Today is Monday, May 18, the 138th day of 2009. There are 227 days left in the year.

Today’s Highlight in History:

On May 18, 1896, the U.S. Supreme Court, in Plessy v. Ferguson, endorsed “separate but equal” racial segregation, a concept the court renounced 58 years later with Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka.

On this date:

In 1642, Montreal was founded by French colonists.

In 1804, the French Senate proclaimed Napoleon Bonaparte emperor.

In 1920, Pope John Paul II was born Karol Wojtyla in Wadowice, Poland.

In 1926, evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson vanished while visiting a beach in Venice, Calif.; she reappeared more than a month later, claiming to have been kidnapped.

In 1927, a schoolhouse in Bath, Mich., was blown up with explosives planted by local farmer Andrew Kehoe, who then set off a dynamite-laden automobile; the attacks killed 38 children and six adults, including Kehoe, who’d earlier killed his wife.

In 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed a measure creating the Tennessee Valley Authority.

In 1944, during World War II, Allied forces finally occupied Monte Cassino in Italy after a four-month struggle that claimed some 20,000 lives.

In 1953, Jacqueline Cochran became the first woman to break the sound barrier as she piloted a Canadair F-86 Sabre jet over Rogers Dry Lake, Calif.

In 1969, astronauts Eugene A. Cernan, Thomas P. Stafford and John W. Young blasted off aboard Apollo 10 on a mission to orbit the moon.

In 1980, the Mount St. Helens volcano in Washington state exploded, leaving 57 people dead or missing.

Ten years ago: Georgette Smith, a 42-year-old Florida woman left paralyzed from the neck down after being shot by her elderly mother, won the right to be taken off life support. (Smith died the next day, shortly after being removed from a ventilator; her mother, Shirley Egan, was later acquitted of attempted murder.) Two Serb soldiers held as prisoners of war by the U.S. military were turned over to Yugoslav authorities.

Five years ago: Former New York City fire commissioner Thomas Von Essen and former police chief Bernard Kerik came under harsh criticism for what some members of the Sept. 11 commission said was an initial lack of cooperation between their departments on 9/11. Stunning her supporters, Sonia Gandhi announced she would “humbly decline” to be the next prime minister of India. Randy Johnson, at age 40, became the oldest pitcher in major league history to throw a perfect game; the lefty retired all 27 batters to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks over the Atlanta Braves 2-0.

One year ago: President George W. Bush lectured the Arab world about everything from political repression to the denial of women’s rights in a speech at the Egyptian resort of Sharm El-Sheik. Kenny Chesney was named entertainer of the year by the Academy of Country Music for the fourth straight time. Russia won its first title at the world hockey championships since 1993 with a 5-4 win over Canada.

Today’s Birthdays: Actor Bill Macy is 87. Hall-of-Fame sportscaster Jack Whitaker is 85. Actor Pernell Roberts is 81. Actor Robert Morse is 78. Actor and television executive Dwayne Hickman is 75. Baseball Hall of Famer Brooks Robinson is 72. Bluegrass singer-musician Rodney Dillard (The Dillards) is 67. Baseball Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson is 63. Actress Candice Azzara is 62. Country singer Joe Bonsall (The Oak Ridge Boys) is 61. Rock musician Rick Wakeman (Yes) is 60. Actor James Stephens is 58. Country singer George Strait is 57. R&B singer Butch Tavares (Tavares) is 56. Actor Chow Yun-Fat is 54. Rock singer-musician Page Hamilton is 49. Contemporary Christian musician Barry Graul (MercyMe) is 48. Singer-actress Martika is 40. Comedian-writer Tina Fey is 39. Rapper Special Ed is 35. Dallas Cowboys offensive tackle Flozell Adams is 34. Rock singer Jack Johnson is 34. R&B singer Darryl Allen (Mista) is 29. Actor Matt Long is 29. Christian-rock musician Kevin Huguley (Rush of Fools) is 27. Actor Spencer Breslin is 17.

Thought for Today: “Don’t hurry, don’t worry. You’re only here for a short visit. So be sure to stop and smell the flowers.” — Walter C. Hagen, American golfer (1892-1969).

