The Right Touch A Christian missionary who ran a free clinic in a poor neighborhood of a third world

The Right Touch

A Christian missionary who ran a free clinic in a poor neighborhood of a third world country was surprised one day to discover that the lines in front of his clinic were longer than those in front of the new and more modern governmental clinic down the street. He determined to watch on a daily basis to see if this situation continued. It did. He honestly found it very difficult to understand how people would prefer his dingy little mission to the bright, well equipped one up the street.

Finally, one day he asked a regular patient why he came to the mission. “Why do you come here instead of going to the government clinic? Their lines are shorter, the facility is brighter, more modern and well equipped.”

The patient was surprisingly direct. He said, “The treatment we get here is about the same as what we get up the street. However, here the touch is different. “

Having heard this account many years ago I have had a long time to reflect upon it. While I believe there are probably other differences between those who do a job vs. those who pursue their vocations as a ministry I cannot quibble with this simple statement. When Christians serve others the touch is different because the motivations are different. First, they see such a service as a means of glorifying Christ. Second, they see those to whom they minister not in biological terms but as having the impress of the image of God within them. Third, they believe they are to serve the world as they would serve Christ. All other motivations of service pale in comparison to these motivations in actual practice.

A few weeks ago a young woman who ministers to struggling young people in trouble shared her ministry at our church. This young woman serves with the barest minimum of financial support. She does it because she believes this is what God sends her to do.

She shared in general on the circumstances of the young people to whom she ministers. She told of some of the challenges they face. She spoke of the abuses they endure. She told about their prayers, the faith they exhibit and their joy in finding love in community. As she spoke, the tears began to flow both from her and from the congregation. Sharing the warmth of the moment with them I heard the still small voice within say, “Ah…this is real…this is what it is all about…basic compassion and the sincere gift of self.” This young woman, whom I know has had amazingly challenging physical struggles herself, has tapped the power of God’s presence and life.

General society is very critical of Christians. Sometimes they have valid reasons for being critical. However, from where I have lived in the last 60 + years among Christians the story is different.

I find that Christian people set the pace for the most admirable people in the world. They are compassionate, giving and reverent about life, about people and our Creator. Christians are likewise generally intelligent, creative, thoughtful and give of their time and resources generously. They are people of both head and heart. It is not rare to experience the spontaneous and genuine outburst of sincere tears and serendipitous joy as I have served among them.

It is plain to me that Christians I have known have been the most natural, forgiving and open people I have ever known. Their charities and efforts have a long history of universally impacting the world and every culture for the enhancement of the human race. This is more than can be said for many, if any, single groups of people.

From community to community Christians are mixed and diverse. However, there is one chord that binds them together. That chord is the Spirit of Christ.

Over the years I have I have lived among all types of Christians and non Christians. Furthermore, I have some very likable, intelligent and cultured friends who are non-Christians. However, I prefer the company of the most uncomplicated believer. It is always a gift to me to sit among Christians who openly live and express their faith even when I can see their foibles. They are simply people who, like me, who understand their need for mercy and grace. Why wouldn’t I feel this way? After all, they are my true family.

Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. I Peter 3:10

Today is a “two-fer” day. We have the guest post of my sister-in-law, N, who loves Candy Corn (I do not) as you will soon see, and all I can tell you about Buy a Doughnut Day is that I did, yesterday, go to Tim Horton’s, that Grand Canadian Institution, and bought a snackpack of Timbits (more variety – I like variety) with the goodly intention of taking pictures of them before I ate them. Unfortunately, events and my very sick child conspired against me and I never got out the camera. In fact, I scarfed down my dinner, including my Timbits, and went to bed because the poor little guy couldn’t sleep unless he was being cuddled. Hence, today’s post is both late and lame (at least on my part – N’s is pretty stellar) AND pictureless (well, except for the picture from the Tim Horton’s Website)

This is the picture of donuts from the Tim Hortons website.

Candy Corn:

(Editor’s Note: I did valiantly attempt to buy candy corn last night but the medical clinic next to my usual grocery store [where I happen to know for a fact that they carry candy corn] was full and so I had to take baby G to a different medical clinic and the grocery store there did NOT have candy corn! I could not believe my eyes – but there you have it! This is why I don’t normally shop there. They never have anything I want.)

