DJ Mbenga speelt meer dan ooit in de NBA.  Dankzij blessures van Paul Gasol en Andrew Bynum heeft onze landgenoot zelfs een basisplaats weten te bemachtigen bij de LA Lakers. Het seizoen is nog maar enkele weken ver, maar het draait goed voor Mbenga en zijn team. Een eerste round-up van het seizoen.

Voorlopig staan de Boston Celtics helemaal bovenaan het klassement. De kampioen van twee jaar geleden won op de openingsspeeldag van het Cleveland van LeBron James en heeft sindsdien nog maar een keer verloren. Topscorer daar is Paul Pierce met gemiddeld 18 punter per wedstrijd. Samen met ervaren mannen als Ray Allen en Kevin Garnett zijn zij zeker een van de sterkste teams op papier.

Op gelijke hoogte met Boston vinden we de Phoenix Suns, het enige team dat nogtoe won van Boston. Belangrijke pion is Steve Nash, de koning van de assist. Dit seizoen goed voor een gemiddelde van 12 assists per wedstrijd. Ook zij verloren slechts een wedstrijd, tegen de Orlando Magics van ‘Superman’ Dwight Howard.

Onder Boston en Phoenix vinden we twee teams terug. Na enkele moeilijke jaren lijkt Miami Heat opnieuw in vorm te zijn. Sterkhouder Dwayne Wade is goed voor bijna dertig punten per wedstrijd en ook zijn team verloor nog maar een keer, tegen Phoenix. U ziet het al, het zijn dezelfde teams die aan elkaar gewaagd zijn.

Double double

Op gelijke hoogte met Miama staan de LA Lakers. Ondanks de blessures van sterkhouders Paul Gasol en Andrew Bynum, hebben ze een goede start genomen. Dat heeft alles te maken met Kobe Bryant die er zo maar even gemiddeld 33 punten per wedstrijd maakt. Zijn maatje DJ Mbenga is ook voortreffelijk bezig. Hij mocht de laatste drie wedstrijden in de basis starten. Tegen New Orleand maakte hij een ‘double double’: tien punten en twaalf rebounds. Daarboven ook nog eens vier blocks.

Ook Bryant spreekt met lof over Mbenga. Eerder dit seizoen noemde hij Mbenga al Congo Cash. Bekijk de video van die avond hieronder.

Phil Jackson, coach van de Lakers, is nu absoluut recordhouder qua NBA-titels. Hij won er eerst zes met de Chicago Bulls en dit is zijn vierde met de Lakers. Niemand deed ooit beter. Voorlopig is het nog afwachten of zijn contract verlengt.

I hate dislike Kobe Bryant (and the Lakers).

As a pastor, you gotta kind of watch certain words you use. Hate is one of those words. So I’ll just say I dislike here:

5.  Knock-off
I personally believe that Kobe Bryant is a great basketball player.  Let me just get that out there (as I gag and throw up a little bit in my mouth).  However, I think he’s a cheap “knock off”.  Fellas, I think your ladies can help you out with this one.  They can spot knock off purses from a mile away.  Kobe Bryant is a knock-off Michael Jordan.  From the tongue wag to the turn around, he has managed to mirror Jordan’s game in an eerie, serial killer kind of way.  You don’t believe me, check  this out.   I like that title: The Assassination of Michael Jordan by the Coward Kobe Bryant.  Don’t get me wrong, Jordan is on my “list” too.  I don’t like him either.  Never have, never will.  I understand taking a few elements from another player’s game, but goodness.  This guy gets a kick out of being called “the next Michael Jordan.”  As much as I don’t like Jordan, there will NEVER be a next Michael Jordan.

4.  The Proverbial “I” in Team
You know what I get tired of.  I get tired of these commentators talking about how Kobe likes to get his teammates involved early, because he can get his at any time.  While this may be true, I have seen the freaked out, “I need to take over this game” Kobe Bryant (see the NBA Finals last year).  Nobody was exempt from his selfish rants.  Just ask Sasha Vujacic.  Poor little guy was treated like a child  in Boston last year.  Not sure why people continue to try to convince me that he is a team player.  He wasn’t that way when he played with Shaq and he isn’t that way now.  Speaking of Shaq….

