And it’s finally done!  Taken a lot longer than planned due to unforeseen crippling pain, but I’m delighted to have this completed.  The next genre I’ll be providing a countdown of favourites for is Shounen anime……but that won’t be for a while yet.

Anyway time for my personal #1 mecha series……its not the best show on the list, but its my favourite (My current Character of the Week was a huge clue!) ……Disclaimer for the previous post applies here too!

1. Code Geass:

A predictable outcome really – I have an irrational love of Code Geass.  I do know that its majorly flawed and highly over-rated, but can’t seem to find it in me to care!  I just love Geass to bits – the characters, the animation, the music and the voice acting; to me its got the whole package to provide some Fabulous entertainment.

Season one stands out in my mind as a rare show that my brother and I watched together – normally I watch stuff and recommend it to him later if I think he’ll like it, with Geass I watched episode one and insisted my brother watch it with me immediately after!  It just grabbed me from the very 1st episode and I very quickly became a dedicated fan.  Of course R2 was an entirely different kettle of fish; a complete trainwreck by the end – pulling plot-twists out of nowhere, abandoning interesting plotlines and leaving plotholes big enough to lose Jupiter in…..however in spite of all this I still highly rate R2 - it was a trainwreck, but my god was it a Fabulous one!  You can not deny that the series wasn’t entertaining – week in week out I was captivated by the world of Code Geass and I sorely miss it now it’s over.

Quite a lot of my fangirlism for Geass stems from one character – Lelouch Lamperouge/Vi Britannia.  I love characters like him!  An anti-hero genius on a personal quest for vengeance, Lelouch was a fascinating character to watch – immediate parallels are drawn to Light from Death Note; but Lelouch doesnt seem to lose touch with his humanity despite his god-like power of Geass the way Light does by the end of Death Note.  Of course Lelouch wasnt the only character I loved, I have a soft spot for C.C., Lloyd and Schneizel too – really the whole cast is filled with memorable characters.

In terms of animation, Geass comes from Sunrise and as a result it’s very, very pretty (although there is the occasional inconsistency).  It majorly helps that the character designs are so fecking pretty it hurts – CLAMP provided those, and as we may have gathered from glancing at my blog – I’m a big fan of CLAMPs artwork.  Of course CLAMP do love reusing designs and as result Lelouch looks remarkably similar to Kamui from X/1999 and Suzaku bares more than a passing resemblance to Syaoran from Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle   However to me this just adds to Code Geass’s appeal (I did say its an irrational love )

The mecha designs are fantastic – Sunrise know their mecha, but manage to make the Knightmare Frames in Code Geass different enough from their Gundam designs to stop cries of reused designs……..although admittedly as more and more Frames were introduced they clearly borrowed some ‘inspiration’ from Gundam .  The idea of putting the mecha on glorified roller skates made for really interesting land based battles – of course they eventually had the battles take to skies when they ran out of fresh ideas for land fights…….but I’m not complaining about that!  I love action scenes and the battles in Code Geass did not disappoint at all!

Mention has to be made of the other reason I love Lelouch to bits – his seiyuu.  I’m a bit of a Jun Fukuyama fangirl and this role was his standout performance – Lelouch’s speeches and maniacal laughter just wouldnt be the same if it wasnt Fukuyama delivering them (so can’t have the english dub anywhere near me as a result).  The rest of the cast is just as good – Takahiro Sakurai’s turn as Suzaku (the character I love to hate) displayed a lot of range and Yukana was excellent as C.C. – her slightly condescending and matter-of-fact tone just made the character IMO.  I could actually go on forever about the cast of Geass, but shall restrain myself!

Onto the soundtrack – lots of OPs and EDs used over the course of the two series, and I generally loved them all – yes even the godwaful ALI Project managed to produce songs I can actually listen to without wishing to claw my ears off; a major achievement (everything becomes better when attached to Geass – just ask Pizza Hut!).  The BGM was also brilliant – I’ve got the soundtracks downloaded

So yeah, Code Geass is my #1 mecha show in spite of all its faults.  For me entertainment value is paramount and Geass provided me with a veritable truckload of entertainment when it was airing.  It’s a show I don’t see myself ever getting tired of – similar to Gundam Wing in that respect; Geass has enough depth to keep me satisfied, but doesnt get caught up in its own self-importance or really present any deep meaningful issues – it’s just fun and easy to watch…….and its pretty which helps alot in my book!