I’m just done watching this 2007 movie by the hand of Ji-hun Kim called May 18. It’s fuc

I’m just done watching this 2007 movie by the hand of Ji-hun Kim called May 18. It’s fucked up. Crazy. Insane. Weird and most of all: about 30 years ago, it really happened.

The Gwangju Democratization Movement refers to a popular uprising in the city of Gwangju, South Korea from May 18 to May 27, 1980. During this period, citizens rose up against Chun Doo-hwan’s military dictatorship and took control of the city. In the course of the uprising, citizens took up arms to defend themselves, but were ultimately crushed by the South Korean army. The event is sometimes called, simply, 5.18, or 518.

During Chun Doo-hwan’s reign, the incident was represented as a rebellion inspired by Communist sympathizers. But after civil rule was reinstated, the incident received recognition as an effort to defend democracy from military usurpation. In 1997, former presidents Chun Doo-hwan, Roh Tae-woo, and 17 others were convicted – and subsequently pardoned – for their “connections with the December 12, 1979 coup, the Gwangju Uprising, and slush funds”. By 2002, a national cemetery and day of commemoration, along with acts to “compensate, and restore honor” to victims, were established.

The movie itself starts of easily. A young guy named Kang Min-Woo (Kim Sang-kyung) and his younger brother Jin-Woo (Lee Jun-ki) seem to be having the time of their lives. The youngest of them both studies at a law school while the older one rides a cab. Along the first half hour of the movie, Jin-Woo tries to help his brother into getting closer to one of the girls around: a nurse called Shin-ae and and as a result of his efforts they go to the cinema all together.

But not long after the film begins, they hear the sound of sirens and are rushed out of the theater. Outside they find chaos in the streets : Tear gas gets used and soldiers who are supposed to control the student upcomings are giving violent beatings to whoever they encounter. Bewildered and enraged, the citizens form a militia, determined to protect the ones they love. But in the end, Min-Woo finds himself in the middle of it all.

After all this time of surfing through the net and watching Asian movies, I came to the conclusion I actually wanted to know why everyone thought this young guy by the name of Lee Jun-Ki was so special. May 18 was the first movie that came to mind and I decided – after seeing some other known names in the cast – this to be the one I’d see. I have to admit that I have never cried at a movie but I was very close with this one. I’ve seen the movie in two parts (both about an hour). The first part was about Jin-Woo trying to take revenge for the death of one of his friends while the second part was all about Min-Woo. And in the first part there was this short scene in which the army men just start shooting the unaware civilians and lots of them get killed. A little kid of about 6 years old stands in the middle of it all, screaming for his dad. When his dad finally arives and grabs the boy to run away, he gets shot and the kid starts freaking out. I think I’ve never seen any scene before, that was as intense as that one.

In the end the movie was a pretty good one. It gave me a short lesson in one of South Korea’s most devastating happenings and showed me some more about the potential some actors hold. Lee Jun-Ki (Il Ji-Mae: The Phantom Thief) and Kim Sang-Kyung (Memories of Murder) are definitely worth watching and looking out for. I can’t wait to see anything by them again. Although I have to admit I fully believe that Lee Jun-Ki’s fame isn’t only there because of his acting. his pretty face must have had something to do with it as well.

There are certain things you might expect when meeting a star actor: crazy good looks, fabulous life

There are certain things you might expect when meeting a star actor: crazy good looks, fabulous lifestyle and, perhaps, a bit of attitude.

Such was this reporter’s expectation before an exclusive interview with Korean actor Lee Joon-ki on a recent afternoon. Lee, once a young and struggling actor from the port city of Busan, was catapulted to stardom with his impressive portrayal of an androgynous clown in the 2005 hit film “The King and the Clown.”

Today, Lee is ranked as one of Korea’s biggest box office draws. The few films he has made have attracted almost 20 million people, according to the latest figures.

This puts the 27-year-old actor on par with some of Korea’s most successful veterans, like Song Kang-ho, Sol Kyung-gu and Ahn Sung-ki.

Yes. The looks were there, although many would agree that Lee’s androgynous features aren’t what you would call typical, bordering somewhere between male and female.

The lifestyle was there, as well, with his entourage serving him one iced Americano after another and attending to his appearance from time to time to make sure that he felt and looked his best.

But it’s pretty difficult to say whether his attitude is typical of his peers.