3.  The Big Cactus
Kobe can probably have about seven rings right now.  He (i.e. his huge ego) forced Jerry Buss to run Shaq out of town.  The result-no more championships, while Shaq was in Miami winning a title with D. Wade.  Let me make this clear.  Andrew Bynum is not the answer.  He and Pau Gasol combined are no match for Shaq in his prime.  I was sorely afraid of that Lakers team.  They put it on my Spurs in the Western Conference Semis (although we did get them one year).  This team is good, but not Shaq-Kobe good.  The way Shaq was treated by the Lakers was dead wrong.

2.  Good Person
Kobe Bryant is just not a good person.  I hear you, I hear you.  You don’t have to be a good person to be a great basketball player.  I have a tendency to like or dislike a player based on his/her overall demeanor.  Something bothers me about his body language.  It comes off as narcissistic, selfish, and arrogant.  Maybe this is why I’m a Tim Duncan fan.  Sure he’s one of the most “boring” players in the game.  In fact, many people know little to nothing about his personal life (like the fact that he’s married).  No camera cuts to his wife sitting in the stands.  No meeting the wife and kids in the tunnel, with the ABC camera crew in tow to redeem his image.  Tim Duncan is just a consummate ball player.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad Kobe seems to have reconciled with his wife and is a family man, but something about the whole thing seems a bit dramatized.  Please don’t understand this as me being judgmental.  I’m just being real.  For me, he’s not a good guy.  There is one thing sealed this point for me and it’s found in my #1 reason I dislike Kobe (and the Lakers)

1.   HEY YOU GUYS!!!!!!
This one sealed for me.  So DJ Mbenga is one of the few guys on the Lakers I actually like.  In Kobe’s mind, he’s the butt of a very rude joke.  Can you believe that?  Did he just call Mbenga a Goonie?  Stories abound (many of which I have gotten firsthand from a friend who is in the league) about Kobe as a teammate.  I’ve had Lakers fans argue this point with me for hours, but I just don’t think he’s a good teammate.  It’s sad too.  I like four players on the Lakers.  Ariza is a great player.  Fisher is just an all around good guy.  Pau is underrated and one of the best PF’s in the game (he was doing the same thing Memphis, it’s just that nobody noticed).  Mbenga is a workhorse who knows his role.  So why do I dislike the Lakers?  Kobe Bryant.  I guess it’s a guilt by association thing with me.  The face of the franchise has defaced the franchise for me.  This is why I cheer for any team that plays for the Lakers.  Be it the Bobcats, Clippers, or Jazz, I watch in hopes that Kobe is humbled and realizes that basketball is about more than one player.

Call me a hater.  I just call myself a basketball fan who loves the game too much to let one ego ruin it for me.  So enjoy the Playoffs Lakers fans.  I look forward to the many texts, phone calls, and Facebook messages I’ll get as the Lakers cruise through the first couple of rounds in the playoffs.  But, there is no way they win a championship this year (or any year) unless Kobe stops thinking about Kobe and starts thinking about team.  Bring back the young kid with the fro who was just happy to be playing in the league.  At least that Kobe was one that I could stomach.

When DJ Mbenga’s agent said that if things went well, Mbenga would be signed by either the Lakers or the Heat, he initiated a bit of speculation about what exactly his comments meant. A workout for Miami could hardly suddenly create interest for Mbenga’s presence back in the purple and gold. At the same time, if Mbenga were happy with some offer from the Lakers, he would not be working out for the Heat. So it seems as if the most likely scenario is that Mbenga has a lowball offer on the table from the Lakers and is looking to draw either a more significant offer from Miami (or possibly the same pay rate and more playing time) or to urge the Lakers to increase their offer if they intend to keep him.

The Lakers are probably asking themselves what Mbenga is worth. Specifically, they are probably asking whether he is worth anything more than the Veteran Minimum salary. It is worthwhile to look at the Lakers’ current lineup, gauge Mbenga’s skills, and determine whether he is worth only the Vet Min or whether he is worth more.