Gurren Lagann -

One of the most important and skillful parts of this brotherly relationship is, I think, that it does not come off as gay. Now don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against the gay community (although they can be over-exposed), but our media seems a bit confused on the whole issue. There is this fear of male characters appearing gay by being too close to another man. This fear becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy by causing male-to-male character relationships to be less than sincere, which often leads them to come off as closet-gay. This can stem from the director, from the writer or from the actors themselves.

It stems from an insecurity in masculinity which permeates our culture. People seem to have a hard time understanding how different the love a man feels for another man is from the love he feels for a woman, and this mix-up can lead to confusion on the orientation of characters.

Maybe it is because of the age different between Simon and Kamina, or maybe because they have clear female lovers, or because of the presence of a clearly gay man, but I don’t think so. I think it comes from a sense of security the men have in their own masculinity and an understanding on the part of the writers of what it means for men to become as brothers. They are what they are, and that is brothers. No fear of questions about whom they love comes up.

You can love someone without wanting to sleep with them, but this is something many men seem to have forgotten, and in being afraid of being gay they make themselves seem gay. Once this concept was understood, such as the way men of ancient times truly and utterly loved their king, but not in the same way they loved their wife.

Only by freeing men to feel free with their own emotions can we allow them to truly love one another as brothers, as well as creating more understanding for homosexual men by making men more comfortable with themselves.

Gurren Lagann shows how men can truly love one another in the fashion of brothers. Dedication, caring, helping one another to grow, all this combines with the eternal male thirst for competition to allow men to drive one another to greatness, as brothers.

Next time I will take a final look at the series as a whole and explore its overall image and sense of masculinity.

Ok so this is the beginning of the end for my personal Top Ten mecha series – the top 2!  It should be ridiculously easy to guess what these shows are if you’ve ever looked at my Anime Planet account   But lets pretend everyone’s clueless shall we!?  I couldnt stop myself and as a result this is a touch on the overlong side……to soften the blow a bit #2 and#1 will get their own posts.  As always I’ll try to avoid spoilers (yay vagueness!) so onto my #2!

2. Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann:

Ah Gurren-Lagann, otherwise known as awesome in its purest form!  I nearly missed this epic ride as I completely dismissed the show when I was looking at preview material – so I didnt jump on the bandwagon until about the time episode 5 was airing…….and have been a committed fan of the show ever since!   Its one of those rare series that had me LOLing/ on the edge of my seat/ cheering/ on the verge of tears (all within the space of a single episode occasionally) and when it was all over I was completely satisfied.  Gurren-Lagann is an experience that everyone should have

What I loved about TTGL is that its crazy and OTT, but its got alot of heart.  The world setting is ridiculous and impossible to take seriously most of the time, and the characters that inhabit this world are larger than life – much as I adore Kamina, if I ever encountered anyone like him in real life, I’d probably run a mile (although even then his burning manly spirit would give me sunburn! ).  Given the central theme of the show is that nothing is impossible if you put in enough spirit (although having a nifty transforming robot the size of a galaxy helps too apparently), Gurren-Lagann is just a very positive and fun show – its impossible to be depressed after watching an episode (well with the exception of ep 8 that is) as the manic energy generated just does not allow any negativity!  I find myself watching random episodes if I’ve had a particularly crappy day – its like my happy drug

One of the major things that endeared me to TTGL is the animation.  Originally when I was looking at preview material I was put off my the bright primary colours and dismissed the series as a kiddie show and moved on.  It wasnt until I took note of the positive reaction to the show on other blogs that I decided to actually give it a go.  Gainax’s animation on this show is extremely striking  and immediately identifiable.  The action scenes are nothing short of breathtaking in their explosive glory and the scale continues to grow until the climax where fights are on a galactic scale!  The character designs are quite original and visually appealing (if fairly fanservicey…..looking at you Yoko!), costume design was also excellent – capes and huge sunglasses are always good choices Also liked the many and varied Beastmen character designs.

The mecha was pretty original looking too.  Called Gunmen, these robots can only be described as faces with arms and legs – oh and they’re are powered by the characters pure awesomeness!  It’s comical to watch them moving about in the early part of the series, they’re very ungainly outside of battle, but brilliant to watch fight.  Simon’s Lagann is of course special – even though its tiny it packs a punch and its power is unlimited (as ony the main characters machine can be!)  It was really fantastic fun to see how the mecha evolved and grew over the course of the show – seriously taking the idea of ridiculous power-ups to their illogical extreme!  Say it with me now – ‘GIGAAA DRIIILLLL BREEAAKEER!!!!!!!!’

