Since one of the topics of this blog is nostalgia and I’ve been reading comics since the late Seventies, when Heidi asked me to contribute I thought I could combine the two by writing about some classic (or not-so-classic) comics from back then.   The Seventies were an interesting time for comics; the restrictions of the Comics Code were starting to loosen and socially-conscious stories were becoming more prevalent.  But the Seventies are usually looked back on as a dark time for comics, full of heavy-handed writing, silly characters (the Hypno-Hustler, Razorback, Brother Power, Prez…do I need to go on?), and covers riddled with word balloons.  All these things are true, but looking back now, we can appreciate some of the stories FOR their silliness and unrealistic plots…kind of like how “Plan 9 From Outer Space” is now considered a “classic” movie.  Well, a lot of Seventies comics could be considered classics too, for sheer wackiness…maybe none moreso than the one I’m reviewing here, Marvel Super Special #1 starring KISS.

Yes, this is the infamous comic that had the bandmembers’ blood mixed in with the red ink before printing.  I was 5 years old when this came out and I still remember what a big stir it caused…Holy crap, there’s actual blood mixed in with the ink!  Of course, with the hype surrounding it at the time, people expected the comic to come off the shelf dripping blood all over the place; it’s a little disappointing to find out there was just a vial of blood from each bandmember and it was pretty diluted.  Oh well.  I never actually got a copy of this comic back then, so I’ve often wondered what the story was like sans the hype.  Well, I managed to find a copy (digital unfortunately, so no blood-stained hands) and read it.  Now I’ll share my thoughts on it.  There are SPOILERS AHEAD, so read at your own risk.

It starts with a few text pages talking about how the comic came about and giving a biography of Dr. Doom, who is the big bad villain of the story.  When the actual story starts, we see Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley walking down a street in Manhattan, talking about “the Man” and “toeing the line” and all those great clches about growing up.  Obviously, this story was aimed at young people, (KISS’s main audience) who always seem to  feel oppressed.  Not that the points they make about conformity and acceptance and such are wrong…but they aren’t exactly subtle.  It seems to be implied here that Paul and Gene are quite young, maybe still teenagers, but it’s explicitly stated that the setting is 1977, so the band would all be in their mid-twenties or older.  Again, probably done to appeal to the disaffected youth.

Anyway, Paul and Gene come across some freaky-looking dude (Dizzy the Hun) getting mugged by a gang of bad guys.  Dizzy (who talks like someone from the Middle Ages) throws them a box and tells them it’s their destiny.  Of course the bad guys start chasing Gene and Paul, who run to the arcade (that’s a PINBALL arcade for all you young people) where their friends Ace Frehley and Peter Criss are hanging out.  Ace’s characterization is especially interesting, since he talks like a college professor and calls everyone “Curly”.  I’m not sure how true-to-life that was back then, but I’ve read more recent interviews with Ace and he sure didn’t sound like that.  Maybe all the booze and stuff took its toll on his vocabulary.  Gene and Paul toss the box to Ace and Peter and hide in a photo booth.  But since Ace and Peter don’t know about the bad guys looking for the box, they stand there looking at it until they’re spotted.  They duck into the photo booth too, where they’re all cornered.  Ace opens the box and they find four talismans (three of which look suspiciously like KISS dolls.)  Just as the baddies are about to rush the photo booth, there is a flash of fire and they are confronted by…(you guessed it)…KISS!  Apparently the mystic talismans transformed the guys into a bad-ass band complete with face paint and leather.

The box also gave them superpowers, which they use to kick the crap out of the bad guys.  Peter has the agility of a cat, Paul can shoot an energy beam from his eye which controls people’s emotions, Gene breathes fire (of course) and Ace has a teleportation ability which is activated when he sticks out his thumb like a hitchhiker.  (For some reason, I find that last detail so cool…there are lots of people who can teleport, but only one who does it by “thumbing”!)  Anyway, they teleport away and are soon confronted by a bunch of hot gypsy women and their evil master…Dr. Doom!  He explains that the box is called the Box of  Khyscz (pronounced “kiss”…you see where this is going?)  They use their new powers to fight him and the gypsy girls (who turn out to be robots,much to Gene’s disappointment), but Doom escapes.  Ace uses his “magic thumb” to follow, but goes a liitle too far and they end up in some weird spaced-out dimension.

