Game 5 was much better than the rest of the series has been for us. Finally, the old November/Decemb

Game 5 was much better than the rest of the series has been for us. Finally, the old November/December line combinations worked out. It was important to get Milan Lucic and Phil Kessel back on the score sheet, and we did it.

My concerns going into Game 6 are twofold: First of all, we need to keep Carolina’s aggressive players from doing any more damage to us physically. What Scott Walker did to Aaron Ward was inexcusable, and warranted a suspension. Ward wasn’t looking to fight Walker. He didn’t know Walker was going to throw a punch, and was given no opportunity to defend himself as such. The automatic suspension was at LEAST as fair as what Lucic got for hitting Maxim Lapierre a few weeks ago. If Ward does indeed have a broken orbital bone, Walker should be sitting.

Second of all, we need to keep Carolina’s three most important players from dictating the course of the game. Eric Staal needs to be contained (if not stopped completely), Cam Ward needs to be pressured with Bruins around the net at all times, and Jussi Jokinen needs to be eliminated from all relevance. Jokinen has been Carolina’s magic man all playoffs, for one; he nearly dealt a death-blow to the team by slashing Zdeno Chara’s foot, for two. That’s a guy you want to minimize.

The lines seem to be clicking better now than ever before in the series, however. Lucic-Marc Savard-Kessel is back to its old potency, hopefully. Scratching Blake Wheeler doesn’t do much for our team in the skills department, but the physical presence of Byron “SonuvaBitz” is always welcome. Putting Bitz with David Krejci and Michael Ryder at least gives those two guys the possibility of opening up more space on the ice, with Bitzy able to clear guys like Dennis Seidenberg and Joni Pitkanen out of the way.

And if Tim Thomas plays as well as he did last game in earning his first career playoff shutout (at least one of those first-period saves was flat-out heroic), we should see a seventh game back here in Beantown. We can do this. One game at a time.

Game 6 tomorrow night in Carolina. Go Bruins.

The Bruins enter Montreal tonight on a mission: put Les Miserables down 3-0 in this playoff series,

The Bruins enter Montreal tonight on a mission: put Les Miserables down 3-0 in this playoff series, all but eliminating them. As more than one person has said over the past few days, this game is the season for Montreal, and it’ll be interesting to see how they play from the opening faceoff. Will they focus on the dirty tactics we saw in Game 1 and the early part of Game 2, or attempt to buckle down and score goals right away?

I think a major telltale sign will be who the team puts on the ice for the opening faceoff. Alex Kovalev and Saku Koivu will probably play first line right wing and center, respectively; the difference-maker will be the left wing. If it’s Alex Tanguay, we’re going to see the cleanest game of the series. If it’s Georges Laraque, it’s going to be more of the same. If I remember correctly, Tanguay has been on a line with Glen Metropolit and Chris Higgins – where Laraque really ought to be.

And if they start Tom Kostopoulos, Maxim Lapierre, and Guillaume Latendresse, prepare for all-out war.

Speaking of lines, I’m pretty sure that with Milan Lucic out, the Bruins are going to ice the following forward pairings:

P.J. Axelsson; Marc Savard; Phil Kessel

Blake Wheeler; David Krejci; Michael Ryder

Chuck Kobasew; Patrice Bergeron; Mark Recchi

Byron Bitz; Stephane Yelle; Shawn Thornton

What’s so great about this team, in my opinion, is that we’ve got scoring depth down all of the top three lines. Even the fourth-liners can put the puck in the net when called upon. Remember how well that second line played together early in the year.

The obvious casualty for Game 4 will be Bitz, leaving the Bruins with one reserve. Matt Hunwick and Andrew Ference, who would be the other two reserves, are both injured, meaning the Bruins may have to call up a defenseman from Providence (Johnny Boychuk?), which is in a first-round playoff series of its own.

Looking at the three other Game 3s to take place thus far in this year’s playoffs, it’s hard to predict what will happen in this game. Every Game 3 to take place so far has been in a completely different situation. In one situation, the team up 2-0 in the series won; in another, the team up 2-0 in the series lost; in the third, the higher seed won to break a 1-1 series tie.

