COL (RET) Lewis L. Millett received the Medal of Honor during the Korean War for leading what is reported to have been the last major bayonet charge by an Amerocan. COL (RET) Millet passed on Nov 14.

His Medal of Honor citation states in part:

“Despite vicious opposing fire, the whirlwind hand-to-hand assault carried to the crest of the hill. His dauntless leadership and personal courage so inspired his men that they stormed into the hostile position and used their bayonets with such lethal effect that the enemy fled in wild disorder.”

During the attack, CPT Millet charged machine gun emplacements, hurled grenades into bunkers and laid down suppressing fire as he led two platoons to rescue a third platoon which had been pinned down by enemy fire. He was wounded by grenade fragments but refused to be evacuated until after the platoon was relieved and the objective secured.

Our Heroes should be remembered.

After World War II, Millett attended Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, for three years before being called up to serve in Korea. Over a decade later, in the 1960s, he earned a bachelor’s degree from Park College (now known as Park University) in Missouri.^[2]

By February 7, 1951, Millett was serving in Korea as a captain and commander of Company E of the 27th Infantry Regiment. On that day, near Soam-Ni, he led his company in an assault on an enemy position atop Hill 180. When one platoon became pinned down by heavy fire, Millett took another platoon forward, joined the two groups, and led them up the hill. Wielding his bayonet and throwing hand grenades, Millett yelled encouragement to his soldiers throughout the hand to hand fight. Upon reaching the top of the hill, his men stormed the enemy position and forced the opposing soldiers to withdraw. Although wounded in the shin by grenade fragments, Millett refused to be evacuated until the position was secured.^[3]^[4] Historian S.L.A. Marshall described the attack as “the most complete bayonet charge by American troops since Cold Harbor.”^[2]

For his leadership during the assault, Millett was awarded the Medal of Honor. The medal was formally presented to him by President Harry S. Truman in July 1951.^[1] He was also awarded the Army’s second-highest decoration, the Distinguished Service Cross, for leading another bayonet charge in the same month.^[3]

The Medal of Honor is the highest U.S. military decoration awarded to individuals who, while serving in the U.S. armed services, have distinguished themselves by conspicuous gallantry and courage at the risk of life, above and beyond the call of duty. Each recommendation for this decoration must incontestably prove that the act of bravery or self-sacrifice involved obvious risk of life and, if the risk hadn’t been taken, there would be no
just grounds for censure. The award is made in the name of congress and is presented by the President of the United States. Originally authorized by congress in 1861, it’s sometimes called the “Congressional Medal of Honor.”

Of Heroes”. At that time, Pueblo held the distinction of being the only city in America with FOUR living recipients of the Medal of Honor: William J. Crawford (WWII), Carl L. Sitter and Raymond G. “Jerry” Murphy (Korea) and Drew D. Dix (Vietnam). The Medal of Honor is the highest military award that can be bestowed upon a member of the United States Armed Forces.

On September 21, 2001 the Pueblo’s Medal of Honor memorial was dedicated outside the entrance to the Pueblo Convention Center at “Heroes’ Plaza”. Four 8-foot bronze statues of Pueblo’s Medal of Honor recipients dominate the plaza and encircle a pool of water. A Bit of Civil War History

While browsing in Barnes & Noble, Salisbury, Saturday afternoon, I was pleased to spot a copy of Stealing the General, by Russell S. Bonds, in the military history section. This book, and older ones like Wild Train and The Great Locomotive Chase recount the Civil War tale of the Andrews Raiders, or Andrews’ Raiders, a group of Union soldiers that secretly journeyed from the Ohio region to Georgia under the command of a mysterious civilian. There, they stole a Confederate locomotive, the General, with the intention of burning bridges, cutting telegraph wires, and tearing up railroad tracks. Had their mission succeeded, they would have done a great deal of damage to the Confederacy, and possibly brought the war to an early end.

As it happened, they were pursued and eventually caught. Several were hanged, including Samuel Slavens, from whom I am directly descended. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor posthumously; the Andrews Raiders were the first recipients of this prestigious military award.

It’s good to see that Barnes & Noble has such a wide variety of books as to include the account of this little-known bit of Civil War history. They also have an excellent collection of books on local history, although, being located in Salisbury, most focus on Maryland. Salisbury residents, and those of Maryland’s Eastern Shore, have a strange attitude towards Delaware, as if it is any less a part of Delmarva, or significantly more difficult to travel to than other portions of the peninsula. Nonetheless, Barnes & Noble remains one of the few places where it is actually profitable to spend hours shopping, and blow a full wallet of cash.

Esta madre esta que arde!!!

Tan solo en 5 días este juego ha vendido más que las superproducciones de Hollywood, la cifra del dineral que ha acumulado este juego en estos pocos días es para un record guiness sin lugar a dudas.

Activision ha hecho un trabajo espectacular para que este Modern Warfare 2 haya vendido lo que vendío [y seguirá vendiendo por supuesto por que aún no compro mi copia...] obviamente todo esto es gracias a lo que la compañía ha venido haciendo desde el primer Call of Duty aquel de PC que competía codo con codo con Medal of Honor de EA [que apenas quiere levantarse de nuevo...] pero sin duda la base de este éxito lo tiene Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

Modern Warfare 2 a vendido alrededor del mundo y para las consolas XBox 360, PlayStation 3 y PC nada más y nada menos que 550 millones de dólares, si… en solo 5 días.

Felicidades Activision / Infinity Ward… ya se estarán limpiando la cola con puro billete verde, ¿no?… XD cabrones.

