Broder James

A *long* time ago, Before Children Era, we discovered these Bay Area modern landmarks and others that are still on our wish list. Time flies, and the babies have grown up into little citizens and I think we’ll revive these itineraries into family friendly trips.

Some of these places are running out of time, and it’s great to have today’s kids experience the open space when dreaming of grandiose castles.

The Neutra House was designed in 1935 and completed in 1939 by internationally renowned architect Richard Neutra.
Its clean lines exemplify mid-century modernism and the internationally recognized California modern style. Neutra collaborated with architect Otto Winkler on a dozen residential projects/homes in the S.F. Bay Area in the 1930’s. Only two of these projects were south of Atherton, with both in Los Altos.
This house is one of the “Three Small Houses in an Orchard” as Neutra referred to his project.

Recently I have been working hard on my portfolio that I have to send off to FIT NYC within two weeks. In my opinion it has been coming out great, once I send it off and get it approved I’ll post pictures of a few sketches that I’ve been working on lately. And also the Winter apparel for “Abstract Ski Collection” is 90% finished. We’re just waiting on two more pieces to return from our manufacturers and we’ll start shipping off garments to retailers immediately. Well that’s about all I have to say for now, I’ll end this post off with this dope picture. That pic has given me massive amounts of inspiration throughout this design process for my portfolio.

Otherwise if you’re more of a pictures and video kind of guy, I took some snaps and also uploaded them to the site’s gallery.

Left 4 Dead 2, Borderlands, Scribblenauts, Bayonetta, Tekken 6 – there was pretty much a playable tech booth for every kind of gamer. I highly reccomend going to the event in May, as this convention only seems to be getting bigger and better. Rising Star Games product manager Yen Hau and Ubisoft script writer Kevin Shortt were kind enough to give me interviews, so expec a podcast with them sometime soon!

This past weekend was the 34th Annual Marine Corp Marathon.

I was ready, I trained somewhat meticulously for it, and awoke the morning of feeling refreshed and ready to run fast.

Based on my 1:04:14 finish at the Army 10 Miler 3 weeks prior, I decided to go out with the 3:10 pace group. I had my mind set on a Boston Qualifer, and was looking forward to achieving it.

I arrived at the start early enough to get a good spot in the 3:00-3:19 corral along side others who were going for that coveted 3:10 Boston qualifying time. I did some light jogging and stretching to prepare myself for the long journey ahead. After the gun went off, it took me a mere 20 seconds to get to the start line. Not bad for a race that had 30,000 registrants. Although the start was crowded, I did not feel like I was getting boxed and forced to compromise my pace.

Miles 1-3:
Felt great, I was right next to the 3:10 pacer, and we were spot on pace. I didn’t feel like I went out too fast, and felt pretty comfortable.

Miles 3-8:
Things didn’t really pick up, but stayed constant. Still feeling good, I couldn’t wait to cross that finish line with a 3:10, but told myself to hold back. “I could run like this forever,” I thought. It’s mile 22 where I would have my chance to pick up the pace if I felt good.

Miles 8-15:
Crossed the half way mark in 1:34:39. That’s a half marathon PR for me! I was feeling good about it, but had a feeling I would have to fight pretty hard for that 3:10, but still felt it was well within reach. At this point, I was already thinking about mile 20, and how it’s a 10k race from there to the finish.

Mile 15-17:
Things took a turn for the worse around here. My pace slowed, not sure why this happened all of a sudden. I still remained optimistic. If I slow down now, I can conserve some energy to chase down the 3:10 group when the time comes. However, with each passing step, I felt worse. My legs were feeling heavy. “What is this??!,” I thought. I downed another packet of Gu and a cup of water, and kept treading along. Another half mile went by, and my legs started to cramp. Oh man…

Mile 17-20:
I was forced to a slow jog. I even had to walk some. I stopped for a few seconds to stretch out, but thought I must keep moving forward to that finish line! At this time, I exhausted my last Gu packet, and was taking anything handed out on the course. Spectators were still as awesome as ever giving me hope that I would make it to the finish line.

