Si “Taxi Driver” fuese una comedia, quizás sería “Edmond”. En apariencia, las dos pelis van de lo mismo: del afán de sexo/comunicación de un hombre bueno perdido en la jungla urbana. Pero Stuart Gordon no es Scorsese, sino el director de “Re-Animator”. Así que este drama realista es también relato de terror. El terror del cuarentón confuso en su decadencia; el de quien confunde el subidón de adrenalina de la violencia/sexo con la revelación de su destino. Esto pasa mucho. A William H. Macy, en esta peli, tras acuchillar a un negrata y echarle un kiki a una camarera cariñosa. Hay que tener el talento de David Mamet para reproducir en la ficción la palabrería metafísica del hombre corriente, ésa que todos hemos practicado: para poner verosímilmente en boca de un necio los interrogantes manoseados sobre el sentido de la vida. Macy está genial en su perplejidad. Quería cambiar su vida, y lo consigue. Vaya que sí. Al final de la peli, se cuestiona sobre el infierno y besa a su amante, antes de acostarse a su lado, sin comprender que vivir es lo que ocurre, no lo que se medita.

VERDICT:
10/10 Awesome Dads

One hell of a debut effort by director Sam Mendes and screenwriter Alan Ball. Also happens to be my good buddy Fred’s favorite movie of all time.

Good choice, Fred.

American Beauty is about Lester Burnham, a guy going through a mid-life crisis thanks to the “good job” he hates, the “good marriage” that failed a long time ago, the estranged relationship he has with his daughter that he sees every day but hardly even knows, and the facade of a “good life” he grudgingly maintains in suburban America for the sake of everyone but himself. Then one day he meets his next-door neighbor – a dope-dealing classmate of his daughter – who teaches Lester by example that life is too short to just sit back and accept the way things are. Lester listens, Lester abides, and so begins the story of the most entertaining and profound mid-life crisis I’ve ever seen put to film.

While I’m on the subject, I’m just gonna go ahead and get my Lester Burnham/Kevin Spacey rant out of the way, mainly because he’s a big reason this movie got a 10.

Alright, here it goes…

Lester Burnham is the man. Arguably one of the top three movie protagonists…ever. Part of that is because he’s played by Kevin Spacey, who also happens to be the man and one of the best working actors out there today (now if only he’d take better roles). It helps that Burnham’s such a well-written character to begin with, but it’s not often in movies that you see an actor really become the character he’s playing. The reason the change from Lester the Buzzkill to Lester the Hero is so effective is because Spacey is just so damn believable and invested as he sticks up a big ol’ middle finger to the life he can’t stand and punches it square in the kisser as he passes it by with an ear-to-ear grin on his face.

It’s an amazing display of character development, it’s an amazing display of life in general.

But everyone else is  great, too. Annette Bening is fantastic as Lester’s wife, Carolyn, the one person in the family who seems to relish in their superficial existence and has no idea how to cope with her husband’s sudden disdain for it. She’s a great counterpoint to Lester’s whole mindset and Bening does a great job of making her feel both trapped and

Thora Birch (where’d she go?) is good as Lester’s daughter, Jane. Mena Suvari (probably hiding out with Thora) is good as Jane’s best friend/Lester’s lust interest. I thought Wes Bentley (who has since taken up a campaign to destroy his own career from the inside out with big roles in Ghost Rider and P2) was really good as the terribly odd, yet terribly fascinating Ricky Fitts, Jane’s main squeeze and Lester’s weed pusher/personal idol next door. And Chris Cooper and Allison Janney are also awesome in their own disturbing ways as Ricky’s parents.

Probably could have just left that at “everyone else is great, too,” but hey, good casts like this deserve their props.

And like I said, what an amazing script by Alan Ball. Sam Mendes might be the reason this movie looks so damn good, but the brilliant characters, the wonderful dialogue, and the way this thing goes from great scene to great scene to great scene goes right back to Ball. We’ve all got our favorite moments, and that’s ’cause there’s a lot of ‘em here.

