With today being a holiday, I thought it would be fitting to celebrate this piece of work who obviously has no idea exactly which holiday it is.

Nearly a month after Halloween and worse, more than four months before St. Patrick’s Day, Homeskillet rolls up on the Light Rail in (I’m guessing) his idea of an O.G. pimp hat that more resembles the Lucky Charms Mascot’s attire.

Wait, no, Lucky the Leprechaun reminds me way to much of marshmallowy goodness and childhood. This guy reminded me more of this:

A little less "I'm going to give you a cavity," a little more "I'm going to watch you sleep tonight."

Add in his MC Hammer Pants and Flava Flav gold chain and I’m officially annoyed. Vanilla Ice had one hit and one hit ONLY for a reason.

On top of the ridiculous attire, this guys starts bobbing his head to his music (circa Eminem pre-rap battle in Eight Mile) and mouthing words so obnoxiously that I cannot help but watch and wonder.

I can only guess Vanilla Face is listening to:

A) Creed or

B) Nickelback

(I’m guessing Nickelback seeing as Creed has been kind enough to STFU for the last few years while Chad Kroger and his band mates who presumably live among his disgusting Canadian Jesus mullet can’t seem to stop churning out the audio vomit on a daily basis. But I digress…)

Either way, you FAIL, Slim Shady.

Jestem rychle po re-obejrzeniu “Boogie Nights” (P.T. Andersona). Świetny film, który z przymrużeniem oka przybliża widzowi branżę filmów porno w latach 70-tych. Ale nie jest to dokument typu “Inside Deep Throat” (który tłumaczy socjologicznie zjawiska popularności “gatunku” w tamtych latach), to zgrabna fabuła z interesującymi kreacjami aktorskimi (Mark Wahlberg, Burt Reynolds, Julianne Moore) i doskonała dbałość o szczegóły (której brakuje w rodzimej produkcji filmowej, a tak mogłoby być pięknie w filmach typu “Ile waży Koń Trojański?”).

Ale, ale… o czym ja tu! Mark Wahlberg, no właśnie. Pamiętacie jak ten – dziś już uznany i szanowany aktor – jako młodzian biegał po scenie i tworzył “biały hip-hop”, który przez purystów gatunku był odrzucany i raczej sarkastycznie traktowany, ale przez popkulturę wielbiony? Pamiętacie jak Mark Wahlberg zwał się Marky Mark i tworzył na początku lat 90-tych pop-rapowe pogadanki? Sprzedawał dużo, jego duo z panem Prince Ital Joe (mimo wybitnie quasi-reggae-pop-rapowego charakteru) okupowało pierwsze miejsca list przebojów po obu stronach oceanu.

To jeden z jego klipów, który znalazłem w przepastnych archiwach YouTube! Młodsi nie pamiętają, jak Marky Mark tą piosenką stawiał pomnik naszemu(!) pięściarzowi, Dariuszowi Michalczewskiemu (w teledysku, do obejrzenia).

Dzisiaj, kiedy nieśmiało mówi się o spadku popularności rapu/hip-hopu (zgrabnie o tym pisze Mariusz Herma w “Przekroju” nr 46/17.11.09), warto przypomnieć sobie jego korzenie! Na blogu Bartka Chacińskiego (http://chacinski.wordpress.com/) znajdziecie klip Sugarhill Gang z kawałkiem “Raper’s Delight” (uważany za jeden z pierwszych gadanych numerów). Może kończy się pewna epoka w muzyce, która nieśmiało wchodziła do naszej świadomości już od końca lat 70., skradała się i ukrywała w latach 80., by eksplodować w 90., na początku jako domena “niekolorowa” – później jako królestwo czarnych z Eminemem jako wyjątkiem. Oczywiście, w ogóle nie mam zamiaru wchodzić w polemikę typu “co jest prawdziwym rapem”, “kto się sprzedał”, “to przecież hip-hopolo”. Nie mam zamiaru dissować z rodzimymi tuzami sceny, nigdy nie wdziałem szerokich spodni. Jako obserwator “z zewnątrz”, przypominam sobie niemal z sentymentem pewne zjawiska, które dzisiaj zdecydowanie śmieszą!

