You can connect to your own work computer from home, let’s look at ways to connect with other people at other computers. NetMeeting is an old standby for communicating over the Internet and phone lines, and was one of the earliest conferencing applications created by Microsoft.

Communications with NetMeeting include chatting in real time, using web cams and/or microphones for video and voice communications, using an electronic whiteboard, and even sharing programs. Users can work collaboratively across the globe on graphics, documents, or proposals, without ever having to leave their office.

NetMeeting is no longer an application that is installed by default

Where Is NetMeeting?

You likely don’t know where NetMeeting is, and if you look for it, you probably won’t find it either.

To install and run NetMeeting and make it available on your computer:

1. Click Start | Run and type conf. Click OK.

2. In the NetMeeting dialog box, click Next to work through the wizard and install the program. If you’ve previously installed it, NetMeeting will start automatically.

3. As you work through the wizard, you’ll be required to:

■ Fill in the information for name, e-mail address, etc.

■ Select Microsoft Internet Directory as the default.

■ Select the connection speed.

■ Choose whether or not to place a shortcut on the Desktop.

■ Test and configure your microphone, if one is installed.

MCP Screen Printer Retains Stable Solder-Pressure Assembleon is showing its new high-speed, high-qua

MCP Screen Printer Retains Stable Solder-Pressure

Assembleon is showing its new high-speed, high-quality MCP screen printer at Productronica 2009, from 10-13 November. Assembleon’s MCP screen printer has an innovative head design with variable attack-angle printing, allowing it to maintain constant solder-pressure independent of the stencil thickness. The single-head system also allows easy setup and reduces maintenance by half. With a board cycle-time as low as 11 seconds, it is the first stencil printer to match the high throughput of some of today’s high-volume pick-and-place machines.

It is the first printer to match their high quality, too, by reducing defect per million (dpm) figures by up to 50 per cent. As a result, the MCP is ideal for high-speed and high-quality manufacturing and is a perfect match for Assembleon’s single-digit dpm A-Series equipment and high-quality, high-mix MC-Series. High precision, high-speed printing-component miniaturisation and reduced component interspacing are challenging even to modern screen printers. While maintaining high output, screen printers should be able to handle a wide mix of components, down to 01005, with small interspacing (down to 100um).

They should also adapt to PCB material trends such as flexible printed circuits (Flexfoil). The MCP has a flat-metal single-head squeegee to improve the speed and quality of printing. The squeegee’s variable-angle print-head improves the repeatability of the paste deposition for 01005 components, even after a stencil cleaning. The squeegee maintains constant solder pressure and produces perfect solder shapes with stencil thickness down to 50um and half edging stencils with stencil steps of 30 to 50um. It is ideal for PCBs mixing 01005 (0.4 x 0.2mm) types with larger component sizes.

The fast wet or dry vacuum-cleaning system operates during the PCB transport cycle, minimising the impact on tact time. All cleaning actions are performed with a minimum use of paper. The MCP also has a special feature that keeps the stencil from shifting during the print stroke, allowing better print repeatability on any board, even Flexfoil. To accomplish this, the stencil is secured on each side of the board during the print stroke, which holds the stencil in place and prevents it from sliding on the board.

Reducing the cost of quality has a high priority within manufacturing. Of all manufacturing defects caused by the soldering process, 87 per cent are caused by soldering, and more than half of these are printer related. Costs can be significantly reduced and end-of-line yield increased by avoiding or finding defects as early as possible. The MCP’s high-speed digital-inspection camera scans the printed PCB, detecting excess or insufficient solder and bridging and eliminating them from production.

Sorry for the short pause between posts – real life called and I had to answer. Since this blog has (of this date) had a grand total of about 10 views, it’s not really likely to worry you, dear reader. By the time I start actively promoting links here on flight sim sites, this will be but a distant memory…

Anyway, last time I was describing the basic assembly of the console shell for Phase 1 of my cockpit project. Immediately thereafter, I turned my attention to the construction of the glareshield (see Glossary Part 1 for a less-concise definition of what a glareshield comprises), the ‘bit that sticks out over the top’.

Almost every aircraft has a glareshield of some description, since glare is a constant problem for daytime flying. In many cases this is a simple as a slightly extended lip of the console top. In many heavier aircraft, however, the glareshield is host to a number of instruments and controls; most notably the master control panel for the autopilot and nav systems and the EFIS (which controls the mode that the glass systems operate in) for pilot and co-pilot.

