Since getting my G1 a couple of months back, I hardly ever visited the Blogs and Newspapers I read a

Since getting my G1 a couple of months back, I hardly ever visited the Blogs and Newspapers I read at that time. Not because I stopped reading them, but because mobile feedreader are much more practical (!) and aesthetic (!) then almost all of their desktop counterparts. So when I visited thenextweb.com today, I was mildly suprised to find a custom toolbar at the bottom of their site very much like the one seen on Mashable.

After a bit of firebugging I found out, that they are using wibiyas wibar. While wibar comes packed with customizable features it misses the one crucial application: the (asynchronous) real time web. Of course you have real time notifications of the site owners tweets but that seems only to be useful for customers staying on the website. So up until now wibar seems to be not much more than a conduit toolbar only active on your site.

Mashables approach is totally different. They decided to use meebo bar (meeboim in the source code). For those who do not know meebo: Meebo is a webbased IM client able to connect to all major IM networks. Then they started Meebo Rooms and MeeboMe-Widgets. With meebo bar and targeted advertising they finally seem to have found a working business model. meebo bar is totally simplistic focusing on sharing and chatting only.

politik.netzkompetenz.at

The third competitor in the race to bring the real time web to your site is tweetboard. It “is a fun and engaging micro-forum type application for your website [and] also a powerful viral tool that engages your website visitors.” This is – of course – done via Twitter. Similar to Disqus, sharing in tweetboard happens naturally. Both services have also in common that discussion happens asynchronously with a tendency to real time.

While none of the three approaces appear to be perfect I think they are just the tip of the iceberg showing what is about to come. The question is not wether this will be the next “big thing” but when. But I guess sites like ReadWriteWeb will soon catch up and add their own Side-, Tool-, SiteBars.

With the arrival of the Motorola Droid and the Apple App Store milestone of surpassing 100,000 apps, the buzz around mobile apps has never been louder. All of this, mind you, in a little more than a year since the App Store launch.

But will mobile apps reach even greater heights? The popular answer is “yes,” although significant hurdles lie ahead.

[ Microsoft software chief Ray Ozzie says smartphone apps are overrated, CIO.com reports. | Tell that to Apple fans and their 10 great iPhone hobby apps. ]

Currently, Apple dominates the nascent mobile app market with 115,000 apps, according to Mobclix, which tracks mobile trends and operates a mobile ad marketplace. iPhone owners collectively download 100 million apps per month, whereas Android and RIM owners download 20 million and 300,000 per month, respectively, according to Mobclix data. Put another way, the average iPhone user (amazingly) downloads 11 apps per month.

The onslaught of mobile app downloads shows no signs of slowing, either. The recently released Motorola Droid already has 10,000 apps that run on it. Hot Droid apps include Twidroid for twittering, Meebo for Android for instant messaging, Google Voice for Mobile (which was banned from the App Store), among others.

The iPhone’s many game apps has made the smartphone a serious competitor to standalone game devices like the Sony PSP and Nintendo DS. Android is also emerging as a strong mobile gaming platform, even outperforming Apple, according to Mobclix. Apple has shown market-leading strength in social, entertainment, utility and navigation apps.

According to market research firm Gartner, the top 10 consumer app areas for 2012 will be: money transfer, location-based services, mobile search, mobile browsing, mobile health monitoring, mobile payment, near-field communication services, mobile advertising, mobile instant messaging, and mobile music.

Nevertheless, mobile apps face a few giant obstacles on their path to stardom. One hang up has nothing to do with smartphone innovations and killer apps-rather it’s the wireless coverage that many mobile apps depend on to deliver great customer experience.

One of the most popular iPhone regions is the San Francisco Bay Area, which is also home to a majority of iPhone app developers and, of course, Apple itself. But try tapping into AT&T’s 3G coverage while shuffling down Market Street in San Francisco. It’s almost impossible, rendering critical mobile apps that need the Internet to perform their functions practically useless.

What’s the problem? Verizon advertisements aside, AT&T does have 3G coverage in the San Francisco Bay Area. But the 3G network is as gridlocked as the Bay Bridge during commute hours. Consider this freakish stat: Since 2008, AT&T’s network in the San Francisco area has experienced a 3G data traffic increase of 2,000 percent. “Californians’ appetite for mobile broadband is unprecedented,” said Loretta Walker, AT&T’s vice president of external affairs for the Bay Area.

Hoping to get a handle on the problem, AT&T has invested nearly $65 million since 2008 to upgrade some 850 cell sites and improve its 3G wireless network in the San Francisco Bay Area. It’s a race of sorts to help iPhone customers gain better 3G wireless connectivity, improve performance and enhance in-building coverage.

Lackluster coverage is a threat to smartphones everywhere, and so AT&T plans to upgrade its 3G network nationwide with HSPA 7.2 technology, which should deliver considerably faster mobile broadband speeds. The upgrades are planned to begin in the fourth quarter, with completion expected in 2011, AT&T says. In the hot zone that is the San Francisco Bay Area, AT&T plans to roll out HSPA 7.2 next year.

Another hurdle: the mobile apps themselves. While iPhone apps are all the rage today, there’s the risk that they will burn out like so many tech fads. Or maybe they’ll simply carve out a niche in the great computing universe-far from the prophesized paradigm shift.

“Yes, iPhone has a lot of momentum, unquestionably,” Ray Ozzie, Microsoft’s chief software architect, told CNET at Microsoft’s Professional Developer’s Conference earlier this week. “But I think the phenomenon we’re in right now is the app phone. And if you look at the depth of apps that are on these phones, they’re not very deep. It’s not like Office or AutoCAD, where there are just thousands of man years that have gone into developing these apps. They’re relatively thin apps that are companions to some service.”

And apparently, this doesn’t refer to facebook Apps. Go figure. With all the advertising about an awesome lab, I figured we’d be playing jetman the entire time. I’m kidding of course.

So, online apps is apparently actually referring to a service called Google Documents. Which is frikken sweet, by the way. It’s what every single one of my group projects in highschool needed, because I always ended up doing all the writing. Always. Anyway, basically, google hosts a document for you, and you and nine buddies can edit this thing at the same time. You can actually watch live edits (this is more in the spreadsheet), and write something collaboratively. There are three options that I know of: A word document, a spread sheet and a faux powerpoint presentation. Overall, pretty cool.

I can imagine this will help with so much. I’m just thinking of ai-kon right now. What better way to get a team writing up a schedule? I will bring it up to the next meeting, and hopefully this will eliminate some of the headaches. This sort of thing is really going to streamline the way things are done, and I am excited. But it is only a matter of time before Google becomes sentient. It already runs our lives… I’m just saying get ready for the end.

For the second activity, I explored Meebo. Definitely a cool service, it lets you sing in with your meebo username, and signs you into all you different messenger applications, including facebook (though that one is having bugs). I have significantly fewer online friends now, but when I was in highschool… Well, I had a few online only friends. And of course, they all used different services, and I’d be running three different messenger apps and they would crash my 10gig computer. It was overall a good time.

These days I mostly use msn. I can’t even remember my other usernames, but I can definitely see the attraction of Meebo. To be honest, I’m surprised I didn’t hunt some service like this down back in the day. I’m pretty impressed, and Ic an see myself using it in the future.