Candy corn is a seasonal candy which, much to my dismay, only ever makes an appearance during the fall season around Halloween and Thanksgiving. The original candy corn was created in the 1800’s by the Wunderle Candy Company. It is a delicious confection made mostly of sugar, corn syrup and honey but also includes fondant and marshmallow. Fondant is that creamy sugary blend that one would find in a Cadbury egg for example. If you don’t know what marshmallow is, you’re crazy and have no business reading this blog. How does one recognize this yummy treat? Well, it looks like corn! Shaped just like a corn kernel (or an isoceles triangle) the bottom (which is the small tip) is white, the center is orange and the top is yellow. This is the typical color scheme though some have tried to add new colors and flavours to the original candy corn. Do not be fooled by these impostors! Go for the original!

As a sugar addict who cannot resist sugary temptation when it beckons me, candy corn is my heroin. I can’t help myself and I am ashamed. I can eat it by the pound and still want more. What is the appeal you ask? I will tell you. Clearly, candy corn is not chocolate but it is sugary goodness nonetheless and therefore will always have a special place reserved for it in my belly. It is not a hard candy but neither is it soft. It is perfect with its kernel-sized, perfect balance of squishy, melt in your mouth delectability. It accommodates every candy lover’s, candy expectations. If you like hard candy, you can suck on it until it gloriously dissolves in your mouth. (Although that sounds pretty suggestive). If you are a lover of soft candy you can bite right into it without the threat of a chipped tooth. If labour-intensive candy is what gets you going then you can throw in a mouthful and chew till your jaw hurts since they also have a kind of chewy side to them. If you like to play with your food as most children do, then eat it color by color or from top to bottom. If you enjoy a challenge you can even desperately try to split it right up the middle, dissecting the layers of yellow, orange and white goodness. Sadly, I must inform you however, that nine times out of ten, you will likely fail in that endeavour. Believe me, I’ve done the leg work on this one. So whatever it is you are looking for in your quest for a sugar fix, look no further than the Halloween decorated bulk aisle of your local grocer where you are bound to find the world’s most perfect candy!

On the very same day that we celebrate the passing of my Lolo 10 years ago the clinic opened its doo

On the very same day that we celebrate the passing of my Lolo 10 years ago the clinic opened its doors to the public and already received its first customer. The day started early with preparation for a lawyer who was scheduled to visit us at 9am. There were food, lots of it for breakfast and lunch. People from Gabi’s other business started coming in and we asked them to enjoy the food we ordered. People’s reaction were all the same; the place is nice and big. See our photos here.

We want to align ourselves with us many different channels as we can so we can drive a lot of traffic into the clinic. We’re telling all our friends and families to refer us to everybody they know. Thank you all for your support.

For the opening day, the only services we could offer were massage and physio therapies. Both practitioners received good reviews from staff and people so I was very happy to hear that. But at the end of the day, they were both tired from all the scheduled appointments they had. I felt bad at the end of the day and had to reassure them that for next time the schedule will be much better.

We had a good first week and in total there were two walk-ins. We’ll need to look for other ways to bring in people and we hope the Ryerson students coming back to school will generate more traffic. There are a lot of potentials to our clinic with its excellent location and brand new amenities. Soon we will be known in the downtown Toronto as the best physical rehab clinic around.

Personally, this venture scares me sometimes. Then I snap out of it quick because I remember everything in life that’s rewarding is a gamble in the beginning. I’m just thankful that I was given this opportunity by the Boss in heaven and what makes it even better is that I have a very understanding and supportive wife. Without her love and support, none of this would even make sense.

I wanted to document here that this clinic opened on the day I lost one of the most important people in my life. Lolo would’ve been very proud of what I’ve accomplished thus far. September used to mean sadness but now I can replace it with the feeling of new beginnings. Here, I dedicate this clinic to him in my own personal way. Should God allow it, this is not the biggest venture I will take part in. I will be bigger. But as always, I will always share my gained treasures in lessons learned with my friends, cousins and those who wants to learn.

