Music: Alistair Lock

Director: Gary Russell

Release Date: September 2000

Production Code: 7FA

Running Time: 1 hour 44 minutes

Number of Episodes: 4

Set Between: Delta and The Bannermen and Dragonfire

Cast:

The Doctor (Sylvester McCoy) | Mel (Bonnie Langford)

With: Gemma Bissix (Aglae); Anthony Keetch (Professor Scarlini); Karen Henson (Captain Muriel Frost); Robert Curbishley (Tibernus / Roman Legionary); Andy Coleman (Popidius Celsinus); Nicky Goldie (Valeria Hedone); Steven Wickham (Murranus); Lisa Hollander (Eumachia); Toby Longworth (Priest)

Plot Synopsis:

The TARDIS lands in Pompei on the day of the eruption that wiped out the city. But when his ship is buried under a collapsed building, the Doctor remembers that it was excavated in the ruins of Pompei in the year 1980.

Can he and Mel avoid the political machinations of the ambitious Eumachia, or the attention of a vengeful gladiator who believes that they have stolen his money?

The Doctor knows that he has very few hours to avoid being trapped in this time and place forever, or perhaps worse…

Continuity/Tie In:

Although this story is set in the same time and place as the Tenth Doctor story The Fires of Pompeii, there is nothing to say that these stories could not both have taken place, with the Doctors just missing each other!

This is the second story in the Big Finish range that is totally historical (the first was The Marian Conspiracy).

This is the first appearance of Bonnie Langford as Mel in the Big Finish range and the actress herself chose the image used on the cover.

Captain Muriel Frost was a UNIT character who originated in the Doctor Who Magazine comic strip.

Listen Again?

Andrew: When I first listened to the story back in 2000, I remember really liking it. There was something about the forthcoming cataclysm that seemed very real – a sombreness that was never quite captured in the Tenth Doctor tale The Fires of Pompeii. I had not listened to it since, but because I had built it up in my head as a bit of a high point in the early Big Finish stories but I came away from it this time slightly disappointed.

There are some great points. Bonnie Langford never really won me over on the television as Mel but, in fairness to her, I now think that this was because she wasn’t given all that much to do apart from scream, so this is quite a departure. You could even argue that this story gives Mel more to do than the Doctor – whilst he is sitting there moping, having given up on finding the TARDIS, Mel spends the whole time trying to find it, or at the very least trying to work out where it might be or who might know about it.

Bonnie is pretty much the lead in this, and she attacks the part with obvious relish, and is a joy to listen to as a result. I never really believed Mel’s departure on TV (she left to travel with mercenary Sabalom Glitz) because the character never seemed to have much of a backbone. Had we seen the side of Mel that we see here on the television, it would have made her exit seem much more plausible. However this is utterly her story and wonderful for it. The scenes where she runs into a building to hide from someone who is following her and then finds out that the establishment is a brothel are hilarious, the incredulity in her performance makes the scene.

The problem I have with this story is the Doctor’s behaviour. He knows that the TARDIS was uncovered in the ruins of Pompei in 1980, so when they arrive, I just don’t think he would have hung about. Initially, the TARDIS doesn’t tell him where they are, so leaving the ship for a look around is quite reasonable – but as soon as he finds out where, and more importantly when they are, he should have bustled them back inside and got the Hell out. Later, when the TARDIS is buried in an earthquake, and their fate seems sealed, he literally just gives up. He sits in a pub moping like an idiot whilst Mel is being proactive and trying to sort things out. This is not the Doctor. He did not know for certain that this visit was the one that trapped him there, he just assumed and for him to just lie back and let things happen does not work for me at all.

I also have another minor issue with the actual characterisation of the Doctor. This is the character we got to see in McCoy’s last couple of series, and since this story is set during his first season, it feels odd to see the brooding Doctor of the later episodes. But then perhaps this whole situation was a wake up call for him – perhaps even the events of this tale shaped the Doctor that he became.

For a story set in a large city, the cast is quite contained and to a degree this works to the detriment of the tale, because it never feels quite like the civilisation that it ought to. Admittedly the cast that are there are all that are needed to tell the tale, but it would have felt larger if there had been some additional characters. Naturally, the final episode features the eruption of Vesuvius, and in terms of audio production it is done really well. The explosions and pandemonium are brilliantly put together, and finally the place seems like a living, populated city. There is one moment that is actually quite funny in hindsight – the part where the Doctor denies Valeria that the eruption is anything to do with him. Ah, the irony!

As for the story itself, it is great. The guest actors all excel, and it is a refreshing change to have another purely historical tale. It would be interesting to know how much this tale influenced the TV episode, but then when you look at them in more detail, there are not many similarites: apart from the setting, the stories are very different. So, yes I would listen to it again, especially for Bonnie Langford who, over the course of the Big Finish plays she has done, has made me totally re-evaluate Mel, and this is where it started. 3/5

Mike: The best of the Big Finish McCoy’s so far. My initial reservations about having a story with Mel in it were happily blown to smithereens by having some decent characterisation for her. Yes, she was still irritating at times, especially when she and the Doctor are invited to dinner and she can’t take the Doctor’s hints to shut up but I suppose you could explain it by suggesting this takes place before Delta and the Bannermen since being in Earth’s past seems new to her here.