Finding what to do with a lot of accounts and many friends on different networks, fed up of logging into each to chat and thinking of the torturous experience to manage each when friend on each network is unwilling to leave that or has friends on it. Think no more! multi messenger log in is just on your tips now. Meebo is a classy example of getting things done the right way. Make an account and log into it, get hold of each of your messenger service and multi chat with a lot of friends with ease. Supports many famous social networking chats including Facebook chat, Google Talk, Yahoo, and MSN among quite a few others. So next time you think of logging into multi messenger services think no more, log into your Meebo account and there you go.

Hi ya douchebags! Sit back, relax, and turn your head and cough because today we’re going to

Hi ya douchebags! Sit back, relax, and turn your head and cough because today we’re going to be talking about the good ‘ol US health care system…the best health care system in the world. Fuck yea!

Today, with subtle simplicity, I will shock and startle you with stagger statistics, and other things that start with the letter “s”. I’ll be using a calculator and ye ol’ noggin to add and subtract things from each other. And I’ll be laying down the law with information and stats you won’t get anywhere else…cause I’ll be making them up to prove my point. Just like a real life politician!!

So let’s get started! To help explain things I’ve brought along my friend. He’ll be playing the part of you, the 6 people who followed this link from my Facebook page, and asking the questions you want to know!!

“Hello, I’m Meebo, an alien from the planet Zardor, why do we need a new health care system?” Great question Meebo (but try to add a little more emotion next time!! Give me…give me, curious little alien!) First of all, the US health care system is expensive. Really expensive.

In 2008 the United States spent a combined $2.4 trillion dollars on health care. But how much money is that really? Well, if you took 2.4 trillion gallons of milk, you could fill the Grand Cany—no, I kid. But 2.4 trillion is a lot. It turns out it is over $7,000 per person in yearly health care costs. It’s 16% of the entire US GDP. And, most incredibly (and you aren’t gonna find this statistic anywhere else folks) the 2008 US health care costs are equal to the entire economic development aid package from ALL developed donor countries to ALL recipient developing nations for the past 50 years combined!!! Waaaaaahhhmmmp Waaahhhh. Depressing! Time to make myself a whiskey sour. (Find out more on the NHE Fact Sheet at the US Department of Health and Human Services website).

Well, I mean it could be wor--$4.4 trillion dollars by 2018?!!? WTF?!!? No, seriously, WTF! I'll be back, I'm gonna go out back and kill myself. Source: US Department of Health and Human Services

(A topic for another post to be sure, but this amount of development aid has actually grossly underfunded developing nations. As of 2007 the US devoted just .17% of GDP to aid. Much less than the average American would guess and despite the fact that on numerous occasions dating back to as early as 1970 the US committed to a funding level of .7% of GDP. This is not meant to bash the US, all other rich countries have failed to meet this same obligation).

We win!! Take that world! Source: www.wikipedia.org (2006)

“That is a lot. On Zardor, I have 2.4 trillion children. Things get kind of hectic during the holidays to say the least. But I bet your health care system is the best!”

Well Meebo, you would think it is, but it turns out standard health care doesn’t even cover the cost of a typical penis reduction surgery. And that’s tough news if your nickname is 12-inch Mitch.

The most commonly cited study among reporters in the “newspapers” and other “media” out there is the 2000 World Health Organization investigation that ranked the world’s health care systems. The good news is that if you’re game for living abroad you could have the cool breeze of the Mediterranean wind running through your hair on the beach of Cyprus and still have better health care than the US. The bad news is if you’re anywhere in Africa other than Morocco and have a cold, you’re pretty much gonna die. The US ranked 37th if you’re wondering, wedged between Costa Rica and Slovenia. Of course Costa Rica is a tropical paradise and Slovenia happens to have Italy as a neighbor. Meanwhile we’re over here wearing Canada as a hat.

“Wow, well tha—”

Wait, Meebo. There’s more! Let’s rattle off some more statistics to confuse and amaze our reading public.

Only 46% of percent of US doctors use those newfangled “electronic light box machines” to store medical records. Apparently Australia is full of hippies because the rate over on convict island is 95%.

Thank God Canada is always around to make us look good. Source: Commonwealth Fund

The 2009 US life expectancy is ranked #50 in the world according to the CIA Factbook, lower than Bosnia-Herzegovina which garnered this description from the CIA:

Oh Bosnia, you're so silly.

According to the same publication we ranked 180th in infant mortality. Yes, 180th!! Out of 224 countries! What’s that? O0000hhhhhh, the countries are ranked in order from highest to lowest infant mortality. So, so then…it’s good to be low. Hmmm, time for some CIA arithmetic!!! Let’s see 224 minus 180 divided by a staged moon landing multiplied by covering up the Kennedy assassination, oh 44! We rank 44th! Oh happy day, let’s see who’s above us this time…hhhmmm, some place called Wallis and Futuna (which is ripe to compete with Jamacia at the next Olympic bobsled competition), Cuba (which has a warning posted about human sex trafficking), and some country named after New Jersey, called…Jersey. I’m not making that up.

Are you real? Why haven't I seen you at the Olympics.

You don't need to read the rest, it doesn't get any less depressing.

"Eh, don't fuck wit me. Yea, go fuck ya motha, I'm from Jersey ya dick faced son-of-a-bitch."

In a study several years back ranking 14 of the richest countries in the world, the US ranked last in preventable deaths.

Source: "Measuring The Health Of Nations: Updating An Earlier Analysis", Ellen Nolte and C. Martin McKee, Health Affairs, 27, no. 1 (2008): 58-71

A more recent study showed even worse results:

Source: Timely Analysis of Immediate Health Policy Issues (August 2009)

And when 8 key measures of heath care are taken into account, as in this 1997 study by The World Health Organization, America ranks 72nd.

Iraq? Iraq! We were 3 places above fucking Iraq in 1997!?!?! Saddam Hussein was the president of Iraq in 1997! Good Lord Jesus. Perhaps things have changed a bit since then (I’m guessing Iraq is a total shit hole as far as health care goes these days), but does anyone really believe that America has actually floated up to the top of the metaphorical barrel to get our metaphorical apple bobbed by the metaphorical 8-year old Nebraskan boy at the metaphorical county fair? What the fuck am I talking about?!?! But more importantly, what the fuck is wrong with us?!??!

Americans can’t even poop right!!! Thanks to the people over at Ranking America I found this little gem.

Seriously, wtf. 72nd? Com'on guys, buy some fucking Imodium.

Seventy-second?!?!? There are seventy-one countries that know how to poop better than us?!?! Com’on man, let’s start eating our fucking Wheaties and getting some fiber in our diet.

Things are even worse if you happen to be Black Meebo. According to a often cited article in The New England Journal of Medicine, well, let’s just let this beautiful little graphic I made up speak for itself.

In all fairness Bangladish is home to Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus.

Yes, that’s right. The average black man in Harlem in 1990, could expect to die before the average man in Bangladesh. I could tell you what our friends over at the CIA World Factbook think about Bangladesh, but it would just depress you. What might depress you more is that things haven’t changed much since 1990. As reported in a 2006 paper presented at the American Medical Informatics Association’s Annual Symposium, this truly shocking fact is still shockingly true.

