For the most part, I’m thankful for surviving. I made pretty difficult decisions in the past several months, and while I’ve had to suffer socially and financially for these changes, it could have been worse.

I am thankful for very new experiences. This has been a “Yes I can!” year for me – I’ve taken on bigger responsibilities that I would’ve shunned last year.

I am very, very thankful for new friends that made my world a bigger, brighter place.

Now, I hope to get a moleskin planner to say thanks for.

For those who haven’t been following the news – Maguindanao Death Toll Climbs to 57. There is never an excuse for violence. Never. Those war lords must be brought down and justice must be served.

Also, while reading this headline, I recalled a quote from the TV movie, Nuremburg, “Lack of conviction is the root of all evil.”

This entry from PCIJ best sums up my sentiments on the entire issue.

Mitten im ohnehin grauen November ist es passiert. Unser Kater Tiger ist ganz in der Nähe unseres Hauses Anfang der Woche gestorben. Seit Montagnachmittag war er nicht mehr auffindbar, obwohl er als Freigänger ansonsten mindestens einmal täglich zum heftigen Schmusen und Futter fassen vorbei kam. Auch bei den Nachbarn, bei denen er gern gesehener Gast war, vermisste man ihn. Wir liefen auf allen Wegen und Feldern in der Nähe herum und riefen vergeblich seinen Namen.

Bis gestern Abend ein netter Nachbar Tiger vorbeibrachte, der sich zum Sterben in den Lichtschacht des Nachbarhauses gelegt hatte. So hatten wir uns das Wiedersehen nicht gewünscht. Anscheinend war Tiger angefahren worden und hatte sich zum Sterben zurück gezogen. Uns blieb nur noch ihn zu verabschieden und ihm unter der Birke im Garten ein Grab zu schaufeln, das wir mit Herbstlaub bedeckten.

Wir sind alle unheimlich traurig, da unser Tiger wirklich ein sehr liebes Exemplar der Gattung Katze war. Er hatte – wie alle Katzen – seinen eigenen Kopf und kam und ging wie es ihm beliebte. Wenn er allerdings da war und sein Fressen bekam, war er nur noch lieb und anhänglich. Obwohl er auch häufig über längere Zeiten allein zu Hause war, hat er nie irgendetwas angerührt oder zerstört. Er schien mit unserer Nähe zufrieden und wir mit seiner. Dabei hat er uns mit seinem Schnurren und seinem weichen Fell immer gute Stimmung gebracht.

Drei Jahre hat er mit uns in Rostock zusammengelebt, wo wir bereits seine Schwester Kitty, die von einem Spaziergang nie mehr wieder kam, vermissten. Den Umzug von der Ostsee an den Rhein hat Tiger bestens verkraftet und sich anscheinend sehr wohl in unserem neuen größeren Domizil mit Umgriff gefühlt. Nur die Straße vor dem Haus, auf der die vorbeifahrenden Wagen leider meistens nicht die vorgeschriebenen 30 km/h fahren, war von Anfang an gefährlich und ist ihm wohl zum Verhängnis geworden.

Wir vermissen unseren lieben Tiger und werden ihn ganz bestimmt nicht so schnell vergessen.

So yeah, I was a’talking with a friend the other day,

About writing a journal.

And how much of a precious gift that could one day be for her children, or her children’s children.

Ok, so, think of it! =)

Grandma, goes through her teenage years (for example) full of confusing emotions, hopes, various tragedies, lessons, thoughts, perspectives…

(Granted, differences exist in the experiences children will have from generation to generation, but some things stay the same.  It’s arguably an advantage even, in certain instances, to see the way some things “used to” be  =)

and so, Grandma, (Before she became, “Grandma”.)  writes it all down!
What she thought, what she wanted, what she did, what others did, what she learned, what God taught her, what God did! =)

To have the journal of a girl who had gone through it, came out on the other side, and lived the rest of life -a journal containing what she thought before, during, and after seemingly (to a teenage girl, at least) unbearable circumstances- would have been a very dear gift to many of the girls I’ve known.

And for me, one of the reason’s I’ve kept a “journal” of sorts, is not only so I don’t explode from all these words and thoughts and questions bottled up inside of me, but also so that one day I might have the priviledge of providing such a gift to my children, and/or my grand-children.

Not necessarily as some meticulously prepared, Solemnly-Traditional, “you had better appreciate this”, sort of thing, but as more of a sincere conglomeration of grandpa’s thoughts and experiences, for them to do with it what they will -For God to do with it what He will.

