In the last post, I predicted the winner of this year’s Masters and said the next post would be the predicting winner for this year’s US Open. The US Open this year will be played at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pennsylvania. Merion is famous for having wicker baskets on top of their pins instead of flag sticks, and is a relatively short course, with the US Open tees being 6,846 yards and a par 70. To put this in perspective, last year’s US Open at Olympic played 7,170 yards, also at a par of 70, and the 2011 US Open at Congressional was 7,574 yards at a par 71. This makes this year’s US Open interesting because it doesn’t eliminate shorter hitters from the mix, puts a premium on accuracy and control, and basically leaves the Championship open for anybody. Experience can’t really be a factor here, either, as the last US Open played at Merion was in 1981. The 2005 US Amateur was played at Merion as well, and was won by Edoardo Molinari, who may not play the US Open this year, as he did not last year, and even of he plays it’s unlikely he would be a factor. Since this is a US Open, fairways must be hit, but it should be a little easier because you probably don’t have to hit driver on most holes since the course is so short. Speaking of the course being so short, a lot of approach shots are going to be coming with wedges, which hurts bombers like Dustin Johnson, Keegan Bradley, or Bubba Watson that have a tougher time controlling their wedge shots. Tiger Woods can be considered a favorite to win since he is smart enough to recognize he doesn’t need to hit driver off a lot of holes (he hit 1 driver during the ENTIRE 2006 Open Championship). His distance control has also been a lot better this year, as he ranks second in distance from the hole in approach shots from 100-125 yards. Luke Donald has long been considered one of the best to never win a major, and he has also been considered one of the best wedge players on Tour, as well as one of the best putters and having one of the best short games, so he can also be considered a favorite. Brandt Snedeker is considered by many to be the best putter on Tour, although he has not putted as well so far this year, I believe he will turn it around. He is also very good at hitting fairways so he is another favorite. I can’t see Webb Simpson defending his title since he has not driven the ball well this year or played well with his wedges. Same thing applies to guys like Phil Mickelson or Hunter Mahan. It’s difficult to tell how Rory McIlroy will do since he has not played in a month since not making the cut in Abu Dhabi, but like I said before I don’t think he wins a major this year, as he needs some time to adjust to his Nike gear. Like I said, this will come down to Tiger Woods, Luke Donald, or Brandt Snedeker. This is a tough call, as Tiger has only played one event this year (that he won), Luke is playing in his first event of the year at Riviera (where he is playing well) and Snedeker has been on fire so far this year, winning at Pebble Beach, finishing second twice, third once, and never outside the top-25, although it will be interesting to see how he comes back from his rib injury. If I was correct in my Masters prediction, I believe I will also be correct in this prediction, since “post-incident” Tiger will have gotten over that “first-major” hump and will start to roll in collecting majors again.

Predicted Winner: Tiger Woods

There will be another US Open prediction post on US Open week.

Next post will be the 2013 Open Championship prediction.

With the 2013 PGA Tour season in full swing, it’s not too early to be thinking about the major

With the 2013 PGA Tour season in full swing, it’s not too early to be thinking about the majors for this year, especially since the Masters is only two months away. The Masters, like always, will be played at Augusta National, in Augusta, Georgia. The U.S. Open will be played at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pennsylvania this year. This year’s Open Championship will be played at Muirfield Golf Club in the United Kingdom, and the PGA Championship will be played at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York.