A recent report in The American Human Development Project’s Portrait of Louisiana, confirms that, well, basically Black People are fucked.

Uh...yea, that's not right.

“That’s horrible! I love Black People.”

Meebo, we all do, we all do.

The sad part is many Americans have no health insurance at all. As a 2008 report by the US Census Bureau points out, “Meanwhile, the number of people without health insurance coverage rose from 45.7 million in 2007 to 46.3 million in 2008.”

Source: US Census Bureau

“If our health care system is in such dire straights, why do some people call it the best health care system in the world?”

Right on cue Meebo! What they mean to say is that the American health care system is the best paying system in the world, if you’re a politician that is.

During the 2008 election cycle the industry contributed over $166 million to federal candidates. (Center for Responsible Politics).

OoooOOOOooo, colors! Source: Center for Responsible Politics

The total lobbying efforts (from the health insurance industry’s over 3,500 lobbies as of Oct. 26 2009) have totaled over $396 million. Looking at the totals since 1990, we are getting damn close to a billion dollars in insurance industry lobbying in the last 20 years. That’s second only behind the financial industry, which as we know, was at the heart of the worst economic collapse since the 1930’s. Downer!!! Let’s all go out to Chucky Cheese and…and just, you know, “fun” our woes away with root bear and ski ball!

Ok, that is a lot, but I just found out we could built an underwater train tunnel from New York to London for only $13 trillion. Source: Center for Responsible Politics.

“What can we do about it?”

Great body language Meebo! Strange as it sounds, we can take a page from our friends over in Cuba and China.

“Are you talking about Communism? I knew you were a Commie, that’s why you made me split the dinner bill with you last night!”

Well maybe if you didn’t order the steak Meebo, we wou—. I’m sorry Meebo. Let’s not fight. No, I’m not a Communist. I’m a Realist. Rimshot please! But to explain it, I have to call in another friend. Serious Bob.

Serious Bob, how are you feeling? Are you ready to enlighten us about world politics using your trademark non-humorous style? Serious Bob just nodded in a serious manner. He’ll be reading a an expert from his book Serious Bob Gets Serious, Seriously. Go for it Bob.

“You may have heard right-wing politicians banter about “Socialism” and “Communism” as if those are bad words. These forms of government are economically unfeasible—they lack the proper economic incentive structure for workers or corporations. Politically they are wrought with strife—they encroach on some of our fundamental freedoms regarding employment, investment, and settlement. And to be sure they have been poorly implemented throughout the years which has led to dictatorship and oppression. But as a fundamental philosophy—that members of a society should be willing to sacrifice—to pay more in taxes, or time, or effort, or otherwise offer up their well-being—in an attempt to help their neighbor—I think there is a lot Americans can learn.”

Well said Serious Bob. You may think we are on a slippery slop here, heading towards a discussion of universal health care. But why have universal health care when you can have galactical health care. It just rolls off the tongue doesn’t it. Go ahead, say it out loud, G-a-l-a-c-t-i-c-a-l. Oh man, I just love astronomy jokes.

Under our current system, we are actually closer to galactical health care than you might think. There are currently about 50 million Americans covered under Medicare and Medicaid, not to mention over a million servicemen and women in the US armed forces, and countless state and federal employees (actually someone was bored enough to count them and there are about 20 million). We’ve got a great start!!! We can do it, I believe in us! All we have to do is start paying for the other 236 million Americans and we’ll be all set!!

Source: Data 360 created this chart from US Census Bureau statistics.

Of course health insurance for all these fine folks is graciously paid right from our tax dollars. Which brings us to one of the biggest criticism of galactical health care—the fear that if implemented, it will bring about massive tax increases.

Meebo, are you awake?

“No this is boring, let’s go teepee the neighbor’s house.”

Listen Meebo, it’s time for your uncle 12-inch Mitch to give you a little lesson in economics. See Meebo, we are already paying a hidden “tax” under our current system. Of course you know about premiums and deductibles, but in addition to these costs your company is helping to subsidize the cost of your health care. The reason for this dates back decades, but essentially employers started offering health insurance as a benefit to lure the best and brightest to their organization. That’s how we ended up with the system that is in place now where most plain Janes and Jims get there coverage from their employer.

Employers do have to pay for your coverage and the money does have come from somewhere. But where? The answer, of course, is you. Maybe it is smaller cost of living adjustments or raises, perhaps it’s reduced benefits in other areas, your company might choose to hire less workers, or the money might simply be raised by charging higher prices for goods and services.

But ultimately you are fitting the bill. It is true that if the government took over your our health care system taxes would be higher, but that increase would be more than offset by the amount you would save due to decreased costs across industry (or increases in pay or other benefits). But what do the numbers really look like?

For starters, let’s think back to that number I gave you earlier. Health care in the United States costs $7,000 per person. Again, that cost manifests itself in the portion we currently pay in taxes for Medicaid and Medicaid (and other insurance for government and military employees) as well as the increased costs of goods and services (or decreased pay). But that $7,000 is misleading. It is the number that results when you calculate the total US health care costs and spread them across the total US population. But that’s a bit unfair. After all, children under 18 (a full quarter of the population) as well as the retired and unemployed aren’t shouldering any of this burden.

Just to keep you interested.

It’s the rest of us tax paying citizens that really have to pay for all this health care. So how much are we actually paying? According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics the US work force in 2007 was around 154 million. For comparison’s sake we can use the 2007 health care costs which are $2.2 trillion. Doing the math, each employed citizen of the US is spending about $14,000 on health care (a simple in-the-head calculation would also prove this—about half of the 307 million Americans work, therefore the burden shouldered by the actual workforce should be about double the larger per capita cost).

OK, so basically if you are reading this at work right now you will be thrilled to know you are spending a fully loaded Chevey Aveo per year on health care. According to 2007 US Census Bureau statistics the latest median household income (which was reported in 2007) was $50,740. Ignoring the fact that there are actually 2.59 persons per household (last reported in 2000), we can do a little math. The burden paid toward health care divided by the household income yields a “tax” rate of 27%.

Running the same calculation for our arch enemy Canada, which has an admittedly smaller population of 33 million, we get a burden of about $7,300 per working person. The average income in Canada in US PPP dollars is $38,000 which equates to a “tax” burden of 19%.

Say it now Meebo!

“But what about the wait times?”

Great work!

Just a little somethin' extra. Source: www.wikipedia.org

Ahhh yes Meebo, wait times. Critics argue that America’s system is clearly better than Canada’s because, well, we don’t have to wait as long! Right, except for the part where Canadians spend half as much per capita on health care (and, as I have just shown, 8% less in effective health care taxes per year) and have a system that is ranked 37 spots higher than ours in overall health quality (not to mention they have zero uninsured). So what we are basically saying is that America is like that guy who passes the bouncer an extra 20 bucks at the club to cut in line; only instead of heading up to the VIP lounge, he has to go down and sit in the basement. (“Hey, look where I’m going Canada! In the club! Yea, fuck you. See ya lat—What? That way? Down there…? Oooooohhhhhhhhhh. Pouty face.”)

But what about those wait times. Yes it is true wait times are longer in countries like Canada and the UK as shown by the chart below. (I experienced this recently while seeking out treatment during a holiday to Spain). But look at Germany, a country with universal, oops, sorry, galatical, health care. They rank number one in 3 out of the 4 wait times measured. New Zeland is shoring up the shutout of America by claiming the remaining wait time measure.

