ficará por conta dos criadores da série, David Crane e Marta Kauffman.

O seriado é centrado em seis amigos do bairro Greenwich Village, Ross, Rachel, Mônica, Chandler, Joey e Phoebe, que se envolvem em várias confusões típicas de jovens que moram sozinhos e buscam progredir em Manhattan. A previsão é de que o longa chegue aos cinemas no segundo semestre de 2011.

O elenco do seriado “Friends” vai se reunir mais uma vez para fazer um filme baseado no sucesso da TV, informou neste domingo o jornal “Daily Mail”. As seis estrelas concordaram em mudar para a tela grande, seguindo o sucesso do filme “Sex and The City”.

De acordo com o jornal, isso significa que Jennifer Aniston, 40, Courteney Cox, 45, Lisa Kudrow, 46, Matt LeBlanc, 42, Matthew Perry, 40, e David Schwimmer, 42, ficarão juntos no mesmo cenário pela primeira vez desde que o seriado acabou em 2004.

Desde que foi ao ar nos Estados Unidos o último epidódio do seriado “Friends”, em 2004 , há boatos de que a série ganharia uma versão para as telonas. Tal rumor nunca deixou de existir, os atores nunca negaram um possível reencontro para fazer o filme, mas tudo sempre ficou nesse campo de especulações.

Pois bem, agora parece que a versão cinematográfica vai sair mesmo!!!

Segundo o tablóide britânico Daily Mail, o elenco original que protagonizou a série por dez temporadas se reunirá no mesmo estúdio em que eram gravadas as cenas do seriado. A história do filme estaria de acordo com a idade dos seis amigos após esse espaço de tempo, ou seja, todos com cerca de 40 anos, contando o que aconteceu com suas vidas ao longo desse período. A previsão é de que o filme chegue aos cinemas no verão de 2011 no hemisfério norte.

Ha salido otra vez en USA, y van no sé cuantas veces, el rumor que se adaptaría a la gran pantalla la famosa serie de televisión “friends”, que estuvo 10 años en emisión, y que tuvo un montón de éxito. “Friends”, se ha convertido en toda una serie de culto, y es muy difícil que nos olvidemos de los 6 protagonistas, Rachel, Mónica, Phoebe, Joey, Chandler y Ross.

Pues como se hacen eco numerosas páginas en Estados Unidos, y en España, El Mundo, por ejemplo, esta vez puede que sea más que un rumor. Y es que según uno de los secundarios de la serie, James Michael Tyler, que daba vida a Gunther el camarero enamorado hasta le medula del personaje de Jennifer Aniston, dice que sí se hará la película, que ya se han puesto en contacto con todo el equipo para hacerla con vistas a estrenarlas en 2011.

Si hacemos caso de esta noticia, y en el caso que acepten los 6 protagonistas, Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Courtney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer y Matthew Perry, la cosa estaría muy bien para los fans de esta serie, en los que me encuentro. Aunque avisar que es un rumor, y que han habido varios sobre el tema. Decir, que por ejemplo el NY Daily News, tiene una encuesta en su página Web, en la que pregunta si comprarías las entradas para ver la película y, hasta la fecha, un 68% de los encuestados dice, de forma rotunda, que sí. Podría ayudar que otra seríe que se adaptó a la gran pantalla hace poco, Sexo en Nueva York, haya sido un éxito rotundo. En la actualidad hay otras adaptaciones a la gran pantalla de series éxitosas, la última que se ha confirmado es la del Equipo A, con Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper (en los papeles de Hannibal y Fenix respectivamente) y Jessica Biel.
