29 November 2009
http://www.melakafestival.com

“If the government won’t give me money,” I recently read an artist comment, “I just make poor theatre.” Another alternative: get money from other governments! That is what the Melaka Art & Performance Festival did recently, hitting up Multicultural Arts Victoria and the Australia Council to finance the visits of 21 artists to present a series of site-specific performances and art installations in the old part of Melaka around the remains of A Famosa, St Paul’s Church and the river.

Led by Melaka-born and Melbourne-based dancer Tony Yap, the festival featured his long-time collaborator Janette Hoe (also Malaysian-born and Melbourne-based) as well as a number of other Australians, and some people from Ireland, Indonesia, Chile, New Zealand, Vietnam and Canada. Malaysia was also represented by Kim Ng and Goh Lee Kwang, but I heard some griping that Malaysian-based artists were conspicuously absent at the festival. Then again, if Tony wants to bring all his friends home to Melaka to play, and the Australian government foots the bill, then who are we to complain? We would not otherwise have had the privilege to see the works of these artists — their appearance in Melaka should have been refreshing for the closeted Malaysian arts scene.

I say ‘should have been’, because it wasn’t, mostly because nobody knew the festival was happening. I only found out about it because I ran into Janette Hoe at a performance in KL. A week before, a notice about MAP circulated on Facebook, but it was still surrounded by silence and mystery. Even the cultural attache at the Australian High Commission only heard of it after it was over! Thanks to this promotional vacuum, the usual culture vultures did not come in for the kill – at least they didn’t on the afternoon that I was there. But fortunately the festival did not lack an audience. By coinciding with the Hari Raya Haji long weekend and with school holidays, Melaka was full of day trippers and balik kampung kids, ready to ogle at a masked woman cavorting on a hillside or a man in Javanese gear balancing on an electricity box, in between scarfing down their cendol and chicken rice balls and being toted up and down the strip on trishaws.

The art-starved masses make a curious audience. Their criteria are pragmatic rather than aesthetic. “How can she do that in the hot sun?” was an oft-heard comment. Performances had to be loud or gimmicky to get their attention. Geraldine Morey, wafting up the hillside surrounded by swarms of dragonflies, and fluttering her fingers as if conducting her insectile orchestra, was a worthy object of curiosity: white woman, long blond hair bound in ribbons, with Butoh-born self-possession, firmly observing the fourth wall. But what on earth was she doing? The audience could only gape and guess.

Mike Hornblow’s odd symbiotic performance with a pair of plastic chairs was another crowd-interesting novelty. With a display of great effort, he hoisted himself and his chairs down a reconstructed wall of laterite stone. At the bottom, he proceeded to launch himself off the ground, still connected to the chairs, and land with a crash, which unsurprisingly ended with one of the chairs breaking. I sensed some disapproval from the crowd – art is not an excuse for wanton destruction! Crazy white man.

I think Daniel Mounsey’s piece in the shade of the A Famosa ruins was the most effective. Entitled ‘Pakeha’, it explored Daniel’s ancestry of white-man imperialists. With painted-out teeth and a false moustache, looking every inch the sideshow pirate, Daniel staggered around the fort entrance, beating his chest and spitting, “Melaka! Mine! Melaka! Mine!” When a clutch of unsuspecting children emerged from the archway, he attacked them with growls and roars. The children screamed and fled, and the audience cheered appreciatively. Eventually, with many suspicious glances behind him, and with wailing entreaties to “Mama! Jesus!”, the white male imperialist lay down in the shadow of the fort and died of tropical fever, which was a great comfort to all the Malaysians watching. The children sneaked up to see if he was really dead. Everyone clapped. Here was something that they understood, and moreover something that derived real meaning from the site Daniel had chosen. Literal, maybe; over the top, certainly; but an effective use of space and audience.

Another difficulty with the site-specific performances was the noise. The festival organisers could do nothing about it and the artists must have anticipated the problem, but while watching their performances I found the noise distracting and instrusive. The trishaws drivers were pumping mid-90s dance music, and would honk repeatedly to show their appreciation for Medea Luminea in her guise as a 17th century high class whore who was tossing her scarf on the hillside – the desired response, perhaps? Another event taking place on the roadway near A Famosa blasted ‘Buttons’, which made an ugly contrast to Jeanette Hoe’s quiet and thoughtful solo. Car alarms went off, children blew little bird whistles bought from hawkers, and loudspeakers called parents to collect lost toddlers. The only work that came off more or less unscathed from this aural attack was Agung Gunawan’s solo. His soundscape sounded like a tame mynah bird chattering through its repertoire — “Assalamualaikum! Hello bird!” — which synched well with the surrounding noise pollution.

