As one of the tasks on hand, I had to figure out the backlog which by definition is a running total of all ‘open’ incidents at the end of a day. The dimension table being used has all the incident details and related attributes such as status, priority, category, etc 

So, I created a caculated measure, named [Incident Backlog Count], based on the [Incident Count] measure in the measure group, as:

The recursion worked well and the MDX seemed to simulate the LastNonEmptyChild function, except that at the leaf level, all the values were getting populated – even for the empty members !   

For the life of me, I could not figure out the reason why this was happening, until I went in the Calculated Member Form Editor for the calculated measure and set the Additional Property Non Empty Behavior to the default measure [Incident Count] 

Here’s what Microsoft has to say about the Calculated Member Form Editor 

If the Non Empty Behavior property is blank, the calculated member must be evaluated repeatedly to determine if a member is empty. If the Non Empty Behavior property contains the name of a measure, the calculated member is treated as empty if the specified measure is empty.

I’ve been working with the other components of BI (SSIS, SSAS, SSRS, PPS) for the past 6 weeks and haven’t had much chance to work on the MOSS component.

Here is something I had to struggle with and hope you guys find it useful:
In the cube, one of the most common tasks is to do data analysis/comparison for different time periods and almost all the time, the reference point is NOW.
How did our numbers compare to a period in the past w.r.t. today/this month/this quarter, etc

Here are some MDX examples to solve 90% of those worries. Might come in handy if you want to create a named set based on such:

1. Current Month MDX
strtomember (“[Date Hierarchy].[Month].&[" + format(now(), "yyyyMM") + "]“))

2. Current Quarter MDX
The VBA function format() does not have a provision for returning the current quarter, so here is what you do – as above, you get to the current month and lookup its parent to get to the quarter. Now, the caveat is that your date hierarchy should be defined as such (Month to be a child of Quarter). In my case, it is Year -> Quarter -> Month -> Date
strtomember (“[Date Hierarchy].[Month].&[" + format(now(), "yyyyMM") + "]“).Parent)

It saved my day and hope it helps you.

MDX – Materials Docents en Xarxa es un repositorio cooperativo de las universidades catalanas que contiene materiales y recursos digitales resultantes de su actividad docente. La finalidad de MDX es aumentar la visibilidad y la difusión de la producción docente, contribuyendo a la innovación educativa, por un lado, y al acceso libre al conocimiento, por otro.

To reiterate: the Grand Cherokee is set to get a makeover for 2011, with multiple changes that will make the vehicle both more competitive and less Jeep. With the changes to the Grand Cherokee, and Chrysler’s management changes, ownership changes, and a basic look at Chrysler’s history, I felt it was needed to give my boss a list of alternatives to the Jeep.

Since the Jeep Grand Cherokee (from now on called GC) is not mainstream, like a Ford Explorer or Chevrolet Traverse (in the past, I would have said Trailblazer…I guess Chevrolet saw the writing on the wall, just like Ford did with their next model of the Explorer) nor as luxurious as a Mercedes or BMW, I felt it was needed to find alternatives that competed with the GC in price and features. I felt a V6 that was fairly powerful (or an optional V6 or V8) was needed, safety and technology features were needed, and it needed to have AWD/4WD as an option (of course). So, what did I suggest? Here goes:

Buick Enclave/GMC Acadia

So, of course, with my love and admiration for all things General Motors, these vehicles would be at the top of my list for an alternative to the GC. I know, I know – they are much larger than the GC. But, if you get a fully loaded (which my boss will) GC, then an Acadia or Enclave doesn’t look too bad. I lean toward the Buick, but then, I am a Buick man. In my opinion, other than the Cadillac Escalade, the Enclave is the most luxurious SUV in GM’s stable. Quiet, smooth ride, nice handling, competent engine, and a very nice interior, it is overlooked for the simple fact it’s not advertised and it’s a Buick. The Acadia is also well-received, and shares its platform and engine, and multiple interior bits with the Enclave. It doesn’t have the polish the Enclave has though.