Just so many great scenes here thanks to a perfect little partnership between Mendes and Ball. Those guys should really get back together.

What more can I say about American Beauty. Best movie of 2000, deserved the freakin’ slew of awards it got that year, and it’s the best thing Sam Mendes has done for the world. Still the most insightful and eye-opening behind-closed-doors look into suburban life, and I’ll be damned if that statement ever changes.

…And the scene where Lester goes off on Carolyn after she stops his advances because he’s about to spill beer on their couch – one of my favorite scenes of all time.

“This isn’t life, it’s just stuff! And it’s become more important to you than living. Well, honey, that’s just nuts.”

Fuckin’-A, Lester. Fuckin’-A.

Mena Suvari suddenly realizes the best part of her career may be behind her.

We love the catharsis of a good horror movie because it allows us to exorcise our inner demons safely. The reason we have inner demons, however, is because real life can be far more horrific than any movie.

Brandi Boski (Suvari) is a sweet-natured nursing assistant at a care facility for the elderly. She is so compassionate that the sometimes hostile residents, particularly the increasingly demented Mr. Binckley (Robson) want her to tend to them exclusively. That hasn’t escaped the notice of the shrewish facility director Ms. Peterson (Purdy-Gordon), who tells Brandi she is up for a promotion.

On the other end of the spectrum is Thomas Bardo (Rea), a man who is hitting bottom. Laid off from his job as a project manager, he has been unable to find work and is being evicted from his apartment. He is trying to get unemployment benefits at a faceless agency but his application has been lost. Rather than trying to help, the faceless drones force the penniless Bardo to pay for their mistake by filling out the forms all over again and waiting for yet another appointment. With the kind of long-suffering sigh that actor Rea is a master at, he walks off to the local park to find a bench to sleep on, although even that is denied him by a pitiless cop who orders him to hoof it to the mission across town – on incongruously named Hope Street.

Meanwhile, Brandi has been partying with a Tanya (Bernard), a sympathetic co-worker who has been the target of Ms. Peterson’s wrath and her drug-dealing boyfriend Rashid (Hornsby) who has been plying both women with alcohol and X. Even though she’s reeeeeally intoxicated, Brandi elects to drive home – after all, she has to work the next day.

As Bardo trudges towards Hope Street pushing a shopping cart left by a sympathetic homeless man named Sam (Smith) that carries his few belongings, Brandi is on her cell phone calling her boyfriend…you know, the one she just left at the bar. You know the two are going to meet and when they do, it will be with a bang. The distracted, inebriated Brandi hits Bardo head on and he plunges through the windshield.

As you might guess from a white girl wearing cornrows, she panics and after getting spooked trying to drop off her unwanted passenger – who is still alive, miraculously – at the hospital, drives home and parks her bloody car in the garage. When her boyfriend arrives, she chooses not to tell him more than that she’d been in an accident and spends the night having sex with him over a loud rap soundtrack.

As the next day arrives Brandi thinks that by letting Bardo expire naturally, she can then convince her boyfriend to get rid of the body after dark but since Bardo stubbornly refuses to die, she must consider other options, some far more dark than the one she’s already chosen.

This is based on an actual incident, in which a Texas woman named Chante Jawan Mallard struck a homeless man with her car and drove him to her garage and left him to die, although coroners would later say that he could have been saved had she just called for help. Her victim actually died within an hour or two of the impact, while Bardo survives for a great deal longer despite horrific injuries.

Director Gordon is responsible for some excellent cult movies dating back to the 1980s. Stylistically, he is known for a very dark sense of humor – think of the term “black comedy” and multiply it times a thousand here. For example, while Bardo suffers in agony in the garage, a local dog finds its way in and decides to chow down on a bone – one of Bardo’s, sticking out from his leg. It’s the kind of thing you laugh at then wince at then wonder how sick you are to have found it funny.