Back on Earth, it’s time for the superhero cameos: Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, the Avengers and the Defenders all make appearances.  (And Daredevil, who’s with the Defenders for some reason…I’m not sure why.)  Then there’s an interlude in the middle of the comic which includes an interview with the band, photos of their blood being taken and a really cool fake tourist ad for Latveria, Dr. Doom’s home country (The ad is for Air Latveria, who offer flights TO Latveria but none coming back…their slogan is: “We get you there…getting back is up to you!”)  After all that we get back to the story.  Gene and Paul are taken to “heaven” which turns out to be hell in disguise.  They fight Mephisto the demon and escape.  Meanwhile, Ace and Peter are in an interstellar disco where they meet a cat-lady and fight off some ruffians (no, seriously).  All of them wind up back on Earth, fight more of Doom’s robots, then are whisked off to an asteroid to confront Doom himself.  It isn’t much of a fight, and they win by appealing to Doom to remember his lost youth, which he’s tried to forget for so long.  It’s corny, but it works…he lets them go and they end up back in New York.  They’re now back to their normal selves and have to return the talismans to the box, but Dizzy (who started all this, remember?) says that the box of Khyscz will “make you kings of the nighttime world, but you must live the days…with the same courage to explore.”  So I guess this is the “secret origin” of the band, since they take the name of the box as their new identity (it’s pronounced “Kiss”, remember?).

So, is this comic worth reading?  Well, it’s not exactly great literature (and don’t get me wrong, I believe comics ARE literature), but then it probably wasn’t intended to be.  It was meant to be fun and despite all the weirdness (or maybe because of it) it is a fun read.  There are some good points at the beginning and again at the end about having the guts to go for your dreams and not falling into conformity just because it’s expected of you.  But don’t worry, it’s not a preachy comic; it just makes some interesting observations.  If you remember the Seventies, or if you’re just curious and want to check out a one-of-a-kind comic, get ahold of a copy and give it a look…just make sure you don’t take it all too seriously.

El CMLL ya tiene listo el que parece ser el último gran cartel del 2009: “Sin Salida”, donde una vez más vemos un buen duelo México vs Japón. Los contratos ya están firmados, Texano Jr. y Terrible una pareja ruda muy acoplada en los últimos tiempos, los campeones de parejas de occidente se enfrentan al equipo “No Limit” Yujiro y Naito, ex-campeones Jr. de NJPW, que exponen una vez más sus cabelleras en México después de que ya raparon a Toscano y a Black Warrior. Será un duelo rudos vs rudos que por muchos es esperado. ¿México ya le ganara una a los japoneses?

En la lucha semifinal Volador Jr. y La Sombra, los actuales campeones mundiales de parejas, expondrán una vez más los títulos ante los “Hijos del Averno” Mephisto y Ephesto, parece ser una lucha muy atractiva ya veremos si los técnicos logran retener una vez más los títulos que durante el año le sacaron bastante brillo

Las 4 luchas restantes tienen varios atractivos, la presencia de Místico, Strongman, los Guerreros de la Atlántida juntos ¿por ultima vez?, la dinastía Alvarado nieves, y un Macth relámpago entre Mascarita Dorada y Pequeño Damián 666 que se ha visto por varias partes del mundo.

llego el esperado Dark Avengers 11

Después del Resumen que hiciéramos hace algunos dias sobre el comic del Dark Avengers,  ahora les  traemos el resumen de Dark Avengers 11, dibujado magistralmente por nuestro cuate Mike Deodato, vamos a ver que pasó….

