Should’ve been at uni today. Wasn’t. Oops. I had little desire to attend my first-thing lectures, and this wasn’t helped by the bitterly cold weather (December has arrived gracefully but abruptly). I was also due to be meeting a chap from a radio station with John with a view to furthering our media dabblings (ho ho), but this was sadly postponed at quite short notice. It’ll still go ahead, next week I believe, but its cancellation meant that I really ought to have been at uni. Ho hum.

One piece of lovely email cheered me up though: BBC Manchester’s website wants to do a little feature on Manchester Daily Photo, which pleases me greatly. They asked me a few basic questions and I seem to have rambled on and on in reply. I’ll post a link when I can.

Almost out of guilt rather than anything else, I gave myself marching orders and headed out to Fallowfield to visit our usual pet shop where I found the bits we needed. It was quite a nice walk – just the right distance (something like 4 miles), and the weather – crisp, cold and dry – made it very pleasant.

This afternoon I frantically sought the lecture slides for things I missed last week, and then today, but could only find some of them. It would be the week I miss two days’ worth of lectures that the slides seem to be missing. Still, I can’t beat myself up about missing two days too much. When I find myself struggling with coursework or exams I’ll worry, but at the moment I feel relatively comfortable. I know I’ve a couple of tests in the last week of this term, so I’ll make sure I’m on top of those.

And it seems as though I’ll have a little extra time to make sure I’m prepared, as the Glasgow trip has been put off till an unknown date. Unfortunate circumstances, end-of-term tests and a lack of cash so close to Christmas mean that the trip probably wasn’t such a great idea anyway. When we booked the buses it seemed ideal but I guess we just didn’t really think it through properly. Ho hum. However, this did lead to me working out my budget for the time between now and the next loan payment and finding to my immense pleasure that I can just about make it through. This will be markedly better than this time last year, although that was to be expected; my first term at uni – no such thing as budgeting and no concept of handling money that came every term instead of every month.

Brief news from the mothership – Grandmama is out of hospital and safely moved back home. Family have rallied around, with visits from sister and nephews. Cousin Anthony is staying with her for the next few weeks before he heads back to NZ for the summer (a rather popular idea of late, it seems), at which point it sounds like Aunty Clare may be doing the reverse and coming here to help out. Good work all round, and just fantastic to know that Grandmama is back in her own home three weeks after her stroke.

Anyway. I must be up and into uni bright and early tomorrow to print off two weeks’ worth of lecture slides to get caught up. And so to bed with a good book.

1. La réduction des gaz à effet de serre (GES)

La solution la plus efficace pour protéger notre climat est de réduire fortement les émissions de GES dans tous les secteurs. Nous appelons donc les pays développés à prendre leurs responsabilités. Nous exigeons de  :

• Limiter la hausse de la température moyenne mondiale à 1,5°C par rapport à 1850 ;
• Stabiliser la concentration de CO2 dans l’atmosphère à 350 ppm ;
• Réduire les émissions de GES de 40% pour 2020 par rapport à 1990 ;
• Avoir pour objectif de diminuer les émissions de GES de 95% pour 2050 par rapport à 1990

2. Déforestation

Les forêts constituent d’importants réservoirs de carbone car les arbres captent et stockent du CO2. Des millions d’hectares de forêts disparaissent tous les ans à cause de l’expansion agricole, du développement d’infrastructures, etc. La déforestation représente environ 20% des émissions mondiales de CO2 et elle engendre de nombreuses conséquences désastreuses (perte de biodiversité, déplacement de populations, etc. ).

=>écolo j considère que l’accord de Copenhague doit inclure un mécanisme financier visant à mettre un terme à la déforestation et la dégradation des forêts d’ici 2020. Les réductions d’émissions ainsi obtenues doivent être additionnelles (et non soustraites) aux réductions d’émissions des pays industrialisés.

3. Financement

Les pays industrialisés sont responsables des émissions passées de GES et restent encore maintenant de grands émetteurs. Ils possèdent en outre des ressources financières et technologiques. Ils doivent par conséquent aider les pays en développement, plus vulnérables et premières victimes du changement climatique, à réduire leurs émissions et à s’adapter aux impacts à venir.