Mile 20-24:
As I crossed the 20 mile marker, I did a quick calculation. In order to catch the 3:10 group, I would have to run a 40 minute 10k. I would be quite capable of that if that with fresh legs, but 20 miles with cramping have already taken their toll. There was no way I would be able to keep up anywhere near 6:30 pace. As I passed some spectators were handing out bananas, oranges, and licorice. I hastily ate them hoping they would help me salvage this race. No luck, my legs were shot. I started feeling a bit discouraged from all the walking I had to do, and even more so when the 3:20 pace group passed me, then the 3:30 pace group passed me. Well, maybe I can still get a PR out of this race, I thought.

Mile 24-26:
“Only 2 miles left to go!!,” a spectator shouts. So close yet so far especially when you are painfully walking/running.

Mile 26-26.2:
As soon as I saw the mile 26 marker, I remembered the warning I received about the brutal uphill finish. My quads were aching so bad, I couldn’t run straight, but had to run a little sideways. I probably looked ridiculous, but that didn’t matter. I saw the finish line ahead, and hobbled to it where I was greeted with relief and accomplishment. My time: 3:38:28, a super positive split, and not a PR. Although it was not the time I was hoping for, I still felt relieved to have finished, but not once did I ever think about giving up.

Post Race:

After the race, I went straight to get a free complementary massage. Great idea MCM organizers!

After the massage, I walked around the finish festival, and decided to head home. The Rossyln Metro was packed with everyone trying to get back. It must have taken at least 45 minutes for me to get to the escalator to go down to catch the train.

Reflection:

Well, I have been having a string of good races recently which I am thankful for. I am not too bummed I didn’t qualify for Boston this time around or have the race of my life. Those last 9 miles were a good learning experience. I have never hit the wall before, and never considered walking in a race. I know now I have to increase my endurance, and keep electrolytes in balance to prevent the cramping.

After resting for the last 2 days, my legs feel a lot better and I am able to lightly run again. I’m looking forward to getting back into training, increasing my long runs, and maybe someday have a breakthrough marathon.

The race went very well for Eric as he finished the race around 4 hours. The weather was brisk and the route was mostly flat for the final 16 miles. He was challenged in the beginning because he joined the 4:30 group at the start of the marathon. This meant that there were many people ahead of him, increasing the congestion among the 35,000 people that ran that day. Not until mile 7 was Eric able to start swerving between people and make up some time. Additionally, the lines for the restrooms were extremely long in the beginning, so by Eric stopping at mile 4 caused a 15 minute delay in his run time as well. After mile 7, Eric seemed to have a boost of energy because he stepped up the pace and was able to quickly make up time without hitting his “wall” or sustaining injuries. The Lord blessed in all aspects of this marathon, from great training to a motivating, injury free run. Overall, it was a great time to get out in the nation’s capital and run for BeatingDebt.org.

So today is my 1 year anniversary with marathons. I ran my first one last year on 10/26/08. It was

So today is my 1 year anniversary with marathons. I ran my first one last year on 10/26/08. It was fabulous- my parents came up to watch, my brother came to run it (we ended up finishing together even though we hadn’t run anywhere near each other during the whole race), one of my best friends ran it, some of my friends were awesome cheerleaders, and I had a shirt with my name and a line of a Pre quote on it. The quote was

A lot of people run a race to see who is fastest. I run to see who has the most guts, who can punish himself into exhausting pace, and then at the end, punish himself even more