Source: Commonwealth Fund

Here Meebo, read that sheet of paper I just gave you.

“OK! This chart is interesting, but it seems to be focused on the rare cases when we need to see specialists or go in for surgery. What about if I just want to go to the doctor?”

I’m glad you asked. Here is the data from a survey involving patients of those same 6 countries when asked about wait times for doctor’s visits.

Source: Commonwealth Fund

So yes, the United States does beat out some countries when it comes to wait times. But when compared to other industrialized countries who have “figured it out” the argument against galatical health insurance on this basis is not founded in fact.

And even if it were, there are ways around it. Applications of efficiency improvement methods used in manufacturing processes have shown to be useful in reducing wait times and quality of care. Simple upgrades like TVs, books and magazines, or Wifi help patients tolerate the lines and reduce the amount of lost productivity. But there is a far more sophisticated model based on economic theory.

In some countries, such as Spain, there is a double provider option. The government offers health care to all citizens, this helps support the poor and those with pre-existing conditions or expensive medical needs, but in addition citizens are free to contract with private insurers. If you can afford it, and don’t like waiting, you pay the $20-$25 a month in private insurance and get to skip the long lines. If you are poor, or are going in for an expensive surgery, you tolerate the wait and get your government provided care.

This method, or a similar one, combines the best practices and benefits from both public and private insurance.

But, in cases you are still on the fence about galatical health care, maybe you should read this guy’s recently NY Times Op-Ed.

As Mr. Kristof points out, “Moreover, there is one American health statistic that is strikingly above average: life expectancy for Americans who have already reached the age of 65. At that point, they can expect to live longer than the average in industrialized countries. That’s because Americans above age 65 actually have universal health care coverage: Medicare. Suddenly, a diverse population with pockets of poverty is no longer such a drawback.”

“Ok, let’s wrap this up, I have to go back home and watch my favorite show, Celebrity Dance-Cooking on the Runway For Love.“

No problem Meebo. And no problem to you meebos. All you little meebos out there reading away. Take us away Serious Bob.

“Our health care system is broken, that’s easy enough to figure out. But updates to the current system will not help. Creating an online marketplace for those who are unemployed will not help. If you are poor and have spent your life lacking proper access to education how are you expected to navigate a complex online marketplace with different plans covering different options from different providers. If you are an insurance company and suddenly required to take on tens of thousands of patients with expensive pre-existing conditions, how are you expected to keep costs down. If you are a doctor who is reimbursed from insurance companies not based on a metric of patient wellness and quality of care, but on the number of procedures you perform, how can you be expected to be great. And if you are one of the over 150 million Americans that has company provided health insurance, the kind that is subsidized by the labor force, the kind that obfuscates and fails to internalize the real costs of health care into your daily decision making process, how can you be expected to make the proper choice between preventative care and needless doctor visits.

And if every other industrialized country in the world, if our servicemen and women, if our elderly and our poor, already rely on taxpayer funded health care, can we really paint it in the same light as dictatorial regimes in 1940’s Germany and Russia? Can we say that universal health care is Socialist and Communist? And if we can, then let us say it. Let us tell the American people that our closest allies and supporters are Socialists. Let us tell Britain, and Canada, and Germany, “You are Socialists.”

But I think I’ll know what they’ll say. I know what I would say. I would say, “Yes, I am.” I would say that everyone who resides under my flag is part of my country. I would say that I take care of my own and that my own take care of their neighbors; that they are willing to sacrifice what they want for that which their neighbor must have.

Is universal health care Orwellian? A little. But so are a lot of government programs. So is Medicare with its coverage of over 50 million Americans with our tax dollars. So is regulation of capital markets which stamps out unfettered capitalism…and also might have helped to prevent the worst global financial meltdown of our lifetime. So is the state and federal refusal to let millions of gay and lesbian Americans—Americans who have committed no crime, who pay their taxes, who risk their lives for our country—express their love through the act of marriage.

Universal health care may be Orwellian, but a system in which the very institutions the government is charged with overseeing and regulating are giving our politicians contributions in the hundreds of millions of dollars is worse than Orwellian, it’s corrupt. How can Congress defend Washingotn’s surveillance of our cell phone calls and violation of our civil liberties in the name of homeland security, yet in the same breath deny our right to equal, accessible, and affordable health care over fears of a hegemonic government?

If we view it as our government’s job to provide public schooling with taxpayer money; if it is their job to provide for our elderly American’s health in their final years with our public funds; indeed, if it is their job to protect us from harm domestically and abroad, to fly half-way around the world and engage in deadly warfare in the name of preventing violence on our home soil, with our money; if that is their job then how can we, with full hearts and clear eyes, really say it is not their job, and our responsibility, to provide health care for every American under those fifty stars.

If universal health care were drastically more expensive, or if the wait times really were unbearable; if high quality of care could not be supported in such a system, if it were unfair or bigoted, we would have reason to scoff. But it is none of these things. This is no longer an experiment. Universal health care has proven to be viable in every other industrialized nation in the world. It works, plain and simple.

Much of American politics, indeed politics in general, is fraught with missed opportunity. In many ways it is defined by missed opportunity. And we are forced to look back on past events and know that one day long ago, at a single moment in time there was a choice to be made. And that we made the wrong one. Let us not do that here. Universal health care is right, and it is coming. One day we will look back in curiosity that this inevitability seemed so foreign to us and we will wish with sad hearts that we could go back to make right what, in that moment long ago, was made wrong. Yes my friends, universal health care is right, and it is coming. And every day between this day and that is a wasted moment. It is wasted on the sickest among us. It is wasted on what could have been. It is wasted on America not living up to its potential as a country that paves the way for the rest of the world into the twenty-first century. Thank you, and good night.”

Thanks Bob. Wow, this is serious…

1/11/2009 23:56:14 Diego: Essa será a premissa do nosso novo blog

2/11/2009 00:10:36 Yuri: Que sorte, nossos leitores ficariam paranóicos

2/11/2009 00:13:27 Lucas: Quando deus criou o universo ele criou peixes

Seems to me that there is a big difference between hearing and listening. You can listen to someone and never really hear what it is that he or she is saying. Often times, in order to do this, we must listen to what others are NOT saying, as much or even more than what is coming out of their mouths.

All that being said, we are here not just to listen but to HEAR what it is that you have to say. Maybe you’re wrestling with some of the same questions that we are. Maybe you’re wrestling with something else. It doesn’t really matter. What matters is that, perhaps, this might be a place where… you can go where you will be heard, no matter what it is that you have to say. Our one requirement, as usual, is that you refrain from being mean to us. Feel free to disagree, to dialogue, or even ask for help, but please do so in a manner that is free from name-calling, derogatory remarks, or any other kinds of comments that really don’t do anybody any kind of good except to demonstrate that you are probably just really in need of one long giant bear hug.

So get talking. It’s really easy to do. Of course, you can leave a comment on a post, but if you’d like to discuss in real time, scroll down a little bit below and you’ll see the meebo widget we’ve installed on the left-hand side. Enter some text in the second box (Where it says “type here…” and you’re on your way. If we’re not around, feel free to leave us a message and we’ll get back to you.