A little more insight into great Military Medals

Following one of my latest write ups on the Medal of Honor, I have decided to do a series on the Medals of Valor awarded to each branch of the US Military. The Medal of Honor is the highest decoration awarded by the US government. For a Marine to receive it, he/she must demonstrate valiant efforts in the time of battle against American enemy forces. There have been 3,467 medals awarded; however, nearly 2,000 of these were given during the Civil War and Indian War. This breaks down to only 1519 medals being awarded in wars since ~1865. There have been 19 double recipients of which 5 received two medals for the same act by different branches of the military.

I found some other Military Medals that I wasn’t as informed about until I started doing some research. These will be ordered from most decorated to being going downward.

The Navy Cross is the “second highest award for valor”* behind the Medal of Honor. It was designed by James Earle Fraser and approved by Congress in 1919 due in part to the United States participation in World War I. Since then, it has been awarded more than 6,300 times. The criteria of the award are:

While engaged in action against an enemy of the United States.

While engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force.

While serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict in which the United States is not a belligerent party.*

Design: A cross pattée with four laurel leaves in the corners of the cross. The center features a ship while the reverse features crossing anchors with the letters USN (United States Navy). The ribbon is navy blue with a white stripe down the middle.

Silver Star Medal

The Silver Star is the third highest decoration in the US Military for valor. The Silver Star replaced the Citation Star on July 19, 1932** The Citation Star is shown in the very middle of the Silver Star to this day. Congress passed the Silver Star into law on August 7, 1942 for the Navy and December 15, 1942 for the Army. There are no definite records of the Silver Star in existence but it is estimated that between 100,000 and 150,000 Silver Stars have been awarded since inception. Note: Pilots are generally awarded the Silver Star following 5 or more confirmed kills. The criteria to be awarded must involve heroism that goes above and beyond in the following actions:

In action against an enemy of the United States.

While engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force

While serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party**

Design: The Silver Star is in fact a gold star in appearance. In the middle is a silver star which is encased by laurel wreaths. The back of the star reads: “For Gallantry in Action” and the ribbon features cloth in the order of ultramarine blue, white, ultramarine blue, white, and Old Glory red.

Legion of Merit Medal

The Legion of Merit medal is given for exceptional bravery and conduct for outstanding service and achievement. Congress passed legislation for the Legion of Merit on July 20, 1942*** The main thing that separates the Legion of Merit from the previous Medals is the fact that it can be earned in times of peace and many foreigners have become recipients. The criteria to be awarded:

In peacetime, service should be in the nature of a special requirement or of an extremely difficult duty performed in an unprecedented and clearly exceptional manner.

The performance must have been such as to merit recognition of key individuals for service rendered in a clearly exceptional manner.

For service not related to actual war the term “key individual” applies to a narrower range of positions that in time of war and requires evidence of significant achievement

Design: The design of the medal is different based on the ranking of the recipient. These recipients are ordered from most to least distinguished as:

The Chief Commander Degree of the Legion of Merit Medal is, on a wreath of green laurel joined at the bottom by a gold bow-knot (rosette), a domed five-pointed white star bordered crimson, points reversed with v-shaped extremities tipped with a gold ball. In the center, a blue disk encircled by gold clouds, with 13 white stars arranged in the pattern that appears on the United States Coat of Arms. Between each join, within the wreath are crossed arrows pointing outwards. The overall width is 2 15/16 inches (75 mm). The words “United States of America” are engraved in the center of the reverse. A miniature of the decoration in gold on a horizontal gold bar is worn on the service ribbon.

The Commander features the same exact design which hangs from a crimson ribbon and is connected by a golden laurel wreath.

The Officer design features the same medal design yet is connected to a crimson ribbon via a simple golden hook with a gold replica mounted to the middle of the ribbon.

The Legionnaire design is an replica of the officer design without the medal replica on the ribbon.***

Distinguished Flying Cross Medal

The Distinguished Flying Cross can be awarded to any member of the US Armed Forces yet must take place during aerial combat, following November 11, 1918. Before that date, armed forces members could receive the Distinguished Flying Cross when being nominated for Medals listed above in which the nominee did not receive them. The Flying Cross was passed in an act by congress on July 2, 1926 and its first recipient was Charles Lindbergh. Since then, it has been awarded to many famous recipients, including President George H. W. Bush, John McCain, and Clark Gable to name a few. The criteria for the award:

Officer or enlisted member of the US Armed Forces who distinguishes himself or herself in support of operations by “heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in an aerial flight, subsequent to November 11, 1918”.

Display of heroism while working as instructors or students at flying schools****

Design: The Cross was designed by Elizabeth Will and Arthur DuBois and features a bronze cross pattée. Laying on top of the cross is 4 propellers and these sit on top of rays between the arms of the cross. It hangs from a ribbon that features a red strip in the middle, mirrored on the sides by a thin stripe of white, wide stripe of blue, thin strip of white, and a thin strip of blue.

Navy and Marine Corps Medal

The Navy And Marine Corps Medal is the second highest medal awarded for non-combat actions. It can be awarded the US Navy and Marine Corps soldiers. The most famous recipient of the award was John F. Kennedy for his actions in World War II. It was passed by Congress on August 7, 1942 during World War II. It is most often given for sea rescues where one’s life is risked. The formal requirements are:

Service members who, while serving in any capacity with the Navy or Marine Corps, distinguish themselves by heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy. Typically, it is awarded for actions involving the risk of one’s own life.”****

Design: The medal is made of a golden octagon design on which an eagle is standing on a warship anchor. Underneath the anchor is a globe and “HEROISM” inscribed.

Bronze Star

The Bronze Star can be awarded to members of any US Military Service for acts of bravery or merit. It was passed with Executive Order on February 4, 1944******. When the Bronze Star is awarded for bravery, it is the fourth-highest combat award of the U.S. Military and the ninth highest military award in both non-combat and combat awards in the order of precedence of U.S. military decorations. The Bronze Star Medal is awarded to those who meet specific requirements:

Serving in capacity within or along with United States Army after December 6, 1941

Distinguishing himself or herself by heroic or meritorious achievement or service, not involving aerial flight.