The first thing that should be said about Mbenga is that he is a raw talent. Although he spent parts of five seasons playing in Belgium, he has logged just 121 games in his NBA career and has started just two of those. This supports the suggestion that he is inexperienced. A quick look at his game when on court is sufficient to see that his hesitancy offensively and poor shooting success at the free throw line cement the deal. The second thing that should be said is that his ceiling is not very high. Mbenga is nearly 27 years old and while he has shown some growth, especially in the past season with the Lakers, one thing Mbenga has not shown is anything remarkable. When gauging the top end of a player, one looks for the exceptional performances, rare as they may be, not the more regular ’solid’ performances. Think of the analogy with a stick of dynamite and a hammer. One big hit will detonate the dynamite; one hundred taps will not make a difference. A four-block game aside, Mbenga has not approached anything remarkable from a scoring, rebounding, or defensive point of view (see something on his defense below). Bearing these limitations in mind, it must be stressed that there is a pivotal role for a player like Mbenga in the NBA and specifically on a championship caliber team like the Lakers.

After noticing that Mbenga is raw, the observer will be drawn to the fact that his athleticism is undeniable. Mbenga moves quickly and fluidly on the court, has a lot of energy, good leaping skills, and has very quick feet. Meanwhile, offensively, it would be appropriate to say that Mbenga is limited. DJ takes a high percentage of jump shots and while his effective field goal percent is not bad for a Center, it is not all good news. His range is limited to perhaps ten feet from the basket so he fails to draw opposing Centers out of the lane and create paths to the hoop. If his 44 career free throw attempts are any indication of his shooting ability, Mbenga is a poor shooter (just under 57% in his career). Despite his athleticism, Mbenga is too tentative to attack the rim. He may also not have the handles. Despite all this, it would not be quite right to say that Mbenga is wholly incompetent offensively. Despite not playing many minutes and so not having the benefit of finding a rhythm, DJ averaged nearly one point per three minutes because his speed up and down the court allows him to get off attempts when defenders slack against him.

Defensively, Mbenga’s tools are impressive, but his execution is lacking. There is no doubting his effort and sometimes the results are impressive. He has, for instance, averaged one block per 11 or 12 minutes, which is impressive. But while the block numbers look good, they are almost all athleticism blocks. In other words they are the kind of block a defensive coach merely tolerates as opposed to celebrates. At seven feet tall, 255 pounds, and with little body fat, Mbenga has the build to be a brute on the defensive end. Yet he is nothing of the sort. Mbenga uses his speed and athleticism too much, refusing to body up regularly. The results are yielding too many rebounds, picking up too many fouls, and giving too much confidence to players who have no business attacking a player with Mbenga’s physical attributes.

What would be interesting for Mbenga would be to see him work against Andrew Bynum regularly. Bynum is one of the biggest players in the game and may be stronger than Mbenga. Mbenga could benefit from having a player like Bynum, who has an offensive game, attacking regularly. Mbenga must use his weight to slow the attack and make the attacker spend some energy. The same move when on offense, using his weight to back down defenders, would tire his opponent. With the speed he possesses, Mbenga could find himself getting more easy buckets as he faces a tired defender.

While this may all be academic, as no signing information has been mentioned, one has to be pleased with the prospect of returning a player with half a season of triangle experience, loads of energy, and athleticism. With just Chris Mihm as a true Center backing up Andrew Bynum, Mbenga would be a great investment. Bynum missed 47 games last season and Mihm has averaged just 11.5 games per season over the last two. So there is no question that a third Center would have a role on the team. With Phil Jackson, the triangle experience is often the make or break point for a player addition. His potential for becoming a solid defender and scoring in transition should make him a Laker next season. The question seems to be money, if the words of Mbenga’s agent ring true, but competing offers seem lacking. Look for Mbenga to wear purple and gold next season.

With that out of the way, lets take a look at this timeless classic from Bill Plaschke.

Big bristly brooms were everywhere in these NBA playoffs, giant kitchen cleaners such as Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett.

We’re off to a great start. Already we see words but must question whether they actually form a sentence. Also, how would KG feel if he knew he was being compared to a giant kitchen cleaner?

Tough guys were everywhere this NBA spring, hammers such as David West and Carlos Boozer

UGH, seriously dude? You dont even put a period at the end of this sequence of letters (whatever it is).

But Monday with the nice ‘n’ easy Lakers was the first time anybody has used the word crush.