By the way, last year 2008, end of September I was told to beat it by my old job. Now, a year later I own what could possibly be the biggest business I’ve been a part of with unlimited potentials. Thank you God. Thanks for everything.

OK, I’m just starting this post now and will be adding to it as I find more information.

I was curious to discover when and how the wellness hotel came to be. From the best research on the internet I could do, most of the earliest wellness hotels originated in Europe. But mostly there they are basically just spa’s. Stay tuned for more info on that subject. I’m still researching this.

There’s a site over at Wellness Hotel Review that appears to be promising. We’ll see what more they post in the weeks/months coming up. They have listed several wellness hotels which seem pretty darn cool. Mainly the wellness hotel in the U.S. started as hotels for patients receiving treatment at nearby medical facilities. Such as the Mayo Clinic in Rochester or any other large medical facility. You can almost always find a nice hotel (many actually) near these large medical complexes. But just because they’re near a medical clinic does not make them a wellness hotel.

I do think the line between what is exactly a wellness hotel or not should be a little more defined. Some claim to be in this category simply by having a spa. I like to think that they need to have more specific allegiance with a well known medical or health facility to be considered a health and wellness center or hotel.

One huge health and wellness institution is Cooper Aerobics. Cooper has many facilities and a great lodge and is a complete health and wellness conglomerate. They’re based out of Dallas so you’ll have to travel to Texas to check them out. More on that later.

This happened just days after pictures of Mommy Dearest, Kate Gosselin, were released as she lost her temper and spanked another of the sextuplets in the families driveway.

Jon was reported as saying that he didn’t know where Kate was. Was Jon’s lack of information due to his drug abuse or the couples apparent martial problems?

Many churches live in a state of defeat. We mumble and grumble about our size about what we can and

Many churches live in a state of defeat. We mumble and grumble about our size about what we can and cannot do. Sadly we miss out on opportunities to make an impact for the kingdom. We have believed the lie that we can do effective ministry when we get to a certain point or size. Yet God calls us to simply be faithful where we are at with what we have. So with that said let me share with you how God is moving in an incredible way in our missions program.

Last year myself along with several other members from our church went to Liberia Africa. At the time this was my third trip to Liberia. On this trip we visited with Danny Buegar who was the pastor of the United Christian Church of Monrovia. This is a church of 200 members. Their church building was simply made of some bamboo and thatched roof. During the rainy season the members would get wet during the service. But really to know more about this church you need to know more about Liberia.

Liberia ended a 14 year civil war just a few years ago. The war devastated the country. Unemployment is a staggering 85%. And even those who work do not make much. A doctor makes about 5 dollars a day. To say there is a health crisis would be an understatement. Nearly the whole population struggles with Malaria. Children under 5 have a 50/50 chance of survival. To compound health issues most Liberians do not have access to clean drinking water. Could things be worse? The answer is yes. Besides all the health problems, Liberia is a society of uneducated people. Nearly 3/4 of the children do not attend school. Spiritually Liberia has great needs. In a country where brutality has been the norm there is a great need for the peace that can only come from Christ. So that is some of the bad, but let me share some good.

For several years our church has helped out with some teaching and training teams and also have sent some supplies to Liberia to help the Liberian people. A year ago God was calling us to do more. And so we went to prayer and asked God to use us. And this is how He used us.

Our children had a VBS program in which they raised $8,000 to purchase three water systems to help clean water for Liberians. Shortly after this event we decided that we wanted to send a team to Liberia that would be more than a few teachers. We had been told by the Liberians that churches would send money to help them but very rarely would they send people. And of those people who came they only sent a few men. So we put together a team of 26 people. Half of that group was women. Knowing that the needs were great we decided first that we wanted to make sure that the Monrovia church would have a place where they could worship without getting wet. We also wanted to build a building that could be used as a school for children and we wanted this building to be a place where training could take place for other churches throughout Liberia. Besides the building we wanted to do more to help the people of Liberia. We wanted to get more water systems that could go to different places around Liberia and bring a medical team to this desperate country.