The acts of heroism are of a lesser degree than required for the award of the Silver Star. The acts of merit or acts of valor must be less than that required for the Legion of Merit but must nevertheless have been meritorious and accomplished with distinction.

Design: Designed by Rudolf Freund, the medal features a bronze star with a smaller inscribed bronze star in the middle. The reverse side has the inscription of “Heroic of meritorious achievement” with a space for the name of the recipient of the medal to be engraved. It is hung by a red, white, and blue ribbon.

Air Medal

The Air Medal was established with Executive Order on May 11, 1942 by President Dwight D Eisenhower. It can be awarded for a single heroic act or to a full service of heroism. Requirements:

Crew member or non-crew member who are required to participate in aerial flight on a regular and frequent basis.

Combat duties require regular and frequent flying in other than a passenger status, or individuals who perform a particularly noteworthy act while performing the function of a crew member but who are not on flying status.**********

Design: A bronze “compass rose” with an inscribed soaring eagle that hangs from a blue and orange ribbon.

Guerras modernas nos videogames

Agora é oficial! A Activision conseguiu o que queria; suas primeiras estimativas quanto ao lançamento de Modern Warfare 2 era que o game seria o maior lançamento da indústria do entretenimento na história foi alcançado.

E eles conseguiram, os primeiro números estão sendo divulgados e nada menos que 4,7 milhões de unidades do game foram vendidas em apenas 24 horas, isso só nos Estados Unidos, Canadá e na Inglaterra! O montante representa 310 milhões de dólares em vendas. Meu Deus do céu é grana demais!!!

E com estes numeros assombrosos eu acho que já podemos dar adeus a segunda guerra mundial a esta serie; alguns boatos informam que o provavel Call of Duty 6 (ou 7 se contar esse aqui, mas eu prefiro chama-lo de 4,5) será nos tempos da Guerra Fria, mas vamos ter de esperar pra ver, eu acho que é uma boa opção já que esse negocio de reviver os tempos de 1940 desgastado, funcionou bem em Wolfeinstein mas acho que até aquela serie poderia ter um episodio no presente com B.J sendo enviado ao futuro junto com alguns nazistas até seria interessante… mas estou falando demais.

Bom outra franquia que já foi a maior do mundo também viu o sucesso de Modern Warfare e esta querendo se modernizar, é o classico Medal of Honor que segundo a Eletronic Arts quer fazer com que a serie volte ao topo; Um anúncio oficial é esperado para o fim do ano, com lançamento possível para o primeiro trimestre de 2010. O projeto inicialmente era de uma adaptação da Guerra do Afeganistão, será que irão aproveitar a ideia ainda? Bom o que sabemos é que agora uma verdadeira Guerra vai acontecer nos videogames, todo mundo vai querer peguar carona nesse sucesso da Activision!

Σύμφωνα με φήμες λοιπόν, studio του κολοσσού της βιομηχανίας των videogames ήδη δουλεύει πάνω στο επόμενο παιχνίδι της σειράς το οποίο θα κυκλοφορήσει την περίοδο Φεβρουαρίου-Μαρτίου 2010 στα Xbox360, PS3 και PC και ω του θαύματος δεν θα πραγματεύεται τον χιλιοτραγουδισμένο Β’ Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο αλλά –κρατηθείτε- έναν άλλο, πιο σύγχρονο! Δύσκολα να πρόκειται για κάποιον πραγματικό αλλά όπως και να ‘χει, επιτέλους, ξεκολλάμε από τον ρημαδιασμένο τον Β.Π.Π![νεχτ]

Catholic Chaplians Monument

On Veteran’s Day, let us remember also those priests who dedicated part or all of their lives to the spiritual needs of our soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines.

On 21 May 1989, the Archdiocese for the Military Services erected a monument at Arlington National Cemetery honoring the 83 Catholic chaplains who gave their lives in World War Two, Korea, and Vietnam.

Three honorable Catholic chaplains have earned the Congressional Medal of Honor:

Fr. Vincent R. Capodanno – 4 September 1967 (posthumously)

Fr. Joseph T. O’Callahan – 19 March 1945

Fr. Charles J. Watters – 19 November 1967 (posthumously)

Fr. Joseph T. O'Callahan

Father Joseph Timothy O’Callahan (14 May 1904 + 18 March 1964) became the first chaplain of any military service to receive the Medal of Honor. Fr. O’Callahan became a Jesuit priest in 1922. He joined the Naval reserve in 1940 and received a commission as a Lieutenant (Junior Grade). On 2 March 1945, the Navy assigned Fr. O’Callahan to the aircraft carrier USS Franklin. Seventeen days later, the ship suffered a deadly Japanese air assault. Fr. O’Callahan not only comforted the wounded, but also led damage control and ammunition jettisoning parties. The Franklin’s commanding officer called Fr. O’Callahan “the bravest man I ever saw.” Fr. O’Callahan retired from the Navy as a Captain in November 1953. On 21 July 1965, the Navy commissioned the destroyer escort USS O’Callahan, a ship which served until 1994. Fr. O’Callahan’s Medal of Honor citation reads:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as chaplain on board the U.S.S. Franklin when that vessel was fiercely attacked by enemy Japanese aircraft during offensive operations near Kobe, Japan, on 19 March 1945. A valiant and forceful leader, calmly braving the perilous barriers of flame and twisted metal to aid his men and his ship, Lt. Comdr. O’Callahan groped his way through smoke-filled corridors to the open flight deck and into the midst of violently exploding bombs, shells, rockets, and other armament. With the ship rocked by incessant explosions, with debris and fragments raining down and fires raging in ever-increasing fury, he ministered to the wounded and dying, comforting and encouraging men of all faiths; he organized and led firefighting crews into the blazing inferno on the flight deck; he directed the jettisoning of live ammunition and the flooding of the magazine; he manned a hose to cool hot, armed bombs rolling dangerously on the listing deck, continuing his efforts, despite searing, suffocating smoke which forced men to fall back gasping and imperiled others who replaced them. Serving with courage, fortitude, and deep spiritual strength, Lt. Comdr. O’Callahan inspired the gallant officers and men of the Franklin to fight heroically and with profound faith in the face of almost certain death and to return their stricken ship to port.