Oh the music!  Have to mention that – the OP and EDs were fantastic, but its the inspirational ‘Libra me from Hell’  with its chant of ‘Row Row, Fight Da Powa!!’ that really sums up the feel of TTGL for me.  Everytime I hear it I smile – it’s just genius.  The soundtrack in general is exceptional.  The voice acting is the icing for me – highlights are Katsuyuki Konishi’s hotblooded speeches as Kamina, Marina Inoue’s wonderful portrayal of Yoko and Tetsuya Kakihara’s wonderful range as Simon’s character evolves and grows up – it’s a fabulous ensemble cast.

Wow, I’ve gone on a bit :|  You’ll have to forgive me – its hard to stop once I start on about something I really liked!  Needless to say I feel that TTGL is an amazing series and urge any of you that havent had the absolute joy of watching it, to do so as soon as you can!

My #1 will be up tomorrow – can’t type any more tonight

Official pictures of the SIC Kamen Rider Kabuto action figure can be seen in the Amiami.com link above. It appears that it features only Cast-Off mode and Hyper Cast-Off mode. It also includes KR Decade’s sword as well as Kabuto’s alternate form from the KR Decade series: Kabuto Form Ride? Does this mean the next KR action figures that will show up in the SIC line that were featured in the KR Decade series will also have the alternate forms from the said series? And maybe a Decade sword and Decade Henshin belt?

Get this: I ordered Tetsujin 28-gou from RightStuf, and Dai-Guard from the Amazon marketplace. Today Dai-Guard came in the mail: In a RightStuf box. So really had I known they were both coming from the same place I could have saved some money on postage.

So in the aftermath of Dai-Guard’s last epic battle, the company is flooded by insurance claims on all the cars that were consumed in the battle. Apparently being saved from alien invaders wasn’t enough for them. This is only the start of the red tape however, as lots more stuff I don’t entirely understand comes their way. Alas, another Heterodyne is spotted and Dai-Guard is launched once again: One pilot short.

Spiffy:

• Despite the aura of parody this series seems to have, I’m convinced that the events here pretty much WOULD happen should a real giant robot be created.
• This series is pretty hilarious. One character runs away because he doesn’t wish to be piloting the Dai-Guard, but returns because he can’t stand watching how badly the remaining 2 pilots are doing without him.
• Also the Hotblooded character learns that Hotblood is more or less useless if you have no idea how to control your mecha.
• Improvised rocket punch = Hilarious and awesome.
• Hints at an underlying conspiracy as a team makes off with a piece of the Heterodyne from the Rocket Punch.

Iffy:

• The animation quality here and there is a bit ‘eh’.

Oh man, that improvised Rocket Punch was incredibly awesome. It’s made even more hilarious as you have half the crowd cheering at the Dai-Guard’s victory and half screaming in terror at all the collatoral damage which will inevitably lead to more paperwork. I’m not entirely sure how they’re going to make a whole series out of this, but that’s yet to be seen.

I bet GGG never had to do paperwork.

I’ve been playing video games from Atari and up, my hands a gnarled mess of arthritis from too many hours of Sonic and Metroid. I’ve been watching anime starting waaaaaaay back with the Dragin Ball Z/Sailor Moon power hour on Saturdays (Vegeta and Sailor Jupiter = hottest couple ever!).  Anyway, over the years, I have begun to glean things from my two favorite past-times. The lessons learned which have probably stunted my social development by a couple years have stuck with me and now, I pass on that knowledge to you, free of charge.

LESSON 1: The Younger and more mentally unstable the person, the greater they’ll be at piloting giant robots.

From the Gundam series to Neon Genesis Evangelion. it appears that the only people capable of controling machines that can literally destroy an entire planet are teenaged boys and girls who would require some benevolent fusion of Oprah and Dr. Drew to treat them. Take Evangelion’s Asuka Langley. This boisterous gal, at six years old, walks in on her mother who recently commited suicide after completing work on an experimental giant robot. Things go from bad to just loony when thay same girl appears several years later piloting the exact same robot her mother died working on. Damn. Oh, and did I forget to mention she is racked with extremely high levels of perfectionism and egoism that causes her to throw herself blindly into situation withuot the least bit of regard to her own life in an attempt to gain acceptance and love from a 30+ year old man? No? Well, there ya go.

Moving on, let’s take a gander at the main character of Gundam Wing Heero Yuy. This boy was raised since birth to be the perfect military soldier, ya know, being able to fire guns, run several miles at a time, kill a guy with a pen-cap and gum – the usual. But aside from all that, he was still a young man with the youthful exuberance of such. That is, until one mission where he had to sabotage a Mobile Suit base by planting explosives throughout the compound late at night and setting it off. This, in and of itself went off without a hitch…except when one of the giant robotic suits came tumbling down in a ball of flames right smack-dab into an apartment complex, killing everyone inside (including a little girl and her puppy who he befriended the day before – FAIL). Suffice it to say, this stuck with him…even after the facility he worked for put him under even more intensive training to purge him of “weakness” i.e. emotions. So, Heero is now an emotionless soldier who later aqcuires a Gundam (i.e. super-powerful robot) that can fire a gun that can destroy and an entire planet…riiiiiiight.