So that is a little of what we wanted to do. Let me share in just a nutshell what God provided and what He continues to do. Over this last year God provided over $150,000 in money and supplies. 5 water systems were purchased. Over $15,000 worth of tools were donated to help in the construction part of the church. Literally thousands of dollars of medical supplies were given to help towards a medical clinic. $30,000 was donated by individuals and churches to help towards the building project. Thousands of dollars worth of clothing, food, school books, VBS supplies, Bibles and Christian materials were donated and shipped to Liberia. A shipping container was purchased to send all these supplies.

Besides all of these funds and supplies going to Liberia the team of 26 people had to raise $3,000 each to make this trip. The team raised all their funds(some time when I have a chance I need to share how God provided in amazing ways.) But let me share with you what the team was able to accomplish. First we set up a medical clinic and saw in just 4 days over 600 Liberian people. We held a VBS which had 400 children attend. We held a woman’s conference that had over 100 women in attendance. During our visit we set up 5 water systems plus trained those who would be providing the water. Let me say that God was incredible. And we thank and praise him for all he has done.

So where does this leave us? Well we are still trying to finish the church/school building. We believe that with $45,000 more we will have this building up and serving the people of Monrovia. Right now all the foundation work is done. Our trip has also left us with a hunger to do more for the kingdom of God. We plan to send more medical teams in the future. We also want to help with the local churches to plant more churches and to provide more water systems. We believe that God has called us to be faithful and so we plan to dream big and see what God does. We would love for others to team up with us and do something incredible for the Lord. We would love to hear from you. Maybe God has you reading this post for the very reason of going to Liberia with us or helping us financially finish the building. Who knows but God has His plans. All we have to do is be faithful and He will do the rest.

When consumers get ‘Back to the Garden’ this spring, will it become ‘Back-Ache in

When consumers get ‘Back to the Garden’ this spring, will it become ‘Back-Ache in the Garden’?

Maybe you’ve read that gardening is vogue again. The origin of ‘vogue’ is associated with sailing in the 1500’s and meant “wave or course of success”. In modern times the phrase “in-Vogue” meant that a product or idea was written about in Vogue magazine. Gardening is timeless, and also been proven to be somewhat trendy. Staying in fashion has never been more important – even if you are not the type of person who ever cared about fashion or being fashionable.

Is this just another flavor-of-the-year to read about in all the trade industry magazines, email newsletters, and blogs, or will it bring real gardening back – I mean forward? Only time, and possibly your response to the emerging trend will tell.

Last week Trey Pittsenberger, The Blogging Nurseryman posted:

“Things have changed! Just a year ago with the economy booming, we had a different set of assumptions about how to appeal to a customer base that seemed to be giving up on gardening.

Here we sit today with a completely different set of circumstances. Interest seems to be growing in vegetable and fruit tree gardening, and I believe this may translate over into ornamental sales as well.”

I have no disagreement whatsoever with Trey’s observations and only hope to add some perspective and depth to the conversation. Let us remember that not every customer is or ever was alike in their interest in gardening. The true gardener was, is, and will always be around yet there will probably never again be enough of them to feed our industry at the level to which we have become accustomed. While the basic activity is gardening, the basic human need to be filled is not gardening. I fear some of our die-hard horticulturalist brethren may go off the deep end and return to the hortisnobbery of the 70’s. We need growth in horticulture, not to be shrouded in horticultural correctness. Even into the late 90’s Darrel Downey at Engineered Watering Solutions coined the phrase hortisexuals to fit some of us (you know who you are). Just this morning I read a letter from someone who signed, “Horticordially”. Now that is leaning toward blatent hortisnobbery if I have ever heard it. Let’s be careful not to get all techy and use our Latin on our customers again. You know how we hate it when the computer geeks do that to us. Their industry has almost saved us from all that geek talk. We have Bill Gates and Steve Jobs to thank for that.