Suvari, who has come a long way from the American Pie movies, does a reasonable job in Stuck. She plays a character that has a veneer of compassion but it deserts her when her comfort is threatened. She’s not evil per se, but self-centered to the point of psychosis. I thought the movie would have worked a little bit better if Brandi had been a little more likable, but perhaps it might not have been possible to paint the character that way without making her actions completely unbelievable so I guess it will have to do. As it stands other than Bardo and Sam, nearly everyone in the movie is completely self-absorbed.

Rea, so good in movies like The Crying Game and V for Vendetta has the hangdog look that befits the character. Given the fact that he spends most of the movie impaled on the windscreen with little to do but moan and rage at the heavens, he makes this movie work. While he isn’t like a Michael Myers or Jason Voorhees, he does take a licking and keep on ticking leading to a conclusion that is extraordinarily bloody but nonetheless satisfying.

This is not a laugh out loud funny joke-fest but it could be classified as a comedy. It doesn’t keep you on the edge of your seat but it could be counted as a thriller. There are no major scares but it certainly might be found in the horror section of your home video emporium. The fact is, it fulfills the criteria for each genre quite nicely and manages to be quite a good little movie that escaped under the radar. It is certainly worth a rental.

WHY RENT THIS: Gordon is a splendid director who knows a thing or two about ratcheting up the tension level. A not so thinly veiled commentary on the state of the American people – self-absorbed to the point of psychosis.

WHY RENT SOMETHING ELSE: Suvari’s character is so loathsome that it is difficult for the audience to get behind her, which might have elevated the film a bit had we been able to.

FAMILY VALUES: There is a good deal of violence, some fairly horrific, much nudity and sex and some drug usage. As you can see, not terribly appropriate for the kiddies.

TRIVIAL PURSUIT: Director Gordon appears in a cameo as a resident carrying a bag of groceries who gets yelled at by Rashid’s girlfriend.

NOTABLE DVD EXTRAS: On the Blu-Ray edition, there’s a feature that touches somewhat in-depth on the incident that inspired the movie. Note that on the DVD edition, there are no extras whatsoever, not even a commentary track.

FINAL RATING: 7/10

Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs e G-Star mostram suas novas coleções com muito burburinho e  presenças ilustres

O mundo fashion não para. E cada vez mais estrelado, levou aos últimos desfiles estrelas e celebridades para prestigiarem as novas coleções das grifes Calvin Klein, G-Star e Marc Jacobs.

O último, que foi um dos mais disputados da Semana de Moda de Nova York, recebeu na primeira primeira fila a rainha do pop Madonna e polêmica Lady Gaga, que apareceu de máscara e mechas cor-de-rosa nos cabelos, além de Cecília Dean, Aléxis Bryan, Hilary Alexander. Na passarela, o estilista trouxe uma coleção inspirada no ballet, mesclando cores e sua referência punk.

Já a Calvin Klein investiu em uma coleção desenvolvida pelo brasileiro Francisco Costa. Cheia de volumes, as peças foram inspiradas na arte de Ferne Jacobs, artista californiana que trabalha com trançados manuais, técnica antiga usada na fabricação de cestas.

O estilista deixou um pouco seu tom arquitetônico de lado para mergulhar na leveza dos tecidos e na naturalidade das formas. A cartela de cores mostrou tons minimalistas, como branco, preto, grafite, nude e tons claros de amarelo, rosa e azul bebê. Além da musa da marca Eva Mendes, o desfile contou com uma primeira fila recheada de rostinhos conhecidos do mundo fashion, como Thandie Newton, Karolina Korkova, a brasileira Alice Braga e as grandes editoras Anna Winrour da Vogue América e Carine Roitfeld da Vogue francesa.

Por fim, a G-Star, que tem como fãs incondicionais Lindsay Lohan, Juliette Lewis, Mena Suvari e a tatuadora Kat Von D apresentou uma coleção de  jeanswear levinhos para o verão, com shortinhos, jaquetas de manga curta e calças com corte saruel. A novidade é que a grife  queridinha das celebrities está prestes a chegar no Brasil, com data para sua estreia marcada para o ano que vem, pelas mãos do empresário Alexandre Brett.