I had the “to see who has the most guts” part painted on the back, because as competitive as I am, I also know that a marathon takes more than speed, focus, or discipline. It takes pure guts. The kind of guts you may not know you have until you’re forced to find out if you do. I finished with a 4:04 that first race and although I’d been hoping to crack 4 hours, I was still pretty excited and couldn’t fall asleep til 3 AM that night because I was so keyed up. Since then, I’ve run another in Houston (courtesy of my company) and one in Atlanta. Houston was a lot of fun, because 20-30 people from my firm were there and I got to meet a lot of cool runners. Unfortunately, it was also the worst I’ve ever been prepared for a race. Like any “relationship” you need to put time into marathon training, and I’d been slacking. My long run was a 13 miler (for good races I log at least an 18), I’d had a bad sinus infection and missed some key weeks of training for work travel to Korea and Germany, then couldn’t motivate myself to get out the door in December. I didn’t make training as much of a priority and it showed when I clocked a 4:24. I learned my lesson (I always seem to learn them the hard way) and was determined to crack 4 in Atlanta. I trained well, running lots of hills with my friend who was running National the week before, hitting up the track for speed, and putting in solid long runs. I rested well the week before, got some serious carbs in my system and was totally pumped for the race. I ran with the 4 hour pace group, then pulled away at mile 15 and ended up with a 3:56 after negative splitting. My entire family was cheering for me at the finish and I’ll always remember my dad yell “you’re doing it!” as I headed to the line with more than 3 minutes to spare. I’ll also always remember taking a picture with an adorable Georgia bulldog right after the race. I may not have been able to stand, but I was getting a picture with that puppy!

To celebrate my one year anniversary with marathons, I ran Marine Corps for the second time yesterday. It was another occasion of being less than well-prepared. Again, I had been traveling, this time to Japan and Korea, and hadn’t run as many long runs as I’d hoped. I ran a 20-miler, but that was the week before the race, something any runner will tell you is a terrible idea. The race started out well and I was logging 8:50-9 minute miles pretty consistently for the first 16-17 miles. There was a potential for a PR! But then I couldn’t sustain the pace and was dropping to 9:20-9:30s. As the last ten miles dragged on, my goal got consistently slower. “Just break 4,” I thought to myself, then “Ok, K Reed, you can do 4:05.” After the bridge (1.5 miles of sheer hell and 7 total spectators) I knew even that would be a challenge. As I ran miles 22-24 in Crystal City I just wanted this race to end. I was not feeling the love this anniversary. I wanted to break up with marathons. I wished I could quit them. But I knew I wouldn’t. After mile marker 25 I got a little more bounce to my step. I was so close. As I rounded the corner to climb the final stretch, conquer that last hill, crush those final 200 yards I…. puked. Not once. Not twice. But three times. In front of all of the finish-line spectators and runners coming up the hill. A Marine came to ask if I was alright and needed help to get to the finish line. I told him:

Nah, I got this

After 26.15 miles no one was helping me to the finish. I was going to get there on my own. So I regrouped and prepared to execute, sprinting to the finish amidst chants of “Go REED” (thanks to K Reed being written on my shirt.) It was over. I was done. 4:11.21. It certainly wasn’t a great showing, being 15 minutes slower than my best and 7 minutes slower than my first marathon ever on the same course a year earlier. But I’d like to think that somewhere Pre, a fellow duck, is laughing with (or at) me. Happy anniversary, marathons. Here’s to many more years of running together. For better (PRs) and worse (puking), I’ll be right next to you.

Yesterday was a momentous occasion for fans of film, television, gaming, anime, manga, and everythin

Yesterday was a momentous occasion for fans of film, television, gaming, anime, manga, and everything in between. On the 24th of October I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the ‘London MCM expo 2009‘ where it seems tens of thousands of fans of all ages gathered to appreciate what it was they represented.

I, along with two of my very good friends awoke at 6 AM, were showered and ready by 6:40 AM and then we left for the mini bus which subsequently set it’s course for London at 7 AM. We arrived and after parking quickly followed by queuing for a short while, we were finally available to venture the ExCel building. The inside was amazing, the hall roughly the size of a football pitch comprising entirely of stalls from all variations of game developers, comic providers, and small upcoming businesses were selling their specialities. Some of the attendees themselves had astonishing costumes, from the Power Rangers, to Godzilla, to many a hero from the DC universe. It was, in a sense, ever nerds dream.