This does not end with “do they or do they not” garden. Gardening is not a benefit of itself. Gardening is not a universal feature of anything else. It is an activity, an event, and often endures a process some people will sign-on for but others will not. It will become unfashionable perhaps more quickly than it became fashionable for some of those who do sign on. Let’s face it – many features of gardening are just plain unattractive to most people, even died-in-the-wool gardeners. What will happen when these neophytes encounter blistered palms, burning eyes (from salty sweat), pain, cuts, and bruises?

Now here’s a picture: Tim Elbert, owner of Four Seasons Nursery in Medford Oregon took on a delivery to a customer across town last spring. Tim arrived early to allow plenty of time for a meeting after the delivery. Tim offered to help plant the tree until he needed to leave for the meeting and asked the customer if he had a shovel. “I think I have a shovel”, the man replied, then emerged from his house fifteen minutes later with his only shovel – a fireplace shovel. Is this the level where many of your new customers will approach their newly found interest in gardening this spring? Yes, that is a rhetorical question.

Local medical clinics, emergency room physicians, and chiropractors lie in wait. We may be able to get new people into the garden, but will we get more of them down in the back, or get them to come back? It might depend more on what we tell them to expect than on what they find.

Get Fit and Get Paid

As the need for plants and related products has grown, our customers would race their formerly popular SUV into and through the parking lot to get the coveted front row parking space at the health club. Were they interested in exercise or not? Is that why we were supposed to avoid call gardening work? Perhaps one of the most successful recruiting messages at garden centers over the past few years promoted the “get fit and get paid” aspect of the job. That same message might also recruit some customers who have the same interest.

Consumer interest in buying plants and garden related products has grown over the years. As Trey observed, sales grew mainly in rather shallow (though real) justification for all the “pretty reasons”, rather than for physically or mentally healthy activity and outcomes associated with gardening. We have taken at face value what our customer tells us. There is nothing wrong with listening and giving them exactly what they ask for. By doing this we have stocked the benches, beds, and shelves and blissfully watched the product fill carts and cars and delivery trucks. It was not necessary to know or address why people really buy garden related products. As a result, we learned how to sell pretty – color, beauty, appearance, looks, sounds, fragrance, and envy and we have done that to the point of putting plants into a commodity status. Marketing in the green industry has been boiled down to giving consumers who have already decided to buy our product an unnecessarily better reason to buy. Discounts, coupons, bonus bucks, rebates, and all the bells and whistles of mindless giveaway marketing are on the tips of our tongues. You have been there and done that and have seen your peers and competitors do it. Sagging profitability reflects the misdirected effort.

It is within our power to change our own world if we could collectively create true knowledge and appreciation of the benefits of plants at a level all consumers can relate to. In other words – we must market to the lowest common denominator of desire first – the human primal instinct for plants (for fun). Marketing does not need to end there, but if we face the facts, it has been much more highly desirable to drive a new SUV than to use the family room on wheels than to take new plants home in it. Let us step it up while new cars are out of vogue. Use the reasons our customers buy in the first place to interest them in buying more often as well as to bring others into the garden fray and keep them there. We already have a killer-app product application (a phrase borrowed from the technology arena) and we did not use it.

The intrinsic or intangible benefits of plants are much more difficult to sell. Our industry is painfully shy of any practice at it. This is mostly because intangible benefits are difficult to identify. As the saying goes, “a problem identified is half solved” so let’s look at identifying the intangible benefits of plants.

Click here to go back and read my January 16, 2009 post about those instincts.

Plants and the process of using them creates positive feelings that meet basic emotional needs of humans. Fun, enjoyment, escape, relaxation, and peace are what people universally seek. When it comes to growing food in this economy security and control are certainly motives.

If you decide to begin marketing toward these primal needs, whose ads and emails will you copy? You can Steal This Idea, but not the implementation of it because there are so few examples. Is it time to roll up your sleeves and get to work a different way than you have become accustomed to?

Marketing effectively is all about the message that grows the market, not just sells product faster and cheaper in the market that is already there.

Reply to comment on this and tell how you are marketing to the basic human needs that are filled from the benefits of plants.

Saturday, February 14, 2009 ”People came to him from every quarter.” In tomorrow’

Saturday, February 14, 2009

”People came to him from every quarter.”