I’m not entirely sure why this is the case, but I for one would be a little more comfortable if the person handling a giant robot of destruction had at least a little less mental problems than me (though, if these anime series are any evidence, I’d be an excellent candidate to pilot a Gundam).

Mostly SIC updates. Definitely would want to own the KR Kabuto SIC. That Chogokin Drossel looks interesting though.

As for the MG GN-X, that’s an interesting release. I kind of expected MG treatment on some other mecha from the Gundam 00 series but I guess Bandai figured it’s the right time to release and antagonist mobile suit as a Master Grade release.

A háború gyerek szemmel.

Na, ez is olyan sorozat, hogy keveset lehet leírni, anélkül, hogy lespoilerezném, de megpróbálom.

Ez is egy az első Gundam idejében játszódó, Side stori. Csupán hat részes és az eredeti alkotó Tomino nem vett rész ennek a sorozatnak az elkészítésében, de szerencsére ezt nem rontja a minőséget.

Plot: Időszámításunk UC 0079, December. Az Egy Éves Háború a végéhez közeledik. Egy Zeon kommandó csapat, a Cyclops megtámad egy Föld Federációs bázist a Déli Sarkon. A hadművelet sikeres, de egy emberük meghalt. Ez a csapat, most új munkát kap: A hatos Sideban, ami elvileg semleges kolónia, rejteget egy Gundamet. El kell pusztítaniuk értelem szerűen és ehhez egy újonc katonát is kapnak. De fura módon egy Side hatosi általános kisiskolás, Alfred is belekeveredik a zűrzavarba.

Először is: Igen a főszereplő tényleg Alfred. Ezt elsőre, kicsit hülye ötletnek hangzik, de végül egész hihetőnek oldották meg. Ez a sorozat a plotra és a karakter interakcióra épít és ebben szempontból jól teljesít. A Zeon más oldalát is meglátjuk, ebben a sorozatban, ami egész nagy plusz. Két negatívum van: Chris, ahhoz képest, hogy elvileg fontos szerepe van, ehhez képes kicsit lapos a karaktere a szegénykének. A másik a befejezés, bár nem rossz, de sablonosra sikeredett. Mondjuk zavaró, hogy így fejezték be, mert ugye rövid. De a történet így is jó és ez a lényeg.

Harc alig van, így fölösleges beszélni. Aki hagyományos Gundam sorozatra számít, azt nagyot fog csalódni. (mondjuk, van új robot, de alig van akcióban.)

Tálalás: 1989-es a cucc, ahhoz képest jól néz ki. Az OST nem rossz, Japánul néztem, így nem tudom kommentálni, de az angol szinkronról is jót halottam, szóval tök mindegy, hogy milyen nyelven nézed meg.(jól halottam, hogy David Hayter benne van az angol verzióban?O_O)Az OP és az ED……nem rossz, de kicsit kilógnak a sorozat egészéből.

Na először nem tudtam, hogy tetszeni fog-e. Azt hittem, hogy unalmas lesz. De szerencsére menet közben változott, annak ellenére, hogy nem éppen akció dús sorozat. Bár szerintem a 08Th MS Team, jobb Gundam sorozat, de ezt is megéri megnézni, a franchise kedvelőinek. Amúgy önmagában is élvezhető, de jobb, ha az első sorozatod végignézed.(amúgy kapsz pár plusz infót is)

But when it comes to gaming, Steel Battalions is one of those special moments in your gaming life that will stay with you forever. Trust me, if you get the chance, please try it out. But do it alone. let me explain…

Set up your console and controller. Dim the lights. Get one of those head torches and put it on now. OK, boot the game and choose the campaign mode. Read the intro movie.

Now let’s get serious!

The whole point of this game for me is the start-up sequence. The first few times you need the manual for this, and the designers thought of everything. Like the little bag you get on a transatlantic flight, the SB box is full of goodies, with the manual being the greatest gaming peripheral of all time (IMO). Printed on the outside to look like a haggard old tome, it explains the start-up procedure for your mech. This is pure gaming nerd gold. You must power up in the correct sequence or the main power won’t fire. She’s a tricky animal to master, but your careful geeky patience is well worth it. The engine hums into life, so you grab the huge array of controls and head for the battlefield…

…ok, so then you usually die a lot, and there are no saves or lives, but thats the reality of mech combat soldier!

