After some reminiscing, I decided to compile a list of 15 artists that I indulged in this year. This year was rather interesting because 2009 was the year that Korean pop culture decided to take over half of my life and reveal to me the beauty and awesomeness of K-pop. It’s as if my taste in music did a back flip and transformed, honestly. And this list is definite evidence of that.

This was a frustrating process, 1.) because I listened to VARIOUS artists – I didn’t even know where to begin, and 2.) choosing which songs summed up the top players of this year was an extra load of agony. But I did it. I even cheated a bit and added bonus contenders that were close to making my top 15 list.

[FYI: Many of these songs weren't released in the year 2009, but were listened to by my humble ears, regardless]

Here is part 2 of My Top Songs of 2009

Monica Naranjo – Europa

Although Monica Naranjo’s most recent album, Tarantula, was released April of last year, it came to life for me by the end of 2008 and I played the crap out of it for several months afterward. While on my stay in Mexico during Spring Break 2009, I really couldn’t put this woman’s music down. Her title track off the album, Europa, is absolutely beautiful. If you’re a musical dork and want to listen to something distinct with fantastic orchestration and melodies, plus some amazing vocals, this is a definite treat for you. You can really tell there was some serious thinking behind this song, and, er, I love it.

Little Boots – Meddle

Little Boots produces the kind of pop music that I enjoy and wish was heard more here in the US. She shows that it doesn’t take much processing to come out with brilliant songs, unlike the nasties that rule the lame music charts here, such as that disgusting Miley Cyrus. Little Boots’ vocals are subtle, but her lively melodies and sweet instrumentation makes her music sound super cool. She is just peachy fun!

Paolo Nutini – Candy

Paolo Nutini makes music that almost doesn’t reflect him at his age, that’s looking at it from the outside. He’s 22 and creates music that has been said to be “wise beyond this songwriter’s years“, which is almost dead on with what I think sometimes when I listen to his music. He debuted his second album, Sunny Side Up, in May and both the lyrics and recording are compelling pieces of work. Candy is one of my favorite songs of his, ever. It’s soft and delightfully beautiful.

Pet Shop Boys – Vulnerable

PSB are one of my favorite pop groups of all time. I cherish all of their songs, they are indicative of who I am. Pet Shop Boys really know how to make pop music, it’s what they’re all about and come on, it’s all catchy. Vulnerable in particular details the specific kind of music that I deeply enjoy; subtle, melodic, and soft. It’s like one of those songs that I can rely on, almost like a bff. Music doesn’t have to always be over the top and showy to be cool.

Big Bang – My Heaven

Alright, so sometime in June, I was watching some random videos on youtube when I stumbled upon this song. It must have been fate. I was so naive too, because I thought it was Japanese at first. I had no idea what they were saying, who they were or what on earth I was doing trailing behind this unfamiliar culture. I thought they’re fashion was pretty out there, and the music didn’t sound half bad, so I dug a little deeper and OMFG I quickly discovered what is now referred to as K-pop. K POP! My Heaven, ironically, later became part of my actual heaven, Korea, Korean media and Korean culture. I love it all, I will always love it, and thank you Big Bang.

part 3 arrives tomorrow

La mayoría rinde tributo, y con toda razón, a The dark side of the Moon (1973) o The wall (1979).

Fearless

You say the hill’s too steep to climb
Climb it
You say you’d like to see me try
Climbing

You pick the place and I’ll choose the time
And I’ll climb
That hill in my own way
Just wait a while for the right day
And as I rise above the tree lines and the clouds
I look down, hearing the sound of the things you’ve said today

Fearlessly the idiot faced the crowd
Smiling
Merciless the magistrate turns ’round
Frowning

And who’s the fool who wears the crown?
And go down
In your own way
And every day is the right day
And as you rise above the fear-lines in his brow
You look down, hearing the sound of the faces in the crowd

Echoes

Overhead the albatross
Hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves
In labyrinths of coral caves
An echo of a distant time
Comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine

And no-one called us to the land
And no-one knows the where’s or why’s
But something stirs and something tries
Starts to climb toward the light

Strangers passing in the street
By chance two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand
The best I can

And no-one called us to move on
And no-one forces down our eyes
And no-one speaks and no-one tries
And no-one flies around the sun

Cloudless every day you fall upon my waking eyes
Inviting and inciting me to rise
And through the window in the wall
Come streaming in on sunlight wings
A million bright ambassadors of morning

And no-one sings me lullabies
And no-one makes me close my eyes
And so I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky

Personally I think Victoria Hesketh became less relevant when her album was finally released. I remember the excitement I felt when I first heard ‘Meddle’ back in July 2008, almost a year before her album came out, but after all the anticipation I don’t think ‘Hands’ really fulfilled it’s potential.