Rev. Vincent R. Capodanno

Father Vincent Robert Capodanno (13 Februrary 1929 + 4 September 1967) was ordained on 7 July 1957. Following eight years of service with the Catholic Foreign Mission Society, Fr. Capodanno received a commission with the Navy on 28 December 1965. He requested and was granted field service with the Marines in Vietnam and even extended his one-year tour by six months in order to continue ministering to the men. Fr. Capodanno was mortally wounded on 4 September 1967 while coming to the aid of wounded comrades. His cause for Canonization is currently open (for more information click here). His Medal of Honor citation reads:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as Chaplain of the 3d Battalion, in connection with operations against enemy forces. In response to reports that the 2d Platoon Of M Company was in danger of being overrun by a massed enemy assaulting force, Lt. Capodanno left the relative safety of the company command post and ran through an open area raked with fire, directly to the beleaguered platoon. Disregarding the intense enemy small-arms, automatic-weapons, and mortar fire, he moved about the battlefield administering last rites to the dying and giving medical aid to the wounded. When an exploding mortar round inflicted painful multiple wounds to his arms and legs, and severed a portion of his right hand, he steadfastly refused all medical aid. Instead, he directed the corpsmen to help their wounded comrades, and, with calm vigor, continued to move about the battlefield as he provided encouragement by voice and example to the valiant marines. Upon encountering a wounded corpsman in the direct line of fire of an enemy machine gunner positioned approximately 15 yards away, Lt. Capodanno rushed in a daring attempt to aid and assist the mortally wounded corpsman. At that instant, only inches from his goal, he was struck down by a burst of machine gun fire. By his heroic conduct on the battlefield, and his inspiring example, Lt. Capodanno upheld the finest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the cause of freedom.

Fr. Charles J. Watters

Fr. Charles Watters (17 January 1927 + 19 November 1967) was ordained in 1953. He became a chaplain in the Air Nation Guard in 1962 and two years later volunteered for active duty as an Army chaplain. Fr. Watters completed his tour of duty in Vietnam in July 1967, but requested a six month extension to his tour. Fr. Watters died tending to the wounded in combat near Dak To on 19 November 1967. His Medal of Honor citation reads:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Chaplain Watters distinguished himself during an assault in the vicinity of Dak To. Chaplain Watters was moving with one of the companies when it engaged a heavily armed enemy battalion. As the battle raged and the casualties mounted, Chaplain Watters, with complete disregard for his safety, rushed forward to the line of contact. Unarmed and completely exposed, he moved among, as well as in front of the advancing troops, giving aid to the wounded, assisting in their evacuation, giving words of encouragement, and administering the last rites to the dying. When a wounded paratrooper was standing in shock in front of the assaulting forces, Chaplain Watters ran forward, picked the man up on his shoulders and carried him to safety. As the troopers battled to the first enemy entrenchment, Chaplain Watters ran through the intense enemy fire to the front of the entrenchment to aid a fallen comrade. A short time later, the paratroopers pulled back in preparation for a second assault. Chaplain Watters exposed himself to both friendly and enemy fire between the two forces in order to recover two wounded soldiers. Later, when the battalion was forced to pull back into a perimeter, Chaplain Watters noticed that several wounded soldiers were lying outside the newly formed perimeter. Without hesitation and ignoring attempts to restrain him, Chaplain Watters left the perimeter three times in the face of small arms, automatic weapons, and mortar fire to carry and to assist the injured troopers to safety. Satisfied that all of the wounded were inside the perimeter, he began aiding the medics … applying field bandages to open wounds, obtaining and serving food and water, giving spiritual and mental strength and comfort. During his ministering, he moved out to the perimeter from position to position redistributing food and water, and tending to the needs of his men. Chaplain Watters was giving aid to the wounded when he himself was mortally wounded. Chaplain Watters’ unyielding perseverance and selfless devotion to his comrades was in keeping with the highest traditions of the U.S. Army.

Ο νέος τίτλος της εταιρίας είναι το The Void, ίσως η πιο παράξενη και ακαταλαβίστικη δημιουργία στην ιστορία του gaming. Το The Void δεν ανήκει σε κάποιο συγκεκριμένο genre. Παίζεται όπως ένα φυσιολογικό first-person shooter, μοιάζει με ένα δύσκολο adventure και τρομάζει όπως ένα survival horror. Δεν είναι όμως τίποτα απ’ όλα αυτά. Barack Obama Doesn't know the difference between this and a Medal of Honor ceremony

This month, President Obama, despite his rather showy appearance to salute the coffins of American servicemen arriving at Dover– and finally showing up today at Fort Hood for the public memorial service– is proving how ignorant (if not indifferent) he is to the military’s traditions of how Americans honor our fallen heroes.

PRESIDENT OBAMA: I want to thank my Cabinet members and senior administration officials who participated today. I hear that Dr. Joe Medicine Crow (ph) was around, and so I want to give a shout out to that Congressional Medal of Honor winner. It’s good to see you.

Largely overlooked in the shock many felt over Obama’s casual and callow statement about the massacre at Ft. Hood was the fact that he showed in his “shout out” to Joe Medicine Crow, that he did not know the difference between the Presidential Medal of Freedom– a largely political award at the discretion of the President– and the Congressional Medal of Honor.

