In keeping with human inclination to be averse to change and suspicious of new ideas, the C96 was not as well-received as its makers hoped when it was first introduced. To give the impression that they had sold more units than were actually sold, they skipped large blocks of serial numbers–not an unheard-of marketing strategy. Later, when production picked up, they appear to have raided their own stock of parts from previous production runs and retroactively stamped firearms with older serial numbers to fill in the gaps. Along with the confusion caused by various modifications to the original model, there was the inevitable switching out of parts by owners further down the line. Finally, there were the Chinese-made copies that were almost totally undocumented, along with some made in Spain. The result is a researcher’s or collector’s nightmare! But despite the confusion, this much is true: the C96 was the first maschinenpistole/submachine gun ever made, and since it was a major innovation for its time and went on to enjoy considerable success, it has earned its place in history, despite the clouded provenance.

Originally, the Mauser C96 was produced for a 7.63 X 25mm cartridge. There was also a 9mm Parabellum produced, which proved successful. The 9mm Mausers were named the “Red 9″ and had a large red “9″ marked on the grips, to
differentiate them from the 7.63mm version, in order to prevent the confusion of ammunition sizes. Later, many of the original 7.63 models had the barrels bored out to accept 9mm Parabellum cartridges. This was necessary because the C96 had a single one-piece casting for the barrel and receiver, so replacing a worn-out barrel was not an
option. You’d basically have to replace the whole gun. Unfortunately for collectors and researchers, some of those 7.63mm-cum-9mm conversions were also branded with the big red “9″, adding more
confusion to the equation. The original model C96 came with a detachable stock that also doubled as a holster–a clever innovation that DWM, the makers of the famed Luger P08 Parabellum–could’nt resist offering as an option to its own successful pistol. The 7.63mm rounds used by the C96 offered good velocity and penetration, adding
to its success.

In the years before the Great War, (aka World War I) the Mauser C96 and its many variations became very popular, and orders came in from military forces in a number of nations. This allowed the C96 to find
its way around the globe. They were popular with British officers, Red Bolshevik revolutionaries and Chinese militants in the
various skirmishes that plagued China throughout the 20th century. The C96 went on to see action in various wars and revolutions worldwide, and even saw limited use by Germans and others in World War II. As a trivial sidenote, the “blaster” used by Han Solo in Star Wars was based on the Mauser C96. The American National Firearms Act of 1934 precluded most Mauser C96 firearms from finding their way past US shores. Even now, there are estimated to be fewer than 200 of them in circulation in the United States, even though Mauser alone produced over a million of them. By today’s standards, the C96 is an antique and a collectors’ item, and owing to their scarcity in the US, can bring very high prices at auction.

Barry Lee Hands’ career as a firearms engraver began at the tender age of seventeen. Thirty years later, Hands is one of the most respected custom firearm engravers in the world. Earlier this year, he earned the Firearms Engravers Guild of America’s “Best Engraved Rifle” and “Engravers Choice Award of Merit”. An expert on the history of engraving, Hands has penned articles for such prestigious publications as The Double Gun Journal, Shooting Sportsman, Gunmaker and Engraver. He was generous enough to sit down with F.M. ALLEN for this two-part interview and share his thoughts on the ancient art of gunmaking, the pursuit of the elusive “hunt of a lifetime” and what motivates a man to spend so much money on a gun.

FMA: How long does it take you to make a custom rifle from start to finish and how much of that time is spent on the custom engraving?

Hands: A bespoke custom rifle from my shop requires three years. This is from the taking of the clients order with specifications until delivery. There are a number of things that must be done, such as ordering barrels and selecting a stock blank and other parts. Most of these are kept in inventory and the parts become a bespoke rifle when the barrel is fitted to the action and chambered for the selected cartridge. Once everything is ready to go the labor time involved to actually build the rifle is six or seven weeks. That gives us an American classic stocked action with quarter ribs, sights, and/or scope bases as the client specifies, usually on a Mauser, Hagn, or Dakota action. Then it goes to finishing and engraving as has been directed by the client in the original order.

Some projects can be completed sooner as we keep in inventory some almost completed “in the white” projects for those clients which are in need of a custom rifle for the field on short notice. These are in the popular calibers such as .458 Winchester magnum, .416 Rigby, .375 Holland & Holland, .300 Winchester magnum, 7×57, .270 Winchester, and .30-06. These can often be finished in three months or less.