Incorrect, I know for a fact there is a movie called Blue Crush. Seriously though, even if we take this at face value, that it’s the first time someone said the word “crush” in the NBA playoffs this year, is this an important point? Why is this guy making money for writing stuff? It’s just really stupid. Oh and by the way, the Celtics cruuuuuushed the Hawks in game 5.

Granted, they didn’t require much more than a pulse until the final hour of the final game.

What is the “final hour of the final game”? A game is 48 minutes. Is this the “final hour in the running timer that is Bill Plaschke’s mind” clock?

But nowhere in the NBA today does that pulse beat harder than underneath barely sweaty, slightly torn gold jerseys that brushed quickly through their first mountain.

Read that again, from “underneath” to the end. This guy just sucks (Now that’s insightful analysis!!). WHy the hell are we using the word mountain? I guess the Lakers may meet the Jazz next, who kinda had mountains on their jersey at some point, even though they are called the jazz, which is weird because theyre from utah, and utah doesn’t really do jazz well. Where were we? Oh yeah, run on sentences.

What the San Antonio Spurs couldn’t do, what the Boston Celtics didn’t come close to doing, the Lakers have done, sweeping their first-round series against the Denver Nuggets on Monday with a 107-101 victory in Game 4 at the Pepsi Center.

Thanks for getting us back on track Bill. now for some analysis.

We know the Lakers can beat a loosely coached, barely attentive flyweight. How will they do against a strictly controlled, consistently punching heavyweight?

My favorite Laker game to this day is back in the early nineties when they beat an out-of-retirement George Foreman in a straight up classic. Or maybe that was Evander Holyfield… nope Lakers, definitely Lakers. (I realize this doesn’t make sense because Foreman was more the “wait until you slip up throw one huge punch and end it” type of fighter, not the “strictly controlled, consistently punching” type, but none of this makes sense, so I think I’m ok.)

”We collected ourselves,” Kobe Bryant said.

That is one way of putting it.

Another way of putting it is, crash, bang, boom.

Onomatopoeia!! Of course this Onomatopoeia makes absolutely no sense, but hey at least it’s a cool word. Couldn’t he at least have said, “Kobe showed his cool resolve against the apathetic Nuggets when he dove for a loose ball. Crash, bang, boom.” Of course this makes no sense either, but mostly because Kobe would never dive for a ball.

[Walton] threw up a looping shot.

What other kinds of shots are there? Layups, dunks, Rick Barry’s mildly less loopy underhand freethrow, and Loopy jump shots. These are your options.

The Lakers can hardly use these four games as a predictor of their future playoff toughness.

But you know something?

It matters to them.

It matters to them. No way. This is just wrong. I know for a fact that Didier Ilunga-Mbenga only tries to score to earn those free tacos for the fans. But at least he’s doing it for the fans! Derek Fisher just wants the money for his family! Ronny Turiaf doesn’t care about winning, he just cares about not dying from a heart condition (too soon? Yeah definitely).

The children’s table cleared, it is now time for the Lakers to venture to the adult table probably found in Salt Lake City.

Séquence 1 « Mbenga le Lakers ».

Vraiment sympa, le Mbenga. Le seul membre de notre équipe nationale à évoluer en NBA. Il nous a accueilli comme ses potes et nous a ouvert les portes : celles d’un entraînement des Lakers, celles de sa vie là-bas, celles de la visite d’Eddy Casteels à L.A., celles de ses partenaires aussi (Gasol, Turiaf, …).

Séquence 2 « Entretien avec Tony Parker »

Tout s’est joué au départ d’un bon tuyau venu d’un responsable NBA. On savait à peu près ou les Spurs s’entraînaient avant d’affronter les Lakers. Un coin perdu dans Santa Monica, une salle de sport dans un collège. Arrivés sur place, un membre de la sécurité nous fait croire que les joueurs ne sont pas là. Je lui montre mon mail venu tout droit de la NBA. Et là, tout devient plus simple, on nous escorte jusqu’à la salle. Un frisson au moment d’entrer : les Spurs sont bien là, Duncan, Ginobili, Parker et nous sommes la seule équipe de télévision ! Reste à essayer d’accrocher le Français. Tony Parker est venu immédiatement, sympa, hyper sympa, pour nous parler de la Belgique, des ambitions de San Antonio, …

Un grand moment qui est le fruit d’un coup de bol

L’occasion de découvrir le Stapels Center en ébullition à l’extérieur et à l’intérieur. Un match de folie entre 2 candidats au titre. Puis aussi une incursion dans les vestiaires et une interview du grand Kobe Bryant (wow !).