Here’s to hearing…

I spend a lot of time each day communicating with colleagues and clients, by phone, email, on social

I spend a lot of time each day communicating with colleagues and clients, by phone, email, on social networks, and via the occasional fax. But when I need to have a short conversation and get an answer right away, instant messaging is hard to beat. Unfortunately, there are several IM protocols, and most of them don’t talk to each other. That’s why I use the multi-protocol IM software Adium on the Mac (s aapl) and Pidgin on the PC (s msft). I can also use a web-based alternative like Meebo or the new Imo.im.

VoxOx wants to take multi-system communication several steps further. In addition to the various IM protocols, it supports social networks (Facebook, MySpace and Twitter); SMS texting; faxing; private email; file sharing; video conversations; and voice connections. VoxOx also supports Skype messaging, although you have to have the Skype software running, which sort of defeats its purpose.

When you sign up for the service, you are assigned a telephone number in southern California (other locations are apparently on the way). Incoming calls to that number, and voice conversations between you and other VoxOx users, are free; other calls are charged at rates similar to other VoIP services. VoxOx has just begun offering flat-fee voice and texting plans, at prices it claims are significantly cheaper than Skype’s. VoxOx’s other services are free.

In recent days, VoxOx has released beta 2.0.5. The software has improved since I first tried it a year or so ago, but it is very definitely still a work in progress. Its dark background with white text theme is hard on the eyes and isn’t editable, and its contact manager has no provision for importing from or syncing with other address books.

VoxOx seems to be trying to collect the useful features from Skype, conferencing services, virtual PBX services, instant messaging and file sharing services, and putting them all in one place. It’s a pretty cool idea, and VoxOx is definitely worth trying, but I’m not quite ready to make it part of my daily workflow yet.

Have you used VoxOx? What did you think of it?

On Tuesday last week, I joined 400 others in the basement of the Hotel Kabuki city for FailCon, the first conference I’ve known to examine past failures to look for secrets to success. While you might think the valley is all about learning from failure, people still struggle to openly celebrate or even discuss failure, presumably at odds with the cultural preference for “winners”.

I’m a big fan of the TED presentations (and would love to go to one of these events), and so I was pleased to be reminded of the TED commandments (pictured right) for talks which include “speak of thy failures as well as thy successes”. Of course a few speakers couldn’t resist couching success in failure and Dave McClure was quick to shoot down panel members that followed the “my biggest failing is I work too hard” model. In Internet terms if you get more than a million users that’s usually a success story. I imagine Cassie Phillips had to dig a little to find speakers who would be a draw and talk honestly about past errors.

Lynne Johnson of the Advertising Research Foundation kicked things off with some advertising failure examples. I particularly liked the example of Sir James Dyson of vacuum cleaner fame, most are familiar with the 5000+ prototypes before inventing the dyson vac that doesn’t lose suction as it fills up. I didn’t know that he was a believer in consciously doing things the wrong way to learn a better way. Very right brain and anther example of how specialization can trap the mind in familiar ways of thinking.

Seth Sternberg and Sandy Jen, co-founders of Meebo, the popular (42M!) unified instant messaging platform, brought some sage advice on team building. Seth has learnt not to try and do everything himself and is a strong believer in putting together a team made up of people not like you. This is an elegant simplification for hiring complementary skills and behavioral characteristics. It doesn’t address the riddle of how to evaluate their skills (because, by definition, they’ll have skills you aren’t knowledgeable in) and whether the cultural fit will be there (as you’ll naturally be drawn to feel comfortable with people like you and like less those not like you).

I was lucky enough to attend Rotterdam School of Management in 1998. We had 100 students from 50 countries with no dominant ethnic group as no more than 6 came from any one country. This drove creativity but also incredible frustration because of varying cultural mores and communication capabilities. For example, in general, the southern Europeans had a more relaxed perspective on rules and attribution than the Northern Europeans and Americans. The coping method (and apparent route to greatest output) was typically that only 2-3 in any group of 4-6 would do 90% of the work. Whether this just indicated that most of us failed as facilitators or moderators, or whether it’s an unreasonable expectation to effectively bridge all team differences on a fast-paced project is still unclear to me. The answer, as if often the case, is probably in the gray middle, quickly assess the team makeup, recognize the likely team differences and identify any necessary coping mechanisms, start, and then isolate any disruptive influences not easily bridged.

Brandon Schauer, Experience Design Director at Adaptive Path made a beautifully clear and compelling presentation on how to improve use experiences. I thought Brandon must have been reading Daniel Pink’s A Whole New Mind with all the talk of left brain, right brand and how to get empathy into your business. There was a rather cool left-brain tool that tried to measure the customer value created by a new design which I’ll have to investigate further.

A fiery panel led by Larry Chiang followed, fuelled mainly by to and from between David Hornik; Partner, August Capital and Adeo Ressi; Founder, TheFunded.com (and previously of F&*ckedCompany.com from the .com days). Adeo was trying to get David to admit that VC’s have companies in their portfolios that are effectively walking dead that they pay little attention to and have mentally written off. Having been in two such companies, I had to side with Adeo on this one. It was nice to hear that even management blunders don’t preclude future funding in new ventures, but major integrity failures probably would. It wasn’t mentioned but burning bridges also tends to close off options in the VC communtity.

The final session before lunch (fortunately not after lunch) was led by Craig Jacoby, Partner at Cooley Godward Kronish LLC, one of the best-known law firms for startups in the valley. Unfortunately many entrepreneurs don’t know the basics when it comes to avoiding major legal SNAFUs. Craig provided some of the necessary legal downers, such as: don’t create your new business on someone else’s gear (in other words get a personal laptop and phone, and do your side projects on your time, at your place, with your equipment.) The other one, appropriate for the conflict-averse Bay Area crowd: have the difficult conversation about ownership sooner rather than later, so you don’t have different ideas about exactly how the percentages are defined, determined, and earned.

After lunch in the eerie, haunting and deserted world of Japan Town, Max Ventilla, co-founder of Aardvark suggested that entrepreneurs should actively seek to reduce risk. Given the inherently risky nature of startups it makes tremendous sense to evaluate risks and develop mitigation strategies, just as one should for any project management. He also stressed the need to hire A-players. Given all the current press on Ayn Rand driven by two new biographies, I’ve started thinking her philosophy might be the origin of the valley cliché about A’s move you forward, B’s hold you in place and C’s take you backwards. It’s no doubt delightful to dream of creating a Galtian utopia, or that the valley has somehow created the same, but the harsh reality is most people are by definition B’s, so either you’re not going to have enough employees, or your fooling yourself that you’re surrounded by A’s. I’m sure the answer is you have to hire the best you can find, but in the heat of the moment, when you’ve evaluated the candidates for an urgent position and none are ideal, does that really mean you should just not hire? Tough call.

Eric Marcoullier, co-founder of MyBlogLog told an authentic heart-wrenching story of realizing his business was wrong and having to fire 7 of 12 engineers. The quotable quote: “Misery is nature’s way of telling you to do something else”. You might be able to fool your investors and your colleagues but you can’t fool yourself. If you keep waking up dreading going to work, you know its time to make a change.