The first situation, which features the Vancouver Canucks and St. Louis Blues, may be the closest comparison to our series, with Vancouver playing the role of Boston and St. Louis playing the role of Montreal. Vancouver has handily outplayed St. Louis, behind the strong netminding of Roberto Luongo and a power play that connected three times last night. They’ve taken poor penalties, for sure (Willie Mitchell had six minutes in one play last night), but they’ve shown why they’re the higher seed. They walked into St. Louis’ house, jumping from the fact that the Blues were playing in their first home playoff game in five years and a week, and walked out victorious – as the Bruins need to do tonight.

St. Louis, however, has been sloppy, only scoring one goal in the first two games and only three in total thus far. They’ve only held the lead for 24:46 out of 180 minutes thus far in the series. They’ve handled the puck poorly, and watching their power play last night was a joke – watching T.J. Oshie make poor, quick passes back and forth with a teammate is not the way one wants their power play to run. Like Montreal is missing Robert Lang and Andrei Markov, the Blues are missing Paul Kariya and Erik Johnson, but that serves as no excuse for being unable to pull something together; in each case the teams have been missing those players for a substantial chunk of time now.

Last night was do or die in front of the home crowd for St. Louis, and they died – as we want Montreal to tonight.

One final thought: There are a few integral parts of this Bruins team that I haven’t been talking about very much all series. They are Zdeno Chara, Dennis Wideman, and Tim Thomas, and the fact that I’ve been neglecting to mention them means simply that they’ve been doing their jobs. Chara has been a minute-muncher all series, spending the second-most time on the ice of all skaters in Game 1 (behind Montreal’s Roman Hamrlik) and the most in Game 2. Denny was third in ice time overall in Game 1, and third on the Bruins in Game 2, registering over 20 minutes in each. Thomas has only let up three goals, including a beauty by Kovalev in Game 1, and hasn’t let the pressure of beating our longtime nemeses get to him. Hey, they say that defense wins championships…

Game 3 tonight in Montreal. Go Bruins.

I had to laugh at that headline. Can you really say a pitcher gave a vintage performance if that pitcher’s only twenty-five years old? Apparently. Jon Lester’s first two starts were nothing like his third. If it’s possible to describe a young pitcher’s performance as vintage, now would certainly be the time and yesterday would certainly be the performance. In his first two starts, Lester had a total of five strikeouts. Yesterday, he had nine, one shy of his career high. The cut fastball was on. Seven innings, two walks, no runs. He gave up two hits to Robert Andino and two to Ty Wigginton, and that was it. He continues to be undefeated against Baltimore. And he even showed off his pickoff move, catching Wigginton at first in the third inning for his third of the year.

I have to say George Kottaras did a great job yesterday. He started to give Tek the day off, one of quite a few this year as Tito’s strategy will be to rest the captain a little more often. Kottaras caught Lester once before in Spring Training, which isn’t much preparation, so hats off to the new guy.

Heading into yesterday’s contest, our bullpen gave up only one earned run in nineteen and two-thirds innings and posted an ERA of 0.46 in its last three games. And the corps did not disappoint. Ramon Ramirez was spot-on as usual in the eighth. Needless to say, I’m enjoying the benefits of that trade, and I think Coco Crisp is too, because he’s a starter by trade and starters need to play regularly. True, Jacoby’s in the middle of a slump right now, but he’s already started to come around, and he’s certainly having no trouble at all in the field. No errors in 149 games; can we say Gold Glove? Takashi Saito, on the other hand, gave up a run in the ninth, so while Ramirez is still maintaining his 0.00 ERA, Saito’s pushing 6.23. Paps worked the previous two games, and pitching him three days in a row is pretty much out of the question, so Saito, having been a closer, was the logical choice. In his career he’s converted 82 of 92 save opportunities, so we know he has it in him somewhere. I just hope he gets the kinks out so I don’t have to hold my breath every time he steps out there.