In tomorrow’s Gospel we read the following: “Moved with Pity, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, and said to him, “I do choose. Be made clean!” Immediately the leprosy left him and he was made clean. After sternly warning him, he sent him on his way at once, saying to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone; but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.” But he went out and began to proclaim freely, and to spread the word, so that Jesus could no longer go into a town openly, but stayed out in the country, and people came to him from every quarter.”

The people continued to come "from every quarter."

While I believe I have intellectually understood Jesus’ experience, I know that I never understood it from the level of my own experience…until now. This now has been the experience of the Medical Mission Team in Sierra Leone. The people continued to come…”from every quarter.”

Medical Mission Team members continue to see the people.

Part of the reason this is only my third blog (and my last from Sierra Leone) is that the people continued to come. When we finally reached the point that we had to stop, we then would embark on a journey back to the hotel that could take anywhere between one and one half to three hours. Then we would join together for dinner, which could take at the very least another two hours, and then it was off to bed to get ready for the next day.

It was originally planned that our group would travel to the Village of Njala to visit congregations in Njala and also in Bo. It was also planned for us to provide a morning clinic for the Village of Senehun. Since our arrival was cut short by the snowstorm in London, and the need was so great in Freetown, we split into two groups. One of the groups remained behind to serve those in Freetown, while another group went on and traveled to Njala, Senehun and Bo.

sierrale (Click on this link for a map of Sierra Leone. Freetown is on the Western Coast. Bo is about 100 miles inland to the east-southeast of Freetown in the Southern Region. Njala and Senehun (not on map) are along the way, about 25 miles to the northwest of Bo along the Taia River.)

Work continued in Freetown but at a much more manageable pace. Those that traveled experienced long distance travel in Sierra Leone which was an adventure in and of itself. the road was sometimes paved, often filled with potholes and sometimes only dirt. Sometimes we drove on the right side of the road and sometimes the left in order to avoid the holes. Sometimes we drove extremely fast, and sometimes at the demand of the group we traveled at an acceptable speed. At all times we felt the presence of God.

A view along the road to Njala

When we arrived at Njala, the group was greeted with a reception fit for a King – literally. Drummers, dancers, acrobats and a large crowd entertained the Mission Team.

Dancers welcomed us to Njala.

An exquisite dinner was later served. The Mission Team retired to their rooms to prepare for the next day’s clinic and it was off to bed just before midnight, as the generators were turned off at that time.

The next morning we left to set up a clinic at Senehun, where we were told 800 people had signed up to see the Doctors from America. With only 3 Nurses, a lay leader and 2 Pastors, we reached out to do what we could. As in Freetown, we were overwhelmed, but this experience was different. It was a country experience as opposed to an urban one. The language was different. This time the people spoke Mende. The illnesses also were different and the people seemed much more intense in their desire to see the “white doctors.” We did what we could and it was off to Bo.

Perhaps one of the most interesting experiences of the clinic was serving a man who said he was 120 years old…that’s correct, 120 years old! He was extremely proud and honored that the whole group wanted their pictures taken with him.

Life is tough in Sierra Leone, and it’s really hard to imagine anyone living to be 120, much less someone from Sierra Leone, but here he is…

After our return to Freetown, we rejoined the group for tours of local hospitals, including a children’s hospital.

Later that day, the community gathered at the Lutheran Center for the Installation of Kate Warn as Missionary from the NTNL Synod to the ELC Sierra Leone and to dedicate her newly built residence.

Today provided a visit to the Jubilee Center. The Center remains under construction and, while we’re learning not to predict its completion date, we remain hopeful as a new contractor has been hired to move the project forward and bring it to completion.

Tonight the Medical Mission Team will be hosted by Bishop Barnett at his home for dinner. Hopefully we’ll return early for bed and rest for our final day in Sierra leone. In the morning we will be sent to different congregations for worship and then return to the clinic for its dedication. Later in the afternoon we will ferry to the Airport in Lungi for the long trip home.

It is truly hard to describe the experience we have had in Sierra Leone. It has been challenging, exciting, rewarding, overwhelming, joyous, heartbreaking, and the list goes on. I am certain that every member of our Team has grown in ways they cannot fully comprehend. I am also fairly certain that everyone is looking forward to sharing not only what they have learned, but also the love they have received from our sistes and brothers in Sierra Leone.