The Masters

Last year’s Masters Champion, lefty Bubba Watson, beat South African Louis Oosthuizen in a playoff with the famous hook shot he hit from the pine straw 155 yards to the 10th green. The tee shots at Augusta National mostly favor right-to-left tee shots, so you need to be able to shape the ball to play well there. This in theory makes tee shots easier for lefties, as their right-to-left shots (cuts) are much easier to control than a right-handed player’s right-to-left shot (draw). Tiger Woods has been the favorite to win the Masters this year for a while now, especially since his win at Torrey Pines. If he can hit his driver like he did the first 3 rounds, he will win the Masters this year. Unfortunately his driver was all over the place in his final round, so we don’t know which Tiger will show up for the 2013 Masters. We’ll get a better idea as he plays more, since the Farmers Insurance Open was the only tournament he’s played so far this year. Right now he’s slated to play the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship next, then he’ll probably play the Honda Classic since he played so well there last year, the WGC Cadillac Championship, and the Arnold Palmer Invitational that he won last year. After he plays some more events we’ll get a better idea on how he’ll do. The fact that he’s won four green jackets and has numerous other great finishes at Augusta automatically helps him a lot. Someone else that shouldn’t be overlooked with three green jackets is Lefty, Phil Mickelson. The new Callaway driver he’s been using has helped him drive the ball beautifully, evidenced by his record win at the Waste Management Open in Phoenix, Arizona, and his near-59. If he continues what he’s been doing he also has a great chance of winning the Masters. This could be the year we finally see a Tiger-Phil duel in a major that everyone has been waiting so long to see. As for the other suspects, it’s too early to expect Rory McIlory to win there with his new Nike clubs, especially since he’s struggled at Augusta so much in the last few years. Dustin Johnson has struggled a bit since his 54-hole win at Kapulua in the beginning of this year, and he would need to drive the ball a little better to do well there. Keegan Bradley is actually a good bet, since he can hit the ball so far with good control and putt so well. Adam Scott is going to be Australia’s best chance for a first green jacket for quite a while. Augusta National is a bit long for Luke Donald to be considered a serious favorite, same thing with Brandt Snedeker, despite his close call in 2008. Lee Westwood is usually some people’s favorite to win, but at this point I think it’s too late for him. If Justin Rose plays consistently enough he can be a threat to win. I can’t see Bubba repeating based on how he has played since the 2012 Masters. Webb Simpson hasn’t played well enough since winning the 2012 US Open to be considered a favorite, either. It was nice to see Ernie Els win the Open Championship last year but there’s a good chance that’s the last major win of his career. Nick Watney has played pretty well so far this year, so he can be considered a favorite depending on how he plays in the next 2 months. As of right now, the two favorites should be Phil and Tiger, with a slight edge going to Tiger, because if they both drive the ball well then Tiger will win, but if Tiger is erratic it’s basically a push because of how well Tiger can recover and how well he has played in past Masters despite an erratic driver (see 2009-2011).

Predicted Winner: Tiger Woods

At the tender age of 23, Rory McIlroy can boast of 2 major wins,10 professional victories, world num

At the tender age of 23, Rory McIlroy can boast of 2 major wins,10 professional victories, world number one status and 2 Ryder Cups, but as Nike know there is more to the boy from Holywood than just that.

Nike prides itself on being the best in whatever field of sport, previous ambassadors include Michael Jordan in the NBA, Cristiano Ronaldo in World Soccer, Roger Federer in Tennis and Tiger Woods in Golf, now McIlroy joins the elite list with a $250 million 10 year deal.

This deal is beyond the fairways of the golf course but on the shelves of Nike stores. Air Jordan, CR9, RF and TW collections proves athletes are part of the product building process and don`t be surprised to see Rory follow suit, the Northern Irishman ranks second on the list of the most marketable athletes in the world only behind Brazilian Soccer star and face for the Rio Olympics, Neymar.

In the midst of the Tiger Woods scandal it seems Nike have brought in Rory to replace arguably one of the greatest sportsmen in history as the face of Nike Golf .

Their rivalry intensifies on and off the course.

And even on the driving range…

It’s a clever move from Nike for several reasons, Rors became only the second player to win the money title on the PGA Tour and European Tour in the same year. Golf is now a global sport and having the PGA Tour and European Golfer of the Year ensures Nike have a world-renowned athlete that they can enter new golfing markets with.

The magnitude of a $250 million 10 year contract suggests Nike may play a part in determining what events Rory plays in and therefore they can aim to market the brand in countries where golf is growing and develop brand recognition.

Nike’s golf revenue dropped 2% in 2010 and 4% in 2011 following Tiger Wood’s sex scandal and the arrest of NFL Quarterback Michael Vick along with Lance Armstrong’s drug scandal has damaged the image of the company and Rory can be at the forefront of the re-building process.

Rory has that likeability factor and clean-cut image which separates him from everyone else, the way he has dealt with adversity in his career such as his meltdown at the Masters where he threw away a four shot lead going into the final day was admirable and many would have struggled to come back from such disappointment.

The question I pose is whether Nike have brought in McIlroy to be the iconic figure of Nike Golf or to reignite the career of Tiger Woods?

Unlike Gatorade, Accenture, AT&T and Gillette, Nike stood by their Billion Dollar man. Why? Because he transcended the game of golf, changed opinions, bridged racial gaps in the game and performed to a standard few have matched. Despite his current form on the course and reputation off it, Nike are well aware they have an athlete who could make one of the greatest returns to greatness in sporting history, therefore generating brand awareness, interest and sales.

