This drawing was a rerendering of MC Escher bird piece. It was hard for me when making and my eyes started to hurt when drawing it, i think it could have been the optic illusion. Other then that it was fun looks nice on paper and was one of my better pictures from the summer and i got a good grade on it.

What’s a designer to do when told to pair down and get back to basics?  Do precisely that and wow their customers with innovative new staples. One route that appears to be gaining traction this upcoming season mimics the designs of the illusionary master, M.C Escher. This month’s cover of SOMA showcases a black and white checker print organza blouse by Alexander McQueen.  This sophisticated style transitions sharp geometrics into softer organic shapes.  We wonder if Ms. Winehouse has had an influence on this trend, as she’s sported this punk tank top for some time now.  Be it bird silhouettes or leopard print, we love it when math merges with nature for tactile wear.

Just what do the theoretical expansion stages of the universe look like?

you should love watching a kettle boil, or a star form, or a universe expand.

The space between the stars out in the great Cosmos is almost empty. By the standards of reference that we have on Earth, it would be called perfect vacuum. While the normal air contains slightly below one quadrillion of particles per cubic centimetre, the best vacuum that can be achieved in laboratories is about a billion of particles per cubic centimetre. The vacuum in outer space contains from 0,00001 up to less than 1 particle per cubic centimetre, which is far, far better than the best vacuum achieved on Earth.

Note: one quadrillion = 10²⁴ = 1 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000.

The materia in the inter-stellar space has a name: the Inter-stellar Medium, consisting mainly of hydrogen and helium.

When the condensation of particles exceeds 1 particle per cubic centimetre, we start talking about an inter-stellar cloud. And think now: if the inter-stellar cloud is that empty, then there is no mass inside it then. Both yes, and no..

A cubic centimetre or even a cubic kilometre of inter-stellar cloud contains a very limited number of particles and weighs extremely little. But the inter-stellar space is immense, so immense that the volume is no longer calculated in cubic centimetres or kilometres, but in years of light. And… a cloud of a few hundred cubic years of light will contain an extremely vast number of particles and will have a very substantial mass.

All particles in the cloud attract each other by gravitational force. According to calculations of scientists, a cloud having the mass comparable to the mass of our Sun can be self-sustained in the meaning that the gravitational force will keep it together. The cloud itself is very cold, somewhere around a hundred degrees Kelvin, that is far below -150ºC.

Home Improvement - MC Escher T-Shirt by Zomboy

MC Escher is an inspiration to countless creative people, partly for the genius in the detail, but also for the mathematical somersaults your mind does when you look at one of his images.

Zomboy produces some amazing designs, and this Escher ‘Relativity’ inspired vector shirt is also a stroke of genius.  The limited colours just bring out the detail amazingly well, with the shapes and angles being pixel perfect.

The added bonus with this design is that each decorator is painting with revolutionary transparent paint, so choose your shirt colour (from the 20+ colours in the Redbubble pallette) and that’s what colour they’ll be painting.  You’ll be a designer too!

It’s done. It has taken longer than I anticipated due to other projects and life getting in the way. I’ll be starting another one soon… hopefully this one won’t take 6 months to complete!  

This is the final version of the drawing from this post.

I transferred the original sketch onto illustration board and brushed on a thin layer of gesso. Just enough so it’s protected but I can still see the sketch underneath. The second step is to lay down the initial color with colored pencils and thin them out with turpentine. I do this to create a background layer and give it more dimension. Sometimes I do it more than once, if necessary. I then go over it with many different layers of colored pencils. I keep my pencils sharp and spray it with fixative if it gets to waxy and can’t take any more pigment.

Final drawing is 21.75″ x 6.5″ created with colored pencils.

View of a football game or any other sporting event is generally based preferences for the desired outcome. To one group of fans it was a great game, but it was a lousy game to the others. But hey – it was the same game! Ever read about the game from different reporters?

Science, history, philosophy, mathematics, politics, religion, economic, culture, and many others also provide perspectives. How one interprets these depends on their experiences and knowledge.