Lincoln MKT

Being a GM fan doesn’t stop me from complimenting Ford on a job well done. Lincoln’s new lineup is very impressive, and I love the look and design of their new vehicles. The only one that needs something done now? The MKX, which to my eyes is a styling disaster. Back to the MKT: based on the Ford Flex (which itself was based on the Taurus X, which was based on the Volvo S80/XC90) it is a very quiet, luxurious ride just like the Enclave. Long wheelbases help these vehicles ride amazingly smooth, but it also means this vehicle is also longer than the GC. The MKT also has an interesting option that is available on almost all new Fords – an Ecoboost V6 with 355 horsepower. Not only does it offer decent fuel economy, but it has astounding power. With the GC offering a V8 with 360 hp, the MKT is able to compete against it fairly well, while getting significantly better fuel economy. While on that subject, what is up with Chrysler’s fuel economy? Why does every vehicle get worse mileage than comparable other vehicles in the segment?

Cadillac SRX

Based on two different platforms – a car (new Buick Lacrosse), and another crossover (Chevrolet Equinox/GMC Terrain) – the Cadillac SRX is a little heavy for both of its engine options, but is priced similar to the Jeep. About the same size as the GC, with plenty of room and style, the Cadillac seems like a nice fit. Technology and safety features abound, but I still feel like the Enclave is a better vehicle.

Acura MDX

Of course, some will say – how does an Acura compete with a Jeep? Well, it goes back to the image – not mainstream, but now BMW. In my opinion, Acura does not compete with BMWs and Mercedes’. They just aren’t as nice – just as technological, but not as nice. Very nice handling, huge feature set, nice engine. Competes well against the Jeep, just not in the same class as others, even Lexus. Of course, this is my opinion. Also, you don’t really see many Acura’s on the road in Oklahoma. So, this vehicle is included just based on the image it portrays.

Mazda CX-9

Longer than the GC, but with a similar feature set. I know most of you are saying: you are including mostly just crossovers. Fourth (fifth) vehicle on the list, and none of them are serious off-roaders like the Jeep! Settle down – the new Jeep will still be a strong off-roading machine, but not like the current model. Who really goes off-roading that often anyway? Its the image that’s important here, in my opinion – an SUV gives off that aura of “I will go anywhere I want, thank you very much.” Not many people know the difference – a crossover is perfect here. Much better fuel economy, better ride, a lot of creature comforts, just not able to seriously go off-road. AWD/4WD is more for show/snow than for getting dirty. (Also, how many people when pointing out SUV’s have you heard say “It’s a Jeep/Explorer”? Too many don’t know the difference in the vehicle in the first place).

Fun vehicles I listed

These are vehicles I considered “fun” because they are not well known, not advertised, newer, and kind of compete with the GC.

This year has been a big one for the Big Day Out. The event has sold out in all states(and New Zeland, which everyone knows is just an extenstion of Australia really) and an etra show has been added in Sydney for only the second time the festival’s history. Many people were expecting a big second announcement and there were rumours of bands such as Phoenix and Vampire Weekend.

Instead, the actual  second line-up is looking a little bit crap. I mean Jet. Seriously. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for boring bogan rock but does anybody actually care about them anymore?

I was in a training on multi dimensional language, called MDX, when the teacher asked how you would draw 5 or 6 dimension.  The class started talking about the thickness of lines and colors and other variations on how a two dimensional graph would have more dimensions.  After noodling on it for a while, I think there’s a better way:

First, graphing one dimension is easy.  You take a line and put a point on it.

One dimension is a line with a point on it (I've deliberatly avoided all color or line thichness to avoid confussion with the other class members suggestions.) The answer is: you draw another line and where it intersects. Each dimension is a point on a line. You can draw those lines in any way you want as long as you show the point where they intersect.Dimensions one through six

MDX és un projecte cooperatiu de les universitats participants (UB, UAB, UPC, UPF, UdG, UdL, URV, UOC, UVic i UJI), del Consorci de Biblioteques Universitàries de Catalunya (CBUC), del Centre de Supercomputació de Catalunya (CESCA), i compta amb el suport del Comissionat per a Universitats i Recerca de la Generalitat de Catalunya.

Conté materials i recursos digitals resultants de l’activitat docent que es porta a terme a les universitats membres. La seva finalitat és augmentar la visibilitat i la difusió de la producció docent de les institucions participants, tot contribuint a la innovació educativa, d’una banda, i a l’accés lliure al coneixement, de l’altra.