“I’ve had my fall from grace,” Lee said with a serious face and a low voice as he sat dressed for a photo shoot in an impeccable black suit, white shirt and black tie.

“After my performance in The King and the Clown, I found myself at the forefront of this ‘pretty boy’ trend, whether or not that was my intention. Suddenly, people were interested in me, and there was all this praise and criticism all at the same time. Everything was just so overwhelming. I felt like I was floating on air.”

The “pretty boy” look for men has become more popular in recent years and since then Korean pop culture and the industries that support it have never been the same. Men as pretty as (or prettier than) women have become popular icons, and men who take care of their looks are much in demand.

Although the trend is still going strong, it hasn’t guaranteed Lee success. His subsequent films – “Fly, Daddy, Fly” (2006), “May 18″ (2007), and “Virgin Snow” (2007) – have either fallen short of expectations at the box office or cast Lee in minor roles, to say the least. He has, however, managed to stay in the spotlight with TV dramas like “My Girl” (2005) and “The Time between Dog and Wolf” (2007).

Looking back, Lee described his early days as a rising celebrity as having been marked by loneliness and failure.

“I think I became a bit full of myself with The King and the Clown. Then came the slump and the big fear of ‘what will I do when I stop shining?’” he said calmly. “But I certainly didn’t want to go back, considering all the effort it had taken me to get there. So in a way I had no choice but to gather myself together and push myself to get out of the darkness.”

Many would agree that Lee did have some success in getting out of his slump. His performance in the SBS drama “Iljimae” last year brought him top honors in the 2008 SBS Drama Awards last December.

The epic drama in which Lee plays a heroic thief who steals from corrupt Joseon Dynasty government officials and gives his take to the poor, enjoyed ratings of over 30 percent, and its DVDs sales were twice those of “Jumong,” another award-winning epic drama that was hugely successful here. Iljimae went on to air in Japan, and started its run on Monday on TV Tokyo.

The Japan deal is hardly surprising. Despite his relatively short career, Lee enjoys a fair amount of recognition in China, Japan and other Asian countries. A recent survey ranked Lee fourth as the hallyu (Korean wave) actor with the biggest potential.

Hallyu refers to the increase in interest in Korean pop culture in other Asian countries.

Lee was the representative for the Seoul Hallyu Festival last year.

In response to calls from his Chinese and Japanese fans, Lee held fan appreciation concerts in Shanghai and Hangzhou in China, with attendance up around 10,000. He also plans to present similar concerts in Kobe and Yokohama in Japan.

“Being a public figure, there aren’t many ways for me to relieve stress. And over the years, I’ve lost some of the people in my life. In that sense, I just want to have fun with my fans. My fans mean a lot to me.”

What was evident in the hour I spent with Lee were his seriousness and intensity, quite unusual for such a young celebrity. He also seems to possess the kind of insatiable ambition and endless tenacity people often attribute to “Gyeongsangdo guys,” guys from the Gyeongsang provinces in the southern part of the peninsula, like Lee.

Growing up, Lee’s family wasn’t rich. Lee says that is what made him who he is today.

“I just hated losing,” Lee said, sipping his iced Americano. “I had to constantly fight for things in life. Nothing could be taken for granted. Thinking back, had I grown up in a wealthy family, I think I would’ve taken things more slowly, and approached things in a more relaxed way. Perhaps I would’ve focused more on my studies, too,” Lee giggled, as if he had long ago made peace with his humble background.

Throughout the interview, Lee listened attentively to my questions, digesting them to the fullest, and responded in an extremely firm and thoughtful manner.

The thing he said with perhaps the most conviction came during a conversation about his relationship to his King and Clown character.

“Clowns [in the Joseon era] came from the lower classes, but had such longing for artistic creativity and freedom. Through their performances they could explore such desires, while at the same time bringing people joy,” Lee explained. The King and the Clown ends with Lee’s character Gongil yelling that he will become a clown in his next life. For Lee, the answer would perhaps be the same.