An interview with Max Levchin, founder of PayPal and founder and CEO of Slide, revealed an amusing metric of success: the success of his employees: would the cash they generated by them a house (Google-style), a car, a bike or just lunch?

My personal favorite of the day was an authentic, off-the-cuff presentation by Mark Pincus, CEO of Zynga, a hugely successful social gaming company, full of quotes like “don’t try to build your resume: you screwed that up when you became an entrepreneur, so just go for it”. An interesting tip from experience was always to negotiate for control, not valuation: he said he’d take 1/2 the valuation for more control. If it’s your ship you want to be able to steer it where you want to go, which may be different to what the investors want. I saw this with Abilizer, when we were forced into the general portal market by the investors because they believed we should “follow the money”. If we’d stayed in the less technically attractive HR market which we dominated, we may well have been much more successful than the also-ran we became competing with ~500 other dot coms in the general portal market.

Ali Moiz, of Peanut Labs presented start up screw up lessons including: #3: Funding. Too Frequent, Too Much. Makes you lazy. As I wrote in Year 2: Raise As Little As Possible, this is certainly my experience.

Miracles do happen. The standout stroke-of-luck story was related by Phil Libin, CEO of Evernote, the awesome online unified memory application with over two million users. Apparently last October, on the eve of shutting down the business due to lack of cash, Phil received an email at 3:23 am from a Swede, who loved the application and wondered if he was still looking for investors. $500,000 later, Phil’s lesson was never ignore emails from Sweden J Perhaps what he meant to say was don’t ever give up, you never know where help will come from.

My lesson of Change or Die was oft repeated. If you’re driving into a brick wall (a changed or non-responsive market) you’ve got to course correct. Interestingly Scott Rafer, CEO and Co-Founder of The Lookery spoke from the heart about having to shut down his business, and how he would not pivot in the future. The subtle distinction here is that a pivot is easily accomplished when you’re in the early stages shaping the business, but once you’re up and running and funded, and trying to scale, a pivot is nearly impossible. I certainly saw this at Abilizer and Edge Dynamics.

The after-party at 111 Minna was well attended. The San Francisco start up networking crowd always appears so hip compared to their staid colleagues in button-down shirts or polos and khakis on the peninsula. I can’t quite work out whether its just the effect of the suburbs or the type of events held in each location, as many of these startups are actually based in Palo Alto, Mountain View and other areas of the valley.

In summary, a most enjoyable day with a few extras to add to my 10 Lessons. As I mentioned in the preface to those lessons, everyone’s experience will vary with every new business, so this is no surprise. At the very least, great to bond through shared experiences with others inflicted with a passion for startups and entrepreneurship.

Recently moved from Upstate NY to Marin, tweeps helped find transport at www.shipyourreptiles.com for family gecko not allowed on plane. Picked SF because @kevinrose was single and easy, would have worked anywhere except LA which is way too Hollywood. Digg has two gs because Disney owned dig.com, half-joked about how catchy a one consonant, one vowel, two consonant word is like Buzz. Digg was first coded by someone at elance who they later hired. Love angels Marc Andreeson, Ron Conway, Reed Hoffman, for VCs looked more at who would be a great partner (Greylock, Highland Capital) than who had big pedigree (KPCB, Sequoia). Chapter in Sarah Lacy’s (@sarahcuda) Once Lucky, Twice Good book. Pay wall will be print’s doom. Impressed with CNN.com, likes the way Paranormal leveraged social media. Digg is a discovery mechanism, a news aggregator catering to niche interests, lies somewhere between the Twitter firehose of unvetted breaking news and five guys in a room vetting stories based on yesterday’s news. Google is for search, social media is for filtering. 10% of Digg users power relevance for the other 90%. Digg’s content ads appear in-stream, pricing based on popularity, if its gets digged, price goes down, high CTRs of 2-3%, if buried priced goes up, bad content ads gets priced out, fewer buries than diggs. (Similar to StumbleUpon’s offering) Watch for platform redesign from uberdigg one-size-fits-all to microdiggs focus on verticals. Digg is hiring and dog-friendly!

Curt Marvis, Lionsgate
Lionsgate has direct deals with XBox, PS3, ZillionTV and is on Boxee, TiVo and Roku via CinemaNow, awaiting more information on Yahoo! Connected TV (SDK out 1Q10). Founded CinemaNow 6/99, 9 years too early. Heads up Lionsgate VOD, traditional (broadcast, satellite), EST digital, Xbox, liaison to FearNet, Epix (Lionsgate/Paramount/MGM venture debutting on FiOS this Friday), Break.com. Works on new revenue models, webisodes, mobisodes, iPhone games. There is a big difference in philosophy between Silicon Valley and Hollywood. The technology business is based on versioning, programmers are never finished they just tweak it in the next version. In the content business you just don’t see Mad Man 1.0, 1.2, they wait til its perfect to release. This difference in mindset puts Hollywood at odds with Silicon Valley and worked against the early entrants of Paramount and Universal into digital, they saw it sucked and backed off paving the way for Broadcast.com, Real Networks.. In some ways CD-ROMs were the warm up act to the internet. In 2010, two of the most disruptive businesses in Hollywood are not even digital: Netflix delivers physical DVDs via the US Postal Service and Redbox via grocery store kiosks. Digital is only 4% of the studios revenue. Won’t hit $1B this year. Yet VG is huge. Reason why Lionsgate is moving into gaming. DECE, the digital entertainment content ecosystem, formerly the open market initiative, is a group of 50 companies working to create interoperability between devices…DVDs were released after 10 years of working on standardization..but standardization and interoperability are key to creating a broad base around digital distribution. Keychest, TV Everywhere moving in that direction…playshifting…pay once, use anywhere. Windows will start closing.

John Welch, Making Fun
Problem with Redbox is that right now it is not capturing the customer relationship like Netflix, will make it harder to transition to digital. Studios spend lots of money to stop piracy, pointless. Can’t stop piracy in a linear model. FB has made a lot of money giving game developers a platform to make money off of VG, the developers in turn buy ads on FB to drive traffic to their games. Free is the ultimate low, as far as I know, we’re not paying users yet, can’t teach users to pay for something new, must emerge them deeply first, free is a big funnel, tease them through the compulsion loop, play faster, want to do next thing now, embrace free, find a way.

Jon Potter, Digital Media Association
Ambassador organization for the digital media industry: webcasters, tech co, online music and video retailers, Board comprised of Apple, Best Buy/Napster, Live 365, Pandora, RealNetworks. Sponsor of the Digital Media Conference, Billboard Film & TV Music, CTIA, MUSEXPO, Streaming Media, SFMT, MEFCON, NARM, World Copyright Summit, NXNE, ACL, Digital Music Forum, Billboard Mobile Entertainment Live, Entertainment Merchant’s Association… Studios are not willing to experiment with business model, they wait til it’s perfect, why mess with their cash cow. Studios would like to leapfrog MSO to go direct to customer. Maybe that’s what Keychest is all about.

Mike Vorhaus, Magid Advisors
Hulu is DVR without skipping. 19% of US households use Netflix. 58% of 18-54y believe piracy is ok – need to make content a service, like gaming is become a service.