Support from mass media and radio stations and music channels has been a blessing and a curse for the Blackpool born popstar. What was once a cult following increased rapidly after the release of her second single ‘Remedy’. The song made the top 10 here in the U.K probably due to excessive airplay on radio stations and in clubs. This is not necessarily a bad thing but most of the songs on her debut seem to lose their magic after so many listens and having heard the majorty of her album on her myspace profile months prior to it’s release, finally hearing the album in full was disappointing.

This is not to say the album is without it’s good points. Although slightly lacking in variety and the musical style sounding a little generic, the album as a whole is a decent pop album. The gloriously dark synth pop of ‘Symmetry’ (which features vocals from Human League singer Philip Oakley) and the uber stylish, geeky, electro stopmer ‘Mathematics’ are definately worth a listen. However, the disembodied vocals of ‘Click’ and slushy sacharine ballad ‘Tune into my Heart’ are slightly less listenable.

As much as I love this video, I can’t help but feel like Little Boots is becoming less interesting as her fan base increases. In the begining it was the quirkiness and intelligence of her music that caught my attention. But now it seems she is becoming more and more mainstream perhaps due to her record company in an attempt to sell more records. Although ‘Hands’ is more than listenable it lacks the charm and creativity of the early myspace demos. Perhaps her future releases will be more ground breaking but until then I’m stuck with endless plays of ‘Remedy’ on Radio 1.

Come on Little Boots what happened to the nerdy girl with the tenori-on in the sparkly dress?

Ok, so not a real earthquake…just Little Boots next single…Earthquake. It is the next single to be released on Novemeber 16th off of the album, Illuminations. Little Boots is one of the many rising stars that I have been obsessing over since I first heard her sing Meddle.

She has already swept through the US with her release New in Town. The video was shot in downtown Los Angeles. Who knew you can break out into song and dance with LA bums. It’s fantastic-al! But what did you expect…Little Boots is all about the show! Plus, she is GREAT live. Youtube some of the videos if you like, and while you are at it download the album from Itunes or where ever you get your music from!

Oh yeah and if you don’t know what that thing is, that little box she is always playing with…take that how you want…it is called a Tenorion. I want one! It does pretty much everything to create music…all in one great little square.

Here is the song, Earthquake, remixed by Gold Panda.

A primeira paixão a gente nunca esquece!

Mas lembro que era uma “viagem” ouvir “Fearless”, “Us and Them”, “Time”, “One of These Days”, “In the Flesh”, “the Thin Ice”, com aquela febre alta; acho que deve ser alguma coisa similar a uma viagem de LCD.

So little boot’s album was released ages ago (8th of June). I have just received it. I should probably consider other forms of delivery. Carrier pigeons just aren’t as quick as they used to be. hmmm.

Because of the delay most of you probably know how good ‘Hands’ is. For those who don’t bathe yourselves in the glory of this:

Is she in fact the embarrassing little sister of Lady GaGa?

I think the world would be a better place if this rather convincing rumour was true; imagine the family meals! Imagine the awkward double-dates! Imagine the sound that must emanate from Lady GaGa’s bedroom in the darkness of night! Can’t imagine the sound? I’ll give you a hint: It’s the sound of flesh and bones, crunched, and devoured.

What do you call it when the man who gave candidate Obama instant (pseudo)-credibility in both foreign policy and “bipartisanship” by endorsing him goes on the record as being very much against Obama’s massive-debt-creating economic policies?

The mainstream media calls it a “non-story.” But people should know that Colin Powell – who is as responsible as anyone short of Beelzebub for getting Obama elected president – is now opposing the guy he championed.

Powell airs doubts on Obama agenda

By Jon Ward

July 3, 2009

Colin Powell, one of President Obama’s most prominent Republican supporters, expressed concern Friday that the president’s ambitious blitz of costly initiatives may be enlarging the size of government and the federal debt too much.

“I’m concerned at the number of programs that are being presented, the bills associated with these programs and the additional government that will be needed to execute them,” Mr. Powell said in an excerpt of an interview with CNN’s John King, released by the network Friday morning.

Mr. Powell, a retired U.S. army general who rose to political prominence after a long and accomplished military career, said that health care reform and many of Mr. Obama’s other initiatives are “important” to Americans.

But, he said, “one of the cautions that has to be given to the president — and I’ve talked to some of his people about this — is that you can’t have so many things on the table that you can’t absorb it all.”