The Medal of Honor is the nation’s highest honor for valor in combat; and as likely to be awarded posthumously as not. In fact, all of the Medal of Honor recipients in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have so far been awarded to soldiers who gave their lives to save those of their comrades.

A private who is awarded (not “wins” as the President crassly put it) the Medal of Honor would be literally saluted by a room full of generals. Such is the reverence in which it is held, and the rarity of its awarding.

I mean to take nothing away from Joe Medicine Crow, a distinguished American who fought bravely in WWII, and earned a Bronze Star in combat. And as you can see in this video, is an exceedingly charming and fascinating guy.

To add just another touch of Irony, Crow was honored by President Obama just 3 months ago in August of this year! Here is an excerpt of the press release from the Office of the White House Press Secretary announcing the naming of Joe Medicine Crow as a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

“Dr. Joseph Medicine Crow, the last living Plains Indian war chief, is the author of seminal works in Native American history and culture. He is the last person alive to have received direct oral testimony from a participant in the Battle of the Little Bighorn: his grandfather was a scout for General George Armstrong Custer. A veteran of World War II, Medicine Crow accomplished during the war all of the four tasks required to become a ‘war chief,’ including stealing fifty Nazi SS horses from a German camp. Medicine Crow was the first member of his tribe to attend college, receiving his master’s degree in anthropology in 1939, and continues to lecture at universities and notable institutions like the United Nations. His contributions to the preservation of the culture and history of the First Americans are matched only by his importance as a role model to young Native Americans across the country.”

As impressive as Joe Medicine Crow is, and as deserving a recipient as he may have been for a Presidential Medal, compare the above citation with that of Michael Monsoor, a Navy Seal who was a recent Medal of Honor recipient.

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as automatic weapons gunner for Naval Special Warfare Task Group Arabian Peninsula, in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM on 29 September 2006. As a member of a combined SEAL and Iraqi Army Sniper Overwatch Element, tasked with providing early warning and stand-off protection from a rooftop in an insurgent held sector of Ar Ramadi, Iraq, Petty Officer Monsoor distinguished himself by his exceptional bravery in the face of grave danger. In the early morning, insurgents prepared to execute a coordinated attack by reconnoitering the area around the element’s position. Element snipers thwarted the enemy’s initial attempt by eliminating two insurgents. The enemy continued to assault the element, engaging them with a rocket-propelled grenade and small arms fire. As enemy activity increased, Petty Officer Monsoor took position with his machine gun between two teammates on an outcropping of the roof. While the SEALs vigilantly watched for enemy activity, an insurgent threw a hand grenade from an unseen location, which bounced off Petty Officer Monsoor’s chest and landed in front of him. Although only he could have escaped the blast, Petty Officer Monsoor chose instead to protect his teammates. Instantly and without regard for his own safety, he threw himself onto the grenade to absorb the force of the explosion with his body, saving the lives of his two teammates. By his undaunted courage, fighting spirit, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of certain death, Petty Officer Monsoor gallantly gave his life for his country, thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

Ironically, in an obvious agenda piece in the New York Times about Muslims serving in the U.S. military, they included Monsoor, whose Navy biography clearly states that he was a practicing Catholic (as are the majority of Americans of Lebanese descent, not to mention his mother’s Irish heritage), as an example of a heroic American Muslim!

The corrected article now makes little sense at the end, as it preserved a quote from Muslim soldier making the point that Monsoor would never achieve the fame of Hasan. But that’s not because of Monsoor’s supposed heritage, it’s because he’s a hero. The lame stream media hasn’t celebrated one of those in a long, long time.

There was a time when the media celebrated the Medal of Honor. One of the more famous examples is Audie Murphy, whose press—not to mention his looks—was good enough to make this war hero into a movie star. His Medal of Honor citation is also a good example—and contrast to the Presidential Medal—of what it takes for a living soldier to be awarded the CMOH:

2d Lt. Murphy commanded Company B, which was attacked by 6 tanks and waves of infantry. 2d Lt. Murphy ordered his men to withdraw to prepared positions in a woods, while he remained forward at his command post and continued to give fire directions to the artillery by telephone. Behind him, to his right, 1 of our tank destroyers received a direct hit and began to burn. Its crew withdrew to the woods. 2d Lt. Murphy continued to direct artillery fire which killed large numbers of the advancing enemy infantry. With the enemy tanks abreast of his position, 2d Lt. Murphy climbed on the burning tank destroyer, which was in danger of blowing up at any moment, and employed its .50 caliber machinegun against the enemy. He was alone and exposed to German fire from 3 sides, but his deadly fire killed dozens of Germans and caused their infantry attack to waver. The enemy tanks, losing infantry support, began to fall back. For an hour the Germans tried every available weapon to eliminate 2d Lt. Murphy, but he continued to hold his position and wiped out a squad which was trying to creep up unnoticed on his right flank. Germans reached as close as 10 yards, only to be mowed down by his fire. He received a leg wound, but ignored it and continued the single-handed fight until his ammunition was exhausted. He then made his way to his company, refused medical attention, and organized the company in a counterattack which forced the Germans to withdraw. His directing of artillery fire wiped out many of the enemy; he killed or wounded about 50. 2d Lt. Murphy’s indomitable courage and his refusal to give an inch of ground saved his company from possible encirclement and destruction, and enabled it to hold the woods which had been the enemy’s objective.

There are living American heroes who have performed like Audie Murphy among us today. The recent trend to only award the Medal of Honor posthumously should be reversed. While the Silver Star and Navy Cross are indeed badges of incredible courage; the idea that the nation’s highest honor can only be achieved through horrific damage to one’s self, and not for horrific damage done to the enemy at risk to one’s self, is a concession to political correctness that should never be allowed.