Los Dark Avengers se han dirigido a Dinosaur, un pueblo de Colorado, donde la hija de un secretario de estado ha desaparecido, Sentry ha sido inhabilitado muy rápidamente y cuando los Avengers de Osborn llegan al lugar, Osborn sufre un lapsus en donde se encuentra en un lugar bastante tenebroso  y en ese lugar encuentra a Molecule Man sentado en un trono y a su lado Zarathos, Enchantress, Mephisto y el mismísimo  Beyonder, ahí, Norman sorprendido pregunta por su equipo y  como puede ayudar al Molecule Man y a sus amigos, pero estos “amigos” contestan que son los amigos que el mismo Molecule Man creó, los amigos que el merece, con lo que se demuestra que no son los verdaderos seres sobrenaturales del Marvel U, Molecule Man dice que quiere esa parte del país para si mismo, ya que es el lugar donde creció y quiere que lo dejen en paz, también le dice a Osborn que podría matarlo pero no lo hará por que si lo hace vendrán los demás héroes Marvel para encargarse de él, asi que en lugar de matar a Norman y sus Dark Avengers, Molecule Man solo jugará un poco con ellos, acto seguido Norman aparece vestido como Spider-Man en la parte superior de un puente, en donde ve a una Gwen Stacy embarazada a punto de caer al vacio, pero el que cae es Norman, posteriormente Osborn ve como muchos héroes  pero con apariencia demoníaca y lo atacan…..

El siguiente es Sentry a quien después de decir que nunca había probado esa clase de poder  como el de Reynolds, pero que si lo deja libre, lo atacará como Osborn le dijo, así que nuevamente Sentry explota mientras Molecule Man dice “hubiéramos podido ser amigos”…. Venom es fácilmente derrotado cuando se separa el simbiote del cuerpo de Mac Gargan, el simbionte lo ataca y solo queda una masa sin forma… Miss Marvel tampoco corre con mucha suerte, ya que a pesar de lanzar rayos contra el Molecule Man, este los detiene muy fácilmente, asi que queda neutralizada igual de fácil que Venom… Ares está convertido en una especie de estatua, por lo que no da batalla, Molecule Man quiere enviar a alguno de sus prisioneros para advertirle al mundo que no manden a nadie contra él, por lo que la decisión parece ser Hawkeye/Bullseye, que ha sido literalmente convertido en agua y se encuentra en un contenedor de esos de 200 litros… en esas están cuando aparece Victoria Hand, la segunda al mando de HAMMER después de Osborn y  ella en nombre de los USA, se rinde ante Molecule Man.

Dieser Artikel befasst sich mal wieder ein bißchen mit Technik, mit Technik und Ausrüstung. Es ist so eine Art “Aus dem Nähkästchen geplaudert”, wie und mit was meine Natur- und Gartenfotos entstehen. Vor meinem professionellen Hintergrund auch durchaus für den Hobby-Fotografen und Naturfreund als Anregung für den eigenen Freizeitspaß zu verstehen.  Gerade für den Fotofreund, der im eigenen Garten gerne die Singvögel fotografieren würde, denke ich einige nützliche Anregungen zu haben.

Es ist klar, wer sich auf die Jagd nach kleinen Lebewesen macht, der kommt um ein bestimmtes Minimum an Ausrüstung nicht herum. Man sollte da wohlüberlegt vorgehen, denn das Equipment ist nicht gerade billig. Daß es nicht so umfangreich sein muß wie das des Berufsfotografen ist aber keine Frage. Und es läßt sich auch vieles etwas preisgünstiger auch gebraucht erwerben. Doch dazu später mehr.

Mein Equipment

Fotogepäck für den Naturfotografen

Wer nicht nur im eigenen Garten unterwegs ist, sondern auch draußen in der Natur, der braucht auf jeden Fall ein vernünftiges, gut zu transportierendes Fotogepäck. Meines ist der Lowe Pro Phototrekker. Meiner ist bereits 21 Jahre alt, 1988 gekauft. Die heutigen Modelle sehen zwar etwas anders aus, bieten ein zusätzliches Fach für das Notebook, aber die Grundfunktionalitäten sind die gleichen wie bei meinem alten Modell.  Und noch, en passant, was die teure Ausrüstung langfristig doch etwas preiswerter macht: auch alle meine Linsen sind in der gleichen Altersklasse wie mein Fotogepäck. Auch das 2,8/300 mm von Tamron (ein MF-Objektiv wie meine meisten) ist gleichfalls aus dem Jahr 1988. Kauft man Qualität, so hat man lange etwas davon. Das verstehe ich auch unter “Nachhaltigkeit”. Denn verständlicherweise ist gerade der Naturfotograf kein Freund der Wegwerfgesellschaft.