I use only the very best workmen; mostly members of the American Custom Gunmakers Guild. Current project lineups include expert workmanship by men such as Jerry Fisher, Lee Helgeland and Gary Goudy. It takes time to do the very best work.

My engraving adds another 150 to 200 hours, as each example is a unique design.

Hands' Award Winning Work on a Jerry Fisher 7x57.

What single piece of your work are you most proud of?

I recently engraved a piece Jerry Fisher built on a Hagn Action barreled in 7×57. It won “Best Engraved Rifle” and “Engravers Choice Award of Merit” at the Firearms Engravers Guild of America, American Custom Gunmakers Guild exhibition this year. It featured all sculpted fully relieved Arabesque ornament with fully sculpted game scenes. The only gold was on the safety. It is very unusual to win these awards without a lot of gold, and I was humbled to be so honored by my peers. Jerry Fisher and I planned to build a rifle that looked like it could have been built 80 years ago, or today, and it came off really well.

What led to rifle engraving becoming an art form and who were some early pioneers in the craft?

I have spent quite a bit of time and research reflecting upon that question, actually. I’ll only share a few of my thoughts for the sake of brevity.

The highest and most valued form of treasure throughout history has been ornamented weapons. When we look to literature for examples of the value placed on engraved weapons– there are many. In Book VI of the Iliad, Homer describes how Adrestos, defeated in battle, pleads for his life at the point of Menelaos’ spear. Adrestos offers a tempting ransom of “gold and smithied iron” from the treasures in his father’s palace. In addition Homer describes Hector carrying a spear eleven cubits long, having a bronze point, with a “ring of gold on the shaft”.

Achilles is described as godlike, and appropriately, wears armor fashioned by a God, Hephaestus. Homer goes into great detail describing the shield and the chasing, repose, and engraving wrought by this God, which was very ambitious work. The infinite detail, as described by Homer, would have made this a fine piece to examine, but unfortunately this work is lost to us.

The tradition of high value continued throughout history. In Michelangelo’s day the Pope could commission three sculptures by the great artist for the price of a single suit of Negroli armor.

King Louis XIV kept many fine weapons by makers such as Frenel and Froumont, and even after the revolution Napoleon Bonaparte continued the tradition with weapons by Boutet, working in the empire style which I believe influenced greatly the renowned Australian-American engraver Lynton S. M. McKenzie.

In the United States a man by the name of L.D. Nimschke was the preeminent engraver of the second half of the nineteenth century. He did a number of Spencers and Sharps rifles, some Winchesters, and a lot of handguns–an estimated five thousand firearms in all. Also at that time there were Conrad, John, and George of the Ulrich family, three generations who engraved for Winchester for most of one hundred years. The influence of these four men, especially on lever gun and model 21 engraving, can still be seen.

After 1900 there were a number of lesser names and generally the quality of the work slipped, with one noticeable exception, Rudoph J. Kornbrath, who was active from just prior to World War I until his death in 1937. His fine and detailed Germanic and Arabesque creations have had a huge impact on present day American engraving.

Man's obsession with beautiful weapons goes back a long way.

How did you become interested in guns and engraving?

My mother was an art instructor and I spent many hours as a child learning to use chisels and files in jewelry applications and other artwork.

I was lucky my mother liked to shoot, as my father had been with the First Marines in the Second World War and although he was a hunter–he lost his taste for it after returning from Pelelieu and Okinawa.

As she was of Montana extraction, my mother taught me to operate a model 61 .22 repeater from prone position when I was six and I was given my first deer rifle at 14 or so.

Having read all of Jack O’Connor’s books, which were gifts from my grandfather, I kept my weapons clean and well maintained as I had read it was the proper thing to do.

Shortly after high school I was offered a position and training as an engraver at a jewelry company, which I accepted and learned the basics.

Later, I worked with Steve Huff who was trained in Europe to engrave by Rene Delcour. Dan Goodwin was also one of my coworkers. Steve and Dan had engraved guns for Colt and other companies. It was through them that I met Jerry Fisher and Monte Mandarino, who are my colleagues and associates still.