“And we can’t pay for it all,” said Mr. Powell, who was the first African-American to serve as secretary of state, under former President George W. Bush. He was also national security adviser to President Reagan, and was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under President George H.W. Bush from 1989 to 1993.

You’re a little late coming to the game, Colin. Business leaders have been saying this – based on what Obama said he’d do as president – well before Obama was even elected:

Chief Executive Magazine’s most recent polling of 751 CEOs shows that GOP presidential candidate John McCain is the preferred choice for CEOs. According to the poll, which is featured on the cover of Chief Executive’s most recent issue, by a four-to-one margin, CEOs support Senator John McCain over Senator Barack Obama. Moreover, 74 percent of the executives say they fear that an Obama presidency would be disastrous for the country. [...]

In expressing their rejection of Senator Obama, some CEOs who responded to the survey went as far as to say that “some of his programs would bankrupt the country within three years, if implemented.” In fact, the poll highlights that Obama’s tax policies, which scored the lowest grade in the poll, are particularly unpopular among CEOs.

There is no question that Colin Powell’s backing of Barack Obama at a critical point in the campaign gave Obama instant foreign policy “street cred,” while his being an ostensible “Republican” allowed Obama to proclaim himself as “bipartisan.” It followed in the wake of controversy surrounding Obama’s now-annihilated “without preconditions” policy on Iran. And it underscored the media’s biased hypocrisy in their totally ignoring the fact that 300 generals and admirals had officially endorsed John McCain.

Obama has already proven both completely false. Even the uber-lib of all uber-lib media – MSNBC – now claims in a story breaking today that Obama “misread” the situation in Honduras and “underestimated how fearful the Honduran elite and the military were of ousted President Manuel Zelaya and his ally President Hugo Chávez of Venezuela.”

Obama utterly failed to offer the people support in Iran when they came out en mass to denounce the fraud in a sham election because he doesn’t want to “meddle,” and then he couldn’t wait to “meddle” in Honduras. His terrible-to-begin-with policy on Iran (for which he was justifiably called out by then presidential candidate Hillary Clinton) is now in shambles. He was rightly labeled “cowardly” by the international press for his silence on Iran. So he then reacts by screwing up so badly on Honduras?

Obama went from utterly failing in Iran by timidly refusing to condemn a totalitarian and rogue regime to utterly failing in Honduras for “boldly” standing up for a dictator supported by the chief rivals of the United States in the region (Venezuela and Cuba)

Roger Simon is right to ask – given the Obama position on the two countries – if Obama is “objectively pro-fascist.” Frankly, that is the only policy position that even makes sense right now, coming from the Obama White House.

I have been arguing for over a year that a Barack Obama presidency would guarantee a nuclear-armed Iran — which will be a foreign policy disaster and a massive threat to what little stability there is in the Middle East. And I see nothing that doesn’t make me more confident of that impending disaster than ever.

Meanwhile, North Korea – which fired seven UN-banned Scud missiles to help Obama celebrate the July 4th holiday – continues to demonstrate that it has no respect for Barack Obama. It is now readily obvious that the Obama administration has utterly failed in North Korea as well. The fact of the matter is, “North Korea’s Kim Jong Il has challenged President Obama more in four months than he did President George W. Bush in eight years.”

And Obama’s shutting out Republicans from pretty much everything proves he has no “bipartisanship” in his soul. He has rather lurched so far to the left that it is frightening.

Obama was THE most liberal senator in Congress. Furthermore, his connections to far-leftist radicals were broad and deep. Anyone who thought he wouldn’t be THE most liberal president in history was a fool from the getgo.

So much for any credibility that Colin Powell’s endorsement “bequeathed” on Barack Obama.

Colin Powell’s criticism of Obama’s policies strangely did not include either comments as to Obama’s foreign policy or his total lack of moderate bipartisanship. Rather he focused on economic policy. In doing so, Powell joins a growing chorus of progressives who are now increasingly beginning to worry that Obama’s spending will create a “debt tsunami” for the country.

The editorial board of the liberal Washington Post earlier wrote:

To put it bluntly, the fiscal policy of the United States is unsustainable. Debt is growing faster than gross domestic product. Under the CBO’s most realistic scenario, the publicly held debt of the U.S. government will reach 82 percent of GDP by 2019 — roughly double what it was in 2008. By 2026, spiraling interest payments would push the debt above its all-time peak (set just after World War II) of 113 percent of GDP. It would reach 200 percent of GDP in 2038.

Barack Obama is a failure on foreign policy. He is a failure as a moderate bipartisan leader. And he is a failure on the domestic economy.

We can now confidently proclaim as a FACT that Colin Powell should be ashamed for his support of Obama. Way to go, Colin.

