My 2000 EK Civic needed new summer tires after my last tires (Nexen N3000) grenaded on the highway.

My 2000 EK Civic needed new summer tires after my last tires (Nexen N3000) grenaded on the highway. For my 16″ rims I wanted something that had a little higher aspect ratio sidewall for added comfort (not performance), so I began looking for a 205/45/16 performance summer tire. Due to a shortage of summer tires in Toronto (I can’t backup that claim but it sure felt like it), I settled on a dedicated summer tire in the Maxxis MA-Z1 Victra.

Maxxis MA-Z1 Victra summer performance tire

Here are is the tire specifications from the Maxxis website

ULTRA HIGH PERFORMANCE RADIAL

MA-Z1 is an ultra high-performance radial featuring an aggressive unidirectional tread design. The MA-Z1 offers excellent cornering and handling ability as well as superior wet and dry traction.

Aggressive unidirectional tread design

Solid center rib with stiff shoulder blocks

Specially designed rim protector

High-tensile steel belts

Advanced silica compound for improving wet traction and rolling resistance

Excellent cornering and handling stability

Superior wet and dry traction

Swift response and minimum noise level at high speeds

UTQG 280 AAA

Although you may not recognize the name, Maxxis has been producing tires for more than 40 years. Bicycle tires that is … in China. They are actually a Taiwanese company and in more recent years have expanded their product line considerably, distributing in over 160 countries. In fact I just noticed that on my 10 year old Giant mountain bike (Giant is the brand, it’s not made for Shaq) the 10 year old tires are Maxxis.

Mounting the tires was nothing special other than the tire mounting Jimmy told me that 2 of them were borderline balanced. He showed me the number of weights he had to use. Although my rims aren’t bend, it’s probably more the rim’s fault than the tires. I suppose they could equally be to blame but again, I have no way to back that up.

In the handling department I actually gave these tires a thorough workout at 2 local road course tracks. I haven’t taken my EK Civic to the track in it’s 300,000km lifespan but I figured I should give it a try as my other car is in the shop. These tires held up very well to the abuse I put on them at Mosport DDT and Dunnville while I was three-wheeling around most corners. They give up their grip quite progressively and give you decent of feedback when it’s doing it. At 32 psi the sidewalls rolled over as one would expect and at 34 psi they wouldn’t. So I know 32 is good sweetspot for my conditions. Despite the abuse the tires didn’t chuck too badly and wear was very acceptable.

On the street and highway I don’t notice that the tire noise is very loud. I have a moderate tolerance to road noise as the Civic is so loud at highway speed anyways I don’t notice anything above that. The Nexen’s were awful for this as they howled like wolf at a full moon … being spanked by a bear also howling at the moon … and the moon was howling.

I haven’t pushed the car in the rain but I have driven over 100km in several downpours … summer in Toronto this year has been unusually cool and wet. They have performed admirably and I have no confidence issues with them.

In summary, the Maxxis MA-Z1s are a competitively priced performance summer tire with above average handling characteristics, good dry performance, good feedback, decent road-noise levels and acceptable wet grip. If you can get them at a good price I think they are definitely work consideration.

Sept 2009 Update:

I’ve got a few track day videos where I’m riding on these tires. The 4-some of videos is actually a lap time comparison between the tired stock suspension vs. Tokico, but the tires were the same in both pairs of videos.

Also here is a closer picture of one of the tires after 3 track days. Oh and the bumper scuff is from rubbing a pylon

Cycling racer Steve Larsen passed away at the age of 39 Tuesday night in an untimely death initially

Cycling racer Steve Larsen passed away at the age of 39 Tuesday night in an untimely death initially blamed on a heart attack. Now word comes that the autopsy found no evidence of a heart attack, but the exact cause remains under investigation. In any case, Larsen died too young and is a testament to carpe diem, or as my riding buddy Jim would say, carpe limitem (seize the trail!). He was a road racer, a mountain bike racer, a triathlete and a cyclocross racer, yet he died while running.

