Yesterday we gave you the definitive list of the funniest comedians of the decade. Today, NPI continues its look at the comedy of the Aughts by looking at the ten funniest films of the decade. Evaluating comedies can be tricky. Is the sheer number of laughs more important than the overall quality of the movie? This list aims to balance those concerns: It is a list of the funniest films, and not the best comedies, but at the same time, the best comedy often comes out of a good story. So what is the funniest film of the Aughts? Well, here’s the list:

10. Meet the Parents (2000)

Time has been a little unkind to Meet the Parents. An unfortunate sequel, the overexposure of Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, and a rather disappointing decade from Robert De Niro all conspired to reflect poorly on this film. These considerations, however, are generally unfair; they ignore the fact that Meet the Parents was one of the Aughts’ first great comedies and that Stiller was one of the best comic actors of the first part of the decade. Meet the Parents showcased his ability to play the understated, slightly belligerent everyman that he would later tone down to a bland, traditional romantic comedy lead. This, combined with De Niro’s excellent and persistent deadpan, led to some truly great comic scenes, like the discussion of “Puff the Magic Dragon” in the car and the lie-detector scene.

9. The Hangover (2009)

Before I saw this film this summer, a friend called to recommend it to me: “I don’t want to oversell certain parts…well, there’s pretty much no way I can oversell Zach Galifianakis’ performance.” And he was right. Even with all the hype Galifianakis was getting, his performance in The Hangover was still one of the most satisfying comedic performances of the decade. Galifianakis’ role was the standout, but the entire cast, including Ed Helms, Bradley Cooper, and Jeffrey Tambor, helped take a movie with a rather generic premise—a bachelor party gone awry—to new heights. Even a cameo from Mike Tyson was handled rather well (I’m on board with any excuse to include “In the Air Tonight” in a movie). Nevertheless, without Galifianakis—the one-man wolf pack—this movie wouldn’t have even sniffed the Top Ten.

8. A Mighty Wind (2003)

Christopher Guest movies are known for a consortium of characters who are completely unself-conscious and oblivious, but one character usually stands out. In Waiting for Guffman, it’s Corky; in Best in Show, it’s Fred Willard’s announcer. But it’s the dueling performances of Eugene Levy and Fred Willard in A Mighty Wind that set this one apart. Levy, as folk legend Mitch Cohen, is arguably the heart of the movie, but it’s Willard as Mike LaFontaine, the former star of “Wha’ Happened?”, who has the funniest lines. This, of course, shouldn’t minimize the contributions of Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer as The Folksmen, or John Micheal Higgins as the head of the New Main Street Singers. As usual in Guest’s films, the entire cast gets laughs, but none as much as Willard and Levy.<ins datetime="2009-12-14T02:20" cite="mailto:Tim%20Britton"> </ins>And of all the films on this list, A Might Wind has by far the best soundtrack: So it’s got that going for it, which is nice.

7. The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005)

6. Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)

5. Knocked Up (2007)

How you feel about comedies during the Aughts—or at least since 2005—comes down largely to how you answer the “Judd Apatow question.”* Judd Apatow films, and his style, have dominated the comedy landscape in the second half of the decade, so it’s hard to escape his influence. If you find the movies tiresome, redundant, one-dimensional, too long, or any other of the myriad complaints lodged against these films, then you’re probably not happy about this influence.

*It also, I guess, has a lot to do with how you answer the “Vince Vaughn question.” My answer to that question has always been, “No.”

I, for one, have no problem with Judd Apatows movies. In fact, I think they represent a breakthrough in romantic comedies, an otherwise stale genre. Apatow and his crew have such an ear for dialogue, and such a wry yet sympathetic take on relationships, that his films have an earnestness and realism that make the humor even more powerful. It also doesn’t hurt that his films star some of the funniest actors in the world, like Jason Segel, Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, and Steve Carell.

The order of these three films is inevitably going to be somewhat arbitrary; I love all three and have seen each of them dozens of times. If you reversed the order, or changed it any way, I probably couldn’t object much.