Was man bei dem Foto oben gleich auch noch sieht: ein stabiles Stativ (bei mir ein Gitzo Reporter) gehört auf jeden Fall dazu. Und für draußen stabiles Schuhwerk. Gute Trekking-Boots. Denn andernfalls wird der Streifzug durch das Outdoor Terrain schnell zur Tortur.

Seit 2009 filme ich auch. Gerade in der Vogelwelt gibt das reizvolle Clips. Das bewegte Bild zeigt die Tiere in Aktion. Man sieht auch im Foto oben, da bin ich noch nicht professionell ausgerüstet. Auch ein Profi, der zuvor nie gefilmt hat, muß erst mal testen, ob er mit diesem Medium überhaupt klar kommt. Als ich Ende 2005 von der Fotografie auf Film in die digitale Welt bin und mir die D2H (preisgünstiges Vorführgerät) zugelegt habe, da habe ich dennoch meine F4 behalten (1990 auch als Vorführgerät gekauft). Um im Zweifelsfall auch weiterhin meine Bilddateien per Filmscanner vom Negativ oder Dia erstellen zu können. Denn daß ein Profi automatisch mit einer neuen Technik klarkommt, das ist keineswegs selbstverständlich.

Eine Empfehlung aber auf jeden Fall an jeden, der auch mit der Handycam auf  Naturpirsch gehen will: auf ein gutes optisches Zoom achten! Mit möglichst großem Brennweitenbereich. Meine Sony hat ein Carl Zeiss Objektiv mit 60-fachem optischen Zom.

Und dann sind wir hier an dem Punkt, wo’s oft in die Hose geht: Nie ohne Stativ! Nicht unbedingt zwingendermaßen vom Dreibein. Auf jeden Fall aber mit einem Einbein oder – noch besser – einem Schulterstativ.

Beobachtungen am selbst gebauten Vogelbad

Der folgende Film zeigt in seiner ersten Sequenz, wie ich von der Terrassentür aus auf Film- und Fotojagd am selbstgebauten Vogelbad gehen kann. Das ist ca. 5 Meter entfernt und mein Standort liegt außerhalb des Fluchtbereichs der Tiere.

Und hier der Clip zum Bau des Vogelbades. Ich habe das ganz speziell für diesen Zweck angelegt. Also in Reichweite meiner Objektive, für Foto und Film. Man muß natürlich dafür sorgen, daß es von den Tieren angenommen wird. Und dazu gehört auch, ihnen einen Ausguck anzubieten, auf dem sie erstmal zwischenlanden und nach eventuellen Beutegreifern Ausschau halten können. Es sollte darüberhinaus möglichst frei im Rasen stehen, so daß sich etwa eine Katze nicht unbemerkt anpirschen kann.

Ich bin Profi und insofern mache ich meine Naturfotos nicht (nicht nur) zu meinem persönlichen Spaß und um mich und andere mit meinen Bildern zu erfreuen. In erster Linie will ich mit meinen Fotos Geld verdienen. Auch das geht mit Vogelbad-Shots. Gerade in diesem Jahr hatten wir das Thema des mysteriösen Finkensterbens. Besonders betroffen waren die Grünfinken. Des Rätsels Lösung waren die Vogelbäder. Hier infizierten sich die Singvögel mit den tödlichen Keimen (aber nur dann, wenn diese Bäder nicht regelmäßig gereinigt und mit frischem Wasser versehen wurden!). Und so gelangte einer unserer Grünfinken auch als Nachrichtenbild in die Presse.

Die Ursache des geheimnisvollen Finkensterbens ist geklärt

In dem Zusammenhang der obligatorische Hinweis in eigener Sache: Unsere Grünfinken erfreuen sich alle bester Gesundheit! Denn wir reinigen regelmäßig das Vogelbad und füllen es mit frischem Wasser auf.