Pamiętacie MC Hammera z jego samplowanym “U Can’t Touch This”? Nie możecie nie pamiętać! Toż to hit był. A pamiętacie Vanilla Ice z jego samplowanym “Ice Ice Baby”? Ten pierwszy posłużył się motywem z utworu Ricka Jamesa “Super Freak”, ten drugi (do końca zaprzeczał) uszczknął nieco z “Under Pressure” Queen+David Bowie. Wszystkie te nagrania, w dobie internetu, można natychmiast odszukać i cieszyć się nimi. To już archiwalia. Dzisiaj 10 lat w muzyce, to dynamiczna epoka!

W każdym razie Vanilla Ice był białym gniewnym MC, który “za bardzo się starał”! Był takim “one hit wonder“, który po “Ice Ice Baby” nie powtórzył już sukcesu (później nagrał “Hard To Swallow” pod okiem Rossa Robinsona i brzmiał jak Korn!).

Pośród tych wszystkich uroczych panów, był jeszcze niejaki Dee Dee Ramone! Tak, ten z Ramones. On też w pewnym okresie swojej podupadającej kariery, postanowił nagrać rapowy krążek. Jak postanowił – tak i zrobił. Pod koniec lat 80. powstała więc płyta, która przez wielu tytułowana jest dzisiaj “najgorszą płytą świata”. To “Standing In The Spotlight” sygnowane pseudonimem Dee Dee King! Ten niechlubny wyczyn chyba zniechęcił, nieżyjącego już dzisiaj muzyka – do dalszych eksperymentów.

No a potem rozpoczęła się era rapu/hip-hopu, która trwa do dziś, chociaż z tego cut & paste ostatnio widzimy tylko fade out! Warto tym samym przypomnieć sobie pewne marginalne wyczyny – opisanych wyżej panów, z sentymentu, dla zwykłej radochy. A impreza przy tej muzyce, to byłby niezły flow. Zatem zapraszam do obejrzenia/odsłuchania wczesnych ziomali, którzy “za bardzo się starali”. Tacy wcześni “wangster” - wanna be gangster!

In einem Interview mit der australischen Zeitung The Age erklärte der Senior Rap Star MC Hammer: “Der Ansatz der Musikindustrie für den Kampf gegen Piraterie war falsch”.

Und weiter erläutert er: “Wenn jemand mit einer Schusswaffe ermordet wird, wird dann der Typ im Waffengeschäft verhaftet und eingesperrt? Nein, wird er nicht. Sie schnappen sich den Typen, der die Tat begangen hat. Und wenn jemand was klaut und mit dem Auto wegfährt, kann man nicht die Strassenbaufirma verklagen”.

Und überhaupt sieht er die Zeichen der Zeit: “Die CD ist der Wachszylinder von heute. Ein Sammlerstück. Aber um sie auszupacken, brauchst du ein Messer. Und wenn du die Verpackung endlich auf hast, nimmst du sie und lädst sie in deinen Computer”.

Er selbst setzt auf digitale Verkäufe, auf Vermarktung über Musikspiele und auf seine 1,6 Millionen Twitter-Follower. Oben ein Video aus Hammers grosser Zeit, und ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob mir seine Art von Musik wirklich gefällt. Aber darum gehts hier ja auch nicht.

As some one who lived through the 80’s I have some memories. Some are fond, some are blurry and many of them are tainted with the recollection of really bad fashion. Mullets, frosted hair, acid wash, stirrup pants and enormous shoulder pads all evolved during this time period and with the “power of Greyskull” that is where it all should stay.

Unfortunately, one of these trends just won’t die are harem pants. The diaper like garment are being touted by many fashion magazines as the hot trend (for shame Lucky Mag). However, us common folk most likely associate this look with M.C. Hammer:

Even though his third album pleaded to the rap master “Please Hammer, Don’t Hurt ‘Em” this shapeless pant craze did exactly that. The Hammer was smart with his style choices. He picked up on a pant style that dated back to the 16th century and made it his own and the end result was brilliant marketing.

However if you are a pear shaped woman looking to put your mark on the harem pants movement, the simple answer is DON’T. The extra draping of the fabric will just add unwanted visual inches onto your lower torso plus it will always look like you are carrying an extra load of something.

Even gorgeous tennis pro Maria Sharapova had trouble pulling off this look and if anyone could look hot in a white, swaddle inspired style it is this vixen:

How ever considering MC Hammer is a big bloke I was amused by this paragraph;
“it’s unbelievable when you’re trying to open a CD, right? You need a box cutter … it’s a tough deal to get it open.”

First there was Hammer, then there was Nas, then there was Meth and now there’s Flavor Flav.