If I had to pick a favorite of these three, I’d probably go with Knocked Up, thanks largely to Rudd’s performance as Pete. It also showcases Rogen at his best and the most fully<ins datetime="2009-12-14T02:22" cite="mailto:Tim%20Britton"> </ins>depicted relationship of any of the films. Scenes like the pregnant-sex scene—“I do not want you to fuck me like a dog!” “It’s doggie STYLE. It’s just a style….We don’t have to go outside or anything”—, their fight scene—“Fuck you, hormones. You are a crazy bitch, hormones”—,and the dinner scene—“I’m pregnant.” “With….emotion?”— are especially funny because they feel so realistic.

Having Said That, Forgetting Sarah Marshall and The 40-Year-Old-Virgin are classics in their own right. Forgetting (which isn’t directed by Apatow, but was produced by him and featured many Apatow<ins datetime="2009-12-14T02:24" cite="mailto:Tim%20Britton"> </ins>actors) finally gave Jason Segel, maybe the funniest leading man of all these films, an opportunity to shine; as I’ve said, I’d listen to Segel sing in any movie. Russell Brand, Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, and Jonah Hill also don’t hurt.

And The 40-Year-Old-Virgin features the guileless Steve Carell—“You know how when you grab a woman’s breast and it feels like a bag of sand?”—and great scenes like the “You know how I know you’re gay?” exchange and David’s attempt to bring Andy his porn collection: “Here it is: Boner Jams ’03. It’s a mixtape I made of some scenes I was really into in the summer of 2003.”

4. Wet Hot American Summer (2001)

This cult classic doesn’t need realism—it’s just a continuous string of absurdity and satire. The ensemble cast, made up largely of alums from MTV’s The State (the film was also directed by The State alum David Wain), manages to turn the ridiculous farce of a story into one of the funniest films of the decade. Working with such tropes as high-speed chases, natural disasters, and children in peril, as well as broad genres like underdog sports movies, teen romance/romantic comedy, and summer camp movies, Wet Hot American Summer undermines practically every cinematic conceit. There’s Coop’s speech before the “culminating climactic softball game against evil Camp Tiger Claw” in which he tells his team of his plan to “try to come from behind at the last minute with some weird, trick play that we made up,” and the team responds that “it sounds like pretty well-worn territory” and that “the whole thing feels kind of trite.” The overall silliness is sold by a great cast of comic actors who would go on to big things in the Aughts: Paul Rudd, Michael Showalter, Amy Poehler, Bradley Cooper, and A.D. Miles.

3. Anchorman (2004)

Wow, we managed to make it through 70% of this list without a single Will Ferrell movie. Ferrell certainly passes Apatow and Vince Vaughn as the most polarizing comic figure of the decade: Some people think he’s a glorified buffoon who plays the same kind of idiot in every movie, while others think he’s an extremely funny buffoon who plays the same kind of idiot in every movie. It’s true that Ferrell has made a career out of repeating the same shtick, but this is largely because he has, with pretty much every movie since, tried to duplicate the success of Anchorman. Ferrell’s brand of arrogant, unrestrained fool was never more hilariously embodied than it was in Ron Burgundy. I don’t know how to put this, but he’s kind of a big deal. Anchorman also features a stellar supporting cast, with Paul Rudd as Brian Fantana (“60% of the time, it works every time.”), Steve Carell as Brick Tamland (“I love lamp!”), David Koechner as Champ Kind (“I miss you so damn much. I miss being with you; I miss being near you. I miss your laugh. I miss your scent; I miss your musk.”), and Fred Willard as Ed Harken (“I have no idea where he would have gotten a hold of German pornography.”). Really, though, it’s thanks to Ferrell’s skill with improvisation, and his ability to bring lines like, “Milk was a BAD choice!” and “They named it San Diego, which of course in German means ‘a whale’s vagina’” into the public consciousness, that makes this movie so great.

2. Zoolander (2001)

The similarities between Anchorman and Zoolander are obvious: They are both movies about incredibly successful and confident, yet incredibly stupid, people. They both feature a rich cast of comic actors—Will Ferrell’s role as Jacobim Mugatu may be even more inspired than his portrayal of Ron Burgundy. And they each left an indelible on the culture in the form of absurd lines that can be quoted at pretty much any time for a cheap laugh: “A ‘eugoogolizer’: One who speaks at funerals. Or did you think I’d be to stupid to know what a ‘eugoogoly’ was?” “Sting would be another hero of mine. The music he’s created over the years…I don’t really listen to it, but the fact that he’s making it. I respect that.” “I’m pretty sure there’s more to life than being really, really, ridiculously good looking.” Zoolander, however, gets the #2 spot because it was probably slightly funnier overall, and it had a more compelling plot. Plot may seem almost irrelevant to movies like this, but Zoolander’s somewhat absurd assassination plot manages to include a Derek Zoolander trip to coal country, a secret graveyard meeting with David Duchovny, and the great brainwashing scene.