=>écolo j suit les différents experts et les ONG, et réclame qu’au moins 110 milliards d’euros par an de fonds publics doivent être mobilisés d’ici 2015 pour mettre en place des mesures de réduction des émissions et soutenir l’adaptation au changement climatique dans les pays en développement. L’Union Européenne devrait financer un tiers de cette somme (35 milliards d’euros par an). Cette somme doit être prévisible, durable, transparente et additionnelle aux autres transferts financiers, liés notamment à la coopération au développement.

4. Protocole de Kyoto

Le protocole de Kyoto a montré ses limites et nécessite d’être réformé. Le nouvel accord post-Kyoto doit inclure des mécanismes plus stricts et des objectifs plus ambitieux. Il nécessite aussi une participation par le plus grand nombre de pays possible.

=> écolo j considère que le nouvel accord doit respecter le principe de responsabilité différenciée. Les pays ne doivent pas participer à l’effort de la même manière. Par ailleurs écolo j estime que le nouvel accord doit aussi envisager des objectifs contraignants pour les pays émergents (Brésil, Chine,Inde). Les Etats-Unis doivent eux aussi participer pleinement à la lutte contre les changements climatiques en ratifiant le nouvel accord.

5. Mécanisme pour un développement propre (MDP)

Jusqu’à présent le mécanisme pour un développement propre  (un des trois mécanismes de flexibilité) a généré des projets dans un nombre restreint de pays (Chine, Brésil et Inde) et n’a pas réellement contribué au développement durable de ceux-ci.

=> écolo j considère qu’à partir de 2013, le MDP doit être limité aux pays en développement dits moins avancés disposant d’une capacité limitée à réduire leurs émissions de GES. Il doit de plus tenir compte du développement durable et le nucléaire, la capture et la séquestration du carbone ne peuvent être éligibles pour le MDP.

Volendo fare una focaccia non troppo grossa, adatta alla mia famiglia, ho sperimentato, con successo, la seguente ricetta:

g 210 farina manitoba

g 55 semola rimacinata di grano duro

g 180 acqua tiepida

g 50 olio di oliva e.v.

g 7 sale integrale

1 cucchiaino scarso di zucchero

3 grammi lievito di birra secco

un cucchiaino di sale grosso

per la salamoia 1 pizzico di sale, 3 cucchiai d’olio, 1 cucchiaio d’acqua

Procedimento: mettere l’acqua tiepida (tenendone indietro mezza tazzina) e il sale nel cestello della MdP. Aggiungere le farine e l’olio. Nel frattempo sciogliere il lievito disidratato e lo zucchero nell’acqua rimasta e aggiungere al resto del composto.

Azionare la macchina del pane sul programma impasto. Quando il programma sarà terminato stendere la pasta in una teglia in modo che non sia troppo bassa e schiacciarla con la punta delle dita per conferire il tipoìico aspetto gibboso. Coprire la teglia con uno strofinaccio e lasciar lievitare ancora una quindicina di minuti. A questo punto preparare la salamoia sbattendo energicamente con una forchetta finchè gli ingredienti non si emulsionino leggermente. Versare l’emulsione sulla focaccia e spalmarla con le dita. Aggiungere qualche grano di sale grosso e porre in forno a 180° per una ventina di minuti.

E’ possibile, credo, preparare la stessa ricetta anche senza macchina del pane impastando energicamente e lasciando lievitare per un’oretta in luogo umido e tiepido.

Today I was one of a possible 200+ people that gathered in Kalamazoo to rally and than march from Wesley Foundation on Western Michigan University campus to the Strutt. Lead by One Kalamazoo the march pushed for the Ordinance 1856 for a yes vote on November 3rd. If passed in 9 days it will end discrimination in housing, employment, and public accommodation in Kalamazoo for sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression.

After 2 years of work, city officials from the Mayor Hopewell to City Commissioners, Moore, Cooney, Anderson, came out to speak. Also was Terry K a author of the ordnance and openly gay candidate to Kalamazoo City Commission.