Bringing McIlroy into the Nike family may be a final warning to Tiger that he needs to up his game and regain the form that has seen him become a legend of the sport in order to remain with the brand, or else Nike now have someone more than capable enough of carrying on the legacy Tiger has laid down. McIlroy may not make an immediate impact with Nike that Tiger has but he is set to be his long term successor.

Although having said that, check out this kid! Watch out Rory…

January 14, 2013 Rory McIlroy’s rocket ride to immortality publicly entered its second phase Monday

January 14, 2013

Rory McIlroy’s rocket ride to immortality publicly entered its second phase Monday with the official announcement of his sponsorship with Nike, whose equipment and apparel he will exhibit starting this week at his 2013 debut beside Tiger Woods, Nike’s first golfing icon, in the United Arab Emirates.

To reach the next stratosphere of stardom, McIlroy, 23, of Northern Ireland, had to separate from Titleist, the club and ball manufacturer that got him started, and ride the global marketing might of Nike, which, he said in a news conference, “has always been associated with the best athletes in the world.”

McIlroy, the world No. 1 and the only active golfer younger than 40 other than Woods to have at least two major titles, joins a constellation of sports superstars representing the swoosh label that includes Woods, the tennis player Roger Federer and the Miami Heat’s LeBron James. “It’s a proud moment for me, and something I’ve been looking forward to,” McIlroy said.

The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the contract is reported to be worth as much as $100 million over five years to $250 million over 10 years provided McIlroy reaches a long list of incentives. Although the money is mind-boggling, McIlroy suggested that his motivation was less about building his bank account than his brand when he said: “It’s a company and a brand that really resonates with me. It’s young. It’s athletic. It’s innovative. They are committed to being the best, as am I. Signing with Nike is another step towards living out my dream.”

The path of golfers who have cashed in on their success by changing equipment is well-traveled and includes Phil Mickelson, who moved to Callaway from Titleist in the wake of his victory at the 2004 Masters, and McIlroy’s countryman Graeme McDowell, who jumped to Cleveland and Srixon from Callaway after winning the 2010 United States Open.

Mickelson won four times on tour in 2005. The adjustment is not always so seamless. It took McDowell nearly two years to record his first victory with his new clubs. Golf being equal parts mechanical and mental, it is impossible to predict how a new club will affect a player’s swing or scores.

Change always carries risk, but McDowell has little reason to fret for McIlroy. “I think 20 years ago, it would have been a monster move and perhaps a mistake,” McDowell said last month. “I think as we sit here, there’s about 6, 8, 10 golf manufacturers on the planet that are making incredibly good equipment, and I don’t think there’s such a thing as inferior equipment nowadays.”

McIlroy, who had four PGA Tour victories in 2012, including his second major, said he had thoroughly tested the Nike equipment and was buoyed by the results. “I’m getting more distance out of the driver and the ball,” he said. “I’m comfortable with the irons.” He added, “I’m excited to put the clubs in play.”

McIlroy and Woods have forged a friendship, but McIlroy insisted he was not influenced by Woods. “I didn’t speak about it to Tiger,” he said, adding, “We didn’t talk about it at all until after it was all done.”

Of course, after it was all done, they filmed a commercial in which they try to one-up each other. The spot, which will start appearing this week, calls to mind a McDonald’s commercial in the 1990s featuring Michael Jordan and Larry Bird engaged in a game of Horse.

Asked last month about equipment changes during his tournament last month at Sherwood Country Club, Woods said it could take anywhere from a few weeks to more than a year to become comfortable with new equipment. “It’s worth it in the end if you get it right, and over the course of my career, I haven’t put anything in my bag unless I knew it was already better,” Woods said. “But that’s just because of all the testing I’ve done prior to that.”

He added: “Forget what it does on the range, or it’s important what it does on the range, but what is it going to do on the back nine on Sunday? Is this equipment, in general, is this going to help me win golf tournaments?”

After winning last year’s P.G.A. Championship by eight shots, McIlroy could be forgiven for feeling as if he could put persimmon woods in his bag and win. Only time will tell whether McIlroy’s gamble rockets him to the next level or fizzles.