It was over before it seemed like it had a chance be begin. Webber wasn’t the ideal acquisition considering his questionable health and bad history with the team, but somehow, Mullin and Nelson managed to accumulate more ‘pros’ than ‘cons’ to justify the move in lieu of making a trade by the NBA Trade Deadline. It was a minimal risk move financially, but with the move, the Warriors ended up wasting time, resources, and a roster spot for the duration of the experiment.

I wish we would have just stuck with Stephane Lasme instead of opting for Mbenga first, than Webber. Lasme is a freak shot blocker who rebounds well and plays with high energy – exactly what this team is short on. Unfortunately, the Miami Heat have snatched him up from the D-League and we are left to contemplate who, if anyone, is worthy to garner a roster spot on our run ‘n gun system.

I wouldn’t necessarily sign a guy that rebounds and blocks shots. I really believe we already have a guy that could fill that need better than anyone we could pick up in the D-League or Free Agency. His name is Patrick O’Bryant. I know he’s been in Nelson’s doghouse ever since he had that breakout game earlier in the year vs. the Clippers, but that guy has some skills and his length could definitely help us on the glass and with post defense.

Here are a few names of potential pick-ups that come to mind…..

1. Julius Hodge – my favorite pick; versatile guard that would fit well in Nelli-ball; he’s doing extremely well in the D-League and so far we’ve had lots of luck picking up talent from there; currently averaging: 24.0 ppg, 8.1 rpg, 6.6 apg, .9 spg, .4 bpg, .596 fg%, .750 ft%
2. Ruben Patterson – the ‘Kobe Stopper’ could bring additional toughness, defense, and rebounding if he has kept himself ready for a call-up
3. Elton Brown – one of the top bigs in the D-League; he can score, block some shots, and best of all rebound the ball
4. Brandon Wallace – super athletic shot blocker, but offense could hold him back quite a bit
5. Rob Benson – best rebounder in the D-League, but can he score enough for Nelson’s taste? Not sure.
6. Justin Williams – rebounding and shot blocking specialist who won’t be able to be on the playoff roster; recently released by the Rockets; could audition for next season

Hopefully, Mullin could find someone to fill that roster spot. I would love for O’Bryant to move back into the rotation for a few minutes every other night or when teams are scoring at will in the paint. Adding a player like Hodge will only make the team stronger, improve practices, and add depth in case of injuries.

Don’t sit on your hands, Mullin. We are so close to the playoffs. Once we are in we’ll need all the help we can get.

Quoi de neuf doc ? Bynum parle…

 

 

« Ca [genou] reste un peu douloureux mais j’ai hâte de revenir et jouer avec Gasol ». Parole de ‘Drew. Le pivot est content et attend avec impatience de partager sa raquette avec ancien un all star. Un mois après sa blessure au genou face à l’ancienne équipe de Pau, Andrew Bynum fait le point sur son état physique. « Ca ira, » lance-t-il, « tout se passera bien et je serai bientôt de retour. Pour le moment, il me faut juste être patient ». Patient. Le mot est lourd et l’attente longue pour le kid, auteur de sa meilleur saison statistique et fort contributeur de la réussite des Lakers. Patient. Un mot encore plus lourd dans la tête des fans, curieux et pressés de voir l’association ‘Drew, Pau et Lamar garder les paniers contres les offensives adverses. Pas de doutes, dans un peu moins d’un mois Los Angeles aura le back court défensif le plus longiligne, impressionnant et costaud du circuit. Un back court synonyme des nouveaux espoirs de titres. Cependant, ne pensez pas que l’arrivée de Pau Gasol soit un vrai soulagement. S’il en est un certain à court terme, surtout lors de ce road trip de 9 rencontres, il reste relatif sur le long terme. Bynum doit revenir en temps et en heure et compléter ce bel effectif pour être compétitif en Playoffs. Seule la rééducation du jeune pivot donnera la réponse. S’il peut maintenant se déplacer normalement, la course lui est encore impossible, « les muscles ne répondent pas à 100% » confie Bynum au L.A Times, « mais je suis impatient de revenir car je m’ennuie un peu loins des terrains ».