Others that attended were the Kalamazoo County Chair, Adam Taylor (myself) of the Michigan Democratic Party LBGTA Caucus which help get the word out, and supported. The LBGTA Caucus is a endorses of the bill. Note the MDP is a supporter.

The College students of Western Michigan came out in high numbers to Wesley Foundation. David Topping president of the Outspoken group spoke for safety of the students and ability to feel safe coming out.

City Commissioner Moore spoke of the African American vote coming out in strong support of this. That the opposition should not and can not count on the African American community to vote against their brothers and sisters who are GLBT. She spoke and sang as a strong Christian African American women and a city commission.

David Garcia of the Kalamazoo Gay Lesbian Resource Center spoke of gay morality being high jacked by conservatives and to have our straight allies as they are the white people to the African American Civil Movement.

University of Michigan Dems sent a group of 25 volunteers across the state for the day, to call, canvas and march.

I did some recruiting bringing Kzooers, Lansing, Grand Rapids, and Ann Arbor to the march.

One Kalamazoo the spotlight of Michigan GLBT movement as what happens in Kalamazoo does not stay in Kalamazoo. When passed Kalamazoo will be the 16th of nearly 1600 municipalities in the state to have this protection.

This morning I got the news that City Commissioner Candidate in Kalamazoo, Kai Philips went to far! He has in writing disclosed the Mayor of Kalamazoo sexual orientation, and used it as an attack on the mayor during elections. Once again Kai Philips focuses on attacking people and not the issues of the city.

3) Voters will decide Nov. 3 whether the city should reinstate or reject an
ordinance outlawing discrimination based on sexual identity or gender
identification in matters of employment, housing and access to public
accommodations. Do you favor or oppose this ordinance?
I will always favor equality. I believe everyone, regardless of sexual
orientation, should receive the same services and have the same rights as I
do. I personally believe Kalamazoo has shown how much opportunity it
actually has for the LGBT community by electing its first gay mayor, Bobby
Hopewell. Nevertheless, although I do favor equality, I believe the crafters
of this ordinance did a horrible job when creating it and so therefore, I do
oppose it. Two quick issues that come to mind are a $500 fine for businesses
which is almost impossible to enforce fairly when it’s one’s word against
another and religious organizations being left vulnerable because the
ordinance doesn’t properly protect them. This is a prime example of what
happens when ordinances are rushed by a commission – unanswered
questions create the problems we intended to avoid. Additionally, a further
reading of the ordinance will reveal that the city actually put an exemption
in the ordinance which exempts the city government and any governmental
institute to ignore the new ordinance. If the new ordinance truly is good for
Kalamazoo, why would same body who wrote the ordinance exempt
themselves?

A few weeks ago during city hall meeting he called for the resignation of City Commissioner Stephanie Moore, on grounds that did not hold up upon review of City Attorney.

Today Kai Philips attacks the Mayor of Kalamazoo, trying smear him over his sexuality which he has not hidden but has not announced to the city. Mayor Hopewell, has been known within the Kalamazoo GLBT community and been respected with his wishes as this is a personal choice. In the eve of the One Kalamazoo ballot vote to pass that discrimination in housing, employment and public accommodation would cover sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression, this is yet another reason we need to stand up against Kai Philips.

Democrats support Mayor Hopewell and the current city commissioners and Terry K. running for elections. We can not let Kai Philips be a voice for the city of Kalamazoo!

Friends, and fellow Michiganders I write you out of need. I am a gay man and a resident of Kalamazoo. On Oct. 11th Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender people of America will mark the National Day of Coming Out. I and many others from the nation and our state will take to action with the National Equality March in DC that weekend, demands a simple message full equality demanded from all 435 congressional districts. This however does not take away the many examples of work that needs to be done back in our home areas.