During these years I also worked as an Elk guide in the fall for many seasons, giving me opportunity to form my own opinions on rifles, cartridge selection, and rifle hunting.

In 1991, I went independent as a firearms engraver and it is a fascinating and enjoyable career.

This is the second part of our conversation with legendary firearms engraver Barry Lee Hands. FMA: I

This is the second part of our conversation with legendary firearms engraver Barry Lee Hands.

FMA: If you’re going on a Big 5 trip in Africa and you can only pack one rifle, what are you taking?

Hands: Because of good performance, reasonable recoil, and ease of ammunition availability in bolt rifles– the .458 Winchester would be my first choice. Followed closely by the .416 Rigby. There are many good cartridges to choose from, but these are among my favorites. There are premium loads available for them from soft nose for thin skin to solids for the big boys.

If I was feeling a bit more romantic, I might bring a .470, or even a 450-400 double rifle as they are a joy to handle. Of course one must remember the most important consideration in action selection in dangerous game hunting is familiarity with operation. Don’t choose a weapon with which you are unfamiliar; stick with the tried and true.

If you have the most experience with bolt actions, go with a bolt in one of the large calibers.

If you don’t have a lot of bolt gun experience and came into hunting through wing and clay and break a couple of hundred clay targets each week with a double, then by all means bring a double. You want your gun handling to be second nature, when flawless operation in an instant is required.

The Buffalo Jump, by Barry Lee Hands.

What do you feel is the greatest thrill a rifle hunter can experience?

I have found that going on a long-planned trip while carrying a bespoke rifle properly fit by a competent maker with the options and features chosen through the sportsman’s personal experience tempered by the advice of the maker. Then taking a good or excellent example of the hunters chosen quarry with the guidance and companionship of a good professional hunter and his crew that can provide a full and well-rounded experience, the elusive “hunt of a lifetime” that we all seek.

Mine so far was when I took a 57″ kudu and 8.25″ mountain reedbuck in Songimvelo, South Africa.

The wonderful thing is the scenario can be replayed again and again each season, as the hunters adventure may be born anew with each hunt.

Barry and His 57 inch Kudu Taken in South Africa.

Talk about some reasons that motivate a man to spend $30,000 on a rifle from one of the great gunmakers?

The short answer is: if you have to ask, you shouldn’t do it.

There are many functional weapons that are not built to the highest standards, for the person who is not so particular. However, as we discussed before, there is a historical component in all of this and a tradition of best quality arms going back thousands of years.

Underlying that is something even more basic, that I believe inspired all of these men through history.

A life well lived should be a saga, populated with and lived by great men and women, involved in great adventures, travels, and deeds. It is difficult not to see that when hunting adventures come into this story; the very best in weapons and accoutrements round out the scene.

Another aspect is that as seasons grow shorter and limits smaller, we are left with more time and resources with which to plan and choose equipment- whether it is clothing, knives, or the fine firearm of our choice. Of course, we wish to take with us the very best and the preparation and selection of equipment in itself becomes a larger part of the enjoyment of the anticipated days in the field.

If you couldn’t earn a living making and engraving beautiful rifles, what would you be doing?

The field of fine firearms and engraving is very strong right now and I enjoy it a lot.

When I was younger and guiding elk hunters for an outfitter and reading a lot of Capstick, I wanted to head to Africa to hunt full time, as a professional. Presently, I am almost fifty years of age and think I have passed my window of opportunity for that sort of a life.

If I was looking for another thing to do, well, I know a little cove near Pangandaran in West Java that has a couple shacks and a nice little dive shop….now that could be a good place to spend a couple of seasons.

Most factory “short” bolt actions are designed to fit a .308 Winchester-sized cartridge. Such actions are longer and heavier than they really need to be when used with the smaller varmint cartridges. CZ-USA offers a very compact action that better suits small cartridges. The CZ 527 model has a true micro-length Mauser style action with controlled round feed and 3- or 5-round detachable magazine. Most 527 models sold in the USA feature a crisp, single set trigger. CZ offers various versions of the 527 chambered in .17 Remington, .221 Fireball, .22 Hornet, .222 Remington, .223 Remington, .204 Ruger, and 7.62×39.

Forum member Raidman owns multiple CZ and recommends them: “The CZ 527 American is a great choice in .221 Fireball for a walking varmint gun. They are inexpensive, great shooters and have a superb set trigger that is fully adjustable in both positions. I have 6 in different calibers and all shoot great.”