Flavor Flav is the latest MC to conveniently “forget” to pay money owed to the government.

The state of California is tracking down Flav, real name William Drayton, for delinquent tax payments. According to the state, Flav owes $183,810 in unpaid tax payments and a lien was filed against him in a Sacramento court room. Flav has yet to comment.

As previously reported, Method Man was arrested in October for back taxes, Nas was outed for owing $1.5 million in taxes and MC Hammer was reported for owing over $600,000.

This is ridiculous, pay yo bills people!

When it comes to MC Hammer, there are a few things you can’t touch (and probably don’t want to either). Now dig your mind out of the gutter – I’m talking about the big man’s style here. We all heard about his love for fresh new kicks and we’ve certainly all seen the Hammer pants (which are making a comeback btw). What really caught us by surprise, is the enormous ticker bling he was rolling with on his wrist last night.

The rap legend jumped on the bandwagon with celebrities like Fergie, Nelly, Ludacris, Lindsay Lohan, Jessica Alba and Paris Hilton to name a few, and quickly became fond of the Invicta Watches.

Mr. Schwarzenegger also likes to show ‘em that he’s-too-much with his larger-than-life Invicta Russian Diver timepiece.

Latin for ‘invincible’, Invicta was founded in Switzerland by Raphael Picard, who had the radical notion that fine Swiss timepieces could be offered at modest prices – just in time for the GFC, right?

I didn’t go to the Sydney Social Media Club function last night where MC Hammer was talking about social media. I can’t say whether it was insightful enough so I recruited Di Chua, an amazing up and coming Social Media Strategist at DDB Radar to write a guest post for me. It was a packed house at UTS for the Social Media Club lecture where MC Hammer spoke about his social media experiences. He’s the 14^th most influential Twitterer (according to WeFollow) with more than 1.5 million followers. I love MC Hammer and know all his dance steps… So while there were “intellectuals” in the room, I was just dying to scream “I LOVE YOUUuuu!”

Amazingly, he’s more than just a rap star, he actually knows his sh*t.  I have much respect for this guy because he’s in the fireline. I’m in the trenches myself (listening, planning conversational campaigns and managing communities) and it’s really not as easy as it seems. So BOO to all you Hammer haters out there… Do it first, and then judge!

 MC Hammer’s 4 rules for Brands in Social Media:

1)      “Never let someone else tell your story”

- Ties in with authenticity and transparency

- connecting with people humanises your brand

2)      “Be at the center of the flow of information”

- be a “super geek”- you have to touch it, feel it, experience it. He has loads of  smart phones and screens

 - listen and monitor conversations (he even has a screen in his bathroom!)

3) “Perception is more valuable than reality”

- So make sure you manage it

- stay ahead of the story through Rule #2

 4) “If you’re not connected, what are you hiding from as a brand? “

- Don’t run, Engage!

- again transparency is key, people will be suspicious if you’re not open

And finally, he said one must establish a culture in your community. So if someone is being negative and not adding value to your experience then block them. “If you negative, I block you!

The question of the night-

Some interesting learnings here from MC Hammer, although they have to be couched by the fact that often with celebrities they have ‘follow factor’ built in to their handles by virtue of who they are. So applying the same principals to a brand trying to leverage social media needs to be taken with a grain of salt somewhat in my view.

So in a previous post I rambled on about the imbalance of passion and reason when talking social media. Last night at Sydney’s Social Media Club, MC Hammer spoke to an auditorium of social media types who probably would have admitted to being there merely for the retro kick. Mr Hammer won over (the majority of) the crowd with a balance of passion and reason, in a style that proved that he gets it, so he shares it.

Comfortable with his commercial intentions, Hammerpants talked sponsorship, personal branding, citizen journalism, the entrepreneurial spirit, gadgets, offspring hammerpants, social media heroes, ghost-twittering, blocking and even managed to slip in the crowd pleasing “you can’t touch the concept of hammertime”. It may not have been polished and some of his ideas may have seemed disconnected as he sidestepped off on tangents (not that there’s anything wrong with that!) but in the end he spoke with a lot of passion and a lot of reason. Yup, Stanley Kirk Burrell is 2 legit 2 quit. Break it down.

Battleship — As we’ve reported in the Index in the past, Peter Berg is set to direct a feature-length film based on the intellectual property of the children’s board game Battleship. That’s already absurd enough. Now we learn it’s about aliens. Of course. I look forward to the screen version of Hungry Hungry Hippos, which reportedly will be the deconstruction of the American family after a vicious secret comes to light, and Uno, which will be directed by Pedro Almodóvar.