As we return home, I ask for your prayers, not only for a safe journey home (and no snow storms in London – if I may be so bold), but our continuing ministry in Sierra Leone. God bless you and we look forward to seeing you all soon!

(Posted from a quick email sent to Anna and Steve)

I’ve made it back to Freetown from the back country and what a trip it was. We have no clue what isolation is like in the US – we were truly isolated for the last couple of days. The journey to and from Njala and Bo were just a portion of the adventure.

We also ran a clinic in Njala for a couple of hours and had over 800 people waiting to be seen. It was a wonderful opportunity to help but a little hair-raising as well.

I’m afraid that my next official blog entry will have to wait until tomorrow as I’ve been living on limited sleep, I’m wearing down and have been diagnosed by our team with bronchitis, and now I’m the one taking antibiotics. Actually, several others have developed similar symptoms and the good news is we have antibiotics and they appear to be working.

It’s 11:00 p.m. now and I’m heading for bed. We’ve got another early morning tomorrow for our last day, but the afternoon is free so I hope to write a final blog tomorrow.

Take care and will see you soon.

Monday, February 9, 2008 What a day! We opened the clinic today and by 8:00 am, when the first half

Monday, February 9, 2008

What a day!

We opened the clinic today and by 8:00 am, when the first half of the Medical Team arrived at the clinic, the patients were already lined up to see the Doctor. The line never ended. Patient after patient came. Illness after illness was diagnosed. Some things were easy to treat – “take two Tylenol and come back in a week.” Others took more serious medication. Still others were asked to come when more medication arrived from the States. Even some were sent away without treatment because they needed surgery and we could not help them.

If you remember from my last blog, due to our late arrival, we had 1,500 appointments scheduled over the next 3 days. That’s 1,500 appointments for a team of 1 Doctor, 4 Nurses, 1 Medical Technologist, 1 Bishop, 3 Pastors and 3 lay leaders. To help with this mission is a team from Sierra Leone including 1 Doctor, 1 Nurse (who is the Director of the clinic) and several medical students. Needless to say we are facing a tremendous challenge with a wonderful opportunity to make a difference.

The primary goal of our trip is to establish an on-going clinic in Calabatown (sort of a borough in Freetown), a secondary goal is to see patients, and the final goal is to connect with people throughout the Lutheran Church in Sierra Leone to offer a level of hope. As we journey, we also plan to see a few other clinics to learn more about the opportunities and resources that might exist.

The original plan (after our delay shortenend our visit by 4 days) was to see patients over 3 days, so we began the day with the overwhelming challenge of seeing 500 patients today! While none of us felt that goal was realistic, we did finish the day seeing over 350 patients. We’re optimistic that, with the systems we put in place throughout the day, we will be able to see even more tomorrow. We are also adjusting the schedule for the remaining 3 days in Freetown so that every one of the 1,500 patients will be seen by a Doctor before we leave.

The line of 500 people outside the clinic to see the Doctor was long.

Next time you’re frustrated for having to wait and see the Doctor, remember our brothers and sisters in Sierra Leone. The line was never shorter than in this photo, and at 6:00 pm, in darkness, we had to reschedule the remaining 150 patients. There was not one complaint and, to be honest, a few of us thought there might be a riot as they waited so patiently for so long and didn’t get to see anybody. They expressed real appreciation for what what we were about and everyone is more than willing to make do with what they have.

A patient receives a pre-exam.

The nurses really provided relief, taking care of the minor afflictions, leaving the more serious cases for the Doctors.

Look who's the newest Pharmacist!

And next time you wonder about the medications you have just been given, remember who the Pharmacist could be if you lived in Sierra Leone, and give thanks to God (and maybe a special prayer for those in Sierra Leone)!

It’s time to wrap this up and go to bed. The days are getting longer, the work is becoming a little more challenging, but the rewards continue to grow. Again, thank you for your thoughts, your prayers, and your support – God is making a difference though our work!