Artists can provide different perspectives. Visual perspective is based on how we see things based on the special dimensions of the object. The primary factor is the eye position relative to the object. Photographers also capitalize this in their 2-D images.

The graphical art perspective uses techniques on a flat surface giving our eyes a certain look. Which do you initially see: the old lady or the young lady? Which ever, can you see the other?

Perhaps to some, nobody captures the graphical perspective better than M.C.Escher, but what if Escher’s 2-D work was transformed into a computer simulation? Would it show each of us something else than I didn’t image? Check it out for yourself and enjoy.

Typically, it takes a lot to make my brain nearly implode. Due to my own personal experiences (not to mention some of the friends I choose to associate with), my senses have become dulled to shocking, absurd, and insane occurrences. I can listen to a friend seriously talk about his New World Order featuring a death penalty for people wearing flat-billed caps knocked to the side and laugh without concern. I can watch a congenital amputee fight an MMA match and – GASP – lose without shock at society’s gradual degradation. Sure, these things are stupid and should spark some sort of reaction from me rather than “how can I make that sound any funnier”…you know, some sort of worry, some sort of mind-numbing due to confusion…something!

…and then I encountered a secret service agent brandishing a plunger like a trumpet claiming to be working on the neighborhood sewer system, one of his many brilliant disguises concocted to hide his search for the Milk Man…

….that popping noise you just heard was your brain retreating into itself via the black hole of nonsense this statement just caused.

Psychonauts is a bizarre mash-up of Super Mario, drug induced hallucinations, one too many trips to the neighborhood psychiatrist, bacon, Godzilla, summer camp, hippies, circus acrobats, metrosexual super spies, Napoleon, Mexican Luchadors, and old school adventure games. Part of me wishes I could cook something like this up…then the other part of me realizes I’d be certifiably insane should such things be rendered capable of emerging from the depths of my already slightly demented mind. The fact that someone – in this case Double Fine Studios – managed to create this explosive cocktail of mental romping AND convince a game publisher to try selling it as a viable product is astounding. It’s epic failure to sell is not quite so astounding.

You see, Psychonauts is in many ways a flawed flawed game. It’s appearance is that of light hearted kiddie game of simplicity. Yet it’s control scheme is convoluted, its themes only fully appreciated by older gamers, and it’s weirdness so over the top it’s hard to initially want to start playing. It’s as if Double Fine is trying to teach appreciation of MC Escher and Carl Jung to a pack of 8 year olds. Thus, it is not surprising that only gaming critics seemed to actually want to play the darn thing.

It’s a damn shame, too, because Psychonauts is a damn fine game. How many games can you think of that have you wrestling cats resembling Rey Mysterio, investigating a cover up worthy of 9/11 conspiracy nutjobs, battling Napoleon, wrecking an entire metropolis of fish people, and trying to find the right timing to kiss the girl…all the while collecting fellow campers brains along the way?

Yes, I did just say that. Yes, all that happens in this game. Yes, you should play it.

Final Verdict: 9/10 Peanuts

Alrighty then, Happy Monday!  Here’s the latest tie from my closet . . . this one is a bit whimsical and is actually based on a design by M.C. Escher (believe it or not). 

And, since in my opinion the full tie photograph did not capture the detail well, I’ve added a second photo that’s a bit closer so that you can see more of the detail.   

M.C. Esceher

Well, it seems the memory card of my antique Olympus D-380 has finally croaked.  Below are the last photos I was able to take before the untimely demise.  Pictured is the Binnenhof, the “within (binnen) enclosure/fortress (hof)” which serves as the seat of parliament.  The building, magisterial in countenance yet pointy with iron chimneys, dates back to the 18th Century.  It’s quite possibly situated upon the “haag” (enclosing hedge) for which the city is named. Inside the courtyard is a plaque with a moving inscription memorializing the deaths of 54 Dutch intelligence agents who fought against the Nazi attack upon the building.  It reads,

Zij sprongen in de dood voor onze vrijheid.

They leapt into death for our freedom.