1. Superbad (2007)

The last three movies on this list may indicate that I prefer absurd humor to realistic humor, but this is not the case; both styles have their appeal, and a comedy’s quality is more dependant on how well it operates within its own version of reality. Superbad, the funniest movie of the Aughts, is almost disturbingly realistic in its depiction of high school life and language. The characters of Seth and Evan, and the friendship between the two of them, are deep and compelling, lending a strain of pathos to the humor—a strain both leads, particularly Michael Cera, exploit well. Cera, who has been caught in a Will Ferrell-like dilemma of his own in his attempt to capture George Michael Bluth in every movie, has probably never given a funnier performance than he gives as Evan. During a scene early in the movie, when Seth gets spit on by the mullet-wearing bully, Cera lingers in the background, bobbing his head; even as a blur lurking in the background, though, Cera manages to steal the scene. For his part, though, Jonah Hill as Seth gives what would be the breakout performance of almost any other comedy. While he lacks Cera’s subtlety, Hill probably gets the more outright hysterical lines: “Look at Jules’ dating record: […] Jason Stone who looks like fucking Zack Morris, and Matt Mayer. Matt Mayer: He’s the sweetest guy ever. Have you ever stared into his eyes? It was like the first time I heard The Beatles.” And none of this even includes Christopher Mintz-Plaatz’s breakthrough as McLovin, or Seth Rogen and Bill Hader as the cops; you’d have a pretty difficult time coming up with a better secondary story in a comedy. It’s Cera and Hill, though, and their ability to seem like plausible high school students and best friends, that manage to turn Superbad into the funniest film of the decade.

Thanks to my friends, Justin & Tianna, we were invited to an amazing Halloween party at the home of Carrie and her supercool husband, Jay.

Theirs is a mid-century modern home in north central Phoenix and it was so incredible. Tons of vintage furniture and great decorating thanks to Carrie’s creative eye!

Here are some highlights from the night, Speed Racer and his main squeeze, Trixie…

No introductions needed for this one…

I’m calling this the Bekah and Steve collage!

Charlotte and Bob Harris came all the way from Japan for the occasion

& the out-of-this-world music was supplied by Mix Master Astronaut

And finally some extras of the gorgeous mirrorball and some supercutie dolls that I desperately wanted to take home.

Hello, everybody! Before I get into my review of the movie Year One, I just want to let you know wh

Hello, everybody! Before I get into my review of the movie Year One, I just want to let you know where I’ve been for the last couple months. I found my way into the World of Warcraft and have been battling the forces of the Scourge and the Bich King to save Azeroth. I’ve managed to get my main character, a Night Elf Druid named Nagaira to level 59 and my Death Knight named DameNagaira to level 62, but I’ve gotten a bit burned out on it… Azeroth will have to find another hero to save them for a while… lol. Mags has even gotten into it, but she plays like a girl. Her idea of playing WoW is to ride boats, trams and flights and to camp out in the inns. She cries about having to kill the tigers, lions, wolves, killer bunnies… and she doesn’t like to read the quest info, so basically, she never levels and everything can kill her. So, I made a Death Knight for her that we can share. I’ll level her, and she can run around where she wants without worry of death and resurrection… and finding her body, which can be a long, painstaking process because she likes to jump off cliffs, boats and buildings I couldn’t figure out how to res with the spirit healer until a couple weeks ago.

But… I’m back to reading and trying to make up for lost time. I’ve finished 3 books and am almost done with two more while away. I’ll get the reviews written up for them soon.