As the saying is becoming known in Michigan movement for Equality what happens in Kalamazoo does not stay in Kalamazoo. The campaign for Non Discrimination in Housing, Employment and Public Accommodation is needed and the vote day November 3rd is closing! We still have many doors to knock on, many yard signs to put up, and conservations and sharing of our stories as Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender, Queer, Questioning, identities to share and TOO PROTECT!

While I am in DC with the Michigan Democratic Party LBGTA Caucus marching all weekend for HIV/AIDS, Matthew Shepard Foundation, Trevor Project, and so many other amazing and high action seeking causes I can not forget my home city Kalamazoo. I have given while and when I can with what I can. I today find that while I am not in my city, for this year’s National Coming Out Day I can do this PROJECT THE MESSAGE out into my social networks how to get invovled, spread the word and help me raise a donation goal to One Kalamazoo.

KUDOS TO MDP for puttin us on!

For those that were not up most of the night, at midnight the GOP held hostage continuation budget was still not called for “immediate effect” as such at Midnight some 51,000 state employees were officially unemployed. Thankfully at 2:30am the Senate agreed to the continuation budget that was agreed on last week to avoid a government shut down in the face that law makers could not agree on the budget on time. The agreement was signed by the governor at her desk at 2:30am, giving Michigan 30 days to get its budget plan together and will pass both the House and the Senate.

The news comes as well that fire and police departments will be getting major cuts in state appropriated funds. Reports state that East Lansing on this cut would lose some $600,000. The Michigan Promise is still on the chopping block as well as massive cuts in education.

While the House has passed a budget it is Dem controlled the Republican held Senate is not agreeing. These back and fourth non compromises are calling some to ask, where were Michigan lawmakers all summer? Maybe they should have started budget voting and negotiations weeks sooner to avoid what is not become a annual debacle in Lansing, of a few hour Government shut down.
It is a state’s constitutional duty to balance their budget annually and Michigan once again will be watched by the nation as it on a extension works to do so, via massive cuts. The where the cuts fall is the center of the debate.

Democrats do not wish to see education, and infrastructure like police and fire cut, as these are investments to tomorrow while Republicans are willing to slash $60million in university financial aid and the Mi Promise Scholarship stating that college students have the chance to fend for themselves while children do not. Fire and Police should be raised and paid for by local tax payers not the state.

Hello my name is Adam Taylor, I have been a resident of Kalamazoo now since 2006. Since 2007 I have volunteered on the efforts that today is on the final days of passing an ordinance on the ballot in November that will make it illegal to discriminate in employment, housing and public accommodation on bases of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression.

I started my services with being on the Kalamazoo Alliance for Equality Steering Committee in 2007 and 2008. Than moved in 2009 to serve with the Michigan Democratic Party in a few roles such being a Vice Chair of the Executive Board LBGTA Caucus, as well as Chair of the Southwest Michigan Committee, and as well serve on the Congressional District Executive Committee. With that said I can say that the Michigan Democratic Party deeply wishes to see this ordinance pass. I submitted the LBGTA Caucus endorsement and wanted to do more.

As I am a low income and sadly laid off university student I can not give dollars myself but I can give my time and abilities in asking for donations. I am hoping to contribute by raising $250.00 for non discrimination in Kalamazoo. Will you help me in educating the community and bringing equality to my city, and help it be a stepping block for other cities in Michigan to follow such as Jackson, Hamtramck, and Battle Creek? Students, specific from the College Dems have been highly pressuring to this, such as a statement

“On the other hand, it would be very difficult, if not impossible, for us to campaign in the future for any politician who did not support and defend the Michigan Promise. In the past, we have made countless phone calls, knocked on doors and campaigned on campus for Carl Levin, Debbie Stabenow, John Dingell, Glenn Anderson, Marty Griffin, Bart Stupak, Gary Peters, Mark Schauer, and many others. As one of the largest College Democrats chapters in the country, our large volunteer base is an invaluable resource.

“Furthermore, all students should take note of how their senators and representatives vote on higher education funding, as students are the ones who will be affected by the Legislature’s broken promise.”

The news is that the pressure we are bearing down is making a turn around for the final budget to include keeping the Michigan Promise.

