How about bringers of democracy being “cursed” by a Saudi prince this week.

The link goes to MEMRI, an excellent resource into Mideast media — a resource I don’t tap into near often enough. Long ago I used to read through MEMRI’s offerings on a regular basis, but it’s been out of my usual rotation for a while and ought to get back in there.

In an op-ed in the Saudi daily Al-Watan, Saudi Prince Saud bin Mansour bin Saud bin ‘Abd Al-’Aziz  took on Saudi and Arab liberals and reformists and the Western ideal of democracy. Without naming names, he said that these people were promoting Western democracy despite all its flaws and despite the fact that Islam is vastly superior. Calling democracy “demo-khratiyya” (i.e. “demo-mendacity”), the prince said that writers who criticized Saudi Arabia needed an “ideological bloodletting” to purge them of their corrupt ideas.

And here’s some of the prince’s rabbit pellets:

“Those who hasten to endorse the Western ‘openness’ – whose arrows appear gentle but [carry] a fatal load – have they forgotten our principles and our clarity? Have [these people] not noticed that the West is always marketing democracy as a secular and civil system, not a religious [system]? [Struck by] waves of political Alzheimer’s, they keep telling us that Islam is not democratic.

“A curse on anyone who wants to enforce this demo-khratiyya on all political and constitutional issues. A curse on all those dictatorships that masquerade as demo-khratiyya in order to destroy what they define as third-world countries!

“It should be remembered that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is the Custodian of the Two Holy Places, and that the sons or residents of the homeland have never been denied their rights. Our country’s structure is perfect [thanks to] Islam, which has established the [concept of] shura [i.e consultation] and the protection of rights, freedom, justice and anything [else] of value, as laid down by this generous religion.”

MEMRI – Against Backdrop of Clashes with the West Over Its Nuclear Program and the War in Yemen, Iran Tries to Instigate Rioting in Saudi Arabia During Hajj

Introduction

A few days before the Hajj (November 25-30, 2009), Iranian officials deliberately intensified statements calling on Shi’ites, and all Hajj pilgrims to Mecca, to conduct baraa – a kind of political protest against the infidels and apostates instituted by the founder of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini – against the U.S. and the Saudi Wahhabis, whom Iran currently claims are slaughtering Shi’ites in Yemen. [1] During the baraa ceremony, pilgrims demonstrate in denunciation of apostates and the enemies of Islam, chanting political slogans such as “Death to America” and “Death to Israel.”

In addition, Iranian senior officials, as well as the country’s leading newspapers, hinted and warned that the unrest in Yemen would not be bound by that country’s borders, and could spill over into Saudi Arabia, threatening the stability of the regime there.

Whispers of Surrender in Afghanistan?

It comes to our attention that the MEMRI Blog highlights an article from the Saudi al-Watan in Arabic that – according to an Afghan source – the United States is talking to the Taliban seeking to trade control of 5 provinces in exchange for the cessation of attacks on US bases. MEMRI summarizes:

An Afghan source in Kabul reports that U.S. Ambassador in Afghanistan Karl Eikenberry is holding secret talks with Taliban elements headed by the movement’s foreign minister, Ahmad Mutawakil, at a secret location in Kabul. According to the source, the U.S. has offered the Taliban control of the Kandahar, Helmand, Oruzgan, Kunar and Nuristan provinces in return for a halt to the Taliban missile attacks on U.S. bases.

Kunar province borders the Khyber Pass region where the majority of US and NATO supplies pass enroute from Pakistan. And the remaining four provinces constitute fully the southern 25% of Afghanistan’s territory.

This, if true, is a disturbing development.

Iran’s Answer to the West: ‘Iran Won’t Wait Forever’; ‘We’ve Already Begun Production [of 20%-Enriched Uranium]‘

Introduction

On November 9, 2009, U.S. President Barack Obama told Reuters in an interview that an unsettled political situation in Iran may be complicating efforts to seal a nuclear fuel deal between Tehran and major world powers. [1] This implies that a deal was reached with Iran during the nuclear talks in Vienna, but that Iran is having a hard time ratifying that deal due to criticism of it at home.

This depiction of the October 18-19, 2009 Vienna talks, and the explanation that the unstable political situation in Iran is making it difficult for the Iranian regime to announce that it agrees to the deal, are misleading. Iranian public statements since the end of the talks to date attest that:

1) No deal was ever reached during the Vienna talks. In his statements at the end of the talks – that Iran must respond to the proposal within two days – International Atomic Energy Agency director Mohamed ElBaradei was referring to a proposal to which Iran was not a party in any way, that is, the proposal drawn up by the West and by ElBaradei. According to Iran’s version of events, the Vienna talks did not deal at all with the future of its nuclear program, but with its request to purchase 20%-enriched uranium for its research reactor in Tehran. The West has tried, and is still trying, to set conditions for Iran’s request by insisting that it send 75% of its nuclear fuel, or approximately 1,200 kg, outside the country for enrichment; however, this enrichment will neutralize it so that it can no longer be used for military purposes. Iran rejected this condition, announcing that if it could not purchase the enriched uranium that it wanted, it would enrich it itself, and it even acknowledged that it had already begun doing so. Iran also emphasized that the two-day deadline set by ElBaradei has been misrepresented as an ultimatum – but that Iran has not recognized it as such and will not respond to any ultimatum.

[2] Iran’s claim is that it has submitted its own proposal, the main thrust of which is that it either purchase enriched uranium or enrich it itself, and is insisting that it is still waiting for a response to this proposal from the West.

2) Iran’s regime is currently stable. The crisis that followed the June presidential election is over, and it does not constitute a pretext for any delay on Iran’s part in giving an answer to the deal because no such deal was ever concluded, and also because there is no dispute whatsoever among the various political streams in Iran regarding the nuclear issue.

[3] President Obama’s claim that “an unsettled political situation in Iran may be complicating efforts to seal a nuclear fuel deal between Tehran and major world powers” reveals a fundamental misunderstanding of Iran’s internal power-structure, whereby Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei sets the country’s nuclear policy, and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad implements it.

Iran’s answer was conveyed to the IAEA a week after the Vienna talks by Iranian representative to the IAEA Ali Asghar Soltanieh, upon his return to Vienna. Iran chose not to publicly release its official response, but instead leaked its views via various regime spokesmen. However, both the West and the IAEA have also, for weeks, refrained from publicly revealing Iran’s position, so as not to expose the existence of a deep crisis in the West regarding how to deal with Iran.

The West continues to extend the deadline for Iran to weigh its proposal

[4] but the Iranian position is unchanging. However, despite Iran’s unwaveringly rejectionist stance, President Obama took advantage of the date of November 4 – the 30th anniversary of the 1979 takeover of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, celebrated every year across Iran – to declare that the U.S., under his leadership, seeks to establish new relations with Iran. He said “I have made it clear that the United States of America wants to move beyond this past, and seeks a relationship with the Islamic Republic of Iran based upon mutual interests and mutual respect.”

[5] To this, Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki responded by announcing that the road to establishing Iran-U.S. relations was still long, and called on the U.S. to change its policy in order to create a new atmosphere in the Middle East. He added that Iran had as yet noticed no actual change in U.S. policy. [6]

Furthermore, the Iranians, are claiming that it is they who are awaiting an answer from the West on their proposal – and that it is their patience that is wearing thin. The daily Kayhan, which is close to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, wrote on November 15 that the West must know that Iran’s patience has its limits; the issue of supplying nuclear fuel for the Tehran research reactor cannot wait forever. [7]

Iran regards itself as a superpower which is entitled to nuclear energy for civilian purposes, and stresses that it is unwilling to debate this status or its nuclear program with anyone, just as no other nuclear power – including Germany and Japan, which are known as nuclear powers – do not negotiate their nuclear status or their nuclear programs with anyone. Iran emphasizes that, like other nuclear countries, the only issue it is willing to discuss is that of supervision, and that these negotiations can only be conducted vis-à-vis the IAEA, and not vis-à-vis the 5+1 or the U.N. Security Council.

Following are statements by Iranian spokesmen published since the Vienna talks began, expressing Iran’s official position on the nuclear issue and on the issue of the talks. The statements reveal that Iran has actually given no concrete response at all to ElBaradei’s proposal, and that it expecting to begin negotiations on its own proposal. The statements also reveal Iran’s positions regarding ElBaradei’s proposal, even though they have not been released officially.

I. Iran’s Response Did Not Include an Answer to the West’s Proposal

Iran declared that no meaningful response has yet been given to ElBaradei’s proposal, and that such a response would be forthcoming only if talks were begun with Iran on its own proposal and on its reservations. [8] Confirmation of this version of events was given by French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, who on October 30 demanded that Iran respond immediately to ElBaradei’s proposal. [9]

Asked about U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s statement that the West was becoming “impatient” with Iran, Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said mockingly, “Oh, really?” [10]

Majlis National Security Committee rapporteur Kazem Jalali confirmed that Iran had received the proposal on uranium exchange along with other proposals, but was promising nothing regarding it. The West, he added, was manipulating the issue of ElBaradei’s proposal (by giving the impression that Iran was meant to approve it). [11]

II. Iran’s Position on its Nuclear Program: Iran “Will Not Relinquish One Iota of its Nuclear Program”

Iran’s stance was expressed in statements by Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and in several statements by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Khamenei, who made strong anti-U.S. pronouncements on the eve of the U.S. Embassy takeover anniversary, clarified: “If anyone intends to violate the rights of the Iranian nation, the nation will firmly stand up to them and will make them kneel down.” [12]

On November 15 Ahmadinejad announced that “the fundamental rights of the Iranian nation [in the nuclear issue] are not subject to negotiation; [Iran's] nuclear activity and cooperation will be carried out only in the framework of the IAEA… The enemies have politicized Iran’s nuclear dossier as much as they could in order to subjugate the Iranian nation, but they have been defeated.” [13]

In an October 29 speech in Mashhad, in northeastern Iran, Ahmadinejad said that Iran “will not relinquish one iota of its nuclear program.” He also boasted that Iran had managed to divert the discussion from its nuclear program to solving global problems, as it had proposed. He added that the West had changed its approach to Iran from confrontation and sanctions against it to nuclear cooperation with it, and explained that if the West sold nuclear fuel to Iran, as Iran had requested, it would give Iran an opportunity to test the integrity of the superpowers and of the IAEA. [14]

In another statement, on November 1, Ahmadinejad said, “[While] the enemies have used all means at their disposal, the Iranian people has succeeded in showing [its] might… and they [i.e. the enemy] remained like a mosquito.” Ahmadinejad also said that his government had no faith in the West: “Considering the history of the Western powers, the Iranian government is coming to the negotiations with no trust. But reality will dictate to the West how to act vis-à-vis the Iranian people.” He added, “The Westerners today know that without Iran’s cooperation, they will not be able to run the world…” [15]