First impressions on Nike’s big announcement regarding sponsorship of Rory McIlroy: What the h

First impressions on Nike’s big announcement regarding sponsorship of Rory McIlroy:

What the hell was that? I didn’t know whether to bow or to throw a giant hammer. I kept waiting for Tupac to appear and rap about Rory’s new golf clubs. Coachella in Abu Dhabi?

The female Nike Golf president stated, two or three times, innovation was what brought athletes to Nike. Yeah, right. And people pick up found $10 bills to help combat litter.

Michael Jordon, who has meant more to Nike than any other athlete, was never mentioned. Odd in that, without Jordon, Nike would never have been able to execute their mission statement: Sell massively over-priced shoes to children living in poverty.

I got the impression there was more than a little intentional distancing of Rory from Tiger Woods. Rory seemed to go out of his way — and of course it was all scripted by Nike — to mention other Nike athletes. I wondered if Rory was going to mention Russell Henley before he did Woods.

I’m a fan of Manchester United, but, I have to admit I needed subtitles for Wayne Rooney’s remarks.

These gatherings of international golf reporters never fail to show how tepid and limp-wristed are our American bunch. European reporters ask real questions, and if they are not answered, point out that fact. Example: a guy asked Rory if he could, contractually, switch back to his Scotty Cameron putter if he wanted; Rory said he liked the Nike putter just fine; the reporter pointed out that was not the question he had asked. As well, the question to the Nike Golf president regarding Lance Armstrong and Tiger Woods’ fall into disgrace was one American reporters would never ask.

It seemed weird as hell to have a mosque towering in the distance as a giant hologram strutted around on stage, but I guess it wasn’t any weirder than Trinity Church looking down Wall Street in Lower Manhattan.

Rory seemed embarrassed by all the hoopla. Nike probably urged him to make his grand entrance — through the de rigueur (and asinine) American sports fog/smoke — in the style of an NFLer doing a sack dance. Rory, however, walked out with his standard, off-the-rack, regular-guy lope.

The commercial Nike premiered was just as hokey as you would expect. Nike, perhaps surprisingly, perhaps not, thrust Tiger Woods into a co-starring role. The punchline was Woods saying to Rory, “You’ll learn.” I thought the gag would have been more clever had there, at that point, been an insert of Dr. Anthony Galea winking. Especially in light of Major League Baseball’s recent decision to test for HGH, as well as the recent suspicions of Nike covering up for Lance Armstrong.

All in all, it was a fairly amusing event, even if the holograms were more than a little creepy. Rather than the mosque looming in the distance, Dr. Frankenstein’s castle would have seemed more fitting.

Now, what does all of this mean to golf fans? This: American golf journalists, to the man, will stop producing ten vapid “Tiger’s swing change” pieces a week and instead produce ten “Rory’s gear change” pieces a week. Equally vapid, you can be sure. (Admit it, after reading this, you can already hear Chamblee prattling on and on [and on and on] about Rory’s new equipment.)

[I must add one last point, lest you later accuse me of being daft. Chamblee, nor anyone else, can actually say anything of substance about Rory's equipment change. Why not? Because they can't risk alienating Nike or Titleist, both being too critical to advertising dollar inflow. Sean Foley doesn't buy tens or hundreds of million dollars worth of advertising, so he can be bashed endlessly. You have heard me say it many times before: there is zero separation of church and state in the American golf media.]

Irishgolf3 : Tour news~ ’Miguel Angel Jimenez makes history’- (then breaks a leg..)

Miguel Angel Jimenez, a fan favourite on the European Tour has gone on to make history earlier this month after shooting a final round 65, which led him to capture the UBS Hong Kong Open. History wasn’t made because he had won the event twice previously, it was the fact he has broken the age record, winning his 19th European tour title at the age of 48.

When asked what his secrets were to his late career success (given that he has secured 12 of his 19 European Tour wins post turning 40) Miguel responded with his favoured cigar in hand: ‘The most important thin, I do what I like to do in my life, golf has given me this pleasure.’ His much-loved personality came out as he followed on by saying: ‘This is maybe the olive oil in my joints….and the nice Rioja wine!’

Go on Miguel, ‘Break a leg’… – Miguel unfortunately took some time off over the Christmas period to go skiing which resulted in the injury. The accident happened in the Sierra Nevada mountains near his home in Spain. ”It will take three, four or five months to recover and be able to return to competition. I was playing very well but these things happen in life.”