Some corrections have to be noted, that Kalamazoo County District 60 House Rep Robert Jones and Calhoun County/Battle Creek Marty Griffin have come out last night to support the Vote but some emails released today questioned their support. Robert Jones staff expressed to me over the phone their deep support to students and that it was on their newsletter last night. http://060.housedems.com/

We are asking though that all College Students take a few minutes to call their legislator on both party lines to remind them the power of college students to their campaigns and that if a vote against us we will not be volunteering for them in their campaign which is the base they need.

Yesterday was a sad SAD day for Michigan Students and the Democrats. While I sat in class I watched the tweets and blogs come in.

The Higher Education Committee of Michigan which is made up of 3 Dems and 3 Republicans voted 4-2, cutting the full Michigan Promise Scholarship! Cutting $60million in financial aid dollars at universities. Damages are some $218 per pupil in education cut. Meaning just in Grand Rapids alone $4,000,000 cut for education. Overall cuts are $482,000,000 for the MI Education. This includes some $18.7 million to Detroit school aid programs.

Governor Granholm does not show support for this current Budget which has yet to be finalized in approval.

In the state with the highest high employment rates, being called the pit by graduating students, due to not being able to afford to stay and can if lucky afford to climb out and exodus the state for grad schools or job opportunities how can the Michigan Education Committee do this!?

How can we build a long term sustainable Michigan when our short term solution is to cut education year after year when our economy is post-industrious, so information and education/training is critical to be able to make a work force that can compete in the global market of today.

How can a Promise Scholarship Dems are asking be cut not before but DURING the college year?! How is that a Promise Republicans?!? This affects 100,000 students at state universities and colleges in Michigan.

How are we going to build a better tomorrow if we for today’s needs cut education time and time again. As a Western Michigan University student my response question is this? Has not the Republican party learned by history that when you raise the prices of needed services or products that the masses the people take to action. I am wondering when a mass demonstration from Michigan State University Students will take place. Not talking about a Rally that was lead two days ago by MSU Dems as they stormed the Capitol lawn chanting “Save the Promise” I am addressing when thousands of students take to leaving the class room march down the street and shut down downtown with massive numbers demanding the repeal these continuous slashes to education rising prices to unattainable levels for those not born into upper class families. The working class of Michigan’s future demands to have education training!

Já o MDP é produzido a partir da transformação de toras de madeira em partículas, que são aglutinadas e entrelaçadas com resinas especiais de última geração, que garantem maior estabilidade dimensional do painel e grande resistência à flexão, com a vantagem de ter um aproveitamento maior da matéria-prima do que o MDF, o que permite uma redução no seu custo. É especialmente indicado para a produção de móveis residenciais e comerciais de linhas retas, com formas orgânicas, que não exijam usinagens em baixo relevo, entalhes ou cantos arredondados. Suas principais aplicações são para portas retas, laterais de móveis, prateleiras, divisórias, tampos retos, tampos pós-formados, base superior e inferior, além de frentes e laterais de gaveta.

O MDP é encontrado com revestimento melamínico em BP (Baixa Pressão), FF (Finish Foil), ou sem revestimento para aplicação de lâminas de madeira, laminados de alta-pressão ou pintura e impressão.

A principal diferença entre os dois produtos é que no MDP são utilizadas partículas de madeira em camadas, ficando as mais finas na superfície e as mais grossas no miolo. Já no MDF, aglutinam-se fibras de madeira. No entanto, os dois são classificados como painéis de madeira de média densidade.

Vantagens

O MDP é o painel de madeira industrializada mais consumido no mundo para a fabricação de móveis residenciais e comerciais, seja pela indústria moveleira de larga escala ou marceneiros em geral. Sozinho ou junto de outros tipos de painéis, um móvel que utiliza MDP em sua estrutura será sempre mais econômico e competitivo, perto de móveis feitos com outras matérias-primas similares como o MDF, e ainda oferecerá melhor garantia e qualidade.