I take Andrew’s point about the Doctor being out of character but it didn’t really bother me that much since he snaps out of it halfway through and I just looked at it, as Andrew says, that this sows the seeds of his later attitude of knowing things in advance and manipulating events. All in all, a good story well told. 3.5/5

Paul: Much like Andrew, I was slightly disappointed by this story second time around. Perhaps it’s because BF have done much stronger stories in the meantime that this one seems less impressive than it did all those years ago.

Nevertheless, it’s an excellent showcase for Bonnie/Mel and much like their reinvention of the Sixth Doctor, this marks BF’s second success in rehabilitating a badly treated character.

Hourglass Cosmetics

Hourglass Cosmetics

– www.houglasscosmetics.com

W3LL People

Já a linha da W3LL é toda “natureba”. Não contém sulfato de sódio e além disso a embalagem é toda feita com material reciclado.

I’ll be getting my copy sometime today.

Check back later for more details!

UPDATE

I was at Barnes and Noble when it opened its doors at 9am. The sales clerks in the DVD section had no idea what I was talking about but eventually located a copy with a retail price of $59.99.

Unlike the covers for the previous few seasons, this one doesn’t feature a cast shot but rather individual pictures of the characters. Staring out from the center is Hilary Swank (Carly). I’ve been complaining about this ever since the art was first released as Swank was only in 16 episodes. Sure, she was billed as a lead character (and hired to be in the whole season) but with limited cover space, that spot should’ve gone to Vincent Young (Noah), who was not only in every episode of the season but also seasons 9 and 10. I’ve been told the decision to put Swank front and center was a marketing decision designed to capitalized on the Oscar winner’s recognition factor. Apparently that applies to the individual disc covers as well as Swank is also featured prominently on one of those while this time the MIA actor is Brian Austin Green (David), who’s been with the series since Day 1.

The back cover also doesn’t feature Young but manages to include him and everyone else in the description (though in a different order than the opening credits): “The Real World: 90210…School is over and the friends of Beverly Hills 90210 are discovering that life after graduation is not as easy as they thought! Come along with Brandon (Jason Priestley), Kelly (Jennie Garth), Donna (Tori Spelling), David (Brian Austin Green), Steve (Ian Ziering), Val (Tiffani Amber Thiessen), Noah (Vincent Young), and Carly (Hilary Swank) as they explore love and life outside of college in all 30 titillating episodes of Season 8. Experience Kelly’s recovery from a drive-by shooting, Brandon and Kelly’s wedding plans, and Donna’s drug overdose. It doesn’t take long for the gang to discover that the real world can be just as unpredictable as college.”

The set contains 7 discs with descriptions on the back of the individual cases. It’s pretty much a given there’s going to be errors (or, at the very list, vague summaries that miss the key points) but there are some doozies here! (1) “Racial lyrics lead David’s band, After Dark, into problems.” First off, the band wasn’t David’s–he was pseudo-managing them. But more importantly, After Dark is the name of the club that’s been on the show since season 5, not the name of the band (which was actually called Cain Was Able). (2) Continuing with the band name errors, they say “a member of Jasper’s Legend tries to sue Noah after a car accident” but the band was called Jasper’s Law. (3) We’ve got a serious reversal of events when they say “Valerie accuses Noah of date rape when she wakes up without any memory of the night before…and Donna and David get into a car accident.” Considering Donna and David’s interaction is partly the catalyst for Valerie and Noah even sleeping together, the order is crucial. (4) And the biggest error comes in the description for the two-part series finale: “Kelly takes an AIDS test after she comes into contact with the blood of an HIV patient. Trying to calm their new female news achor, Brandon ends up getting her drunk. Mel issues David an ultimatium. Valerie anxiously awaits her HIV test results. Brandon and Kelly have some very big news for their invited guests a few hours before the wedding.” The first half of that (from “Kelly…” to “…ultimatium” is from an episode in season 7! That’s right, folks. How a description for an episode that wasn’t even in this season–and wasn’t even a season finale, for that matter–ended up merged with the description for the actual season finale is beyond me. And, just to be totally accurate, Brandon and Kelly had their “surprise” *at* the wedding, not hours before.

Also worth mentioning is the pamphlet advertising other shows on DVD, including 90210: The First Season. The description reads: “New Drama. Same Zip. There’s a new generation in town, and they’re turning up the heat at West Beverly High. For hook-ups, break-ups, drug busts, and betrayals, 90210 is the place to go for the ultimate in guilty pleasures! Packed with Special Features.”

Unfortunately, this set isn’t “packed with special features.” Just as it was with season 7, my biggest complaint is the absence of special features altogether. I can only hope they are making some kick-ass ones for a complete series release. (And if there’s no complete series release, I’ll be hella pissed.)