At a November 10 press conference in Turkey, Ahmadinejad said that Iran was not conducting negotiations in Vienna on its nuclear rights, and added, “Today we are producing nuclear fuel for our nuclear reactors, and we are expanding our nuclear fuel [production] plants. Since we need at least 50,000 centrifuges to supply fuel for a single nuclear reactor, we aspire to expand our nuclear fuel production capacity to industrial levels, so that we can meet our own needs at any time. Naturally, we will also export the surplus under IAEA oversight.” [16]

III. Iran’s Attitude towards ElBaradei’s Vienna Proposal: Rejection

Majlis National Security Committee chairman Ala Al-Din Boroujerdi announced for the first time in public on November 7, 2009 that Iran was rejecting the Vienna draft. He said, “Iran will not give any of [its] 1,200 kg of fuel to another party in order to receive 20%-[enriched] fuel, whether gradually or all at once; it will not be done, and [this proposal] is null and void.” Boroujerdi also stressed that the fuel-supplying countries must find a new way to provide fuel for the Tehran reactor. He said that Iran’s IAEA representative Soltanieh was conducting negotiations on this matter. [17]

Following Russia’s proposal to Iran to continue negotiations in any case, Iranian Supreme National Security Council secretary Saeed Jalili said that Iran’s technical reservations vis-à-vis the Vienna agreement should be taken into account, and that Iran welcomed the continuation of talks based on the package of proposals that it had submitted to the 5+1. [18]

The stance overwhelmingly taken by the regime newspapers and Majlis circles was one of rejection of the West’s demand that Iran send uranium to a third country. The Jomhouri-e Eslami daily, which is identified with the religious seminaries in Qom, declared, citing senior officials, that Iran would not sign the Vienna draft and would not send any quantity whatsoever of uranium for enrichment outside the country. [19]

IV. Iran Calls for Negotiations on ElBaradei’s Vienna Proposal – But Only on a Small, Limited Quantity of Uranium

On November 1, 2009, Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki stated that the IAEA technical committee is to meet to begin a new round of talks, in which the “technical” reservations that Iran had conveyed to the West as its October 30 response to the Vienna draft would be examined. [20]

In contrast, at the Malaysia D-8 summit of Islamic countries, Mottaki admitted that Iran only wanted the IAEA technical committee to meet to discuss “the economic and technical reservations” that Iran had submitted in its response. [21]

However, previously, on October 26, Mottaki had declared that Iran might transfer some of its nuclear fuel – the part that it does not currently need. [22]

In an interview on his website, Iranian Expediency Council secretary Mohsen Rezai assessed that Iran is willing to transfer 280-350 kg of 3.5%-enriched uranium that it possesses, so as to ensure the operation of the Tehran research reactor for the next 25 to 30 years. However, at the same time, he stressed that no more than 350 kg of enriched uranium should be transferred, and added that in order to assure the operation of the Tehran research reactor for the next 20 years, Iran needs only 30 kg of 20%-enriched uranium. [23]

The Ayandenews website, identified with Rezai, reported that Khamenei had rejected ElBaradei’s plan for an uranium exchange, and stated that he was willing to look at the proposal for the simultaneous exchange of 350 kg of 3.5%-enriched uranium possessed by Iran for 58 kg of 20%-enriched uranium. [24]

On October 30, the official Iranian news agency IRNA reported, citing an Iranian official, that Iran wants to transfer 5%-enriched uranium simultaneously with its receipt of 20%-enriched uranium for the Tehran research reactor. [25] It was not reported whether this transfer would take place all at once, or whether the quantity involved would comprise all the enriched uranium that Iran possesses.

Majlis National Security Committee chairman Ala Al-Din Boroujerdi said that if it were not possible for Iran to purchase 20%-enriched uranium, which was its first preference, it might go for a limited exchange deal if it were to first receive uranium enriched to 20%. [26] Committee rapporteur Jalali also said that the deal had to be contingent upon a simultaneous exchange of uranium, since the other countries involved in the exchange were untrustworthy. [27]

On November 6, the Tabnak website assessed that although the issue of the Vienna draft was not clear, two points were: one, that Iran would hand over only some of its 3.5%-enriched uranium reserves – only 350-800 kg – in an exchange deal; and two, that Iran would continue to enrich uranium and would make no commitment regarding this enrichment. [28]

The Press TV website reported that Iran had submitted a new proposal to purchase nuclear fuel for the Tehran reactor. Experts close to the nuclear talks told the website that the deal had two phases, involving a simultaneous exchange, with the IAEA sealing off 400 kg of 3.5%-enriched uranium at each phase, until the transfer of 20%-enriched uranium to the exchange site was complete. According to the experts, the West has still not responded to this proposal. [29]

V. Iran Threatens to Enrich Uranium to 20% – And More

During his visit to Malaysia for the D-8 conference, Foreign Minister Mottaki also said that Iran would not stop enriching uranium on its soil, because the nuclear deal that could be in the offing dealt only with supplying nuclear fuel to the Tehran research reactor, and was not connected to the enrichment of uranium that is currently ongoing in Iran. He said that Iran’s first demand was to acquire nuclear fuel for the Tehran reactor, but that if agreement was not obtained, it might enrich uranium on its soil to a level of 20%. [30]

In an interview with ISNA, Iranian Atomic Energy Organization member Mohammad Ghannadi said, “Even if they do not give [us the nuclear fuel that we need] we will produce it ourselves, and it is no problem for us to do so…” In response to the question of how long Iran can supply nuclear fuel enriched to 20% for the Tehran research reactor, Ghannadi said, “The option of production is in our hands, and we also have begun production. But the relevant officials should be the ones to say how long it will take.” [31]

Also, Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami stressed in his Friday sermon on November 6 that “nobody will make a deal on national nuclear rights; neither will anybody turn a blind eye to the legal right of the nation. If the Westerners wish to play on us and refuse to deliver fuel to the Tehran research reactor, Iranian nuclear scientists will step forward and provide the fuel as well…” [32]

Majlis deputy speaker Mohammad Hassan Abu-Torabi said that any precondition on providing nuclear fuel for the Tehran research reactor was unacceptable to Iran, and would express deviation from IAEA principles. He said that if no agreement was reached, Iran must continue its enrichment policy, under IAEA regulations. [33]

The head of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee’s Foreign Liaison Committee, Hossein Ebrahimi, said, “We are announcing that the deal for exchanging Iranian 3.5% nuclear fuel for 20% nuclear fuel from a Western party is out of the question… We maintain that Iran is capable of enriching uranium to a level of 20% on its own.” [34]

Additionally, rapporteur Jalali said that if it was not possible for Iran to buy nuclear fuel, “we ourselves will increase enrichment that is under 5% to enrichment that is over 5%.” [35] He reiterated this position on November 9, saying that Iran had two choices: purchasing enriched uranium, or enriching uranium within Iran. Iranian export of uranium, he clarified, was against Iran’s interests. [36]

In a November 15 editorial titled “Iran Won’t Wait Forever,” the Kayhan daily wrote that Iran had given its answer to the Vienna draft a month ago, and that it was now waiting for the West’s response. The paper said that in principle Iran had not ruled out the Vienna deal under which it would purchase nuclear fuel, and that it was implementing its reservations such that along with supplying the nuclear fuel needed for the Tehran research reactor, it would keep strategic reserves of nuclear material in Iran. This issue, and other reasons, had led to the West’s inability to respond to Iran’s reservations, and therefore the deal was being delayed. The paper warned that the West must know that Iran’s patience had its limits, and that the issue of the supply of fuel to the Tehran research reactor could not wait forever, and concluded that “the possibility of enriching uranium to a higher percentage on Iranian soil is one of those choices that are irreversible once they are on the table.” [37]

On October 18, Abolfazl Zohrehvand, advisor to Iranian Supreme National Security Council secretary Saeed Jalili, told the Iranian news agency IRNA, “Circumstances may arise under which Iran will require uranium enriched to 63%, which it will have to either purchase or manufacture itself under IAEA supervision.” [38]

What Is the Purpose of Iran’s 1,500 Kg of Enriched Uranium?

It should be noted that operation of the Tehran reactor requires only 30 kg of 20%-enriched uranium, and that according to Iranian experts, the reactor is meant to operate efficiently for another decade only. Accordingly, Iran does not need the 1,200 kg of uranium in its possession to be enriched to 20%. The enrichment by the West will turn the uranium into fuel rods, which will prevent it from being used for military purposes. This, apparently, is why Iran is unwilling to transfer most of its enriched uranium reserves to a third country, preferring to keep it in its possession.

It will also be remembered that Iran does not need uranium in order to operate the Bushehr reactor, which, in any case, is not yet operative, because it is to receive fuel rods from Russia under the 2005 agreement that it signed with it; the fuel rod transfer began in 2007.

In this context, it should be noted that Ahmad Qarib, Iranian Atomic Energy Organization Scientific Committee member and former director of the organization’s research institute, stated that Iran does not need all the uranium that it has already enriched, because it has no nuclear plants and reactors that require it for fuel in order to operate. [39]

ElBaradei proposed an additional concession to Iran, in a November 7, 2009 interview – the transfer of Iran’s stock of uranium to Turkey. “It should work,” ElBaradei said in an interview on the Charlie Rose on PBS. “Iran has a lot of trust in Turkey.” The Obama administration would agree to this proposal because the U.S. is “very comfortable with Turkey,” he added.

Introduction

Représenter les juifs – et parfois aussi les sionistes – comme «les descendants de singes et de porcs» est une pratique du discours public extrêmement répandue aujourd’hui dans les mondes arabe et islamique.

Par exemple, dans un sermon hebdomadaire d’avril 2002, le cheikh d’al-Azhar Muhammad Sayyid Tantawi, religieux du rang le plus élevé dans le monde musulman sunnite, appelait les juifs «ennemis d’Allah, descendants de singes et de porcs» (1).

Dans un de ses sermons, le cheikh saoudien Abd al-Rahman al-Sudayyis, imam et prédicateur à la mosquée al-Haraam – la plus importante mosquée de La Mecque – implorait Allah d’anéantir les juifs. Il préconisait aux Arabes d’abandonner les initiatives de paix avec eux ; parce qu’ils sont «le rebut du genre humain, les rats de l’univers, les violateurs de pactes et d’accords, les meurtriers des prophètes, et la descendance de singes et de porcs» (2) .

