Ace of Base – All that she wants.

We all remember Swedish dance act Ace of Base. What a classic song. It is however hard to believe that in 1993 Ace of Base sold over 30 million albums, impressive considering the last Swedish band to do so were the likes of Roxette and ABBA. All That She Wants got to number one in the UK charts in 1993/4.

Mariah Carey- Hero

Mariah is the definition on the 90’s female singer. She had an amazing voice and some great pop songs, which were arguably her best. Which is why we’re struggling to understand how Hero only peaked at number 7 in the charts. This is an outrage, considering 2008’s X-Factor contestants got to number one with it. This is Mariah at her best!

R Kelly-Bump ‘n’ Grind
Oh R Kelly, remember him? It’s a shame that his career has taken such a nose dive in recent years when we remember that this was the kind of pop, R’n'B magic that he used to come out with. This was R Kellys first number one solo hit in the US, the first of many!

Salt-N-Pepa (ft En Vogue) -Whatta Man

It seems 1994 was a great year for R’nB in the UK. Salt-N-Pepa shot to fame in the 1980’s with the likes of Push It, which still to this day fills dance floors all over. But songs such as this were also highly successful but seem to have been forgotten. So we would like to remind you not only how great Salt-N-Pepa were at producing great dance records but just how good Whatta Man was.Featuring En Vogue (an early template of what Destiny’s Child came to be) this song only reached number 7 in the UK charts, an outrage we say.

Meat Loaf-I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That)

This Meat Loaf track lasted 11.58, nowadays for some this a running length of a whole album. Meat Loaf definately knew how to craft a well refined power ballad. A karaoke classic all over, everyone seems to know the words to this 1994 number one smash.

VERDICT:
9/10 Lead Salads

Not quite David Fincher’s best movie, but still, it’s freakin’ Fight Club. This here movie kicks a fine amount of ass.

Fight Club is about a humdrum guy whose humdrum life gets turned upside down after being seated next to one Tyler Durden on an otherwise humdrum flight for his humdrum job. Humdrum. Anyway, after his apartment accidentally blows up, he moves in with Tyler, they become quick pals, and then they form Fight Club after a night of heavy drinking – a nice little place for them and their fans to beat the living shit out of each other. So Fight Club gets really popular, it gives new meaning to this guy’s life, it also eventually turns into an even wackier little shindig called Project Mayhem, and then shit really gets crazy.

Point is, there aren’t too many movies out there like Fight Club.

I know I’m a bit behind the ball on this one what with last week being the tenth anniversary of this family favorite, but hey, glad to finally have an excuse to review this.

So, why does this movie kicks so much ass? Let’s start with director David Fincher.

Like I said, this isn’t his best movie – a well-earned title still held by Se7en – but it’s a close runner-up. The thing I like most about this guy is that not only is a really good storyteller and continually churns out one original, gritty movie after another, but, man, does he know how to use lighting to his advantage. This is one of those things you have to see for yourself to really get, and this isn’t really a characteristic that I’m prone to point out in movies, but the entire movie looks like it was filmed in a damp basement, and that is awesome. There’s stark contrasts between light and dark all around, it’s got this “Finchian” (Copyrighted 2009, Cut The Crap Industries) blend of sleek and dirty from the shiny glint of city buildings to the bloodied face of a maimed everyman, and everything about the way this sharp, grimy movie looks totally complements the dark story it’s telling.

Look, when you see a David Fincher movie, you know it’s a David Fincher movie. Not to belabor the point, but I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the dude is one of the best working directors out there today and he sure knows how to make a movie look good.

And hey, guess what, there’s a solid little cast here, too! Well I’ll be!

I’ve always been a big fan of Edward Norton, and while this isn’t the best thing he’s ever done either, he still plays a really good protagonist as our humdrum anti-hero, Cornelius. He probably would have been more memorable if it weren’t for Brad Pitt and his eight-pack abs as Tyler Durden. I’m slowly coming over to the mindset that Brad’s actually a good actor after his turn Inglourious Basterds recently, and even though there’s a whole lot of eye candy going on with him in this movie, the fact of the matter is that Tyler Durden is one hell of a character. Most of the credit is probably due to the script in this case, but still, hard to knock Brad this time around.