Season 9 comes out in February.

Stay tuned!

Author of What a Husband Needs from His Wife and What a Wife Needs from Her Husband (Harvest House)

An Unexpected Entry into Ministry

I started writing just because I love to write, and I think that is in and of itself a great reason to write. My writing focused on lessons God was teaching me, specifically at that time about marriage. I would get up early in the morning, sometimes at 4 or 5 a.m, because that’s my most productive time, and I began putting on paper and computer lessons God was impressing on my heart.

Gradually, I began to wonder if what I was writing could help other women, so I began to submit to some publications and had a few magazine articles published. Then an amazing thing happened. The president of Harvest House publishers read one of those articles, “Becoming Your Husband’s Helper” and CALLED ME AND ASKED ME IF I’D BE INTERESTED IN WRITING A BOOK. I put that in capital letters because even now, it’s amazing how God worked that out! I love to tell this story to encourage others who have the dream of writing.

When they called, I tried to act calm and professional, as if publishers called me every day, but then I quickly abandoned that facade to be completely honest because I was concerned about something. While Scott and I had come a long way in our marriage, we still had some major struggles. I wasn’t so sure I was the one to be writing a marriage book. Harvest House assured me that my honesty was one of the qualities that attracted them to my writing about marriage. That book proposal, What a Wife needs from Her Husband, was accepted and in 2006 I had my first book published.

I’ve learned that ministry is most effective when I am sharing with others what God is working out in my own life. For example, I write and speak about marriage because that’s a major area in my life where I’ve seen the Holy Spirit transform me. That doesn’t mean that “I’ve arrived” or become perfect in that area. Not at all. In fact being real and authentic is one of my top priorities as a communicator. I never want people to think that I have it all together – because I don’t! I do, however, want them to see that God truly does transform us when we let Him be the Lord of our lives.

Writing about Marriage

In my first book, What a Husband Needs from His Wife, I share many stories about my marriage and other couples’ marriages. I also provide Scripture and many practical ideas for wives to apply to their marriages.

I address a problem that was long-standing in my marriage and one I see in many other marriages. That problem was, in a word, me. More specifically, my focus was off. I spent a lot of time telling God and my husband what they could do to improve our marriage. Finally, when God got a hold of me and I began to surrender my marriage to Him, I began to ask the question every wife needs to ask: God, what kind of wife do You want me to be?

I think this first book has been successful and appealing to women because it’s real, as I’ve already said is very important to me, and it asks women to get to the heart of the matter. We can change our behavior, but if we don’t allow God to change our hearts, the changes won’t stand the test of time.

I take the same approach with men in my second book, What a Wife Needs from Her Husband, and the focus of the chapters parallel the chapters in the husband book, so by using the study guides at the end of the book, husbands and wives can easily study these books together.

For now, this is a script I’ve developed a few years ago. It’s a tool to duplicate a nurbs object along a curve while rotating it. There is also the option of lofting the duplicates.
I’m stuck in the house with no internet and but I am still broadcasting live on wordpress via

I’m stuck in the house with no internet and but I am still broadcasting live on wordpress via my blackberry tour which is probably gonna be at the end of this post cuz it somehow manages to attach its tag to anything I write lol but I am writing this just to let my readers know what they can expect from me. By the way that was the first period I used lol and the proper punctuation is another thing that can be accredited to my blackberry but anyway I am gonna use another period to start my explanation for my wordpress. I have a lot of interests and currently I’m a college student studying film but I am interested in a lot of things such as Movies of course (all genres horror is my favorite) photography, journalism, photojournalism, various forms of art from sculptures and paintings, urban culture, HIP HOP culture (its not in all caps to make that seem more important than any of my other interests) well I should say real hip hop ie Jay Electronica R&B too that Maxwell is the truth and women can’t forget them at all : ) so with all of those interests I stay busy and so that’s why I procrastinated making a wordpress, blog, tumblr etc. but I just decided to do this to keep me busy (like I need anything else on my plate) but I know that idle time when on a mission is the biggest enemy and I am on a mission to find happiness not riches or superficial anyone’s approval (accept the fam) cuz I feel like life is too short to not be happy right? Well that’s a no brainer for me at least and I’m not trying to turn this into a myspace “about me” section tho so besides that juss keep up with me cuz I’m movin right now its November 13 2009 3:00 a.m. and I’m still not done with November 12 day yet but If this isn’t updated then my twitter will be cuz I update that regularly like I said this is my first time on wordpress plus I’m doing this from my blackberry lol I’m not even sure if I’m doin it right lol I’m juss trying to get this out there but I’m gonna be adding a new album to my art site if you haven’t seen it yet go to my twitter. Twitter.com/follow_mel and its listed as my website check it out and let me know what you think I also edit videos and will be making a new edit for After Effects to demonstrate my knowledge with that program but that will be either later this week or next but just stay tuned we will see where this goes but juss Follow Mel ; ) Next stop happiness

-Follow Mel (that’s gonna be my closing phrase they might change like I said we will see)
