Barack Obama: Iran faces fresh nuclear sanctions within weeks

Barack Obama has signalled a further escalation in the crisis over Iran’s nuclear ambitions by serving notice that punitive measures could be agreed “within weeks”.

Obama used a speech in South Korea’s capital, Seoul, to warn that the lesson of dealing with neighbouring North Korea was that Tehran must meet a deadline for complying with international demands and would face unspecified “consequences” if it did not.

The president’s remarks came a day after Iran appeared to definitively reject a proposal put forward in Vienna last month for sending enriched uranium to Russia and France for further processing, leaving negotiations at an apparent dead end.

“Iran has taken weeks now and has not shown its willingness to say yes to this proposal … and so as a consequence we have begun discussions with our international partners about the importance of having consequences,” Obama said at a news conference with the South Korea’s president, Lee Myung-bak. “Over the next several weeks, we will be developing a package of potential steps that we could take, that would indicate our seriousness to Iran.” Obama added that he hoped Iran would change its mind. The two leaders also pressed North Korea to return to dormant nuclear talks.

Iran’s foreign minster, Manouchehr Mottaki, speaking in Manila, dismissed talk of further sanctions. “Sanction was the literature of the 60s and 70s,” he said. “I think they are wise enough not to repeat failed experiences.”

On Wednesday Mottaki had appeared to reject the so-called Tehran nuclear research reactor (TRR) package but said Iran was ready for further talks.

The next diplomatic steps will be discussed tomorrow at a meeting in Brussels of the E3+3 – Britain, France and Germany, along with the US, UN and Russia – though diplomats said no decisions were expected. Britain is represented by Geoffrey Adams, a former British ambassador to Iran.

The Foreign Office said it was “very disappointed” by Iran’s failure to respond positively to the proposal by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that Iran should send 75% of its low-enriched uranium to Russia and France, where it would be turned into fuel for medical research. “Iran must act now to restore confidence in its overall programme,” a statement said.

Gala Riani, an analyst at thinktank IHS Global Insight, said: “The deal has been viewed as an important exercise in confidence building, given in particular that it is the product of the first direct negotiations including Iran and the United States for some time.”

Iran says it wants nuclear energy solely for peaceful purposes but its history of secrecy and restricting UN inspections have raised suspicions of a quest for nuclear weapons. Israel, which wants to preserve its nuclear monopoly in the Middle East, has threatened to attack Iran’s nuclear sites if diplomacy fails.

Earlier this week the IAEA expressed fears that Iran may have other secret nuclear sites following the discovery of a hidden facility near the holy city of Qom.

British officials had privately doubted Iran would accept the TRR proposal, not least because of divisions in Tehran in the wake of last June’s disputed presidential elections. Diplomats reported initially surprising signs that Iranian negotiators were considering a deal but these vanished once they returned home. Sanctions are unlikely to directly target Iran’s energy sector due to opposition from Russia and China. But sanctions would likely target Iranian banks and companies, affecting project financing, the development of the hydrocarbon sector and limit foreign investment — bad news for an already weak economy.

The US secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, meanwhile condemned death sentences imposed by Iran over unrest after the elections. “It is a very unfortunate, distressing development to see these sentences handed down … imposing the death penalty on people who participated in expressing their opposition to the government,” Clinton said.

These are questions that perhaps no one can answer correctly,

without seeing the written answer or being told.

This neat accelerometer controlled marble maze adds a level of fun to retrieving a gum ball. You have to first navigate the maze using a controller that has a dual axis accelerometer in it to control the angle of the platform. Though that does look like a wii accessory, there is no wiimote in there.  Only after you have completed it will the gum ball machine dispense the candy. [Dan] constructed everything himself, which might explain the lack of “pits” for the marble to fall into in the maze.

Irish Enough For Spring

Spring To Life

The Witch’s New Cat

The witch’s new cat got into the wands, while the witch was gone away.
Atop a shelf in the witch’s kitchen, the wands for years had laid.
Returning to find the wands in bits the witch was quite dismayed.
But the crumbs on the floor were small compared,
to the marvel the cat had made.

