Alexandria Photography Workshop

September APW Meetup Update: 3 Shot Critique / Depth of Field Tutorial

Folks.

THe "new" Sanyo projector got good marks for color and brilliance rendition at the September meetup, and I should be getting a color calibrator from DataColor to review before the October meet.

This month we’ll be doing our "Three shot critique," If you’d like to work with a theme, try "The Color of Autumn." What colors does the fall evoke for you? Scarlet leaves? Orange pumpkins? Red apples at a farm stand? How about an amber glass of ale at an Octoberfest? Remember, it’s going to be cold soon and you’ll want to be shooting indoors…so get out and enjoy the cool weather.

You don’t have to shoot in the theme, though. Feel free to choose your own.

I’ll be talking a little bit about workflow before the critique, but the important thing to remember is to keep your original image files untouched. Always make copies of them before making changes. Consider them your "negatives" and protect them for the future. We’ll also talk about RAW v JPGs.

Let’s get those photos in by Sunday, October 25th, the end of the weekend before the meetup.

Send them to: apw(at)e357.net
Name them: FiistName_LastName_PhotoName.jpg

Ernest

Note: By sending in your image, you are granting the organizer(s) rights to reproduce the image either in print or in digital media for the express use in group events (eg critiques, showings), and on web pages. This does not give the organizer the right to sell your work, or grant license to other parties.

Alexandria, VA 22314 – USA

Wednesday, December 23 at 7:00 PM

Anche Firenze 5 stelle beppegrillo.it aderisce al No B- Day, la
adesioni.

With 2010 fast approaching, it’s definitely time for another OpenMusicMedia Toronto meetup. Bu

With 2010 fast approaching, it’s definitely time for another OpenMusicMedia Toronto meetup. Building on the success of our inaugural meet in September, we are going to cover the ongoing discussion about access vs. ownership and what it means to the music fan, the artist, and of course the industry as a whole.

With music services such as Spotify, MOG, Last.fm, and Grooveshark (only to name a few) increasing in popularity due to their ease in delivering music content as a seamless experience across both desktop and mobile devices – does this spell the end for iTunes and the whole notion of actually needing to own content?

The Globe and Mail recently took a look at Spotify and what it means for both the traditional and new players within the music industry. We are experiencing a transformative change in business models and the way music is consumed. Will subscription streaming services be a sustainable model? Will consumers pay for a bundling deal (ISPs, telcos) that gives them access on their computers and more importantly, on their mobile devices? Are there times when ownership is important? What are main benefits of the streaming model? Without a doubt, music streaming is here to stay and will likely co-exist with download service for the foreseeable future.

We are proud to have Greg Nisbet (founder of Toronto music startup Mediazoic) join us. Greg’s experience developing a real-time broadcast streaming platform and his work with various people in radio, the labels and technology will offer us a unique perspective as he kicks off the discussion for the evening.

Date: Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

Time: 5:30pm – 11pm (evening will start very casually with everyone enjoying food/drinks and connecting with each other before we dive into the group discussion at 6:30pm)

Location: The Pilot Tavern

22 Cumberland Street

Toronto, Ontario (view map)

RSVP: http://bit.ly/OMM_TO2

Background

What: OpenMusicMedia Toronto is a chance to get together on a semi-regular basis for drinks & conversation around the past, present and future intersection of music, media and digital culture. The purpose of the group will be for people with similar interests and passions to meet and discuss in a relaxed and open environment. There are no vested interests, no politics and no agendas.

Who: Open to music label folks, journalists, social media types, entrepreneurs, technologists/developers, music geeks, music bloggers and future thinkers.

Cost: The meetup is FREE and open to everyone. All we gratefully ask is if you can RSVP here.

Theme: Each meetup will feature a theme or topic that will drive the discussion for the evening. For our second meetup, Greg Nisbet (Mediazoic) will kick off the conversation regarding Access vs. Ownership of content

We look forward to seeing you come out, enjoy a drink, meet people passionate about music and contribute to the conversation! If you have any questions or need to contact us, please send us an email.

I’ve lots of things to update now since I have not updated my blog for almost a week=X. Hence, I am going to separate them into two different entries just to make me seem less long-winded and for readability.=)

NCT last week was pretty fruitful for me. Just from the lecture alone, I’ve learnt quite a lot of things about technology in business and work. I also get to know some interesting websites and I am going to share with you guys on my blog. Cheers!

I don’t know if this works for Singapore. Do you know there’s a website for you to share your books with others after you’ve read and you’ll be able to trace where it is later? The website is named “Bookcrossing”. I thought it was quite a cool idea. You just have to print out the number code from the website and slot it in the book. After that, you could just leave the book anywhere in the public (E.g. on bus, on the benches, in foodcourts, etc.) and if someone picks up your book, He/she will enter it into the website and you will be able to track where it goes to. And it was said that this happened in one country and the girl tracks that her book went all round the country. It’s really pretty nice to share books with people and even more fascinating to share with strangers that you don’t know. However, according to my teacher, one of our seniors did the same thing and when she went home to see if she could track the book; it was nowhere to be found. But well, it didn’t really surprise me. After all, not many Singaporeans know about this website and seriously, not many will keep a book that is found in the public. Perhaps that will only happen if the book is made of real gold.

