John

This years Macy parade made it clear that they fujlly imtend to eliminate any referenced to Christrmas. Santa, the children’s symbol of Christmas did not mention Christmas but rather greeted the crowd with “Happy Thanksgiving.” Last year Santa said nothing. What’s coming next is probably Happy Holiday.

Please urge the troops to contact Macys and express their displeasure by shopping elsewhere.

 customer service@Macys.com

It’s about time we stood up.

Jim Fennell ‘51

[JR: Jim, I didn't see the end of the parade. I always watch a little and go back to the happier times when life was simple. Mom and I went to the parade. Wish I could roll back the tape and do it again. How much smarter I'd be. Did anyone see the end of the parade and can confirm what Santa did or didn't say? If they are doing that "Happy Hoy Days" stuff, it deserves a reaction.]

Battelle to develop its water treatment programs
9/29/2009 4:33:49 PM

*** begin quote ***

COLUMBUS, OH — Nonprofit independent research and development organization Battelle Memorial Institute (Batelle) has hired John McArdle to coordinate its research and commercial activities in water and wastewater treatment technologies, according to a September 9 Battelle press release.

Prior to joining Battelle, McArdle, a recognized expert in water and wastewater treatment technologies with an emphasis on membrane filtration, worked for Koch Membranes Systems Inc. as director of business development and business manager for industrial water, the release said. In these positions, McArdle was responsible for the commercial introduction of membrane filtration technologies in several novel water and wastewater treatment applications. He also was closely involved with the introduction of membrane filtration technology into the very rapidly growing water and wastewater treatment markets of China and India.

In the newly created Battelle position — manager of business development, water technology — McArdle initially will focus on the development of Battelle’s worldwide strategy in collaboration with the national laboratories that Battelle manages and co-manages for the Department of Energy.

*** and ***

McArdle has a bachelor’s in chemical engineering from Manhattan College, a master’s in chemical engineering from Northeastern University, and an M.B.A. in finance and international business from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

Francis X. “Frank” Geissler

GEISSLER, Francis X. “Frank” Francis X. Geissler “Frank” died peacefully at Connecticut Hospice after a courageous 18-month battle with cancer. He has returned to Heaven to join his Lord and many wonderful family and friends. Frank was married to the love of his life, Joan Elizabeth Christophel Geissler, for 51 wonderful years. He was the adored father of Anne-Marie Geissler of Groton; Frank Geissler and his wife, Lisa, of Farmington; Stephen Geissler and his wife, Susan, of Burlington; and Mary Beth Geissler of Mystic. He leaves behind seven beloved grandchildren, Michael, Emma, John, Andrew and Matthew Geissler and Sam and Gillian Jordan, who will always lovingly remember him as their “Pop”. He was predeceased by his sister, Barbara Geissler Sekreta, and leaves behind a brother, Paul Geissler of Baton Rouge, LA. He will also be dearly missed by his many nieces and nephews, and by Zoey, Bubba and Hammie (family pets).

Frank was born in 1929 in New York City to Francis and Anna Geissler and he lived in the City until he was married to Joan in 1957. A graduate of Regis High School, Manhattan College and New York University, Frank had a successful career as an electrical engineer. He was employed as an engineer at American Bosch Arma Corp. and Airborne Instruments both on Long Island and then later as General Manager of Cramer Corporation in Old Saybrook. He founded Microtechnologies, Inc. in 1980 with his son, Frank, and remained active in the corporation until his death. Frank, Joan and their children moved to Westbrook in 1969 and were always active in both St. Mark’s Church and their community.

Frank loved to sail the waters of Long Island Sound, and he traveled extensively with his wife, and often with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed many wonderful friendships throughout his life; and he will be missed by family and friends. With such wonderful friends, family and spouse and life, Frank has set a very high standard for his children to live up to, but they intend to do their best. Frank’s family wishes to thank the many wonderful physicians, nurses and healthcare providers who cared for him during his illness, especially those at Memorial Sloan Kettering and Connecticut Hospice.

Visitation will be held on Friday, June 19, from 5-8 p.m. at the Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home, 34 Main Street, Centerbrook. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday morning, June 20, at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Mark’s Church, 222 McVeagh Road, Westbrook, CT 06498. Burial will follow in the Resurrection Cemetery, Westbrook. In lieu of flowers, donations in Frank’s memory may be made to The Connecticut Hospice, Inc., 100 Double Beach Road, Branford, CT 06405 or to Saint Mark’s Church.

*** begin quote ***

Original : Seated in back of empty Manhattan College auditorium, Riverdale, N.Y. Winter, 1950-1951

 The Piano Player

The falling snow was settling on the stairs

He came inside and shook his snowy coat

And now, beside the drapes and empty chairs

He sits and sounds a lone piano key.

And then he gently moves from note to note

 Descending, rising, blending, breaking free,

Or circling round as if by breezes swirled.

Anew there is the settling of the snow

But now, the atmosphere is in his private world.

 An Seinnteoir Pianó

Bhí sneachta ag cur an staighre faoina chlúid

Translation into Irish: Northport, N.Y. 11 December, 2003.

 Raymond J. Clark

Réamonn Ó Cléirigh

Comment: Rather than go into the crowded library to study when I had no class, I would sit on a bench outside. But a gentle snow began to fall, so I took my books inside the empty auditorium and sat in the back row of seats. After a little while a man came in, shook the snow from his coat, didn’t seem to see me, and walked straight down to the piano near the stage. He struck a single note, then sat down and began to play a long piece of music. I stopped studying and listened. I could see the snow floating down outside the windows and the snow flakes seemed to follow the music. Suddenly, I got an inspiration. I switched that around. I imagined the music was following the snow. I decided to make up a poem.

In the first four lines I describe the real event down to the single sound on the piano. In the next three lines I try to describe the music in words that would also suit gently falling snow. And if the music notes were snow flakes, the air they were falling through had to be in another dimension or world. In the final two lines, I imagine that the music snow is settling within the soul or spirit of the piano player.

In the Irish version, the word ‘uaigneach,’ which means ‘lonely,’ fits the mood of the music he played that day.

*** end quote ***

Catholic Schools Week culminates with Mass
By PETE SKIBA (Contact)
Friday, January 30, 2009

NAPLES — The St. John Neumann’s Celtics basketball team wasn’t tearing up the court with lay-ups, but everyone in the gym caught the positive vibration of Friday morning’s event.

Bishop Frank J. Dewane came to the gym to celebrate with a Mass the faith, tradition and the doctrines Catholic education instills in its students. The Mass culminated a week-long, Catholic Schools Week 2009 observed nationally and throughout Dewane’s seven-county Diocese of Venice.

{Extraneous Deleted}

Retired without relatives in any of the schools, Naples resident Peter Barry, 81, attended Mass because he is a firm believer in Catholic education.

“I am a product of Catholic education,” Barry, a retired businessman said. “I graduated from Fordham Prep in New York and Manhattan College a (Christian) Brothers’ school. Catholic schools give an education rooted in firm values. And I came because the bishop is here.”