Magically, to the feline’s fortune, now the wand was in the cat.
Happy to be a vessel for spells, what tricks were dabbled at.
The earth moved, the skies shook, mountain tops fell flat.

The dust settled on a better world and the cat was pleased at that.

With one flick of its tail a fleet of shrimp trawlers washed up from the sea.
A herd of heifers, landed down from the Alps with a lifetime of milk for free.
Peacocks of India soon appeared, then trampolines under every tree.
By the time the witch got home, the cat had the most enchanting jubilee.

Now the witch thought, this all was alright, nothing has truly gone awry.
There was no keeping the wands any safer, for a cat no shelf is too high.
As soon as enough shrimp is devoured and the milk is lapped, oh my,
The cat will have the wand out of its system,
after a little more time goes by.

Each epiphany a kiss on the head from an angel;

As a kid I cawed at Crows. Cawing at Crows is what I do. Luckily, I live on 4 1/2 acres.
Our conversations are private.
When Crows attack a predator it is called mobbing. A flock of Crows used to be called a murder. A flock of Ravens used to be called an unkindness. Ravens are the largest Corvid, growing to 27″ and weighing up to 3 1/2 pounds. The Raven is the smartest bird of all birds with intelligence equal to a dog’s. The Crow and Raven do not mix at all. Crows will mob Ravens. There are 120 Corvids worldwide.

Being lost in a hedge maze is the antidote. It is nirvana. Like innocence.

Up until now, the 200 Nintendo Point price range has been the dumping ground for DSiWare — being able to download new games for just two dollars sounded promising, but the selection of titles available at that price has been just awful. Useless clock and calculator apps, generic sudoku packs and cut-up pieces of old first-party cartridge games have been the only things available there — nothing to get excited about, at all.

Robot Rescue, though, is a little more like it. This is, finally, a full and compelling game design offered for just two bucks — and you get a lot for your money. It’s a tile-based puzzle game where, in the tradition of past classics like Adventures of Lolo, you have to guide a happy-go-lucky hero out of a set of perplexing mazes. Unlike Lolo, though, the robot needing rescue here isn’t alone.

You control multiple machines simultaneously in Robot Rescue. Two, three, four or even as many as thirty different robots are under your command all at once, in each of the 45 different labyrinthine levels contained herein. You turn your DSi up on its side, to set up a “book style” view of each two-screen-wide stage. You assess the starting positions of your bots, planning your first move. Then you push a direction on the D-Pad — up, down, left or right. And all the robots move in the way you chose, at the same time.

Holding the DSi in sideways “book style” gives you double-wide mazes. (Don’t get tripped up by the divide in the middle, though.)

It’s a simple concept that makes for a very fun, brainteasing experience for fans of logic puzzlers — I admit that games like this are exactly my style, as coming up with a strategy of survival and then executing it flawlessly can be immensely satisfying. Robot Rescue is particularly rewarding in that way — because you can’t make any mistakes. One errant command or lapse of focus, and one or more of your bots is getting blown to bits.

That happens courtesy of the game’s many obstacles and hazards. There are land mines that explode your bots on contact. There are exposed electrical wires that can fry their circuits. There are red and yellow doors that can switch on and off — not dangerous by default, but if you accidentally press a switch while a bot’s still standing in a doorway, slam. Crushed. Dead.

So you have to make skillful use of what little open space and unharmful walls are provided to you, in order to maneuver each machine into a safe position relative to all the other robots and get them to the exit. For example, you may have two robots moving to the right together, one tile at a time — locked into the same synchronous rhythm. If you make one of them run into a wall, though, while the second still has open space in front of him, you can change their relative position — input another “right” command and the guy already hitting the wall won’t move, but his buddy will. You get the idea. Then throw conveyor belts, teleporters, glue spots on the floor and cloning devices into the mix and you’ve got quite an interesting puzzler indeed.