Helena Bonham Carter is also in it as Ed Norton’s main squeeze, Marla, and boy howdy is she creepy as hell.

And Meat Loaf is in it, too, and he’s good, and not just because his name’s freakin’ Meat Loaf.

It’s not often that adaptations end up being better than the source material, but after trucking through Chuck Palahniuk’s novel a couple years ago, I’m still sold on Fincher’s take. Still not really sure if there’s a moral to the madness, but whatever, Fight Club is one wild ride that’ll have you hooked right from the opening shot. Lots of memorable scenes, has one awesome twist going for it, a real biting sense of humor that just adds to an already terribly well-written script, and even though it might be a little too gnarly for some, it’s pretty darn rewarding for all you postmodern fanboys out there.

Great script, great director, people making soap and punching out Jared Leto. Sounds like a winner, alright.

I don’t have a name for this dish yet. If anyone has suggestions after reading this, please let me know…

I had a taste for spaghetti – kinda. As I started to look for ingredients needed, I realized we only had a small, 4 oz can of tomato sauce.

Then I thought about meat loaf since we had potatoes and I could make masked potatoes. For some reason that just did not feel exactly right but I wanted the taste…..I wanted something with pasta and cheese….I came up with what you see in the picture! It tasted better the 2nd day!

Alternatives: this dish could be fixed with no meat, shredded chicken, ground turkey – I fixed it with ground beef – I think I will try shredded chicken next time. I would also add about 1/2 cup of zucchini as well to add volume and flavor – especially if I was fixing this with no meat…

This will take about 1 hour to fix.

__________________________________________________________________________________________

Ingredients:

1 lb ground beef (lean)

whole wheat penne pasta

8 oz can of diced tomatoes with garlic & herb

4 oz can of tomato sauce

2 cups of shredded cheese

5 cloves of garlic (need about 1 tablespoon minced)

fresh spinach

1/4 cup of bbq sauce

1/4 cup of chili sauce

1/2 cup of bell pepper

1/2 cup of onion

1/4 tsp of red pepper flakes

2 T of olive oil

Non Stick Spray

3/4 cup of fresh mushrooms

1 package of meat loaf seasoning

Seasonings: italian, thyme, old bay, seasoned salt, fresh ground pepper,

Process:

In a large pot saute’ bell pepper, onions, and garlic in olive oil for about 2 minutes. Add ground beef or whatever meat you want to use. If you use chicken, boil it and shred it first. Brown your meat and season it.

While the meat is cooking, boil your pasta until it is almost done. When it is ready, drain and rinse with cool water, set it aside.

Pre-heat the oven at 350 degrees.

In a bowl, mix the tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, bbq sauce and chili sauce.

After the meat is cooked, add the sauce mixture to the pot with the meat in it, and cook for about 15 minutes on a medium heat stirring occasionally. Add 3/4 of the cheese, and mushrooms. You can also add parmesan cheese as well. I used a cheddar/jack mixture of cheese and parmesan. Mix the fresh spinach into the meat sauce AFTER has finished cooking, just before adding the pasta.

Add the pasta to the pot, mix well and turn the pot off. Spray a glass dish with non-stick spray. Pour the ingredients from the pot into the glass dish. Sprinkle with the remainder of cheese. Bake for 30 -45 minutes at 350 degrees.

Serve with garlic bread and salad…Yummmy

Der unten anzuschauende Song heißt “objects in the rear view mirror may appear closer than they are”. Toller Song.

She seems to have an air of rock opera about her that reminds me of Meat Loaf.

Catching up on Carrie Brownstein’s Monitor Mix blog at NPR Music, I came across the ubiquitous

Catching up on Carrie Brownstein’s Monitor Mix blog at NPR Music, I came across the ubiquitous “10 worst songs” post that any self-hatingrespecting music blogger has to post. One of the songs she mentioned is the one-hit wonder Eiffel 65’s “I’m Blue.” Now, I hadn’t heard that song in ages, but when I clicked the YouTube play button, it brought a smile to my face. Obviously, I don’t think it’s one of the worst/most annoying songs ever.