So, now for Year One…

Year One is the result of a question posed by writer and director Harold Ramis: How would a person with modern-day sensibilities and consciousness get along in a biblical-times society? Particularly with the post-Christianity questioning and shifting ethics that is prevalent in many urbanites today. The resulting cultural shock of the “enlightened chosen one,” Zed (played by Jack Black), and his side-kick friend, Oh (played by Michael Cera), as they find themselves thrust out of their caveman-village after Zed eats the forbidden fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil is hilarious. In the span of 30 minutes or so, Zed and Oh witness the first fratricide when the meet Cain and Abel returning from their sacrifice, meet Lillith, the first lesbian, get sold into slavery, happen upon Abraham (played by Hank Azaria) as he’s about to sacrifice Isaac, get circumcised, travel to Sodom, join the city’s guard… only to end up as slaves, again. Yet through it all, Zed continues to insist he’s been chosen by God or “the gods” (he’s not sure which, just sure He or they aren’t female,) and Oh rolls his eyes and plays ”Sancho Panza” to Zed’s “Don Quixote.”

This movie has a good mix of a fabulous cast who have great chemistry together, irreverent and iconoclastic humor, smart writing and pop-culture references (at one point, Oh chants, “Yes, we can!” and I nearly fell off my chair with laughter.)

There were several surprises when I watched the behind-the-scenes segment on the DVD. I was shocked when I found out that Oliver Platt had played the effeminent, pedophiliac high priest. I never even recognized him! I also hadn’t recognized Harold Ramis in the role of Adam, nor had I realized Isaac was played by the same actor who played McLovin (Christopher Mintz-Plasse). In Year One, Mintz-Plasse has long head-banger-like hair and is sans glasses, and Isaac, his character, is a kinda Heeb-wigger gangsta-wannabe (“I can see why his dad wanted to kill him,” Zed says at one point.) Also a cast surprise was David Cross as Cain. The whole time I watched the movie I kept trying to place the actor, and was convinced he was one of the Geico Cavemen, only to find out he played the only part of the Chipmunk movie I liked: Uncle Ian. I am still not completely convinced he didn’t play a Caveman.

One of my FAVORITE parts of Year One wasn’t even in the movie. In the special features section of the DVD is a fantastic little 2 minute video called “Leeroy Jenkins: The Gates of Sodom.” It’s a Year One’s take on the now immortalized WoW raid. They even address the two raging factions (seriously, there ARE people bitter and angry at each other over this!): At the end of the clip, did Leeroy Jenkins huff “At least I AIN’T chicken” or did he brag ”At least I HAVE chicken?” (Of course Isaac plays Leeroy… he did a Leeroy move in the movie, too, that got Zed and Oh in trouble while he ran off yelling, “Peace out, SUCKAS!”)

Things I could’ve lived without… they do go a bit far with the poop and pee jokes, but those are the same scenes that my 15 and 17 year olds repeat again and again… and again. Also, there are sexual references and innuendos throughout the movie (they spend half of it in Sodom, you know, so you might find yourself barraged with uncomfortable questions by younger children… “Why is that girl eating a banana like that? Why does that boy like watching her? What does she mean, she likes to have sex with girls? What is sodomy and why is it the best thing?”) and, at one point, Cain cajoles Oh’s desire to save himself for the girl he loves by saying, “What transpires within the confines of the walls of Sodom, stays within the confines of the walls of Sodom.”

Oh, a little funny side thought here… Michael Cera played Paulie Bleeker, the hapless, accidental father-to-be to Ellen Page’s Juno in the award-winning 2007 film Juno, and in Year One, his character Oh’s love interest, Eema, is played by British actress Juno Temple. Just thought that was neat.

When I was growing up there was always two things that I was scared of….

1. Drive- By

Yup, where I grew up…there was always some dusty niggaz in blue aka Crips that would roam around the hood..trying to peep who they could use as target practice….Very fun game until you realized that there was no reset button in those games and watching your friends get their clothes cut off wasnt the ideal convo that you would like to have with your parents at supper. ( Dont act like you dont know nothing about “supper”)