Up on the hill in the shade of St Paul’s Church, things were blessedly quieter. In a simple and pretty participative project, the public were invited to write their secrets, wishes and fears on coconut leaves that were strung around a large tree. Inside the church, projected videos played above installation art works. As dusk swooped down over the city, here we found the most affecting and unashamedly beautiful work at the festival: Matthew Gingold’s audiovisual installation ‘Flying Falling Floating’. Projected onto the domed chancel wall of the church, it shows dancers drifting across blackness in the motions of the work’s title. A line of bodies flies serenely earthwards, not plummeting, but driving itself with gentle wing beats straight towards the ground. In slow motion, groups of bodies tumble into view and tumble out again, like angels yoked to a giant rolling millstone of darkness. Layered bodies, larger than life, hang in the centre of the space like a great crucifixion of light. As daylight fades, the sky turns the same colour as the projected background, and in the ruined structure of St Paul’s which lacks a roof over its nave, it seems as if the chancel wall too has crumbled, to reveal the figures wheeling like constellations in the night sky.

The festival closed against this backdrop with ‘Eulogy for the Living’, in which all the performers converge in St Paul’s in their day’s characters. There is Our Lady of the Dragonflies again, and Michael Hornblow with his prosthetic chairs (a new one to replace the broken one), and Agung Gunawan in his Javanese headdress. Each performs an excerpt from their solo works, to their original soundscapes, before sinking to the stone floor in the semblance of death. In stumbles the Pakeha, still mouthing off, but he too soon falls into despondency, leaning against the gravestones of his ancestors. When corset-clad Medea Luminea enters, the Pakeha rouses slightly, gazing at her with a mixture of longing and hope, as if she is the key that can release him from the cycle of piracy and barbary. It is a rare moment of real human connection in this stylized and somewhat sterile Butoh landscape. But eventually all the characters descend into death, leaving only Tony Yap to play the penitent. He attends with solicitousness to each pilgrim body as it falls, before laying himself gently to the ground. There is silence. Then finally they all stand up to bow.

‘Eulogy for the Living’ was a nice ending, bringing together all the elements of this little weekend festival, recapping its diversity and paying individual tribute to its participants. Afterwards King Marong from Gambia and Lamin Sonko from Senegal set up with their African drumming, and got the artists, audience and organisers on their feet. Certainly they deserved a little celebration! As a mini international arts festival, assembled by a small group of dedicated people with no fanfare and minimal local government support, the Melaka Art & Performance Festival was a success. There were many people who went home from Melaka that day with colourful photographs and stories to tell of strange goings-on around the ruins, and a few people who went home knowing that they had experienced moments of meaning, tantalizing glimpses of possibilities and inspiring models for art-making which will mark our memories of Melaka for ever after.

Last weekend I took a drive alone to Melaka for SGNDT’09. It was going to be a long weekend of 5d4n alone and I was going to take this time to gain back my confidence and forget about Kay. First few days was fine and fun. I did see SYong, an old crush I had ages ago.. and I do still think him cute. He looks very much like one of those Taiwanese pretty boy with longish layered hair and large liquid eyes. Tall too, although a little thin but I like my guys lanky anyway. He was there during the opening and I only exchanged a few words with him, since all I do is look from afar anyway. He has a girl and he is the shy, quiet type anyway. He left that day itself so I had lesser eye candy. Haha.

During the next two days, I went around Melaka and hung out with other friends; new and old. I thought about Kay a lot though. I decided that he wasn’t good for me and although I miss him a lot, I think it was about time for me to stop moping and move on. I wanted to be at least friends with him as I don’t really like being ignored, especially for no reason at all. So I actually hung out, flirted with everyone – basically just building the confidence I lost since I met Kay. I didn’t want to do anything, or even bothered having a tryst with anyone just for the sake of a fling. Well, until things happened on the final night.

Well, on the last night after the closing of the event, SYong was there. He was also going to be staying overnight. At first, I didn’t bother much, was just thinking that I have some nice eye candy to feast on. But I noticed the entire day, he kept glancing at me. I thought maybe I was just being too conscious, but a few times I actually caught his eye and I looked away since I was embarrassed. The whole ENTIRE day it was like this. After the closing, we all went to dinner with the boss and all the organising staff and he was sitting at the next table. He was still glancing at me ever so often. Fine. I didn’t bother. Then we all went for beer after that. And the entire time he was opposite me, he did the same.