I call it unforgettable because I met the person whom I yearned to meet right from the day I read hi

I call it unforgettable because I met the person whom I yearned to meet right from the day I read his book – Kane & Abel, incidentally my first book written by him and his best book so far. Now, no prize to you if you have rightly guesses whom I was talking about . Yes, Jeffrey Archer had come to Bangalore to promote his new book ‘Paths of Glory’ and the event took place at Landmark in Garuda Swagat Mall, Jayanagar. I was so thrilled the whole day and not able to concentrate on anything just waiting for my watch to show 6 pm so that I can start for the event. But alas, I managed to reach the place only by 7.15, courtesy bangalore traffic and the surprise rainfall. After reachng the mall and when I was just about to enter, a benz car zoomed in and halted to a break, and within moments the great man came out and was greeting the few of us standing there with a ‘good evening’. Well, my tongue was glued to the palate and it was diificult to speak. I became part of the convoy waiting to welcome him and together with them, I bypassed the waiting crowd to stand close to the dias. May be not ethical but perfectly understandable; I can see you nodding. Thanks.

One thing, in fact two things, I could not help notice was his perfect timing sense and the sense of humour. He spoke for almost an hour studded with wisdom, experience and his trademark sarcasm we can see in his books. When he explained the gimmicks used by his U.S. publishers to get him on the bestsellers’ list, we were all rolling over the floor filled with laughter. After the speech, got Kane&Abel and As the Crow Flies- two of my most favourite books- autographed by him but even now, my tongue was less co-operative when I tried to speak, finally mumbling out ‘Have a good time in India’ with the second-half hardly audible to myself.

It was totally a memorable and unforgettable day and I am still on cloud nine. May be a new projector moule would bring me back to reality.

Activity in Kerchner et al v Obama & Congress et al Lawsuit – On 18 May 2000 I filed a Declaration Opposing Defendants’ Motion to Extend Time to Answer or Otherwise Move as to the Amended Complaint Returnable June 1, 2009. The defendants have already had almost three months to answer, move, or otherwise respond. Regular citizen defendants get 20 days. The government normally gets 60 days. They have already had almost 90 days. What they are asking for would get them to over 120 days before having to answer or otherwise move. In our opinion, they have had an adequate amount of time to answer or move or other wise respond. Thus I have filed our opposition to any further extensions of time to answer or otherwise move on this case. More on that in a subsequent post.

I really don’t like doing these kinds, of posts. But I will anyway. Rest in peace to Yung Doll

I really don’t like doing these kinds, of posts. But I will anyway. Rest in peace to Yung Dolla. Born November 25, 1987 – Died May 18, 2009

Now I can’t say he was my favorite artist, but I did mess with some of his tracks like. Who the f*ck is that, Feelin’ Myself etc… Dolla, was signed to Akon’s Konvict music & modeled for Sean John. In his young 21 year old life, he still had alot of livin’ too do. And it’s sad that such a young talent was cut before his time. Dolla was fatally shot near the La Cienega Boulevard entrance of the Beverly Center in Los Angeles. Dolla’s album A “Dance Off & A Fist” was ment to be released this year, but will be held off do too his death.

Life is crazy guys, everyday can really be your last. You never know if you’ll make it too that party, or too that birthday, or too your bed. Even moment is a givin’ something worth living for ever cause once your gone. Your gone, you can’t come back. So think before you act, remeber. “When you hit a man, in the face. You can always come back and aplogize. But when you kill a man, you can never make right, by that man. You will never be able, to aplogize or make amense for what you’ve done cause he’s gone.” And this is some shit, we really gotta think about. We really gotta listen to, some shit we really need to believe, think, and worry about. Life is what you make it, so live it right. Shit I sound like a peacher. But it’s times like this when people need to hear it. And this shit really needs to stop.

If I weren’t kinda scared of blond-haired Vikings from Scandinavia, I would claim Korpiklaani’s Finnish folk-metal / drinking music to be the funniest subgenre of all time.
May 18, 1952: Professor Willard Frank Libby states that Stonehenge dates from 1848 BC. Professor Lib

May 18, 1952: Professor Willard Frank Libby states that Stonehenge dates from 1848 BC. Professor Libby and his colleagues at the University of Chicago developed a method of dating material based on carbon-14, a naturally occurring isotope, three years earlier, what we call carbon dating. The theory was that carbon-14 deteriorates at a precise and measurable rate. Libby won a Nobel Prize in chemistry for his method in 1960.