Hello-Hello and welcome to a Wednesday!

Today we share lots of little tidbit and pictures, many of them from the doings at New York Fashion Week.  First, the Ann Taylor presentation, the first time Annie T has done a show at Fashion Week.

The review in Women’s Wear Daily referenced the company’s ‘new direction’:

“… the affordable, working girl’s retailer is serious about its new attitude and willing to put its money where its mouth is.”

The palette was neutral, with none of the bright colors we adore.  Many of the pieces in the presentation are available now, a huge distinction from other firms showing in New York last week.

Those items not already in stores are scheduled to drop before the holidaze holidays.  Back to the presentation, WWD wrote about the notables in attendance:

“… so a gaggle of Ann Taylor-clad celebrities were wrangled to sit front row. Jennifer Esposito, Vanessa Williams, Mena Suvari, Gretchen Mol, Kelly Rutherford, Kelly Bensimon, Laila Ali, Katherine McPhee and Amanda Bynes came prepped with pro-Ann spiels, some which actually sounded sincere…”

The WSJ’s Heard on the Runway blog has more on what is driving the changes at the company:

“…Ann Taylor made a name for itself on women’s busines suits that were popular more than a decade ago. But it failed to evolve beyond those pieces,  slipping into a staid and dowdy style.”

We’re not convinced it has all been frumpish, but there is definitely an issue with the merchandise mix in recent years. We would contend that for those needing proper apparel in the workplace the company managed to keep some basics in the stores, pieces one could build a look around. Back to the show:

Additional thoughts from Heard on the Runway:

“Ann Taylor stepped up its styling game for Thursday evening to give its pieces more of a high-fashion aesthetic. The brand added feathers and pom poms to its so-called ”power sandal.” The overall presentation was at once edgy and sophisticated, prompting a collective “That’s Ann Taylor?” among audience members.”

The next pieces are a bit more formal, possibly the perfect look for upcoming parties and celebrations:

Overall the styles had a more contemporary look, we hope the company is able to rebound and capture the younger shoppers it desperately needs.

On the retail front we have word that Vera Bradley plans to open three more stores this year, in addition to last week’s Cincinnati opening. The new shops are slated for Palm Beach, opening Nov. 13 at the Gardens, and Tysons Corner, scheduled to open Oct. 16.

One last note, this one on Burberry: it would seem we are requested to cease calling it Burberry Plaid, instead referring to it as Burberry Check.  That suggestion comes from none other the label’s Creative Director an Christopher Bailey, in a recent profile in the New Yorker.

“And he hates when Burberry’s signature print is referred to as plaid: ”People keep saying to me it’s a plaid, and I’m like, ‘No, it’s a check!’”

Indeed.

Muita gente gosta de se inspirar nas famosas para compor o visual. Legal ou não, afinal de contas, não é porque é conhecida que quer dizer que se veste bem. Procuramos algumas celebridades em suas roupitchas de praia, vejam e tomem suas próprias conclusões.

O preto é uma cor muito popular até para os biquínis. Fica legal em quase qualquer cor de pele e nos permite brincar bastante com a saída de banho. Repare que embora a parte do bumbum dos biquínis de lá sejam grandes, quando visto de frente, parece muito com os nossos modelos. Tem até o sutiã de cortininha e a parte de baixo de amarrar – que é legal por não valorizar muito nossas gordurinhas que muitas tem do lado nos quadris, porque dá para ajustar, sem ficar parecendo um colchão amarrado encima do bagageiro da Kombi. Os biquínis mais cavados e de laterais finas, como o de Kelly Ripa podem dar a impressão que sua perna é mais longa.

Esses modelos, com alças do sutiã um pouco mais largas e com a frente única, ficam legais em mulheres com muito busto. Se tiver um bojinho pode ser mais confortável, porque vai ajudar a sustentar seus seios. No caso, deve-se evitar enfeites e estampas, que vão fazer seus seios explodirem de tão enormes que ficarão. Cuidado!