 

Sa vie est devenu une cure permanente pour paraphraser le quotidien US. Entre massages, glace et bains chauds, travail des appuies, espoirs et musculation partielle, le candidat au titre de MIP en début de saison passe le plus clair de son temps chez sa mère à jouer aux jeux vidéos. Ses seules consolations restent les sorties dans les bons restaurant d’Hollywood qu’il n’a pas le temps de visiter durant la saison.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Note

Bouc émissaire de l’été, Bynum a su changer l’attitude des fans à son égard en répondant aux critiques sur le terrain. Il y a tout juste un an de cela, le front office des Lakers (Jim Buss pour être exact) refusait de trader le prospect contre Jason Kidd, futur Hall of Famer, qui montre toujours d’excellentes dispositions malgré le poids des années. Cette aventure avait logiquement (dans le contexte de l’époque) enragé Kobe Bryant alors en pleine possession de ses moyens, mais plus que jamais en quête de soutien. Contrairement à Paul Pierce, l’appel du numéro 24 lancé envers la famille Buss, n’a pas eu de répercutions immédiates. 6 mois plus tard, la roue tourne enfin.

 

Mitch Kupchak annonce la signature de Didier MBenga pour le reste de la saison. Les contrats de 10 jours ne pouvant pas se cumuler plus de deux fois. L’ancien Mavs rejoint donc l’effectif qui passe de nouveau au maximum de 15 joueurs.

Nuggets 99 – Lakers 116

Après le time out KB rentre deux lancers, ses deux premiers points de la partie. Walton remplace Turiaf. Ronny, toujours très actif, continue de couper les passes lobées inside. Bryant quant à lui, décide ensuite d’équilibrer l’attaque et rentre ses deux premières tentatives (6 points). De cette façon les prises à deux vont persister et libérer les shooters sur le côté faible. Les appels de balle des co-capitaines créent des espaces immenses dont profitent Famar et Walton. Fisher et Kwame check in pour Turiaf et Sasha, alors que Melo retombe sur le pied d’un joueur (pas Lamar^^, enfin je crois pas…) et ne se relève pas. Après le temps mort on s’aperçoit que c’est le pied de Kobe qui fait tomber Antony. Melo (13 points) et Kobe (6 points à 100%) sortent. Javaris’s in. Crittenton prend le poste de finisseur sur le triangle et provoque bien la défense (3/4 FT sur deux fautes) tandis que Diawara (3 points) et Martin (12 points à 6/7 et 7rebond) tentent de réduire l’écart pour les hommes du Colorado. Carmelo est parti passer des Xrays au Staples Center, on attend de savoir s’il reviendra dans cette partie ou non.

Farmar, fort de son nouveau gimmick, remet un nouveau trois points à la sirène (9 points). Kwame rentre au vestiaire auteur de 6 points, 5 rebonds et 2 passes. 67-57 LAL, (Oh et pendant ce temps, Gomes met 35 pions et 11 rebonds sur la tête des Warriors et l’emporte, did I mention that ?).

Scoreboard à la mi-temps

Fisher, Kobe; Luke, Odom et Kwame pour ne pas changer. Aucun panier marqué des deux côtés durant les 2 premières minutes. C’est Iverson qui ouvre le score comme en début de rencontre. Bryant commence à être agressif et se dirige vers la ligne des lancers francs. On apprend que les Xrays de Melo sont négatifs mais qu’il ne reviendra pas pour le match. Fisher reboost son équipe et rentre un nouveau 3 points en exagèrant nettement sa trajectoire pour passer aux dessus des longs segments de Camby (19 points). Kobe prend alors sa 4ème faute (litigieuse) et quitte le terrain, remplacer par Sasha, qui à son tour rentre sa première tentative à 3 points. Brown lui, fait un super boulot aux rebonds (10 déjà). Mais en l’absence de Bryant Denver perd tout complexe, Kleiza prend feu (16 points, 6/9 dont 4/5 à trois points) et Iverson pousse bien le ballon. Temps mort LAL alors que les Nuggets sont plus qu’à 8 unités, 75-68.