2. Sex

Yeah..despite what “real” niggaz will say..I was scared of sex…Now I was down for sucking some breast meat until it was dry but when it came to exchanging bodily fluids..Nigga I waassssss scared…WHY? One was because Momma Fresh always told me that Hell is the place that I would reside if I was to leave my lil dancing Seans on womens forehead…The other reason was simply bc I was scared to throw some D’s on that hoe…You see, womens in the hood was busting it wide open like some straight pros when I was younger and I wasnt even on the practice squad!…Now one thing about living in the hood, is that everyone knew your business and I was afraid that my business pertaining to my slab wasnt up to par. Let me explain… When I was little (not pun intended) I accidentally saw a porn and I was like…ummmmmm….I think I want to marry her! I got like 12 more inches that Imma need to find before I can stand in the kitchen and slice a gal up in the living room…BUT…as I got older..I realized that them niggaz are professional slab throwers..Kinda like when I watched MJ crack niggaz forehead in the NBA…then I would go to the park and try and do the same moves…FAIL…Not in my league…But although I wasnt in MJ’s league..In the league I was playing I was killing em…Yes indeed but I didnt learn that until the game was dang near over for a G..SMH…(If there wasnt a hell, AIDS and child support…I can think of…ummmm… 74.5 gals that I should have let dance with my lil Seans) But once I became a member of B.I.W.O.W.I.S.B.I.B (short for Bust It Wide Open When I Say Bring It Back)….I did learn something. SEX IS OVERRATED…Now I know some of yall life time bust-it-wide opens member/ Nicki Manji fans are thinking…Naw you just aint sliced up the right one…ummmm…WRONG! On the real, Sex is overrated because niggaz act like within those moments of window to the wall action… that the location of Bin Laden, the date and time of Jesus’ return and the cure for AIDS is revealled…When really the only thing that happens after sex is hunger.

BUUTTTT when I think about it I would rather have everything that I do to be like sex…Yup..Overrated…( I had a nasty joke but Im trying to reduce the list of things that Jesus is going to question me about when we meet) You see in order to be overrated that means that one must at least be appreciated and successful…No one says that the new Kia or the Detroit Lions are overrated..Naw instead niggaz hate on the great things like the Los Angeles Lakers (we gone repeat, old hoe face nicca) and the chick in the club that you said was ugly but only after she rejected your wack approach….But for everything that is overrated there are some great things that are underrated…And as you already know I have peeped a few examples in the music industry….So since I cant think of a dope transition to get to the meat of this blog lets gone and look at the most recent underrated R&B artist/albums that I feel like niggaz have slept on… (talking to much about sex..now a nigga cant think straight..shame..shame)

1. Pleasure P

Now I remember with Pleasure P first left the new B2KPretty Ricky..I was thinking that was the biggest mistake that he could have made because they had the “almost about to reach puberty” demographic on lock but since Spect decided to do the gay, “Superman” videos…ummm…Maybe he was smarter than what I gave em credit…But although most arent giving him credit(based on his album sales).. for his debut album, The Introduction of Marcus Cooper I must say that despite his first single, “Did You Wrong” sounding like a song that was left off any “Greatest Hits of the 90s” cd…His album was cold..really cold…

2. Sammie

I was talking to one the homies and he was trying to see who would be a dope R&B artist to bring down for an event in his city and he didnt want to spend too much $$$..I told him that Sammie was extra cold and that he had one of the coldest R&B albums that I have heard..All that nigga could think of was lil musty Sammie from back in the day..Until I sent this jam…

3. Tank

Him and Piph work out together…

Now this is one that I dont get..This nigga is the COLDEST singer in R&B and his last album Sex, Love and Pain is what made me starting blogging and wanting to stop singing but Im too cold for that.. is one the best R&B album made, ever…. But yet and still some folks have no clue who he is… After hearing this joint..You will be sure to buy all of his albums…Maybe then that nigga will stop yelling so hard on his album covers…

Now that I have listened to all these “Girl Can you please leave your drawls at home” songs…Imma go and text my baby girl and see if she would like to be an exclusive member of the B.I.W.O.W.I.S.B.I.B…Now, how is that for a dope transition? YES! -Fresh

That’s it, seus sujos. Não conto mais nada porque o filme é muito bom e não quero estragar a surpresa. Assistam. Adeus.

“Best show on TV this year?” you ask.

Oh, that’s easy.

I could also have said the campest. If anyone thought Fox had blown the gay meter with Adam Lambert on American Idol last season, then they need to watch Glee. Compared to this, Lambert is Hulk Hogan in thigh-length boots.