Die Alternative zum lichtstarken Tele

Daß es nicht unbedingt ein lichtstarkes Tele mit Anfangsöffnung 2,8 sein muß, zeigt das folgende Bildpaar. Ich habe auch selbst noch ein uraltes 400-er Novoflex im Einsatz (siehe linkes Bild). Das hat “nur” die Lichtstärke 5,6, tut aber durchaus seine Dienste.

Und eine solche Optik ist heutzutage zu einem geradezu Spottpreis zu erwerben. Okay, wenn man sie auf dem Gebrauchtmarkt überhaupt noch findet. Denn der Kenner wird eine solche Linse wahrscheinlich nicht verkaufen. Doch es lohnt allemal, sich da auf die Suche zu begeben.

Rather than a square-jawed man in his vague mid-30’s as he had seen many times, Lee’s central character would be nebbish-like weirdo who was constantly spouting his complaints… likely a behavior that Lee himself was guilty of. This resulted in some of the most sophisticated dialog and plotting that Lee had ever achieved, with Parker frustrated not just by supervillains but by always being short of cash, having no luck with women and constantly paranoid about the health of his ailing Aunt who was the last connection to a family that he had.

Brilliant artist Steve Ditko drew the scrawny bookworm Peter Parker as an outcast in a high school populated with jocks like ‘Flash’ Thompson and beautiful blonde bombshells like Liz Allen. Parker was clearly more intelligent than his peers and his sudden gift of superhuman strength and agility proved more of a problem than anything else due to his social awkwardness. Any time Flash frustrated him, Parker was reminded of his ability to crush that thug with one hand… but he couldn’t. Parker strove to live up to the abilities that had been granted to him rather than abuse them as many of us probably would. This combination of character was an almost innocent fusion of ideas regarding one’s social responsibility that Ditko would explore later in the Question and Mr. A. Parker was like us, conflicted by personal problems yet he struggled to be an almost perfect human being in his moral behavior, using his powers to help anyone in trouble and never striking out in violence if he could help it.

As a result… Peter Parker the Amazing Spider-Man was miserable.

After decades of stories, Marvel Comics decided that they needed a massive rethink of their star character as he had strayed too far from where Editor-In-Chief Joe Quesada felt he should be. Once an outcast, Parker was not only married, but his wife was a super-model. As a superhero Spider-Man had classically been a dud with the rest of the superhuman community as well, but in recent years he had become a member of the Avengers and associate of Tony Stark (Iron Man).

Things needed to change. The lengths to which Marvel went to achieve that change proved to be… diabolical.

Year One – Issues 546-582

Leading into the Brand New Day story line was JM Straczynski’s much attacked and seldom lauded ‘One Last Day’ story in which Peter Parker found himself a hunted vigilante from the law while his aunt who had taken a bullet for him lay dying in the hospital. The only solution lay in a deal with Mephisto to make it all go away at the price of his marriage to Mary Jane Watson. Thew ‘undoing’ of the marriage was the first in EIC Joe Quesdada’s master plan to put Spider-Man back on track and that is unfortunate. I’m not a huge supported of the Parker-Watson marriage, but it was at least a progression in the character’s story much in the same way as his acceptance into the Avengers and working with Stark furthered the character’s development from awkward youth to adulthood. Removing some-most of these developmental steps comes across as heavy handed and sloppy. Despite the abilities of the creators, One Last Day remains a very clumsy step toward greatness.

I say ‘greatness’ because the proceeding Brand New Day storyline is absolute genius. Cancelling the other two Spider-Man series and employing several writers to act as a ‘braintrust’ of Amazing Spider-Man is a masterstroke as it allows several plot threads to play out in each issue while the flagship title became what it was always meant to be… the best Spider-Man comic ever. Stan Lee and Steve Ditko should be flattered that it took a deal with ‘the devil’ and an army of creators to accomplish what they had done themselves back in 1964. In any case, a ‘return to basics’ approach may seem like massive leap backwards it was also exactly what was needed to make Spider-Man a success again. The remaining Amazing Spider-Man was announced as a three times a month affair with rotating creative teams. Fans scowled that it was doomed for failure but sales skyrocketed.