Libby was born in 1908 in Grand Valley, Colorado. He received his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley in 1933. He went on to become a lecturer and eventually an assistant professor at his alma mater. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1941 and spent most of the year at Princeton. He worked on the Manhattan Project after the start of World War II. After the war, he became a professor at the University of Chicago and was appointed to the US Atomic Energy Commission in 1954. He moved to the University of California, Los Angeles in 1959 where he stayed until his retirement in 1976.

Carbon dating measures the breakdown of carbon-14 after the death of organic compounds, such as timbers used to build pyramids or Stonehenge. It was first thought that dating would be accurate up to 50,000 years but has since been increased to 70,000 years. By dating the timbers in the pyramids, whose construction dates were known, Libby was assured of the accuracy of his measurements.

Because nuclear bombs have been exploded, both in war and in testing, radiocarbon movement through the environment has increased and much has been learned about how it is transported naturally. The Dead Sea Scrolls have been accurately dated to the time in which they were supposed to have been written. The Iceman, discovered in Italy in 1991, has been dated to show that he was from 3300-3100 BC. The Shroud of Turin, the supposed burial cloth of Jesus was shown to date from 1260-1390 AD by three separate testing facilities – corresponding to the time when it first appeared in historical records rather than with the Biblical date of Jesus’ death.

“To look backward for a while is to refresh the eye, to restore it, and to render it more fit for its prime function of looking forward.” – Margaret Fairless Barber

“God has no power over the past except to cover it with oblivion.” – Pliny the Elder

“Praises for our past triumphs are as feathers to a dead bird.” – Paul Eldridge

Today is May 18. Twenty-nine years ago in the city of Gwangju, South Korea, students gathered outside the gates of Chonnam National University to protest the closing of the school. As the protest grew, South Korean soldiers arrived on the scene. What followed is a truly tragic and critical period in Korean history, one that has since come to be known as the Gwangju Democratization Movement.

The exact number of casualties who died between May 18 to May 27, 1980, is still under dispute. Most recently, it’s been reported that the incident resulted in 207 deaths, 2,392 wounded, and 987 missing. In 1997, former presidents Chun Doo Hwan and Roh Tae Woo, along with 17 other people, were convicted for their connections to the uprising. They were subsequently pardoned. They remain unpunished today.

Gwangju is my birthplace, and the city where I spent the first five years of my life. Many family members still live there. Many older family members witnessed and experienced firsthand the Gwangju Uprising. My mother remembers walking home from school with a group of classmates, huddled together in fear. My uncle was hidden inside the house and forbidden from going outside while the uprising went on. My grandmother was terrified that he would be killed – soldiers were, after all, targeting young men the most. My grandfather went out on his bicycle to one of the protests, and witnessed atrocities that he refuses to speak about to this day.

Thus, I cannot forget May 18. It is part of my history, and of my family’s history. That kind of horror cannot be erased within a matter of a few years. It goes deeper than that. And it infuriates me to think that Chun Doo Hwan still remains unpunished for his crimes. It deeply frustrates me to see Chungmuro spew out movies like May 18, which, if anything, disrespected the uprising with its clumsy histrionics and melodramatic shenanigans. Not enough has been done to remember and respect this event.

So please, for just this one day. Even if you have no personal connections with it, even if you’re not Korean. Please. Remember May 18.

Goodness Gracious, yes.
Its Bob Trusty Back again,
To show you love, Yay!

Its Haiku Monday!

Sadly, my internet went down this weekend on friday due to REALLY high winds! As mum would say, god had a sneezing fit and blew the trees down onto the power cables! LOSTL! Shes so great, my mum!

Well, im still waiting on those photos from the watch company. They said that they had to pull the advertisement because it wasnt targeted right or something. The man i spoke to said that he was packing up his things and that the company lost millions of dollars! Those poor people! I still got paid my handsome reward sum of $30 so i was well financed!

Tony and Rico said they wanted to talk to me after class and asked me what i saw a week or so ago. i said that i didnt know but everybody was hugging and i thought it was nice that everyone is getting along! They were happy with that and i still dont understand what is happening, but Sarah has started talking to me again, and I-Zax keeps pinching my bottom every class and gives me extra long hugs.

Everytime he hugs me though, i feel tingly and it feels like he has a stick of kabana or sausage in his pocket. He must get hungry during the day and snacks on it.

