Derek Quinlan sells controlling stake in Maybourne Hotel Group (thisismoney)

The Barclay brothers, owners of The Ritz hotel and Telegraph Media Group, have won control of Maybourne Hotel Group.

They agreed to buy 35% of the group from Irish real-estate baron Derek Quinlan, increasing their stake to 60%.

The deal will be a blow for Harrods owner Qatar Holdings and the Chinese government who both tabled £1bn bids for the group, which includes The Berkeley, Claridge’s and The Connaught in London.

The Chinese were also in talks with Paddy McKillen, one of Ireland’s most successful property developers, who holds 37%.

Sir David and Sir Frederick Barclay, the owners of the Telegraph newspaper group, have bought debt held by Bank of Scotland in the Maybourne Hotel Group in the latest move to take full control of its prestigious London hotels.

The Barclay brothers have bought a stake in the hotel group’s debt to support their bid to control its equity.