O branco fica ótimo em quem já esta um pouco bronzeada. É ideal para fazer um tipo na areia ou na beira da piscina, não recomendamos propriamente tomar um banho de mar, simplesmente porque pode ficar transparente, se não tiver um bom forro. E as vezes o forro pode ser bege, e quem te olhar, vai achar que está da mesma forma transparente.

Os biquínis das três garotas ilustres acima são um pouquinho maiores. O meu preferido é o de Kelly Carlson, achei até chic, adoro esse tipo de sutiã porque tenho pouco busto, cria um formato interessante. Calcinhas como a de Britney Spears ficam legais em quem tem pernas longas.

Continua aquela tendência de usar a calcinha diferente do sutiã. O que todo indica, pelas fotos, essa mania já faz a cabeça das famosas. Esse sutiã de Miley Cyrus apareceu em vários desfiles, com as alças um pouco mais largas. É uma boa opção para as mulheres com peitos grandes, porque não mais sustentação e, por tem as alças largas, não dão a impressão que seu busto é ainda maior.

Aqui no Brasil as mulheres também gostam de misturar os biquínis. Particularmente não curto, mas a mania está nas praias mais badaladas e nos corpos mais cobiçados do país… O modelo de Danielle Winits é interessante para as meninas que tem pouca cintura. O efeito do amarrado nas laterias, junto com o sutiã de alças finas que aumentam o seu busto, dá a sensação que você tem um pouco mais de cintura. Se esse for o seu caso, experimente. O mesmo vale para as meninas de quadris estreitos, só que dêem preferência as cores claras na parte debaixo, que aumentam ainda mais.

Nos corpos magros como de Cíntia Dicker e Carolina Bittencourt tudo fica bem. Elas estão lindas e estão com as pernas absurdamente longas. Aqui fica uma comparação interessante, Aline Moraes, que já foi modelo e não é mais, esta muito mais cheinha, não estou falando que esta gorda, que as ex-colegas de profissão.

A combinação de sutiã de cortininha mais calcinha de amarrar ainda é extremamente popular, principalmente por aquelas que amam tomar um solzinho. O modelo é o queridinho tanto nas celebridades de lá, como nas de cá.

Na verdade, esse modelo fica mais bonito, como quase tudo nessa vida, em quem tem corpo em cima e peitos pequenos, se não, fica muito vulgar com aquele monte de carne sobrando.

Gosto muito desses tops que são franzidos no meio, para mim que tenho pouco busto, me dá algo que não possuo: volume! Para quem tem muito peito é quase um crime! Os modelos com bojo em formato de concha ainda achatam os seios e te deixa com um busto feio. Proibido para as peitudas.

E babados? Aqui no Brasil isso não pega muito bem não. Porém o modelo é legal também para as meninas despeitadas, porque dá volumes aos seios.

Para finalizar o post vamos a um modelo que achei absurdamente ousado. Lindsay Lohan com esse biquíni com aquela tendência de um modelo maior, ele lembra aqueles vestidinhos bondage, não é?

alice + olivia chose to have a line presentation and performance by girl band Plasticines in a warehouse in the Meatpacking district instead of shelling out tons of cash to be in the tents. The vibe was great and the music blasted through the open doors into the streets. The clothing was nicely grouped into little “rooms” to the left side of the massive space. Props were french inspired line drawings on plywood staged around and with the models. The models moved around and bounced to the music and seemed to have more fun than most runway shows we’ve been to. It was easy to view the collection this way, though we would have like to see the backs of more of the pieces. Our favorites were the soft dresses and textural numbers. 

We love that brands like alice + olivia continue to collaborate with companies such as Payless to keep some of their product easily accessible to the masses and expand their brands. Though we have noticed that the quality of the samples that models wear and the quality that ends up in stores aren’t always the same, we’ll take it for under 40 bucks.