URL: www.bookcrossing.com

For those who are interested, you can visit the URL above. Try it and tell me. I am really curious about this bookcrossing thing but I doubt I’ll try it. After all i do not have many books to spare.

Another interesting website that Ms Kwa introduced us is www.meetup.com . It is a place where one can find interest groups to meet up with. It ranges from studying group (I bet lots of students need this) to Taichi group to fans group (Fans of Korean celebrities look here). But it’s really sad when I can’t find my favourite pianist fans meet up group in this website.=( Perhaps Yiruma isn’t that famous in Singapore yet.

Seriously, I really got to say that Singapore is quite an uninteresting place with uninteresting people, or should I say audience? Have anyone heard for the Singapore Flash Mob Dance that was held in Raffles Place? Even though I wasn’t there, I saw the video on it which Ms Kwa showed us during our lecture. The response was pathetic. Especially when you compare it with the T-Mobile Dance held in Liverpool Street Station in London. The ideas are similar but the responses are very different. You will know what I mean after you see the two videos below.

The T-Mobile Dance

The SG Flash Mob Dance

Can you see the difference? Singaporeans are just walking past those dancers even though it’s really unusual for people to suddenly dance on the street or in the public. Okay, I should stop using “Singaporeans” but “we” since I am a Singaporean too. Should I say we are getting less observant or are we getting boring? Or perhaps we are just living in our own world?

However, I think some changes could be made to the Singapore Flash Mob Dance in order to have better responses. Instead of an open air Mob Dance, make it indoor. The music will be louder and more surrounded this way. Indoor also means lesser distractions (e.g. car noise, nature sounds). The selection of songs should be more interesting. Maybe a mixture of slow and fast songs will allow people to pay more attention to the Mob Dance. Well, just some opinions I have.

And saying about dance, it kinds of reminded me of the BK subservient chicken. It is really a good way of advertising as it is interactive and different. You seldom see such advertisement. For those who don’t know what I am talking about, visit http://www.bk.com/en/us/campaigns/subservient-chicken.html

Just type in commands such as “dance”, “sleep”, “sit”, etc. and you can see the chicken does what you want. This relates it back to BK’s tagline “Get the chicken the way you like.” or something to that.

Speaking of advertising and doing business, people are really innovative in doing all these online using the latest technology. Many companies now get their employees online to tweet and blog during their working hours. The old rules all now gone and technology is the thing now. However, there are still companies that prefer the traditional way and limit them to go online. Even SMS-ing is not allowed during work time. I seriously wonder how long will those traditional rules last. Everyone is now tweeting and Facebook-ing almost every day. If there are still companies that keep those traditional rules strict, I guess is sooner or later that everyone will start leaving. Who doesn’t want a job with high pay and all you have to do is just tweet about your company and build relationships with customers on Facebook?

Well, maybe not everyone now. But in 5 years’ time, I guess it will be the whole world.

Luckily, there are still some great companies who are establishing these new rules now. Here are the two of them:

Zappos – www.zappos.com

The Garden Slug – www.thegardenslug.com

And I just viewed “The Garden Slug” menu. The food looks nice! I really hope to eat there one day but isn’t it a little too far and inconvenient to get there?=(

Anyway, that’s how fruitful the lecture was last Wednesday=). Followed on were presentations about the future of things due to the technology. First was Aaron’s group which presented on “The Future of Music”. I like the prediction they had about online live concert. If such things really happened, i seriously won’t mind paying $10 to see my favourite idol’s live concert online. Even though the atmosphere won’t be the same but it’s better than not watching at all.

Next was my group presenting on “The Future of Journalism”. Luckily I did much research about it and I thought i handled pretty well during the Q&A. Well, at least I wasn’t speechless or confused when people asked questions.

The last group on Thurs was Andrea’s group, presenting on “The Future of Learning”. They predicted that in the future, there will be more online lessons and assignments. There was a small discussion in class and Nick said that online lessons could shorten the study years. Come to think of it, I kind of disagree. If lessons were to be online, I doubt no one will study. People could just find their classmates who are hardworking and copy their work. Even though SP isn’t totally online yet, there are already students copying others’ works. If everything were to go online, I guess it will only make students get lazier and more anti-social. Perhaps there will be even an increase in number of retainers. Personally, I don’t fancy online lessons. I can’t ask questions immediately when I don’t understand something, and I can’t enjoy the feel of being a student. Being a student is so much fun and everyone is dread of it. I seriously don’t understand why.

On Friday, Elizabeth’s, Shiqi’s and Ned’s groups did presentations. I was especially fascinated by the content of Ned’s presentation about “The Future of Advertising”. I admitted that I’ve never thought of advertising that interactive and fun. Yes, i love advertising and all these future advertising makes my heart burns even more for advertising. It also somewhat let me feel that what I’ve learnt in poly for the first 2 years about advertising a little wasted. Okay, maybe wasted is not the right word because I still got to learn the basics after all. But I think in the future, in 5 years’ time, maybe advertising is not just about Photoshop and drawings and painting. It’s about Flash, videos, social media and technology. Sometimes, i really feel like the world is going too fast for me to catch up.