Larsen was a well-known competitor in his prime, raced with Lance Armstrong on the Motorola team, but I came to associate his name with a great mountain-biking race/cross country tire he designed for Maxxis called the Larsen TT (a second one was the Mimo; both were named after his kids). Larsen was a Davis, Calif. native who lived in Bend, OR, named recently by Mountain Bike Action as the best mountain biking town in America (yet he died while…). We wish his wife Carrie and 5 children well.

2008’s World Cup number 3 Tracy Moseley won the first round of the Maxxis Cup by nearly 20 seconds over her nearest rival, showing she’s in good form for 2009. Fellow UK riders Jessica Stone and Katy Curd placed second and fifth respectively (apparently Katy had a mechanical), with third place taken by France’s Sophie Borderes, and fourth byAriadna de Barros of Spain.

The race was held on a dry, dusty track in Gouveia, Portugal, which must have suited Tracy’s new Trek. The first round of the Maxxis cup is often a good pre-World Cup indicator of who’s riding well, but most of the Elite Women World Cup top ten from 2008 didn’t ride. Rachel Atherton still hasn’t raced since injuring her shoulder, Sabrina Jonnier is in the US getting her new bike, Emmeline Ragot was in NZ… Anyway, we will have to wait till April for a real show-down. A lot of the Elite riders are heading to South Africa for the SA National Series a week before Round 1 of the World Cup.

Two-time World Downhill Champion Sabrina Jonnier has been racing in New Zealand during the NZ Nation

Two-time World Downhill Champion Sabrina Jonnier has been racing in New Zealand during the NZ National Series. She joins a growing number of overseas riders choosing to spend their off season down under, and deciding that NZ rules for the variety of trails, lack of dangerous bugs and bushfires, and the fact that Aotearoa has some serious mountains unlike Australia!

Sabrina has been in NZ for a month, starting out in Queenstown, every DH’ers paradise. Unfortunately she crashed in practice and was unable to race the Coronet round of the Nationals, but was back on the bike to take the win in Blenheim. Nelson was her favourite track even in the wet, and along with Emmeline Ragot’s stellar performance she proved that the fast French chicks are almost in a league of their own.

This season, Sabrina is swapping her black and pink Ironhorse Sunday for a new Rocky Mountain, and is still riding for Team Maxxis at the world cups in their new guise as Maxxis-Rocky Mountain. In New Zealand she’s been having an awesome time travelling with Amy Laird and team-mate Cameron Cole – in fact, such an awesome time that she doesn’t want to go home!

by U Urbano

Motorcycle mechanics are responsible for repairing and overhauling two wheeled motorized vehicles. Some of the most common are motorcycles, mopeds, motor scooters, dirt bikes, and all-terrain vehicles. Mechanics may perform a wide variety of repair and service duties, including transmission work, engine repair, brake jobs, ignition work, and even minor body repairs. Most motorcycle mechanics are employed by dealers that service a limited number of makes and models of motorcycle. For this reason, mechanics tend to specialize in servicing only the types of vehicle that their employers sell. Work hours tend to be seasonal, with heaviest workloads occurring in the spring and summer.

Education, Certification, Licensing

The ideal motorcycle mechanic possesses a combination of classroom and garage experience. High school graduates are preferred by employers and initial training in the profession usually includes small engine courses acquired through high school, vocational school, or community college programs. A growing number of motorcycle mechanics today graduate from formal motorcycle programs beyond high school. A large amount of a mechanic’s training takes place on the job and a few years experience is usually necessary for full proficiency in the trade.

Because motorcycle mechanics typically service the specific models of the company that employs them, they need to learn the specific nuances of their particular model. For this reason, employers often send mechanics and trainees to specialized courses conducted by motorcycle manufacturers or distributors. These courses, which usually do not exceed two weeks in duration, upgrade the mechanic’s skill set and provide updated information on repairing new models. There are no nationally recognized certifications in this field; however, the short term training offered by manufacturers and distributors typically concludes with an industry certification. These certifications can be valuable to a mechanic’s employment opportunities and future salary.