I’m not afraid to show my nerdy side, and there is nothing wrong with appreciating good craftsmanship, even if it does include intergalactic conquests and funny looking protagonists. This year there were notable appearances from Elijah Wood, Craig Charles, Tom Baker, the cast of ‘Merlin‘; ‘Warehouse 13‘ and the writer and illustrator of the upcoming comic book adaptation ‘The Losers‘. Unfortunately due to time being well spent, or not so well spent depending on your perspective, I was not able to pay much attention towards the guests, it may seem trivial but I went straight to the ‘free comics‘ DC stall, it was worth it. It was my first time at the London Expo, but I have to admit, it will most certainly not be my last, in fact I’m thinking of attending both London Expo May 2010, and San Diego Comic Con 2010, we shall see. For those who have never been, I recommend it to be something you do at least once in your life time, there is no doubt that you’ll enjoy it.

This weekend Taz Arnold and his group Sa-Ra performed in Paris for the “Free Your Funk” event. It seemed like a fun event to attend. The one thing that I like about Taz Arnold and his Ti$a movement is that he looks like he always has fun everywhere he goes. By the way does anybody know when a new Sa-Ra album is dropping? But anyways here’s some pictures from the performance.

Taz killed this fit. I need one of those MCM raincoats asap, especially before I go to fashion week in London.

Only Taz would go on stage with the illest blanket.

Lately it has been raining a lot, and this would be a perfect time to bring out one of those Ti$a MCM raincoats. I personally would go with the blue joint, and throw on a Ski Club logo tee on underneath. Hopefully when I go out to Cali on Friday I’ll be able to find a spot that has some Ti$a MCM pieces in stock, because they have none down here and I can’t find any of the pieces online.

Now that I notice the Cognac joint is nice too. Pictures like this give me inspiration when I design because Taz’s style is dumb creative.

In less than 2 weeks, I’m running the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) in DC and cannot wait. Just this

In less than 2 weeks, I’m running the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) in DC and cannot wait. Just this week I received an email from the event coordinators highlighting Brooks Sports VIP Porta-Potties that made me chuckle a bit and then give kudos to Brooks for such a great guerrilla marketing concept.

The concept is simple, wear official 2009 MCM or Brooks Sports gear and you get access to Brooks’ VIP Porta-Potties! The VIP Porta Potties will include men’s and women’s suites, flushing toilets in private stalls, a stainless-steel sink with running water, mirrors, lights, climate-controlled temperature, and paper towels. The Brooks VIP treatment will also include:

Valet attendants

Hand Soap

Fresh-cut flowers

Individually wrapped mints

Lotion

Feminine products

Considering the MCM is the 10th largest marathon in the world with more than 18,000 runners and 150,000 spectators, this might actually be worth it. This isn’t my first experience with large marathons (I ran the Disney Marathon in 2008) and I know the porta-potty lines will be long prior to the race. I am seriously considering purchasing some Brooks gear!

My daughter goes to the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park New York. After their first year of school, they’re required to spend 5 months externing at a business where they can practice their craft. Since she’s taking Baking and Pastry, she’s working at a bakery – Wild Flour, in Rocky River, Ohio. We’ve been there over 2 weekends – first to meet the owner and then to move her in.

This city is amazing. Wonderful neighborhoods full of gorgeous homes from Tudor cottages to elegant Victorians. The urban architecture is so fun to look at - loads of mid century modern buildings with strong lines, zig zag roof structures – you name it, this city has it.

There is a building at 20800 Center Ridge Rd, the Suburban West Building. The first time we drove past, I noticed the concrete slabs and deep teal panels over the windows. Just beautiful and a simple, clean design. If I needed an office, and I lived in Rocky River, it would be in this building.

Next visit with my daughter, I plan on taking my camera and documenting some of the delicious architecture that Rocky River & surrounding areas have to offer.