Shiqi’s group presentation kind of confused me. No, I am not saying it is bad or what just that the ending really makes me wonder what exactly their predictions are. I don’t know is it just my problem or what. After the presentation, I asked Shiqi and she explained to me about it. I understood a little then.

All these presentations about future make me think that the future is really a confusing world. Or either is made up of confusing humans. Perhaps this world should just end in 2012. But I really want to live on to see how the world will be like in the future=)

If you are attending the TEDxBrussels conference on monday 23rd of november you probably are as excited as I am. I’ve heard of several Pré-meetup ideas but nothing concrete yet. Let’s join our excitements together and enjoy a pleasant evening with chats and drinks. Here’s the plan:

TEDxBrussels Pré-Meetup

Sunday 22 november from 21.00 h. (Don’t forget you have to get up early on monday)

at Mappa Mundo

In the trendy Halles St.Géry area the Mappa Mundo café is a popular hang with a cosmopolitan crowd set inside a cozy and warm extravagant decor. The terrace is always packed with people in the summertime. Though it features a good selection of beers the Cocktails menu is quite limited but the excellent Caipirinhas, Strawberry Margaritas and Mojitos which are sold by the glass or liter make up for it.

@Daylah and I will be there, come join us for some interesting chats and a drink. Reply here if you plan on coming, or tweet me, or call me, or text me at (+32)474 90 74 89.

Oh yes, and spread the word. Everybody’s welcome! Even the suckers who can’t make it to TEDxBrussels .

For a little while now, I’ve been chatting to Leif Kendall, Brighton copywriter and organiser of the rather wonderful Brighton writers’ meetup WriteClub, about doing a London version. Well, it’s happening!

We’ll be at The Yorkshire Grey at 7.30 on Tuesday 1 December at 19:30. Here’s a map; address as follows:

46 Langham Street
London

You’ll know Leif by his copy of Don Quixote. To complement the prose – and salute Ezra Pound, who used to live next door – I’ll be sat there with a copy of his epic poetic tome, The Cantos.

Here’s Leif’s post about the evening. It’s going to be a very open, friendly night; so, if you’re any sort of writer, and fancy chatting about fiction, non-fiction, copywriting, screenwriting, in an on-line, off-line or broadcast context (or indeed whatever else takes your fancy) look forward to seeing you there!

We’ll be at The Yorkshire Grey at 7.30 on Tuesday 1 December at 19:30. Here’s a map; address as follows:

46 Langham Street
London
W1W 7AX

You’ll know Leif by his copy of Don Quixote. To complement the prose – and salute Ezra Pound, who used to live next door – I’ll be sat there with a copy of his epic poetic tome, The Cantos.

Here’s Leif’s post about the evening. It’s going to be a very open, friendly night; so, if you’re any sort of writer, and fancy chatting about fiction, non-fiction, copywriting, screenwriting, in an on-line, off-line or broadcast context (or indeed whatever else takes your fancy) look forward to seeing you there!

Going to be handling a good deal of non-bike stuff. And then, going for a ride. I used meetup.com to find a few clubs nearby (but they’re not “clubs” with “dues” … they’re people who like to ride and also happen to live in proximity).

I’ll post back on that if it works out. Or I’ll tell you where I’ve gone if I’ve gone someplace nice.

Also going to stop at the dealer and get some input as to why I don’t have the sound quality I should with the SuperTrapps on my 103″ engine. Hope to get a deal where I can swap pipes rather than mutilate my glasspack supertrapp slipons … not going to hold my breath, though, in dealing with Long Branch Harley Davidson.

Welcome to NYC Tuttle What is it? A chance to meet a range of people with a shared interest i

Welcome to NYC Tuttle

What is it?

A chance to meet a range of people with a shared interest in social media, and the clever things it can do. Better than that, it’s a chance to chat, discuss thoughts and ideas and make new connections, and do it all over a nice glass of something fizzy.

Where is it?

675 Bar

675 Hudson street NYC

New York, NY 10014

(Enter on 13th street between Hudson and 9th Ave

Go down the stairs!)

MAP

After much searching, for the perfect location, close to all forms of transport as well as having a really cool atmasphere AND Wi-Fi, I think this is it! and I think you will feel the same!

When is it?

NYC Tuttle – the Third Thursday every month

6pm untill 8pm (ish!) on Thursday the 19th of November!

Should I come?

Of course! If you have any interest in social media past, present or future, want to connect with new people and share, learn or just muse on things, then you’ll be more than welcome. Creative, strategic, development, and geeky types are more than welcome.

The NYC Tuttle is in early days, but check out the great events taking place regularly in London and LA for an idea of what (we hope!) this will build to.

If you have any questions, want to get involved, or are interested in sponsorship email Daniel

Have any Venue Recommendations for us? please pop over and make some suggestions. Please keep in mind the PATH train runs up 6th ave, and we have some people who would need that to get home to New Jersey.