«Lisez l’histoire», disait al-Sudayyis dans un autre sermon, «et vous comprendrez que les juifs d’hier sont les parents maléfiques des juifs d’aujourd’hui, qui sont une descendance maléfique, des infidèles ; ils déforment les paroles [des autres], adorent un veau, sont des meurtriers de prophètes, renient les prophéties… ils sont le rebut du genre humain ’qu’Allah a maudits et transformés en singes et en porcs’… Tels sont les juifs, un continuum ininterrompu de tromperie, d’obstination, d’immoralité, de mal et de corruption…» (3).

Dans un sermon prononcé à la mosquée Said al-Jandoul d’al-Taif, le cheikh saoudien Ba’d bin Abdallah al-Ajameh al-Ghamidi, expliquait que «les caractéristiques des juifs» étaient présentes en tous temps et en tous lieux. «Le comportement actuel des frères de singes et de porcs, leur traîtrise, leur violation des accords, leur profanation des lieux saints… sont liés aux actes de leurs ancêtres au début de l’Islam – ce qui prouve la grande similitude qui existe entre les juifs qui vivent aujourd’hui et ceux qui vivaient à l’aube de l’Islam.» (4).

Dans un sermon d’août 2001, le cheikh Ibrahim Madhi, fonctionnaire de l’Autorité palestinienne et imam de la mosquée Cheikh Ijlin, la principale mosquée de Gaza City, demanda aux Palestiniens d’oublier leurs dissensions internes et de tourner toutes les armes contre les juifs : « les lances doivent être dirigées contre les juifs, ennemis d’Allah, la nation maudite dans le livre d’Allah. Allah [les] décrivit comme des singes et des porcs, adorateurs d’un veau et d’idoles…» (5).

Voir, dans les juifs «les descendants de singes et de porcs» est également commun dans l’Islam chiite. De telles affirmations se trouvent, par exemple, dans un discours prononcé en 1998 par le secrétaire général du Hezbollah Hassan Nasrallah, à l’occasion de la fête chiite de ‘Ashoura. Nasrallah y regrettait que la fête coïncidât «avec le cinquantième anniversaire de la catastrophe historique affligeante et amère que représente l’établissement de l’État des descendants de singes et de porcs – les juifs sionistes – sur la terre de Palestine et de Jérusalem». Il conclut son discours par ces mots : «… Nous réaffirmons le slogan de la lutte contre le grand Satan et crions, comme l’an dernier : ’Mort à l’Amérique’. Aux meurtriers des prophètes, les descendants de singes et de porcs, nous disons : … ’Mort à Israël’…» (6).

Ces déclarations ne sont pas le fait des seuls religieux et prédicateurs. Sous leur direction, les meneurs de l’opinion publique du monde arabe appellent aussi les juifs «descendants de singes et de porcs». L’image a imprégné la conscience publique jusque dans l’éducation des enfants. En mai 2002, Iqraa, la chaîne de télévision satellitaire égypto-saoudienne, qui, à en croire son site Web (7), a pour but de «mettre en valeur les aspects de la culture arabe islamique qui inspirent le respect», «de mettre en valeur la vraie image tolérante de l’Islam et de réfuter les accusations portées contre l’Islam», et «d’implanter un esprit de compréhension mutuelle et de dialogue entre les membres de la nation et d’ouvrir des canaux de relation culturelle avec les cultures des autres nations», interrogeait une «vraie fille musulmane» de trois ans et demi à propos des juifs. Dans le programme «Le magazine de la femme musulmane », on demanda à la fillette si elle aimait les juifs ; elle répondit «Non». Quand on lui demanda pourquoi elle ne les aimait pas, elle répondit que les juifs étaient «des singes et des porcs». «Qui a dit cela ?» demanda l’animateur. La fillette répondit «Notre Dieu». «Où a-t-il dit cela ?» «Dans le Coran.» À la fin de l’interview, l’animateur satisfait dit : «Aucun [parent] ne pourrait souhaiter qu’Allah leur donne une fille plus croyante qu’elle… Qu’Allah la bénisse, de même que son père et sa mère. La prochaine génération d’enfants doit être une génération de vrais musulmans. Nous devons les éduquer maintenant qu’ils sont enfants, pour qu’ils soient de vrais musulmans.» (8).

En avril 2002, un talk-show hebdomadaire sur la chaîne de télévision satellitaire al-Jazeera, «La direction opposée» – qui prétend compter des dizaines de millions de spectateurs de par le monde -, était consacré à la question : «Le sionisme est-il pire que le nazisme ?» L’animateur, le docteur Faisal al-Qassam, évoqua l’opinion d’un spectateur qui écrivait, depuis le site Web de la chaîne : «Les fils de Sion, que notre Dieu a décrits comme fils de singes et de porcs, ne seront découragés que s’il y a un véritable holocauste, qui les détruira tous en une fois, en même temps que les traîtres – ceux qui collaborent avec eux, la lie de cette nation [islamique].» (9).

Salim ‘Azzouz, journaliste au quotidien d’opposition égyptien al-Ahrar, affilié au Parti libéral religieux, décrit ainsi le retrait d’Israël du Liban, en 2000 : «Ils s’enfuirent avec juste la peau sur leurs corps, comme fuient des porcs. Et pourquoi dire ’comme’, puisqu’ils sont véritablement des porcs et des singes ?» (10).

Le présent article veut situer ces références aux juifs comme singes et porcs dans leur contexte religieux et historique et montrer leurs racines dans les sources religieuses musulmanes.

Chapitre 1

Les sources religieuses islamiques à propos des juifs – Les ’descendants de singes et de porcs’

Selon l’Islam, les anciens juifs furent transformés en animaux pour avoir transgressé la parole de Dieu (11). Ce châtiment divin est mentionné dans les sources les plus importantes de la loi religieuse islamique, tant dans le récit de la révélation divine dans le Coran que dans les hadiths (traditions du prophète Mahomet) extrêmement fiables, compilés par les principaux savants du IXe siècle, Muslim et al-Bukhari (12), qui mentionnent aussi des souris, des lézards et d’autres animaux, dans le même contexte.

Le châtiment divin contre les juifs est mentionné dans trois versets du Coran : « …Ce sont ceux qu’Allah a rejetés, sur qui sa colère est tombée et qu’il a transformés les uns en singes et en porcs…» (5 : 60) ; « Vous avez certainement appris la fin de ceux parmi vous qui ont transgressé le sabbat, en conséquence de quoi nous les avons condamnés : Soyez comme des singes, méprisés » (2 : 65) (13) ; et «quand, au lieu de s’amender, ils persistèrent davantage dans la poursuite de ce qui leur était interdit, nous les condamnâmes : Soyez comme des singes, méprisés» (14) (7 : 166).

La littérature arabe (adab) traita aussi de la transformation des juifs en animaux. Dans son traité du XIXe siècle, Le Livre des animaux, le plus grand de ces auteurs, al-Jahiz (15), signale qu’il est généralement pensé que le guépard, l’anguille, la fourmi blanche, la souris et le lézard étaient à l’origine des juifs. Il mentionne la tradition qui raconte comment un sage vit un homme qui mangeait un lézard et lui dit : «Sache que tu as mangé un des cheikhs des fils d’Israël.» Il ne signale pas pourquoi ils furent changés en animaux, mais il dit que la preuve en est que «la patte du lézard ressemble à la main de l’homme» (16).

Chapitre 2

Commentaire coranique : les pécheurs chrétiens et musulmans furent aussi transformés en singes et en porcs

Bien que dans le Coran la transformation en singes et en porcs ne soit liée qu’aux seuls juifs, le commentaire du Coran lie aussi la transformation en singes et en porcs à des chrétiens. Le verset 5 : 112-115 raconte que les apôtres voulaient savoir si Dieu pouvait faire descendre du ciel une table chargée de nourriture. Jésus adressa cette demande à Dieu et elle fut exaucée. Mais Dieu l’avertit que quiconque mangerait à la table et blasphémerait par la suite serait puni comme personne n’avait encore été puni. Dans son commentaire sur ce verset, le célèbre commentateur du Xe siècle, al-Tabari (17), dit que, malgré l’avertissement divin, certains blasphémèrent et furent punis en étant transformés en singes et en porcs – ou, dans une autre version, seulement en porcs (18).

Un autre verset qui lie des chrétiens à des singes et à des porcs est le verset 3 : 61 ; selon le commentaire de ce verset, une délégation de chrétiens de Najran vint à Médine pour débattre avec le prophète de la question : Jésus était-il fils de Dieu, comme le prétendaient les chrétiens, ou chair et sang, sans père ni mère, comme le prétendaient les musulmans ? Après avoir constaté qu’ils ne pouvaient pas s’accorder, ils décidèrent de se rencontrer à nouveau et de se maudire les uns les autres, pensant que la malédiction divine frapperait ceux d’entre eux qui mentaient. Quand la délégation chrétienne vit que le Prophète avait amené avec lui ses parents de la famille de ‘Ali bin Abu Taleb, ils furent effrayés, reconnurent sa mission prophétique et décidèrent de faire la paix avec lui, de reconnaître son autorité et de payer la jizya [impôt payé par les non-musulmans sous domination musulmane]. Selon un hadith du Prophète, cité surtout dans des sources chiites, si au lieu de cela ils l’avaient maudit, ils auraient été transformés en singes et en porcs (19).

Dans les traditions islamiques, les musulmans furent aussi menacés d’être transformés en singes et en porcs. Cependant, pour les juifs et les chrétiens, ce châtiment était un évènement du passé, tandis que, pour les musulmans, il serait infligé au jour du Jugement. Dans son article « Apes, Pigs, and the Islamic Identity », le chercheur U. Rubin indique que les musulmans menacés d’être transformés en animaux n’étaient pas des pécheurs ordinaires, mais ceux dont le péché avait une nature juive ou chrétienne. L’usage d’un châtiment spécifique aux juifs et aux chrétiens avait pour but de combattre l’influence juive et chrétienne dans la société islamique, qui menaçait l’unité de l’identité islamique. L’identité islamique était censée être basée sur l’unité et la moralité ; tout musulman qui imitait les juifs ou les chrétiens constituait donc une menace pour cette identité.

L’unité musulmane était menacée par les musulmans qui avaient rejeté des conceptions [musulmanes] orthodoxes et étaient suspects de suivre l’exemple judéo-chrétien. Aussi, la plupart des traditions concernant des musulmans qui devaient être punis, au jour du Jugement, en étant changés en animaux, se rapportaient-elles aux Qadaris. Les Qadaris rejetaient l’idée de prédestination (qadar) et leurs opinions étaient perçues, par ceux qui les combattaient, comme étant d’origine judéo-chrétienne ; aussi étaient-ils stigmatisés de la manière très spécifique dont l’étaient les juifs et les chrétiens, en étant, comme eux, transformés en singes et en porcs. En outre, les idées des Qadaris étaient très répandues dans la ville de Basra ; Basra est donc décrite dans les traditions comme l’endroit où cette transformation devait probablement avoir lieu.