Glareshield of a Boeing 737 with MCP and twin EFIS

So, the basic description of a typical airliner glareshield is that it sticks out over the main panel a bit and looks like two triangles and a rectangle squashed together. In a real aircraft, and in many sims, the glareshield is part of the top of the console itself. Many builders build their console on a down-angle to form the necessary angle for the main panel, and then the glareshield simply fits on top and adopts the right angle automatically. My console top is flat (because it has to act as a standing surface for a large LCD display) and hence things were not quite so easy; I also needed to foreshorten the length of the glareshield quite a bit to allow it all to fit where I needed. Here’s a picture of my earliest hack at the problem:

Glareshield frame, Take 1

This is a dead-simple trapezoidal shape, extending out from the console dash line 100mm or so, angled at a right-angle to the slope of the front console which is 15 degrees. At this point the various MDF panels making up the structure are raw-edged and abutting. Later on I sanded down edges and angles to blend together as best I could (a fair degree of wood filler was still required to make it all go). For various reasons I was unhappy with this approach. Most glareshields I had seen blended in nicely with the cockpit mounting of the main console – this one would not do so. But in the end, with a simple MDF front panel bolted on, it was just a bit… plain.

I decided that I wanted some kind of protruding lip over the top of the shield, similar to what you’d see on most real-world versions. I also decided that some kind of fabric / leather detailing would be useful, as the top cover of most consoles is either covered with some form of padded fabric / leather / vinyl or is made from a moulded soft plastic (not least because, should you happen to bump your head on it, it gives way and prevents major injury). A quick trip to B&Q bought me some 18mm softwood shelving which could be repurposed to serve as the top lip /cover, and searching for leatherette covering I came upon a vinyl wallpaper with a leather effect that looked quite suitable, and bought a roll of that.

The finished-off glareshield frame needed a paint first

The new lip was designed to stick out over the ends of the frame, and a new detail was added to the front at each end (this is supposed to resemble the moulded baffles you find on various aircraft glareshields, but it didn’t really come out that well – I’m going to live with it for this phase and maybe think again in phase 2). This then gave me an opportunity to put in angled ends (detail below).

Glareshield baffle structure with vinyl trim visible

Angle structure at the glareshield ends

I’m still unhappy with the glareshield structure in general, but it’s consumed far too many weekends for me to consider rebuilding it from scratch now. When and if I move to an enclosed structure with projected displays and the requirement for a flat top to the console disappears, I may re-engineer it completely. For now, it’ll do.

Finished glareshield frame mounted on newly-painted console

Next steps for the glareshield are the panels of which there will be three: an MCP and twin EFIS. I’m going to mount some telltales / indicators on the baffle structures and possibly put built-in speakers for external sound in there too. LED lamps will be mounted in the glareshield base to optionally illuminate the panels below. The MCP build will be the most challenging electronic part of the project, using several USB-driven two-line LCD displays and a host of switches and rotary controls. I considered buying an Airbus-style MCP off the shelf, but ultimately I want all the panels on the sim to share a common look and I wasn’t planning to slavishly follow either Airbus or Boeing style on the rest of the panels. Besides, building it yourself is much more fun…

Diane Mack worries a lot. In fact, she is a professional class worrier.

When she sees expanses of glass, Mack cringes. When large crowds gather, she is anxious. Mack can’t help but look for potential threats and danger.

It all comes with the territory of working to make sure the campus has the right policies, equipment, and procedures to keep everyone on campus as safe as can be.

Mack, who had been director for strategic planning at the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, joined IUPUI on January 2, 2008 as the Emergency Preparedness Manager.

At Homeland Security, Mack helped set the course the state took when it came to developing homeland security and emergency management initiatives. In her new role, she will help develop plans to protect the campus from hazards that come with being a major urban university.

Yesss! Just passed the 70-562 exam with good score and got the MCTS certification for Technology Specialist: .NET Framework 3.5 ASP.NET Applications!

Let me share some of my experience…

Preparing the Exam

I passed the foundation exam (70-536) in August and took me one and a half month to prepare for this one.

I set as primary goal to learn and apply it, not just pass the exam. So I used both the official preparation guide and a few good books to cover some of the aspects the training kit did not cover well enough, as follows:

MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-562): Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5
ASP.NET Application Developmeent

Pro ASP.NET 3.5 in C#

Pro LINQ: Language Integrated Query in C# 2008

Pro ASP.NET 3.5 Server Controls and AJAX Components

For the training kit, I took the approach of reading through the different chapters of the book, doing the labs and then taking the practice tests.