It does bring to mind George Carlin’s quip in his Seven Words You Can Never Say On Television: “No bad words. Bad thoughts, bad intentions. And words.” I happen to hate Meat Loaf’s “Paradise by the Dashboard Light”, but I know there are some people who don’t consider a wedding reception complete without it. It’s not a bad song if it’s the song you’re looking for at that moment. Fans of three-person Genesis can’t make it through “The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway” (the song or the album), and fans of Peter Gabriel-era Genesis think “I Can’t Dance” is an abomination.

However, for it to be a bad song, you cannot be able to relate it to a bad event in your life, or else this statement would be OK, “Sgt. Pepper’s stinks because I heard it when my fiancée and I were breaking up.” Whether a song is bad is not related to whether I like the song. I can’t listen to Wagner, I’m much more a Brahms-ite, but I realize that in the pantheon of great music, Wagner beats Brahms hands down.

Razorlight: Burberry Blue Eyes
Men ibland hittar man guldkorn.

Christian Kjellvander: Poppies and Peonies
(Ps. Det betyder “vallmor och pioner”!)

Radiohead: High and Dry

Pink: Dear Mr. President
The Killers: Human
Älskar när publiken jublar åt “what kind of father might hate his own daughter if she were gay”.

Brainpool: We Aim to Please

I’m such a fake.

Tori Amos: Talula
Från hennes “barockplatta”, Boys for Pele.

Meat Loaf: Bat out of Hell
Jag älskar episka låtar! (Episk i ordets ursprungliga bemärkelse. Inte den nya internetkidzdefinitionen.)

Sahara Hotnights: Visit to Vienna

Ok its crazy that I had the most difficult time finding a meatloaf recipe that didn’t ask for

Ok its crazy that I had the most difficult time finding a meatloaf recipe that didn’t ask for everything in my pantry. With the help of a few friendly suggestions, I think I’ve found the perfect meat loaf recipe for dinner tonight.

So I made this tonight for dinner and it turned out amazing. Paired it with a baked russet potato.

Must do it again.

Ingredients:

1 to 2 pounds ground beef

1 egg

1 tablespoon Worcestershire

1 chopped onion (I used 1 cup chopped frozen onions)

1 chopped green pepper(I used 1 cup shopped frozen pepper)

1/2 cup seasoned bread crumbs

1/2 cup ketchup for topping, plus 1/4 cup to incorporate into the loaf

1 teaspoon dried thyme leaves

1/4 teaspoon garlic powder or salt

1/4 teaspoon pepper

1 teaspoon seasoning salt

2 tablespoon smoked BBQ sauce (for topping)

Instructions:

Crumble ground beef in a large bowl. In a smaller bowl combine eggs, Worcestershire sauce, and 1/4 cup ketchup. Add thyme leaves, pepper, garlic powder, seasoning salt. Pour over beef then use hands to incorporate the ingredients.

Add onions, peppers and mix again, then add bread crumb and mix it in well.

Place in a loaf pan and create into desired loaf form.

Bake for 1/2 an hour at 400 degrees. Lower temperature to 350 and continue baking for 1 hour.

For Topping

15 Minutes before the loaf is completely done, you will need to add the topping.

Instructions for topping

Mix 1/2 cup ketchup and 2 tablespoon of BBQ sauce then spread evenly on the top of the loaf.

PLEASE NOTE: The loaf should be cooked until it reaches an internal temperature of 160 degrees. It depends on your oven you might have to cook your loaf a bit longer

On Law & Order: SVU:

After a crime scene photo of a murdered teenage girl rapidly becomes an Internet phenomenon, the police initiate an investigation with the victim’s father, Greg Dunne. When Greg points the detectives towards Martin Gold, his daughter’s suspicious therapist, it turns out that Gold’s alibi is airtight. While Fin and Munch are busy tracking down the girl’s stolen credit card, Dr. Melinda Warner and Detective Elliot Stabler discover that one of Gold’s other patients has broken into the morgue. The case takes an unexpected turn, revealing a sinister prescription for murder at the hands of unlikely suspects.