Award-winning Rifles Starting at $530.00
For centerfire shooters, CZ’s Model 527 has won more awards in the “light rifle” category in Europe than any other rifle…ever. Shown below are some of the variations of the model 527. The “street prices” of model 527s start at about $530.00 for basic models with synthetic stocks, and approach $800.00 for the desirable Varmint Kevlar model ($955.00 MSRP).

The CZ 527 Varmint (wood) model is chambered in .17 Remington, .223 Rem, or .204 Ruger. It features a 24″ heavy barrel, 5-round magazine, and an American-style Turkish walnut stock.

The CZ 527 Carbine is a great “carry-around” varminter, with back-up iron sights, and a 5-round detachable mag. Offered with a handsome Turkish walnut stock, it is chambered in .223 Rem or 7.62×39. Compact, lightweight, and versatile, this is a great multi-purpose “ranch rifle” for predator control.

The Beast i The Carving.

Werdykt: 8/10

“You should go to the range this week.” These are words that will always get my attention. When they

“You should go to the range this week.”

These are words that will always get my attention. When they come from Action Girl, they can almost bring tears to my eyes. This is how I know she loves me.

Things are finally getting warmer here in Maine and the snow banks are slowly creeping back into the woods. All this makes me itch to get my rifles back out after a long winter’s hibernation and spend some quality time making loud noises and punching holes in pieces of paper. Hey… the paper had it coming.

The problem that I’ve encountered lately is defining the time that I should get to go and play. Since I’ve left the Monday through Friday, nine to five world and put most of my energy into caring for the kids and working on the house, it’s been really hard to set aside time to go and do the things that I love. Don’t get me wrong. I love being with my three year old and one year old every day. It’s something that is invaluable and immeasurable and I am unbelievably lucky to have the opportunity. It’s just… sometimes Dad needs some downtime… or rather, Dadtime.

Going off to play does make me feel a little guilty on some level though.

It makes me think of a public service announcement that ran on TV when I was a kid. The ad showed a father going away on yet another golf trip as he left his wife and kids alone and sad looking in the dooryard, one child asking him why he wouldn’t stay. The message was something like, “Did you ever think of having fun with your family instead of being selfish? Dick!” (I’m assuming here that his name was Richard)

I know that I’m hardly in the “absentee dad” category and that I do indeed, get to go have some fun sometimes but it does run through my mind when I’m going off to enjoy myself by myself. Just a few more years of this and maybe I’ll have a little companion who will want to come with me.

Target shooting, one of my very, VERY favorite things to do, has become exceedingly difficult to get around to for several reasons. The first thing that makes it tricky is the fact that I live on an island, and though blasting away with .22’s at the dump might have been perfectly fine a generation ago, those days are most defiantly gone for good. I need to get to the mainland if I’m going to justify owning firearms, and that takes time.

There is no such thing as a “quick trip” to town.

Pack up your bag, walk to the dock, get on board, find a seat and wait. Dock, disembark, walk to the parking garage, find the car, toss everything in and NOW… you’re ready to start. It takes a long time just to get rolling and if you forgot something back home, say… your car keys, you get to use some very colorful language and toss all your plans out the metaphorical window.

When I worked on the mainland every day, I could decide to go shooting during lunch and simply bring a rifle along with me in the morning. Now if I want to go, it’s a special trip and I have to set aside a big block of time and these days, those are few and far between.

So, with taking care of the kids and desperately trying to get a few things done on the house, I just don’t get to go shooting much. That, and the small fact that winter in Maine will make just about anybody think twice about sitting at an out door bench for an hour while you try to feed frozen ammunition into your frozen rifle with your frozen fingers. Some how, frostbite always seems to suck the fun out of any occasion.

This morning, with the help of Action Girl handling the kid wrangling and the lovely spring weather if not full of the scent of tulips and daffodils, at least holding off the rain, I headed out with a bounce in my step. I’d done the right thing and called several friends to see if they wanted to come along, but being the middle of the week, all replied that they just couldn’t make it. I enjoy taking others out to shoot but this was just fine. Time alone at the shooting bench is a wonderful thing.