This Veterans Day, do yourself a favor, spend some time browsing the official Medal of Honor website. There is no better reminder of the heroism and sacrifice that is characteristic of the United States Armed Forces, and a great antidote to the pervasive attitude to the contrary in the modern media.

Michael Monsoor Was Not a Muslim

Was Michael Monsoor a Muslim? Well that’s the impression a person might get after reading the November 9, 2009 New York Times article “Complications Grow for Muslims Serving in U.S. Military”, by Andrea Elliott.

For those unfamiliar with Michael Monsoor. He was the Navy Seal who unselfishly gave his life, in order to save his fellow Seals, when he jumped on a live grenade on September 29, 2006. He was the only one, in a roof top overlook, who could have escaped unharmed that day, yet he chose to give his life instead. In doing so he not only overcame his own instinct of self preservation but he actually went against what SEALS are trained to do in such circumstances.

Those who survived described him as “never taking his eyes off the grenade” and always moving down and toward the explosive. The most moving tribute to Monsoor came from one of the SEALS who survived. “Mikey looked death in the face that day,” he recounted, “and said, ‘you cannot take my brothers, I will go in their stead.’”

Let all tongues be mute.

Now we have the opposite thing take place on the largest Army base in the world when another soldier, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, turned his weapons on fellow soldiers at Fort Hood; thirteen were left dead in his wake of destruction. As he was carrying out this massacre, Hasan was reported to be continually yelling “Allah Akbar”, the same thing Muslim extremist scream as they cut off the heads of their American victims.

There are those who refuse to see the religious motivations for the actions of Hasan, but what writer Andrea Elliott does in her November 9^th article simply goes beyond the pale.

She tells of the woes Muslims face in the military but then ends the article by showing the great contribution, by people of the Muslim religion, that are often overlooked. Among those she cites is a soldier who received the Bronze Star. This soldier pointed out how “many Americans overlook the heroic efforts of Muslims in uniform.” The prime example he gave was that of Michael Monsoor.

Michael Monsoor was of Lebanese descent and he was a practicing Roman Catholic. His godmother personally told me, in an interview for my article No Greater Love, that he frequented the sacraments. His attendance at Sunday mass left such an impression on those who served with him, that they sometimes joined him. Besides attending mass he also frequented the sacrament of confession. He was an exemplary individual in many ways but most especially by his practice of his Catholic faith. To insinuate in any way the he was Muslim is a gross ignorance of the facts and misleading for the reader.

A two minute search on Google is all that is needed to find out the facts I have narrated in this article. Why did Mrs. Elliott not take the time to research who Michael Monsoor was before allowing such a gross misrepresentation of the man in our nation’s most prominent newspaper.

What is so insulting about all of this is the contrast between the actions of the two men. Maj. Hasan was, from what every report indicates, full of hatred, whereas Michael Monsoor was motivated by the purest of love, a love which was said to have no equal by our Savior Himself: “No Greater Love.”

Andrea Elliott owes an apology to the Monsoor parents and to the American people. Heroes of the caliber of Michael Monsoor are extremely rare in the world we live in. He was young, handsome, strong and had his whole life ahead of him when he stepped onto the Ramadi rooftop that day in 2006. He had everything life can offer and in the blinking of an eye he gave all of it up. He was given a choice to save himself or his friends. He chose, in a split second, to save his friends. He is an example for us all and he deserves better than this.

Audie Murphy is a living legend even today some 38 years after his passing and almost 65 years from when his name first made the National Press followinh his heroic one man stand against the Nazi onslaught against his Company position in World War Two.
He ordered his unit to withdraw to prepared safe locations and alone held off an estimated 250 enemy soldiers and six King Tiger tanks for over an hour that were attacking his position from three sides.
this young kid with only a fifth grade education became a name synomious with freedom and he won the hearts and admiration of the American people.
This is a great video Tribute to the great Audie Murphy posted on You Tube.
Very moving and touching to this great American hero and legend.

EA Prepping New Medal of Honor

There was once a time when EA’s Medal of Honor series was considered the pinnacle of all WWII FPS. Then they made tedious sequels and spinoffs, and let Infinity Ward muscle their way to the top of that gaming genre. EA Games label president Frank Gibeau spoke yesterday afternoon during a Q2 conference call and stated the following:

“In the months ahead, you’ll hear more about our plans to revitalize core IP, including the Medal of Honor franchise.”

Reboot here we come. This should be interesting, considering Infinity Ward’s team consists of big time players from the M.O.H. Allied Assault team.

Die überarbeitete sowie inhaltlich neu strukturierte Version von Capcoms (Shooter-) Survival-Horror-Spiel soll im rein digital über das PSN und Xbox Live erhältlich sein. Damit verzichtet Capcom auf klassische Disks. Diese Entscheidung ließe sich auf das Feedback in den USA, Europa und Australien zurückfühen, erklärte Chris Cramer von Capcom (capcom-unity). Schon bald wolle man den neuen Ableger der berühmten Weltkriegs-Shooter-Reihe enthüllen. Dies verkündete Frank Gibeau von EA Games Chefetage jedenfalls auf einem gestrigen Investorentreffen (g4tv). Weitere Details wurden aber nicht genannt. Lange Zeit war es eher ruhig um das Franchising geworden, wohl auch um Call of Duty ausreichend Raum auf dem Markt zu verschaffen.

Obama's Political Correctness The Gateway Drug To Terrorism

Political correctness is running amok like a massive wildfire set by a pack of raving arsonists. And that wildfire claimed the lives of 14 people at Fort Hood, in addition to some 38 others who were wounded.

We find out things like this:

Danquah assumed the military’s chain of command knew about Hasan’s doubts, which had been known for more than a year to classmates at the Maryland graduate military medical program. His fellow students complained to the faculty about Hasan’s “anti-American propaganda,” but said a fear of appearing discriminatory against a Muslim student kept officers from filing a formal complaint.