Els seus objectius són:

Aquesta iniciativa s’emmarca en la línia d’altres projectes cooperatius, d’aquestes mateixes institucions, per posar continguts d’accés lliure i gratuït a la xarxa, com ara  TDX (Tesis Doctorals en Xarxa),  RECERCAT (Dipòsit de la Recerca de Catalunya), RACO (Revistes Catalanes amb Accés Obert) i  MDC (Memòria Digital de Catalunya).

Além do utilitário-esportivo RDX, a Acura também modificou esteticamente o crossover MDX. Dirigido a um segmento superior, este modelo ganhou mudanças estéticas e novidades em equipamento, mas manteve o motor sem alterações. O visual segue a nova identidade visual da marca premium do grupo japonês para o mercado americano.A novidade mais notáivel é a grade, que identifica os Acura mais recentes. O para-choque também foi completamente redesenhado, com cortes mais retos e estilo mais agressivo. Atrás, o para-choque também foi modificado e as saídas de escape, antes ovaladas, agora têm desenho trapezoidal.

Entre os equipamentos, a novidade é que todas as versões do MDX saem com revestimento em couro de fábrica. Além dele, há teto solar, ar-condicionado de três zonas com controle de umidade, sistema hands-free com Bluetooth e aparelho de som com MP3, disqueteira para 6 CDs e oito alto-falantes.

O modelo ainda traz aletas atrás do volante, espelho central com tela para as imagens da câmera traseira – que auxilia em manobras em ré – e quadro de instrumentos iluminado por LEDs. Como opção, há controlador de velocidade adaptativo, navegador por GPS com HD de 60 Gb e amortecedores ativos.

O motor 3.7 VTEC V6, apesar de ser mencionado como novo, continua entregando potência de 300 cv, com tração nas quatro rodas. O torque passa de 37 kgfm. A transmissão é automática, de seis velocidades, o que garante certa elasticidae ao SUV.

Os preços da novidade não foram divulgados.

Acura đã đem đến cho mẫu SUV lớn nhất của mình – MDX – một hình ảnh tươi mới ở phiên bản 2010.

Được phát triển dựa trên những ý kiến đánh giá về hình thức xe TL và TSX, mẫu MDX có nhiều thay đổi ở đầu và đuôi xe, đồng thời được Acura cải tiến hệ thống treo và trang bị hộp số tự động 6 cấp mới.

Thiết kế đầu và mũi xe MDX 2010 vẫn dựa trên những đường nét của phiên bản cũ, nhưng bổ sung một số chi tiết ở các mẫu xe khác của. Thiết kế mũi xe nhọn đã trở thành đặc trưng của Acura giờ đây được làm mềm mại hơn một chút so với các mẫu khác. Bên cạnh đó là bộ la-zăng 19-inch mới và cụm đèn hậu sáng màu hơn.

Acura đã cải tiến Hệ thống giảm xóc chủ động của MDX nhằm tăng tính năng vận hành cho xe nhưng vẫn đảm bảo độ êm ái, tiện nghi.

Về nội thất, Acura đã thổi một luồng gió mới vào mẫu SUV này, với bộ ghế da có sưởi và thông gió (tùy chọn), vô-lăng thể thao chắc tay hơn, cần gạt số tay mới, cụm đồng hồ thiết kế mới, và sự nâng cấp tổng thể vật liệu.

Dưới nắp ca-pô xe MDX 2010 là động cơ 3.7L V6 công suất 300 mã lực và mô-men xoắn 270 lb-ft, giảm 5 lb-ft so với phiên bản 2009. Mức tiêu thụ nhiên liệu của xe đã được cải thiện giảm gần 1 lít/100km xuống còn 14,7 lít/100km đường phố và 11,2 lít/100km đường trường.

Trang bị tiêu chuẩn cho xe là hộp số tự động 6 cấp. Thông qua cần gạt số, người lái có thể chọn các chế độ lái tiêu chuẩn hoặc thể thao.

Mẫu Acura MDX đời 2010 sẽ có mặt trên thị trường vào khoảng tháng 9 tới.