As I steamed into town working on the first of my two coffee thermoses, I chatted with a few friends and enjoyed the notion that I would have the whole morning off. A rare and blessed thing. The obligatory stop at the local doughnut shop to pick up provisions and I was ready to start the morning right.

The drive there is an easy one and if not exactly beautiful and pastoral, it is at least quick. By the time the first chocolate glazed was reduced to crumbs on my shirt and lap, I was pulling in and switching off the car. It was still early and all the ranges were silent, but not for long if I had anything to say about it.

I’ve been here many times before, alone and with friends, but it’s always more relaxed when I’m there on my own. No one to wait for when setting up targets. No botching a shot because you flinched when the person on the next bench fired just a half second before you. No worrying if you’re going to bean the guy to your right with a hot and freshly emptied shell casing when you pop the breach open with the enthusiasm that comes over you after a perfect shot. None of that for me today!

The last and best thing about shooting alone is music. I don’t know who invented the “ear bud,” but to them, I shall always be thankful. In addition to looking slick, cool and coiling up in your pocket, the little buggers also nestle beautifully under a set of ear protection, thus saving your hearing from the sudden concussion of rifle fire so you can crush it under the din of your favorite music.

It was a Motown morning for me as Dianna Ross and Supremes joined me for a while during target practice.

After an hour and a half, I stood seventy-five yards away from a well holed paper target and just to the left of a sizable pile of empty brass. It was a great morning. Just as I was picking up, our range safety officer happened by to check on things. He’s a nice old gentleman and I’ve been privileged to chat with him on a few occasions. After our initial greeting his eye fell to the bench as his eyebrows arched. “So, what do we have here this morning?” I pulled the bolt open and handing it to him.

“It’s my Grandfather’s Mauser K98k. His brother brought it back from Europe for him and he had it sported into a deer rifle. I don’t usually care for sported combat rifles but this is a top notch job and obviously, it’s got the family history going for it. It’s actually my favorite rifle to shoot. I can’t wait until my kids can come with me to do this.”

He looked on approvingly as I cleaned it in preparation for its ride back home and we talked about shooting. He told me about how he used to go with his son when he was younger and how much fun it was. “He doesn’t like shooting any more though. It’s too bad. I have quite a collection to pass on but no one to pass it on to.”

“Oh…” I groped for a way to ask without being prying. What would cause that? He solved the problem for me and volunteered the answer.

“He joined the Navy and that was fine. He still liked to shoot and we had a lot of fun when he was home, but then he joined the Navy Seals and well… lost his taste for shooting after that.”

I can only imagine what might have happened to cause that change and to be honest, I’d rather not imagine too hard. I’ve never been in the situation where I had to shoot at another human being and I hope to God, I never will. I have the same hope and prayer for my children. I looked down at my rifle and thought about the young German soldier to whom it must have been issued. I wonder what happened to him? I wonder whom he shot at or if he ever even had the chance. Whatever his story, it was lost to time. The rifle was mine now and I was in charge of its use.

As I drove back to my island home and awaiting family, I thought about how enjoyable it was to have some time to practice a hobby that I enjoyed so much and then about my range-friend with his futureless collection. I truly do enjoy the sport but what he told me was sobering.

One of my Grandfathers taught me how to shoot and the other has supplied me with my two favorite guns to take out. I hope that someday I’ll get to take both my children out to enjoy days like this with me but if they don’t, I’ll hang on to my collection for as long as I can. Who knows? Maybe I’ll get the chance, years from now to sit down with a cup of coffee, my Grandfather’s .22 and my own grandchildren. I’ll explain how their Great-Great Grandfather got it for Christmas when he was just eight, and then I’ll show them how to use it. When they’re strong enough, I’ll get out the Mauser too.

Firearms are nothing to be taken lightly and I treat them with the respect they deserve, just like I was taught to. I feel that it’s an important lesson to pass along. Short Stack and Lulu Belle may not want to have anything to do with them, I know, but they will understand how to handle them. I hope they will at least humor their Dad at times and go with him to the range for a sunny morning of shooting.

It’s warm and bright this morning. The wind is barely perceptible and I still haven’t had breakfast. It’s just right for heading back to shoot some more. Not today though. It’s time to work; shooting can come later. Anyway, waiting for it makes it all the more special when I do go.

Maybe next week…