“If you have 535 congressmen and senators, all of whom know nothing about building cars and have other larger interests in mind, telling GM and Chrysler how to design, build and sell cars — they’re almost guaranteed to fail.”

This quote was pulled from an NPR report, which revealed another “uh-oh” moment for the government’s auto bailout. The film Citizen McCaw reminded us that McCaw’s purchase of the Santa Barbara News-Press may have led to similar reports, especially considering “Nipper’s” experiential credentials in the ways of news journalism.

It makes complete sense – if you like food, buy a newspaper. So the government says, “We liked the economy better before the decline, let’s buy car companies.” The government now has a larger stake in the car business, and as owners has the right to “meddle” in business decisions.

The chapter we read on character describes virtue or character ethics in the most simplistic terms when it says we ought to leave the tough ethical decisions to individuals who have a credible history of good judgment and strong moral, ethical conduct – either that or think about what decision those people might make in a given situation.

The problem here is that neither the government nor the auto industry is proving their ability to run the business. While the industry itself has a history of success (until now), the government has the money and the interest. Things has changed so quickly, and government involvement in the private sector has increased, prompting questions of ethics and causing Americans to wonder, “Who’s in charger here?”

She arrived on the scene promising us a big ballast of unapologetic pop music. And we believed her. Promoted her. And even thought she was cute. She was in the right direction. She had the disco balls. She had the Atari triangles. She even had unicorns roaming around her. The songs that surfaced promised a smooth direction into pop path. Even when we thought “Meddle” was bit dry. We blamed it on the early progress of an artist. We believed her. Why wouldn’t we, she plays an Japanese instrument called the Tenori-on.

But, from there on it was all downhill. The highly-anticipated BBC-boasted album Hands came out and it was more Ruby Blue, less Overpowered. More gold-fluff less Goldfrapp. We’re not saying it’s not all there, but it’s hardly Robyn-esque truimph.

It all started with the music video for her make-or-break single – “New In Town.” Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good song. But, the video is so overproduced. It’s a Los Angeles kind of video for a song that would have been fine being filmed in an East London artist’s little apartment. It stalled at #13 in the UK.

Then came the album. Not what was expected. The electro is there. The pop less so. It sounds like a Pet Shop Boys fan with really good mixing software trying to make it on MySpace. Maybe that’s what she is. But, Hands just sounds like the album that Siobhan Donaghy would shelve herself.

Then came her decision to release “Remedy” as a second single. It’s one of the weakest tracks on the album. A Freemasons couldn’t save it. The video is set to debut soon and we’ll see if this saves it. But, our bets are that it won’t. Somewhere between MySpace and “New In Town” she lost it. On her new American EP Illuminations she ditched the unicorns for a Britney look (Above). Let’s see if it works for her.

With the recent election in Iran and the inevitable win of President Ahmadinejad (his name is so dam

With the recent election in Iran and the inevitable win of President Ahmadinejad (his name is so dam hard to spell), it has erupted in riots and protests across Iran from the opposition. The supporters of the rival Mir Hossein Mousavi have stormed the streets even with threats from the government threatening to use force.

Many Iranians view the election as a ‘rigged’ election and a sham. President Ahmadinejad has won his second election with a landslide of a victory. The protests that are still occuring today are due to President Ahmadinejad’s victory.

Obama says that the voices of the protesting Iranians should be heard and certainly not ignored. But he does not wish to meddle in Iranian affairs due to the criticism that the United States of America has earned as an ‘enemy’ to the Islamic world, especially with US – Iranian relations.

Obama faces much opposition and has increasing pressure on him to support the protesters, including criticism from Republican John McCain.

“He should speak out that this is a corrupt, fraud, sham of an election.”

The opposition calls for a complete re-election in order to see a fair win between the two main candidates in the Iranian election. Much of the opposition took to the roof-tops in order to protest the election – many say that a scene like this has never been seen in Iran since the rule of the Shah.

‘Good job’, Obama

I think if Obama really wants ‘change’, then he needs to stop meddling in the affairs of the Middle East. He made a very strong and thoughtful decision to leave Iran in Iran’s hands.

Whether this election was a fraud or not, what has happened has happened. Attempting to cause a full re-election will end in failure, as with the authoritarian rule of Iran, such a thing is unlikely to happen.

Although Obama will face much criticism for doing this, he should stick with his words and see them through. I’m glad that Obama chooses to think before he makes a move, unlike his predecessor.

• \MAY-lay\ • noun

: a confused struggle; especially : a hand-to-hand fight among several people
[Ro] busculadă, încăierare

Exemplu în context:
The shoppers’ voices grew tense as they argued, and for a moment I feared that a melee might erupt.