Of course, I myself am quite used to encountering “anti-American propaganda.” I watch the mainstream media.

Initially, the FBI wouldn’t even consider the possibility that Nidal Hasan was a terrorist. They immediately came out saying there “was no terrorism nexus” with a Muslim shooter who repeatedly shouted “Allahu Akbar!” as he fired more than 100 rounds at unarmed soldiers. A Muslim shooter whom they KNEW had tried to contact al-Qaeda.

ABC reported as follows:

ROBIN ROBERTS, ABC: We’re going to turn now to the attack at Fort Hood. Authorities are actively investigating whether the suspected gunman, Major Nidal Malik Hasan, had links to any terrorist organizations. Our chief investigative correspondent Brian Ross has learned that Hasan was most-likely trying to just do that, forge that kind of link?

BRIAN ROSS, ABC: Indeed, Robin. As Major Hasan’s road to increased radicalization becomes clearer, ABC News has learned that U.S. intelligence agencies became aware months ago that he was attempting to make contact with people connected to al Qaeda. Two American officials who have been briefed on classified information say it’s not known whether the military was ever told by the CIA or others that one of its majors was making efforts to communicate with figures under electronic surveillance by the U.S. Congress has now asked the CIA and other intelligence agencies to preserve all documents that relate to Hasan, as it appears a full investigation is now likely into whether the warning signs were missed.

Kind of makes you wonder just what you have to do to have the Obama administration call you a “terrorist” these days. Besides voting Republican or working at Fox News, I mean.

This is now the SECOND successful domestic terrorist-jihadist attack – Oops, I’m sorry, Domestic Contingency Operation – that the United States has suffered under the Obama administration. And there is little question that it will not be the last.

And even NBC reported that Obama’s reaction to it was just plain weird, in addition to being an example of “frightening insensitivity.” Among other things, Obama’s first words to the American people consisted in giving a “shout out” to a “Congressional Medal of Honor” winner who has never been awarded such an honor. Rather, President Obama HIMSELF awarded the guy a Medal of Freedom. Big diff – and you’d expect a one-tenth-way competent commander-in-chief to know that obvious difference.

And if that isn’t horrible enough, we find out that the Obama administration recruited Nidal Hasan – whom we now know was a terrorist – to write a propagandist ideological Department of Homeland Security report fearmongering “rightwing extremists.”

It should therefore come as no surprise that we find the Army chief-of-staff under Commander-in-Chief Obama being sent out to TV land to say that his greatest worry is some kind of backlash against Muslims, because God – I’m sorry for my intolerance - Allah forbid that ANY of them so much as get their feelings hurt as their community launches so many terror attacks worldwide that nobody even bothers to keep statistics any more.

Well, at least General Casey and his commander-in-chief aren’t worried about something silly, such as the fact that a bunch of his unarmed soldiers just got gunned down on their own base in the USA by a guy yelling “Allahu Akbar!”

Consider how politically correct the U.S. military has become under the Barack Hussein administration: this guy was actually promoted to major, in spite of the fact that he was telling his colleagues that infidels (that’s you and me) should die, and in spite of the fact that he was trying to contact al Qaeda to find out what he could do to help their cause.

Doug Ross at DirectorBlue located one of Hasan’s internet postings comparing a soldier diving on a grenade to save his buddies with a terrorist blowing himself up to kill non-Muslims (and, of course, “bad” Muslims):

There was a grenade thrown amongs [sic] a group of American soldiers. One of the soldiers, feeling that it was to late for everyone to flee jumped on the grave with the intention of saving his comrades. Indeed he saved them. He inentionally [sic] took his life (suicide) for a noble cause i.e. saving the lives of his soldier. To say that this soldier committed suicide is inappropriate. Its more appropriate to say he is a brave hero that sacrificed his life for a more noble cause. Scholars have paralled [sic] this to suicide bombers whose intention, by sacrificing their lives, is to help save Muslims by killing enemy soldiers. If one suicide bomber can kill 100 enemy soldiers because they were caught off guard that would be considered a strategic victory. Their intention is not to die because of some despair.

Here’s another “in his own words” take on Nidal Hasan available at NPR:

[DANIEL] ZWERDLING: Earlier today, I spoke to a psychiatrist who worked very closely with Hasan and knows him very well. And he said, you know, from the beginning -and Hasan was there for four years – the medical staff was very worried about this guy. He said the first thing is he’s cold, unfriendly. At least that’s who he came off. He did not do a good job as a psychiatrist in training, was repeatedly warned, you better shape up, or, you know, you’re going to be in trouble. Did badly in his classes, seemed disinterested. But second of all – and this is, perhaps, you know, more relevant. The psychiatrist says that he was very proud and upfront about being Muslim. And psychiatrist hastened to say, and nobody minded that. But he seemed almost belligerent about being Muslim, and he gave a lecture one day that really freaked a lot of doctors out.

They have grand rounds, right? They, you know, dozens of medical staff come into an auditorium, and somebody stands at the podium at the front and gives a lecture about some academic issue, you know, what drugs to prescribe for what condition. But instead of that, he – Hasan apparently gave a long lecture on the Koran and talked about how if you don’t believe, you are condemned to hell. Your head is cut off. You’re set on fire. Burning oil is burned down your throat.

The ironically funny thing is that Nidal Hassan – after enjoying the fruits of his million dollar education, anyway – ostensibly wanted out of the military. But because he was a protected member of the cherished liberal class, he couldn’t do anything that could actually offend anybody enough to kick him out. He could be professionally incompetent; he could tell his colleagues that they should die; he could try to indoctrinate returning veterans from Afghanistan and Iraq into radical Islam; he could post violent terrorist internet comments; he could actually try to contact al Qaeda. And it didn’t matter. Not only did he remain an officer and a “gentleman,” but he got PROMOTED.

