It was quite an emotional moment when Sun’s co-founder passed on the keys of his company to Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison.

Now Java is all Oracle’s, which includes Java the language, Java the platform (virtual machines, APIs), the newly announced JavaStore (for desktop apps only), JavaFX (a graphical user interface for Java programs), Netbeans (a rising development platform) and Glassfish, an open source application server and direct competitor to RedHat’s JBoss.

At the show, Sun also announced it’s upcoming Sun Cloud which should be released incrementally throughout Summer.

I just can’t help to think that Ellison made quite a deal buying a $14 billion-revenue company for half that, at only $7.4 billion. Can’t beat that!

Today, the Wall Street Journal reports that IBM is in talks to buy Sun Microsystems for a mere $6.5 billion in cash, less $1.63 billion the Silicon Valley company has already in the bank.

A chump change for Big Blue which has about $12.7 billion in its cash reserve, but a 100 per cent premium for the Santa Clara, Calif.-company stockholders!

What a reverse of fortune for Sun which also approached H-P. I remember co-founder Scott McNealy telling me last year that before anyone think of acquiring his company they will have to have it least $20 billion. Now, it’s about a quarter of that.

An IBM-Sun combination would become undisputedly the world’s largest server maker with 42 per cent market share, against H-P (29.5 per cent) and Dell (11.6 per cent); as well as a formidable force in the data center arena, open source software and storage.

While our Nation’s economy freezes up, waiting to be completely overhauled, it may give some of you at least a little bit of a warm feeling to know that things are still humming here in the Silicon Valley.

For proof, I offer up the Plug and Play Expo, happening in Sunnyvale. It’s where startups meet VCs, business cards fly across the room, dozens upon dozens of pitches get heard .. and deals get done.

Among the startups we saw today are www.mylawsuit.com, a way to help both lawyers and plaintiffs get organized. As you can imagine, this table had a steady stream of people asking questions about everything from housing, to divorce.

Also, www.apprema.com, a site aiming at the gift-giving market. Especially in tough times, this will make sending gifts, corporate or personal, faster, easier, and cheaper.

And how about www.everywun.com .. this could change the way philanthropy is handled .. giving you a ridiculously easy way to contribute to a number of charities with the click of a mouse.

For the startups, it was a chance to meet investors, and hear from the likes of Scott McNealy and super VC Tim Draper. For the investors, a chance to get a bead on what’s on the horizon. Hint: Lots of web apps, aimed at making our lives more efficient.

We wish them luck.

You have zero privacy anyway. Get over it” (De todos modos, tienes privacidad cero.