Robot Rescue has 45 different levels stretched across three difficulties — you start off with 15 Easy, move on to 15 Medium and finish with 15 Hard. Those challenge ratings are on target, too — the early going is very simple, as the first stages serve as tutorials to teach you the game. After that, though, you’re on your own — and it gets to be truly tough. You’ll have at least a couple of hours’ worth of puzzling out the solutions to all of the included levels here, and after that all 45 will be unlocked for free play. Which is nice, since several of the stages can be solved in different ways — you can go back and try alternate strategies. (There’s more than one way to rescue a robot.)

Closing Comments
All together, Robot Rescue is an impressive package for just two bucks — it’s compelling, it looks good and it’s highly rewarding when you figure out the solution to its particularly tough puzzles. It’s also a great value at that price, offering two to three hours’ worth of action for your 200 pennies. When you look again at the competition available at that same price level on DSiWare, it’s no contest — this is the first real, original game design to arrive at that price point. It finally feels like you’re getting an actual game for once, and not just a sparkle enhancement for your system’s camera, or some recycled chunk of an old WarioWare release.

So pick up Robot Rescue with my full recommendation, as I’d be shocked if anyone didn’t feel like they got their money’s worth here when it’s just two dollars. The game, too, was based on an original PC design from a few year’s back — and there was also a Robot Rescue 2 created then, as well. So jump on here, toss a couple bucks toward publisher Teyon, and convince them to bring over that sequel as well — because I want some more robots to rescue.

Robot Rescue, though, is a little more like it. This is, finally, a full and compelling game design offered for just two bucks — and you get a lot for your money. It’s a tile-based puzzle game where, in the tradition of past classics like Adventures of Lolo, you have to guide a happy-go-lucky hero out of a set of perplexing mazes. Unlike Lolo, though, the robot needing rescue here isn’t alone.

You control multiple machines simultaneously in Robot Rescue. Two, three, four or even as many as thirty different robots are under your command all at once, in each of the 45 different labyrinthine levels contained herein. You turn your DSi up on its side, to set up a “book style” view of each two-screen-wide stage. You assess the starting positions of your bots, planning your first move. Then you push a direction on the D-Pad — up, down, left or right. And all the robots move in the way you chose, at the same time.

Holding the DSi in sideways “book style” gives you double-wide mazes. (Don’t get tripped up by the divide in the middle, though.)

It’s a simple concept that makes for a very fun, brainteasing experience for fans of logic puzzlers — I admit that games like this are exactly my style, as coming up with a strategy of survival and then executing it flawlessly can be immensely satisfying. Robot Rescue is particularly rewarding in that way — because you can’t make any mistakes. One errant command or lapse of focus, and one or more of your bots is getting blown to bits.

That happens courtesy of the game’s many obstacles and hazards. There are land mines that explode your bots on contact. There are exposed electrical wires that can fry their circuits. There are red and yellow doors that can switch on and off — not dangerous by default, but if you accidentally press a switch while a bot’s still standing in a doorway, slam. Crushed. Dead.

So you have to make skillful use of what little open space and unharmful walls are provided to you, in order to maneuver each machine into a safe position relative to all the other robots and get them to the exit. For example, you may have two robots moving to the right together, one tile at a time — locked into the same synchronous rhythm. If you make one of them run into a wall, though, while the second still has open space in front of him, you can change their relative position — input another “right” command and the guy already hitting the wall won’t move, but his buddy will. You get the idea. Then throw conveyor belts, teleporters, glue spots on the floor and cloning devices into the mix and you’ve got quite an interesting puzzler indeed.

Robot Rescue has 45 different levels stretched across three difficulties — you start off with 15 Easy, move on to 15 Medium and finish with 15 Hard. Those challenge ratings are on target, too — the early going is very simple, as the first stages serve as tutorials to teach you the game. After that, though, you’re on your own — and it gets to be truly tough. You’ll have at least a couple of hours’ worth of puzzling out the solutions to all of the included levels here, and after that all 45 will be unlocked for free play. Which is nice, since several of the stages can be solved in different ways — you can go back and try alternate strategies. (There’s more than one way to rescue a robot.)