I am still sticking to the belief that SVU is the best Law & Order on the air today. It’s a shame that the original isn’t as good as it used to be.

On Eastwick this evening:

Roxie is determined to fulfill Chad’s last wish, if she can figure out what it is; Joanna deals with her lingering questions about the kidnapping ordeal; Kat realizes that Bun’s old friend (Cybill Shepherd) may have the answers she needs.

Perhaps we will finally get some interesting info fro Cybill Shepherd’s character’s turbin?

Tonight on Ghost Hunters:

The West is about to get a whole lot wilder with special guest Eddie McClintock from Warehouse 13.

I love when TAPS has guest investigators! Although no one is going to ever compare to the great Meatloaf!

Then on The Middle:

Axl accidentally breaks down the front door and Mike insists he fix it; Frankie may be forced to wear a dog suit.

This show is surprisingly relateable. It’s really a nice sitcom for ABC to be airing!

Next on Modern Family:

The family comes out to support Manny’s newfound interest, fencing; Phil is determined to find Luke’s hidden talent.

I’m glad to see that Al Bundy has work nowadays. Plus this show is the only thing like Arrested Development on the air!

And on Cougar Town tonight:

Jules reluctantly accepts a date with an older man just to get out of the house; Grayson makes a bet with Jules that she can’t spend a day by herself.

I hope that I am not the only person watching this sitcom, it would be a shame for it to be cancelled.

And finally on the season premiere of Nip/Tuck:

Christian struggles to understand a patient with big anger-management issues. Sean and Christian learn how Matt is earning an income, despite his attempts to keep it hidden from his family. Teddy arranges a camping trip with Sean, Annie and Conor in order to ease family tensions.

Now, I don’t know about you, but I don’t trust Teddy. I wonder why… Oh yeah! She’s a psychopath with a false identity who seems to be hellbent on killing Sean and his kids! Sean needs to wake up and realize something is up with that woman!

We’re back, thanks to the complete lack of public acclaim, with the much derided Best Of British Part 2. Mebbe this isn’t the best time to be plugging something with that title, but if it makes Nick Griffin a better man, then it’s time well spent.

With that in mind I’m already regretting the first track from Warfare – “Burn The King’s Road”. Now I’ve been down the king’s Road, and it seemed comparatively pleasant compared to other streets in London. Me, I’d be burning Streatham, but perhaps Warfare knew something I don’t.

Originally the B-side to their Neat Records debut 7″ “This Machine Kills”, Warfare plugged away gamely for most of the eighties, sticking with Neat, long after Neat meant anything to anyone. Naturally, the hailed from Newcastle, and if I tell you that they were formed by Evo, ex drummer with the Angelic Upstarts, then I think you will know exactly how good they were. They also featured the legend that is Wurzel, in his pre-Motorhead days as well as Mantas (the Venom fella). At different times obviously.

MP3 one – Warfare – Burn The Kings Road

Next up is Jaguar. Now I liked Jaguar, especially their “Axe Crazy” single, which came out on Neat in 1982.

Sadly by the time their “Power Games” LP came out, it was 1983 and the horse had long since bolted. I remember seeing them opening the show for Girlschool in 1984(?), and they were still pretty impressive. They packed it in a year or so later, but got back together about ten years ago, continuing in one for or another right up till today. This track doesn’t seem to appear on any other release.

MP3 two – Jaguar – (Nights Of) Long Shadow

This installment comes to an end with Emerson. One of the single worst bands I ever saw play live. It was at the Hard Rock Cafe (pre franchise), which used to be upstairs in the Edinburgh Playhouse, and is now a swanky restaurant. I saw some great gigs there – Twisted Sister and Raven spring to mind, as well as the legendary Spider. But, oh dear. Emerson were absolutely awful. I suppose their brand of wannabee US AOR was not what beered up Scotch teenage metal fans wanted to hear, but even now, this is pretty dire.

I seem to recall the band was led by the Emerson brothers, and that they released on solitary 7″. This track wasn’t good enough to get on the B-side.