In Brand New Day, Peter Parker is single, broke and swinging through New York City by way of his web shooters containing the very limited web fluid. In the opening story, Daily Bugle editor J Jonah Jameson has a heart attack and the paper is sold to a new owner by JJ’s ex-wife to Dexter Bennett (DB) who transforms the paper into a sensationalist rag. Additionally, Parker must deal with the threat of Mister Negative while being hunted by the police for questioning in the ‘Spider tracer killings’ case in which bodies turned up with a rather incriminating spidey tracer attached to their corpses. Parker’s deal with Mephisto added several variables to the rather tired Spider-Man mythology, included the revival of Harry Osborn. Whereas Harry was a convoluted and complicated character in the past, in the Brand New Day world he is just Parker’s old roommate who has struggled to succeed in his life without his father Norman Osborn’s help.

The first of a series of new villains, Mister Negative is a signpost of what was to come. The over-reliance on staid and reliable super villains had softened both Spider-Man and the villains as well. While the Hobgoblin or Rhino were once exciting they had become boring. The brain trust introduced several new villains to plague Peter Parker including Menace, the glamor-hungry Internet sensation Screwball and the constantly-mutating meth-addicted Freak. While Menace is admittedly a Green Goblin knock-off, the identity of the villain proved to be an enticing idea and was strung along into the second year of the title’s new life cycle. The idea to introduce new villains was a conscious one and it held true throughout the first year of the Brand New Day experiment, in addition to the gimmick of rotating creative teams.

Teaming up with Wolverine was not as unique as it once was, so artist Chris Bachalo added a certain flair to the story, making it stand out. The cover design and story lines proved to be just unique and uncluttered by continuity to attract new readers. This still strikes me as the basic approach of Ultimate Spider-Man, to reduce the character to his core concept and remove the need to collect every issue in order to understand the latest adventure. However, in the case of Brand New Day, it worked marvelously. Whereas the previous iteration of Spider-Man had become a near-mythical creature with a past that become more convoluted with each issue, this new version was much simpler.

If I had to choose one story that stood out in the first year of the Brand New Day concept, it would have to be the Paper Doll story. Parker takes up work as a photographer for a tabloid obtaining ‘impossible’ pictures of celebs thanks to his superhuman abilities. This leads him into a confrontation with the celebrity-obsessed villain Paper Doll. The story also included the first appearance of Mary Jane post ‘One Last Day’ which had fans clamoring. The reason why readers were in a flurry was that prior to Mephisto un-doing the marriage that MJ and Peter had, she whispered something in his ear (which is still a mystery). This left readers unclear on whether MJ retained the knowledge that Peter had lost of the previous life together. Given her behavior in this story, Mary Jane remember everything, making her a very noble and brave person… and further complicating Parker’s life.

The introduction of Kraven the Hunter’s daughter was an inspired idea as it allowed the creators to allude to a classic villain while staying clear of reviving said villain. In the adventure, Kraven’s daughter hunts Spider-Man to his apartment as a hunter stalks its prey only to mistakenly identify Parker’s roommate, Vin Gonzales as her foe. Dressing Vin up in the Spider-Man uniform she discovered in the apartment, she abducts him to the sewers for a trail by combat. Without a costume of his own, Spidey calls in a favor to fellow vigilante Matt Murdock the Daredevil and enters the fray under an assumed identity of the Man Without Fear. The story itself was quite fun and continued to develop the ‘Spider-tracer killer’ plot.

Nevertheless, in time the tried and true super villains of the past resurfaced. However, the story line was so thrilling that the inclusion of classic villains is excusable. After 23 issues of mainly new villains, the appearance of Venom on the cover of a Spider-Man comic seemed novel. Norman Osborn had given Tony Stark ample room to round up the rogue vigilante Spider-Man who brazenly avoided the Superhuman Registration Act. When Stark proved incapable of bringing the criminal to justice, the Thunderbolts were mobilized.