Irishgolf3: Twitter trends~ Here at Irishgolf3 we’ve been watching a couple of cheeky Tweets sent to and from young McIlroy to particular American player’s over the past number of weeks. American PGA tour player Keegan Bradley had tweeted about his excitement after hearing reports that the legendary Tom Watson may captain his US Ryder Cup team in 2014. Keegan tweeted “All this Ryder Cup talk is getting me excited. Can we play now??!!!! #2moreyears”

The cocky Northern Irishman McIlroy tweeted back:

“You wanna get beaten again already!?”

Irishgolf3: Equipment: Already, 2013 looks to be an exciting year with the launch of many new innovative clubs from the top manufacturers. Here at Irishgolf3 we will have reviews as soon as the clubs are released into the Irish market.

We are particularly looking forward to testing the Taylormade ‘R1′ driver and the ‘RocketBallz Stage 2′ driver and fairway woods. Taylormade are promising another ten yards in distance for the average golfer with the new Rocketballz clubs and thats on top of their current ‘long hitting range’ of clubs on the market.

Nike currently are looking to increase their market share this year after investing heavily in R & D. The company believes they have the ability to produce innovative products that customers are demanding these days, a club that will provide extra distance, forgiveness and adjustment technology. Taylormade-adidas have been the market leader in terms of their worldwide sales but also the leading manufacturer on the innovation side. In terms of marketing for golf, no-one beats them.

For example, they target customers by email at just the right point, before a Major tournament or on a Monday morning after a tour player that has used Taylormade clubs; has won the night before. Taylormade’s CEO Mark King explains Taylormades’ position in the market is due to “The products are great and the validation of that is so many touring professional around the world are using our products.” I wonder is that the full truth or have they simply acted as a monopoly as they supplied what the customer’s were actually looking for.

Until next time,

Yours in golf,

Killian

Excerpt:

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates –  Jumeirah Group has announced that it is not renewing its five-year sponsorship deal with top-ranked Rory McIlroy amid expectations that the Northern Ireland golf star will sign with Nike next week. The global luxury hotel company based in the United Arab Emirates signed a five-year deal with McIlroy when he was 18 and was one of his first corporate sponsors. The announcement allows McIlroy to pursue a lucrative endorsement contract, with strong indications that he will sign with Nike in a deal that one industry observer estimated at $20 million a year. That would give Nike golf’s two biggest stars in McIlroy and Tiger Woods, who has been with the swoosh since he turned pro in 1996.

Would he ever skip a major? Photo via munnybear/Flickr Creative Commons.

Six months on from the halcyon days of summer 2012, Britain’s blissful reverie of a special Olympic games, our finest summer of sport, remains strong.

Team GB’s success was such that now we consider ourselves an elite sporting nation. Britain’s grandiose nature made tangible in the form of 29 gold medals, a tally bettered only by China and the United States.

It is inevitable that following such achievement there should be calls for more sports to be added to the Olympics, especially those we already excel at. Darts is a prime example, but Phil Taylor’s recent support for its inclusion — fuelled by Sir Clive Woodward’s emphatic ‘darts is definitely an Olympic sport’ comment — should take heed of the furore surrounding golf’s contentious place in the 2016 games.

Golf does not face serious doubts about its image in the same way darts does, but the importance of a gold medal in comparison to a major, or a PDC World Championship, is a perplexing issue applicable to both.

The difference between the Olympics and golf is that one is about preparation and sacrifice for that one chance every four years, the other for that one chance for four weeks of every year.

Tom Watson stated that competing for a gold medal would ‘dilute’ the importance of golf’s four major championships — the benchmark against which golfers are eternally judged. Watson’s point is an important one, but needs to be inverted to judge the crux of the golf-Olympics complex.

The problem is not that Olympic gold will become too important; it is that it will fail to be important enough.

Already Rory McIlroy has hinted that the question over whom he should represent — Ireland or Great Britain — is not worth a gold medal. In a new BBC documentary he made clear that foregoing the games altogether was one of three options he is ‘considering very carefully.’ The Olympics’ credentials would be hurt immeasurably if the game’s best chose not to play.

McIlroy is so unsure about committing to Rio in 2016 because golf, as it is now, provides safety for him, a sanctuary away from the trouble that has afflicted his homeland for many years. In the Walker Cup he played for Great Britain and Ireland; in the Ryder Cup he is European; in everything else he is Rory McIlroy. Playing in the Olympics threatens to embroil McIlroy in something he has thus far escaped.