After being quite nice and high, we all went back to the apartment that most of the guys were staying at. SYong’s friends kept teasing about him and I (this has been going on since the beginning of time.. more like since I mentioned I thought him cute) and since everyone was playing, I played along too. I said “If you give me the bed next to SYong, I will stay here. It doesn’t bother me.” They actually locked us in! But nothing happened either.

After an hour, while I was waiting for TT to take me to my room since I have no idea where it was, I hung out on SYong’s bed while Sam was in the other bed. We were teasing Sam a bit then suddenly there was silence. We all just kept quiet and didn’t know what to say. Sam went to sleep. So I was just sitting there thinking of what to say when SYong reached out and stroked my face. I cannot express how shocked I was. SYong has always been the unattainable, the eye-candy, the one I never really thought will happen. Well, all reason left my head and all I did was kiss his hand. For everyone’s information, we didn’t do the deed. lol. He put his hand in my shirt and everywhere else but he #1: didn’t want to kiss my lips.. #2: felt guilty since he has a gf who treats him well. I had to keep taking his hand away. But although he said that, he kept touching me and stroking my face. Every now and then he sits up and talks to me. So I think this is the first time he has so called “cheated”.

Frankly, it was annoying. If he wanted something, don’t feel guilty halfway. I did go down on him though.. and I know he wanted me to finish the job but I didn’t. Since I wasn’t going to get any, he doesn’t deserve to either. I guess I was evil in a sense. He did mention I was good at it though. What a nice thing to say. Confidence boost +10! He also said I was very attractive. Additional confidence boost +5! Too bad we didn’t do anything.

I kind of left in a huff though. I hate it because he kept saying he felt guilty sleeping next to me. I wasn’t even doing anything! And after all the places he was touching, he was guilty sleeping next to me. lol.

But now that I’m back in KL, I realised I was just too drunk and tired out. And it was flattering to have a guy I was crushing on actually paying attention to me like that. I actually was attractive enough to seduce him without even doing anything. That gave me the confidence that I lost when I was mindfucked by Kay. If there is ever a chance to see SYong again, I won’t make a move unless he does first. He is cute anyway. Haha.

picture by spooneater Eight Jalan Tukang Emas might easily be overlooked by passer-bys and tourists

Eight Jalan Tukang Emas might easily be overlooked by passer-bys and tourists visiting Chinatown in Melaka. The one attraction why people come here is for the food. Old Melaka is a food haven. Chicken rice balls: Rice spheres which are a variation of the famous Hainanese dish, and the local take on the ever-popular curry noodle dish: Laksa. As such, most of the traditional shophouses in the Chinatown area have in some way or another profited from the throngs of visitors who want a taste of Melaka’s culinary delights. The antique stores that stock junk from the town’s colonial past, Chinese temples, and budget hostels, all share the same architecture as 8 Jalan Tukang Emas.

Eight Jalan Tukang Emas looks just like yet another shophouse along this street, apart from its periwinkle blue painted shutters. Its fame and recognition amongst budget travelers as one of the best hostels in Melaka should remain visually obscured by every other shophouse in Chinatown is indeed a curiosity. For fame and success amongst these little businesses in Chinatown seems to always have to do with spectacular neon lighted displays, ridiculously long queues that somehow signify shop popularity, and painstakingly restored multicolor Peranakan decor.

As it happens, I spent two days and a night at 8 Jalan Tukang Emas, better known as the “Jalan Jalan” guesthouse. I seemed to have spent more time enjoying its home-away-from home comforts, rather than exploring the streets of Melaka’s old quarter. I am fascinated by its tranquil inner garden courtyard, and the rows of bicycles lined up in front of its front shutters, ready for rent at RM 6 per day…

The hostel was rather relaxing. It took me a long time to remove myself from the feeling of being at home, and on the most basic level, I never have, and never will. There is no homely hostel like one that is a home, no garden like a garden an inner garden that entices you with the sound of trickling water that seemed to bring a hot day down to a cool one. I have never experienced any hostel atmosphere as welcoming, that will always be facilitated by its hostel-keeper Sam.

What are some of the resources I used to find this home away from home?

If buying a copy of Lonely Planet for a weekend shoestring budget getaway makes no sense for you, there are plenty of resources online.

http://www.tripadvisor.com

Trip advisor is possibly the most user-friendly travel resource search engine available, and that’s how many fellow travelers in Melaka found Jalan Jalan.

http://www.hostelworld.com/

Hostelworld gives annual awards to the best hostels around the world, and have been visited by its staff that does personal reviews of the places. Jalan Jalan has won awards for “best staff” and “best cleanliness”.

http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree

If you’ve got questions about a destination, chances are someone might have already asked, and gotten answers about it on Lonely Planet’s Thorn Tree forum. Great for checking out transport options, and potential scams in specific locations too.

http://delicious.com/

Crowdsourcing at its best. The most popular social-bookmarking site can give you the best options for cheap and popular lodgings. See what others have favored in the cities you wish to visit.

http://www.couchsurfing.org/

Apart from surfing on other’s couches, CSers can provide good information about the best hostels in their area. Sign up and ask around!