Composed of reformed super villains operating under the threat of death via nanite-induced death, the Thunderbolts were composed of Moonstone, Radioactive Man, the Sword Master, Songbird, Venom and Bullseye. The combined might of the Thunderbolts was further complicated by the resurgence of Eddie Brock as ‘Anti-Venom’ who became a walking antibody to the human race, burning out impurities wherever they may be. Based on preliminary artwork, the battle between the two Venoms appeared to many as groan-inducing and reminiscent of the over-use of the villain in the 1990’s, but the pay off was surprisingly excellent. The ‘New Ways to Die’ story appeared at first to be a gimmick, but proved to be a major success in attracting any readers doubtful of the direction Spider-Man had taken under the new regime.

Following ‘New Ways to Die’ was a series of short stories re-introducing Hammerhead and the Molten Man to the rogue’s gallery. There also appeared a mid-comic story teaming up Spider-Man with the Punisher which may have been yawn-inducing once upon a time but given the new state of the series was positively exciting. After a single issue story focusing on Flash Thompson serving in the military(which still feels rather odd), guest writer Mark Waid introduced the character that had thrown the largest monkey wrench ever into the Spider-Man series, J. Jonah Jameson’s dad.

The rotating creative team was tasked with continuing several plot threads while developing their own adventures, something that had become a dirty word (continuity) in recent years but under the Brand New Day banner made the Spider-Man series feel more alive than it had in decades. The tone of the series felt remarkably sharp and slick, absolutely aware of the attention that Marvel’s most popular character was attracting due to numerous multimedia tie-ins and a legacy of popularity in print.

In short, the first year of the Brand New Day experiment was a major (and risky) success. The introduction of new super villains, a new status quot and the re-introduction of classic rogues made reading Spider-Man week to week a fun experience. While it is a shame that a magical reset button gimmick was seen as unavoidable to make it happen, Brand New Day made Spider-Man feel new for the first time since Lee and Ditko first collaborated. The perpetuation of this hard-earned winning streak was to prove the hardest victory… but that is for another time.

Jon “Strongman” Andersen regresó a la capital, aliándose a Místico y Héctor Garza para enfrentar a Atlantis, Negro Casas y el rival con quien sí se podía poner a la altura de Andersen: Último Guerrero.

No obstante, parecía que nunca fueron rivales, pues no se vio ese odio que normalmente es notorio cuando hay un pique. Atlantis y Guerrero ya le están tomando la medida a Strongman, pues al ver que los ataques al pecho y piernas no funcionaron, optaron por comenzarlo a patear en la cabeza para debilitarlo y ganar la primera caída con un doble súplex. Para la segunda, las cosas estuvieron candentes cuando salió la espectacularidad de los técnicos, pues los Guerreros de la Atlántida tenían listo a Andersen para recibir su catapulta Guerrera, pero en eso, desde arriba del escenario, Místico planchó a Atlantis para así tomar el control. Posteriormente, Andersen impulsó a Místico para que sacara en patadas al Guerrero, y Místico volara hacia fuera del cuadrilátero sobre Guerrero. Arriba, Andersen aplica un tacle a Casas para así emparejar la situación. La tercera caída fue rápida: nuevamente Místico se lució con su agilidad. Rápidamente volvió a salir en plancha sobre Guerrero; Garza ejecutó un pescado sobre Atlantis. Casas, por su parte, intentó sorprender a Strongman con una silla voladora, pero éste lo cachó y lo azotó brutalmente sobre el poste. Ya recuperados Guerrero y Místico, éste logró aplicar la mística para así obtener la victoria.

La Ola Amarilla sigue en plan arrollador, pues sigue incrementando el odio entre Terrible y Texano Jr., pues aún no terminaba la presentación y los japoneses ya tenían encima a los mexicanos. En la primera caída se coordinaron para aplicar castigos combinados que algunos aficionados reconocían con aplausos. Para la segunda, los Hijos del Averno no encontraban la manera de contrarrestar el ataque, pero en un descuido, Texano se llevó en enredadera a Naito, quien ya eliminado jaló los pies de Texano. Terrible protestó y el réferi se distrajo. Naito, entonces, se subió tranquilamente a faulear a Terrible para que Yujiro cubriera, ganando en dos al hilo.

Terrible y Texano retaron a los japoneses a una lucha por las cabelleras. Interesante rivalidad, pues Terrible y Texano han demostrado ser una pareja bien coordinada y seguramente puede resultar un buen encuentro.