Closing Comments
All together, Robot Rescue is an impressive package for just two bucks — it’s compelling, it looks good and it’s highly rewarding when you figure out the solution to its particularly tough puzzles. It’s also a great value at that price, offering two to three hours’ worth of action for your 200 pennies. When you look again at the competition available at that same price level on DSiWare, it’s no contest — this is the first real, original game design to arrive at that price point. Up until now, the 200 Nintendo Point price range has been the dumping ground for DSiWare — being able to download new games for just two dollars sounded promising, but the selection of titles available at that price has been just awful. Useless clock and calculator apps, generic sudoku packs and cut-up pieces of old first-party cartridge games have been the only things available there — nothing to get excited about, at all.

Robot Rescue, though, is a little more like it. This is, finally, a full and compelling game design offered for just two bucks — and you get a lot for your money. It’s a tile-based puzzle game where, in the tradition of past classics like Adventures of Lolo, you have to guide a happy-go-lucky hero out of a set of perplexing mazes. Unlike Lolo, though, the robot needing rescue here isn’t alone.

You control multiple machines simultaneously in Robot Rescue. Two, three, four or even as many as thirty different robots are under your command all at once, in each of the 45 different labyrinthine levels contained herein. You turn your DSi up on its side, to set up a “book style” view of each two-screen-wide stage. You assess the starting positions of your bots, planning your first move. Then you push a direction on the D-Pad — up, down, left or right. And all the robots move in the way you chose, at the same time.

Holding the DSi in sideways “book style” gives you double-wide mazes. (Don’t get tripped up by the divide in the middle, though.)

It’s a simple concept that makes for a very fun, brainteasing experience for fans of logic puzzlers — I admit that games like this are exactly my style, as coming up with a strategy of survival and then executing it flawlessly can be immensely satisfying. Robot Rescue is particularly rewarding in that way — because you can’t make any mistakes. One errant command or lapse of focus, and one or more of your bots is getting blown to bits.

That happens courtesy of the game’s many obstacles and hazards. There are land mines that explode your bots on contact. There are exposed electrical wires that can fry their circuits. There are red and yellow doors that can switch on and off — not dangerous by default, but if you accidentally press a switch while a bot’s still standing in a doorway, slam. Crushed. Dead.

So you have to make skillful use of what little open space and unharmful walls are provided to you, in order to maneuver each machine into a safe position relative to all the other robots and get them to the exit. For example, you may have two robots moving to the right together, one tile at a time — locked into the same synchronous rhythm. If you make one of them run into a wall, though, while the second still has open space in front of him, you can change their relative position — input another “right” command and the guy already hitting the wall won’t move, but his buddy will. You get the idea. Then throw conveyor belts, teleporters, glue spots on the floor and cloning devices into the mix and you’ve got quite an interesting puzzler indeed.

Robot Rescue has 45 different levels stretched across three difficulties — you start off with 15 Easy, move on to 15 Medium and finish with 15 Hard. Those challenge ratings are on target, too — the early going is very simple, as the first stages serve as tutorials to teach you the game. After that, though, you’re on your own — and it gets to be truly tough. You’ll have at least a couple of hours’ worth of puzzling out the solutions to all of the included levels here, and after that all 45 will be unlocked for free play. Which is nice, since several of the stages can be solved in different ways — you can go back and try alternate strategies. (There’s more than one way to rescue a robot.)

Closing Comments
All together, Robot Rescue is an impressive package for just two bucks — it’s compelling, it looks good and it’s highly rewarding when you figure out the solution to its particularly tough puzzles. It’s also a great value at that price, offering two to three hours’ worth of action for your 200 pennies. When you look again at the competition available at that same price level on DSiWare, it’s no contest — this is the first real, original game design to arrive at that price point. It finally feels like you’re getting an actual game for once, and not just a sparkle enhancement for your system’s camera, or some recycled chunk of an old WarioWare release.

So pick up Robot Rescue with my full recommendation, as I’d be shocked if anyone didn’t feel like they got their money’s worth here when it’s just two dollars. The game, too, was based on an original PC design from a few year’s back — and there was also a Robot Rescue 2 created then, as well. So jump on here, toss a couple bucks toward publisher Teyon, and convince them to bring over that sequel as well — because I want some more robots to rescue.