Fanning, Dakota — The Twilight: New Moon star explained to MTV that she became very close to colleague Kristen Stewart during the filming of the tween vamp sequel. “She’s so great…I’ve had so much fun with her,” said Fanning. This immediately troubled the Robodyne Corporation, which programmed Fanning not to feel emotions like “fun,” but rather to follow her prime directive of destroying her competition with lasers. Hammer, MC — The rapper told Australia’s Herald Sun that life’s so good for him right now that his trademark fashion is staging a comeback. “My Hammer pants are being made  by six or seven of the world’s finest designers,” he tells the Herald Sun. “In 2009 they were some of the best selling pants in high fashion. I got the new ones, I got the Versace, I got the Christian Dior Homme Hammer pants, they are really nice.” This figures, because everything’s backwards in Australia. Winter is summer. Toilets flush the opposite way. Hammer is still famous. Isn’t that how it works?

Kardashian, Khloe — The Kardashians celebrated sister Khloe’s wedding all over again when E!’s Keeping Up With the Kardashians aired the wedding episode featuring Khloe and Laker Lamar Odom’s wedding. The airing brought in a staggering 30.7 million viewers — though many tuned out during reception footage where Kardashian grotesquely attacked and ate several children.

Riches, Jonathan Lee — An Illinois prison inmate has, in a series of handwritten scrawlings, submitted to the courts that he fathered the children of both Kate Gosselin and Octomom Nadya Suleman and wants custody of his alleged children. If this is true, we finally have the head vampire. He must be destroyed.

Rockys, One Thousand — To commemorate the release of the DVD and Blu-Ray of Rocky: The Undisputed Collection, Philadelphia saw a “Parade of 1,000 Rockys” as the masses congregated to run up the infamous steps of the Philadephia Museum of Art. I’d planned on covering this event personally, but fellow Indexer Matt Shorr and I were too busy helming the “Parade of 2 Detective Doug Bigelows” in celebration of the 21st anniversary of the Joe Piscopo-Treat Williams cop thriller Dead Heat.

Street, Sesame – Today marks the 40th anniversary of Sesame Street. The New York Times celebrates with an interview with Big Bird in which we discover that he’s a condor and executive producers answer the question of whether Snuffy was ever real. Google has run muppet-centric search bars for a week, and the First Lady will appear on the show this morning. Here at TBTS, however, we just say thanks for teaching us how to read and count, and raise a glass of milk today to the Children’s Television Workshop. And to many, many more happy years.

All the junk in the world you could ever want...marked up 600%

I was speeding from one work event to a second one yesterday, when I noticed a tag sale.  Naturally, I decided that it was the perfect time to pull over and check to see if I could get myself a much needed piece of furniture for my room: a coffee table.  It was pretty much the perfect accelerated shopping experience; I saw the item i wanted, perused 3 other options, then asked the guy how much.  He tried to sell it to me for $20, I pointed out that a smaller one was worth $15, he caved quickly, saying he could give it to me for $15.  At this moment, I faced a make or break.  I could take him to the limit (knowing I could probably get it for $10 ultimately) but I’d run the risk of blowing my cover and having my superiors know that I stopped during the workday to haggle street side over furniture – or, I could stretch the value of my purchase even further.

I noticed a box of cassette tapes and  casually asked, “yo can I get some of those thrown in?”  The guy shrugged, “yea, sure, the hell am I gonna do those.  Take whatever.”  What he didn’t know is that I spotted some pretty primo albums.

Thanks to my powerful skills of negotiation, I am now in possession of 3 new used cassettes, classics every one of them.  And through the magic of the internet, from the platform of this blog, allow me to share with you my acquisitions of MC Hammer’s Please Hammer, Don’t Hurt ‘em, Paul Simon’s Graceland, and Sam Cooke’s The Man and His Music.

This early film by the Lumiere Brothers was hand-tinted, giving the dancer’s flowering skirt a bright, Mediterranean tone, as if it were a human-version of a Delaunay painting.

My favorite character on Twin Peaks is Audrey. Like the dancer in the Lumiere Brothers’ film, Audrey’s slow, slumbering, Zen-like dance recalls trends in conceptual art and music more than “the running man,” popularized by MC Hammer around the same time.