Comparado ao MDF, é mais leve e fácil de manusear; tem propriedades mecânicas superiores, como melhor resistência ao arrancamento de parafusos, ao empenamento e menor absorção de umidade; alta densidade das camadas superficiais, assegurando um acabamento superior nos processos de impressão, pintura e revestimentos.

Desvantagens

A aparência do MDP, que lembra o antigo aglomerado – mesmo sendo infinitamente superior em qualidade e durabilidade – chega a ser uma desvantagem para quem não pesquisa.

Outro ponto, assim como a própria madeira, tanto o MDF como o MDP são vulneráveis a ambientes úmidos.

In ferie, cara. Almeno la gran parte di loro. Annie è in viaggio con il compagno nuovo (quasi) di zecca: non le pare vero di passare le vacanze in compagnia di un uomo che la ama. Sono al mare, da qualche parte sulla riviera ligure. Ho ricevuto un sms in cui riferisce “qui è tutto stupendo” con un numero imprecisato di punti esclamativi. Audrey ha intrapreso il Cammino di Santiago e non ha lasciato detto quando torna. Non che ci tenga a saperlo, in verità. Imma è al mare, nella casa di famiglia. Con la famiglia. Al completo. Nipoti urlanti compresi. Mary Jean sta per partire per la riviera adriatica con il compagno e i figli di lei e di lui, all togheter. Una simpatica, rumorosa famiglia allargata. Aveva timore che qualcosa andasse storto, visto che la rispettiva prole non s’era presa granché in simpatia. Allegra soggiorna in un villone hollywoodiano sul  lago di Como. Modaiola e in perfetta forma com’è, ha corso il rischio di essere scambiata per la nuova fiamma di Clooney. Pedra è ancora al lavoro, ma solo perché si tratta di un nuovo incarico che le piace moltissimo. Pare che per il dopo stia progettando una fuga romantica con un tipo niente male.

E tu?

Io sono alla frutta. Faccio quel che posso, però. Stringo i denti per gli ultimi giorni di lavoro. Per far passare il tempo mi dedico anima e corpo alle mie ultime due passioni: la macchina del pane e le strisce depilatorie, trovate entrambe in offerta al super. Mi hanno preso la mano e sono espertissima, con l’una e le altre. Senza l’ombra di un pelo superfluo e persi un paio di chili grazie allo stress, sono pronta per le meritate vacanze. Anche se vincere la prova costume e subito dopo ingozzarsi di nutella e pan brioche appena sfornato con la MDP non ha prezzo. Comunque parto anch’io e spero di incontrare di nuovo la Thelma e la Louise che sono dentro di me, da qualche parte. Loro non deludono mai.

Elas tem cara de verão, mas é bom pelo menos esquenta esse inverno…

Adhaalath Party, which the MDP government has given a monopoly over the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, today issued a press release, advising all people to express their views within the tenets of Islam.

While the press release says that foreigners should be given visas only on the basis that they also respect this Constitutional requirement, this might be taken as a reference to Iranian-born British editor of MinivanNews.com, Maryam Omidi.

But having read the four articles on MinivanNews.com (dated 5 July 2009 | 8 July 2009 | 9 July 2009 | 15 July 2009) regarding the issue of the flogging of an 18-year-old woman for extra-marital sex, neither MinivanNews.com nor Maryam had ever expressed any of their own views — whether for or against flogging.

Rather, MinivanNews.com carried the views of Amnesty International, Maldives High Commissioner to the UK Dr. Farahnaz Faisal, MP Eva Abdulla, the President’s Office Press Secretary Mohamed Zuhair and Foreign Minister Dr. Ahmed Shaheed expressed following the flogging case.

So whose the real target of Adhaalath’s press release?

I think it will be in the best interests of both Adhaalath and the MDP government to clearly inform the Maldivian public of the limitations the government faces in implementing Sharia law in Maldives fully due to Maldives being a signatory to international treaties.

Succumbing to what is perceived as popular opinion — but which in fact is only the voice of some minority extremists — will not serve any purpose. In fact, if we retreat every time for the fear of being labeled “anti-Islamic”, soon these minority extremist elements will be running all the daily affairs of Maldives’ citizens.