Le danger encouru par la moralité islamique provenait des musulmans qui adoptaient des aspects profanes de la civilisation judéo-chrétienne. La transformation eschatologique en singes et en porcs était donc également associée aux musulmans qui commettaient des péchés comme boire du vin, jouer d’instruments de musique en compagnie de chanteuses esclaves, et, parfois, porter des vêtements de soie ; d’autres péchés étaient le faux témoignage, l’usure et l’homosexualité. Certains de ces péchés étaient réputés spécifiques aux juifs et aux chrétiens (usure, vin, musique) ; d’autres étaient l’apanage de tous les non-Arabes (ornements de soie). Ces comportements étaient censés constituer une menace contre l’identité islamique ; les transgresseurs étaient donc menacés de ce châtiment judéo-chrétien classique (20).

L’idée de la transformation en animaux fut également utilisée par les deux principaux courants de l’Islam, les sunnites et les chiites, dans leurs reproches mutuels. Selon la tradition chiite, le deuxième calife musulman, Omar bin al-Khattab, particulièrement admiré par les sunnites, parcourt la terre sous la forme d’un hibou. Une autre tradition chiite veut que le meurtrier de Hussein bin ‘Ali, petit-fils du Prophète admiré par les chiites, fut puni en étant changé en chien à quatre yeux. Le meurtrier fut aussi condamné à chercher désespérément de l’eau sans parvenir à en boire, même quand il en trouvait, parce qu’il avait empêché la famille de Hussein d’atteindre une source d’eau à la bataille de Karbala (21).

Inversement, la tradition sunnite affirme que certains chiites de Médine et d’autres lieux furent changés en singes et en porcs, et que leurs cœurs et leurs visages changèrent de forme au moment de leur mort. Cela se situe dans le contexte de l’accusation selon laquelle les chiites ressemblent beaucoup aux juifs, «ce qui ne devrait pas surprendre», comme l’explique le docteur Abu Muntasir al-Balaoushi, sur un site Web sunnite (22), «puisque les juifs ont inventé la chi’a (la religion chiite) et que [la chi’a] est imprégnée de croyances et principes [juifs] depuis le jour de sa création.»

Chapitre 3

Les racines historiques du châtiment

La croyance que des gens étaient transformés par une intervention surnaturelle – d’habitude un châtiment divin – en animaux, en statues ou en étoiles, était courante parmi les Arabes et d’autres peuples avant l’Islam.

Dans les sources juives et chrétiennes (Genèse, 19 : 26), la femme de Lot fut changée en colonne de sel quand elle viola l’interdiction divine de regarder en arrière vers Sodome (23). Une autre histoire familière de la période préislamique est celle d’Isaf et de Na’ila – deux amants qui firent un pèlerinage à La Mecque. Quand ils se trouvèrent seuls dans la Ka’abah, ils forniquèrent et furent immédiatement changés en pierre. Al-Jahiz dit que la crevette grise était, à l’origine, un couturier qui vola du fil et fut transformé en une créature qui se faufile, pour lui rappeler son crime. Al-Jahiz dit aussi que le serpent avait, auparavant, la forme d’un chameau, mais que Dieu le punit en le forçant à ramper sur la terre. Des légendes iraniennes attribuent à certains animaux – ours, éléphants, tortues, vautours, corbeaux, hiboux, frelons, huppes, singes, porcs, chiens et lézards – des transformations qui eurent lieu après le début de l’Islam. La planète Vénus était prétendument une prostituée qui monta aux cieux et devint une étoile, en vertu de sa connaissance du plus grand nom d’Allah. Dans Les Mille et une nuits, des gens sont fréquemment changés en animaux et reprennent par la suite leur forme originelle, normalement par aspersion d’eau (24).

Différents chercheurs ont essayé d’expliquer l’origine du châtiment de transformation, mentionné dans le Coran. F. Viré soutient que le châtiment coranique tire son origine de la fameuse légende citée dans le Talmud, où certains des constructeurs de la Tour de Babel furent maudits par Dieu et transformés en singes. Il base cette histoire sur le traité talmudique Sanhedrin (25), où les constructeurs qui cherchaient à atteindre le ciel «furent divisés en trois groupes. Le premier dit : ’Montons et habitons là’ ; le deuxième dit ’Montons et adorons les étoiles’ ; et l’autre dit ’Montons et faisons la guerre’. Ceux qui dirent ’Montons et habitons là’, Dieu les dispersa. Ceux qui dirent ’Montons et faisons la guerre’ furent transformés en singes, en fantômes, en démons et en esprits mauvais. Et ceux qui dirent ’Montons et adorons les étoiles’, Dieu confondit pour eux les langues de toute la terre.» (26).

Ilse Lichtenstadter explique que ces versets faisaient partie de la tentative du prophète Mahomet de gagner le soutien des juifs de La Mecque, en les menaçant d’un châtiment sévère s’ils persistaient à refuser de se joindre à lui. Elle identifie deux sources anciennes pour le châtiment de la transformation en singes, mentionné dans le Coran. Les singes jouaient un rôle dans les légendes ou dans les rituels de deux civilisations anciennes. En Inde, le dieu-singe, Hanuman, était très connu, et des récits le concernant atteignirent la péninsule arabe par l’entremise du commerce des épices entre l’Inde et l’Arabie méridionale. Les anciens Égyptiens avaient le dieu-babouin Thoth, représenté d’ordinaire comme un singe à tête de chien. Les histoires d’une race de gens à tête de chien, associés au babouin, atteignirent aussi la chrétienté. Selon une légende grecque, saint Christophe avait jadis appartenu à une race d’hommes à tête de chien, et lors de sa conversion au christianisme, il lui avait été donné de parler comme un humain au lieu d’aboyer. Il fut martyrisé, (peut-être) pendant le règne de l’empereur romain Dèce, au IIIe siècle ; son symbole est une tête de chien. L’influence de la civilisation syro-chrétienne atteignit la péninsule arabe ; les légendes d’hommes à tête de chien peuvent avoir été connues du Prophète.

Lichtenstadter décrit aussi le comportement des animaux et le châtiment auquel il correspond. Les porcs sont reliés au culte des idoles, vu qu’ils étaient offerts en sacrifices idolâtriques, aussi le Coran interdit-il d’en manger. Dans des sources anciennes, le singe est identifié au mal, aux démons et au diable ; ceux qui étaient transformés en singes étaient donc bannis de la société humaine et rejetés dans la sphère du diable.

L’influence de l’idée de transformation en animaux sur la conscience musulmane est nette à travers l’histoire. En Espagne, par exemple, pendant les périodes de friction entre les différentes communautés religieuses, les musulmans appelaient les juifs «singes» et les chrétiens « porcs et chiens». En Afrique du nord, sous la dynastie musulmane aghlabide (IXe au XIe siècle), les juifs étaient obligés de porter sur l’épaule un morceau de tissu avec l’image d’un singe, et les chrétiens devaient porter un morceau de tissu avec l’image d’un porc. Ils devaient aussi coller ces images sur les portes de leurs maisons respectives (28). En outre, le concept de transformation influença la loi alimentaire islamique. En général, les chiites augmentèrent le nombre d’animaux supposés être d’origine humaine et interdirent leur consommation. Par exemple, le lièvre était inclus sur cette liste. Par contraste, les sunnites eurent tendance à réduire la liste ; bien qu’il y ait des traditions sunnites concernant des gens transformés en animaux, elles ne sont pas souvent citées par les juristes sunnites quand ils fixent les lois alimentaires (29) .

Chapitre 4

Commentaire islamique sur la transformation des juifs en singes et en porcs

A. Les circonstances du châtiment

Dans son vaste traité sur le Coran, le commentateur du Xe siècle, al-Tabari explique que les juifs furent transformés en animaux parce qu’ils refusèrent d’accepter le vendredi comme jour de repos. Les juifs, dit-il, comme les autres nations, reçurent l’ordre de faire du vendredi leur jour saint «à cause de ses vertus et de son importance dans les cieux et aux yeux des anges, et parce que le jour du Jugement tomberait un vendredi». Les musulmans acceptèrent le vendredi comme le jour le plus important, tandis que les juifs refusèrent, prétendant que le samedi était le meilleur jour, parce qu’Allah avait créé les cieux, la terre et tout le reste en six jours, et s’était reposé le septième. Les chrétiens aussi refusèrent de suivre le commandement de Dieu d’honorer le sixième jour, disant que le dimanche était le meilleur jour. Allah instruisit Jésus de les autoriser à faire du dimanche leur jour de repos pourvu qu’ils le fassent selon certains préceptes ; cependant, les chrétiens ne suivirent pas ces préceptes et leur insubordination est mentionnée dans le Coran. Allah dit aussi à Moïse d’autoriser les juifs à faire du samedi leur jour de repos, à la condition que, ce jour-là, ils s’abstiennent de pêcher et de tout travail permis pendant les jours de la semaine. Cependant, les juifs ne satisfirent pas à ces conditions et c’est pourquoi ils furent punis.

Les juifs qui furent transformés en animaux sont communément identifiés par le commentaire coranique à des habitants du village d’Iliya (30), situé sur la côte de la mer Rouge. Le commentaire coranique raconte comment Allah fit apparaître, un samedi, de grands bancs de poissons et les fit disparaître avant le coucher du soleil, pour mettre à l’épreuve la foi des juifs et leur obéissance à ses commandements. Cela fut trop dur pour les juifs, qui trouvèrent des moyens de contourner l’interdit divin de pêcher le samedi. Ibn Abbas, cousin du prophète Mahomet et un des premiers commentateurs du Coran, écrivit qu’un juif prit en secret un poisson le samedi, l’attacha avec une ficelle à un piquet dans le sol. Le jour suivant, il tira le poisson et le mangea. Quand il vit qu’il n’était pas puni, il répéta ses actes le samedi suivant, et encore le samedi suivant. Finalement les voisins sentirent l’odeur du poisson de sa cuisine, et se mirent à suivre son exemple. Longtemps ils mangèrent en secret, et Allah ne se hâta pas de les punir, mais quand ils se mirent à pêcher ouvertement et à vendre leurs prises interdites sur le marché, ils furent punis.

