So i just bought Project One, which is an album by the two DJs, Headhunterz and Wildstylez. But not after listening to tons of different hardstyle/jumpstyle songs. I have to say, Headhunterz is my favorite DJ :]

For those of you that don’t know what hardstyle is, it’s a form of techo/dance/electronica music. It’s also a form of dance that consists of shuffling such as the running man and melbourne shuffle.

Jumpstyle music is relatively the same as hardstyle music, but the dance is different. Jumpstyle, or hardjump, dancing involves- you guessed it- jumping! to the beat of the music.

Most people dance hardstyle and jumpstyle at raves, and hardstyle dancers sometimes wear phat pants. Phat pants have a fitted waist and the pants get wider down to the floor so that they hide the foot. Most pants are decorated with neon fabric and paint so that they glow under UV light at raves.

Eyes open wide; she dances & moves, she’s feeling that scene & everybody knows it.
For 9 hours she moved on those dance floors like she owned them & when it was all over at 7am, she wasn’t ready to go.

I’m a Sydney boy but I have to say that every time I visit Melbourne I see new and interesting reference points for youth culture. The Melbourne Shuffle is a style of street dancing been around since the 80s in underground subcultures, but has picked up in the past 2-3 years. This youtube click has almost 8million views, pretty cool for a style of dance that 90% of Aussies have never heard of. Co-incidentally a digital strategist Mark Pollard twittered about seeing ’shufflers’ in Sydney and I ended up seeing the same crew on Sunday afternoon down near Darling Harbour. I’m surprised no streetwear brand has aligned itself with the ’shuffle’ dance style, could be a good opportunity for real youth traction.

It’s time for some dance floor action with these dance moves that’ll sweep the tecktonikers of the floor: the Melbourne Shuffle and the Kuduro.

Despite common thought, the Melbourne shuffle isn’t a new variation that results from jump style or tecktonik. It had been invented in the underground scene of indeed Merlbourne somewhere in the late 80s. It certaintly is more interesting to watch than jump style: it involves more sliding movements and it can be danced on various genres of electronic music.

The late 80s seemed to be very inspiring for kids with itchy legs. Kuduro, to name just one of those other dance styles that have sprung up. It’s a bubbly dance from Angola that via the suburbs of Lisbon found its way to Europe. It incorporates the foot movements that can be seen in The Melbourne Shuffle and the 90s jump styles, but the more R’nB/Hip-hop inspired freestyle dancing gives it its fluency.

I know I’ve been neglecting the ol’ blog lately, but I have a couple of good excuses:

1.  I haven’t been reading much for the past week because I’ve started taking Celecoxib for knee osteoarthritis and it has been causing blurry vision (even with my reading glasses) which means that I’ve only been able to read a page or two at a time.  The blurriness is slowly going away, but it’s a real pain.

2.  Speaking of pain, I slipped and injured my foot while walking last week. I think one of the little bones on the top is broken, but it’s feeling better now too.  It seems like I’m getting nowhere during my walks, anyway. I think I need to quit doing the activity shown in the following video and walk like a normal person again.  It’s too bad, because this greatly impresses the young men I meet along the way!

You do realize that I could never do this in a million years, don’t you?  When my knees and my foot feel better maybe I’ll try it.  I’ll do it front of my older daughter so she can ROFL to the extreme!

I witnessed some lack luster dancing last night. But it was so bad it was good. It started me thinking about the Melbourne shuffle. Being too old for the rave scene (self-imposed). I have never tried the shuffle. But there are plenty of you tube videos of how to do it. After my attempt to teach myself to moon-walk I may add the shuffle to my repertoire of moves to bust out.

Enjoy the gloomy, autumnal day in Melbourne we are blessed by rain today ). If anyone knows of a good funk band that plays in Melbourne -  I am looking for somewhere with a live band to go and get my groove on with a friend. Any suggestions welcome.