This is rather like Montgomery Burns promoting Homer Simpson at the Springfield nuclear power plant. Only in this case, Homer Simpson is a raving jihadist terrorist as well as an incompetent buffoon.

The federal authorities knew all this prior to Nidal Hasan going out and buying an $1100 gun. Apparently, we have quite a few “Homers” in our ranks these days.

Don’t want to appear like you’re discriminating or anything.

After all, hasn’t Obama already apologized to our enemies enough as it already is? And hasn’t he apologized enough to the Muslim world? Do you want to give him something ELSE to feel that he should apologize for, such as yanking a Muslim radical out of the Army as a terrorist threat before he became a terrorist mass murderer?

Of course, had “Captain Hasan” been a white evangelical Christian who told his colleagues that openly declared gays shouldn’t be allowed to serve in the military, he would have been drummed out faster than you could say, “Out, damn’d spot!” And he certainly would NEVER have been allowed to become “Major Hasan.” Especially in Barack Obama’s Army.

Being politically correct is not merely a naive attempt to make people feel better; it’s a much larger, much more coordinated, and much more sinister effort to change Western culture as we know it. Progressives designed this game plan decades ago – following the previous success that Marxists enjoyed after employing the same stratagem – and liberals continue to execute the same game plan today: to shape the debate and control the argument by controlling the language. All they need to succeed is an oversensitive public that is ignorant of history and morality.

What may be most interesting of all is how liberalism becomes the useful idiot of jihadist terrorism, apart from that thing about liberals being “so open-minded their brains fall out.”

As just one of many examples of liberals brains having fallen out, how about the liberal view that Nidal Hasan was mentally ill rather than a terrorist? Because, as we all know, terrorists are the epitome of mental health, and being the former must therefore rule that latter out.

And yet here we have Evan Thomas, editor-at-large with Newsweek saying:

I cringe that he’s a Muslim. I mean, because it inflames all the fears. I think he’s probably just a nut case. But with that label attached to him, it will get the right wing going and it just — I mean these things are tragic, but that makes it much worse.

And again, we have this morally deranged Newsweek ideologue essentially saying that it’s those right wingers who are the REAL terrorists. We have a moral idiot burying his head in the sand while using every possible opportunity to demonize his political adversaries.

All of this is par for the course in the Brave New World of Barack Hussein.

This is a great time for a replay of an American Thinker article entitled, “Islam’s Useful Idiots.” It reads in part:

Islam enjoys a large and influential ally among the non—Muslims: A new generation of ‘Useful Idiots,’ the sort of people Lenin identified living in liberal democracies who furthered the work of communism. This new generation of Useful Idiots also lives in liberal democracies, but serves the cause of Islamofascism—another virulent form of totalitarian ideology.

Useful Idiots are naive, foolish, ignorant of facts, unrealistically idealistic, dreamers, willfully in denial or deceptive. They hail from the ranks of the chronically unhappy, the anarchists, the aspiring revolutionaries, the neurotics who are at war with life, the disaffected alienated from government, corporations, and just about any and all institutions of society. The Useful Idiot can be a billionaire, a movie star, an academe of renown, a politician, or from any other segment of the population.

Arguably, the most dangerous variant of the Useful Idiot is the ‘Politically Correct.’ He is the master practitioner of euphemism, hedging, doubletalk, and outright deception.

The Useful Idiot derives satisfaction from being anti—establishment. He finds perverse gratification in aiding the forces that aim to dismantle an existing order, whatever it may be: an order he neither approves of nor he feels he belongs to.

The Useful Idiot is conflicted and dishonest. He fails to look inside himself and discover the causes of his own problems and unhappiness while he readily enlists himself in causes that validate his distorted perception.

Understandably, it is easier to blame others and the outside world than to examine oneself with an eye to self—discovery and self—improvement. Furthermore, criticizing and complaining—liberal practices of the Useful Idiot—require little talent and energy. The Useful Idiot is a great armchair philosopher and ‘Monday Morning Quarterback.’

The Useful Idiot is not the same as a person who honestly has a different point of view. A society without honest and open differences of views is a dead society. Critical, different and fresh ideas are the life blood of a living society—the very anathema of autocracies where the official position is sacrosanct.

Even a ‘normal’ person spends a great deal more energy aiming to fix things out there than working to overcome his own flaws and shortcomings, or contribute positively to the larger society. People don’t like to take stock of what they are doing or not doing that is responsible for the conditions they disapprove.

But the Useful Idiot takes things much farther. The Useful Idiot, among other things, is a master practitioner of scapegoating. He assigns blame to others while absolving himself of responsibility, has a long handy list of candidates for blaming anything and everything, and by living a distorted life, he contributes to the ills of society.

The Useful Idiot may even engage in willful misinformation and deception when it suits him. Terms such as ‘Political Islam,’ or ‘Radical Islam,’ for instance, are contributions of the Useful Idiot. These terms do not even exist in the native parlance of Islam, simply because they are redundant. Islam, by its very nature and according to its charter—the Quran—is a radical political movement. It is the Useful Idiot who sanitizes Islam and misguides the populace by saying that the ‘real Islam’ constitutes the main body of the religion; and, that this main body is non—political and moderate.

And so here we are, “speculating” over whether a terrorist mass murderer is actually a “terrorist” (a now banned retranslation of the politically correct “Overseas Contintency Operation” that itself idiotically fails to understand that terrorists can come from right here, too.

Weakness is provocative, as Don Rumsfeld said. And boy oh boy are we ever “provocative” these days.

Do you want to hear the “politically incorrect” truth? We are at a crisis such as history has never before seen in the form of jihadist Islam. And we are making it far worse by burying our heads in the sand and refusing to recognize the dilemma until long after it is too late to do anything to address it.
