I bought this drive about six months ago from Best Buy for a steal and have been using it everyday for backup and now Time Machine backups weekly.  It has worked great on Mac and PC.  I formatted it a few times for temporary jobs I was doing in Windows XP.  I used it today to do a Time Machine restore job just to time it, and it took about 1 1/2 hours for a 21GB restore job with USB2.  Here is an Amazon review.

Los dos cumplen la misma función y no es otra que el diagnóstico de nuestro disco duro, el SeaTools para los discos duros SEAGATE y MAXTOR, y el Samsung EsTools para SAMSUNG y el resto de marcas.
Esto es así por una sencilla razón, el SeaTools diferencia entre las marcas de los discos duros y para los que no soporta, deshabilita algunas funciones, mientras que el Hutil no hace distinciones y soporta cualquier marca de disco duro.

Aparte de comprobar la integridad del disco duro, incorporan otra serie de herramientas, como el formateo a bajo nivel, muy útil en caso de querer dejar el disco sin partición, tal cual vino de fábrica.

In ihrer Support-Datenbank bietet die Firma Seagate jetzt Firmware-Updates für zahlreiche Laufwerke an, die aufgrund eines Fehlers plötzlich ausfallen können. Dabei nennt der Hersteller auch Details, welche Laufwerke aus den Serien Barracuda 7200.11, Barracuda ES.2, SV35 und DiamondMax 22 tatsächlich betroffen sind.

So sind offenbar die Laufwerke ST3500320AS, ST3640330AS, ST3750330AS und ST31000340AS aus der Reihe Barracuda 7200.11 mit der Firmware SD15, SD16, SD17, SD18, SD19 oder AD14 fehlerbehaftet. Seagate empfiehlt in diesem Fall eine Aktualisierung auf SD1A. Alle anderen Modelle der Reihe Barracuda 7200.11 sollen nur von dem Fehler betroffen sein, wenn sie nicht mit einer “CC- oder LC-Firmware” arbeiten. Ein Firmware-Update hierfür ist noch in Arbeit.

Just a word of warning: Try to avoid messaging via FB because I barely ever check my inbox on there. I don’t get message notifications either so it’s pure luck that I looked up to the main toolbar and saw the number ‘1′ sitting there.

Anyway, netbooks… the best netbook on the market if you’re considering getting one is the Samsung NC10. But don’t get that just yet because there are updated models just around the corner. The NC20, a review of which you can read here, is to be released soon, so stick around if you wanna get the best of the best.

As for an external hard drive, Maxtor is unbeatable. Their latest effort, the One Touch 4 Plus, comes in four sizes – the biggest is a terabyte (1000GB if you’re wondering), and that costs a measly £88. Then I re-read the email and discovered that he’d put ‘external DVD drive’, and not ‘external hard disk’. Silly me.

Sorry, I read your message incorrectly. I thought you wrote external hard disk whereas you actually wrote external DVD drive.

For this you’ll get a heck of lot, including LightScribe abilities. Sure, you may not think you need that, but you never know when the time will come when you wanna burn your own CD and automatically label it. It’ll connect to your computer via a USB 2.0 cable which is included in the deal. What’s more, the Slimline looks really nice, unlike most grey, rectangular external DVD drives. Backing up your data is a must for student, businessman, travelers or any people that do have a sensitive and important data stored in their desktop computer, net book and laptop. We all know that machines such us computer aren’t perfect and they do tend to break somehow or worst in the most time that you really need it. To safe guard all this information and to protect you for future lost of data in your laptop, net book and desktop computer you need to invest for an external hard drive portable wise or a stand alone external hard drive will do. The storage capacity of these hard drives varies from the cost of the unit. The cheapest one starts as low as $70 and will give you a storage capacity of approximately 80gb and it varies on where you buy and what manufacturer you choose. The Highest price would be $200 and up and that will give you a storage capacity of approximately 500gb and higher, again it depends on the store that sells it and the manufacturer that you choose. For those that have a tight budget you could also back-up your data using a DVD disc if you have a DVD burner. This will take time and effort since each disc could only carry a storage capacity of 4.2gb. Today I cleaned the computer’s room, so I decided to take a photo of it.

Well, here is something to talk about and think about. Hard drives. We all have one in our computers to store our “digital lives”. We all dread the day that we might lose this “life” of ours. Thanks to the internet most of the important stuff like emails are safe. Well I have had a rather tragic incident in the past week.

My external hard drive kinda died on me. Well not really died, just having some power supply problems. It had been set up to back up my computer with time machine every hour and this was all fine and dandy for a week while it worked. One day I just put the mac to sleep and went out, when I got home although I hadn’t realized until late in the night the drive had stopped working. There was no power coming to it. This was on a Saturday. May I just point out now that it is a Maxtor Basics drive made by seagate so it has three year warranty. I had to wait till Monday afternoon to call tech support to have it checked out. They concluded that the power supply might be the problem and obviously said that they would send me a new one in about two weeks time. It hasn’t been two weeks yet so I’m still waiting for it.

The bad news is that if the power supply is not the issue, the hard drive is. I will have to send the drive back to Singapore from New Zealand to have it replaced and this could cost me about $40. I am hoping this does not happen and the new power supply fixes it up.

The overriding concern here is that some brands and makes are just better than others and Maxtor has had a bad spell for a while now, I was just silently hoping I would not become part of the lot that was bad; however, I’m happy that it happened early on so that I will be compensated within warranty. The other concern is my cost to send it as well as the risk to send it so far away for replacement; who really wants to do this? Thirdly, they will not send a new drive but rather a refurbished one (aka repaired one). This drive could possibly be a four year old drive that they have repaired compared to my 3 month old drive.