The offense was quiet but got the job done anyway. One RBI for Mikey Lowell and one for Pedroia for a final score of 2-1. Ellsbury went two for four, the only multi-hit performance, so slowly but steadily he’s getting there. Drew went hitless, ending his hitting streak at six games. Papi went hitless, which unfortunately is something we’re coming to expect. He’s only had one extra-base hit all year. We know he’ll snap out of it, but when? I think before the series with New York would be as good a time as any.

Beckett’s suspension was reduced from six to five games, so with some creative finagling he won’t have to miss a start. Honestly, he shouldn’t even have been suspended at all. Just sayin’. Brad Wilkerson has decided to retire after an eight-year Major League career. And David Wells will be getting in the booth for TBS in the next few weeks. Wells broadcasting baseball? This should be interesting. I think it’s safe to say Bud Selig will be listening.

So we’re officially on a winning streak! Four games! And we’re tied with Baltimore for third, only three games out of first. Toronto’s still up there with New York in second and Tampa Bay in last. It’s only a matter of time before the AL East and the universe at large are made right again with Boston on top. Today it’s morning ball; the Patriots Day game will start at 11:00AM. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a morning game. Anyway, Masterson will be starting in lieu of Dice-K, and if we win today we sweep all four against the Orioles. Nice.

Game 3 of Bruins-Habs tonight in Montreal. We’ll get it done. Even if Milan Lucic was suspended for tonight because it wasn’t clear whether it was his stick or his glove that hit Maxim Lapierre’s helmet. I personally thought I saw his glove. But the point is we’re good enough to weather it for a game and come out on top. And there’s nothing quite like showing your arch-rivals who’s boss in their house.

He lost his temper, and now he’s out for Game 3 in Montreal. Dammit, Looch.

Let’s be fair: This has been a dirty series. (Do I really need to post the Youtube links again? There are just far too many examples of dirty play by both teams.) Keep in mind my bias, but Les Miserables have played dirtier, in my opinion – hitting players after goals, causing that post-Game 1 brawl in which Mike Komisarek scratched up Matt Hunwick’s eyelid, that Tom Kostopoulos hit on Hunwick that led to his spleen being removed (get well, buddy!), et cetera.

Then again, also keep in mind that the Bruins have done some pretty rough things in retaliation to Montreal cheap shots. They’ve lost their tempers. Keep in mind what Patrice Bergeron did to Josh Gorges, and this Lucic offense, deemed suspendable by the league officials.

It makes sense to me, I guess – Milan Lucic did hit Maxim Lapierre with a hand in which he was holding his stick. That is reckless usage of the stick, and it shouldn’t go unpunished.

But at the same time, anyone with a brain inside their skull knows that Montreal’s been playing dirty this whole series, because the only way they can win is to throw the B’s off their game. If we lose our temper, we let them get right back into the game (remember April 9, when we blew a 3-1 lead and had to come back to force overtime?), and it takes us a long time to get back on track. Surely, at least one of the members of the “Goon Squad” (the aforementioned Kostopoulos, Komisarek, and Lapierre, as well as Georges Laraque, Guillaume Latendresse, and others) has done something worthy of suspension?

Maybe attacking Phil Kessel after he scored the empty-netter in Game 1? I guess it’s too late now.

Lost in all the hullabaloo of Lucic’s suspension, however, is the triumphant return of Byron Bitz to the Bruins’ lineup, as part of the fourth line, alongside Stephane Yelle and Shawn Thornton. Bitzy earned his way onto this team in the middle of the season, has played with more heart than just about anybody, and has contributed both with the body and the biscuit, endearing himself to the Boston fans. He’ll be a welcome addition on the ice, as long as he doesn’t lose control like Looch did.

This also has ramifications for Blake Wheeler, as he’ll rejoin David Krejci and Michael Ryder, instead of playing with Yelle and Thornton – and that line was pretty dangerous towards the beginning of the year. If they can regain that chemistry, look out.

Game 3 tomorrow night in Montreal. Go Bruins.

(P.S.: Because not adding his name in a post would be sacrilege: Denny.)