Taking the Exam

The required score to pass is 700/1000. There is only the pass or fail grade as the end result; beyond that the actual score you get does not have any importance.
During the exam, I took the approach of getting through the full set of questions once, and then going back for review each of them.
One thing you have to consider is that there is a slight delay between the questions (in order of 4-8 seconds). In other words, you need to consider these as well when setting up your time for review.

My Points and Suggestions

1. Take the training kit as a guide only. You can get a deeper knowledge by practicing and reading the details on the documentation (MSDN).
2. During the exam, there are questions that can be found only in books other than the prep guide. Good guessing is the key for these. For example, the mobile section needs further reading.

The CHAPS team has been working hard on the latest assignment: a group project laying out our focus,

The CHAPS team has been working hard on the latest assignment: a group project laying out our focus, goals, and strategy. After Pat McGuigan’s talk and some preliminary research we’ve decided to focus on early childhood education. We think there’s a a great need for more than just a pilot program in providence where the achievement gap is astounding. And as McGuigan pointed out this issue is getting a lot of traction and attention nationally so this could definitely be helpful in making sure our funds are utilized in the best way possible. The readings and the best practices excercise have been really helpful in making us aware of the various roles and strategies of a foundation as well just what’s out there in the world of philanthropy. And we all agreed that the Making Connections meeting was key because it made us see the importance of community dynamics and making sure that we cater the grant to the specific community it’s supposed to serve. We’ve split up the paper into six different components and are all doing our work on a shared Google Doc. The biggest challenge to this paper so far is finding times to get together and making sure we’re all on the same page so that the paper is coherent. We’re only a couple weeks into school, and I think we’ve all already gained some great experience at teamwork and communicating. Our goals going forward are to become experts in the arena of early childhood education and be able to clearly and concisely articulate our grant focus to others.

This first week of class has been both exciting and overwhelming. We are eager to start tackling the challenge presented by the class yet slightly nervous about navigating team dynamics and becoming involved in the community. We met yesterday to formulate our team contract. After discussing everyone’s individual working styles and defining group expectations (being on time, completing assignments, communicating, etc.) we defined our goals. Our mission as a team is to gain a better understanding of how foundations make decisions and how they assess nonprofits. We are also committed to understanding the Providence-specific community context. We hope to see past this project as a class assignment, assessing candidates equally and fairly to make a grant that we feel confident and happy about. Additionally, we decided to use consensus as the means for making decisions. We also defined roles for during meetings and assignments.

In The Foundation Fleishman states that “a clear diagnosis of the problem” (p. 168) is the first step for Foundations in achieving high impact. Our group was struggling with not having a complete understanding of the problem we are trying to deal with. Today’s visit to MCP definitely helped to make the problem clearer. Our challenge in the coming weeks will be to narrow our area of focus, identify roadblocks to the problem formulate a strategy and implement our plan.

Pakistan has popularly been quoted as the land of doctors, engineers, scientists, bankers and worker

Pakistan has popularly been quoted as the land of doctors, engineers, scientists, bankers and workers. Every once a while however there comes a star that turns the world attention to itself. Babar Iqbal is one such Pakistani Star who has raised the bar on early achievements in the field of Information Technology.

Babar iqbal receives an acknowledgement from the President of Pakistan

Babar Iqbal is World’s Youngest:

1. Certified Internet Web Professional (CIWP)

2. Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP)

3. Certified Wireless Network Administrator (CWNA)

4. Microsoft Student Partner (MSP)

5. Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS)

You can learn more about Babar at his personal website at www.babariqbal.com .

Supporting Pakistani IT Talent

Another important aspect of this individual’s story has been the talent support infrastructure. Babar has been able to achieve and share so much due to financial & organizational support by companies like Microsoft. However Babar also mentions that he is not being provided any support by the Pakistani government to share his talents and technical skills with other fellow Pakistani IT students and professionals. Babar provides IT student consulting in the Middle East supported by Microsoft. It must not be any difficult for Pakistan’s Ministry of IT & Telecom (MoITT) to setup a dedicated cell that maintains a database of leading Pakistani IT professionals and support them in sharing their skills with the Pakistani IT industry. Infact the Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) which is also an arm of the MoITT may look into organizing workshops for technical training utilizing such leading professionals. The Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA) can also play a key role in facilitating the PSEB. This would go a long way in building national confidence into depending on indigenous resources and strengthening of the professional network.