So, I think she may have started one (my friend, that is) but I’m not sure.  She’s a busy person.

(aaand, I’ve said “so” sooo many times in this post!)

Anyway, yeah… journal, I think God would approve.
(And if I were your grandkid, I would love you -even more than I already do- for it!)

From 1959 Yearbook

I am Marcia Silverberg Lobman’s brother, PS duPont class of 1963.  I stumbled upon the reunion web site the other day and noted that it reported Marcia passed away.  Marcia died in Anchorage, Alaska on October 4th and a wonderful memorial service was held in New Orleans on October 14th.  I would very much like to hear from Marcia’s high school friends to learn more about Marcia’s high school years from the perspective of her friends, of which she had many.  Could you put the word out that I would welcome calls or emails from Marcia’s friends.

This has been a project that’s been going for almost a year. It’s of one of my sisters dogs, Toy. Sadly he was put to sleep this summer so see this as a little memoriam for the lovely and missed Toy.

Deze morgen om half zeven zat ik nietsvermoedend in de metro naar muziek te luisteren. Gisterenavond was ik vroeg in mijn bed gekropen, niets meer gehoord van dat schokkende nieuws . In een ooghoek zag ik een foto van VDB. Hij stond op de voorpagina van Het Laatste Nieuws,  iemand wat verderop stond die krant met een bedrukt gezicht te lezen. De kop langs de foto loog er niet om: ‘Frank Vandenbroucke is dood’. Slik.

Zijn palmares is niet te vergelijken met dat van een Eddy Merckx of een Lucien Van Impe. Toch mag Frank Vandenbroucke een van de grootste Belgische talenten aller tijden genoemd worden. Zijn carrière als prof was woelig. Hoge toppen, maar ook diepe dalen. Dat hij niet het onderste uit zijn carrière heeft gehaald, daar is iedereen het mee eens.  Hij was niet de modelprof zoals een Sven Nys dat nu is, maar VDB was nu eenmaal VDB. Hij en hij alleen wist wat er zich in dat kopje afspeelde. Voor sommigen was hij een enfant terrible, voor andere een God.

Bekijk hier het  fragment over VDB uit “10 jaar sport op Canvas”. Zowel zijn overwinning in LBL als Avila komen aan bod. Zeker het bekijken waard.

VDB bezorgde wielerminnend Vlaanderen enkele orgasmen waar we vandaag de dag nog met trots op terugkijken.  Of was u misschien vergeten hoe hij dolde met Michele Bartoli op de La Redoute tijdens de editie van Luik-Bastenaken-Luik in 1999. Met een indrukwekkende solo rondde hij nadien die wedstrijd succesvol af. Niemand die hem dat ooit nadeed.

Avila

1999 was zonder twijfel het beste jaar van VDB. In de Vuelta deed hij  dan misschien niet mee voor de eindzege, VDB speelde er met de pedalen. Hij won er twee etappes op indrukwekkende wijze, eentje ervan was de legendarische machtsontplooiing in Avila. “Vandenbroucke op en over Zarrabeitia, met de klap er over”, Michel Wuyts zag samen met Vlaanderen dat Vandenbroucke een ras apart was. Op dat topniveau was hij Merckxiaans, niet te stoppen en ongetwijfeld de beste coureur ter wereld.

Helaas brak VDB op het WK van 99 – daar waar hij niet kon verliezen – een beentje in zijn pols. Hij werd wonder boven wonder toch  nog zevende op een loodzwaar parcours. Nadien zou VDB nooit meer hetzelfde zijn. Zijn  charisma, de flair en zijn coup de pédale waren nog steeds aanwezig, maar in zijn hoofd was VDB iets te fragiel. Dopingaffaires, liefdesbreuken, Francesco del Ponte, een zelfmoordpoging en uitblijvende resultaten. Het zat VDB niet meer mee en hij verloor alsmaar meer krediet.  

Gisterenavond, 12 oktober 2009. Een zwarte dag voor het Belgisch wielrennen. Rond 23uur berichtten de eerste nieuwswebsites over het dramatische nieuws: Frank Vandenbroucke is tijdens zijn vakantie in Senegal gestorven aan een longembolie. De poulain van Nico Mattan is niet meer. Veel te vroeg.

Verdomme Frank, we gaan je missen.