Last night’s win was important. It set a tone for the series. It confirmed that Boston, even when they blow 2-goal leads, is always dangerous, and can come back into a hockey game at any time. I’m real proud of the boys for sticking with the game and not giving up, even when Les Miserables (I’m clever, huh?) came at them hard in the second period.

We just have so many weapons this year. It’s fantastic.

I think a pressing issue, however, is the way that the Montreal players handle themselves on the ice. I complain about this every time we play against them. My dad, who used to go to games in the old Boston Garden, said that Montreal has always played that way. I hadn’t really paid attention until this year. Sure, I was mad when Mike Ribeiro flopped – bigtime – a few years ago, but I didn’t have much to back that up then. (Also, I was about 12. Gimme a break.)

This year, however, half of Les Miserables really earn the nickname. Tom Kostopoulos, Mike Komisarek, Georges Laraque, Mathieu Dandenault, Josh Gorges, Maxim Lapierre, and Guillaume Latendresse (HOW DARE YOU FIGHT DENNY), all of whom dressed last night, act like thugs on the ice, perhaps because they realize that the only way that their team can win is by distracting their opponents’ focus from playing hockey. It’s kind of a brilliant plan – throw their opponents off and score when they’re angry. (Speaking of Habs goals, Alex Kovalev’s goal was pretty. I’ll be a man and admit that, much as I hate Kovalev.)

Yes, you can make arguments that the Bruins have their share of players who are similarly rough – Milan Lucic (see Komisarek link), Shawn Thornton, and Byron Bitz (who did not dress last night) come to mind. The difference in this series, however, is that we know that these players are not the ones instigating the fights, simply because they don’t need to. Boston is a superior team in terms of skill and talent this year. Fighting slows them down, makes them lose that focus, and allows opponents to score goals.

As such, I’m pretty bothered when the referees call matching misconduct penalties – and no instigator penalties, despite what seems like brutally obvious circumstances – when the teams scuffle.

The best example of this last night was when Phil Kessel scored on an empty net with 13 seconds left to go in the game. After putting the puck in the net, Kessel began to celebrate, as the aforementioned Lapierre skated towards him (see link under Lapierre’s name above). Kessel obviously saw something in Lapierre’s expression that warranted him putting his hands out, and the two began to scuffle, thus drawing in the rest of the skaters. Lapierre and Milan Lucic – whose interception of a Mathieu Schneider pass set up the goal in the first place – received matching roughing penalties and 10-minute misconducts.

What bothers me is the fact that, while Lapierre clearly started the brawl by hitting Kessel about five seconds after the goal was scored, Lucic also got a penalty for jumping in to defend his teammate. Sound fair to you? What Lapierre did was classless… and I like to think I’d be just as mad at any player, regardless of team.

It also shows that the instigator penalty, as it currently exists, is useless. Because, often times, no fighting majors are called in brawls, the instigator cannot be called; and even when something determined to be a “fight” occurs, the instigator is only called about 6 percent of the time.

Somebody needs to rewrite the rules here. Rewrite the instigator rule so that, whether a fight is staged or not, the player whose actions are most egregious in starting the fight gets an extra two minutes. If it leads to a brawl, give that player a game misconduct. Enforce the instigator penalty in every fight and ESPECIALLY every brawl.

It’s the best way to clean up the game, and make it so players with at least some skill, like Lucic, Thornton, and Bitz – instead of one-dimensional goons – are the ones with jobs. Think about it. Why would a team waste a roster spot on a guy who’s always going to put them on the penalty kill? Those guys don’t deserve NHL jobs. I don’t think that’s the kind of league that true hockey fans want.

Hitting? Yes. Rough play? Yes. People whose sole reasons for existence are to fight on skates? No.

Yes, I’m more supportive of this idea because it would basically put the Bruins on a perpetual power play in this particular playoff series, but I think the idea has merit. It’d also force Les Miserables to be less like their fans – loud, boorish, and not as skilled in the art of hockey as they used to be.

Game 2 on Saturday. Go Bruins.