A combination of the results from the websites above should give you some of the best hostels available in a city. Do you have any other resources to recommend?

Where does “here” points to??? the answer is MELAKA!!! wuuhooo!!!! its a real impromptu trip. So for now i’m sitting in front of my pc right in the starbuck’s of dataran pahlaman=)

It started like this. Saturday morning, draged myself out of bed an hour later than i should and head over to campus to attend a seminar with mona who came down from melaka. The whole thing was utter boring(not to mention we were freezing to death in that crazy huge as cinema-ish hall)!! but i had fun just cathing up with mona. Then, mona just came up with this brilliant idea for me to follow them down to melaka! was kind of unsure at first, cos i have no idea how am i suppose to come back?! but it was tempting,so so so so so tempting! by now,its clear that i’ve gave in and just came along anyway, lol. The BF who is the sweetest will send me back tomoro. so all is settled like within 10 15 mins? thats how i ended up here!

On the way back,i “tumpang” the bus from melaka back to melaka.. hehehe. it has been YEARS since i went on a school bus trip! had a damn great time, chattering and making so much noise on the bus with new and old friends. Learn a trick of two on business from khamis who forgot i was a freshie under him,but somehow in a weird way he remember he saw me when i wore my contact lense for the first time=.=

i think i’ll end my post here first or else i wont be able to to what i’m suppose to do here(starbucks). STUDY time! tatas!

will somehow continue talking more about melaka soon!

When my friends broached the topic of a day trip to Malacca during one weekend, I was thrilled! Malacca… the name itself conjured images of history in my head. I think it must be those fuzzy lines in my history books during my grade school days that spurred all the excitement. I do have a faint recollection of encountering the name of the place among the passages describing the spice route, the spice trade, Moluccas and Magellan’s erstwhile “discovery” of the Philippines. Of course, any place that’s in my dusty old history book is by default on my list. Geekiness prevailed, and naturally, I was thrilled to pay Malacca a visit.

Malacca is this charming port town in the southwestern coast of Malaysia, which is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site. I was looking for history and culture, and I was not disappointed. Everywhere are visual representations of a unique blend of history and cultural influences- Malay, Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch. Evidence abound from the elegant Nyonya kebayas being displayed in shops, to the food, to the churches and temples, to the architecture, to the old ruins. Old forts, crumbling walls, pink buildings, a Dutch graveyard, and an old stone church that once held St. Francis Xavier’s remains- all these whisper of a “once upon a time” and tell tales of a rich and colorful past.

Christ Church

And then, of course, there was the focal point: food. One thing very interesting about Malacca is its cusine. The intermarriage between Malays and Chinese resulted in what is known as the Baba-Nyonya cuisine- that unique fusion of flavors held together by love which, because of the spices, left me with a warm fuzzy feeling that radiated from my innards to my limbs like the warm sunshine. Forget about the fusion cooking in restaurants. Malaccans have been perfecting fusion cuisine long before it became all the rage in commercial dining. We had several dishes like assam pork, which was marinated pork with tamarind sauce; otak-otak, which was ground fish paste wrapped in banana leaves and then steamed; steamed whole fish; pork spare ribs, among others. I could only describe the food as… happy, with love on the menu. It seemed to me the kind that your grandma would cook in her kitchen. Filled to capacity, we did not even get to sample classic Malacca treats like chicken rice ball, Portuguese egg tarts, Devil’s curry and the famed pineapple tarts. We did try, though, the famous ABC- Ais Baba Chendol, which was a dessert made with your choice of sweet preserves and sago, topped with shaved ice and drizzled with coconut milk and sugar syrup made of Gula Melaka. Having been fed, I meandered, soaking up the culture and the sun, a sated and happy traveler.

Steamed fish, otak-otak, asam pork (pork in tamarind sauce), cuttlefish.

My friends and I skipped about town- from one shophouse to another, to temples where we could hear monks chanting, to an art gallery where we chatted with the artist himself, to a rotating observation tower that went up and down several stories high. And I ate my way through Malacca. And I hammed it up for the camera, three snapshots for every bite taken.

I would not mind going there for a second time. And staying a bit longer.

Buku-buku Pts

Buku-buku bahasa Melayu khususnya buku Pts sangat banyak disini.