On a more basic level, the format of play suggested for 2016 is in stark need of revision. As it stands, the medals would be contested between 60 men and 60 women — in separate events — over 72 holes of strokeplay golf. The top-15 in the men’s world ranking would be automatically entered, as would the top-15 in the women’s. However, no country can have more than four players if among the top-15 and, after the automatic berth cut-off, countries can be represented by no more than two of their highest-ranked players if not already qualified.

The criteria for entry appears adequate but if the games wishes to differentiate itself from the majors then a matchplay format should be adopted whereby countries pair-off against each other. Not only does a 72-hole strokeplay event hold the threat of becoming a boring affair in which the final round — supposedly the climactic finale brimming with suspense and excitement — becomes a victory procession for that week’s best golfer, it also introduces the chance of a medal being undermined.

It is highly improbable, but say a male golfer from Russia — a country it is thought will benefit from golf’s exposure as part of the Olympics — wins gold. Now, as far as I know, no Russian has ever competed on the PGA Tour, let alone held a card. Yet, by beating a world class field, on ‘the grandest stage of them all,’ he would be no closer to capturing the most lucrative playing rights in golf.

Somehow, I don’t think a gold medal would be much consolation for missing out on the millions on offer on the PGA and European Tours.

The notion of darts being in the 2020 Olympics is a dreamy, if surreal one. But before its proponents go headlong into its promotion, they should take a closer look at the tumultuous nature of golf’s inclusion.

As we look forward to another great season from golf’s young superstar Rory Mcilroy things are not as calm and collected behind the scenes as they appear on the course with Rory and Co. With big rumours circulating that Rory would sign a 200 million plus deal with sports giants Nike, it would appear some of his previous sponsors are slightly unhappy to say the least. None more so that sunglass giants Oakley whom Rory has been a great ambassador for over the past few seasons! They are claiming that Mcilroy has breached his contract in the terms of that if he was to sign a new deal they would be offered first refusal. However some late night emails between Mcilroys manager Conor Ridge at Dublin based Horizon and an Oakley executive would appear that Oakley said ‘we are out of the mix, no contract for 2013′. Despite having already spent over 300,000 on an advertising campaign with Mcilroy as the star attraction again for the 2013 spring collection! That would seem to say they couldn’t compete with Nikes offer. Yet, that’s not all, more mails between Horizon and Oakley are said to have been exchanged, including those outlying Nikes proposed offer. This it appears is what Oakley are using for a defence, that this re-started ‘negotiations’. In my opinion bollix it did! Oakley would have needed to team up with an equipment manufacturer to keep Rory on for another season or two. With titliest pulling out from backing Mcilroy in October past. It seems to me that Oakley are looking for a small payday from this with hopes of an out of court settlement! One thing can be for sure any money that is exchanged will not be from Rory’s pocket. I think the question that will be on everyone’s lips when we first see Rory in action in 2013 will be ‘how are the new clubs going?’ This silly matter from Oakley will be long forgotten about. I guess another question that you may as yourself now is, is this the right move for him? 200million says it is…

Tiger Woods and Rory Mcilroy are both rivals and friends, until one has the upper hand on a PGA match, then its game time. Rory and Tiger have lunch together and even sometimes play a friendly game of match play as well, but people wonder if it is a true relationship, or a strategy to peal away one another’s focus on a very important opponent. This year Tiger and Rory where both candles in a field of darkness. They lighted the way in the standings and Rory grabbed the number one spot in the world a while back at the Honda Classic. Rory still holds onto the lead, but Tiger is not far behind. Rory also has one more arrow in Tigers heart, the Ryder Cup. Tiger had a chance to tie the europeans with a short put, but lipped out and shut down with disbelief. Although this upset Tiger and the rest of the American team, he has yet to back down to Rory’s intimidation. Tiger has gone on to win Jack Nicholas’s Memorial tournament and two other big wins. Rory has won 4 tournaments this year, and stands at the highest on the money list. Tiger and Rory have more single wins this year than any other PGA tour player and they havent stopped yet. Its safe to say that Tiger and Rory are The Two Giants that walk golfs fairways and greens without looking at a single hazard.

Next weekend sees the climax of the British sporting year, as the best of the best compete to be crowned the BBC Sports Personality of the Year. It’s always hard to predict, and later even harder to justify, how the public vote but I wanted to pay my own personal tribute to the 12 on the list and offer some words of recognition to a few who amazingly missed out on the shortlist when any other year they would have probably been crowned the winner.