Some thing to think about Seagate. Ideally we want a new drive.

Anyone have any similar experiences with Maxtor or Seagate or any comments let me know.

You might find that you drop your hard drive only a meter or so from the ground on to a soft surface, or even dropped it on to the sofa after a long day.

Now the drive is clicking or not detected there are only a few things for you to do without making it worst.

• Plug the drive in if the drive is clicking then the only thing you can do that might work is to leave the drive in a cool dry place for 24 hours and try connecting it again. If you are lucky you might get a hour to copy important data.

• If you find that there is no clicking but the drive is still spinning then it could be that the external enclosure has failed. In this case take the drive out of the casing and connect the drive directly to a PC you should be able to drag the files off.

• If the drive is not spinning and sounds if it’s trying to spin. This will indicate that there is a problem with the motor where the drop has cause the motor to be stuck or misaligned. In this case you will need to go to a professional data recovery specialist.

Salgo de casa directo hacia La Central del Raval en busca de dos ejemplares del diccionario español-marroquí de Francisco Moscoso. Voy sin muchas esperanzas, puesto que es el penúltimo recurso que me queda, llevo un mes poniendo patas arriba las librerías de la ciudad en busca de este escurridizo ejemplar. No lo tienen y deberán pedirlo, como siempre. No sé porqué entonces lo tienen en su página web, como en tantas otras librerías. Si no lo tenéis, simplemente, no los añadais a vuestras mentirosas bases de datos. Suerte tengo de mi librero de barrio, siempre dispuesto a resolver mis problemas con las editoriales que editan un número rídiculo de ejemplares por miedo a la quiebra. Si se dejaran de publicar tantas obras premiadas y libros mediáticos y apostar más por obras de calidad indudable otro gallo cantaría.

Bueno, esta bien, me voy a dar una vuelta por Happy Books. Un par de ejemplares de Bukowski, Peleando a la contra y Música de cañerias, de Auster la recopilación de testimonios en Creía que mi padre era Dios. También La hermandad de la uva de John Fante y En el camino, mítico On the road, de Jack Kerouac, todos ellos pasan a formar parte de mi lista de adquisiciones pendientes. El ejemplar de Moby Dick de Alianza Editorial que vi en televisión hace tiempo sigue por las estanterias de todas las librerias, pero antes de comprarlo necesito saber si mi querida Cátedra no la ha editado antes. Pero hay muy pocas obras de Cátedra por aquí así que me voy directo a El Corte Inglés, a una manzana, donde sé que tienen un armario sólo para esta editorial. Antes de salir veo una colección de facsímiles editados por Maxtor, algunos són curiosos, como Juegos de manos ó sea arte de hacer diabluras, de 1864 donde se describen trucos tan antiguos como nuestro juego de trileros rambleros.

Cuando llego a El Corte Inglés veo que también tienen una sección de facsímiles Maxtor y entre tan curiosas obras encuentro una que hasta ahora solo encontré en librerías de viejo muy especiales o en Internet. Se trata de la traducción de Miguel Jiménez Monteserín del Malleus maleficarum o El Martillo de las brujas, obra de Jacobo Sprenger y Enrique Institoris, dos monjes dominicos de la Alemania Occidental del siglo XV, en la decadencia de la Edad Media. El libro consta de tres partes bien diferenciadas: La primera discute sobre la posibilidad, según la fe católica, de la existencia de la brujería. La segunda es un compendio de testimonios ‘reales’ de Inquisidores y remedios para los maleficios. La tercera, y la más aburridas según el prologista, es un compendio de métodos inquisitvos -por ejemplo como realizar un interrogatorio a una bruja- y leyes de jurisprudencia inquisitorial. Es una edición cuidada que, a diferencia de sus compañeras de colección, la tipografía original del medievo se ha substituido por una fuente actual para hacer una lectura más agradable y eso se agradece muchísimo, pero hay que decir que de facsímil sólo tiene la tipografía gótica de la cubierta.

Recuerdo que en primaria una profesora nos explico cómo en la Edad Media se podía averiguar si una mujer era una bruja. Le ataban un peso a los pies, supongo que normalmente una roca pesada, y la lanzaban a aguas profundas o pozos. Si la mujer escapaba de la treta, quizas volando en una escoba, se confirmaría su naturaleza de bruja, en caso que pereciera entonces quedarían desmentidas las acusaciones y falsos testimonios. Supongo que luego algún monje rezaría por su alma y oficiaría el entierro. A la espera de leerlo con detenimiento para hacer un post monográfico.

Siempre acabo sucumbiendo y comprando algun libro, no hay más. La lecturina siempre acaba venciéndome, Doctor. Y para colmo una dependiente de la sección de libros me acaba de confirmar que Cátedra no tiene editada Moby Dick pero sí otras obras de Melville. Así que acabo sucumbiendo y comprando  la edición de Alianza, que no tiene una introducción donde se explique en que circunstancias escribió Melville esta obra, si él se había embarcado en algun ballenero alguna vez o si ideó toda la obra con el fin de contar un viaje o si quería que fuera leída como una metáfora sobre la persecución de nuestros sueños y miedos más profundos. ¡Por eso amo a Cátedra! Estas cosas ayudan a leer una novela deteniéndose en pasajes que de otro modo pasarían inadvertidos. Para contrarestar esto tenemos una introducción repleta de frases relacionadas con ballenas, con su autor y obras a pie de cita, algo que a los lectores de culo inquieto nos gusta para poder tirar del hilo y tener una buena biblioteca. Casi 900 páginas que harán de este sedentario verano una delicia, seguro.