Fact fiends may be interested to know that Stu (the guitarist) ended up performing on albums by Meat Loaf and Bonnie Tyler! And by glancing over my right shoulder, I can see a poster for a Tyketto gig at the Newcastle Mayfair in 1994, when they were supported by Mrs Loud aka Lorraine Crosby, the partner of Stu who sang lead on “I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That)”. You never thought I was going there, did you.

Now, I know you’re pretty blown away right now. But wait, there’s more. The singer in Emerson was a guy called Sam Blewitt. Not a great name. So he changed it to Sam Blue. He went on to sing with (deep breath) Axis, L. A. Secrets, Paul Samson’s Empire, Ya Ya, Ultravox, GTS, and Burns Blue. But, and prepare to gasp, he is most famous for being the vocalist on The Streets’ chart-topping single “Dry Your Eyes”! It’s true! Although for me, his two Song For Europe entries are what mark him out (in 1996 as part of the duo Esseness with the song “I Never Knew” and 1997 as a solo artist with the song “For The Life You Don’t Yet Know”). He didn’t win.

I’ve dropped enough big names for now;
MP3 three – Emerson – Maybe Someday

But here’s a pic of Mrs Loud in her Meat Loaf days.

Meat Loaf, Rock Music legend. Meat Loaf, lead vocalist on Ted Nugent’s 1976 Free For All album

Meat Loaf, Rock Music legend. Meat Loaf, lead vocalist on Ted Nugent’s 1976 Free For All album. Meat Loaf, a guest investigator on Ghost Hunters. Meat Loaf playing the role of Eddie in the cult film classic - The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Oh, heck, I could make quite the list of Meat Loaf career achievements here. I have not even touched on awards, records sold or concert receipts. Meat Loaf has been a lifetime favorite Rock/Hard Rock vocalist for me. I get all happy to see Meat Loaf in the limelight, no matter what the platform may be. I have said it before, Meat Loaf just seems like a down to earth guy that has continuously risen above the star status of plasticity.

I have never been a fan of using vintage Rock songs for commercial purposes. Attaching a legendary song of any Rock or Metal Music genre, to a product for the sole purpose of marketing and selling such product, just takes away from the original Rock spirit of the song. That is my Metal opinion. Step in A-1 Steak Sauce, um, please. You see, I witnessed the other night, while watching whatever on television… Meat Loaf in an A-1 Steak Sauce commercial. Yes I did. Meat Loaf… steak sauce. (I think this commercial appeared during the Yankees vs. Angels game 6 playoff game on Fox). All I know is this commercial came on late, therefore my Metal memory has a few cobwebs. Meat Loaf looked fine, just as he looked on a recent episode of Ghost Hunters. In this A-1 Steak Sauce commercial, he actually looked like a dude you would approach at a family or company picnic… asking him where the cold beer is hidden.

The classic Meat Loaf song – I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That), is heard during this A-1 Steak Sauce commercial. Plus, Meat Loaf is shown singing along to this song, apparently showing his affection towards A-1 Steak Sauce. Meat Loaf is also shown wearing a bath robe and bunny slippers too. Yup. Hey, I’m all for a free enterprise, this is America. I also believe in the semi-fabulous words of wisdom… live and let live. Metal be damned though, I will forever now attach this great Meat Loaf song to a stinking bottle of steak sauce. The marriage of commercial products and my favorite Rock songs have an imbedding power within my Metal mind, this has always been the case my entire life. Once the attachment of a Rock song and it’s commercially related product occurs… that’s it. I cannot shake the connection loose once I hear such song(s) again.

There are many positives to be explored with this Meat Loaf meets A-1 Steak Sauce commercial just the same. Three quick positives come to my Metal mind: One – Meat Loaf is in the public eye, where he rightfully should be. Two – Meat Loaf is working and getting paid. Three – I will now and forever link and associate the A-1 Steak Sauce bottle that sits atop many restaurant tables, to a Rock Music icon whose voice has entertained and inspired me for decades. Reaching for that bottle of A-1 Steak Sauce will never be the same for me again. Long live Meat Loaf.

* I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That) appears on the 1993 Meat Loaf album – Bat Out of Hell ll: Back Into Hell. This fantastic song was written by Jim Steinman.