Up until now my favorite show was Better Off Ted. And that’s still an amazing sitcom. But I LOVE Glee, and it’s not often you’ll hear me say that about a scripted show. I love it to bits and shreds and I want to have its children. Seriously. My uterus belongs to Fox. In terms of originality, wit, infectiousness, excitement, fearlessness, funny lines per episode, and the sheer genius of the idea, there is nothing – nothin‘, I tells ya – to beat Glee.

The basics: bunch of hormone-raged misfit high schoolers try to find their identity by performing in a glee club, coached by a visionary teacher who’s also busy fending off the various forces of evil trying to shut the club down. That’s the nutshell version. But it’s so much more. Funny, involving, surprising, bitchy, sexy. There’s something for everyone. Black diva, hunky jock, acid-tongued queen….and I ask you, how many dance troupes feature McLovin’ in a wheelchair? It reminds me of the first season of Desperate Housewives before it grew old and tired.

I love that some TV executive at Fox had the balls to greenlight this. Whoever that is, I want to find him and kiss him thank-you. (So he might want to leave town now. I’m just saying.) Suddenly, maybe television isn’t doomed after all.

Watch this show, I implore you, or miss out on a major cultural experience that’s about to sweep the world. One of so many. First Barack Obama, then Adam Lambert and Better Off Ted, now Glee. America – you’re back.

Glee gets FIVE magic carpets out of Five.

TV Swami – he says YES to original TV programming finally.

This is a funny, brutal-truth comedy of character James Brennan (The Village, The Squid & The Whale, The Education Of Charlie Bank’s Jesse Eisenberg) who seeks a boring summer job after graduation in the year of 1987 as he tries to fund his college journalistic dream.

He meets the divine Em (Twilight’s Kristen Stewart), a care-free teenager who plays the perfect love interest in this quirky tale of young romance that is full of realism and honesty.

The film is peppered with familiar faces of the American Teen Comedy bracket with Ryan Reynolds and Bill Haden, Seth Rogen’s Police partner in Superbad (also directed by the same director Gregg Mottola) who took McLovin out on the night of his life!

It’s a lovely, romantic and absolutely hilarious movie of embarassing parents, childish bullies and the overwhelming hormonal changes that happen in the summer of our youth. This is better than American Pie where the crudity makes it more silly, whereas this has a higher sense of actual truth.

The soundtrack adds to the emotional depth of the film as well. I couldn’t help noticing the apt moment where Rainbow’s Here I Go Again is being played on the car radio in a “sad” scene.

Sweet, endearing and a really nice film for a cosy night for all child-like adults and mature kids alike.

I’d heard Role Models was a great film and having seen the trailer I definitely wanted to see

I’d heard Role Models was a great film and having seen the trailer I definitely wanted to see it but never found the time to get to the cinema to check it out.

So I finally got round to seeing it on DVD and what a treat it was!

Two energy drink salesmen, Danny (the ever awesome Paul Rudd) and Wheeler (Seann William Scott), end up having to do community service after Danny crashes their work truck during a minor breakdown – triggered by his girlfriend Beth (Elizabeth Banks) leaving him.

Rather than going to jail Danny and Wheeler take community service and end up at a programme called Sturdy Wings where they will take on the role of big brothers to the children there, who all seem to have social problems.

Wheeler ends up with Ronnie (Bobb’e J. Thompson) a little 10 year old kid who is a foul mouthed know-it-all and Danny lands Augie (Christopher Mintz-Plasse, better known to the world as McLovin), a nerdy teen who is into live role playing games.

Role Models is a crude and very rude film – don’t watch this if you’re easily shocked – but it’s not done just for the sake of it. The characters are surprisingly well rounded for this type of comedy and the chemistry between not only the four leads but between Rudd and Banks really does its job.

I haven’t laughed this much at a film since Superbad and there are too many moments to go into detail.

As the relationships grow between the older characters and the younger ones the film moves towards it’s inevitable conclusion. I saw it coming a mile off but what I didn’t realise was just how funny it would be.

As much as I enjoyed the ending, having watched the extended one on the DVD extras I kinda wish they had gone with that one as it sort of closed everything off a bit better.

Overall if you’re not easily offended and liked films such as Superbad and American Pie then you really need to see this film.

Rating: 9/10