Jackson tente alors un pari en remettant aussitôt KB24 dans la rencontre (6’30 remaining). Il rentre son premier shoot. Les Nuggets profitent de l’adresse extérieure de Camby (10 points à 5/10) et infligent un 14-3 à L.A pour pointer à 2 petites longueurs de leurs adversaires. Difficile à croire que Denver soit plus fort sans Melo. Même si les Lakers sont moins adroits, la zone mise en place par Karl et les rebonds vites sortis par Camby lancent les bleus en contre attaque. Les Nuggets prennent même 4 points d’avance. Mais Bryant reset l’attaque comme au 1er QT et fait tourner l’équipe merveilleusement. C’est Fisher qui bénéficie des beaux caviars dans les corners. Il inscrit 3 nouveaux trois points coup sur coup (28 points : 10/15 dont 6/7 from down town) !!! Famar suit le titulaire (6/10, 15 points). Pour conclure ce QT Bryant drive vers le panier, attire trois défenseurs et sert Turiaf sur un plateau grâce à une passe dans le dos magnifique, sa 11ème de la soirée. 91-82 LAL.

Kobe’s teaching

Fisher, Farmar, Kobe, Odom, Turiaf pour conclure.
Diawara défend sur Kobe et Fisher sur Iverson. Les deux hommes économisent ainsi leur énergie. Turiaf et Odom se montre agressif et obtiennent rapidement des lancers francs. Denver n’est pas à l’aise sur le jeu posé et multiplie les pertes de balles (5 consécutives). A son tour L.A pond un run de 14-3. Sans Bynum, Phil multiplie les rotations intérieures du triangle et facilite ainsi les passes pour les trailers. Le low tempo est bénéfique aux ors et pourpres qui creusent maintenant l’écart. Temps mort LAL, 98-84.

Kobe provoque une nouvelle fios la faute avant Vujacic à trois points (3 lancers francs obtenus). A l’autre bout du terrain A.I nous fait du 76ers en prenant le match à son compte. Dommage car Kleiza, Camby et Martin étaient chauds ce soir. Bryant décide de donner une petite leçon à son ancien coéquipier VonWafer qui défend maintenant sur lui. Un spin move enchaîné d’un fade away converti vaudra au néo Nuggets une petite tape sur les fesses. « He’s teaching » rigole Reggie Miller, commentateur TNT. Deux lancers francs plus tard c’est à 3 points que la sentence tombe (17 points 5/7). La rencontre n’a désormais plus trop d’intérêt, 20 points d’avance à 5 minutes de la fin. Denver semble fatigué, Allen brique même un shoot sans opposition des lancers francs.

DJ is in !!! Ovation pour MBenga please! 20 secondes après son entrée en jeu, il se jette au sol pour récupérer une balle fuyante. Coby Karl et Java’ check in. Karl devient le troisième joueur de l’histoire de la ligue à faire face à son père coachant l’équipe adverse. Il se permet même de faire la passe de transition du triangle entre ses jambes « à la fox » (Walton aussi le fait parfois), signe d’un système parfaitement assimilé. MBenga bloque ensuite Kleiza sur un lay up. Odom sort sous les applaudissements avec 15 points 11 rebonds et 7 passes. Crittenton achèvera la rencontre par un superbe lay up and1. « WE WANT TACOS, WE WANT TACOS !! ». MBenga contre un nouveau shoot et offre des Tacos au Staples Center pour son premier match. LAL 116, DN 99, (Oh et pendant ce temps, Lewis crucifie les Pistons au buzzer, did I mention that ?).

  Nuggets at Lakers

Tough Challenges

A loooooooot of work attend KB24 durant plusieurs semaines

Intro

3 jours se sont écoulés depuis la mutinerie générale à domicile visant Kwame Brown. 3 jours durant lesquels le visage de Los Angeles a encore changé. Exit Trevor Ariza indisponible pour approximativement 8 semaines, welcome DJ MBenga, in pour un minimum de 10 jours. Le belge aura du boulot pour combler les 13 points 10 rebonds et 2 contres par match laissé par Bynum (1er au pourcentage de réussite avec 63.6%). Car les Lakers ont lutté sans présences intérieures pour venir à bout des très modeste Sonics, nécessitant une prolongation ainsi que 48 points et un nouveau game winner de Kobe. Sans parler de la débâcle face aux Suns, seulement rythmée par le run de Sasha qui fêtait son retour.