To be honest, this is one of those rare games that is mostly about the physical experience, much like Rockband and the GH series. It’s about what happens in the room. If you can play the game, enjoy the visceral pleasures, but do me a favor; don’t just have a quick go. Savour this one, it’s a classic in its own right. Just like those old VR games in the Troc basement…

Aaaaaaand Keita does it again. This time in HGUC fashion. This is his custom HGUC Hi-Nu Gundam HWS. You probably remember seeing those three letters at the end of the Nu Gundam designation.

I honestly don’t recall seeing a Hi-Nu Gundam with HWS parts. HWS parts were originally used on the Nu Gundam. And for those who played SRW, this was a nifty feature because it gave the Nu Gundam unit a double life ability (HWS gets destroyed, parts are jettisoned, Nu Gundam is new and shiny and damage-free).

Seeing the HWS parts on the Hi-Nu though is an interesting sight to see especially for this HGUC version which mimics the MG version that Bandai had released before. The HWS parts give it the proper bulky feel that the Hi-Nu was known for. See, the Nu Gundam was the slender, sleek version. The Hi-Nu was just a towering unit of massive firepower. Having the HWS parts added gives the HGUC Hi-Nu the girth to look menacing.

But this isn’t the first time HWS parts were considered to be used on the Hi-Nu. I remember Ngee Khiong mentioning Vicious Project and their conversion parts for the Master Grade version of the Hi-Nu. I’m just not too fond of the feet since they look like swimming flippers instead of mecha feet. But the HWS parts are pretty much loyal to the original Nu Gundam HWS parts design.

A “legrealisztikusabb” mecha sorozat?

Mielőtt tovább haladok a Zetara, gondoltam, hogy előbb megnézem a első Gundam idején játszódó side storykat. És ezt sikerült jobban megkedvelnem, mint az eredetit.

Plot: Időszámításunk UC 0079. Az Egy Éves Háború, már tombol, a federáció már tud tömeg gyártású Gundameket gyártani, a GM-meket. Főhősünk egy újonc parancsnok Ensing Shiro Armada, akit Dél Kelet Ázsiába küldik, hogy vezetője legyen Kojima Battalion 08-as Mobil Suit csapatnak , kik az új földi típusú Gundameket irányítanak. Hogy ne legyen egyszerű a helyzet, Shiro összefutott egy Zeon csúcs pilótával, Noris Packarddal és szerelmes Aina Shalinbe, aki benne van egy Zeon szuper titkos fegyvernek az irányításával. Így vajon hely tud állni a srác háborúban? Hát nézd meg!:)

A sztorit jobban bírtam, mint az eredetit, pedig az sem volt rossz. Egy rész sem volt fölösleges, meg a két oldal talán komplexebben ábrázolták ebben a sorozatban. Kicsi vicces, mert nem szuperhősökről szól, akik csúcs mechákkal harcolnak, hanem egy halandó katonai osztagról, kiknek nagy robotjai jóval több esélye van, hogy elpusztulnak. Mondjuk a befejezés, nem olyan a többinek(?), de attól még jó volt.

Igaz kell egy jó szereplő gárda is, ezt meg simán teljesíti. Sok szerethető karakter, karakter fejlődés. A 08-as osztagot jobban kedveltem a White Base csapatnál. Nem mondom, hogy ők sem voltak jók, de itt volt valami plusz. Nincs problémám itt.

Na a csaták. Mivel, csak 12 részes, kevés csata van. De itt a realisztikusra mentek(már amennyire óriás robotokkal lehet), így nagyon másra kell számítani: több lövöldözésre és kevesebb lézer kardozásra. Itt nincsenek olyan epikus csaták, mint a fő sorozatoknál, de itt nem is akarták szerintem. Sunrise tisztességesen megoldták ezt a részt.

Tálalás: egész jól néz ki, még mai szemmel is, pedig 1995-ös a sorozat. Azt OST sajnos itt felejtős. Japánul néztem, így a szinkronról nem tudok nyilatkozni. Az OP király és az ED sem rossz.

Lehet, hogy túlértékelem cuccot, de nagyon tetszett. Nem unatkoztam rajta, élveztem és meg is hatottam néha. Aki ne zavarják a mechák, azt nyugodtan nézze meg! De, ha jót akar, azt nézze meg előtte az első sorozatot(vagy a moviet), ha nem akar elveszni a cselekményben.