If my new green suit had pockets like that, i would carry sausage in them too!

His sausage might be old though as it was sorta hard and pressing against my leg.

Oh wells! Everyone is getting along and i have great new friends! LOSTL!

I really wish those photos would get to my internets box. Ill have to tell Timmy to keep an eye out for them and put them on the internets for me to watch.

Rich and compelling viewing, i assure you!

Well, Timmy says i should share more of my more embarassing situations and stories with you as we have quite the fan following! So More stories for sure!

One of the most disgusting times in my life was when i first rode on the bus. I was so scared and i remember it like it was yesterday, but really it was 2 years ago!

Mum needed to go shopping and i didnt hear what she had said, so she left without me. I really needed to go to the shop to buy a block of Cheese (Brie!) as i wanted to host a party with my then girlfriend Samantha. Those were the heady days of fun and frivolities!

I had a little bit of money on me as i did a toothpaste commercial for people with braces. I decided to take the bus. On my own!

I went to the nearest stop and waited for the next bus. And waited. And waited. I wasnt aware that the bus didnt stop there anymore until a little old lady told me that i should catch the bus from the new stop around the corner! LOSTL! I COULD HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR DECADES!

I caught the next bus just as i came around the corner and hopped on. The driver told me to sit down as i was in his way so i smiled and said “HAVE A LOVELY DAY!”. I think he spat at me after that and told me to “SIT THE F— DOWN!”. He must have ate a fly as i know i would have been in a bad mood if i did that.

There was only one seat left, next to a man with lots of metal piercings in his face and black spikey hair. His head was against the window and he looked a little like he was day dreaming. I day dream a lot too when im on long rides!

No one wanted to sit next to him as he smelled a little like poop and cherries, but the smell didnt bother me, so i sat down next to him!

His left arm looked a little bruised and slightly purple. Looks like he was just giving blood as he had a lot of needle marks on his veins and he kept on scratching around them making them squirt out little bits of yellowy stuff. I think mum says thats called Puss. Ew.

“Hello, my name is Bob and im riding the bus today! Whats your name?”.
“My name is Zebo of Xanthiaz. YOU’RE COVERED IN COCKROACHES!”

I didnt understand what Zebo was saying but i think he might have sniffed one of those permenant markers. They always make me feel dizzy and strange when i sniff them.

“No silly, Im cockroach free since 2003! Mum told me that she smoked them out with roach poison!”

“I met Jesus Christ and he touched me. He told me that i would be the next messiah!”

“Wow! Jesus Christ! LOSTL! Your mum must be so proud of you! I know mine would. She says that anytime i think dirty thoughts of naked women, that i should think of naked jesus instead and the thoughts will go away, and i will be filled with his glory!”

Zebo looked at me with a strange look and said “This is my stop” then ran off the bus as soon as it stopped. I think he was scared of me! LOSTL! Its my ferocious guns! LOSTL!

I made it safely to the shops AND there was mum! She yelled at me for not waiting at home, but its ok. I told her about my new friend Zebo and how hes the new messiah and that i told him about what she says about Jesus. I think she didnt understand a word i was saying but took me home AND paid for my Brie! What a glorious afternoon that was!

I sure hope i see Zebo again one day as we can trade stories of the dalai lama and his new messiah-ness! LOSTL!

“I find that because of modern technological evolution and our global
economy, and as a result of the great increase in population, our world has greatly changed: it has become much smaller. However, our perceptions have not evolved at the same pace; we continue to cling to old national demarcations and the old feelings of ‘us’ and ‘them’. “War seems to be part of the history of humanity. As we look at the situation of our planet in the past, countries, regions and even villages were economically independent of one another. Under those circumstances, the destruction of our enemy might have been a victory for us. There was a a relevance to violence and war. However, today we are so interdependent that the concept of war has become out dated. When we face problems or disagreements today, we have to arrive at solutions through dialogue. Dialogue is the only appropriate method. One-sided victory is no longer relevant. We must work to resolve conflicts in a spirit of reconciliation and always keep in mind the interests of others. We cannot destroy our neighbors! We cannot ignore their interests! Doing so would ultimately cause us to suffer. I therefore think that the concept of violence is now unsuitable. Nonviolence is the appropriate method.”

Have a great week everyone!