Nicola Adams created Olympic history by becoming the first ever woman to claim a gold medal in the Olympic boxing ring and what an amiable character she appears to be. Always smiling and joking out of the ring, her persona obviously changes when she steps inside it. If women’s boxing needed a poster girl, this Leeds lass ticks all the required boxes. She will inspire many other girls to put on a pair of gloves, but I would think that the sport does not yet possess the wider appeal to make her a candidate for this award.

Ben Ainslie has been at the very top of his sport for twelve years. He has delivered gold medals in every Olympic Games there has been in the 21st Century. No mean achievement, he is out there on the water on his own and every time has found the inner strength to find a way to beat his opponents. His mean streak came to the fore going into the last day of his race this year after his opponents had made him angry. Big mistake. There’s certainly a case to describe Ainslie as Britian’s greatest ever Olympian but, as with Adams, his sport is not mainstream enough even in an Olympic year to win a public vote.

Jessica Ennis is the darling of British athletics. She’s the girl with the pretty face and adorable personality who just happens to possess tons of Sheffield steel in her track-and-field persona, which meant that she was always likely to succeed in 2012. Doubtless she would have won Gold in Beijing four years earlier but for a cruel injury. But the expectations were massive on Ennis’ shoulders; more pressure was put on her than any other British athlete in the London Games. She triumphed and we all shared in her success. She has an outside chance of winning this award but there are greater champions this year.

Mo Farah became the first British athlete to win the 5,000m-10,000m Olympic double, in the same year that he became the first man in history to defend a European 5,000 metres crown. All this whilst his heavily-pregnant-with-twins wife watched on nervously. The Somalian-born immigrant made the Olympic stadium his own by winning Gold medals on consecutive Saturday nights and is a triumph for multi-cultural Britain. For these reasons, I think he will come out on top of the public vote. The personal sacrifices he has made with his career are all worth it now as he stands as one of the finest athletes in the world today.

Katherine Grainger. Pleased with rowing silver in Sydney. Less so with silver in Athens. Absolutely crestfallen with silver in Beijing, after which she considered giving up for good. Then along came Anna Watkins to create a perfect pairing ahead of the London Games. They went out hard, they went out strong and won by an absolutely huge distance. The tears were real alright, personal redemption. A message to all kids worldwide not to give up on your dream. It ranks as great an achievement as there has been in British rowing history and for a nation which produced Steve Redgrave and Matthew Pinsent, that is praise indeed. She has a shot at a top 3 placing here but produced my personal moment of the Games, one which will always ranks as one of my favourite sporting moments.

Sir Chris Hoy is like Fedex when it comes to the Greatest Show on Earth; he always delivers. He secured two more Olympic titles this summer to reach six in total. And yet, he is not expected to feature amongst the top 3 next week. Why? Simply put, he is a victim of his own successes and expectations in the eyes of the public. We expect him to deliver and he does so, so we almost think it’s too easy. It is far from so. But he has won this award in the past and does not need it to add anything to his career. His perfect swansong will hopefully come in his home Commonwealth Games in 2014.

Rory McIlroy has had another superb year in his sport and is worthy of his spot on the shortlist, the only competitor who didn’t step foot in London this summer. He added another major to his maiden one from last year and has had spells as the world number one. At his age, he could well go on to dominate the sport and win close to ten majors. There I will stop, as I haven’t got a clue about golf!

Andy Murray would be a shoe-in for this award in any other year. He ended Britain’s 76-year wait for a Grand Slam champion, to add to the Olympic Gold and Silver medals he won five weeks earlier. In doing so, he defeated two of the greatest players to have ever played tennis in the finals. His will-to-win has shone through this year, but his lack of popularity when compared to the others on the shortlist will still count against him. Top 3 is an outside bet.

Ellie Simmonds is still a teenager and has four Paralympic swimming titles to her CV. Not bad, not bad at all. She is probably the face of the British Paralympic team and delivered again, just as she did in Beijing as a 14-year-old. Her two gold medals this summer were accompanied by a silver and a bronze, meaning she will have to pay hefty luggage fees if she plans on travelling with budget airlines anytime in the future.

Sarah Storey now has 22 Paralympic medals across two sports, swimming and cycling. An incredible achievement. Four Gold medals this summer puts her at the very top of the deserving list. She has 11 Gold medals in her Paralympic career and the recognition that being on this shortlist brings will possibly mean just as much to her as any of those individual titles. In my reckoning, she would be top three but I think she may fall short. For me, her career matches anything anybody else has ever achieved in sport.