Al-Tabari cite une autre tactique utilisée par les juifs pour contourner l’interdit. Un juif qui avait une folle envie de poisson creusa un puits avec un tunnel conduisant du puits à la mer. Le samedi, il ouvrit le tunnel de sorte que les vagues entraînent le poisson dans le puits. Le dimanche, l’homme cuisit le poisson. L’odeur du poisson en train de cuire parvint aux voisins, qui suivirent son exemple, et les juifs prirent bientôt l’habitude de manger du poisson pêché le samedi. Quand les sages les avertirent, ils prétendirent qu’ils pêchaient le dimanche, quand ils retiraient le poisson du puits, et non le samedi quand ils ouvraient le tunnel (31).

Tous les juifs n’agirent pas de la même façon. Les commentateurs du Coran identifient trois groupes dans ce contexte : certains juifs pêchèrent et violèrent le précepte divin de ne pas pêcher le samedi ; certains autres avertirent les pêcheurs du châtiment d’Allah et leur interdirent de continuer à agir de la sorte. Les autres tinrent leur langue ; bien que ne mangeant pas le poisson pêché par les pêcheurs le samedi, ils n’interdirent pas aux pêcheurs de pêcher (32).

En pareille situation, quand les pêcheurs refusèrent d’arrêter de pêcher, ceux qui suivirent le précepte divin décidèrent qu’ils ne voulaient plus vivre dans le même village que les pêcheurs, et ils construisirent un mur entre eux. Un jour, on ne vit pas les pêcheurs sortir de leurs maisons. Ceux qui observaient le précepte divin escaladèrent le mur et allèrent contrôler les maisons, qu’ils trouvèrent verrouillées. Quand ils ouvrirent les portes, ils virent que tous – hommes, femmes et enfants – avaient été changés en singes. «Ils verrouillèrent leurs portes, le soir, quand les gens s’enferment dans leurs maisons, et ils se réveillèrent en singes.» (33). al-Qurtubi, commentateur andalou du Coran, au XIIIe siècle, (34) , dit que les singes identifièrent leurs parents humains, s’approchèrent d’eux, sentirent leurs vêtements et pleurèrent. Par contre, les humains ne purent identifier leurs parents, mais ils leur dirent : « ’Ne vous avons-nous pas interdit [de violer la parole de Dieu] ?’ Les singes firent oui de la tête.» Selon certains commentateurs, les jeunes du village devinrent des singes, tandis que les plus âgés devenaient des porcs (35).

Dans sa dissertation doctorale, Les fils d’Israël dans le Coran et dans la tradition musulmane des hadiths, le cheikh d’al-Azhar Muhammad Sayyid Tantawi explique d’une autre manière la transformation des juifs en singes et en porcs dans le Coran. Tantawi consacre un chapitre aux diverses façons dont Allah punit les fils d’Israël, notamment par un changement de forme. Pour expliquer le verset du Coran 5 : 60, Tantawi dit que les juifs demandèrent au prophète Mahomet en quels prophètes il croyait. Le Prophète énuméra Abraham, Ismaël, Isaac, Jacob, les tribus [sic], Moïse et Jésus, et il dit qu’il ne faisait pas de différence entre eux. À la mention de Jésus, les juifs rejetèrent sa prophétie en disant : « Nous ne croyons pas en Jésus, ni en quiconque croit en lui [c’est-à-dire Mahomet lui-même], et nous ne croyons pas que notre religion soit pire que la tienne.» Sur cette toile de fond, le Coran clarifia le mal de la religion des juifs, qu’«Allah maudit et contre lesquels il se mit en colère, et il en transforma certains en singes et en porcs» (36).

Dans son traité La Vie des animaux, le savant égyptien du XVe siècle, al-Damiri (37), mentionne une autre tradition liant l’attitude des juifs envers Jésus au châtiment qui leur fut infligé. Selon cette tradition exégétique, Jésus rencontra un groupe de juifs qui le calomnièrent, lui et sa mère, en disant «Voici le magicien, fils de la sorcière». Quand Jésus les entendit, il les maudit, et Allah les transforma en porcs (38). Al-Tabari présente aussi l’histoire coranique de la malédiction des juifs par Jésus (39) comme explication de leur châtiment consistant à être transformés en singes.

Dans son commentaire, al-Tabari fournit une autre explication de la transformation des juifs en porcs. Il décrit une femme, parmi les fils d’Israël, qui croyait en Allah et mena une guerre sainte contre le roi des fils d’Israël «pour la religion d’Allah». Elle fit trois fois la guerre, accompagnée de gens qui croyaient en elle et la suivaient, et elle fut vaincue à trois reprises. Ses hommes furent blessés et tués, mais elle réussit à s’échapper. Après la troisième tentative, elle perdit espoir et invoqua Allah : «Si cette religion avait un bouclier et un sauveur, Tu l’aurais déjà révélé.» Il est dit que la femme s’endormit toute triste et que, pendant la nuit, Allah répondit à ses appels et changea les villageois en porcs (40).

B. Le châtiment, en termes pratiques

La plupart des commentateurs prennent les écritures dans leur sens littéral et soutiennent que les juifs furent changés physiquement en singes et en porcs, comme mentionné explicitement dans le Coran. Seul un commentateur du Coran, Mujahid (41), cité par divers autres interprètes, écrivit que les juifs ne furent pas transformés physiquement, mais que le changement fut métaphorique, comme dans l’adage coranique décrivant les juifs comme «un âne portant des livres» (42) (62 : 5). Selon Mujahid, ce n’est pas leur forme extérieure qui fut changée, mais plutôt leurs cœurs [et leurs âmes, qui devinrent semblables à celles des singes]. Mais, selon les commentateurs, Mujahid est le seul à avoir cette opinion (43).

Récemment, le mensuel du Hamas, Falastin al-Muslima, a publié une série d’articles sur la façon dont Allah punit les juifs. Un chapitre était consacré au châtiment de la transformation en animaux. L’auteur de la série, Ibrahim al-‘Ali, suit l’approche de la plupart des commentateurs du Coran, et explique que le changement était vraiment physique. Il écrit : «Allah n’infligea le châtiment de la transformation qu’aux juifs. La signification du châtiment est un vrai changement dans l’image du juif, et la transformation complète de la condition humaine en une condition animale – un vrai changement de l’apparence humaine sous la forme de véritables singes, porcs, souris et lézards… La transformation fut véritable, vu qu’il n’est pas impossible que le tout-puissant Allah, qui a créé l’homme dans sa forme humaine, soit capable de changer le juif, d’humain en animal…»

Al-‘Ali cite la tradition selon laquelle la femme du Prophète, Aïcha, appela les juifs «les frères de singes et de porcs». Selon la tradition, «les juifs vinrent chez le Prophète et lui dirent ’Que le poison soit sur toi’ [ce qui, en arabe se prononce presque comme ’La paix soit sur toi’]. Le Prophète répondit : ’Que le poison soit sur vous’, et Aïcha ajouta ’Que le poison soit sur vous, frères de singes et de porcs, et que la malédiction et la colère d’Allah soient aussi sur vous’. » (44).

C. La logique qui sous-tend le châtiment

Comme le dit Ibn Kathir, commentateur du Coran, du XIVe siècle (45), tout acte a sa récompense appropriée. Il continue en expliquant pourquoi les juifs furent punis d’une transformation en singes et en porcs : les juifs conspiraient pour pêcher le samedi en préparant hameçons, filets et cannes à l’avance. Quand les bancs de poissons apparurent près de la côte, le samedi, ils furent pris par les filets, que les juifs avaient savamment conçus pour que les poissons ne puissent pas s’échapper, ce jour-là. Le soir, les juifs vinrent ramasser le poisson ; c’est alors qu’Allah les changea en singes, qui ressemblent le plus aux humains, mais ne sont pas vraiment humains. Les actes et subterfuges des juifs correspondaient extérieurement à la vérité, mais s’y opposaient dans leur essence – et leur rétribution convenait donc à leurs actions (46).

Dans un passage du mensuel du Hamas, Falastin al-Muslima, qui discute du châtiment de la transformation des juifs en animaux, le chercheur jordanien, le Dr Salah al-Khaledi, explique : «Peut-être la logique de cette transformation est-elle qu’Allah voulait qu’ils soient des humains vivant comme de véritables personnes et qu’ils réalisent leur humanité de la meilleure manière possible. Mais quand ils se révoltèrent contre les lois d’Allah, ils rejetèrent la grâce divine et abandonnèrent donc leur humanité et leur honneur pour se transformer spirituellement en animaux. Alors, Allah changea [aussi] leur forme en celle de singe, et il les transforma en animaux réels, créant ainsi une corrélation entre leur image spirituelle et physique…»

«L’adhésion à la loi divine est une des qualités dignes de l’homme, tandis que la révolte contre la loi divine est l’abolition des qualités humaines de l’homme… Aussi, un homme agressif, oppresseur et pécheur abandonne-t-il ses qualités humaines au profit de qualités bestiales [en lui], et il [devient] un animal dans son âme, dans ses émotions, et dans ses traits, même s’il est un homme dans son aspect extérieur… Les juifs, agressifs et rebelles, étaient des singes, spirituellement et émotionnellement, dans leurs âmes, dans leur comportement et dans leurs traits. Ils ne font pas partie de la race humaine [Voir, dans les Notes, en fin de document, la NDLR d’upjf.org], si ce n’est dans leur forme extérieure, dans leur corps, dans leurs sens et dans leur voix. Leur transformation en singes par Allah créa une correspondance entre ce qu’ils étaient réellement et leur aspect [extérieur].» (47).

D. Les juifs qui furent transformés eurent-ils une descendance ?

Une autre question sur laquelle se concentrèrent les commentateurs du Coran et les auteurs de la littérature en prose (Adab) est celle de savoir si les juifs qui furent changés en animaux eurent une descendance. Al-Qurtubi explique que deux approches se firent jour, à ce sujet, parmi les religieux. Selon la première, tous les singes d’aujourd’hui sont les descendants des fils d’Israël. C’était aussi l’opinion d’Ibn Qutaiba (48), savant marquant du IXe siècle et auteur d’ouvrages fameux d’Adab, qui pensait que les singes étaient, à l’origine, des juifs qui se sont reproduits (49). Selon la seconde approche, les singes qui étaient des juifs n’eurent pas de descendance.