Much to my joy, I was able to decipher this entirely on my own!  I’ve thrown myself into the language here and I’m pleased to report that it’s been really enlightening me as to the what the Germanic languages have in common.  The grammar is very simple and flexible, and Dutch expressions seem to have retained a faint dynamism long since lost in English, as exampled by the inscription.

I’ve been on a tour of the museums here.  Thursday I went to the Mauritshuis where I saw the works of Rembrant and Vermeer, and let me tell you, in person you see why these men are called the “Masters”.  Friday I went to the MC Escher museum, which, for the boy in me, was a dream come true.  I saw some heretofore unpublished prints, including an early work of his entitled, “Paradise” (“Paradijs“).  Today I’m going to the municipal historical museum.  Would you believe that these are all within a few blocks of each other?!

By the way, the internet in my apartment is really spotty.  If you don’t hear from me for a day or two, don’t worry.  Hopefully the Apocalypse in the form of the Mexican Swine Flu hasn’t killed off me and the rest of the Netherlands.

Perhaps my eariler post today wasn’t your company.. but is this more like it?

The work is very good. His photographs are highly edited but they make you think of physical possibilities.
He’s not too far from being the photographer version to Mc Escher or Dali.

Boo-YEAH!

MC Escher was in fact an artist specialising in mathematical constructs and impossible illusions based around architecture, infinity and the like. He also was a hip hop artist, but only around friends and family.

I mention his mainly because it is the last day of geek blogging (specifically for the module that is) and the good MC is a staple for any good ‘old school’ geek. Old school because math and science don’t really need to apply so much nowadays.

He made some the greatest weird pictures that are instantly recognisable and mesmerising. They not only make for hours of viewing pleasure, but have inspired thousands upon thousands of tributes and homages to his work. Some funny and some disturbing. Others are more stylised:

Escher is all that’s good about geeky inspiration. Science, art and maths have never been so perfectly combined since his work.

So maybe that’s what being a geek should be about in the modern day and age – teach, encourage and blow your mind.

Living in one of the buildings in Michelle Bridges’ prints would be a challenge. They’re all canted floors and columns at odd angles, and there’s not a straight wall to be found. Forget sitting down for a cup of coffee in some of these places. You’d slide right out of the picture.

Bridges’ quirky architecture is a lot of fun to look at, though.

Her show at Dunn Bros Coffee includes depictions of such Kansas City landmarks as The Loretto on 39th Street and the Hotel Monroe in the Crossroads. (The latter, which she has reproduced as Hot Monroe, was the headquarters of Tom Pendergast’s political machine in the 1930s.)

Bridges reimagines these structures — and designs others from the slanted ground up – with a cartoonish charm. The tweaked perspectives and impossible angles, especially in her 16th Century Church with … pieces (one of which is pictured above), invite immediate comparison to M.C. Escher. The resemblance is undeniable, but it wouldn’t be fair to stop there. There’s a lot more going on here.

Bridges’ more colorful etchings, drawings and hand-pulled screenprints are worthwhile frivolity. They call to mind Saturday mornings in front of the television, eating bowlfuls of processed sugar and watching something silly directed by Tex Avery or Chuck Jones. The works where black and white predominate have a definite Charles Addams flavor — the taste of Addams’ drawn work, not the television show.

So if you’re feeling droopy or squirrelly, or maybe just need some extra bounce in your step, lurch on in to Dunn Bros Coffee and get two lifts: caffeinated and artistic. If you want to go for threefold happiness, pack a laptop — there’s free wifi — and make use of the links in this paragraph.

Dunn Bros is a franchise, but each store does its own roasting, and most locations support their areas’ musical and visual artists (including Bridges’ business partner, Richard Fritz, who has one piece on display in the coffeehouse). With that much local flavor, I’m more than fine with recommending the place.

It would probably be best, however, not to show up in pajamas, toting a teddy bear and a box of Frosted Flakes. Bridges’ art might take you back to those carefree childhood Saturday mornings, but dressing the part is likely to get you some funny looks.

Then again, everyone may be enjoying Bridges’ show too much to notice.