David Weir added four Paralympic titles to the sixth London marathon he won earlier this year and received as much fervent home support as any British sport star. The Weirwolf masks went down a storm and, along with the successes of stars like Storey and Simmonds, Weir’s achievement helped the Paralympics reach almost- parity with the Olympics in terms of media exposure and recognition. This is the greatest success for those three this year. Simmonds has the best chance of getting on the SPOTY podium but, whatever happens, there are three Paralympians on the shortlist, unimaginable in the past.

Bradley Wiggins is the apparent no-brainer for victory in this contest. He was the first British man to win the Tour de France and followed it up with yet another Olympic Gold medal a few weeks later. Sporting immortality. His feet appear firmly on the pedals as he refuses to let celebrity take over his life. However, I think his dour personality may just count against him in this award, and maybe the public won’t want to see another cycling champion after Mark Cavendish in 2011.

So, if I am to predict the public vote I will go for Mo Farah-Bradley Wiggins-Ellie Simmonds. If I was to be given the sole responsibility of choosing the victor, I would go for Katherine Grainger-Mo Farah-Sarah Storey as my preferred trio. But I suppose every sport fan in Britain would choose a different three. What is for sure is that no other British sporting year has ever come close to matching this one. There are Olympic champions galore who have missed out on even being nominated. Every single name is deserving of being on the list. Spare a thought for the likes of Jade Jones (Britain’s first ever Olympic Taekwondo champion) , Victoria Pendleton who ended her stunning career with another Gold and silver medal to add to her haul, and double Olympic champion Laura Trott who claimed Gold in the most difficult cycling event, the Omnium. As well as those ladies, spare a thought for all of the athletes who gave their very best and achieved to the best of their ability this year. What is for certain is that all of these athletes put the Great in Great Britain and Northern Ireland this year. Let’s all celebrate them next Sunday and relive those great memories from Great Britain’s greatest sporting year one last time before it comes to an end.

If you didn’t see the culmination to the Race to Dubai this past week, you missed out. There were low scores a plenty, including a 10-under final round from Justin Rose, which looked to have the field beat, except for one man. Rory McIlroy saw Rose’s magnificent 62 as mere impetuous, finishing with five birdies to beat the Englishman by two shots. This world number one’s worthy, assassin like performance, led to obvious further comparisons with Tiger Woods, a man whose career was full of such finishes. These comparisons are here to stay too it would seem as Rory is set to sign a $200 million contract with Woods’ long-time sponsor Nike.

With McIlroy’s contract now finished with Titleist, a brand whose clubs he used to win two majors, both money titles and rise to the top of the golf world, he has said he will be throwing himself into new equipment testing. Rory’s move to Nike has drawn criticism from some big names in the game, one European star in particular, Nick Faldo. The Englishman, who also switched club manufactures during his career, has warned of the dangers such a move may pose. In particular, he sees the move as purely for financial gains and worries that this may harm McIlroy’s golf next season.

“The bottom line is he’s doing it for money,” Faldo said. “When he looks at a 20-year career it’s not necessary. If he carries on and wins more majors he’ll be worth hundreds of millions anyway. Sure this is a wonderful guarantee but Rory knows the biggest thing is winning golf tournaments. If he believes that’s still going to happen, fine. But if it holds him back for a split second in his mind then you will question it.”

Whilst Faldo would certainly know more about this area (and every area in golf) than I do, I am afraid I have to disagree. Firstly, if Rory wants to make the move for money, who can stand up and criticise that. He is only young, but Golf like any sport, can be a cruel mistress and thus, why not cash in whilst the money is there to be made. Before, I get any angry letters saying that Rory will be winning Majors for years to come, I totally agree. However, you never know with these things so if he wants to secure his future financially now, who can blame him. Secondly, whilst it may take awhile for him to get the right feel and flight that he is looking for with his new clubs, I do not think that a change in equipment will hold his game back in the long term.

No, I don’t think it is Rory fans that should be worried about this switch, but rather the other manufactures in the game. With McIlroy switching allegiances to Nike, beware everyone else. Nike will be all over the two most popular names in the game, and one that is likely to continue to be for many years to come. Moreover, even with Tiger it still seems as though Nike golf clubs are on the outside looking in with the average club golfer, but that would almost certainly change if the Golf’s newest golden boy starts using them to continue to win majors and money titles left right and centre.