Aussi les singes, porcs et autres animaux d’aujourd’hui, sont les descendants d’animaux qui existaient avant le châtiment divin. Ibn Abbas, par exemple, soutenait que quiconque voyait sa forme changer ne vivait pas plus de trois jours et ne mangeait, ni ne buvait, ni ne se reproduisait. Ceux qui croient que les animaux d’aujourd’hui sont les descendants des fils d’Israël basent leur croyance sur des traditions fiables du prophète Mahomet, selon lesquelles il avertit de ne pas manger certains animaux, par crainte qu’ils n’aient été, à l’origine, des fils d’Israël. Dans la tradition des compilations fiables de Muslim et d’al-Bukhari, ce qui suit est attribué au prophète Mahomet : «Un groupe des fils d’Israël – et on ne sait pas ce qu’ils firent – fut perdu, et je crains qu’ils ne soient des souris. Ne voyez-vous pas que, quand on donne aux souris du lait de chameau elles n’en boivent pas, et que quand on leur donne du lait de brebis, elles en boivent ?» Comme l’explique al-Nawawi, commentateur de hadiths du XIIIe siècle (50), « La viande et le lait de chameau sont interdits aux fils d’Israël, tandis que la viande et le lait de brebis ne le sont pas. Aussi, le fait que les souris s’abstiennent de boire du lait de chameau, mais non du lait de brebis, prouve qu’elles sont des fils d’Israël sous forme animale.»

Al-Qurtubi mentionne aussi la tradition de la compilation de Muslim, selon laquelle un lézard fut apporté au Prophète, mais qu’il refusa de le manger en disant : «Peut-être est-il des [gens] des générations dont la forme fut changée.» Dans Falastin al-Muslima, Ibrahim al-‘Ali cite aussi des traditions où le Prophète hésite à manger des lézards. Selon une des traditions, par exemple, dans la compilation des traditions acceptées comme fiables par le sage du IXe siècle, Abu Daoud (52), des gens de la suite du Prophète prirent des lézards, les rôtirent et les mangèrent. Un des lézards rôtis fut offert au Prophète, qui prit une feuille de palme et compta avec elle les doigts du lézard [qui ressemblaient à une main humaine], en disant : «Un groupe des fils d’Israël fut changé en reptiles, et je ne sais pas, peut-être que ce [lézard] fait partie de ce groupe.» Dans la tradition qui figure dans la compilation de Muslim, le Prophète était plus catégorique sur l’origine des lézards. Il est dit qu’un Bédouin supplia le Prophète de clarifier sa position sur la consommation des lézards, et le Prophète dit : «Allah était en colère contre une des tribus des fils d’Israël et il les changea en animaux rampant sur la terre. Je pense que ce sont eux [les lézards] ; je n’en mange pas et je ne l’interdis pas.»

Al-Qurtubi note que le juge andalou du XIIe siècle, Ibn al-Arabi (53), adopta le point de vue selon lequel les animaux d’aujourd’hui sont la descendance des fils d’Israël, et il mentionne une autre tradition qui étaye l’opinion d’Ibn al-Arabi. Certaines versions de la compilation des traditions par al-Bukhari citent les mots d’Amer bin Maimoun (54) : «Pendant la Jahiliya [période préislamique], je vis un singe femelle [une guenon] qui avait commis l’adultère et [les singes autour d’elle] la lapidèrent et je me joignis à eux pour la lapider aussi.» Selon l’opinion d’Ibn al-Arabi, les animaux transmirent la connaissance des lois religieuses [y compris la loi sur la lapidation des adultères] de génération en génération, jusqu’à l’époque de bin Maimoun. Il ajoute que les juifs changèrent la [loi de la] lapidation, et Allah voulut qu’ils la fassent respecter alors qu’ils étaient sous leur forme différente [c.-à-d. celle de singes] (55).

Selon certaines traditions, la crainte du Prophète que les souris, les lézards et d’autres animaux ne soient des humains transformés est expliquée par al-Qurtubi : “C’était une hypothèse suggérée par le Prophète avant qu’il ne reçoive l’inspiration divine qui lui fit comprendre clairement qu’Allah ne donna pas de descendance à ces humains transformés. Après qu’il eut reçu cette inspiration, il n’eut plus de crainte et déclara : «Allah ne peut pas avoir détruit et tourmenté des gens et en même temps leur avoir donné une descendance. Les singes et les porcs [que nous voyons aujourd’hui] existaient auparavant.»”. Selon al-Qurtubi, cette tradition est des plus fiables, et elle figure dans la compilation des traditions de Muslim. Il ajoute que la tradition de manger des lézards en présence du Prophète et à sa table, sans [avoir encouru sa] condamnation prouve qu’ils ne sont pas les descendants des fils d’Israël (56).

Comme al-Qurtubi, Ibrahim al-‘Ali préfère le point de vue selon lequel les juifs punis par la transformation en animaux n’eurent pas de descendance. Dans Falastin al-Muslima, il écrit que les juifs qui furent transformés en singes, en porcs, en lézards et en souris furent aussi punis de l’incapacité de se reproduire. «Ils existèrent dans le monde aussi longtemps qu’Allah voulut, puis il les fit s’éteindre sans descendance. Restèrent [dans le monde] les singes, les porcs et autres animaux qui avaient existé avant [le châtiment divin]… et ce sont eux qui se reproduisirent et laissèrent une descendance…»

Mais al-‘Ali continue en expliquant : «l’extinction des juifs punis par transformation ne signifie pas que leur châtiment ait pris fin. Le châtiment laissa son impression dans les âmes des juifs qui vinrent après eux : leur esprit, leurs opinions, leurs sentiments et leurs manières de penser – qui se reflètent dans le visage et dans l’apparence extérieure – [au point qu’ils en vinrent] à ressembler à leur nature et à [avoir] l’apparence de singes et de porcs, et cela affecta profondément leurs manières et leur comportement.»

Dans Falastin al-Muslima, Ibrahim al-‘Ali présente une preuve scientifique de l’affirmation que les juifs furent punis de cette façon par Allah. Il déclare que les juifs inventèrent la théorie de l’évolution pour se débarrasser de la honte de l’ancien châtiment : «…Comme les juifs éprouvaient déshonneur et honte à cause de ce châtiment particulier qui les changea en frères de singes et de porcs, ils essayèrent de se débarrasser de cette accusation, avec l’aide de la pensée satanique qui les mena à mépriser la race humaine tout entière, en disant que l’origine [de l’homme] se trouve dans des animaux, et que [l’homme] évolua, au fil du temps, de la forme de singe à la forme humaine, grâce à la théorie… du singe juif Darwin.» (57).

Conclusion

Associer les juifs avec des singes, des porcs et d’autres animaux, ce qui est très répandu dans le monde arabe et musulman parmi les chiites et les sunnites, est une pratique fermement enracinée dans les plus importantes sources religieuses islamiques, et a aussi des racines dans le folklore d’autres peuples anciens. Cette idée a été utilisée non seulement dans des écrits religieux mais aussi dans la prose et dans la fiction, tant dans le passé que dans le présent.

Dans la littérature des hadiths également, il y a une tradition qui décrit un maskh eschatologique sans mention de singes ni de porcs. La plupart des traditions qui concernent le maskh futur décrivent une triple catastrophe annonçant le jour du Jugement : la terre s’ouvrira et engloutira les pécheurs (hasf), [des rochers] seront jetés [du ciel] (qadhf), et il y aura une transformation dans une forme de vie inférieure (maskh). Parfois un tremblement de terre (rajf) est aussi mentionné dans ce contexte. Un examen du contexte historique de l’apparition de ces traditions montre qu’elles sont apparues pendant les guerres civiles entre les musulmans à l’époque omeyyade. Le grand désarroi de cette époque cultiva un sens d’apocalypse imminente, qui à son tour donna naissance à des traditions qui anticipaient la fin du monde et le jour du Jugement. Mit ihrer Beobachtung und Übersetzung arabischer Medien haben Memri und Palestinian Media Watch ein wichtiges Fenster in die Weltanschauung dieses Teils der Welt geöffnet. Der MEMRI Blog zeigt häufig politische Karikaturen wie diese. Nachdem ich genug gesehen hatte, scrollte ich nach unten, weil ich mich an die Voergehensweise des vergifteten Stiftes „gewöhnt“ hatte.

Dank Tim Marshall von Sky News werden wir aber daran erinnert, dass diese Dämonisierung etwas ist, an das wir uns nicht „gewöhnen“ sollten. Sein Weckruf wurde durch diese Karikatur in der von der PA kontrollierten Tageszeitung Al Hayat Al Jadida entfacht:

Der Kontext? Berichterstattung und Kommentar zu Hillary Clintons Kehrtwende bezüglich der israelischen Siedlungen erläutert Marshall:

[…] Dann ein weiterer Artikel. “Warum, Mrs Hillary? Wie viel Bestechungsgeld zahlten Ihnen die Zionisten?”

Aha, die Amerikaner stehen jetzt im Lohn der hinterhältigen Zionisten. Dieses Durchschalten durch die Gänge von Paranoia und Vorurteilen beschleunigt dann zurück in die 1930er-Jahre und eine Karikatur, die geradewegs aus den verseuchten Seiten der Nazi-Publikation „Der Stürmer“ gekommen sein könnte.

Uncle Sams Blick in den Spiegel zeigt einen hakennasigen orthodoxen Juden, der einen Hut mit Davidstern trägt. Was für eine scheußliche Ansammlung von Bildern, die alle in die große Lüge einmünden, dass Juden die Welt kontrollieren würden….

Wenn israelische Soldaten in Kriegszeiten kriminelle Handlungen verüben oder „Tod den Arabern“ auf Wände kritzeln, werden sie zu Recht dafür belangt, aber diese beiläufig und tagtäglich praktizierte Dämonisierung eines Volkes geht in der arabischen Welt als Normalität durch, und ohne dass die Mainstream-Medien das irgendwie kommentieren. Warum eigentlich?

[Allein meiner Harmoniesucht ist es geschuldet, dass der folgende Beitrag nicht den Titel: "Dreckschleuder in der Krise" tragen muss...]

In seiner Autobiographie zitiert Sari Nusseibeh einen israelischen Regierungsbeamten, der sich 1982 gegenüber einem Ha’aretz-Journalisten äußerte:

Die Abwendung der Palästinenser vom Terror sei eine “Katastrophe”. Israel sähe es lieber, wenn sie “zu ihren früheren Taten zurückkehren, in aller Welt Bomben legen, jede Menge Flugzeuge entführen und viele Israelis töten würden.

Vielleicht wäre in heutiger Zeit noch in den Textabschnitt einzuarbeiten: “…, sowie möglichst viele Selbstmordattentate verüben würden.” Der Pflege des Images der Palästinenser als Kollektiv antisemitischer Bluthunde hat sich Memri verschrieben. Die NZZ berichtet:

Die Israel nahestehende Organisation Memri (Middle East Media Research Institute) thematisiert auf ihrer Website die zahlreichen antijüdischen Botschaften in arabischen Fernsehkanälen. In Video-Ausschnitten kann man auch in englischen Untertiteln nachlesen, wie Irans Präsident jüngst erneut die historische Tatsache des Holocaust bestritt. Memri zeigt ferner, wie in Palästina der Fernsehkanal der Hamas, Al-Aksa-TV, versucht, die Kinder zu indoktrinieren und ihnen Selbstmordattentate schmackhaft zu machen.