Nouvelle série, nouveaux challenges. Si Kwame a quitté le vestiaire avant l’arrivé des journalistes vendredi dernier, il répond dans la presse 2 jours plus tard, s’excusant d’une part, déclarant sa motivation pour ce soir d’une autre. L’objectif est de taille puisqu’il trouvera Marcus Camby, meilleur défenseur NBA 2007, comme vis-à-vis. On a connu plus facile comme défis. KB54 se confortera peut être en défense car Marcus ne brille pas forcément offensivement cette saison (seulement 13 games à plus de 10 points cette saison). Heureusement pour LAL, Denver est également bien diminué dans la peinture. Après la triste mésaventure de Nene Hilario dont on ne peut se réjouir, c’est au tour de Martin et Hunter de rejoindre la liste des blessés.

Les Nuggets (24-15), sont à la lutte avec les très en forme Blazers pour la tête de la division Northwest. Actuellement en pôle position, (sous réserve du résultat Portland versus Atlanta), Carmelo et compagnie ont l’occasion de renforcer un peu plus leur avance en battant une top seed à l’ouest. Lors du dernier rendez-vous entre les deux franchises AI s’était fendu d’un superbe season high à 51 unités tout en concédant la défaite. LAL mène 2-0 face aux DN, une occasion d’asseoir un peu plus l’avantage psychologique pour les angelinos. Aller Nuggets at Lakers c’est soir 4.30 am (GMT Paris) sur NBAEvolution, pour fêter le Martin Luther King Day of course.

MBenga pour 10 jours

Comme prévu Los Angeles s’attache les services du pivot lâché par les Warriors pour une durée de 10 jours, une très bonne nouvelle depuis la blessure de Trevor Ariza hier soir. 15 joueurs composent de nouveau le roster des Lakers depuis le trade entre ces derniers et le Magic, ce qui semble mettre un terme aux rumeurs concernant Webber. Mbenga apportera donc toute son énergie en défense et devra composer en attaque ; une tâche qui d’embler appairait bien difficile.

Mbenga (uitgebreid profiel) blijft tot nader order de enige Belg in de NBA. Hij zat  enkele weken zonder ploeg nadat Golden State hem had laten gaan. Eerder speelde hij 3 seizoenen (sporadisch) voor de Dallas Mavericks.

Nu mag hij het purper en gouden shirt van de LA Lakers aantrekken. Hij moet daar ad interim de geblesseerde center Andrew Bynum helpen vervangen. Het contract zal maar over 10 dagen lopen en het valt te verwachten dat hij begin februari weer op straat staat.

Op de fora van de Laker-fans zitten ze niet te wachten op Mbenga’s diensten, ze geven de voorkeur aan meer gereputeerde spelers. Eén fan geeft deze harde maar behoorlijk accurate evaluatie:

Mbenga fouls too much, can’t stay on floor. He’s a foul machine.
- One of those physically gifted players who doesn’t get it…but if he does one day…
- Some say he’s offensively even worse than Kwame
- Plays very hard and fans love him
- Can block shots
- Hands so so
– No knowledge of the game whatsoever, therefore no IQ so to speak.

HE DIDNT EVEN TOUCH A BASKETBALL TILL THE AGE OF 19.

Het heeft niet veel zin om Mbenga’s dramatische jeugd opnieuw op te rakelen, al blijft die van het kaliber waar Oprah een half seizoen aan zou kunnen besteden. Een positieve noot? Hij komt terecht bij waarschijnlijk het bekendste basketbalteam ter wereld, met Kobe Bryant (3 titels) als absolute sterspeler en Phil Jackson (9 titels) als topcoach. Wie weet ziet die laatste wel in hem wat hij vroeger in Dennis Rodman zag: iemand die verdedigt, reboundt en verder niet al te veel in de weg loopt.