Scott Brown, Cisco Media Solutions Group
No longer a debate whether content or platform is king, the customer is king. Thee is no single magic bullet, must embrace multiple revenue streams – ad, subscription, premium, upgrades.. Here is Scott’s blog post: blogs.cisco.com

If featured in an Apple commercial, that’s your campaign. Too many low priced crapplications crowding the market.

It takes 3 months in the top 5 apps to make $10mm, no one has done that, 500,000 is a hit. Do the math 500,000 x $.99 x 70% developer = cap on marketing budget, spend more on legal cost. (in-app transactions on free apps important to create game as a service business, makes more sense than the $.99 one-off business model) iTunes works because of the 300mm credit cards on file. Content may be king, but distribution is G-D almighty. If you can’t figure out distribution, content is worth nothing. We will see metrics shift from counting installs to daus as a measure of engagement to cross-promote and drive traffic. US brands have always had a problem penetrating Asia, particularly Japan. Interesting to see what happens when Apple starts selling iPhone in China, competing against 1mm jailbroken phones that already exist there. China has 3 companies with $100mm+ from VG.

Kate Connally, AddictingGames, @kateconnally
Each generation has something that is there own, the phone is the under 20y screen, my job is to make sure that generation is entertained. We have the best free flash games on the web, we’re the online equivalent of the teenage movie. We’re not in this to prove something, we’re in this to make money. Incorporating music into causal game play is one of the most exciting things happening. Apple’s move to allow in-app transactions for free games is big. Will be interesting to see how this new engagement will be factored in to Apple’s deck. Every game distributed on iNetwork has cross-promotion for 5 other games. (Co-publishers can upload here) Also to ensure success work closely with Apple to identify type of apps they’re looking for. Brands can use gadgets to weave deeply into lives of fans. AG is a strong brand in english-speaking countries particularly the US (home page has 27mm monthly uniques), haven’t made push into Asia yet.

Allen Duan, MTV Networks
MTV is working with RealNetworks on games and apps. It’s an iterative process, ok to make mistakes. iTunes app store provides a great feedback loop, comments told us that South Park’s Mega-Millionaire, where the boys try to win one million yen, was missing a voice over element that was important to audience. Now have a Colbert app with segments of The Word, has charted in the Top Ten. China has the largest flash mobile phone user base. Own WW rights to SpongeBob, work with local team that understands the market.

Madeline Herdrich, Paramount Pictures Digital
Apps are great for theatrical marketing. Paramount is about to release a Star Trek Captain’s Log app where trekkies can interact on a daily basis, record voice, picture, travels, will interact with Star Trek MMO. (Many in the audience were very excited) Recently did deal with MSpot to provide movies on Sprint, Samsung’s large screen device – doing very well. Also make clips available to send as greeting cards. Working on original content for web and mobile. The economy slowed development down a bit but good days ahead. Phones with TV out will allow you to watch movies on phone on a TV set. As a member of DECE, Paramount backs the buy once, play anywhere business model.

Rani Cohen, TuneWiki
Picture Pandora with lyrics… Music has a $.99 problem, once the track is bought, what is the upsell. TuneWiki uses the track as a platform and sells game and lyrics products on top. With TuneWiki you can buy a karaoke track with the real band playing, not the copy band. Insisted on worldwide publishing rights for the lyrics so can sell in China and Japan where TuneWiki is expected to be huge.

Jason Davis, Disney.com
Game-changers on the horizon – 1. WiMax ubiquitous connection – providing a constant broadband connection everywhere and anywhere, 2. computing power plateaus (netbook trend) rethinking production of content, what makes sense for that platform, what’s good enough to bring costs in line with economics without compromising experience, 3. all consumer devices become network aware and PC disappears. 2y old son not talking yet but knows iTunes icon, how to launch it and can start and pause his favorite videos. He’s part of a generation growing up digital. Key media and digital trends over past 10 years: entertainment on demand(dvr, streaming, download), broadband, mobile, games, social media, UGC. For the younger kids the connected space is games, for the older kids it’s more about video and music sharing. Most don’t use cell phones to make calls. It’s about texting, photos, games, videos, music, web. Disney.com #1 mobile site in US – majority access site via iPod Touch. Disney is about family and kids, we care about rich unique content that doesn’t push boundaries but provides a safe fun experience that’s age-appropriate, we are a content provider in a connected world across all devices from those in your palm to those in the kitchen, car and beyond. Disney formula – (Content + Audience)/Digital Connection. Competition years ago was Barbie, Sesame Street, Hot Wheels, Yahtzee, Monopoly, Nick, Zelda, TV, phone… now it’s YouTube, Xbox, FreeRealms, Clone Wars, JustJaredJr, Mattel, Babycenter, Twitter. Nintendo once a competitor is now a partner – supermonetize Club Penguin on DS tie back to site, one of the top selling DS games. Disney.com is not just a website, but an online destination, an online theme park, an entertainment experience. Watch for Muppets holiday themed content, mom page for family travel, possibility shop, create paintings, comic books, mashups, animate… In first 5 weeks, 175,000 pieces of artwork were uploaded to site. Safe UGC for kids. Now Disney.com is an iPhone app with snap a photo fun… For the non-family fans of the Disney brand, there is @Disney023 geared toward the brand Disney, formed in 1923, this summer first D23 trekkie-like convention big hit. FB Alice in Wonderland for Tim Burton, Johnny Depp fanboys, 50,000 fans signed on at Comic-Con competition continuing to feed fandom for IP.

VCs keep a long blacklist. CEOs are fearful to share key insights on who best to partner with for funding. Recognized a market need for a subpeona-proof anonymous forum for CEOs to safely share unbiased information. Use gmail because its also subpeona-proof. Only CEOs allowed in the Club, each applicant is background checked, so far have 13,000 members. Not looking to monetize, only 1000 hits per month. If you see something on the public site, it’s likely not true, its a shill. The VCs on the top of the list love TheFunded because they see a lot more deals. Re: trends, happy to see the death of newspapers: landfill makers, forest killers, banking OPM and the combustion engine. Eventhough FAS 157 says Twitter is not worth $1B, rather worth $0, and in tough times failure is not an option (referencing yesterday’s FailCon) – its a great time to build! Yes, Build! Traction path: idea, team, prototype, launch, adoption, revenue, profitability. To launch TheFunded, invested $1500 for VC directory, made available to members-only as incentive to join, asked friends to populate with first 30 reviews. btw: Netflix marks to market salaries for all employees.

Kevin Yen, YouTube, @kevinyen
Heads up monetization for channel partners and branded entertainment. Channel partners find YouTube additive, reaches different people. Insight tool super-powerful analytics tells you demo of who is watching. When someone is searching for content, they’re engaged, they’re looking to go to another page, whereas when someone is watching a video, they’re in watching mode, more likely to click on the next video. YouTube is bullish on branded entertainment and you will start to see a lot of it. Industry is trying to figure out how to scale it to a $100-$200mm business. If channel partners integrate a brand, all they need to do is check a box. YouTube stars are in high demand, like Fred and Smosh. They are choosy about the projects they accept, know the value of they’re audience and won’t betray their fans by selling out. There is a set than can drive 1mm+ views, and a set that can drive 100,000+ views, and both sets are getting custom promotion work. Brands like Carl’s Jr and Jet Blue like using social media stars. The new FTC guidelines on blogger endorsements doesn’t apply to branded entertainment. The content is entertainment, it’s not the same as news or medical advice.