In der Debatte um Muslime im Westen wird zuweilen auch auf diese Tatsache aufmerksam gemacht. Damit soll gezeigt werden, wie viel Zündstoff durch die Migration aus dem Nahen Osten in den Westen exportiert werden könnte und wie fern diese Einwanderer westlichen Werten stehen.

Doch ausgerechnet eine israelische Wissenschaftlerin, so heisst es dem Text weiter,  fällt “allen Ernstes” (J. Cohen) den umtriebigen Heinzelmännchen in den Rücken:

Yael Warshel, Professorin an der American University in Washington, wirft einen etwas anderen Blick auf diese Fakten. Nachlesen kann man ihre Analyse im Fachorgan «Arab Media and Society». Warshel analysierte während zweieinhalb Jahren den Medienkonsum von Palästinensern. Sie kommt zum Schluss, dass die Kinder die Propaganda-Sender kaum oder gar nicht nutzen. Sie bevorzugen offenbar die amerikanischen, japanischen und panarabischen Fernsehkanäle.

Zu den Lieblingssendungen zählen etwa «Conan», «Sindibad»,[sic!] «Tarzan», «Pokeman», die Musikclips des saudischen Kanals Rotana oder Mitmach-Shows im Stil von «Music-Star». Wenn die Kinder zu ihrem Fernsehkonsum befragt wurden, nannten sie nie die Angebote des Märtyrer-Fernsehens. Den grössten Anklang finden die Katz-und-Maus-Spiele der US-Zeichentrickserie «Tom und Jerry».

Ein schlimmer Schlag für israelische Propaganda. Wissenschaftlich nachzuweisen, wie es Prof’in Warshel getan hat, dass sich Palästinenser bzw. ihre Kinder in ihrem Medienverhalten nicht  wesentlich von den Konsumenten anderer national definierter Kollektive unterscheiden, ist das eine.

Dies aber auf eine im NZZ-Artikel konstatierte Medienvielfalt, die es selbst unter Palästinensern zu geben scheint, zurückzuführen, mit anderen Worten im Grunde genommen Palästinensern ähnlich menschliche Züge nachzusagen  – dies als amti-israelische Hetze und Antisemitismus der schlümmsten und pürsten Sorte zu bezeichnen, wird sich, da bin ich sicher, irgendein Edel-Fan Israels bzw. Anti-Antisemit schon bald nicht mehr entblöden. Denn, so die NZZ:

Dort, wo Medienvielfalt besteht und die Menschen wählen können, was ihnen am meisten zusagt, scheint also Propaganda wenig Durchsetzungskraft zu haben.

Die Frage ist nun, welche und wessen  Propaganda gemeint ist…

But, there is a Jewish joke that we can’t take anymore. It is the Miami Herald. Anyone who reads the real news knows that Afghanistan has all the shades of a desert Vietnam. And, smart commentators think that too. But, not the Miami Herald. They print that we’ve got to go into Pakistan. According to them there is too much to lose. Not according to me though.
The Taliban, well what they call the Taliban is basically Pashtun fighters. Plus, the actual Taliban has mostly made peace with the government of Afghanistan. The only thing leading to resistance is our presence.
They also regard the Southern Poverty Law Center as God and anyone who questions it as a bigot. One black on the paper thinks that the Nazis will be back any day. There are more hate groups because SPLC has increased the amount of things classified as hate. The SPLC has fabricated things like the claim that Latinos were experiencing more hate than anyone else, for example. And they made up Klan groups. The Miami Herald imagines that printing letters like this is allowing realistic opinion.
Here’s how the letter goes. “All Israel wants from the Palestinians is the right to exist. The Palestinians want to wipe Israel off the map. If the Middle East is gigantic how come nobody finds room for a Palestinian state there. Israel is tiny next the Arab states. They bomb Israel and then want to smile and give it away…”
Blah, blah, blah. You know how Palestinians need to recognize Israel. Never mind that the PLO acknowledged Israel and Hamas nullified the part of its charter that denied Israel’s existence. They have also published some crap from MEMRI (the middle media east research institute. Anyone who knows about MEMRI has probably figured out that it is a lying machine. In trying to prove that the Arabs are anti-semitic, they prove themselves to be anti–Arab. A few days ago a person wrote an article about how Jews have hope and fear because of Obama’s speech. To give her props she said Netanyhu’s position was indefensible. But then went on about Palestinian attacks. There haven’t been any of those in a long time. Hamas has observed the truces and obeyed them.
The most recent truce was broken by Israel. The Herald also claims that Israel was avoiding killing civilians; another lie. Everyone knows Israel’s tactic is disproportionate force. Second, the paper claims that Hamas used human shields which it didn’t. The paper spits out every Israeli lie you can think of. It is not a newspaper. It’s a jewspaper; a paper meant to bring comfort to pro-zionist Jews. This is how most newspapers are and it really ticks me off.

Yemen Accuses Tehran of Sending Yemeni Students To Train In Tehran To Join Houthis

Yemen’s ruling party has accused Iran of supporting the Houthi rebels who are battling the government forces.

It says that the Iranian cultural attache in Cairo recruits Yemeni students studying in Egypt to train in Iran prior to their joining the Houthis in Yemen.

Yemeni Interior Minister Gen. Muther Al-Masri said that there was coordination between Al-Qaeda, the Houthis, and the Southern Movement, which is seeking to declare southern Yemen an independent state.

[The southern region of Yemen, formerly the British colony of Aden, is economically and socially more advanced than the ruling northern Yemen, and they have been agitating for separation from Yemen.]

Ahwazi Organization: Iran is Planning to Attack the Gulf Countries; Iran is Producing Chemical Weapons and Burying the Waste in Ahwaz

On October 5, 2009, Alarabiya.net posted an interview with an Arab Ahwazi man who was presented as a former undercover agent for the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC). The man claimed that 40,000 well-trained operatives, mostly Shi’ites, are in the service of Iran in the ArabGulf states – 3,000 of them in Kuwait alone. He stated that the cells formed by these operatives were trained to collect intelligence, sabotage installations in the Gulf region, and assassinate senior officials. He added that Iranian Al-Qods forces commander Qassem Suleimani had prepared a plan to take over 22 embassies, both in Iran and outside it, if Iran were to be attacked.

This interview is in line with a July 14, 2009 intelligence report posted by the Ahwazi Islamic Sunni Organization on its website (www.sonnaalahwaz.org ). The organization claimed that the report was based on classified Iranian Air Force information, according to which Iran has a comprehensive military plan to attack the Gulf countries using the MiG-31 aircraft that it had purchased from Syria. Thus, it said, Iran is preparing secret airports and camps in Ahwaz province, as well as forces in the northwest of the province, in order to attack Iraq, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia.

The report also revealed a purported IRGC plan to carry out terrorist operations in the Gulf countries, and alleged that Iran was developing chemical weapons in two top-secret plants in Ahwaz province, and was burying the chemical waste products in the province. Also according to the report, Iranian special forces belonging to the IRGC and acting outside Iran have the capability and the access to carry out biological and chemical weapons attacks, and had conducted joint maneuvers with Hamas and Hizbullah as well as with Yemeni Houthi forces, and also with Iranian sleeper cells in Iraq and in the Gulf countries.

It should be noted that this organization claims to be operating with Saudi backup and support.

Following are the main points of the report: [1]

“In direct cooperation with the National Research Center in Ahwaz, and with direct support of the Saudi National Association [sic], we have succeeded in obtaining an important classified document issued by Iranian air force headquarters, signed by the commander [Gen. Hassan Shah Safi] and sent to the commander of the airbase in the city of Al-’Amidiyya, known as ‘Airbase No. 5.’ In addition, we disclosed a plan by IRGC [to attack the Gulf countries from its military bases located] near the city of Al-Hamidiyya [in western Ahwaz], which is detailed below…”

MiG-31 Warplanes Expected to Arrive at Al-’Amidiyya Airbase

According to the report of the Ahwazi Islamic Sunni Organization, on November 2, 2008, Iranian Army Air Force commander Gen. Hassan Shah Safi sent Al-’Amidiyya airbase commander Shahryar Hosseini Nejad a classified military document with instructions to prepare for the arrival of three MiG-31 warplanes. The instructions stated that all the pilots on base must prepare for special military maneuvers, and that all the information – “photos, films, and geometrical maps indicating the storage and deployment of missiles with chemical warheads – [must be forwarded to] Ali Qaramlaki, chief expert on weapon manufacture.”

The document sent by Iranian Army Air Force commander Gen. Hassan Shah Safi to Al-’Amidiyya airbase commander Shahryar Hosseini Nejad, as posted at www.sonnaalahwaz.org:

The Ahwazi organization went on to state that the Al-’Amidiyya airbase houses three F-7 jets launched from underground installations equipped with special tunnels for takeoffs and landings. It assessed that the expected arrival of the MiG-31 warplanes is proof that they were purchased by Iran from Syria approximately 18 months ago. Furthermore, the organization revealed Iran’s military plan to connect all the airbases in Ahwaz province, to set up additional bases for logistical support, and to connect the Al-’Amidiyya airbase to three islands belonging to Ahwaz province, as well as to the three islands contested by Iran and the UAE (Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb, and Abu Moussa), apparently in order to build airfields there, as part of Iran’s military plan – as is evident from satellite photographs taken by the UAE.

Iran Is Developing Chemical Weapons in Ahwaz

The Islamic Ahwazi Sunni Organization’s report stated: “In the past, numerous reports by [various] elements claimed that, in addition to nuclear weapons, Iran has a program to develop chemical weapons inside Iran,” in violation of the Treaty for the Prevention of the Proliferation of Nuclear and Chemical Weapons [sic, probably NPT and CWC]. Furthermore, “after the April 15, 2005 intifada [the Ahwazi rebellion against the Iranian regime], it was repeatedly reported that chemicals were conveyed to southern Ahwaz for unknown reasons. However, it has now been discovered that Iran is developing chemical weapons and that the transporting [of chemicals] to Ahwaz four years ago was for the purposes of burying the waste from their manufacture.”