Anthony Soohoo, CBS Interactive
CBS is not on the boxes yet, not on Xbox, PS3, TiVo, Roku, Boxee, ZillionTV or Y! Measurement is a barrier . For branded entertainment, the challenge is putting the right content in front of the right audience, have 20 types of branded entertainment shows slated. Watch for Michael Cera’s Clark & Michael to make a comeback on TV.com. As far as paid v free, dual revenue stream, subscription comes up every recession, it will cycle back when ad rebounds, CBS is happy with ad model, offers a hybrid, sell shows via iTunes, DVDs, offer them free on TV.com. Some like ad-supported tv, web, others want to own. Will start to see some interactivity, has a place in fashion shows and red carpet events, watch for Victoria’s Secret happening in coming weeks. For brand awareness sometimes overlay works better. Metrics tracking viewership across all screens will be huge next year. Experimenting with 360 UGC tie-ins, did I Kissed a Girl singalong contest for the Grammy’s, winners won tickets and appeared on the CBS Morning Show.

60mm monthly uniques, 10mm in US. We’re a distributor, and syndicator, but don’t produce original content. DM, like YouTube, provide an audience that is additive to our MotionMakers, demo: high income, urban, techie. Re Hulu’s rumored paywall, Hulu is a DM partner, we love Hulu with its gorgeous interface, but the inventory is spotty, can’t always find all the episodes, might be worth it to some to pay for it. I remember when paid + music = ridiculous til iTunes provided a must have product. DM hosts contests all day long. For the MTV Awards, did a movie spoof UGC contest, very large submission numbers. Branded entertainment is here to stay, wouldn’t have said this 5 years ago, but the demand from advertisers is very strong, works well for marketers or they wouldn’t be asking for more. Demand is so strong, we’re doing a road show looking for a production partner. DM Motionmakers have been hired to produce commercials for brands, Coke, etc. DM takes pride is fostering talent. In the next month will be announcing a partnership for DM MotionMakers with a TV network.

Mitch Galbraith, Funny or Die
In the beginning made a decision to focus on making FOD a destination site to serve our celebrity principal partnerships, foster an environment for celebrity talent, frugal in-house production that never lets spending get ahead of web economics, in-house ad team. Would send out widgets to recruit in the wild and bring back to the site, would see traffic bumps of 15-70% depending on the virality of the video. Make $10mm a year, half of ad business is related to campaigns built around brands like McD, Norelco, Paramount… We did a wildly popular spot for EA Sports with Charlize Theron…another one for MoveOn.org got 2.5mm views, entertaining, funny with brand message. Make it good enough to mix into content pool, not in a sneaky way, its not misleading the public, they watch what they want to watch. Right now there are no standards for branded entertainment but there isa group of publishers and advertisers working on it. The Lindsay Lohan eHarmony spoof was not branded entertainment. Now that FOD is well-established as a premiere comedy video brand and distribution has matured, we’re starting to syndicate our low-cost high-quality comedy content across web, tv, film. 11/09 FOD is launching a YouTube channel. 1/10 FOD is debuting a half-hour show on HBO, and FOD’s first feature is in development. TV is a huge opportunity, excited that Boxee and Macrovision are forging a path but its all pretty nascent, not where we invest. Platform to discover talent, do look to develop talent and have sent producers on to SNL and Sony Pictures.

Stephen Condon, ATT Digital Media
On paywall, subscription is the flavor of the day, past experience says there is little money to be made from pay model apart from exclusive events not available elsewhere and those for niche audiences. That said, having a pay option sets a perceived value for the content, user might be feel better sitting through ads if the alternative is to pay $10. Looking forward to Macrovision’s (now Rovi’s) net guide on tv where you can search for program by name instead of just by day and time, and integrating personal video library. Technology right now is a huge problem, no one wants 4 remotes, want seamless connection to TV. Clickable video is tremendously impactful, lack of standards holding it up.

Tom DeLuca, Warner Home Video
Some budget are 100% online, some zero but mostly tv/web go hand in hand to be successful. Trying to get more efficient with spending, go beyond the banner, love the engagement on Meebo, saw it and said we’re in. Fan of mobile, LBS bluetooth marketing, couponing is untapped in US, looking to Asia. Innovation drives decision. Still an internal sell. Marketers feel more comfortable with TV buy. So pricing is key, budgets are very specific. Want to know if we pay this, then these will be our brand evangelists. There is a finite qualified audience and we know how much to pay for them. Expect pricing to stay consistent.

Jim Louderback, Revision3, @jlouderb
At the point where long and short form content is going over the top, web video on tv is here, will take off with Roku’s new offering focused on indies: Revision3, TWiT.tv, etc. Focused on emotional branding, where trusted host talks about sponsor, better reach to core group of millennial men, we get $80 CPMs for that. It’s not an impression unless it makes an impression. CPMs hold up when you deliver audience in a trusted way. Premium content is whatever the audience wants, J&J bought Babycenter because they wanted new baby moms. That’s premium content. Glam is half-premium, not specific enough within the women’s category.

Just finished a session on IM reference services that was actually very interesting. I really wasn’t expecting much on this topic assuming that there hasn’t been much released over the last year that is of much interest. It seems like more and more libraries are creating Meebo accounts for their IM reference services. I setup a Meebo account for our library last year with mixed success. We have had some students that have used, and appreciated, the service but the traffic hasn’t been very impressive. We are probably averaging about one IM reference transaction per day. I think this may simply be the nature of law students who require more time and detail in their reference questions than would be expected in an undergraduate environment.

What I found particularly interesting from this presentation is how to embed your IM chat widget into your OPAC without creating additional technical issues. A speaker from Nova Scotia described her problems with her campus IT on getting the widget included and then the further problems they had with Meebo when a chat session was spawned every time a student used the OPAC. They created a dynamic widget at first that required students to click on it before it would start a session. Eventually, they moved over to Libraryh3lp with offered some benefits over Meebo including allowing more than one librarian to sign in at any one time, keeping statistics, and avoiding the issues Meebo had with the OPAC.

Making Virtual Reference Multidimensional

Patrons typically don’t start their virtual reference session with their actual reference question

Virtual reference problems tend to be rooted in the attempt to replicate a real-life reference transaction

Did user study and found that IM was the most popular method of using a librarian followed by face-to-face
- No undergraduate student said they wanted to communicate via email

Ubiquitous use of chat widgets
- “Ask a librarian” page
- On database pages
- On LibGuides
- Also placed widget on OPAC

Results of placement
- Unexpected increase in use
- Technical issues
○ Problem with Meebo and placing the widget on OPAC
○ Eventually created a dynamic Meebo widget for the OPAC
§ Had reference schedule embedded into script
§ User would have to click on the widget to actually start a Meebo session
- Dropped individual IM accounts and used Meebo exclusively

LibraryH3lp
- Fee based IM chat service
- About $450 a year
- Can have more than one person sign in at a time

Problems integrating into WorldCat local service

Tips
- Place chat widgets at point of need
- Be aware of online environment of widget placement
- Experiment and share results
- Refresh Meebo accounts by logging into native interface
- Separate accounts for tracking purposes