The organization stated that in Iran, there are two plants for the production of chemical weapons: the Aghajeri chemical plant, situated between Al-’Amidiyya and Behbahan, and the Shaznad plant, situated next to the Arak factories in northern Ahwaz. It also said that, according to Western reports issued several months ago, Iran transferred its first sea transport of chemicals as part of its missile program, including missiles installed on warplanes, which Iran is now trying to adapt for carrying chemical warheads. The organization further claimed that Iran is trying to obtain sulfur for military use.

The Al-Hamidiyya Plan: Attacking Targets in the Gulf States

The Ahwazi organization also reported that the IRGC had established, in the western Ahwaz city of Al-Hamidyyia, four camouflaged military bases spaced some two kilometers apart. It said, citing an IRGC source nicknamed “Al-Dalil Al-Amel,” that the bases’ access roads were secret and difficult to negotiate, and that only IRGC personnel were permitted to use them. Likewise, said the report, the area is surrounded with observation posts and night-vision surveillance cameras, and training sheds are scattered throughout. It said that these bases were set up for training local elements from the Persian Gulf as well as special forces, which would in future operate in their respective countries – Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the UAE, and Bahrain.

According to the report, these forces had been trained to carry out operations in the Gulf countries, particularly Saudi Arabia and Kuwait – operations that would be rapid and unpredictable, would cause great damage, and would not arouse any suspicion of Iranian involvement. The organization said that the headquarters of these bases were situated entirely in the Gulf region; that they had maps of and information about the targets in this region; and that these headquarters had confirmed that 12 cells had already been trained and had begun to carry out operations for Iran: smuggling large quantities of weapons, ammunition, explosives, and drugs into Iraq and from there to Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, and storing smuggled weapons in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait so that no Iranian connection could be discerned.

The organization said that the bases’ supreme leadership belonged to the IRGC, but were actually led by Hizbullah, and that their training methods were identical to the defense and warfare methods used by Hizbullah. It said that this was because of a decision by Iran to establish fighting groups like Hizbullah that were, like Hizbullah, capable of waging internal war in the cities and streets in time of war.

According to the report, the four bases in Al-Hamidiyya are:

1) A base in the south of the city, for logistical support, with civil and military services such as garages for repairing military vehicles, a hospital with a full medical staff, and mobile hospitals for time of need.

2) South of the above base is a base belonging to it, with fortified storehouses of weapons, equipment and fuel; it is heavily guarded by IRGC special forces.

3) A base north of the city, also for providing logistical support; in 2003, a military airport was set up in it, for use by aircraft for attacking specific targets in the Gulf, Kuwait, southern Iraq, eastern Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain.

4) A base with hidden warplanes and missiles equipped with warheads banned by international treaties, as well as surface-to-surface missiles.

The Iranian Special Forces

The Ahwazi Islamic Sunni Organization notes in its report that Iranian special forces are responsible for training birun marzi (“outside the country”) forces operating outside Iran, such as Hizbullah, Hamas, and Houthi (Yemen) forces, as well as sleeper cells in the Gulf and Arab countries. It says that these forces can provide their operatives with diplomatic passports, and possess advanced weaponry and the latest vehicles. Their operatives speak several languages, including fluent Lebanese Arabic, and are responsible for assassinating senior officials. The organization adds that these forces have the capability to carry out operations using biological or chemical weapons, and that they have a direct line to the IRGC leadership and coordinate with Iranian intelligence apparatuses. These forces, it says, have received and deployed dozens of platforms for launchers equipped with Fajr-2 and Shihab-2 missiles that can reach southern Iraq, Kuwait, and eastern Saudi Arabia, and that they can strike specific targets.

The organization also says that in October 2008, three military maneuvers were held that included all aerial and land forces in the four bases at Al-Hamidiyya with the participation of Arab army personnel under IRGC command – including Hamas, Hizbullah, and special Iranian forces, and several groups of independent Iranian sleeper cells in Iraq and in several regions of the Gulf. According to the report, these maneuvers included a presentation of all plans concerning attacks on targets in the Gulf, including American targets, immediately upon receiving orders from the IRGC leadership. It also said that the readiness of the forces, missiles, and aircraft that would participate in the attack had already been ascertained.

Discovery of Chinese Radar Systems at Al-Hamidiyya

The organization claimed that six months ago, the IRGC had obtained a sophisticated Chinese radar system (originally called Rakib) and had installed it at the Al-Hamidiyya bases, and that its radar covered most of the western and southern areas of Ahwaz. It said that the system was explosion-proof and could identify stationary and moving objects such as aircraft, ships, and armed forces encircling the region. It could also disrupt enemy communications and withstand enemy attempts to disrupt communications during military activity. The organization said that the Al-Hamidiyya military bases had massive defenses, including antiaircraft missiles, and that in addition to its ground defenses, there are closely-spaced air defense forces, armed with Mithak-2 shoulder-fired missiles.

In conclusion, the organization states:

“The dangerous armament programs now being prepared and implemented in Ahwaz [province] attest to the beginning of impending conflict, in which Al-Ahwaz will serve as a base and starting point for attacking our brothers across the Arab homeland, and in particular in the Arab Gulf. Accordingly, the Ahwazi Islamic Sunni Organization [appeals to] the Saudi National Association [for Human Rights] with the following demands:

“1) To [lobby for] international intervention to inspect the Al-’Amidiyya base, the Arajeri plant situated between Al-’Amidiyya and Behbahan, and the Shaznad plant in northern Ahwaz.

“2) To take steps to dismantle chemical weapons that Iran is producing in Ahwaz, because those harmed first by this are the Ahwazi people and the land of Ahwaz, and after that the Gulf countries and the Arab Gulf.

“3) To take serious steps to condemn Iran and to prosecute it for violating international law concerning the ban on the use of chemical weapons.

“4) To take steps to dismantle Iran’s weapons throughout Ahwazi territory.

“5) To protect the Ahwazi Arab people from the consequences of [the military nature of life] in Al-Ahwaz.”

Ayatollah Jannati meinte in seiner „Predigt“ gestern, die Al-Quds-Rally sei ein Beweis dafür gewesen, dass die Welt Israel hasse. Im übrigen kann ich das Wort „Predigt“ in diesem Zusammenhang nicht mehr lesen – da wird mir schlecht.

Ayatollah Jannati In Iran Friday Sermon: Qods Day Rallies Message To U.S., Israel: The World Hates You

In his Friday sermon today, Tehran Friday Prayers leader Iranian Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati pointed out that the Last Messenger and 12 Shiite Imams had opposed oppression, and that the International Qods (Jerusalem) Day rallies indicated a global conscience against oppression.

“A Qods Day rally is different from other rallies, such as the 22nd of Bahaman rally (marking the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran), because it is international, while other rallies have their roots in religion and nationalism,” Ayatollah Jannati said.

Tehran Friday prayers leader praised this year’s Qods Day rally and said people from other faiths other than Islam participated the rallies as well.

Ayatollah Jannati added, “This year, the Qods Day rallies were more glorious than ever. It has a message for Israel and the U.S. – and that message is ‘The world hates them’” Ayatollah Jannati added.

Ayatollah Jannati pointed out that the Last Messenger and 12 Shi’iteImams had been against oppression, and that the international Qods Day rallies pointed to a global conscience against oppression.

“The U.S. and Israel are the manifestations of oppression in the world. If there were no Qods Day rallies, Israel would feel better and the Palestinians worse than they do today,” Ayatollah Jannati said.

“The facts show that Israel and its army are trafficking in the organs of Palestinians. There are documents to this effect. Why is Europe trying to stop this [from being exposed]?

“Why must the Palestinian people pay the price under occupation? Why must it be tortured and the organs of its martyred sons used for trafficking? This is the result of the [moral] bankruptcy of the U.S. and Europe and the cover they provide [Israel]. These countries must rise to their responsibility, if they are interested in making peace and reaching a settlement in the region.”

The name of this statesman? Omar al-Ghoul. I wonder if his official portrait was done by Richard Upton Pickman?

BACKGROUND: The organ-harvesting story started in a Swedish newspaper, Aftonbladet, the editor of which later admitted he had no evidence. He should work for the New York Times.

2. “Our children are coming back in body bags. Our nation is bankrupt over these wars. And if you open your mouth, you get targeted. And if they don’t beat you at the poll, they’ll put you in prison.”

Via MEMRI, an interview with Yousuf Al-Ahmad, Professor of Islamic Law at Al-Imam University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Saudis who own TV stations -including al-Arabiya- should face trial in an Islamic court and execution for spreading immorality and disorder in the land. Remember, this man is an acknowledged expert in Islamic Law and, in his opinion, these station owners pose a worse threat than the Jews:

Sheikh Yousuf Al-Ahmad: [...] “I believe that one of our problems is that we continue to bury our heads in the sand, and talk about ‘Lebanese’ TV channels, as if we are being honest. Take LBC, for example. We all know who owns it. We should say to [the owner] Al-Walid bin Talal: Beware. The same is true of MBC TV, Al-Arabiya TV, the ART and Rotana channels – all these [Saudi] channels serve to destroy Islam and the Muslims.

“Regarding these base channels that I have mentioned, and others like them – I have no doubt whatsoever that their danger to the Islamic nation is no less than that of the Zionist Jews, or of the Crusader Americans in Iraq and elsewhere.”

Interviewer: “What led you to such an extremist view? Note that you are equating channels owned by Muslims, by Saudi citizens, with the Jews.”

Sheikh Yousuf Al-Ahmad: “I wasn’t equating them. I said they are more dangerous. I was being precise. In my view, the deadly poison that they are spreading has reached the bone marrow.

[...]

“The people who spread corruption in the land – whether highway robbers, drug dealers, or the owners of these TV channels, who are even more dangerous… These channels broadcast corruption and nudity. They are all people who spread corruption in the land, and they should be tried in an Islamic court of law and sentenced to death. This [fatwa] is clearly in accordance with Islamic law. There’s no doubt about it.”

The esteemed sheikh goes on to explain how killing the station owners is in accord with Islam and Allah’s will, and he scoffs with contempt at the idea that Islam is a religion of “tolerance and leniency.” Bear that in mind the next time an apologist for Islam tries to tell you that it is a religion of peace and tolerance, or that it’s compatible with democracy and the principles that underlie it. (It isn’t, not if one is to practice it as Muhammad intended.)

The “reformist” site Norooz News is reporting that President Ahmadinejad and his supporters tabled a proposal for the arrest of Mir Hossein Mousavi and “10 other leaders of the reform movement”, including some unspecified members of the reformist association Rowhaniooon Mobarez, at the National Security Council. The plan was pushed through, despite opposition within the Council, but then shelved by the “highest authorities of state” (a likely reference to the Supreme Leader) as this could lead to the “collapse of the political system”.
